Casey Touts Education Bill As Overhaul Of NCLB US Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) last night joined a bipartisan group of Senators in voting for the first comprehensive bill in a decade to overhaul the Elementary & Secondary Education Act, commonly known as No Child Left Behind.

Safe Schools Improvement Act that requires school districts receiving designated funding to implement student conduct policies prohibiting bullying and harassment. Casey was deeply disappointed the policies in the bill’s Successful, Safe and Healthy Students program do not include protections for bullying based on race, color, national origin, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender identify, or religion, however. He will work to add these protections to ESEA when it comes to the Senate floor.

“There is no question more work needs to be done but this is a significant step towards fixing some of the major problems with No Child Left Behind,” said the Senator. “I am pleased members of the committee worked together to put our differences aside and do what is best for children and the future of our country.” The Elementary and Secondary Education Reauthorization Act will: The bill was passed out of the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee in a bipartisan vote of 15 Fix the one-size-fits-all approach created by the No to 7 and now heads to the full Senate for consideration. Tom Smith … can you say “top tier”? new affiliation with Drexel will undoubtedly allow us to grow to the next level. By partnering with Drexel, the Academy will be able to grow and prosper into our third century, enhancing our programs of scientific research and education with our combined resources.”

Drexel’s new department will accept its first students in the fall of 2012 and bring Academy and Drexel scientists together with a focus on the natural and environmental sciences.

The Academy, which will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2012, is a world leader in biodiversity and environmental research. Its collection of more than 17 million biological specimens includes Thomas Jefferson’s personal fossil collection; birds gathered and identified by John James Audubon; Hadrosaurus foulkii, the first dinosaur skeleton ever mounted for display; and plants from the Lewis & Clark expedition. The institution’s Ewell Sale Stewart Library and Archives is one of the most important natural-history libraries in the Americas, with approximately 250,000 volumes, some dating to the 16th century.

“The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University will further establish Philadelphia, the birthplace of American science, as a city central to the advancement of the natural and environmental sciences,” Nutter said. “This unique academic affiliation between two of Philadelphia’s most-respected research institutions also will serve as a model for similar partnerships that can be formed between not-for-profit organizations and academic institutions for the benefit of both.” Benefits of this new affiliation will be vast, including the enhancement Gephart said, “The Academy has of exhibits, the opportunity to work long been at the forefront of scienwith Drexel educators to improve tific research and education, and our programming for students of all

The Academy’s exhibits and public programs teams are already collaborating with Drexel’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design to develop new ways for visitors to access the Academy’s rich resources, from a smartphone app to new, media-rich exhibits. The Pew Charitable Trusts has pledged a $1 million grant to support exploring how best to leverage the assets of both organizations. Founded in 1812, the Academy of Natural Sciences is America’s oldest natural history museum and a world leader in biodiversity and environmental research. Founded in 1891, Drexel is the nation’s 14thlargest private university and is ranked second among national universities in the US News list of “Upand-Comers.” Drexel is widely recognized for its focus on experiential learning through its cooperative education program, technology and use-inspired research.

Reynolds Brown, Tasco To Announce New Professional Association For Housing In an effort to provide housing practitioners with increased industry related training and expertise, Philadelphia Councilwomen Blondell Reynolds Brown and Marian B. Tasco will co-host a news conference announcing the American Society of Certified Housing Executives, an organization created to broaden the scope of information, education, services and resources available to housing professionals. The event took place this morning on La Salle University’s campus. Today’s housing industry demands that professionals have a solid understanding of technical real-estate principles, knowledge of the mortgage industry, and the ability to provide credit, debt, and money-management advice to consumers. ASCHE will provide support services that help professionals improve their career growth and development, while also promoting the standards and code of ethics to its members. Programs will particularly prepare professionals to help consumers avoid foreclosure and the pitfalls of predatory lending. It is fitting that this initiative comes out of Philadelphia, as both the city and state have been at the forefront of housing-related issues for over four decades.

education for housing counselors, ASCHE provides courses to directors, managers, and administrators who also need practical training and education in administering these programs. It will provide a long list of benefits to its members, including: national conferences; networking and scholarship opportunities; access to information for career growth; valuable everyday tools and resources such as links to relevant websites, policy, and research; up-to-date housing related news and information; discounts and access to supplemental healthcare benefits, professional, and personal insurance; and vital financial services that housing professionals need in order to fulfill daily functions.

“There is a staggering need to provide additional training, certification, and standardization in housing counseling practices throughout Philadelphia, and recent reports are showing that,” said ASCHE President Michelle W. Lewis. “It is even clearer that counselors also need support. Philadelphia counselors are among the best in the nation, so if there is a need here, there’s a larger problem that exists around the country. That is why ASCHE was formed.” ASCHE has adopted the National Industry Standards for HomeownDespite diminishing financial reership Education and Counseling sources available to housing counand adheres to the National Industry selors and agencies from the city, Code Ethics and Conduct for state, and federal government, Homeownership Professionals.
