Casey: Trade Deficit’s Drop Is Small Comfort US Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), Chairman of the US Congress Joint Economic Committee, released the following statement after yesterday’s announcement from the US Dept. of Commerce that the trade deficit in goods and services decreased to $46.0 billion in February from $52.5 billion the previous month.

“While the narrowing of the trade deficit means that trade was less of a drag on growth in

February, it would be more reassuring if our exports had expanded to a greater degree than they did. Our economy remains vulnerable to the unfair trading practices set in place by China.

Currency manipulation is threatening our trade advantage and harming our American workers.

“The Currency Exchange Rate Oversight Reform Act of 2011 is vital legislation that aims to protect our workers and manufactur-

ers from currency manipulation.

Countries who engage in such detrimental practices should be held accountable. The Senate passed the bill by wide margins and I encourage our House colleagues to follow suit.

“As our nation continues to recover from the recession, lawmakers must make every effort to support our workers and ensure there is an even international playing field.”

Health Dept.: Volunteers, Sign Up For Emergencies The Pennsylvania Dept. of Health is encouraging residents to join the State Emergency Registry of Volunteers in Pennsylvania during “Volunteer Week,” being observed statewide Apr. 15-21.

“Whether making a difference in their own community or traveling elsewhere to help during a disaster, Pennsylvanians are not afraid to put the needs of others before their own,” said Dr. Eli Avila, Secretary of Health. “As we all saw during last year’s devastating floods, we cannot

underestimate the value of volunteerism.”

Gov. Tom Corbett proclaimed Volunteer Week to honor the many acts of volunteerism performed every day by Pennsylvanians. The proclamation praised the State Emergency Registry of Volunteers in Pennsylvania, also known as SERVPA. Coordinated by the Department of Health, SERVPA is a secure, statewide database of registered, pre-credentialed volunteers who can be called upon during major

disasters or public health emergencies. Approximately 10,500 medical and non-medical volunteers are currently registered.

The ultimate goal of SERVPA is to engage volunteers in local emergency service and respond to requests for emergency assistance from other states. It was established in response to a federal order to enhance the nation’s disaster-response capability.

Daily Waffles From Joe Sbaraglia (The Waffleman) ALLEYS - are the areas behind row houses used by the fire or police departments in case of emergencies when they required access to the rear of a home. They are also considered a water course for rain water to drain toward the sewer. But they were also used

by almost every kid in South Philadelphia. In order to go from one place to another place, the alleys were used as shortcuts. The alley appeared to make the route shorter, even though it really wasn't. Alleys still exist today, of course, but with crime on the rise, most of

them have been blocked off with locked gates to deter the criminals. These gates also deny the use of the alley to those who used them as shortcuts.

National Volunteer Week was established in 1974.

In an official proclamation, the Governor urged Pennsylvanians to comply with the Dept. of

Health’s request. He wrote, “In special recognition of the importance of volunteers across Pennsylvania, I, Tom Corbett, Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, do hereby proclaim Apr. 15-21, 2012, as Volunteer Week in Pennsylvania. I

strongly encourage all Pennsylvanians to help me honor and thank our remarkable volunteers for their many achievements and generosity.”

Controller Audits Intermediate Unit 26 City Controller Alan Butkovitz today released the FY2010 audit of the Philadelphia Intermediate Unit No. 26.

The audit reviews the Intermedi-

ate Unit’s Transportation Fiscal Report and Final Expenditure Report Special Educate Core Programs for FY2010 pursuant to the requirements of the Dept. of Education of the Common-

wealth of Pennsylvania.

Collins Responds To New Legislative Map Dan Collins, candidate for the 172nd Dist., responded to the new district map: “”Once again, the citizens of Mayfair are being disenfranchised. This is the fourth time Kevin Boyle has tried to get me out of the race. The voices of the people will be heard, regardless of the political games Kevin Boyle is playing.”

Collins ran for this seat in 2010, when his nominating petitions we unsuccessfully challenged by Boyle. When the new legisla-

tive- district maps were approved by the State House earlier this year, both Collins and Mayfair were removed from Boyle’s district. When this map was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, Dan Collins filed petitions to run again. Once again, Kevin Boyle sued to keep Dan Collins off of the ballot and lost.

Yesterday’s map removes Dan Collins from the 172nd Dist. and again disenfranchises the neigh-

borhood of Mayfair by splitting it into two districts as well as moving Boyle into Montgomery Co. Collins continues, “My main concern is what exactly Kevin Boyle has against the people of Mayfair. However, it seems there is a personal issue from Mr. Boyle, too. I’m not sure why Kevin Boyle is so afraid of me, but he sees me as a threat.”
