These concerts explore monumental figures, both real and legendary — including a moving tribute to John F. Kennedy (“Take Him Earth, for Cherishing”)

by Herbert Howells, and Bob Chilcott’s stunning arrangement of “MLK” by U2. We’ll celebrate some biblical heroes in spirituals by Moses Hogan plus three creative stories of Sirens — those mythical beings who lure sailors to their death by singing songs of overpowering beauty — written by Mason Bates. We’ll also present the world premiere of a new composition written especially for us by Shawn Crouch, and we’ll perform some favorites by the Beatles. (Yes, THE Beatles!)

Join us for a program focused on American church traditions, featuring some of the mostloved anthems and hymns of all time, including “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “With a Voice of Singing,” and of course the title song, “Rock of Ages.” The second half of these concerts welcomes a special guest — popular composer and pianist Mark Hayes — performing some of his most famous works with the Chorale. Hayes’s music draws from such diverse styles as gospel, jazz, pop, classical, and folk Mark hayes to achieve a truly American sound.

Our final concerts explore the splendor of Russia with works by 20th-century Russian composer Georgy Vasilyevich Sviridov. Charles and the Chorale are committed to bringing attention to lesser-known composers. And while Sviridov’s music remains little known in the West, his works receive high praise in his homeland for their memorable lyrical melodies, national flavor, and for the great expression of Russia and the Russian soul in his music.

Boys to Men

FEstivAl oF tHE MAlE voicE Saturday afternoon November 5, 2011 concert begins at 4:30 pm

Now in its eighth year and hosted by the Orpheus Male Chorus, the Boys to Men project aims to promote community-wide access to choral training and development for young male singers. Junior and senior high school male singers are engaged by the highest level of artistic leadership and are encouraged to continue singing after their school experiences. Over 250 men and boys from the Orpheus Male Chorus, Arizona State University, Phoenix Metropolitan Men’s Chorus, Spirit of Phoenix, Phoenix Chorale and local junior and senior high schools join together in singing at this yearly festival of the male voice. FREE open Rehearsals Phoenix Chorale Free Open Rehearsals offer an opportunity for anyone (anyone!) to experience the Phoenix Chorale for free — and to get a special behind-the-scenes look at music in the making.

We’ll host four open rehearsals this year on Friday evenings — two in the fall and two in the spring— as we prepare our new concerts. It’s first-rate music in a very casual atmosphere. No tickets, no reservations, just come as you are, whenever you want, and stay as long as you’d like. Don’t be shy!

Recordings The Grammy Award-winning Phoenix Chorale is regarded as one of the finest professional choral ensembles in America. The Chorale has developed S that reputation through live perS E SPOTL formances across the U.S. and ar y M in irg Canada, but has also created a to the V Hymns series of recordings treasured by Y BRUFF S music lovers and played by radio LE R CHA stations around the globe. The newest addition to this collection, Northern Lights, features music composed by Ola Gjeilo, the Chorale’s 2009-10 composer-in-residence, and will be released in early 2012.

The Phoenix Chorale was the first North American choir to release an album on Chandos Records — one of the largest independent classical record labels in the world — in a continuing partnership that began with the 2004 album Shakespeare in Song.

The Chorale’s Spotless Rose was released on Chandos in 2008 and received two Grammy Award nominations, including “Best Classical Album,” and won a Grammy for “Best Small Ensemble Performance.”

Also in 2008, Rheinberger: Sacred Choral Works, the Phoenix Chorale’s third joint-recording with the Kansas City Chorale, received Grammy nominations for “Best Choral Performance” and “Best Surround Sound.”

The first joint-recording for the two chorales, Eternal Rest, was released in 2005. The second, Grechaninov: Passion Week, came out in 2007 and received four Grammy nominations, including “Best Classical Album,” “Best Choral Performance,” and “Best Surround Sound Album,” and won a Grammy Award for “Best Engineered Album, Classical.”

Attending concerts

The Concert Experience

The Phoenix Chorale performs in select venues across the Valley. All of our concerts are General Admission, with a Premium Seating section reserved for subscribers. The concert box office opens one hour before concert time. Doors open for seating 30 minutes before concert time.

Our evening concerts are performed with one intermission. Our afternoon matinee concerts are approximately one hour in length and are performed without intermission. The selection of musical pieces at matinee and evening programs may vary slightly.

Parking

Parking is free at all concert locations.

Metro Light Rail

Take the train to concerts at Trinity Cathedral (Roosevelt Arts District stop, then crossing First Avenue) or Brophy Chapel (Central & Campbell stop, then a 10-minute walk north along the east side of Central Avenue).

Accessibility

The Phoenix Chorale is committed to the Americans with Disabilities Act by performing at venues that are accessible to everyone. Braille and large-format programs are also available upon request. When ordering your tickets, please let us know if you have special needs or require accessible seating. For more information, please call us at 602-253-2224.

Children

Concerts are open to children ages 6 and over when accompanied by an adult. All children, regardless of age, must have a ticket to enter the concert.

25 & Under Rush Tickets

New this season! Starting 15 minutes before concert time, anyone 25 years old and younger (with ID) can purchase Rush Tickets for just $5 each. Rush Tickets are subject to availability, cannot be reserved in advance, and are not guaranteed.

Purchase subscription packages, individual concert tickets, gift certificates, and CDs online, through the Box Office by calling 602-253-2224 (M-F/10-3), by mail (using the order form in this brochure), or in person at our concerts. Online sales for each concert close in advance of the performance time.

Sterling Beeaff of KBAQ 89.5FM Your Classical Companion hosts and moderates these pre-concert talks for an in-depth look behind the music. “Talks at Trinity” feature up-close and personal talks with Charles Bruffy, Chorale singers, and special guests. Talks begin one hour before the concert starts and are held only at our home venue, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Phoenix.
