WHERE IT ALL BEGAN WHERE WE ARE CURRENTLY THE FUTURE OF HEART SURGERY
The son of a barber, Daniel Hale Williams founded the first black-owned hospital in America, and performed the world’s first ever successful heart surgery, in 1893.
Current advances include percutaneous aortic valve replacements, which replace the heart’s aortic valve through the blood vessels, as opposed to open heart surgery. There are also improvements in ventricular assist devices, which are implantable pumps for people with weakened hearts or heart failure.
The future of cardiac surgery hinges on the surgeon’s ability to improve techniques, innovate in therapies, and diversify practice.
