Can you assist in developing a Special Olympics philanthropy or take part in other campus service activities? Can you make sure our records are up to date with the campus fraternity/sorority life office and nudge your brothers to take part in more IFC activities and meetings?

If you are an alumnus, can you help make us better by lending support to a local chapter? Perhaps you have a resource, skill-set, or profession that can provide great wins for our chapters? Can you mentor a young man who is entering the workforce and needs to learn the lay of the land? Can you support the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation to ensure our educational programming reaches more men—undergraduates and alumni alike?

Letter From The Grand President Brothers, Greetings from Indianapolis!

Chris Hoye Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity Grand President

Since this is my first Signet article as your Grand President, I want to tell you I am humbled and honored to serve each of you. Thank you for your trust, confidence and belief in my capabilities to make Phi Sig better each day. I am thankful to serve and work with the committed, diverse, and highly-skilled members of your Grand Council, Foundation, and Properties boards; and our professional staff at headquarters who work tirelessly for our brothers.

We have 70 chapters and two colonies, with an overall undergraduate population of about 3,700, plus about 100,000 alumni brothers globally. Our website has been updated, and now has our annual budget and committee membership in the Governing Documents section for all to view. I have sent out a letter explaining our Liability Insurance Policy and methods on how to decrease this individual member premium each year.

We have launched the first of three program components of our new brotherhood program titled Cardinal Journey. This innovative and forward-thinking member development program focuses on building positive, healthy relationships from the moment a brother associates with the Fraternity and ends during his final year. Please know we have placed a lot of talent into developing this program and I believe this will change Phi Sig, and the Greek world, for the better.

Additionally, we are in the process of remodeling your Headquarters building in Indianapolis. The funds for this came from generous alumni and friends’ donations, and we are thankful and proud of this outpouring of support. We are also investigating using electronic voting for future meetings, we are implementing an investment committee for Phi Sig funds, and we are hiring additional staff members to help build better programming and offer our brothers a better membership experience.

This summer at the 67th General Convention I shared four strategic initiatives for our Fraternity looking forward: 1.

Continue Phi Sig Forward, the four-component investment plan of personal and professional development for our brothers. The components are Member Development; Alumni Mentorship; Growth, Funding and Development; and Safe Environments. This plan can be viewed on our website and I encourage you to review it with your chapter monthly.

2. Continued undergraduate, alumni and three-board educational programming and training. This goal focuses on training our

leadership on topics such as mental and physical health, sexual harassment, professional development, and financial management of our Fraternity.

3. Drive improved alumni development and engagement by providing support and a superior volunteer experience.

4. Re-examine how we deliver information to our members; assess how our current events and systems are working; and determine how can we further target improvements to maximize our undergraduate dollars.

In mid-August, I attended the funeral of Brother Todd Binkley (Tennessee ’87), where many brothers were in attendance. This was a somber moment, and I am proud to tell you his wife Susan was very appreciative of Phi Sigma Kappa.

She shared with me Brother Todd’s great love of our Fraternity. As brothers, we should strive to represent Phi Sigma Kappa at these events as we owe this to our fellow Phi Sigs.

Brothers, I leave you with a few reflections and challenges. Be yourself, be humble, be respectful and always put the Grand Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa first. We are all brothers of the Grand Chapter and not just our local chapter.

We all must work together to make Her better, make Her stronger, and make Her proud of you as a member. You may think “I am only one Brother. What can I do to make Phi Sig better?” Each one of you has the capability to make our Fraternity stronger by your words, your actions, and by living our ritual teachings each day. For some, it may be through volunteering on a chapter level or in another campus or civic association. For others, it may through donating your time in mentoring our brothers and teaching them a skill set you have developed. It may be through a generous donation to the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation as an investment in another brother. Whatever your choice, be proud of it and know it is appreciated by the brotherhood.

Thank you for your time and talent, whatever it may be, and committing to make Phi Sig better each day.

THANK YOU, BROTHER SEAN SHINGLER! Brother Sean Shingler’s (George Mason ’97) term as Grand President came to a close at the 67th General Convention in Dallas. He will enter a new role as the Chancellor of the Court of Honor.

Shingler made a profound impact on Phi Sig throughout his biennium, starting with the introduction of the Phi Sig Forward strategic plan. Phi Sig Forward established a vision for the immediate future of our Fraternity and gathered ideas from more than 700 undergraduates and the Fraternity’s staff and boards.

During his term, he also helped Phi Sig usher in its new brand. Phi Sig got a new look in 2017 with updated logos, a polished website, and fresh publications.

Shingler was at the forefront of the new organizational design effort, which integrated the Fraternity’s staff, Grand Council, Foundation and Properties board. The new structure enables all facets of the fraternity to work together and establish clear goals and expectations between all governing boards and create a unified vision for the future of our Fraternity.

Perhaps one of the most impressive feats of Shingler’s term as Grand President is the consistent growth the Fraternity experienced under his leadership. Over the last five years, Phi Sig’s number of associates has increased by 10 percent and the number of initiates has increased by 12 percent.

“Sean’s leadership during my first two years was extremely meaningful,” COO Nick Zuniga (Ball State AI) said. “He brought innovative ideas and concepts to Phi Sig, which will be felt for decades. I consider him a mentor and friend for life.”

The Fraternity will always be grateful for Chancellor Shingler’s hard work and dedication. His contributions to the Fraternity are widespread and will impact our brothers for years to come.

INTRODUCING YOUR NEW GRAND PRESIDENT AND GRAND COUNCIL DIRECTORS GRAND PRESIDENT CHRIS HOYE (FERRIS STATE ‘91) Chris Hoye (Ferris State ’91) was elected Grand President of Phi Sigma Kappa July. Hoye served as a Grand Council Director for eight years, where he served as chairman of the Constitution and Bylaws committee and the Technology committee. In addition to his national volunteer experience, Hoye served on Ferris State’s alumni board as President, Secretary, and Treasurer. He was also the District Governor for the Michigan chapters in the early 2000s. Professionally, the Sigma Epsilon alumnus works in the plastics industry as a senior account manager. He has worked in the plastics industry for more than 20 years.

GRAND COUNCIL DIRECTOR DAVID L. COHEN (UNION ‘88) David L. Cohen (Union ’88) enters his first term as a Grand Council Director after having several roles in the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation since 1995. He served as President of the Foundation from 2003-2008, before transitioning into a role as a Trustee in 2011. Since 2016, he has been a Trustee Emeritus. Cohen is also the first brother who was awarded a chair in the Order of the Diamond Circle and a Medallion of Merit recipient. Professionally, Cohen has a variety of law experience over his 25-year career. He currently works for RBC Capital Markets as the senior legal counsel.

GRAND COUNCIL DIRECTOR JEFF LIESENDAHL (NORTHERN ILLINOIS ‘89) Jeff Liesendahl (Northern Illinois ’87) will serve on the Grand Council for the first time. Liesendahl was a board member, Treasurer and First Vice President of the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation. The Northern Illinois graduate has been a Licensed CPA for more than 30 years and is currently a managing partner at Island Peak Capital in Washington D.C.

GRAND COUNCIL DIRECTOR SEAN MCGREEVEY (HENDERSON STATE ‘97) Sean McGreevey (Henderson State ’97) is entering his second term as a Grand Council Director. McGreevey has worked in higher education for 20 years with stops at the University of South Carolina, Young Harris College, and Chatham University. He currently serves as Dean of Students at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky. While he was working at the University of South Carolina, he was the Chapter Adviser for the Gamma Triton Chapter and was awarded Chapter Adviser of the Year six years in a row. Prior to working in higher education, McGreevey worked at International Headquarters as the Director of Member Services.

A NEW ERA IN PHI SIGMA KAPPA

Cardinal Journey is Phi Sigma Kappa’s new comprehensive member development program that begins when brothers join the Fraternity and ends during the final year of their undergraduate experience.

The concept for the program began in Charlotte, North Carolina during a weekend-long retreat including brothers, staff and Fraternity partners to make important decisions regarding the direction of the Fraternity’s education efforts. Discussions were held in previous years of re-vamping Passages, Phi Sig’s previous associate member education program, but the Education Committee was looking for something that would extend beyond associate members.

The retreat was planned in partnership with Dyad Strategies, a fraternity and sorority research and consulting firm. Dr. Gentry McCreary, CEO of Dyad Strategies facilitated discussions about what are the core values of Phi Sig, what the committee wanted undergraduate members to learn during their experience, and what direction they saw Phi Sigma Kappa headed in the future.

The Education Committee at the time included two Grand Council Directors, Sean McGreevey (Henderson State ’97) and Darald Stubbs (Stetson ‘84), two International Headquarters professional staff members, Nick Zuniga (Ball State AI), Executive Director/COO and Grant Carpenter (Northern Arizona ‘13), Director of Chapter Services and several alumni volunteers: D. Matt Gregory (Southern Illinois ‘95), Ed Kovacs (Bowling Green ’00), Jeff Liesendahl (Northern Illinois ’87), Christian Williams (Florida International ’12), and Rich Loeffler (Clemson ’11).

Two major ideas came out of the retreat: a three-year member development program that would focus on relationship-building and creating a sense of belonging within chapters, and the hiring of a new staff person to develop the program. The Education department at International Headquarters was created and Leslie J. Pedigo was hired to be the Director of Education in May 2018.

Throughout the following academic year, Pedigo developed and piloted the new associate member program with several local chapters across the country. The local chapters who participated in the pilot phase included Nu Tetarton (Rutgers), Eta Septaton (Cal Poly), Gamma Triton (South Carolina), Kappa

Tetarton (Southern Illinois), Epsilon Octaton (Cincinnati), Epsilon Tau (Ball State), Alpha Deuteron (Illinois), and Delta (West Virginia). These groups put forth time and energy to implement the pilot program and provide feedback to International Headquarters professional staff. After a year of piloting, the Education Committee was excited to announce the program, now entitled, Cardinal Journey at the 67th General Convention. Following the original plan, Cardinal Journey includes three phases: Brotherhood in Phi Sigma Kappa, Scholarship in Phi Sigma Kappa and Character in Phi Sigma Kappa.

The goal of the Brotherhood in Phi Sigma Kappa program is to integrate associate members into the chapter’s brotherhood through a focus on personal growth, genuine conversation and an exploration of individual and organizational values. This is achieved by educating associate members on the purpose and history of the Fraternity and discussing important topics and life skills relevant to college men. The program includes associate member meetings led by the chapter’s Inductor as well as informal opportunities for connection, such as an associate member retreat and group Good Samaritan service project. Upon conclusion of the program, associate members should feel confident as brothers of the Fraternity, leaders on their campus, and members of society.

The focus of Brotherhood in Phi Sigma Kappa is building a sense of belonging and is based out of research from Dyad Strategies. Their findings narrowed down four areas of brotherhood within men’s fraternities: solidarity, shared social experience, sense of belonging and accountability. Focusing on a sense of belonging has proven to improve a chapter’s overall sense of brotherhood and connection with each other as well as their commitment to the organization as a whole.

During the pilot phase, the Grand Chapter partnered with Dyad Strategies to survey and assess the pilot chapters compared to similar-sized chapters. The data showed that pilot chapters had lowered their focus on solidarity and shared social experience, both which suggest the program helped emphasized the values of Phi Sig and decreased their focus on social events and forcing associate members to bond. Through continued assessment efforts, the Grand Chapter hopes to evaluate the effectiveness of Brotherhood in Phi Sigma Kappa on a larger scale and begin to make data-driven decisions in preparation for the next two phases of Cardinal Journey.

Focused on understanding and utilizing strengths, initiated brothers during their second year in the chapter will participate in Scholarship in Phi Sigma Kappa and complete the CliftonStrengths™ assessment to become more self-aware and apply their skills to academics and leadership roles within and outside of Phi Sigma Kappa. This program is currently being piloted and will launch at the 2020 Shonk Undergraduate Leadership School in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Character in Phi Sigma Kappa will be a series of modules focusing on transitioning juniors and seniors into postcollege and alumnus life. Modules will focus on financial literacy, professionalism, mental and physical wellness, and building and maintaining relationships. The Education Committee and International Headquarters professional staff are excited to begin the development and pilot process of this program in the academic year of 2021-2022.

These exciting new programs have come with latent benefits of better relations between local chapters and the Grand Chapter, an increased amount and higher quality resources for Executive Board officers and stronger engagement with alumni. The Grand Chapter hopes to continue these efforts in providing high-quality educational programs for undergraduate and alumni brothers, as well as helping local chapters focus on what really matters—a sense of brotherhood.

2019 CHAPTER AWARD WINNERS Chapters were honored for their accomplishments at the 67th General Convention Herbert Brown Outstanding Chapter Phi Deuteron, University of Kentucky

Phi Deuteron exemplified excellence throughout their chapter, starting with their recruitment process. The chapter required potential associate members to have at least a 3.0 GPA. As a result, their most recent associate member class averaged a 3.2 GPA. Philanthropically, the group raised more than $20,000.

Pi Tetarton emphasized our Cardinal Principals throughout the 2018-19 school year. Brothers hosted weekly brotherhood events, values workshops, and three successful philanthropies.

In addition, brothers are required to perform 50 hours of community service.

Fred Schwengel Most Improved Chapter Phi Upsilon, Valparaiso University

Phi Upsilon improved vastly throughout the year. The brothers retained 92 percent of their members and increased their presence in the community by hosting four philanthropy events and raising $40,000 for Special Olympics through their Polar Plunge.

FROM THE DESK OF THE FOUNDATION: SETTING THE STAGE FOR THE FUTURE Most of the 60,000 brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa are not aware of the important role the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation plays each year in making Phi Sig a leading national fraternity with fresh, dynamic, relevant educational programming for its undergraduates and volunteers. Nor do they consider that our national peer organizations have educational foundations dedicated to providing funding to their related fraternity while expanding endowments to provide further revenues for additional educational grants and scholarships. The word “Foundation” is appropriate for these organizations as they provide a bedrock of financial stability and dedicated leadership to the fraternities they support.

Like all fraternity foundations, our Foundation begins each year with a planned annual fundraising campaign to support a budgeted set of educational grants and awards, as well as its operating expenses. This year the annual campaign is driving to raise roughly $350,000 in unrestricted support for the Fraternity and its educational programs. $350,000 may look like it would be an easy number to achieve for an organization with 60,000 members, but it turns out to be quite a challenge. Printed communication is expensive with the Fraternity and Foundation only able to afford to send printed Signets and written updates to about 15% of the members each year, and email is limited by the number of good email addresses, roughly 25%. Further, and understandably, not all members share an equal passion for our Fraternity and the vital role it plays in making better men for society. That is why it needs to be stressed to all those that have the capability of supporting Phi Sig annually to please do what you can each year.

While the Foundation runs its annual program to remains viable, it works to build its endowment. One day its investment earnings will also make meaningful contributions to expanded educational grants and awards for the Fraternity.

Whether it be $50, $250, $1,000 or $25,000, the annual gifts received by the Foundation from an elite group of brothers are vital to Phi Sig’s longevity. Through their generosity, these brothers demonstrate their commitment to the Fraternity’s purposes and ideals.

The Foundation stays engaged with distinguished supporters on funding of major programs through capital campaigns and other planned giving that can take Phi Sigma Kappa to the next level for our undergraduate and alumni members. The Albert D. Shonk Archives and Educational Center capital campaign is a recent example of such an effort. The capital campaign to build a new chapter house at Purdue University is another.

When you see that next direct mail update, or get a call from a staff member, Foundation trustee or other volunteer, please provide your annual support to the best of your ability.

We Phi Sigs are in this thing together, to maintain a high standard for our Fraternity and to see it reach new heights in the future. The undergraduate brothers who are the responsibility of the Grand Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa are counting on us. The future of our Brotherhood depends on us.

The American University Chapter added 13 new members last spring and they have been incorporated into the chapter and Greek community. The chapter did not participate in fall rush this year. Last spring, the chapter was awarded two Fraternity and Sorority Life awards from The American University FSL office. The first award was for the chapter’s philanthropic efforts, as the chapter was able to raise over $7,000 combined between both of their philanthropy events. The second award was for the chapter’s alumni network and relations, as they were able to show, through their countless alumni events, including their yearly founders day, that they demonstrated well-connected and strong alumni relations among the active chapter. Currently, the chapter is planning their fall philanthropy, fourth Annual Pete Sauer Bowl, a flag football event in honor of former veteran and Phi Sigma Kappa brother Pete Sauer. All proceeds go to Homes For Our Troops. Lastly, the chapter’s oldest alumni, Dick Taylor, is still going strong, even through his recent injuries, hospitalization, and atmosphere change from his home to a retirement home.

During the summer, Brother Justin Rivera attended the Zillgitt Leadership Institute, bringing valuable knowledge back to Adelphi, and brothers Paul Affrunti, Santino Testani, and Steven Hernandez accepted a Presidential Achievement Award for Philanthropy at the 67th General Convention. This fall, the Brothers of Phi Septaton hit the ground running with Brother Jesse Day serving as IFC President, and Brother Matt Bustruc serving as Senior Class President, making Phi Septaton’s presence well known throughout both the Greek Community and Student Body at Adelphi.

Phi Septaton’s Executive Board has been working hard to streamline Chapter meetings and polish up their Chapter’s Constitution and Bylaws; they welcomed Grand Council Members Jonathan Taylor and David Cohen at one of their improved chapter meetings to discuss Phi Septaton’s goals and the most efficient way to achieve them. Phi Septaton has added four new members to their roster this fall.

They have upcoming philanthropy events supporting the Sharsheret Breast Cancer Organization, the Special Olympics, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The beginning of the year has been a success for the chapter at Clemson, from recruitment to philanthropy to everything in between. Their recruitment chair, Nick Dibella, created a solid plan that the chapter executed well. They had 18 bids accepted in their fall class. In the community, they have two separate highway cleanups planned for this semester on one of the most utilized roads in their area. With the organization of community service chair, Connor Chepul, many members lent a hand to other community organizations such as the Arts Center of Clemson, Helping Hands of Clemson, and Order of Omega.

Their philanthropy chair, Ryan Reed, has already planned a philanthropy ‘Closest to the Pin Golf Contest’ to raise money for South Carolina Special Olympics in late October. He also organized a proceeds night at Chipotle where over $100 was raised for Helping Hands of Clemson. In addition, they have contributed to other Greek philanthropies in Clemson such as ZTA Big Man, AXO Walk a Mile, and ADPi Pi Spike. The Clemson Chapter had an alumni cocktail giyr during the weekend of the Texas A&M home game. Many alumni were able to attend and had a great time in the backyard of their main house.

Their house also improved drastically with the help of home improvement chair, Will Gioffre, who coordinated the renovation of both the exterior and interior of their house. Homecoming week is around the corner for Clemson University where they will compete to win the “float” building competition amongst many other greek and non-greek organizations.

This semester, the Fairleigh Dickinson Chapter is adding one new member into the brotherhood. Weekly education meetings are held for him. On October 10, Brother Ren Ruiz sat on a panel of members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies as part of a campus event to break stereotypes surrounding Greek life and extreme heteronormativity.

Furthermore, their fall philanthropy event, a 24 hour Softball Marathon, which is one of the biggest philanthropy events on FDU’s campus, took place from noon on October 26 until noon on October 27. The proceeds from the Softball Marathon go towards a local organization for kids that have or have had cancer by the name of Camp Happy Times. They appear to have a great turnout this year, with many other Greek organizations and other clubs on campus signing up for hour timeslots.

The Georgia Tech Chapter has been busy with school, intramurals, socials, philanthropy, and initiating their 18 associates. With the recent initiation of their new brothers, their chapter is 80 brothers strong. Academically, they have brothers studying 18 different majors across all of the university’s colleges and are extremely proud of their 3.43 average GPA (compared to the university’s undergraduate average GPA of 3.33). They are also proud of the fact that as a chapter at a large, public school in Georgia, about 40% of their chapter are from out-of-state and 15% are international students.

They have been involved in intramural leagues fielding teams for ultimate frisbee, cornhole, and flag football in the first half of the semester, and have teams competing in soccer, volleyball, and dodgeball in the second half the semester. Looking forward, they have two large events coming up: Carving for a Cause and Homecoming. Carving for a Cause is our fall philanthropy event where we invite members of the Georgia Tech community to buy a pumpkin and provide carving equipment so they can make a jack-o-lantern with all the proceeds going to charity. Homecoming comes up soon after, where they get to invite chapter alumni into town for our fall semiformal, as well as Georgia Tech’s homecoming game. They are excited for our upcoming events and to finish the rest of the semester as strong as they have started it.

The colony at Henderson State University has added three new members this fall semester. The colony has enjoyed heightened alumni engagement this semester with the creation of an Alumni Association and ongoing recruitment to fill an Advisory Board, both of which will further support the development of the group. They are Damn Proud to have raised a proportionally larger amount of money for the Gahanna Special Olympics this year than in the prior. The brothers won an award for “Most Outstanding Greek Program” from the Ohio State Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life for their “Ally to Women” program, which aimed to promote the safety and security of female guests at their events and all around campus. The Stevens Chapter is happy to welcome 20 new members to their brotherhood as well as the larger Greek community. A handful of their youngest members have already stepped up to take leadership roles throughout their own organization and on-campus councils and clubs.

Iota is constantly looking to improve and they have something to show for it. Over the summer and slightly into the school year, they have had many renovations done, including but not limited to, both their second and third floor bathrooms renovated as well as a new exhaust hood installed in their kitchen. Philanthropy efforts are higher than ever this semester as they just finished their first ever Hoboken wide clothing drive. Additionally, as this time of year rolls around, the brothers are in full-swing planning their annual Phi Sig Scare-house philanthropy event where they turn every room in the house into a spooky setting to scare willing adventurers.

The Cincinnati Chapter has had a busy semester this fall. After chartering just over two years ago, they have moved into our first house on Greek row.

This has been an exciting process that has given us a place to officially call home. In an effort to show pride in this new home and to help their neighbors understand our values, they coordinated and carried out a community service event to help clean up the streets around Greek row and the surrounding area. This included picking up and disposing of trash and recycling any items that they could to help the area be as clean as possible.

Brothers have also held various social events to greet their new neighbors as well as to break in our new home.

Aside from their new home, Epsilon Octaton recently held their first ever “Academic Achievement� dinner.

This Academic Achievement dinner was hosted for brothers that met rigorous GPA requirements and have showed continued efforts to stimulate their scholarship record. The chapter has also partnered with the Special Olympics of Kentucky for their annual Polar Plunge fundraiser. Their role in this new partnership has not only lead to new marketing efforts geared towards young adult participation, but has also lead to the event having an overall programming upgrade. This will include various sponsor run game and activity booths that will not only help raise more money for the Special Olympics, but also to make the event a more enjoyable and memorable time for the attendees.

This semester the Kentucky Chapter has hit the ground running with another successful fall recruitment led by recruitment chairs Ian Georges and Jack Morgan. They had 28 bids accepted in their fall class and are looking forward to implementing Cardinal Journey for the first time. Phi Deuteron is looking forward to another great year highlighted in the Fall by their homecoming celebration as well as their Polar Plunge event, in addition to their Founder’s Day at the Races event taking place in the Spring. The brothers of Phi Deuteron, as well as Chapter Adviser of the Year Greg Stack, are looking to carry forward their momentum from the previous year’s successes, having been recognized as the “Most Improved Chapter” by UK’s IFC as well as having been the only recipient of the “Herbert L. Brown Outstanding Chapter Award” at the 2019 General Convention in Dallas.

The UMass Chapter has expanded its brotherhood by adding sixteen associate members this fall. These new members are learning the key information about how to function as a unit and a brotherhood, while also attending various seminars explaining how to be a positive influence among the Greek and campus community. Over the summer, the parking lot was freshly paved and painted, and multiple new locks and doors were implemented about the house. A brand new fence was also put up in the back of the house with the help of multiple brothers. Alpha Chapter has been heavily involved with Philanthropy over the first months of the semester, with volunteering in the set up and fundraising for a memorial bike race in remembrance of a UMass Student. With two upcoming events with focus on March of Dimes and Special Olympics as the charities chosen respectively.

The brothers at the University of Michigan have been dedicated to community service from participating in the cleaning of the local park, hosting a can drive, and shoveling driveways in the neighborhood during the winter. The brothers have also been heavily involved in philanthropy events on campus. They attended sorority cookouts to help raise funds to fight arthritis, participating in the Michigan Mud Bowl tournament which raised money to be donated to Mott Children’s hospital, and enjoyed playing in the Delta Chi’s Marco Madness basketball tournament as well.

During Marco Madness they helped to raise money that was used to help fund cancer research and were able to play on the basketball court in the Crisler Center.

Planned philanthropy events of their own in the near future include a fundraiser at bd’s Mongolian Grill.

In the last semester, the Minnesota Chapter has proudly held 44 members with an associated class of 10 new members this fall and seven last spring.

Alumni have been active in the chapter participating in the Ohm Open over the summer as well as a Homecoming celebration this fall. Special thanks to Brother Russel Olmsted for his efforts in cooking over 20 turkeys for this celebration and congratulations to the active chapter for placing second overall in Homecoming as well as first in the Lip Sync competition. The active members have also continued their Woofles philanthropy and raised over $4000 for the Special Olympics this fall with another event and further proceeds upcoming this spring. A new academic focus program has been implemented this semester and the brothers took a weekend trip to Edgewood Resort for their Fall formal.

The South Carolina Chapter is now at 98 members after their most recent associate class. The associate class that was initiated had 27 members and they were initiated on October 20. Their chapter GPA is 3.37 which is over the IFC average of 3.20. They had 17% of our chapter obtain a 4.0 during the spring semester as well. Their new member GPA was 3.50 which was well above the IFC average of 3.13. Their major philanthropy events are in the Spring 2020 semester with Polar Plunge happening in February and Dance Marathon happening in March. Their goal is to raise $10,000 for Polar Plunge and $5,000 for Dance Marathon! This year has been off to a great start for the UWM Chapter! They started the semester with an awesome fall rush that resulted in a 17-person associate class. In the first 7 weeks of the semester they have already had a mixer with every sorority on our campus, most recently a pumpkin carving contest with AOII. In the near future they have a date night coming up at a riverfront venue that they are all excited for. This year they decided that we wanted to play an even larger part in their campus’ safety week and got over 250 people to vouch to report sexual assault by signing our board!

They participated in Packathon for the fraternity/sorority “Day of Caring” where they helped pack bags for runners in the Chicago Marathon. They also had Sam Markovich selected to the morale team for dance marathon, the school’s largest philanthropy event. The survey is part of the Fraternity’s partnership with Dyad Strategies, a fraternity and sorority-focused consulting firm specializing in applied research and assessment.

CALIFORNIA STATE / NORTHRIDGE EXPANSION UPDATE Phi Sigma Kappa has re-landed at California State University/Northridge (CSUN), and the alumni base could not be more excited to work together on bringing back traditions of excellence, and continue a long-standing legacy. After 10 years of being silent at CSUN, the Xi Pentaton Chapter is currently recolonizing and witnessing the acceptance of bids by a quality group of young men who are committing themselves to the devotion of our fraternal faith.

A plan of action to support eventual re-chartering was drafted after our August 3, 2019 meeting. A group of more than 30 Phi Sigma Kappa Xi Pentaton alumni came together, to re-connect and reaffirm their support to our alumni association and the undergraduate chapter. After a few hours of deliberation, the group of alumni hosted a brotherhood luncheon where everyone had a chance to reconnect and catch up on current life events.

The momentum of our gatherings led to planning a brotherhood outing and the group attended a CSUN night at Dodger Stadium on Saturday September 7, where more alumni came out to support our mission to reconnect as Phi Sigma Kappa brothers. A group of about 20 brothers had the chance to enjoy one of our past traditions by attending one of the best sporting events and cheering our Los Angeles Dodgers to a win. In the group of Alumni who attended, there were brothers in our chapter who traveled from Seattle Washington, San Diego, Long Beach and Los Angeles.

In the next few weeks, we plan on associating a select group of men who have shown interest in promoting the values of our fraternity and who want to be led by our alumni association in becoming a colony.

These devoted students will continue to build on that plan of action and pave the way for the official re-chartering of the Xi Pentaton Chapter. They are committed to representing Phi Sigma Kappa by being part of a strong Greek Community that ensures a positive image as community leaders.

MEDALLION OF MERIT WINNER:

FRAMROZE VIRJEE (SANTA BARBARA ‘82) Phi Sigma Kappa honored Framroze “Fram” Virjee (Santa Barbara ’82) with the Medallion of Merit, its highest honor, at the 67th General Convention in Dallas.

After a 30-year career in law, Brother Virjee has quickly climbed the ranks of higher education. In 2014, he served as executive vice chancellor, general counsel and secretary to the California State University Board of Trustees. In January 2018, he was appointed as the interim president of CSUF before becoming the permanent president in March of 2019.

“I am hugely humbled to win this award,” Brother Virjee said.

“Character is, in my view, the most important attribute a person can have. It’s developed over a long period of time. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to develop my character. Phi Sig was a huge part of that. In many ways, I feel like it was the beginning of creating that foundation for belief.”

Prior to his success professionally, Brother Virjee joined the Kappa Pentaton Chapter in 1979. He originally had no intention of joining a fraternity, but he was drawn to the values Phi Sigma Kappa was built on.

“As I came to the door, I met a couple of active brothers, including one who would become my big brother, Jim Schmitz,” he said. “I asked him why he joined the house and he said, ‘it helps me tell right from wrong, and it helps me know what I want to do with my life.’ I was 17. When you’re a 17-year-old kid, you usually don’t listen to those things. But when somebody just a couple years older than you is telling you that with the vigor and earnestness in which he was sharing it was effective.”

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS:

DAVID POILE (NORTHEASTERN ‘82) Brother David Poile (Northeastern ’71) was honored with Phi Sigma Kappa’s Distinguished Alumnus Award at the 67th General Convention.

As an undergraduate, Poile played for the Northeastern hockey team while he lived in the Delta Pentaton chapter house. He left the Huskies as the second leading scorer all-time, with 82 goals in three varsity seasons, while remaining an active brother in Phi Sig. “While most of the hockey players were living together in a dorm, I chose to have a little more diversity in my life and I was the only hockey player to join a fraternity,” Poile said. “As I look back on it, it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. It gave me everything I was looking for.”

Poile is currently entering his 22nd year as general manager of the NHL’s Nashville Predators after 13 years with the Washington Capitals. He is the winningest general manager in league history with 1,380 regular season victories and was named General Manager of the Year in 2017.

In mid-September, Phi Sigma Kappa’s professional staff packed up International Headquarters, put important items in storage, and handed the keys over to Penwal Architect to continue renovations.

With the staff moved out, demolition began on the building. As it stands, walls have been removed, the front desk area has been cleared,and carpet has been removed.

Refurbishments will continue in the coming months as staff will continue to work off-site until the office is suitable for a return.

DREW KERWOOD (DELTA CHI)

Associate Director of Prevention & Wellness

Drew Kerwood joins the IHQ staff with extensive experience as a Fraternity professional. In his current role, Kerwood will develop curriculum centered around harm prevention and holistic wellness, create educational programs focused on challenges such as hazing, substance abuse, and sexual assault, and direct the Fraternity’s research and assessment components related to prevention and wellness.

Kerwood received his bachelor of science in health and physical education from West Chester University, and two masters of education in human sexuality studies and higher and post-secondary education from Widener University and Arizona State University respectfully.

Kerwood served as the Director of Chapter Operations at Delta Chi Fraternity from 2015-2016. In 2017, he became a Health and Wellness Consultant for Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. In this role, he developed programming focused on health and wellness, prevention education, risk reduction and personal development.

Development Officer

Brother Augie Farwig, an Epsilon Tau alumnus, comes to IHQ staff as the new Development Officer. In his new role, Farwig is responsible for creating a development plan for the Fraternity, including managing fundraising activities, building a portfolio of new and existing donors, and creating fundraising campaigns, among other responsibilities.

Farwig served as the Director of Chapter Growth at Triangle Fraternity, starting in 2018. He executed an expansion project at the University of Texas, as well as executed 30 chapter visits focused on recruitment and chapter operations.

In addition to his professional experience, Farwig volunteered with Phi Sig at the 67th General Convention and facilitated Cardinal Journey.

Terrill Graduate Fellowship

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The Terrill Graduate Fellowship is for graduating seniors and alumni entering graduate school or presently in graduate school. It is named in honor of the late benefactor Brother Dean Terrill (Knox College ’29).

Brother Ryan Nelson (Florida ’07) was awarded the first-place Terrill Graduate Fellowship. Nelson is going to Harvard Law School as a part of their LL.M. Program.

Nelson worked in law for about eight years, working as corporate counsel for MetLife and as an associate attorney for Jackson Lewis P.C. As a brother of the Delta Tetarton Chapter, Nelson won Brother of the Year in 2005 and served as President and Secretary of the chapter. In addition, he founded two philanthropies at the chapter as an undergraduate.

Brother Nicholas Hartland (Illinois ’15) earned the secondplace Terrill Graduate Fellowship. Hartland is attending Strayer University to study business administration with a concentration in healthcare. Prior to graduate school, Hartland worked as an account manager at PhraMEDium Services. Hartland served a crucial role in building the Alpha Deuteron Chapter at the University of Illinois. He is a founding brother of the chapter, served as the then colony’s President, and eventually was the chapter’s President. On the national level, Hartland served as the undergraduate representative to the Grand Council. Hartland stayed involved with his chapter as a member of the Alpha Deuteron Alumni Board.

Wenderoth Undergraduate Scholarship The Wenderoth Undergraduate Scholarship is available to sophomores and juniors on the basis of academic criteria and an essay competition. It is named in honor of the late benefactor brother Ernest Wenderoth (George Washington ’08).

Brother John Siri Jr. (NJIT ’20) won the first-place Wenderoth Scholarship. Siri studies human-computer interaction at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he earned a place on the Dean’s List every semester of his academic career, while accumulating a 3.8 GPA. In addition to his academic success, Siri secured positions in two different NJIT labs as a student researcher and a research assistant.

Brother Will Kaufman (Purdue ’21) won the second-place Wenderoth Scholarship. He is studying UX Design with a minor in psychology and Spanish at Purdue University. Kaufman has earned Dean’s List honors every semester since Fall of 2017. On campus, Kaufman is a project leader on the Purdue Student Union Board and a member of the Student Advisory Board.

Each fall, millions of new college students travel to each of their respective campuses. One could consider it a new chapter in their life, while others look at it as a clean slate. It’s bittersweet, students now have a place to build their future, but they leave their whole life behind. They built a foundation for years, full of friends and family, and it just disappears. Their bags are unpacked, and their posters are on the wall of their cramped dorm room. The first night is filled with a prevalent noise. Only words to describe it is white like the walls — nothing but solitude and silence.

The monotone noise of a fan running along with the echoes of quietness. The sound was awfully familiar to one I heard last spring. One fateful night over a year ago, I had made the decision that I was going to take my own life. For over two hours, my eyes were filled with tears. I was sitting on my bed, quivering over my fear. The depression and anxiety took over, becoming too severe.

I just wanted all of my pain to disappear, and suicide was the only outcome that seemed clear. It wasn’t until I looked into the mirror… Tears started pouring even more as I started gasping for air. The anxiety started flowing through my veins as my body slowly lost oxygen. I remember waking up in a daze from my anxiety attack, the feeling as the depression deepened into my soul. I just stood in silence.

The most reliable memory I have attached to that fateful night was my outlook on my future. I had just received my college acceptance letter in the mail a few days prior. The letter’s heading read Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. My mind kept racing back and forth between thoughts. I would be leaving for school in just a few months. All I wanted was to be accepted for who I was.

Through the years of bullying and mental illness, I had changed into a different person. Happiness was a rare occasion. I lost all confidence in myself and fell into a bottomless void. Each day was a new challenge as I weighed over 300 pounds and had lost all personality. I was alone and afraid, not a single soul to turn to.

I hoped and prayed every night that I would find people that truly loved me for me.

Fast forward to this past fall, I joined thousands of other students and moved into Ball State. I, too, had built a foundation back home, but I wanted to leave mine behind. For me to truly change my life, I had to leave my past behind. I aspired to become a better man, a better me. My dreams will always be more significant than that suburb I grew up in. I unpacked my bags and said goodbye one last time. It was nothing but solitude and silence in my dorm room, but it’s exactly what I wanted.

A new clean slate was in front of me, and I planned to make the most of it. After building up enough courage, I left the confines of my dorm to explore the campus. I laced up my shoes and made my way to Riverside Avenue. Earlier that summer, my friend Richard had told me about his fraternity, so I decided to take a chance. Walking down the cracked sidewalk, I looked up to see a small, brick house with the letters of Phi Sigma Kappa written upon it. I stepped through the doorway and found exactly what I had been looking for.

During a time of transition and isolation, Phi Sigma Kappa took me under its wing. I found refuge with this group of men I had just met.

Throughout the initiation process, I learned what actually mattered in my life. The Brotherhood at Epsilon Tau built me into a better man, and I can never repay the amount I owe to this Fraternity.

They taught me how to have confidence in myself. They treated me with respect and became my family. They didn’t bully me; they built me up instead of bringing me down. Once I had a backing and genuine pride for myself, I started going to the gym. As of right now, I am down over 65 lbs. I started dieting and focusing on my mental health. My brothers had my back and helped guide me through my journey. My depression is no longer in my life, but I still struggle with anxiety. Each day I learn more and more about myself and how I can cope with it as my brothers have my back no matter what.

Being a Phi Sig isn’t just a social status or paid friendship. This Fraternity is filled with my best friends and family, our bond is unbreakable, and our Brotherhood is for life. I learned that night that nothing would stop me from being myself. For the first time in my life, I am proud to be me, I am proud to be Peyton Norris, and I’m Damn Proud I’m a Phi Sig. AMERICAN UNIVERSITY DEDICATES DICK TAYLOR (AMERICAN ‘52) DIAMOND STORY AND PHOTO VIA AMERICAN UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS

A crowd of campus dignitaries, alumni and a number of current Eagle student-athletes and members of Phi Sigma Kappa helped American University celebrate the naming of Dick Taylor Diamond last Saturday morning.

Dick Taylor, 91 years old, played baseball for the Eagles and graduated from AU in 1952. He was known for his strong pitching skills on the field and for his admirable character and friendliness around campus. Taylor played for legendary AU coach and administrator Stafford “Pop” Cassell and was inducted into the university’s Cassell Hall of Fame in 1972.

The naming celebration was spearheaded by the leadership and generosity of AU Board of Trustee Chairman and class of 1977 alumnus Jack Cassell. Cassell spoke to the gathered guests about his longtime friendship with Taylor and the admiration that he, the Cassell family and the entire AU community hold for him.

President Sylvia Burwell reflected on Taylor as an example of living the university motto of “Once An Eagle, Always an Eagle,” noting his longtime contributions to and his love for his alma mater. Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Billy Walker was master of ceremonies and the event concluded with Taylor throwing out a ceremonial first pitch.

Following the dedication, Phi Sigma Kappa played its annual softball game at the field, now named for one of its fraternity brothers.

A permanent plaque will be installed at the field, honoring Taylor’s longtime service and involvement at American.

THE “BIG CHIEF” TALKS ABOUT OUR FOUNDING

By Albert D. Shonk Jr. Court of Honor member, Phi Sigma Kappa Historian We are four years away f rom the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Phi Sigma Kappa. A committee has been appointed and is already making plans for the celebration in 2023. On March 15, 1893 Founder Barrett gave a colorful speech discussing our founding at a celebration of our 20th Anniversary. He was known to be a most eloquent speaker.

The following is f rom that speech.

“The events and effects of the night (March 15, 1873) are still f resh upon us, and it will be fortunate for us today, if our mental capacities are equal to what may be presented. The humble beginning of any enterprise, the early struggles of any life, are full of interest if success is later attained, hence, upon this occasion, it cannot be out of place for one who shared in the event, to speak a few words of the beginning.

“That the ablest of instructors cannot at all times command the entire attention of their students, was illustrated in the inception of the Fraternity; it was under the eyes of our dear Professor of Chemistry that the preliminary agitation was begun. The records show that upon March 15, 1873 six students of the Massachusetts Agricultural Collage of the Class of 1875 met and assumed certain obligations; the same which many before me have since taken—an act which I trust none regret.

“The names in their original order are as follows: Jabez William Clay, Joseph Francis Barrett, Henry Hague, Xenos Young Clark, Frederick George Campbell, William Penn Brooks. And the leader who was he? Class of 75 had but one leader in all matters requiring originality, foresight, energy, and perseverance. None of his classmates will demur to the statement, that Clay was the leader of us all. It is the fiber of his mind, woven into this f raternal fabric that largely contributes to its strength, durability and beauty. He is not with us today. He died—but not before his sterling qualities had been recognized and appreciated in business and social life.

“Intimately associated with him in this work was another, whose f rail body was a poor setting for an intellect of such brilliancy. Seventy-five men will never forget how we supported Clark f rom one college duty to another, or lingered by him till he gathered strength to proceed. His neat work with pencil or crayon pointed many a college joke, and later, the product of his pen was acceptable to the Masters of Literature and to thousands of readers. Lovable in all ways—his Flame of Life rose and fell, flickered and went out.

“The surviving four are in various walks of life. It is a source of gratification to them that what they commenced is to be continued. The affairs of this Order are now, for the most part, in order and I trust, abler hands. We believe, consideration of the past will bring wisdom to guide in the future, and so, Brothers, to your care and protection, we gladly relinquish the principles and prosperity of our BELOVED FRATERNITY.” Barrett took up the torch as the leader of our Fraternity upon the death of Clay and became the “Big Chief ”. He was the only Founder to serve as Grand President. He was serving in that office when he spoke the above words. He retired f rom the office in 1894. He, however, continued his leadership role until his death in 1918.
