Sen. Farnese Named ‘Environmental Hero’ South Philadelphia State Sen. Larry Farnese has been named an “Environmental Hero.” The Sierra Club and Clean Water Action named Farnese an “Environmental Hero” this week for his support of bills and initiatives that protect the environment. “It is very important that we take very seriously our stewardship of the environment,” said Farnese. “We have a duty to take positive action that protects the environment and preserves it for future generations.” The Senator Farnese received a score of 115%. An historic tree in Southwest Philadelphia will be given a new purpose in life this weekend. Bartram’s Garden, which is America’s oldest botanic garden, will bring public and private organizations together to give new purpose to a 200-year-old Cucumber Magnolia destroyed in a June 2010 storm. The transformation of the felled tree into repurposed lumber will take place at Bartram’s Garden on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 54th & Woodland Avenue.
