A Year of Strengthening and Renewal It is a tremendous honor to serve as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Phoenix Christian. For the past two years, I have had the privilege of serving on this Board, but my connection to this school goes much deeper. I am a proud alumnus of Phoenix Christian, and today all three of my children walk the same halls I once did. My family and I are personally invested in the mission of this school—not only because of what it means to us, but because of the eternal impact it has on every student who comes through its doors. As we step into the 2025– 2026 school year, I write to you with gratitude and anticipation. I also want to pause here to thank Steve Woods for his faithful leadership as Chairman of the Board over the past few years; his steady guidance has been an incredible blessing to this school and its bright future. Phoenix Christian has always been more than just a school. It is a community of families, educators, students, and supporters united by a shared mission: to provide Christ-centered education that equips students to live with purpose, integrity, and hope. This past year has been one of strengthening and renewal. We have seen God’s provision in tangible ways—through growing enrollment, faithful teachers who pour into the lives of students, and families who continue to entrust us with their children’s education. We have also seen His provision in the generosity of donors, alumni, and friends who believe in what Phoenix Christian stands for. All of these blessings remind us that the mission of the school is not carried alone by the Board or administration, but through a community walking together in faith. One of the Board’s primary responsibilities is to ensure Phoenix Christian stands on a strong foundation—spiritually, academically, and

financially. By God’s grace, we are healthier in every one of these areas today than we were just a few years ago. Our financial footing is stronger, giving us confidence for the future. Our enrollment continues to grow, reminding us that families see Phoenix Christian as a place of excellence and spiritual formation. Most importantly, our mission remains unchanged: to shine the light of Christ into the lives of students so that they may carry that light into the world. Looking ahead, we are committed to deepening the culture that makes Phoenix Christian unique. Culture is not just about programs or policies—it is about the lived experience of students, families, and teachers. It is about how we reflect Christ in the way we teach, coach, encourage, and discipline. It is about creating an environment where biblical truth is not only taught but lived out daily in classrooms, hallways, athletic fields, and arts programs. We also recognize that true Christian education requires investing in people. Teachers and staff are the lifeblood of our school. Their commitment to academic excellence and spiritual discipleship is what sets Phoenix Christian apart. The Board is committed to doing everything possible in supporting Jeff Blake to retain and attract excellent faculty, so that every student has the benefit of strong role models and mentors who both teach with skill and live with conviction. Another key priority for us is partnership. Phoenix Christian thrives through the involvement of parents, churches, alumni, and community partners. Parents model what it means to value Christ-centered education. Churches provide spiritual support and encouragement. Alumni represent the fruit of our mission, carrying the values of Phoenix Christian into their workplaces, homes, and

3

neighborhoods. And our community partners extend our ability to serve students well. Together, this network of relationships strengthens and sustains our mission. Finally, as a Board we are committed to accountability and focus. In the coming year, we will be tracking a concise set of key measures: enrollment, tuition health, family satisfaction, financial position, and donor engagement. These scorecard metrics keep us aligned on what matters most and ensure that Phoenix Christian’s leadership remains focused on outcomes that truly impact students and families. As we begin this new year, I am filled with hope. Not because every challenge has been solved, but because God has proven Himself faithful time and time again. We are convinced that Phoenix Christian’s best days are still ahead. We believe the students in our classrooms today are being prepared to serve Christ in ways that will shape the future of our city, our nation, and even the world. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your prayers, your generosity, and your trust. Your partnership makes it possible for Phoenix Christian to remain a place where Christ is honored, students are equipped, and families are supported. Together, we are investing in more than education—we are investing in transformed lives and a brighter future. With gratitude and hope,

HOMECOMING – Diamond Jubilee 75 Years of Excellence What an unforgettable 75th Homecoming Week! Our Diamond Jubilee Celebration was filled with joy, reconnection, and God’s blessings as we welcomed alumni, families, and friends back to campus. From the Legacy Dinner at the Orchard to a packed Alumni Chapel with nearly 700 students and guests, every moment reflected the rich history and bright future of Phoenix Christian. The weekend continued with brunch at Old Path’s Café, a lively campus carnival, spirited Cougar football, and reunions of past championship teams. We closed the celebration in worship, dedicating both the past 75 years and the next 75 to our Loving Father. Thank you to all who joined us—your love and support strengthen our mission to educate minds, form hearts, and equip hands in a Christcentered environment.

From the Editor As I continue to reflect on our huge year of celebration, our 75th year, I am so proud of how we celebrated! From the night that LAUNCHED us into our 75th year, to our Diamond Jubilee Homecoming Week, and then our exquisite Diamond Gala, we reveled in our rich and lasting legacy and the incredible ways God is shaping and molding Phoenix Christian for the next generation. Having spent much of my life at Phoenix Christian, I feel particularly honored to help tell her story. The story that began in a small farmhouse in Kansas. And then journeyed to Arizona for a new life. This little family, the Weed family, leaned on the scripture, “Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls” – Jeremiah 6:12. Old Paths Bible School later became Phoenix Christian in 1949. They believed in Christian education, teaching TRUTH always, in all situations. I think I feel a deep connection to this story. My story is similar. My dad graduated from Phoenix Christian in 1966 and later moved to Iowa with his bride and began a family. My parents had a strong desire to send their children to a Christian school but at the time, there were not many Christian schools in Des Moines. So they uprooted our family and moved west so we could attend Light and Life (now Phoenix Christian). And today – my children are walking the same halls, encountering God’s TRUTH in every classroom and through the living curriculum of our faculty and staff. We look a little different today. We are beautifully diverse in so many ways, reflecting the Kingdom. His light is shining bright in this place, and we are still walking the “old paths” experiencing the goodness of God.

JAMES R. WICKERSHAM AWARD Kassandra Saravia The award is named after Mr. Wickersham, who served at Phoenix Christian for 33 years. He truly represented the highest level of character and spiritual leadership. With these ideals in mind, every year Phoenix Christian recognizes a student or students in the senior class who have distinguished themselves in one or more of the following areas: Consistent Christian Character; Serving successfully in leadership and in positions of responsibility; Has demonstrated other positive qualities worthy of recognition. Congratulations to Kassandra Saravia, recipient of the James R. Wickersham Award.

ATHLETES OF THE YEAR Isabella Irving-Bates & Reuben Guerrero This year’s female athlete of the year, Isabella Irving-Bates, is probably one of the hardest working athletes. Last season she won the state championship medal in the 100-meter dash and set the PC school record. This year, 2025, she broke her PC record from last year by running a 12.58 and bringing home the silver in track. Isabella will become a Lumberjack at Northern Arizona this fall!

This year’s male athlete of the year recipient has redefined what it means to be an elite student-athlete at PC. Congratulations Reuben Guerrero. On the court, the field, and in the locker room, he led by example. He trained hard, competed fiercely, and inspired his teammates with a work ethic grounded in faith. He played not for self-glory, but to honor God — consistently reminding us that true greatness is found in service to others and in glorifying Christ through our gifts.

Alumnus Donald Van Hofwegen’s life is a powerful example of what it means to be submitted fully to the ways of Jesus. Whether in his home, his workplace, or his church community, he leads not with show, but with steady faithfulness and Spirit-led strength. He has raised his children with intentionality and love, pointing them to the Lord. He loves his wife with the kind of godly, sacrificial love that mirrors Christ and the Church. And through life’s trials, Donald has persevered — continuing to serve the Lord and others with integrity and joy. His nominator, Nick Johnson, Class of 2013, characterizes Donald as the “epitome of a servant leader.”

2025 COUGAR

ATHLETICS

This has been an amazing year for our athletic program, where many teams advanced. We were blessed to have multiple teams earn spots in the AIA playoffs, one that advanced to the Final Four. We were also blessed to have many individuals that earned berths in the AIA State Championships, including a new state champion. It was truly an incredible year!

Varsity Baseball - Championship

Last season was unforgettable—not only because we won 25 games and captured the State Title, but because of the journey along the way. With just two seniors, our young team grew tremendously, both as athletes and as young men. Watching their progression was deeply fulfilling, even as I reminded them often, “We need to be reminded more than we need to be taught something new.” Though we knew we had talent, much of the season felt below our potential, and late losses left us struggling. The twoweek break before playoffs—normally a

frustration—became a blessing. During that time, we regrouped, refocused, and emerged a different team. Game by game, the boys found confidence, composure, and determination. Key hits, defensive plays, and clutch pitching propelled us forward until we ultimately claimed the championship. Looking ahead, we expect to be even stronger this year. 2A baseball is full of tough competition, and many teams will be improved. Our goal remains the same: to be the best individual players we can be, and together, the best team possible. The rest, as always, is in God’s hands. – COACH BAND

15

Men’s Basketball This season has been a journey filled with both triumphs and trials, and through it all, we’ve seen God’s hand at work shaping our team and strengthening our character. More than wins and losses, this year was about growing as young men of faith—on and off the court. I’m incredibly proud of how our players supported one another, stayed committed, and honored Christ in the way they competed. With the strong foundation we’ve built and the spiritual and athletic growth we’ve seen, I’m confident that the future of our program is bright. God is doing something special here, and I can’t wait to see what He has in store for next season and beyond.” - COACH STRYCZEK

Women’s Basketball Reflecting on this last season of basketball I am proud of the growth that both JV and Varsity had despite having a challenging season. Individually most of the girls have grown to enjoy basketball and have discovered what it means to be part of a team. I have loved being their coach and getting to know each of them on and off the court. They’re going to do big this next year, and I am excited to cheer them on! – COACH WATKINS

Cheer I could not be prouder of the cheer team this year! We had 23 athletes join the squad this year. We started the year off with a home camp and learned a ton for our upcoming season, we hit the ground running with football season and the girls did an amazing homecoming routine and then we went right into basketball season and they got to perform at the Suns Arena which was an exciting night for everyone. I love all of these girls so very much! Exciting things to come for this great group of women! – COACH HOUSE

Golf This golf season was filled with fun, growth, and great memories. We welcomed several new players who had just picked up the game, and while there was a learning curve early on, they quickly caught on and made steady progress throughout the year. Our four returning players showed noticeable improvement from the end of last season, which was great to see. Special shout out to two of our seniors, CS Wilcoxson and JJ Brigowatz, who qualified for the state tournament for the fourth consecutive year—an incredible accomplishment. We’re looking forward to watching JJ’s college career at Northern Nazarene College in Idaho! – COACH BRIGOWATZ

Football The 2024 Phoenix Christian Cougars football team delivered an impressive season, finishing with a 9-2 overall record and an undefeated 6-0 mark in the 2A Agua Fria region, earning them the region championship. The Cougars showcased a dominant defense and a potent rushing attack throughout the season. Key victories included a 20-13 win over Camp Verde, where junior Cashis Grimwade caught two touchdown passes and recorded two interceptions. The team also secured decisive wins against Sequoia Pathway (65-0), Glendale Prep (55-0), and Mountainside (55-0), demonstrating their offensive prowess and defensive strength. Despite their strong regular season, the Cougars faced a tough loss in the first round of the AIA 2A State Playoffs, falling to Veritas Prep by a narrow margin of 20-23. With a strong core of returning players and a culture of excellence, the future looks bright for Cougar Football. The 2024 season set a high standard, and the program is poised to build on this success in the coming years. – COACH KINDRED

Men’s Soccer This year was a remarkable season for Phoenix Christian soccer, marked by our first winning record and playoff appearance in over a decade. While the success on the field was exciting, we’re even more proud of the growth off the field—developing as young men through discipline in practice, joy in competition, and integrity in all we do. We were led by a committed core of returning players who have worked hard for years, alongside several new additions. We anticipate an exciting 2025-26 season. – COACH BEHMER

Women’s Soccer This year marked an exciting milestone as Phoenix Christian launched its first-ever women’s soccer program, made possible through the initiative and leadership of students like Hannah De La Cruz and Marta Vander Maas. With 17 players on the roster—many playing organized soccer for the first time—this team showed incredible commitment, growth, and integrity both on and off the field. Their hard work paid off with back-to-back wins to close out the season, finishing strong and laying a solid foundation for the future. What truly set this team apart, however, was their heart: weekly player-led Bible studies and intentional discipleship created a Christ-centered culture that defined their experience. We’re proud of this historic first season and look forward to a bright future for women’s soccer at Phoenix Christian. – COACH FRERICHS

Softball Our theme for this year was built around Romans 12:4-6. As a team we are many, but do not all have the same function or role however, we are one body in Christ. We finished 17-5 overall and 10-1 within the region finishing ranked #11. While we fell short of our goal, we left hungry for next season! – COACH FLISYN

17

Track & Field Varsity Track & Field’s season has been marked by significant growth and learning. We had a large, young team of 32 athletes, presenting achievements and challenges. Shout-out to our men’s 4x100 championship run and Malakhai’s championship high jump this year! – COACH LEARY

Volleyball We graduated 10 senior varsity athletes last year, so I knew this season would be one of rebuilding and challenge. It’s easy to say that before the first game, but far harder to live it day to day. While we may not have had the championship season we hoped for, it was an invaluable one. These girls proved they can do hard things, step into discomfort, and still show up. Girls, if you take one lesson from this season, let it be this: no matter the wins or losses, you matter. The Lord loves you, He sees you, and He has great purpose for your life. He has equipped you to overcome challenges and hard times. Difficult seasons don’t last forever—new seasons always come. Never give up. – COACH JOHNSON

Wrestling The 2024-25 season was anchored by two incredible senior Captains, Jahari McQuiller and Neo Lewis, who helped build a foundation for Phoenix Christian Wrestling to build from. This team endured the most competitive wrestling schedule in the State. This pace drove Neo’s incredible rise from merely being a State Qualifier who lost both matches at State his Junior Year to placing 4th in State in arguably the toughest weigh class in D4! Behind these two seniors is a strong group of young wrestlers who will be looking to break out next season – Danny Sanchez, Avi De La Rosa, Tim Randolph, Kevin Palafax, Aaron Whitten, Mickey Nunez, and Lamar Fite with a core of a dozen incoming Freshmen! Our Girl’s wrestling team was led by returning State Qualifier Adeiya Leyva and incoming Freshman Sophia Alvarado. Both will be returning next season to build upon this firm foundation and be leaders on and off the mat. We rebuilt our wrestling room, invested in new mats for the first time in nearly 40 years, and have an incredible coaching staff built from PC alumni who themselves competed in the AZ State Championship match and know the might efforts needed to win it all. But most importantly – we know that all these efforts are All for Him – Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. – COACH ABAJIAN 17
