Annual Fund While one might expect tuition would cover the full cost of a PCDS education, it does not. The Annual Fund makes up the difference and touches every aspect of students’ experiences every day. Each fall, we ask every family to give to PCDS in support of the academic programs and curriculum enhancements that are the hallmark of our independent school experience.

Nearly 1 in 4 students at PCDS receives a need-based financial aid scholarship and is supported for his or her entire PCDS career.

HOW IT WORKS There are two Arizona Private School Tax Credit Programs that help fund PCDS financial scholarships.

Individual Program: • Redirect a portion of personal Arizona tax liability to a Student Tuition Organization (AISSF) in support of the PCDS financial aid program.

• Participants, in turn, receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit against their Arizona income taxes.

• There is a maximum amount for 2018: $2,213 (married filer) and $1,107 (single filer).

Corporate Program: • Any Arizona “C” or “S” corporation can redirect their corporate tax obligation to a private school of their choice (PCDS) to help fund need-based scholarships.

• Corporations, in turn, receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit against their AZ income taxes.

• There is no maximum contribution amount – just a minimum of $5,000 per company.

PCDS was founded with the mission of creating an educational beacon in the desert.

More than a half-century later, that vision is thriving, thanks in large part to the Louis family.

In 1969, Dr. Herbert J. “Tim” Louis seeded the Phoenix Country Day School endowment, just a few short years after the school was established.

The Louis family has helped shape PCDS history since the School’s inception, and they now continue to shape its future by establishing the Louis Family Society for Planned Giving.

Now in our 56th year, the time is right for PCDS to establish a formal Planned Giving program.

The Society recognizes members of the extended PCDS community who have included the School in their estate plans in one way or another ­­— ranging from a bequest intention to a trust arrangement.

Talley Society On April 19, 2018, PCDS launched a group recognizing donors throughout School history whose cumulative giving to PCDS equals $25,000 and above. The new society of donors has been named the Honorable Mae Sue Talley Society, in honor of the visionary leader who spearheaded the creation of PCDS as the Valley’s premiere independent school in 1961. Mrs. Talley, who passed away in 2017, was a prominent Phoenix philanthropist and Arizona leader who, along with her husband Franz, served among the School’s original founders.

ENDOWMENTS IN ACTION: Pham Le Scholarship Endowment The Pham Le Scholarship Endowment was created to promote diversity at PCDS. A scholarship will be awarded each academic year to an US student who is of Asian Pacific ethnicity.

The first Pham Le Scholarship recipient was awarded in the 2017-18 school year. The recipient states, “Not only am I extremely happy that this scholarship helps my family moneywise, I am also glad to know there is a scholarship for Asians, like myself. I hope more great opportunities are given to all different students, just as this scholarship has done for me. No words can describe how grateful my family and I are.”

PLANNED GIVING By making a planned gift, donors can leave a legacy, whether through a tax-advantaged life income gift or through a bequest.

IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER Individuals who are 70.5 and older are able to make a tax-free gift (up to $100,000) from their individual retirement account (IRA) directly to PCDS without subject to income taxes on the distribution. Many PCDS grandparents and former parents consider this option.
