Toomey Joins Nat’l Guard Caucus US Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) announced he has proudly joined the Senate National Guard Caucus, joining his Senate colleagues in advancing the needs of our country’s National Guard men and women.

In Pennsylvania specifically, the National Guard has a strong presence. The Pennsylvania National Guard’s 19,000 Air and Army Guard members have had more than 25,000 individual deployments since Sep. 11, making it one of the largest and most-deployed Guard forces in the nation. The Pennsylvania National Guard currently has more than 600 soldiers and airmen serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and supporting NATO operations in Libya, as well as many other locations around the world.

“We appreciate Sen. Toomey’s interest in joining the National Guard Caucus of the US Senate,” said Maj.

Youngblood Pushes Property-Tax Funding Although Pennsylvania residents have seen more than $2 billion in property-tax relief from casino gaming, State Rep. Rosita C. Youngblood said additional funding that would be used to reduce property taxes could be hindered if the General Assembly fails to act immediately to accelerate repayment of loans taken out of the Property Tax Relief Reserve Fund.

Youngblood said the loans, totaling nearly $64 million, were issued to help fund the initial costs of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board when slot machine gaming first came to Pennsylvania. She added the General Assembly’s intent, when issuing the loans, was to require the industry to repay the loans, and require the Board to devise a repayment plan once a sufficient number of casinos were operational and generating slot-machine revenue.

Since Pennsylvania currently has only 10 operating slot-machine facilities, Youngblood said there is some concern about the financial risk of waiting until the 11th facility comes online before requiring loan repayment.

Opera Co.’s Phaedra Closes Season With A New Greek Mythological Romance Henze, the opera’s composer, has had a career featuring considerably varied output. Sung in German, the hour-and-a-half opera will be performed at the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater on Wednesday, Jun. 8 (7:30 p.m.), Friday, Jun. 10 (8 p.m.) and Sunday, Jun. 12 (2:30 p.m.).

In the Greek myth on which the opera is based, the title character is the wife of Theseus, the Athenian king who vanquished the dreaded Minotaur. The main source of the opera’s drama is Phaedra’s development of an obsessive, unrequited and forbidden love for her stepson Hippolytus. This inserts her into a tragic battle for his affections between feuding goddesses Aphrodite and Artemis.
