Let the class watch the video-documentary on the suguidanon (epics) of Panay Bukidnon. This video-documentary was produced by scholars and academicians who are advocates of Panayanon Studies led by world-renowned anthropologist, Dr. Alicia P. Magos, of University of the Philippines Visayas. You can download the video at: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=vZn2JAsn16w.

Points to Ponder

1. The Panay Bukidnon people are mountain dwellers but their tangible and intangible heritage, which include diverse art forms exhibit maritime worldviews and traditions. 2. The maritime worldviews and traditions support the theory that once upon a time they were shoreline dwellers engaged in maritime affairs like boat-building and seafaring but eventually diffused toward the hinterlands as a result of colonization. 3. Despite being pushed in the hinterlands, they preserved their maritime customs and traditions, including their priceless art forms such as folk literary genres, namely: suguidanon (epic), talda (repartee), dilot (love song), and ambahan (chants for the spirits/welcoming guests).

Questions to Answer

1. Once upon a time, the Panay Bukidnon people are popular as skilled seafarers.

How is this reflected in their folk literature known as the suguidanon (epic)? 2. Discuss the role of binukot (kept-maiden) as keeper of Panay Bukidnon heritage, notably folk literature such as the suguidanon (epic)? 3. How would you describe Panay Bukidnon folk literature in general? How can it be preserved for the present and future generations to cherish and treasure with?
