Music isPowerful
IT EVOK TRANSPORTS AUDIENCES, AND INSPIRES Our season begins with a historic anniversary: 50 years ago Duke Ellington and his orchestra played his concert of sacred music at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in 1966. Ever since I saw the poster from the original concert on the wall where we rehearse, this concert has been on my bucket list! I can’t wait to celebrate this iconic performance which blurred the line between sacred and secular and united audiences through jazz. At Christmastime, we’ll sing arrangements of one of the world’s most well-known carols (and my personal favorite), “Silent Night, Holy Night.” And in March, I so look forward to sharing the exotic and romantic love songs of Latin America and Spain through “Coro y Guitarra.” Our season ends with a ‘Mix Tape’ of your favorite songs -- get creative, choose, submit, and vote on what we sing! Be transported. Be inspired. Join us and experience the evocative power of music. We look forward to sharing this journey with you!
KES EMOTIONS, S CREATIVITY.
Charles Bruffy, Artistic Director
Duke Ellington has God’s gift of genius. He has bridged the gap between the sacred and the secular. —Reverend Elmer Usher, Dean of Trinity Cathedral Phoenix, November 1966

NOVEMBER 12 - 13 Remarkably, back in 1966 jazz legend Duke Ellington arrived in downtown Phoenix with his big band where they performed his concert of “sacred music” with the Trinity Cathedral Choir. This pivotal work signified a new musical movement – one that combined jazz and spirituality, exhibiting Ellington’s showmanship and his deep religious faith. Now exactly 50 years later, we pay homage to this momentous event on the historic anniversary. Joined by the 16-piece MCC Performing Arts Center Jazz Ensemble, this spectacular concert features pieces from Ellington’s ground-breaking program of sacred masterworks. A CHORALE CHRISTMAS
DECEMBER 16 - 20 First penned in 1816 for a small pilgrimage church in Austria, Stille Nacht has become an iconic carol for the holiday season. This year’s Chorale Christmas will also feature familiar favorites like “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” -- proving it just isn’t Christmas until you’ve heard us sing.
