ISHMASH is a collection of cartoons and graphics I have done over the years from 1976 up to present day. The earliest graphic is the cover, called FOOL ON THE HILL (sees the sun going down), based on the Beatles song, which I painted in 1976, while doing my National Service in Rhodesia. I used to spend my off duty hours drawing and painting. Others were done in UK and Australia. Some of the graphics are roughs and unfinished and were done on the spur of the moment before the idea evaporated (such as TROO LOVE and VIRUS TRIBUNAL). I will redo them at some stage. None of these graphics have been published before.

“BIG AL - Al was a six foot 6 inches artist friend of mine who seemed to be permanently unemployed so I got him a job as a bus conductor (in my mind) on a double decker bus, with a very low ceiling, when I was living in London, 1980. I hope he appreciated my efforts!!! 6

BROKEN HEART
A VERY SAD SOB STORY....
“BROKEN HEART“ - done on my old Amiga computer in 1996 using Personal Paint, which was Amiga’s answer to Photoshop. It had no layers and only had gradients and was really low resolution. I have made a short 3D film of this idea called “King of Hearts“ using Maya.
“HEARTATTACK” - I did this cartoon in June,1995, probably inspired by all the suicide bombings that were going on In Iraq at the time. 10

Ice Man ‘probably froze to death’ A prehistoric man, dubbed the Ice Man, whose mummified corpse was found in a glacier on the border between Italy and Austria in 1991 probably “lay down in exhaustion, fell asleep and froze to death”, according to the first detailed study of the frozen corpse published. Found 10,000ft above sea level when an Alpine glacier began to melt, the body was preserved complete with skin and internal organs and nicknamed Otzi after the Otztaler Alpen mountains where it was found. Originally thought to be 500 years old, researchers at Oxford and Zurich showed it was between 5,300 and 5,400 years old. Now stored in a fridge at the University of Innsbruck, the corpse was taken out recently for a fifteen minute investigation by a team of scientists from Germany, Austria and Sweden. The study had to be brief to prevent the corpse from deteriorating. It
showed that the man was between 25 and 40 years old, a little over 5ft tall and wore a ring in his right ear. A sharp rectangular dent in his right earlobe that could only have been formed before his death indicated that he wore “an ornamental stone”, the researchers say in Science magazine. He also had fractured left arm, but this may have been caused in the attempts of amateurs to remove the corpse from the ice. The cause of his death remains a mystery but one clue came from a strange fold in the left ear. The fold would have been possible only if one assumed that the individual lay on his left side, with his head resting on a somewhat raised, rough hard support,” the researchers said. The weather was probably bad and the man exhausted, they added. “He therefore may have lain down in a small depression, fallen asleep and froze to death.”
opposite: “THE ICEMAN RETURNETH” A cartoon I did in 1993 in London, inspired by the discovery of Otzi, the Iceman, in the Alps in September,1991. 12

A SNAIL’S TALE
“A SNAIL’S TALE” - This was done using coloured inks when I was stationed at Grand Reef Forward Airfield, Rhodesia in 1977. The idea came from our National Service stint going up from 12 to 18 months.....ie: just when you think you’ve crossed that proverbial “road”, something else crops up. I have made a short animated film of the cartoon and can be viewed on U Tube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtRI0aMIYiY&feature=youtu.be

THE VIRUS TRIBUNAL
“THE VIRUS TRIBUNAL” - I drew this in response to a Consumer Tribunal I attended in 2008 after picking up a computer Virus on my USB drive from a public internet cafe which didn’t have proper virus protection on their computers. The virus eventually infected my PC at home so I took them to court and dragged my GEEK friend along as a witness and to explain to the Judge how viruses infect computers. The Judge didn’t “get it“ and I wasn’t compensated. I sent a copy of this cartoon to the Judge afterwards.....hope he appreciated it!!!! 18

“MR & MRS BIMBO” - I used to sometimes spend a week at an old friend’s flat in London in 1979 during my college vacation. Both him and his girlfriend used to smoke cigarettes all night while watching TV and as I was a non-smoker, found it really irritating. At the end of the night’s viewing “Mrs Bimbo” used to spray “airfreshner“ around the room instead of just opening the windows to let in fresh air and get rid of the foul smelling cigarette smoke. I don’t think she would appreciate my cartoon but, hey, you can’t please all the people all the time!!!! Philip Scarrold

IN THE BEGINNING IN THE BEGINNING GOD CREATED THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH. AND THE EARTH WAS WITHOUT FORM AND VOID; GENESIS CHAPTER1
“Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. 4 As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. 5 Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. 8 Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted! 9 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.” Matthew 13 22

LEAF
“ROLLING STONE” and “LEAF” were both done in London in 1977-78 in my attempt to break into the animation industry, as were “IN THE BEGINNING“, “FLAME“, “COKE”, “BREATH OF LIFE” and “BROKEN HEART”. I had them made up into a spiral bound book which I dragged around to animation studios in Soho, London in the hope of getting a job. This was in the days before building a website and sending your url to companies. In the end I didn’t get any animation work so ended up going to West Surrey College of Art and Design for two years and making my own animated film “NIRVANA OR BUST” which can be viewed on UTUBE at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cTxf4GVRg&feature=youtu.be I eventually suceeded in breaking into the animation industry.
