We give to PC because of their unwavering commitment to Christian education and loving the community around them. PC provides an enriching environment for its students to grow academically, spiritually, and socially. We desire to support its growth & continued excellence now and in the future. CHIP & KAY ALLISON ’02 “WhyGive”We

Consider for a moment so many students through so many eras and not one of them at Phoenix Christian by chance. Rather, each one finds their way to PC as God’s sovereign and perfect plan unfolds in his or her life. All of this for God’s glory, all for the good of His Kingdom on earth and for eternity. We are eternally grateful to the Lord, and we trust PhoenixHim.Christian

• Encounter Jesus Christ daily.

• Grow in relationship with Jesus Christ.

• Share the good news of Jesus Christ.

• Excel through the abundance of opportunities to launch a ChristCentered life. The Phoenix Christian we celebrate today is being renewed and reinvented by the leading of the Holy Spirit. Each and every day we are increasingly aware of the unique gift the Lord has given Phoenix Christian. PC today, more than ever before, is a broad reflection of God’s image and of His handiwork. None of us, even with our best efforts, could have imagined or orchestrated all that God is doing right now in this very season of ministry in, through, and around Phoenix Christian. We are mindful that God is moving and will follow Him as He leads us.

4 | Phoenix Christian Preparatory Summer 2022

Preparatory School began its ministry of Christian education in 1949 as a covenant Christian school as enrolled families were required to submit their Christian testimony and submit proof of church affiliation. In 2009, Phoenix Christian made the decision to embrace a missional model which removed previous requirements. This change speaks directly to the heart of our school. Here at Phoenix Christian, we welcome students from all backgrounds to study and grow under the loving and faithful direction of our devoted staff of believers.

God has impacted the lives of many students and their families using the ministry of Phoenix Christian. Thousands of young people have made memories and forged relationships as PC Cougars. Many of these friendships continue to grow and flourish decades after their brief time as students transition to a lifetime as Phoenix Christian Alumni.

Phoenix Christian’s Missional Focus is for each student to:

• Embody a community in which students will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character, the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

With prayer, Jeff Blake, MaSLF, MaED Superintendent As we look back, we are grateful.

As we look forward, we are committed.

We know that our Creator desires and pursues relationship with His creation. The best that we can offer in response is to obey His call and pray earnestly that He will find us available and faithful to walk with Him as He leads the Jesusway.

As we continue to celebrate all that God has done, is doing, and will do through Phoenix Christian many who may have been around for a while can only marvel and worship in awe at the ways in which the Lord continues to express His incredible handiwork on this living canvas we recognize as PC’s campus, classrooms, and athletic venues.

is the One who put PC on this new path we now call missional. He is the One Who ordered our steps to transition from a previously closed enrollment to an honest enrollment. As we continue to move forward in step with God’s new missional design for PC, every new student relationship is built on a foundation of an honest and open understanding that Phoenix Christian is unashamed of the gospel and committed to teaching, coaching, and leading from the perspective of a Biblical worldview. We know that eternity is at stake and that time is of the essence. That means every student, every family, and every kid that God calls to PC as a part of His mission for us, regardless of where they may be on their personal faith journey, is welcomed, loved, and encouraged as a treasured gift from the Lord. Those who God draws to Phoenix Christian know that Jesus is our leader.

We are fiercely committed to presenting the truth of God’s word consistently and with love. We are committed and by God’s grace we will not miss out on joining Him in the mission to which we have been called. We will continue to introduce young people coming from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives to the person of Jesus Christ. We will equip and nurture those in our care to live out their worship of Jesus in a variety of ways that are useful to Him for the sake of His Kingdom both here and for

Adan, with a STEM concentration, completed his project by hosting a baseball clinic for children. He researched the importance of childhood physical activity and learning a new sport. He also focused on the valuable lessons learned from being on a team like responsibility, self-confidence, and leadership. Adan hosted a community baseball clinic, inviting both Phoenix Christian elementary students as well as the larger central Phoenix community. Adan put on an incredible camp with 31 children in attendance.

Adan plans to attend Grand Canyon University and study criminal justice. He will also transfer over 30 college credits through Phoenix Christian’s dual enrollment Weprogram.areproud of this young man and anticipate that God will use Adan in a mighty way! ALVARADO

SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECTS ADAN

Malia plans to attend NAU and pursue a degree in environmental science. She will also transfer 16 dual enrollment credits!

Malia concentrated in STEM during her career at Phoenix Christian. Malia decided on a unique and challenging project, creating an art exhibit displaying the beauty of the human body. Her experience in Honors Anatomy inspired her as she began to contemplate a topic. Malia is also a gifted artist but had spent little time developing that interest. So, an idea was born: The Art of the Human Body Exhibition. Malia hoped to create unique pieces that depicted “cool” yet overlooked elements of the human body. Her exhibit included seven different pieces using acrylic paint, canvas, clay, and other mediums to showcase “how wonderfully made we are.” The exhibit onlookers were captivated by one of her abstract pieces depicting two people. The rest was left up to viewer interpretation!

Combined, these educators represent 128 years of experience and wisdom, thousands of lives impacted, and three shining examples of living curriculum.

12 | Phoenix Christian Preparatory | Summer 2022

MRS. JAIME ROSS has served as a Christ-centered educator for 40 years, including 20 of those years serving on the Phoenix Christian faculty. Each of us will always remember our Kindergarten teacher. Her unwavering care for the personal growth and wellbeing of each student is a beautiful embodiment as if Jesus were living her life.

Three beautiful educators retired this year from Phoenix Christian.

MRS. RUTH ZAPPE has served as a Christ-centered educator for 45 years, serving three Christian Schools. God brought the right person at the right time to our Elementary School. Her unwavering determination to trust in our Lord, leaning not into her own understanding, has inspired her guidance of three Christian schools and is a beautiful embodiment as if Jesus were living her life.

MRS. JAN WOLFE has served as a Christ-centered educator for 43 years-with all those years with Phoenix Christian. Her unwavering celebration of beauty, Godbreathed creativity, loving presence to students, and steading presence (through many challenging seasons) to new teachers and administrators is a beautiful embodiment as if Jesus were living her life.

ATHLETIC

WINTER & ACHIEVEMENTSSPRING

With a small roster and a difficult sport like Wrestling, many kids choose the easy road. These athletes put in the work this year! Coming out of COVID, it was great to see our wrestlers get multiple matches at each meet. The season even produced the 5th place wrestler in the state in his weight class—Pablo Hernandez, pictured.

The Varsity Soccer team used some of last year’s momentum to start off well. They competed in every game and tripled last year’s win total, but more importantly, they found a way to compete against the top teams in the state! With a host of young talent moving up, our soccer program could be poised for great things!

15

THIS HAS BEEN AN AMAZING YEAR FOR OUR ATHLETIC PROGRAM, WHERE MANY TEAMS ADVANCED. We were blessed to have many teams earn spots in the AIA playoffs as well as many individuals that earned berths in the AIA State Championships. It was truly an incredible year! Our WINTER SEASON included men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, and co-ed soccer.

With a new coach, 2010 alumnus Brandi (Adams) Watkins, growing culture, and many additional players, the Women’s Varsity Basketball program competed well this season, making a play-in game and setting themselves up for future success.

In a season that started shakily, Men’s Basketball couldn’t have had a better ending. This group learned together, fought together, and grew up together. They got hot at the perfect time and advanced to the Final Four. With most of the team returning, the future looks bright for this group, and we are so excited to see what next year brings. This dream team was even invited to join the much-anticipated Fiesta Bowl Section 7 tournament this summer.

Xavier Gutierrez throws a solid strike!

Coaches Brigowatz and Gerken set about to enlist PC Golf talent, including a few homeschool athletes. Once the team began, they improved every week and eventually had 3 qualifiers out of 5 golfers advance to the State Tournament. Freshmen JJ Brigowatz even placed 6th in the State!

6th Place JJ Brigowatz pictured with Coach Gerken & Coach Brigowatz at the State match.

We moved into spring sports with great excitement! The novice Varsity Baseball team continued to improve as the season went on and competed in the 2A playoffs, nearly knocking off the #2 seed in the playoffs. With so many young players and incredible growth, this program has a bright future.

The Varsity Softball season was a growth year in many ways including adding a whole new coaching staff led by Coach Flisyn. Yet the girls improved rapidly, winning the region, and advancing to the sweet sixteen of the 2A playoffs. With a record of 11-6, these girls posted the first winning season for PC in three years and the first region championship since 1997!

Grace Fisher sets for a bunt. Track & Field has a long and successful history at Phoenix Christian. This season, we had a host of athletes qualify for state, many breaking personal records and Jerahmia Smith breaking the school record, winning the state championship in the process. With most athletes returning, the state of Arizona better watch out for Cougar Track!

17

In its short time of existence, Men’s Volleyball has grown quickly. Our boys have learned how to compete with bigger, more experienced teams. The team responded well, learning the game and competing at a high level.

18 Phoenix Christian Preparatory | Summer 2022

MS Boys Basketball, coached by Kole Ebert ’18, finished the season as the CCSL champions and went undefeated on the year. The boys’ blend of athleticism and team speed made it difficult for opponents to advance the ball under our suffocating defense. Our MS Girls Basketball team advanced to the CCSL Championship but finished as the Runner-Up for 21-22. The girls also played great team defense and smothered opponents while using great defense to transition into easy offense.

Some chose to work in groups which taught them how to work together as a team and create a project they could all be proud of. Others chose to work alone which taught them there are situations in which they are solely responsible for the outcome. Both groups learned to take a large project and break it down into smaller components to achieve the end goal.

EXCELS!

During the National Day of Prayer, most of our 5th graders stepped up to pray multiple times with boldness and confidence for our nation! It was a blessing to see God use this generation to rise up and pray! We are so proud of our 5th graders. God has amazing plans for them!

One of the many things we love about our students is how much they have grown spiritually this year! I have seen them dig into God’s Word with excitement to read it and ask amazing deep questions because they wanted to know God more! Our students love to pray!

The biggest accomplishment for 5th grade this year was their work on their science fair projects. Both classes dedicated themselves and really produced some exceptional work.

- Mr. Moran & Mrs. Fritch ’95 Grade Teachers

After two years of interrupted classes, remote and hybrid learning, students, thankfully, returned to the classroom for a full academic year. What a year it was for Phoenix Christian Middle School. The year was filled with extraordinary achievements. We celebrated four athletic championships, a successful middle school science fair, remarkable growth in our test scores, and a thriving Fine Arts and STEM program. Many of our middle school students participated in the Lion King musical this last spring—what an incredible experience! As we anticipate this next year, we look forward to full classrooms on the second floor with over 115 students. They will have opportunities to explore their many gifts and talents through our elective opportunities including new courses like Home Management, Book Club, Athletic Training, and Graphic Design. Our MESA program kicks back off this year with plans for competing in two major competitions. With an all-star teaching team, I am confident that God will do amazing things in Middle School! - Mark Abeyta, MS Principal

Roving Volunteers in Christ’s Service (RVICS) & Sowers serve Phoenix Christian in countless ways. We had a record-breaking year for RVICS and SOWERS! From December to April, we had over 17 couples on campus. These amazing servants were outstanding. Some big projects they accomplished included painting all the exterior doors, several classrooms, and walls around campus, organizing rooms and cleaning most of the campus’ windows, doors, and closets.

The RVICS and SOWERS also helped with our spectacular “Under the Big Top” Gala and Auction. They constructed many of the props that we utilized to transform our courtyard into an elegant circus and even attended the special night. We are so excited for their arrival this upcoming year! I hope that these amazing couples realize how they have impacted our school community in such a tremendous way. We love our volunteers!

Jan Wolfe, who retired this year after 43 years of teaching the arts at Phoenix Christian, left a beautiful legacy. Her love for art inspired countless students, many of whom, continued a career in art, art education, or just a really great hobby. Her classroom became an oasis for many students; a time to reflect on beauty, collaborate with fellow artists, and be moved to reflect their Creator. One student developed her remarkable artistic ability under the tutelage of Jan Wolfe. Inspired to complete her art education degree, she became a full-time art teacher at another local Christian school. When word spread about Mrs. Wolfe retiring, she felt moved to reach out and inquire about the opening. We are thrilled to welcome Rebecca (Risner) Feight ’02 to Phoenix Christian as our new MS and HS art teacher! Becca and so many others’ career paths in the arts were directly influenced by our incredible fine arts program at Phoenix Christian. Today, students have the opportunity to choose a concentration area in either Fine Arts, Humanities, Spiritual and Leadership Formation, or STEM. This directly enhances the opportunity for Fine Arts students to advance in their skill set and better prepare for a career in the arts. Two of our seniors even completed their Capstone Projects in the Arts by hosting an art exhibit.

- Renee Woodward ’78 Congrats to Mrs. Wolfe, fka Miss O!! - Angel Leigh Wonderful memories of art class with Mrs. Wolfe. I still talk about the things I learned, and I continue to have a lifelong love of art. (I was Sherri Wauchope back then.) Congratulations on your retirement! - Sherri Lynn Collier ’82 I am from the graduating class of 1986. Mrs. Wolfe was an integral part of my high school years. High school was difficult for me due to family issues but she created a safe place where I could express my frustration, anger, and fear without judgment. She inspired me to go on and get my art education degree and in doing so inspired five more art teachers and I’m sure many more. She allowed me to paint faces on my flower still life piece, even though it killed her realistic sensibilities. Mrs. Wolfe, thank you for just being there, guiding quietly, and for passing on a lifelong love of art, its creation, and appreciation. - Kim (Gerlach) Camping ’86 During my initial school tour, I wanted to visit the art room even though I had never taken art class. Mrs. Wolfe encouraged me with a few words to

The Art & Legacy of Mrs. Wolfe

34 | Phoenix Christian Preparatory | Summer 2022

Mrs. Wolfe’s legacy certainly continues to make an impact. We wanted to include some of our alumni Facebook posts upon hearing about Jan’s retirement and include several recent works of art by some of Mrs. Wolfe’s former students. Mrs. Wolfe was my art teacher all four years of high school. I think I made up an art class just to be in her class my senior year. Not only did she teach me art, but she also taught me great life lessons. She was the most patient and kind woman. Her aura was always so calming. I was terrible at art, but she always gave me a passing grade for trying. High school wouldn’t have been the same without her. I’m immensely grateful for having her in my life those four years. - Amanda Van Hofwegen ’12 Wow! Mrs. Wolfe has been such an amazing part of PC for so many years. I was so blessed to have her as a teacher for a few years! And to grow up friends with Jessica and getting to know Mrs. Wolfe outside of school. She was such a great teacher and is an amazing woman. - Adriann Rivas ’03 Mrs. Wolfe was such an inspiration throughout my high school years and I will never forget how amazing she was as an art teacher! She is the reason I continued to pursue a degree in the arts! I’m glad Mrs. and Mr. Wolfe were my high school teachers - Ashley Gonzales ’15 Mrs. Wolfe has inspired generations of artists! To this day I use a lot of the lessons she taught us when I’m painting and drawing and teaching my kids. I still remember all the amazing fun times I had in all my art classes! You are loved and you will be greatly missed.

- Katherine Schilling ’03 I was there when Miss O began. It would be an honor to be there at the beginning of Mrs W’s new adventure!

35 develop my creative talents. So, during the 2014-2015 year at PC, I took her suggestion and decided to take Art I. Honestly, it was a very challenging class for me, but it was very rewarding, too. There is no other feeling like learning a new skill and improving oneself! From this experience, I was motivated to take art classes for all 4 years of my high school career. Mrs. Wolfe introduced me to oil paints, watercolors, acrylic paints, graphite pencils, charcoal, clay, and beadwork. Even more, she pushed me to broaden my horizons and try other art forms, in which I chose to experiment with string art and ballpoint pen art during Art III and Art IV. I had the honor of representing PC twice at the Shemer High School Student Art Exhibition, and one of those times was with my ballpoint pen drawing. It made me so happy to accomplish this. I had come so far from when I was unsure of myself at the start of high school. The effect of Mrs. Wolfe inspiring me changed my life for the better. I will keep in mind the important life lessons and love that she shared with me forever!

Congratulations on 43 years at Phoenix Christian and all the impact you have had on your students. Your art classes were instrumental to my interest in art and my practice of artistic hobbies.

My name is Mitchell Schilling, and I was a student at Phoenix Christian who graduated with the class of 2018. In my time at PC, I made lifelong friendships and invested in my academic future, and I feel that it prepared me to work hard and chase after my goals with intentionality. Although classes like Calculus and Physics prepared me for a future technical degree, the things that really influenced me were my Bible classes and involvement in athletics. Old and New Testament provided a broad understanding of scripture, and classes like Practical Christian Living and Apologetics truly helped to establish my faith and caused me to think critically about what I believed and the life I intended to live. I also played football and basketball all four years, the fellowships formed and the life lessons I learned taught me to Mitchell Schilling NEW WITH YOU?

37 work hard and lift up those around me and engrained a brand of character that has helped me to succeed in life after high

In my time away from PC these last four years I also got married! In my freshman year of college, I highareacquaintedwaswithgirlIhadmetinschool, andby my senior year she and I were married. All throughout high school I prayed that God would provide me with a loving wife and a fruitful marriage, and I get to live that dream today. My wife Melissa and I intend to settle down and start a family in Prescott, Arizona, near our families, and are excited for the future.

My advice to those of you at Phoenix Christian is to think about what it is you want out of life and make intentional steps to take you there. Life is full of distractions and conflicting voices as to what you should do and who you should be, but I would also encourage you to be the person God made you to be, knowing that a life filled of relationship with Him and serving Him is the only thing that could ever satisfy. I would...encourage you to be the person God made you to be.

fromSinceschool.graduatingPC,Ihavegone on to earn my degree in mechanical engineering from EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University and am now employed full time as an engineer for the firearms manufacturer Sturm, Ruger & Co. in Prescott, Arizona. Embry-Riddle is a great school, and mechanical engineering is a difficult study; needless to say, that it was a difficult four years, but it was also incredibly rewarding. Currently, I am an engineer at Ruger over the department in our facility responsible for the production of gun barrels and get to do many cool things like program robots, buy and implement expensive equipment we need, and implement my own designs into the manufacturing process. In the near future I plan on becoming a design engineer who develops new products and improves existing products and would one day like to start my own business as both my dad and grandpa have done.

Continual employee training on school emergency procedures including lockdown drills, protocol systems, awareness, preparedness strategies including a renewed commitment to ensure all classroom doors remain locked.

• Diligent care of our students by ensuring teachers, coaches, administration, and support staff are aware and responsive to individual student needs.

The following are new measures now in motion:

• Formation of a new Campus Security Task Force, which includes ongoing collaboration with Phoenix Police Department and other leaders with security expertise.

Our 2022/2023 Budget did not include the hiring of professional security personnel which will annually amount to approximately $200 per student. Please consider a gift to help us protect our children, a sacred responsibility, which requires our partnership.

• Installation of Phase 1 of wrought iron fencing around the perimeter of our schools.

• Hiring of armed security services to begin August 2022.

The following are past measures we have taken and will continue to refine:

• Updating our security cameras.

• Limited entry—check in/screening for guests on all campus entry points.
