Toshio Akiyama, MUSIC DIRECTOR OMIYA WIND SYMPHONY
Born in Omiya City, Japan, Toshio Akiyama studied at the Musashino School of Music, the University of Tokyo School of Fine Arts, and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He taught for thirty years at the Musashino School of Music and conducted the Sony Concert Band for forty years. He is currently Honorary Music Culture Advisor for Hamamatsu City. He has served as VicePresident of the Kantoh Band Association and the All Japan Band Association, and on the Board of Directors of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. He is an honorary member of the American Bandmasters Association and in 1996 became Honorary President of the Asian Band Directors Association. He is PastPresident of the Japanese Band Directors Association and has been their Honorary President since 2003. In addition to numerous awards for his contribution to bands, including 1992 Midwest Band Clinic International Award, he is also known as a composer and author. He was awarded The Omiya City Cultural Award in 1998, The Music Award of Kan-ichi SHIMOFUSA in 2013, The Order of the Rising Sun in 2014, among other achievements over the years.

MAJOR GENERAL( RET.) AKIRA TAKEDA, GUEST CONDUCTOR, OMIYA WIND SYMPHONY MG (Ret.) AKIRA TAKEDA is former commander and conductor of the Central Band, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. He retired from JGSDF in 2017 after ten years’ tenure.
As premier band commander of the JGSDF, MG Takeda has conducted main concerts, tour concerts, national event performances and numerous recordings.
MG Takeda holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Musashino Academia Musicae in trumpet performance. His primary instruction on trumpet came from Mr. Sueyoshi Nozaki, formerly of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and Prof. Yutaka Tobe, principal trumpet of the New Japan Philharmonic. He also studied wind band methods with Mr. Toshio Akiyama, Honorary President of the Japanese Band Directors Association. After graduation, he continued conducting studies with Prof. Kazue Kamiya.
MG Takeda was invited to guest conduct the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in 2009 and the U.S. Military Academy Band in 2012, where he shared examples of Japanese wind band literature with American audiences. Takeda also authorized the Central Band’s chamber group to participate in Chicago’s Midwest Clinic in 2011, 2013 and 2016.
MG Takeda began his military career in 1980 as a staff officer of the Central Band. His assignments as band officer included commander of the 2nd Combined Brigade Band, the 1st Division Band, and the Northeastern Army Band, as well as chief of the education division of the Central Band. In parallel, he was enrolled at Tokyo University of the Arts as an auditor in 1987. He participated in a master class of the 1996 International Conductors Course in the Netherlands under the guidance of Prof. Eugene Corporon of the University of North Texas College of Music.
In 2009, MG Takeda and the Central Band were awarded the prestigious Colonel George S. Howard Citation of Musical Excellence for Military Concert Bands, administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. He was also awarded the Outstanding Bandmaster Award from Phi Beta Mu, the international Bandmasters Fraternity in 2016. Takeda is the president of the Japan Sousa Society and is a member of the Japanese Band Directors Association. He was elected as an honorary member of the American Bandmasters Association in 2015. Currently he is a professor at the Musashino Academia Musicae and the Shobi Music College.

dr leonard tan, Music director The PhilHarmonic Winds Singapore Leonard Tan was appointed Music Director of The Philharmonic Winds in 2008. Since then, he has led the orchestra to numerous success and broke new ground through acclaimed performances of works such as John Corigliano’s Symphony No. 3, Circus Maximus, Karel Husa’s Music for Prague, and numerous new commissions. He also champions the works of Singaporean composers with the Philharmonic Winds. Tan earned his doctoral degree from the world famous Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he studied orchestral conducting with David Effron, Arthur Fagen and Murray Sidlin, and wind conducting with Stephen Pratt. He also participated in seminars by Leonard Slatkin, Cliff Colnot and William Jon Gray, and conducted the Indiana University Symphony Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, University Orchestra, Conductor’s Orchestra, and Summer Concert Band. Prior to his doctoral studies, he studied orchestral conducting through masterclasses with Leif Segerstam and Alexander Polischuk in Russia, where he worked with the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, and with Johannes Schlaefli, where he worked with Academic Orchestra Zurich. He also worked with leading wind conductors such as Eugene Corporon, Jack Stamp, and Craig Kirchhoff. Notable performances include conducting musicians from the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in a SingaporeJapan Composers Exchange Concert, Singapore National Youth Orchestra musicians at the “Ong Teng Cheong” concert, and concerts with artists such as the Boston Brass. He has conducted performances at Vienna’s Golden Hall of the Musikverein, New York’s Carnegie Hall, and Sydney Opera House. Performances under Maestro Tan’s direction have been lauded by local and international critics. Singapore’s The Straits Times described his performance of Corigliano’s Symphony No. 3 as “masterfully helmed,” while the American press lauded his “artful conducting.” In addition to the Philharmonic Winds, Leonard Tan was also Principal Conductor of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, where he was praised by the press for his performance of “rare blazing intensity.”

クラリネット独奏 秋山かえで
Kaede Akiyama, Clarinet SOLO OMIYA WIND SYMPHONY Kaede Akiyama started to study clarinet when she was 12 years old under the late Yukio Ohashi who was the former principal clarinet player of the NHK Symphony Orchestra. She graduated from High School affiliated to Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music (Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku), Tokyo, Japan, and earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music from the University, where she studied under Professor Yuji Murai. While working on her bachelor degree, she performed in Rookie Concert in Saitama, where she was born, and collaborated in a concerto by A. Copland with the Orchestra of the University. While working on her master degree, she was invited to the special concert for the Japanese Royal Family at the Imperial Palace. She took part in Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago in 2002 as a member of Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, and the concert tours of Siena Wind Orchestra conducted by Yutaka Sado many times. She has participated in the recording of popular music by Akiko Yano, and also film music by Koji Ueno. Besides performing in many concerts and recordings, she is commissioned to adjudicate on band contests and ensemble contests all over Japan. She is also a committed educator for young musicians. She currently resides in Saitama and is an instructor at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, Saitama Prefectural High School of The Arts, and Matsubushi High School.

Omiya Wind Symphony Omiya, Saitama Prefecture, Japan The Omiya Wind Symphony (Community Band) was founded in 1993 in Omiya City (re-named to Saitama City), Saitama Prefecture, Japan. Under the direction of Maestro Toshio Akiyama as Music Director, Omiya Wind Symphony has grown to a membership of 85 music lovers of all walks of life residing throughout the Saitama City area. In 2009, Robert W. Smith composed “Sensei’s Ride On the Cherry Blossom Express” to commemorate the 80th birthday of Toshio Akiyama, which was premiered by Omiya Wind Symphony in Japan. In 2002, the Omiya Wind Symphony made its first overseas concert tour to South Korea. The performance in Wonju City in Gangwon Province was received enthusiastically by audiences. A concert tour to San Diego in April 2007 was its first step in the United States of America. At the end of 2008, the Band made a tour to Chia Yi City and Taipei in Taiwan where its performances were warmly received. In 2014, the Omiya Wind Symphony concluded a sister band between the Honolulu Wind Ensemble at a Joint Concert in Saitama City, Japan.

The Philharmonic Winds Singapore The word “Philharmonic” translates to a fondness or devotion to music, and The Philharmonic Winds truly embraces that. The members of the wind orchestra came together because of a common love for music, and ever since have endeavoured to present the finest music for wind orchestra to the Singaporean audience. Formed in 2000, The Philharmonic Winds has grown to more than 80 dedicated members. A congregation of skilled musicians from all walks of life – tertiary students to working professionals, music students to wind band instructors – The Philharmonic Winds is proud to be home to a thriving musical community. Amongst a myriad of notable performances, The Philharmonic
Winds has performed a collectionof landmark works from the wind band repertoire, ranging from the symphonies of Paul Hindemith, John Corigliano and James Barnes to well known favourites of Alfred Reed and Adam Gorb. The wind orchestra is also well-versed in a variety of musical styles, having presented the lush melodies of Percy Grainger, the genius of Mozart and Varèse, and jazz standards. The Philharmonic Winds is privileged to have collaborated with renowned musicians from all over the world, including trombonists Jörgen van Rijen (NL), Brett Baker (UK) and Ko-ichiro Yamamoto (JPN), saxophonists Kenneth Tse (HK/ USA), Shin-ichiro Hikosaka (JPN), Vincent Gnojek (USA), Yasuto Tanaka (JPN) and Masato Kumoi (JPN), marimba

As one of Singapore’s premier arts flag-bearers, The Philharmonic Winds is proud to have received much recognition on the world stage. In July 2005, The Philharmonic Winds participated in the World Music Contest in Kerkrade,the Netherlands, and became the first and only wind orchestra from Singapore to be awarded a Gold medal with Distinction in the First Division (Harmony Band). The following year, The Philharmonic Winds became the first wind orchestra to perform at the Singapore Arts Festival. In May 2009, the band was invited to Hamamatsu, Japan, to perform at the 40th anniversary

of the Japan Band Clinic, one of the most prestigious wind conferences in Japan and around the world. This was followed up with the honour of performing at the 15th World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) Conference in Chiayi, Taiwan, in 2011. In 2013, The Philharmonic Winds returned from a successful tour of Spain, clinching Second Prize at the 127th Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Musica – Ciudad de Valencia (the International Wind Band Contest “City of Valencia”). The Philharmonic Winds was the first Asian wind orchestra to be invited to take part in the contest. In addition, a joint concert was held in Spain with the Symphonic Band Centre Artistic Musical de Bétera (Symphonic Band CAM Bétera) as well as the Symphonic Band Asociacion Musico-Cultural “La Lira” de Pozuelo. In August 2014, The Philharmonic Winds, together with its youth arm
Philharmonic Youth Winds, performed at the closing gala concert of the Hong Kong International Band Fair. Taking their role of cultural diplomacy to a whole new level, The Philharmonic Winds featured the Nontri Orchestra Winds from Thailand as a guest orchestra in 2009 and the Baden-Württemberg Youth Wind Orchestra from Germany in 2012. Both concerts culminated with special performances which saw more than 100 musicians from both nations performing together on stage. An avid supporter of local music, The Philharmonic Winds staged numerous concerts dedicated to works by Singaporean composers such as Robert Casteels, Zechariah Goh Toh Chai, Ho Chee Kong, Leong Yoon Pin, Phoon Yew Tien, Kelly Tang, Terrence Wong Fei Yang and Wong Kah Chun. In 2010 and 2015, to encourage and develop young local composers,

The Philharmonic Winds made open calls for new compositions, from which an international panel of experts selected works to receive their premieres at the “Singapore Compose!” concerts. In 2002, The Philharmonic Winds initiated the Philharmonic Youth Winds, providing an opportunity for young, passionate musicians to further their ensemble experience. In 2008, the young orchestra was crowned the top First Division band at the inaugural Singapore International Band Festival, under the baton of its Resident Conductor Adrian Chiang and with guidance by musicians from The Philharmonic Winds. In 2010 and 2012, Philharmonic Youth Winds emerged amongst the top three bands and attained a Gold medal and a Silver medal in the Open Division of the same festival. In July 2018, the musicians of Philharmonic Youth Winds won another Gold medal in the latest edition of the festival.
The Philharmonic Winds has also initiated other ensembles, such as the Philharmonic Clarinet Choir, Philharmonic Saxophone Ensemble and Philharmonic Brass Quintet. In March 2015, under the guidance of Joost Flach, The Philharmonic Winds introduced the Philharmonic Chamber Winds to explore the vast chamber music repertoire. Besides its regular concert seasons at the Esplanade Concert Hall and overseas performances, The Philharmonic Winds also regularly participates in arts outreach performances and presents free community outreach concerts in the heartlands including Tampines and Ang Mo Kio, as well as in malls, to reach out to the masses, build new audiences and bring music to more Singaporeans. To achieve its community objectives, the wind orchestra as well as its ensembles work with numerous community partners such as the National Arts Council, Gardens by the

Bay, Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, Singapore General Hospital and more. In March 2015, The Philharmonic Winds surprised the public with a flash-mob performance at IKEA as part of the Arts In Your Neighbourhood series, and held a Mother’s Day concert at Gardens By The Bay in May 2015. Since 2008, The Philharmonic Winds has also been part of the SPH Gift of Music series by Singapore Press Holdings, entertaining thousands at various locations. The Philharmonic Winds has collaborated with many local talents from other musical and arts genres, such as stage actors Benjamin Chow, Sebastian Tan and Gani Karim, singers Benjamin Kheng, Charlie Lim, Nathan Hartono, Tay Kewei, Tay Kexin, Sara Wee, Lindy Chia and veteran Xinyao singers
Hong Shao Xuan and Pan Ying. The wind orchestra has also collaborated with Dingyi Music Company, Ministry of Bellz, Vocal Associates, sand artist Lawrence Koh, dizi soloist Heng Xiangle, young soprano Corey Koh, young pipa soloist Chen Xinyu, Zhangde Primary School Choir, storyteller Kamini Ramachandran and narrator/actor William Ledbetter. A firm believer of arts education, The Philharmonic Winds has created and developed an original work that introduces wind instruments to students in a fun and interactive way at their schools. This commitment has also culminated in a tremendously well-received “Fun with Music” concert series, with the latest instalment held in April 2016.

Since its inception, The Philharmonic Winds has developed into a mature music institution, playing a part to better society in more ways other than bringing music and the arts into the lives of Singaporeans. In 2014, The Philharmonic Winds held a concert entitled “Circle of Life – A Night of Musicals” and helped to raise $35,000 for children cared for by the six member charities under The Children’s Charities Association of Singapore. In 2015, The Philharmonic Winds performed at the Yellow Ribbon Prison Run which raised more than $85,000 for the Yellow Ribbon Fund. At the Run, The Philharmonic Winds performed with two inmates, including a special arrangement of a song written by one of them. In 2016, The Philharmonic Winds performed at Pathlight
School and brought the highlyappreciative audience to their feet with its gift of music. In May 2017, members of the wind orchestra collaborated with other local and international artists to perform at the Singapore Indoor Stadium for the Voices of Harmony concert which raised more than $2 million for the beneficiaries of the Singapore Buddhist Free Clinic. The Philharmonic Winds is constantly striving to present fresh and exciting quality music to its audiences and aspires to achieve professionalism in all aspects of music-making, with the aim of becoming one of the finest wind orchestras in the region.
