After graduation, the group continued on to South Philadelphia HS and remained the closest of friends. US Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Sen. Bob Casey and Congressman Chaka Fattah were in town on Monday as they joined students at an assembly at Furness HS. The political movers and shakers urged student and parents to tell their friends about CHIP, the State health-insurance program for kids. Furness is working with Public Citizens for Children and Youth to make sure all of its students have health-insurance coverage.

South St. Bridge Reopening! Rizzo Remembered Rededication of Mural To Mark Mayor’s 90th Birthday If he was still with us, Francis Lazarro “Frank” Rizzo, Sr. would have been 90 years old on Saturday However, to mark the legend that still lives along the ninth street market corridor, hundreds are expected to pay homage to South Philadelphia’s favorite son at his mural on ninth st at a rededication ceremony on Saturday. The South Street Bridge, which has been closed since Dec. 8, 2008, is scheduled to reopen on Saturday, Nov. 6. The project is to be finished early, and on budget. The bridge will reopen to pedestrian and bicycle traffic at 2 p.m. on the 6th of November, and a reopening ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. according to representatives of City of Philadelphia: New features include wider sidewalks, a mid-block signalized pedestrian/bicycle crossing at the Schuylkill River trail, wider, green-colored bicycle lanes, a reduction in vehicle lanes, relocation of street lights, and traffic-signal adjustments optimized for pedestrian movements and safety.
