PLANNED GIVING FOR PHI SIG
Through planned gifts, Phi Sig brothers can realize tax or financial advantages and can contribute meaningful one-time gifts. The Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation works closely with financial experts and attorneys to ensure that the wishes of donors and their families are fulfilled. Whether you would like to support Phi Sigma Kappa today or benefit your Fraternity after your lifetime, your personal financial planner and/or attorney specializing in estate planning should be able to accommodate your wishes as they pertain to Phi Sigma Kappa and the Foundation.
Donors making planned gifts to Phi Sigma Kappa through estate planning utilize: • Bequests • Life insurance policies • Retirement plan assets • Annuities
• Charitable IRAs
• Property and real estate • Stocks and securities
Bequests for Phi Sigma Kappa
Making a provision in your will for the Foundation is a simple process. You can leave a specific asset or amount, a percentage of your estate or the remainder of your estate after you have taken care of other beneficiaries. Also, you may leave your bequest unrestricted or designate it for a specific use. The appropriate wording for making a gift depends upon the type of gift, state law, and your own unique circumstances. The following will provision is an example of how you may designate your gift. Consult an attorney to be sure you have a properly drafted legal document.
I, [name], of [city, state, zip], give, devise, and bequeath [percentage of estate remainder, written amount, or description of property] to the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation.
For those wishing to make the Foundation aware of an existing planned gift, please contact Marsha Spears, Financial Specialist, at marsha@phisigmakappa.org.
Financial Planning
In addition to providing a bequest to Phi Sigma Kappa in your will, there are a variety of ways you can achieve substantial tax savings in your lifetime, as well as reduce or eliminate the taxes on your estate through effective financial planning.
Financial planning instruments, such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable lead trusts, can help ensure that your assets pass to those people, institutions and causes that mean the most to you. There is no single strategy that is right for everyone, so consult with your financial advisor and decide how your gift to the Fraternity through the Foundation also can satisfy your estate planning priorities. Once you’re ready, contact Executive Director Nick Zuniga at nick@phisigmakappa.org.

MCMASTER BEQUEST ESTABLISHES NEW SCHOLARSHIP
The large bequest received by the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation last year was for the benefit of the Alpha Deuteron Chapter at the University of Illinois. It created a new scholarship for chapter brothers who are “braves” and not “chiefs” and who have best supported the active chapter by attendance, dependability, and participation in chapter activities.
The Foundation received more than $406,000 from the estates of Alpha Deuteron alumnus Hugh R. McMaster (Illinois ’56), and his wife, Sylvia K. McMaster, to be added to the Alpha Deuteron Chapter Education Fund.
Hugh was a graduate of the College of Agriculture, was a lifelong farmer in Altona, Illinois, and died in 2007, with his wife passing in 2019.
“Hugh was a dedicated Phi Sig, a dedicated Illini, a dedicated Christian and a dedicated human being who loved young people,” said Brother Harold MooBerry (Illinois ’57). “Since he and Sylvia were never blessed with their own children, it is entirely in keeping with their character to make such a generous and thoughtful gift to benefit future generations of young men of Alpha Deuteron Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Illinois.”
The chapter’s Alumni Board will determine the number and amount of the scholarships and winning recipients and will award the grants each year at Homecoming. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good academic standing will be eligible for nomination by the Chapter President and Vice President.
