Greetings Brothers and friends!

I am humbled to have to honor of serving as your National President at this important time. We are in the midst of an academic year that is vastly different than we have experienced in our 102-year history. During that time, our fraternity has experienced many successes and challenges. The upcoming year will be no different.

However, it is also important to recall that our fraternity was founded in the midst of a pandemic.

As we think about the months and years ahead, I’d like to start with this thought: the fraternity experience is relevant and necessary as men are seeking connections and opportunities to better themselves and their communities. We are committed to meeting this moment with you as we not only navigate this challenging time and the very real impact it is having on our brothers and communities, but also increased scrutiny on fraternities and questions about the value and relevance of the fraternity experience.

Reflecting on the principles of our fraternity, and the words of the Founder’s Creed - I am inspired and motivated. I hope you are as well, because they are not only extremely relevant, but more importantly require us to act. We are called to serve our communities and our fellow man, and act on our belief in a democracy that is based on justice. As an organization, we believe this fraternity is different and we must continue to challenge ourselves and brothers to be bold and do better at every step of the way. This includes following through on our commitment to address diversity, equity, and inclusion within our organization and community and also live up to our promise of believing in a brotherhood that reaches beyond the limits of Phi Mu Delta and welcomes all men as our brothers. I am proud of our commitment to provide financial resources to members who have been impacted by COVID-19 as well as the progress of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion working group.

The undergraduate experience is different this fall, but the core remains the same. The experience offered by Phi Mu Delta matters and is important. Our values of Brotherhood, Service, and Democracy - remain. This academic year provides us with a unique opportunity to show who we are and what we stand for. Some of these opportunities include taking advantage of technology to enhance chapter support and build stronger connections between chapters, rethinking our educational programming to connect with more brothers, and even conducting initiation and ritual with members of the National Council. As we think about the year ahead, the council has already begun a new strategic planning process that prioritizes the undergraduate membership experience, alumni engagement, and identifying new ways to invest in and support the fraternity.

To our friends - We are better because of your support and your belief in Phi Mu Delta. I thank you for your friendship and inter fraternalism. To all brothers - undergraduates and alumni - we are connected by our brotherhood and I speak on behalf of the National Council when I say - we are here serve you. We look forward to working with you and for you.

FOUNDATION MESSAGE

Dear Brothers: As I sit here and reflect on 2020 as it draws to a close, I can’t help but to be thankful. And this may surprise many of you as 2020 has been nothing but challenging for most if not all of us. Why am I thankful? Because I have supportive family and friends. Because I work for a company that truly cares about all of their thousands of colleagues. Because I have been able to help others! Because when I think about a year ago compared to today…I realize I have done some of my best work in life. This is what happens when challenges arise, when life kicks you in the teeth, when things don’t go as planned…you get back up, dust yourself off, and get on with it.

But how does that relate to Phi Mu Delta? It relates in my humble opinion in this case closely to our idea of Brotherhood. Phi Mu Delta ever since I joined in 1990 has been a place of inclusion. A place of diversity. A place that values every person’s talents and beliefs regardless of the outside world’s opinion. Today more than ever, brotherhood and the ideals around it are more important than ever. Thrust into an unexpected world ruled by a small microscopic virus, during a very contentious political era, and fraught with recent examples of human inequality this simple term has helped to provide perspective on the world for me. Hopefully as you read this letter you to will stop and think about what brotherhood means to you. How the fraternity played a part in your concept of brotherhood. And most importantly, I hope the words inclusion and diversity are a piece of that concept for you like they are for me because we are better together in brotherhood than apart in solitude.

And so, as you peruse the Triangle, I invite you to spend a few minutes reading through its highlights and stories. Spend some time to stop and reflect on your memories related to Phi Mu Delta. Maybe even reach out to that brother you keep meaning to. For us in the Foundation, we will again focus on strategic planning and goals focused on helping our brothers through the support of educational opportunities and programs. This past year that included providing scholarships to individuals who were impacted directly by COVID-19. And as I reflect, this was one of my proudest moments as I helped others make the memories, I hold so dear. And so, I want to pause and thank everyone who gave to the Foundation whether recently or in the past! You have helped someone go to college, to make themselves better, to become a closer brother to us all, and of course to learn our idea of Brotherhood. Now please take a moment and enjoy the Triangle and remember what brought you to Phi Mu Delta. Then, I would ask you to think about how you can support your brothers during these challenging times because we can accomplish so much more together than apart!

FRATERNITY IN THE AGE OF COVID-19 LEWIS LAND (MU ALPHA'12) A passage from our Creed has always stuck with me when considering the nature of Brotherhood in Phi Mu Delta: “I believe in the intrinsic worth of the man at my side, and in his ability to make good and justify my faith in him.” Of the three central pillars of our organization’s values—Democracy, Service, and Brotherhood—I’ve always thought that Brotherhood has been the most difficult to quantify, even more so in the era of COVID-19.

The American college campus looks dramatically different than it did even one year ago. In some instances, students wear masks to class, check their temperatures before entering campus buildings, and sit at least six feet apart in gymnasiums, auditoriums, and lounges that have been retrofitted into temporary classrooms. Some students study remotely from their residence halls or homes. A few campuses have moved entirely to online instruction. How do we value the man at our side if we are unable to let him get within six feet of us? Daunting though the challenge may seem, I can think of no greater way to face the coming pandemic than through the persistence of Brotherhood.

In my mind, Brotherhood awakens through interactions of consequence, interactions that are challenging, reflective, and supportive. It is not just in moments of joy and celebration, or in trial and tribulation, that Brotherhood is forged and maintained. We become aware of the intrinsic value of the man at our side in moments where we need to the support of others.

To those who ask of the value of fraternity in the era of COVID-19, I believe treasuring human interactions of consequence transcends time and indeed place. I believe there is much to be gained from cultivating vital human connection. And now more than ever—especially in a time of increased partisanship and physical and social distancing—I believe the value of Fraternity lies in recognizing the intrinsic worth of the man at my side, and in his ability to make good and justify my faith in him.

Mu Beta Chapter Tackles COVID-19 Head On Zak Kratowicz, Mu Beta'23

The Brothers of Mu Beta Chapter at Ohio Northern University were hit hard by the COVID-19 outbreak. In March of 2020, we were required to leave campus, with little notice. Our new Executive Board featured many brothers who had never held an Executive position before. COVID-19 seemed to be a roadblock, but the Brothers of Mu Beta fought back to ensure that we maintained a sound brotherhood.

After the Brothers were sent home, the Executive Board met weekly to discuss plans and options. The remainder of the Spring semester, Brotherhood meetings were held weekly online via Google Meet, and business continued as usual. More importantly, these meetings allowed us as a brotherhood to stay connected during difficult times. We made it a priority during these meetings to focus on fellowship, instilling joy and connections. Our work continued over the summer as the Board continued to meet bi-weekly in order to to develop plans and strategies for the Fall semester. We did not know what the Fall would look like, and were eagerly waiting for news regarding a return to campus. We formed preliminary plans for a variety of scenarios including virtual, on-campus, and hybrid learning environments. During this same time, our Brotherhood Chair continued to host weekly online meetings for brothers to connect over the summer. Mu Beta felt it was a necessity for the members to stay connected.

The mental health of our chapter has always been a priority and COVID-19 raised some significant mental health issues around the country and with college students. When the University announced a return to campus for fall 2020, we began planning for a “socially distant” semester involving recruitment, brotherhood, and social events. We focused on how to keep the brothers safe and we returned to campus in early August hitting the ground running.

We focused our recruitment efforts on one singular mindset: the great benefits of brotherhood. Most of our recruitment events were informal hangouts. The recruits got the chance to spend time with brothers with no specific agenda in mind except social wellness and relationship building. These recruits had most of their high school senior year cut short and we as a brotherhood wanted to give them a new home and a new start in college. Our recruitment efforts were split into groups of less than 10 to ensure safety and follow our University’s guidelines. This provided recruits with the opportunity to meet smaller groups of brothers at a time, allowing connections on a more personal level. Our recruitment strategy paid off. Even in times of social distancing the Mu Beta chapter inducted 7 new members. This is an incredibly impressive group of men who live the Phi Mu Delta pillars. These men, in their short time on campus, have shown a dedication to leadership and positive societal change. These brothers of Mu Beta are the future leaders of Ohio Northern University. With the recruitment process complete, our primary focus returned towards brotherhood. No matter how many programs, socials, or events we put on, it will be the connections with our brothers that we will value the most. We have reinstated “fun brotherhoods” in which we spend our weekly meeting hanging out with brothers, playing games, and enjoying college life together (of course being socially distanced with our Phi Mu Delta masks).

As we reach the semester midpoint we have started to reflect on our efforts. This past academic year has been hard on the membership. Brothers have been faced with challenges never seen or thought of before. The Brothers of Mu Beta have endured and continued to strive for excellence. This past year has been a testament to our strength and resiliency. We as a Chapter have realized the importance of our Brothers and the connections that we share. We are brothers for life and we need to be there for each other when times get hard and this past year has truly highlighted how important this is. Things are changing everyday and it's important to stay ahead of the curve and keep moving forward. As Tom Murphy has stated many times: “It’s time to build a new ship.” COVID-19 has forced our hand in taking this advice to heart. Things will be different from here on out, but it is safe to say that Mu Beta is ready for the change. The Brothers, our strong core of advisors, and dedicated alumni are ready to take on the challenge. We have started construction of our new ship and are ready to see where it takes us in the future.

A LOOK BACK AT CONCLAVE 2020 FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OUR 102 YEAR HISTORY CONCLAVE WAS HELD VITUALLY.

Not since World War II has the Fraternity cancelled an in-person National Conclave. Like many other organizations, we needed to adapt to the loss of group meetings and gatherings by moving to a virtual online platform. Over 90 undergraduates, alumni and campus professionals joined us online to debate legislation, establish policies and elect the new National Council.

MEET THE NATIONAL COUNCIL 2020 - 2022 William T. Foran III (Mu Theta'01) At IUP, Will earned degrees in Political Science and a M.A. in Higher Education. His professional experience is in in higher education and association management with nearly 20 years of experience including work at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Mount Union and Western Illinois University before joining the team at the North American Interfraternity Conference in 2008. He currently serves as the Senior Vice President and is responsible for the Conference’s educational programming and campus support program. Will previously served as a member of the National Council from 2001 – 2008 and as National Secretary and National Vice President before joining the board of the Phi Mu Delta Educational Foundation, which he served on until this summer. Will resides in Noblesville, IN with his wife Gretchen and family.

Ryan Grogan (Nu Beta'16) Ryan graduated from the Nu Beta Chapter in 2016 and joined the National Council that summer as a member at large. In 2017 Ryan served as the chapter advisor for Nu Xi at USM and received the Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award. In 2018, Ryan started his second term on council as National VP and then transitioned to the National President in the same term. Outside of PMD, he has served in the AmeriCorps program and currently works for Special Olympics NH as a Schools Manager.

Joseph Thompson (Mu Alpha'08) Joe graduated from Susquehanna University with a degree in History and Secondary Education, followed by a Master’s degree in College Student Affairs from Rutgers University. He currently serves as the Assistant Director of Student Development at Stockton University where he oversees the fraternity and sorority community. He is a college speaker for Greek University where he focuses on issues of masculinity. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and four cats.

National Treasurer

Richard Winter (Mu Zeta'10) Richard earned a B.S. in Political Science in 2010 and a M.A.in Liberal Arts in 2012, both from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. Since his time at Lock Haven, Rich has volunteered for Phi Mu Delta at various times and he has previously served as the President of the Mu Zeta Alumni Association. He is employed at Letum, Inc., a death care management company, and serves as the Vice President of Operations. He also serves as the President of the Louisiana Cemetery Association. Currently residing in Shreveport, Louisiana with his wife, Kathryn, his son, Bobby, and their dog, Trudy. In his free time you may be able to catch Rich playing World of Warcraft or other online games, as well as board gaming, reading, or sampling a great craft beer.

MEET THE NATIONAL COUNCIL 2020 - 2022 Louie Land (Mu Alpha'12) Louie has studied at Susquehanna University (BA), Bucknell University (MA), and the University of Idaho (MFA). He served as the Chapter Advisor for the Mu Alpha chapter after graduation and received the Dr. Albert D. Nutting Award for Outstanding Chapter Advisor at Conclave in 2018. A teacher and academic, Louie’s classes often intersect with popular culture: he has taught classes on superhero comic books and films, contemporary poetry and fiction, and jazz. He is also a semi-professional musician—his album Afterglow was released in 2018 on West of Everything Records.

Mike Doran (Mu Alpha'17) Mike has worked professionally in enrollment management at the higher education level at institutions in New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. He is from York, Pennsylvania and currently lives in North Canton, Ohio. Before National Council, Mike volunteered with the National Fraternity in multiple capacities as an alumni board member, recruitment specialist, and District Governor. When Mike is not working or studying for his M.S. in Data Science degree, he is an adjunct at Ursuline College teaching English and Creative Writing courses.

Phillip Morin (Nu Gamma'12) Originally from Northern Vermont, Phil moved to Burlington in 2008 to attend UVM. He remained in the area following graduation. He shares a home with his partner of nine years, Tucker and their cat, Grey, and their dog Nico. Through his work at Hunger Free Vermont, he provides integrated outreach and training on 3SquaresVT, a federal nutrition program that works to eliminate food insecurity. In collaboration with federal, state, and community partners, he works to address barriers to participation so all Vermonters can access the programs for which they are eligible. In addition to his volunteer work on Phi Mu Delta’s National Council, Phil also volunteers his time at his local library, with New Leaders Council Vermont, and with the United Way of Northwestern Vermont.

Member-at-Large

The role of the National Council of Phi Mu Delta is to establish leadership consistent with the Fraternity’s Constitution and Bylaws, regarding the finances, management and activities for the further advancement of the Phi Mu Delta Fraternity. The National Council is the authority for the governance of the Fraternity. Members serve a two-year term.

Recruitment at a Distance Michael Doran, Mu Alpha'17 In the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic, colleges and universities return to campus with some semblance of normalcy and Phi Mu Delta chapters execute recruitment in mixed formats.

The COVID-19 Pandemic forcibly shoved the latter half of the spring semester into a virtual space. With colleges and universities picking up the pieces of a chaotic spring, the summer ushered in an unexpected and tumultuous planning for a successful fall semester. Many institutions have moved into a hybrid model of learning: virtual and in-person classroom experiences blending socially-distanced, masked discussions and virtual components. What it lacks is stability.

With many blended formats and many institutions, Fraternity/Sorority communities across the country have one thing on their mind: recruitment. Phi Mu Delta, as a national organization, looked to its partnership in Techniphi’s Chapterbuilder and PhiredUp programs as key experts in engaging prospects in a virtual space.

National leadership decided to add a temporary incentive for our groups returning to campus, virtually or in-person, to emphasize the importance of recruitment and ensure the longevity of the organization. Chapters who successfully complete common standards for the incentive could potentially see financial gain for their local chapter or individual new members if they induct new members.

As a response to growing concerns regarding recruitment, the national organization has also tasked a new initiative: the Lion’s Share Recruitment Initiative (LSRI). The LSRI, staffed by alumni volunteers and a national council liaison, is a coaching model of weekly check-ins with volunteers who are experts within corporate recruitment to ensure a successful fall semester.

Though the national organization has taken huge strides to effectively combat an unpredictable landscape of recruitment, many chapters have had variable success in recruitment this fall in part due to institutional short-sightedness but also the unique complications that come from engaging potential new members at a distance.

Some chapters have taken to social media re-strategizing their outreach around the meaning of brotherhood and community in a tumultuous time. Others have shaped creative means of getting face time with students through group zoom calls and video game hangouts. Even more have thought of clever ways to gather in small groups in-person at a distance.

With all of the planning and capabilities of Phi Mu Delta chapters to pivot effectively if necessary, there is one truth that the United States and institutions of higher education know for sure, and that is that things could change quickly. The chapters and brothers of Phi Mu Delta have shifted this crisis as an opportunity to explore effective recruitment at a distance.

My Thoughts: The Role of Fraternity in Redefining Masculinity Steve Sassaman, Mu Alpha'12 Amidst the heightened awareness for racial justice that had emerged from 2020 is the recognition of the toxic masculinity which permeates throughout western society. The true plights of the pandemic were quickly overshadowed by those who sought to “defend their freedom” by refusing to wear a mask for fear of looking weak. This misplaced fear of uncertainty cascaded into the glorification of alt-right groups who mistakenly sought hate under the guise of a sense of belonging. Men have been socialized to shield their vulnerability and present strength causing negative thoughts to be bottled up and ultimately unleased in a harmful manner.

Despite the rampant rise in active shooting incidents, the “right” to protect oneself is prioritized over identifying the root of the issue itself. In fact, toxic masculinity is so much of a public health issue that even companies such as Axe and Gillette have funded research to address the issue citing the billions of dollars in estimated costs each year.

Humans are innately social creatures, yet men have been socialized to seek solitude and aversion to vulnerability. The rampant acceleration on perceived connection through social media has enabled individuals who are seeking companionship to deviate from genuine connections in their local community by finding other men who "get them". These groups have fueled conspiracy theories and the pervasive jingoism which is threatening the very democracy we value. In addition, hatred is spread through an “othering” process, whether it be women or members of the LGTBQ+ community, as men misidentify the source of their woes. Society has been influenced by a competitive and performative approach in which we prioritize perceived comfort through prescriptive expectations. This regimented movement from one extracurricular event to the next prevents boys from experiencing the vital rights of passage our ancestors so valued. In this vain, men never grow out of boyhood necessitate continued entitlement through the objectification of women as the caregiver.

Though fraternities have nationally contributed to the troupe of hyper masculinity, we provide a space where men can find the genuine community we need. This community is not defined simply as having a group of bros you can hang with, but a space where one can both be vulnerable and provide the willingness to hold brothers accountable. The current divisiveness is the direct result of this failure to have critical discourse with others.

We must not only redefine fraternity but redefine our perception of strength. True strength is a willingness to admit faults and seek to grow. Though the pandemic has caused angst across fraternal organizations as “we can’t recruit” this is an opportunity to re-center ourselves in our definition of brotherhood. A necessary service is providing a sense of belonging to our fellow students. The identity of masculinity can in fact be healthy rather than toxic. In order to shift this narrative, we must dismiss our notion of dominance, control, and entitlement, and open ourselves up to true connections with those around us.

Flying High on Brotherhood Derrick Dubois, Nu Gamma ‘13 Certified Flight Instructor Commercial Airplane Multiengine I first met my flying mentor at Conclave 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio. I had been recently elected president of the Nu Gamma Colony. It had been relayed to me that one of our prominent alumni, Edward Peet Nu Gamma ‘65, owned a few aircraft. I had questions and no intention of asking him for flights, I knew that these were expensive.

Aviation was a dream of mine but I had no way of making it a reality, or so I thought. In typical Conclave fashion, we all found each other at a round table chatting and laughing well into the night. As casually as possible, I mentioned what I knew about him. He chuckled and quickly said, “When can you come flying?” His invitation was not hollow. He followed with, “When will you be in Vermont next?”

Two days after Conclave, I found myself inspecting his dairy farm, the hanger and aircraft. Ed had decided to fly me to my parents home for the summer. The flight was beyond memorable. I will never forget Ed’s careful teaching ability. The mentorship did not stop after that first flight, as I transitioned into flying for a career, Ed was sure to remind me that I could always come back to his farm. The feeling of the engine roaring to life with the application of throttle, the wheels passing over the crushed gravel runway and the quiet liftoff above the foliage covered mountains are just a few of the memories I have gained. One day, Ed asked if I had flown over the Statue of Liberty. I was shocked that such a thing could happen. Two hours later, we were cruising past Manhattan, Lady Liberty and Central Park. As I head into the airline industry, economy willing, my time flying a Cessna in rural Vermont will remain some of the most enjoyable flying memories that I may ever experience--thanks to an incredible mentor.

CALL TO ACTION: ALUMNI NETWORKING Richard Winter, Mu Zeta'10

In today’s world our network of Brothers is more valuable than it has ever been. If you are not looking to establish and build relationships with Brothers across all our chapters and alumni, you are missing out on some great opportunities. After speaking with different Brothers on their experience working with other brothers, here are the four main take-aways I can share with you..

Relationships form out of mutual interest not because you want or need something. Not a single person I spoke to started building the relationship with the intent of finding employment.

The initial contact and relationship started off of mutual interests and mostly off of volunteerism with Phi Mu Delta at every level. Staying involved with the Fraternity even after college continued to provide opportunities for involvement and relationship building.

Be Patient. It takes time, and it cannot be rushed.

Almost every person I talked with said the same thing; they had known each other for years before employment opportunities opened. In some cases, it was the relationship with one brother that allowed for an opportunity with another based on recommendation.

Phi Mu Delta develops a certain kind of man.

Everyone felt that hiring someone or being hired by a brother had a comfortable level of trust off the start. There was a level of expected integrity and character that was provided, and many of the skills we are taught as undergraduates translated into the work place: leadership, professional accountability, intrapersonal skills, dedication, and a strong sense of teamwork.

Relationships should be mutual. Whether you are an undergraduate or recent graduate looking for advice or information, or an alumnus looking to understand generational differences, the network of Brotherhood we have built in this Fraternity can help with just that. Taking the time to reach out, connect, and stay connected is the first step to ensuring you have a solid network to work with.

PHI MU DELTA ALUMNI PROFILES The Connecter

Builds cross-generational connections with undergraduates; might give but doesn't feel is is completely necessary; cares about the well-being of their chapter but also doesn't feel the need to step in and volunteer for their chapter.

The Uniter

Serves as a vocal or public patriarch for their chapter-- knows all alumni and has personal connections with each of them. Can unite brothers behind a common cause; attends rituals and reunions, but doesn't necessarily work hard on the planning.

The Giver

Serves as the quiet, behind-the-scenes patriarch but doesn't seek the attention or praise; Gives the organization their all; donate annually; well respected by brothers for their giving nature, and gives because of what the chapter gave them; loves host institution.

The Leader

Highly involved during their undergraduate career and most likely served in a chapter leadership position; runs their alumni association or has a heavy hand in the alumni business; attends national programs; gives because of the impact ΦΜΔ has on leaders.

The Supporter

Heightened affinity for the host institution; talks a lot about their experience and the lessons they learned; loves Phi Mu Delta and craves the traditions and memories; gives because they are reflective and love the memorable experiences.

The Mentor

Loves and connects with undergraduates on a much deeper level than "the connecter" does because their relationships are personable; often works for their alma mater or institution; gives time and talent but not necessarily money; serves as a chapter advisor.

The Friend

Gives and donates annually or monthly; isn't necessarily involved or engaged in events, educational programs, or national programs but values the work the fraternity has done and continues to do; has a tendency to show affinity with large gifts.

2020 Day of Giving The 2020 Day of Giving on April 25th was a success! Recognizing the needs of our undergraduate members during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sapphire Support Fund was established. This fund granted gifts of $250 - $1000 to members with financial need for the Fall 2020 term. We were able to support 100% of applicants and provided grants totaling $9500 to our members!

Past National President, William H. Wilson Joins Chapter Eternal The Fraternity was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Past National President, William H. Wilson (Mu Epsilon'58) in April of 2018. Bill served two terms as National President from 1970 until 1974. Previous to this role, he served in several capacities on the National Council. Following his Presidency, he served as Chairman of the Triangle Trust Fund. Bill was always ready with a warm smile and greeting. He was recognized by Phi Mu Delta with its Distinguished Service Award in 2004.
