Grand President’s Message Brothers: The day before I sat down to write this message, I bumped into a Brother on the streets of Manhattan that I have known for 20 plus years. We originally met when he was serving as one of two undergraduate representatives to the Grand Council and I was Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation President. We have kept up over the years, but the encounter was so random and uplifting at the same time. This brief catch-up was the highlight of my day — sharing a moment of Brotherhood.

As you read through the Signet, I hope you get the sense of purpose and energy that our Brotherhood continues to instill in undergraduate and alumni Brothers. Fraternity continues to inspire — Phi Sigma Kappa continues to inspire in our Chapter houses, in the classroom, throughout campus communities, on and off the field, at alumni gatherings (big and small); and in quiet (and loud) Brotherhood moments.

Together, we continue to build something special: Brotherhood bonds that last a lifetime.

How we think about the Phi Sig experience is ever evolving: innovation is top of mind.

We want to meet Brothers where they are.

Over the past year we have revamped the format and timing of our marquee undergraduate training programs: Conclave: Officer and Adviser Academy and the Shonk Undergraduate Leadership School. We held our first alumni and volunteer town hall.

And we also held our first programming for the parents of undergraduate Brothers.

We are also proud to announce that every chapter now has its own dedicated website available to it, powered through myPhiSig. Unlike social media accounts that can go quiet, get lost during officer transitions, or multiply into competing pages, these websites are housed within our national platform and carry forward seamlessly from one generation of chapter leadership to the next. They give alumni a reliable place to find out what is happening with their chapter, and they give active Brothers a professional home to tell their story and connect with the communities that built them. Alumni club sites will follow soon, extending that same connectivity to our local alumni communities across the country. For any undergraduates wanting to learn more about their chapter website, please contact Avery Sallee (avery@phisigmakappa.org).

The Man in the Middle of the Room This past spring, our chapter at Radford University marked fifty years since its original chartering; I was there. So were the men who built it, the men who carried it through the decades in between, and the men who hold it now.

I was initiated in 2007. Standing in that room, I did Joe Kern the math without meaning to. There were brothers Executive Director ahead of me from an era I know only through stories, and brothers behind me who were not yet born when I took my obligation. I was almost exactly in the middle. Fifty years of Phi Sigma Kappa on one side, fifty on the other, and me somewhere near its center. I did not expect what that would do to me.

Fifty years apart, and we were starting every conversation already knowing something true about one another. That is what belonging does. Being a part of the same group of anything disarms you almost instantly. You begin from shared experience and a sense of who the other person is, because their values and yours already line up. Here is the part worth sitting with. The principles we hold are not ours alone. Anyone who goes to college understands the value of Scholarship. Anyone who wants to be a good person understands that Character is what carries it. Brotherhood, in some form, is what every person is looking for. None of that is unique to Phi Sigma Kappa. What is ours is what we do with it. We should not simply hold these principles. We should challenge them, in ourselves, in each other, and we should expect to be challenged back. That is also how they pass on. Fraternity is not only what it makes of you. It is what you make possible in someone else. Sometimes that is active. You teach a younger brother a skill, a way of thinking, a perspective he did not have. More often it is passive. He watches you go to study tables when no one is making you. He watches how you treat the people around campus who can do nothing for you. He watches you own a mistake out loud instead of burying it. We know people pick up bad habits by watching. They pick up the good ones the same way. How we carry ourselves is the lesson, whether we intend it or not.

This is older than any fraternity. Think about a family. Parents try to give their children more than they were given. Those children grow and strive to give their own children more still. No one keeps a ledger. You hand forward the best of what you have because that is simply what you do for the people who come next. We have always had a name for that instinct. It is inscribed on the desk that now sits in our Archive. We say it at our most important moments: do unto others as you would have others do unto you. That is fraternity, lived forward.

So here is what I would ask you to carry out of this issue. Be the brother, the adviser, the alumnus you wish you had when you needed one. Give the men who come after you what you wish the men before you had given you. Not because anyone is keeping score, but because no one is. If we do it right, we always receive a little bit less than we give out.

Foundation President’s Message What We Are Trusted to Carry Most organizations spend a great deal of time talking about what they would do with more support. The Foundation has a better job. We get to turn what brothers already believe into something a brother can actually use: a scholarship that removes a barrier, a leadership program that changes a young man’s sense of what he is capable of, a conversation about mental health that reaches someone before he believes he is alone. None of that happens without you.

This year, more than six hundred brothers and friends stepped forward during our Day of Giving fundraising event. I want to be clear about what that number is. It is not a leaderboard. It is six hundred individual decisions that Phi Sigma Kappa was worth investing in, made by people who could have done anything else with that gift and chose this instead.

Broad participation like that matters as much as any single figure, because it says the belief in this Fraternity is wide, not narrow. The Day of Giving Cup is not the point, but the people behind it are. Three communities stood out this year, each in its own way. Union led the field overall. Northern Illinois rallied the most in total giving. Stetson turned out to be the broadest base of donors of any chapter in the Fraternity. The divisions exist precisely because there is more than one way to show up, and these three showed all of them.

None of that happens on its own. It happens because someone captains a chapter, works the phones, and asks ten brothers to stand with him, and then quietly gives himself. Chad Burney (Central Missouri ’05) and Sean Hamilton (Stetson ’89) did exactly that this year. They did the asking and they did the giving, and they did it while also serving on this Foundation’s board. Sean helped lead the charge at Stetson, the chapter that turned out to be the broadest base of donors.

Recognition also belongs to the chapter that entrusted its own education fund to the Foundation this year, an act of confidence we do not take lightly, and to the leaders who give without being asked. Our Grand President, Dave Cohen, leads the Grand Chapter and quietly supports it as a donor. That he does both, and does the second without anyone prompting him, is the example I would point any brother toward.

Here is what I have come to understand in this role. People do not give because they were asked to. They give because they trust that the Fraternity will use the gift the way they hoped it would. Honoring that trust is the entire job of the Foundation, and it is the standard we hold ourselves to with every dollar that passes through our hands.

There is something in it for the giver, too, though we rarely say it out loud. Being a Phi Sig was never four years. It is a lifetime. Giving back is one of the few ways a man stays genuinely connected to that across the decades, long after the chapter house is behind him. The brothers I know who give are not lighter for it. They are more connected.

The Foundation thinks in decades, not in years. What is given now becomes the ground a brother who has not yet taken his obligation will one day stand on. We are building that ground deliberately and carefully, and I will tell you plainly that the years ahead of this Fraternity look bright from where I sit, because of who is choosing to invest in them right now.

To every brother and friend who gave, advocated, or simply believed enough to act this year, the Foundation sees you, and we are grateful. You have our word that we will be worthy of it.

A Message from Phi Sigma Kappa Properties The Roof Over the Brotherhood Most brothers never think about Properties, and honestly, that is usually a sign we are doing our job. We are the part of Phi Sigma Kappa that deals in the unglamorous things: loans, roofs, leases, reserve accounts, the financing that turns a building into a chapter’s lasting home. When it works, no one notices. When it does not, everyone notices.

Let me tell you plainly what we are trying to do, because it has not changed in years and it will not change now. We want a functioning alumni or housing corporation standing behind every chapter, and we want the housing at every chapter to be better next year than it is this year. That is the whole job. Everything we vote on in our meetings comes back to those two things. Notice what that goal is not. It is not Properties owning or running chapter housing from Indianapolis. The strongest housing in this Fraternity is local. It is alumni who know the building, know the chapter, and have something invested in both. Our role is to come alongside those men, the house corporation directors and alumni volunteers who quietly refinance a mortgage, chase a leak, and sign papers on a Tuesday night when no one is watching. They do some of the hardest work in this organization and receive the least credit for it. I want them to hear, from me, that we see it. Students have changed, and housing must keep up. What a young man expects from where he lives, what is safe, what is sound, what is financially sustainable over the long term, is not what it was twenty years ago, and pretending otherwise is how chapters lose houses. So, we do not guess. We go where the people who do this work professionally gather; we learn from outside our own walls, and we bring it back.

Evolving is not a slogan for us. It is the only way a property survives a generation.

I will be honest about one thing, because you would know if I were not. A house does not make a chapter. I have watched strong chapters thrive in modest buildings and beautiful houses sit half empty. The building is never the point. But when a chapter is strong, the last thing that should hold it back is a roof no one planned to replace or a corporation no one kept alive. That is what we exist to prevent.

If your chapter has a housing question, or no alumni corporation behind it, or a building that worked in 1995 and does not work now, call us earlier than you think you should.

The conversations that go well are almost always the ones that start before there is a crisis. We are building toward something specific. A Fraternity where a brother who comes back in twenty years walks into a chapter home that is better than the one he left, not worse. We will get there the only way this work is ever done, one chapter, one corporation, one roof at a time.

2026 Conclave: Officer and Adviser Academy

By Drew Kerwood Phi Sigma Kappa hosted its eighth annual national Conclave: Officer and Adviser Academy in Washington, DC from January 9th to 11th. This year’s Conclave invited chapter Presidents, Sentinels, Recruitment Chairmen and chapter alumni volunteers, with 95 attendees, representing 51 undergraduate chapters.

This year’s event was packed full of engaging programming and conversations.

Each position track included a mix of small group sessions covering issues directly related to their role, and large group sessions exploring general fraternity issues. This combination of topics and discussion spaces helped attendees connect the part their role plays in their local chapter, and in the larger sense of the fraternity as a whole.

Some of the highlights from the general sessions included:

• The weekend kicked off with an education session providing attendees a deep dive into the rituals of Phi Sigma Kappa. This session was designed to provide attendees the opportunity to learn more about the different rituals in Phi Sigma Kappa, ask questions about how to perform rituals at their local chapters, and discuss the values and themes shared through the rituals of the fraternity with alumni members. Student feedback for this session was very positive, specifically for how approachable it made ritual discussions.

• Chapter operations were another major talking point for the weekend.

Presenters provided attendees with a refresher on the fraternity’s new Accreditation program, how to locate helpful resources and complete important tasks in myPhiSig, and shared helpful strategies for ensuring smooth and effective chapter meetings. Attendee participation in these discussions helped expand the conversation and provided everyone with a lot of new ideas.

• Saturday afternoon, Chase Stockton presented a risk management session that focused on the importance of reporting incidents, big and small, to IHQ to ensure they are handled effectively. Chase also reviewed how chapters can utilize the RealResponse platform to submit concerns anonymously, if needed. Avery Sallee, Phi Sigma Kappa’s Communications Manager, shared important reminders on how what they share through social media reflects on their local chapter, both good and bad.

• Chapter Presidents, Sentinels and Advisers also discussed a series of issues and how they would handle them in their chapter, with a focus on utilizing chapter and member accountability methods, and how they could try to prevent similar issues from taking shape at their local chapters.

The President Track continues to serve as the backbone of the Conclave. This year, the President Track was led by Drew Kerwood, Phi Sigma Kappa’s Senior Director of Learning and Development. The track sessions covered a wide range of topics including how to be successful in the president role, their role in chapter and member accountability, knowing how to manage and delegate the heavy workload, and how to walk that fine line between being an officer and a brother.

This year will be the first year that Sentinels have been invited to an in-person Officer Academy, having previously had tracks at virtual Officer Academies in 2021, 2022 and 2023. The Sentinel was invited this year to have conversations about ritual and chapter accountability methods. The Sentinel track was led by Chase Stockton, Director of Member Safety & Accountability, who was recently initiated into Phi Sigma Kappa at the 70th Convention in Las Vegas.

The Recruitment track, led by Luke Coogan and Dillon Davis, Senior Growth Specialists, focused on helping Recruitment chairs develop effective recruitment plans that will help promote steady, sustainable chapter growth. Some of the topics covered in the Recruitment track included developing effective recruitment infrastructure and getting all members of the chapter involved in the recruitment process, the role recruitment has to play in preventing hazing behaviors, using values-based recruitment strategies, and how to manage bid refusals.

This year’s Adviser Track welcomed 13 chapter advisers and members of alumni advisory boards, offering programming specifically designed to support first-year volunteers. The curriculum, developed and facilitated by Joey Teeple, Director of Volunteer Initiatives, aimed to equip newer advisers with the tools and knowledge necessary for success in their roles.

Key focus areas included an introduction to Phi Sigma Kappa’s organizational policies and procedures, strategies for fostering accountability within chapters, and the benefits of building

strong partnerships with campus stakeholders. Additionally, the program emphasized effective methods for engaging Gen Z students, providing advisers with insights to better connect with and mentor today’s collegiate members.

In addition to the undergraduate and adviser tracks, the fraternity’s governing boards also held their respective meetings. This included the Grand Council, the Foundation Board of Trustees, and the Properties Board. This overlapping of the Conclave and Board

meetings also provided a great opportunity for board members to interact with Conclave attendees.

The 2026 Conclave: Officer and Adviser Academy continues the trend of successful officer training opportunities with positive feedback and remarks from the undergraduate and alumni attendees.

The Grand Council and IHQ Staff appreciate all those who were able to attend this year’s Conclave, and look forward to the 2027 Conclave next year.

Phi Sigma Kappa’s strength has always come from the brothers who choose to lead and serve beyond their own chapter experience. Across the country, alumni

volunteers dedicate countless hours to ensuring the Fraternity continues to grow, support undergraduate brothers, and uphold the values that have defined Phi Sig for generations. At the center of that commitment stands the Grand Council.

Comprised of alumni leaders from a variety of chapters and professional backgrounds, the Grand Council serves as the Fraternity’s volunteer board of directors, helping guide the future of Phi Sigma Kappa while supporting the mission of bettering the individual, the community, and the world. While many brothers see the impact of Phi Sig through leadership schools, chapter support, educational programming, expansion efforts, and alumni engagement, much of that work is made possible because of the dedication of volunteers serving behind the scenes. Grand Council members balance careers, families, and personal commitments while continuing to give back to the Fraternity that helped shape their own lives. Their service reflects the lifelong nature of brotherhood and the belief that Phi Sigma

Kappa is strengthened when alumni remain actively involved long after graduation.

The commitment of these leaders goes far beyond meetings and policy decisions. Grand Council members regularly travel to Fraternity events, connect with undergraduate brothers, mentor volunteers and staff, and help guide the organization through both opportunities and challenges. Their leadership helps ensure that future generations of Phi Sigs have access to meaningful experiences, strong support systems, and opportunities for personal growth.

Volunteer leadership has always played an important role in Phi Sigma Kappa’s history. From chapter advisers to regional volunteers to Grand Council members, generations of brothers have stepped forward to invest their time and talents into the Brotherhood. That continued dedication is a testament to the lasting impact Phi Sig has on its members and the shared responsibility of preserving the organization for years to come.

STAFF UPDATES Michael Weber Associate Executive Director Michael, an Iowa native and graduate of Iowa State University, has spent more than a decade dedicated to advancing the fraternity experience. A member of Acacia Fraternity, he served the organization for 12 years, most recently as Executive Director of Operations & Growth. In this role, he championed operational excellence, strengthened organizational health, and enhanced member development initiatives.

In his new role with Phi Sigma Kappa, Michael oversees the organization’s financial operations, with a focus on strengthening fiscal controls and reducing outstanding chapter accounts receivable, while working directly with chapters to improve accountability and long-term sustainability. He also supports and advises on chapter conduct matters, helping navigate complex situations with an emphasis on accountability and organizational health, and provides broader guidance on day-to-day operations to enhance effectiveness and support the fraternity’s continued success.

He is excited to bring that experience to Phi Sigma Kappa and looks forward to partnering with volunteers, staff, and undergraduates to continue building a strong and values-driven brotherhood.

Rider Bond Growth Specialist Phi Sigma Kappa is proud to welcome Rider Bond to the staff team. Born and raised in Vancouver, Washington, Rider graduated from Washington State University in Spring 2026 with a degree in Business Marketing. A member of Phi Sigma Kappa’s Chi Deuteron chapter, Rider was actively involved in undergraduate leadership, serving as Social Chairman before being elected Chapter President as a sophomore. Drawing from his own experiences within the Brotherhood, Rider is excited for the opportunity to give back to the organization that gave him so much and to help support the continued growth and success of Phi Sigma Kappa.

Growth Report Over the past few years, growth has remained a central focus of Phi Sigma Kappa’s strategic plan.

The Growth Team has worked to develop new resources, establish agreements with campus partners for expansion projects through 2030, and provide specialized support to chapters.

In Fall 2025, Phi Sigma Kappa expanded at the University of Houston. Despite significant challenges, the effort resulted in the recruitment of six strong associates. The university, largely composed of commuter and non-traditional students, recently joined the Big 12 and scored highly on the Fraternity’s expansion rubric, signaling strong long-term potential.

However, the campus environment presented obstacles. Outside of fraternity and sorority life, the university disbanded its student government for more than a year, raising concerns about student fees and funding allocation. Within the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life, frequent staff turnover—including resignations during IFC recruitment—created instability across the Greek community.

As a result, planned recruitment events were inconsistent, with limited attendance and execution. This lack of structure led to unhealthy competition among chapters.

Amid these challenges, six men stepped forward to reestablish the Eta Tetarton Chapter, motivated by a desire to create a stronger, values-driven organization. They quickly demonstrated a commitment to Phi Sigma Kappa’s principles, particularly through philanthropy. Their first major initiative supported Books for Development, an organization that provides books to underserved communities. While operating in a difficult environment, the chapter

has shown steady progress and represents an opportunity to redefine fraternity life on campus beyond the stereotypical image.

Also in Fall 2025, the Xi Deuteron Chapter at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, celebrated its chartering ceremony over Halloween weekend, marking a successful return to campus. Since reestablishing in Fall 2023, the chapter rapidly built momentum, surpassing 100 members in 2024 through intentional recruitment and strong internal development.

The chartering ceremony, held November 1 at the chapter house, brought together undergraduate members, alumni, and national leadership, including Grand President David Cohen, Grand Council Director Mark Rowland, and Executive Director Joe Kern. Chapter President Colin O’Neal reflected on the group’s journey, emphasizing the commitment and perseverance that carried them from their founding to chartering in just two years.

The chapter has established a strong foundation rooted in Phi Sigma Kappa’s cardinal principles and is well-positioned for continued success on campus and in the Knoxville community.

In Fall 2024, the Growth Team, in partnership with alumni and university staff, reestablished the Zeta Triton Chapter at Montana State University. The chapter completed its first independent recruitment cycle in Fall 2025, adding ten new members and doubling its size. This growth led to increased morale, improved reputation, and stronger campus engagement.

The chapter has been active in service, volunteering weekly at a local elementary school library, participating in risk management training, and building relationships with alumni. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, as they earned recognition by winning “Pi Phi’s Phinest” and Greek Week. With continued momentum, the chapter is on track for chartering within the next year.

The Growth Team’s success is driven by dedicated staff who have committed themselves to the Fraternity beyond the industry’s typical one-year tenure.

Luke Coogan (Hope College ’23) joined the team in 2023 as a Growth Specialist and has played a key role over the past three years. He led the University of Tennessee, Knoxville expansion and contributed significantly to the development of presentations, programs, and resources while mentoring new staff members. In May, Luke will transition to the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation as an Advancement Officer, focusing on Chapter Educational Funds (CEF).

His supervisor, Lindsey Hollis, reflected on his impact, noting his dedication, creativity, and willingness to contribute new ideas. While his presence on the Growth Team will be missed, the organization is excited to see his continued contributions in his new role.

Joining the team is Rider Bond (Washington State University ’26), the Fraternity’s first West Coast-based Growth Specialist. A former chapter president and social chairman, Rider brings strong operational experience and will begin training in mid-May. The team will also retain Taylor Stein (NWMS ’24), who will lead the University of Nebraska–Lincoln project this fall, and Dillon Davis (NWMS ’24), who will step into a hybrid role as Growth Communications Specialist, overseeing marketing and communications for expansion initiatives.

With a strong team in place, Phi Sigma Kappa is preparing for an ambitious fall, executing two simultaneous expansion projects at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (Sigma Deuteron) and University of California, Santa Barbara (Kappa Pentaton).

Serving a Cause Bigger Than Sports Alpha’s commitment to service was on full display at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where brothers recently hosted their inaugural Amherst Pickleball Tournament in support of the #BiggerThanSports initiative.

What began as a new idea quickly turned into a standout event.

In partnership with the UMass chapter, the tournament brought together hundreds of students, supporters, and community members for a day centered on competition, connection, and purpose.

The impact extended far beyond the court. Through the energy and dedication of everyone involved, the event raised over $5,000 to support Bigger Than Sports, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting educational inequality through the power of sports. The organization provides student-athletes in underserved communities with

educational resources and guidance during their final year of high school. This event was a powerful example of how something can create meaningful change when driven by a shared mission.

Beyond fundraising, the tournament fostered a strong sense of community. Participants from across campus came together, reinforcing the idea that philanthropy can unite people in ways that go beyond traditional service efforts.

For the brothers who organized the event, the success of the inaugural tournament sets the stage for what is to come.

With strong participation and a clear purpose, there is already momentum building for future events and continued support of the #BiggerThanSports cause.

Pushing Past the Limit Omega Septaton Brother Obie Powell Discusses his Ultramarathon Experience.

What inspired you to take on an ultramarathon?

I was originally training for a marathon, but I wanted a bigger challenge. One of the brothers and I decided a 50K would push us more and be something we could take on together.

What did your training look like leading up to the race?

I was running three to four times a week, mixing speed work with long runs and shorter recovery days. I also spent a lot of time on stretching and stability work to prevent injury. One thing I wasn’t fully prepared for was the fueling. Running 20+ miles after class requires a lot of food and hydration. I knew that going in, but I didn’t really acknowledge it until I was doing it.

Walk me through race day — what do you remember most?

Honestly, I remember being frustrated. The race advertised 3,200 feet of elevation gain, but it ended up being closer to 5,500. That became obvious pretty quickly, and it was a lot more than I had prepared for.

I also spent a lot of time in my own head. There were stretches where I wouldn’t see anyone for up to an hour, especially later in the race. I kept trying to justify dropping out — I really wanted to quit. But at the same time, every mile I felt proud of myself for going farther than I thought I could. I knew I couldn’t go home and tell everyone I didn’t finish.

What did completing an ultramarathon teach you about yourself?

The race sucked, and pretty early on I wasn’t sure I could finish.

The pain didn’t go away, but I didn’t stop. It showed me how capable I am of anything I put my mind to. It taught me to keep pushing through, because finishing is worth it.

Did any brothers support you during training or on race day? Do you see any parallels between brotherhood and endurance sports?

During training, a lot of the brothers were really excited for me and offered a lot of support. It ended up inspiring more guys to start running and train for a half marathon, which was a really cool experience for the chapter. We were able to come together, train, and share the struggles.

The parallels between endurance sports and brotherhood are endless. The support you need to do something like this is huge and having that kind of backing shows you you’re not alone. There’s a quote people use in endurance sports: “Under pressure, you don’t rise to the occasion — you sink to the level of your training.” That was true physically, but also mentally. I leaned on the support of my brothers to get through the hardest parts.

Painting with Purpose: Paint Sigma Fenca Raises Support for Special Olympics Earlier this year, the brothers of Eta Septaton (Cal Poly) hosted their Paint Sigma Fenca event, bringing together students from across campus for a day centered on creativity, community, and giving back. The event raised over $700 in support of the Special Olympics, turning a simple idea into a meaningful impact.

The event welcomed participation from several campus organizations, including Alpha Chi Omega, Chi Omega, Alpha Omicron Pi, Kappa Alpha Theta, Delta Gamma, and Gamma Phi Beta. Their presence helped create an energetic and collaborative atmosphere, as students gathered to paint, connect, and support a shared cause.

Paint Sigma Fenca showcased the power of campus partnerships and what can be accomplished when organizations come together with a common goal. From brushes hitting canvases to donations being made, every part of the event contributed to something bigger than the day itself.

Most importantly, the event highlighted Phi Sigma Kappa’s commitment to service and making a difference beyond their chapter. Thanks to the generosity of everyone who donated, participated, and supported the event!

How our Cardinal Principles can save lives

By Dennis Gillan, Delta 1985 – and Chris Schrimscher Men account for 80% of all suicides — nearly 50,000 lives lost annually in the U.S. But here’s the good news: suicide rates among 15-24 year olds are decreasing, proving that early intervention works. As Phi Sigs, we have the power to be part of that solution by applying our Cardinal Principles in a new way.

Brotherhood, Scholarship and Character. BSC and remembering these three letters can save a life. HERE IS HOW:

B = Be Aware Brotherhood teaches us about harmony — so notice when a brother is out of harmony. Trust your gut when something feels off. Watch for brothers who are: • Talking about wanting to die, feeling like a burden, or expressing great guilt • Feeling empty, hopeless, trapped, or experiencing unbearable pain

• Changing behavior by withdrawing from friends, giving away possessions, taking dangerous risks, or using substances more frequently

Pay special attention during vulnerable times: breakups, academic struggles, legal troubles, family problems, or any form of hazing.

At one IFC event, a brother recognized these signs in himself and spoke up — 15 brothers immediately surrounded him with support. That’s true brotherhood in action.

S = Stay There Just like CPR keeps someone alive until paramedics arrive, your job is to stay close until professional help arrives. You don’t need to be a psychology major — you just need to be present.

One group of brothers told me how they set up an air mattress to stay overnight with a struggling brother, then helped walk him to counseling the next morning. They quite possibly saved a life that night.

Remember: helping a brother through mental health distress isn’t a one-man operation. Recruit other brothers to help — that’s what brotherhood is for.

for Mental Health: A Brother’s Guide to Suicide Prevention

C = Coordinate Care This might be as simple as walking a brother to the counseling center, or it might require involving chapter leadership, university officials, and family. It could get messy and feelings might get hurt, but saving a life is always worth it.

Make mental health a regular part of chapter meetings. Designate a mental health champion who stays current on campus resources and events. When everyone knows how to help, everyone can intervene.

THE BOTTOM LINE: As Friedrich Nietzsche said, “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” Our why is simple — we don’t leave brothers behind. Life hits us all hard, and that’s exactly when I’m most grateful for the brotherhood that is Phi Sigma Kappa.

Day of Giving 2026 Recap On March 13, Phi Sigma Kappa celebrated its 9th Annual Day of Giving. This annual initiative continues to showcase the strength, generosity, and commitment of our Brotherhood. Each year, brothers and supporters from across the country come together with a shared goal to invest in the future of Phi Sigma Kappa and the experiences that define it.

This year, 637 brothers and supporters stepped forward to make an impact, contributing a total of $220,434. This marks the fifth highest fundraising total in Day of Giving history and the second highest number of donors since the initiative began. While the all-time donor record of 749, set in 2024, still stands, this year’s participation shows that engagement remains strong and continues to grow.

Behind these numbers is something more important. Real and lasting impact. Contributions from Day of Giving directly support the programs and opportunities that shape the undergraduate experience. This includes leadership development through Shonk Leadership School and Officer Academy, along with scholarships and grants that help remove financial barriers for brothers in need.

These resources ensure that more members have access to the tools, education, and experiences that define Phi Sigma Kappa.

Day of Giving is not just about fundraising. It reflects what it means to be part of this Brotherhood. It highlights a shared

belief in supporting one another and investing in something larger than us. Whether it is a recent graduate making their first gift, a long-time alumnus continuing a tradition of giving, or a supporter contributing for the first time, each gift plays a role in strengthening the Fraternity.

The continued success of this initiative speaks to the pride our members have in Phi Sigma Kappa. It is a reminder that the values we promote, Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Character, extend well beyond the undergraduate years. They show up in moments like this, when brothers come together to support the next generation.

Xi Deuteron Rechartered: A Brotherhood Rebuilt Last year was a meaningful milestone for Phi Sigma Kappa, as the Xi Deuteron chapter at the University of Tennessee– Knoxville, officially celebrated its rechartering. The event brought together undergraduate brothers and dedicated alumni, all united in recognition of the chapter’s renewed commitment to Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Character.

The presence of alumni served as a powerful reminder that Phi Sigma Kappa is more than a college experience; it is a lifelong bond. Their continued support and involvement played a key role in helping guide Xi Deuteron back to this moment, reinforcing the strength of the brotherhood across generations.

A special highlight of the day was the attendance of Grand President David Cohen (Union ’88), whose leadership and commitment helped make the rechartering possible. Cohen was also joined by Grand Council Director, Mark Rowland (Ball State ’78), and Chancellor of the Court of Honor, Jim Schmitz (UC/Santa Barbara ’80). Their attendance underscored the importance of this achievement, not only for the chapter, but for the Fraternity as a whole.

Turning Tragedy into Purpose Jackson Bebiak grew up in a full, busy household, surrounded by his siblings Larissa, Ashton, his twin brother Chase, and Brooks, along with his dad, Alex, and stepmom, Ali. It was a home filled with energy and movement, but always grounded in connection. No matter where life pulled them, they always came back to one another.

Jackson was 19 years old and beginning to carve out his future as a freshman at Valdosta State University. He was a proud member of the Psi Septaton Chapter, where he found a strong sense of brotherhood and belonging.

On February 10, 2023, everything changed.

After receiving a call from friends that Jackson had been in a car accident, the family immediately got in the car and started driving to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. The details were limited, as the doctors could not share many details over the phone, and the uncertainty was overwhelming. When they arrived, they were brought into Jackson’s room, where he lay unresponsive and on life support. In that moment, the reality of the situation set in.

On February 13, Jackson was able to give back before being taken off life support. As an organ donor, he saved three lives of strangers, continuing a legacy of generosity that had already been important to his family. Even through this loss, there was a positive impact.

In the days that followed, the Bebiak family searched for answers.

When they were finally able to see the vehicle where Jackson was a passenger, one detail stood out: the tires were completely worn.

What they later learned was that the accident had been caused by hydroplaning, made worse by low tire tread, something preventable, but often overlooked.

For Alex, that realization became a turning point.

“I kept asking myself, how do I make a difference with Jackson’s story?” he said.

As he began researching tire safety, he found a surprising gap in awareness. Even conversations with law enforcement confirmed it was a common issue. That gap became an opportunity to act.

From that moment, the Road Ready Foundation was created, built on a simple but powerful message: tread wisely.

The Road Ready Foundation What started as one father’s response to tragedy has grown into something much larger. Today, the Foundation is recognized as an official National Safety Priority Program with the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. It has partnered with the Georgia Department of Transportation to create public service announcements and has visited schools across the state, educating students on tire safety and responsible driving.

The mission has even reached a national level. The Foundation has connected with leaders in Washington, D.C., including members of Congress, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Safety Council, and the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association. What began as a personal mission has become a growing movement to prevent future tragedies.

At its core, the Road Ready Foundation is focused on awareness and education. Through its work, drivers are encouraged to pay attention to oftenoverlooked details like tire condition and roadside preparedness. These small decisions can make a significant difference in keeping people safe.

That mission is also being carried forward through unique partnerships, including with professional NASCAR driver Wesley Slimp.

driving habits, the Foundation can reach younger audiences and reinforce a simple truth: tire safety matters for everyone.

While the Foundation continues to grow, Jackson is remembered not only for the impact of his story, but for who he was.

“Jackson was a beautiful boy,” Alex said. “He loved cars, anime, video games, and his friends to name a few. He was such a hard worker.”

At just 16 years old, Jackson bought his dream car, a 2007 Infiniti G37. It was loud, bold, and perfectly matched his personality. He approached life with energy and enthusiasm, always moving forward.

Losing a child means losing the future you imagined for them. It creates a space that cannot be filled. But through the Road Ready Foundation, Jackson’s story continues to create an impact.

“The silver lining is being able to share his story and help others,” Alex said.

How Psi Septaton is carrying on Jackson’s Legacy That impact is also being carried forward by his Psi Septaton Brothers.

For the past two summers, the chapter has hosted fundraisers in Jackson’s honor, bringing together brothers, friends, and family at Atlanta Braves games to support the Road Ready Foundation. These events have become a meaningful way to celebrate Jackson’s life, while contributing to a cause that reflects his legacy.

More recently, the chapter partnered directly with the Foundation on campus at Valdosta State University. Through tabling efforts, brothers helped raise awareness about tire safety and responsible driving, while also raising funds to support the Foundation’s mission.

These efforts reflect the strength of the brotherhood Jackson was a part of. His impact did not end with his time in the chapter. It continues through the actions of those who knew him and carry his memory forward.

In this way, Jackson’s legacy is not defined solely by loss, but by what has come from it.

Through education, awareness, and the continued support of his family and brothers, his story is helping protect others on the road.

And in that, his impact lives on.

A Legacy Secured for the Future

By Jon Serf The 2026 Officers Academy was more than a weekend of education, connection, and true brotherhood; it was a celebration of growth. On the final night, every brother in attendance took part in a monumental moment for the Phi Deuteron Chapter at the University of Kentucky and its Chapter Education Fund.

For many years, the Alumni Brothers of Phi Deuteron have supported their undergraduate chapter in countless ways. From being there physically to providing support financially, one of their most enduring contributions was the creation of their Chapter Education Fund with a goal to help undergraduates develop into the next leaders of their campus, community, and country. On January 10, that legacy reached an important milestone when the fund was officially placed under the umbrella of the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation.

Brother Dave Spreitzer reflected on the decision, stating, “Moving forward with allowing the Foundation to take care of our fund was an incredible opportunity for Phi Deuteron to renew and expand what we have built and developed since 1947. With the growth of the Foundation over the past 10 to 15 years, and aligning our fund with that growth, it was an absolute no-brainer.”

Established as well in the 1940’s, the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation has remained in continual operation and serves as the financial backbone of the Fraternity. In addition to supporting scholarships and leadership initiatives, the Foundation oversees numerous chapter education funds across our Chapter Network. These funds are designed to ease the financial burden placed on our undergraduate members, allowing them to focus on personal development and strengthening their chapter for the future.

“Having the Foundation monitor our money and ensure all legal requirements are kept up to date is a major asset to us,” Brother Spreitzer continued. “Any Phi Deuteron brother can now send a check or contact Headquarters with a donation, confident that their support will be properly managed and maintained. I would strongly encourage any other chapters with similar funds to explore this opportunity and allow the Foundation to work for them and with them.”

This transition represents more than a structural change; it is a reaffirmation of Phi Deuteron’s long-standing commitment to leadership, education, and brotherhood. By aligning with the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation, their Chapter Education Fund is positioned to continue supporting generations of brothers, ensuring that the legacy they built remains strong, secure, and forward-focused for years to come.

RIT Greek End

By Brother Dale Rucker (RIT ’90) Rochester, New York Brothers David Gysin (Class of 1994) and Dale Rucker (Class of 1990) from the Rochester Institute of Technology partnered with Alpha Sigma Alpha over the past two years to organize a full-scale Greek reunion for the RIT community.

The result — Greek End — was a tremendous success.

More than 400 Greek alumni, representing 15+ chapters, came together over the April weekend to reconnect with their Brothers and Sisters, as well as members from across the entire Greek system.

Alumni attendance spanned generations, with graduates dating back to the 1960s.

The camaraderie throughout the weekend was undeniable.

Greek End is expected to become a recurring event every couple of years, with participation likely to grow even further. Events like this highlight the lasting impact of the Greek system — an experience that helped many students stay engaged, build lifelong connections, and ultimately complete their degrees.

It was a fantastic weekend for everyone involved — but what made it especially meaningful was that it was brought to life by two proud Phi Sigma Kappa brothers.

The Phi Sigma Kappa chapter alone had approximately 40 brothers in attendance.

Towson’s 40th Anniversary

By Kevin Burns — Towson ’88 Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity, at Towson University, celebrated their 40th anniversary on December 6, 2025. The festivities began the day before Homecoming with an Alumni Golf Tournament, followed by a gathering at a local venue attended by roughly 100 Alumni, Active Members, and significant others.

Homecoming Day brought even more brothers together for tailgating and the football game, marking our 40th consecutive year at Towson. During a break in the game, we were honored with the opportunity to “Take the Field” and be recognized as the longest continuously active chapter at TU. Phi Sigma Kappa remains committed to fostering Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Character among its Members and within the community. College may be where fraternity life begins, but as our strong alumni network continues to prove, it truly becomes a lifelong brotherhood.

Exciting milestone involving Phi Sigma Kappa Brother Richard Alt, President & CEO of Ohiobased RIA Carnegie Investment Counsel On December 30th, Richard Alt and his team rang the Closing Bell at the New York Stock Exchange, commemorating over 50 years of growth for the firm. With roots dating back to 1974, Carnegie has grown to be an influential player in the RIA industry, now advising more than $7.5 billion in assets for individuals, families, nonprofits, and institutional clients nationwide.

As part of this celebration, Carnegie also announced a $100,000 charitable gift to the Malala Fund, supporting its mission to ensure every girl can learn and choose her own future.

Now, Principal & CEO Richard Alt and the rest of the Carnegie team are mapping a path for continued growth in 2026.

Alt is a proud member of Eta Hexaton at the University of Dayton.

Preserving Our Past, Inspiring Our Future Ten years — a decade. When you think in decades, you think of historical events. A lot has happened in the last decade, but for Phi Sigma Kappa, one of the most significant events was the establishment of the Shonk Archive and Educational Center.

During the Shonk Leadership School in 2016, Grand President Scott Jacobson (Cal Poly ’01) presented his concept for highlighting the Fraternity’s most cherished memorabilia and artifacts. A museum would be developed at the International Headquarters in Indianapolis and named for Albert D. Shonk, Jr. (Southern Cal ’54). The Shonk Archive and Educational Center would be created to preserve the Fraternity’s history and house its most precious artifacts.

In an article that appeared in the Signet in the fall of 2016, Brother Shonk noted that maintaining the Fraternity’s history has been a top priority since the creation of the Grand Chapter in 1878. The office of Historian was added to the Grand Council in 1879, and someone has served in the position since that time.

It was an elected position and part of the Grand Council until 1938, when it became an appointed position.

After six years of development, the Shonk Archive and Educational Center (SAEC) was officially opened during the Shonk Leadership School in July of 2022. Penwal Industries, a leader in design development and custom fabrication, made the vision come to life. Construction was done in partnership between the Grand Chapter, the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation, and Phi Sigma Kappa Properties.

The Archive is home to displays featuring the founding of both Phi Sigma Kappa and Phi Sigma Epsilon, famous Phi Sigs, brothers who made their names in the world of business, athletics, politics, etc.

The Archive is available for a virtual tour on YouTube — The Shonk Archive & Educational Center Walkthrough.

The SAEC is always willing to accept items from individual brothers and chapters that highlight the history of the Fraternity.

Notably, the Archive features jewelry from brothers. Items such as member pins, Signet rings, guards, lapel pins, etc. are displayed.

We have also received composite photos, party favors, blankets, wall hangings, etc.

It’s important to preserve the Fraternity’s most important history and traditions. They make up the DNA of who and what Phi Sigma Kappa is today. This will be space that will show those not forged in the bond of Brotherhood what we represent and why Phi Sigma Kappa is impactful.”
