D-Day and Phoenix Arts

It’s estimated that there are less than six British D-Day veterans still living, so as the 80th anniversary draws near and we begin to reflect on the sacrifice of so many, the part played by Bordon also needs to be remembered.

As recorded by the Woolmer Forest Heritage Society, in 1944 there were 3,100 staff, plus plenty of equipment and vehicles stockpiled locally, ready for the invasion of Europe. Whether the Army School remained open is lost in time, but being only a short walk from Bordon Garrison, it would have been alive to the sounds of preparation.

As a cultural organisation with our roots firmly and proudly embedded within military service, we are joining other local charities and organisations to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. On Thursday 6th June we’re screening a classic D-Day film, and partnering with the Woolmer Forest Heritage Society to host a display of D-Day memorabilia.

On Saturday 8th June, using silent disco technology, Phoenix Arts will move to the Town Park at The Shed and allow you to be at one with the music, sounds and stories of D-Day.

We’re proud to be involved with this event. And remember, on days likes this, Phoenix Arts is local and guided by you.

Thank you to our friends at...

Austen’s Women: LADY SUSAN

Saturday 27th April, 7:30 PM

Tickets: £16.00 (Rob’s Theatre Club £15.00)

Austen’s Women are back — in a brand-new show! Devil-may-care Lady Susan, the coquettish black widow, hunting down not one, but two, fortunes; oppressed, rebellious daughter Frederica; longsuffering sister-in-law Catherine; family matriarch Mrs De Courcy; and insouciant best friend, Alicia.

Return to the Regency (or rather, Georgian era) in this darkly comic tale of society and the women trapped within it; their struggles, their desires, their temptations and manipulations — and at the vanguard, Lady Susan: charming, scheming, witty, and powerful; taking on society and making it her own. But has she met her match?

Based on Jane Austen’s first full-length work from 1794, and created entirely from letters, Austen’s Women: LADY SUSAN is performed by Rebecca Vaughan and directed by Andrew Margerison.

All Are Welcome

The Phoenix Players are an Amateur Dramatics Group based at The Phoenix Theatre. They stage a number of wide-ranging shows during the year, including plays, musicals, comedies, and their popular pantomime (every January).

They welcome anyone who wants to get involved, so why not pop along to the Phoenix Theatre on a Monday or Thursday evening and say hello. They can often be found rehearsing a play or a musical show from 7.30pm -10pm and would love to see some new faces.

They have social events throughout the year and the occasional karaoke night when they’re not rehearsing their next show.

If being on stage isn’t your thing, get involved elsewhere. The Players always need set builders, painters, costumers and makeup artists – not to mention lighting and sound wizards!
