What’s An NPO Rob?
It’s a question I’ve been answering a lot following Arts Council England’s decision to award us National Portfolio Organisation status in November 2022. Crucially, it’s 3 years’ funding to support our creative ambitions, but it’s also an invite to join a top table where The Phoenix Theatre & Arts now sits alongside the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company and Chichester Festival Theatre. Yes really!
Securing NPO status means a lot to me personally. I’ve just reached the grand old age of 60 and having committed to project Phoenix for over 12 years now, I want my legacy locally to include creative projects that serve the community that has welcomed me for over a decade. Those projects will, I hope, grow to encourage the next generation of artists, performers and cultural leaders to emerge from Whitehill & Bordon, and in doing so carry forward a creative insight into the town that helped shape their talents. After a lot of hard work by Pivale, a local web development team, and our own Thomas Hiller, we have a new website. Following on from our new ticketing system the website is already proving a huge asset and will introduce to many of you for the first time the term Phoenix Arts. Don’t worry it’s not the end of your favourite little venue, it’s more a recognition that we are taking our services beyond the former Army School in Station Road and in doing becoming an umbrella organisation for the arts locally.
