Sen. Williams, Gilliams Give Out 600 Turkeys

HUNDREDS wait in line that moved quickly to receive a turkey from District office of State Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams. More than 600 families received turkeys in time for Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanks to the efforts of State Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams (D-W. Phila.), area businessman T.L. Gilliams, Brown’s Family ShopRite and a small army of volunteers, nearly 600 local families will enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. After calling in advance to reserve turkeys, hundreds recently lined up and waited in the November chill to pick them up at the senator’s Southwest Philadelphia district office.

“Hunger is a widespread and growing problem exacerbated by the recession and a persistently high unemployment rate,” said Williams. “This is evident by the overwhelming number of people requesting turkeys this year as compared to previous years.”

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation the cost of a traditional Thanksgiving meal for 10 will average $43.47 this year.

While some may view the cost as nominal, for a growing number of people like Delores Wiley, a young mother of four from South Philadelphia, who fights daily to provide for her children, the cost is prohibitive. “Getting this turkey means a lot to me and my kids,” said Wiley. “I have no income or money right now, so this turkey will help a lot.”

Wiley is not alone. Last week, the US Dept. of Agriculture reported nearly 1 in 6 American households don’t have access to the food needed to sustain them, the highest tally since it started this measurement more than a decade ago, so the need for more assistance is increasing.

Williams was able to expand the turkey giveaway this year with the philanthropic support of T.L. Gilliams, who purchased the turkeys. Gilliams heads a private commodities trading firm. Brown’s Family ShopRite provided the turkeys at cost – and donated an additional 100.

ices, information and education to children and families across Greater Philadelphia. Williams is a key partner in that charitable event.

Toy drives, celebrity bowling, concerts and free meals are among the highlights of the festivities, set to kick off Dec. 17. Hip-hop mogul and entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs will host the weekend’s signature black-tie gala, which will feature an assortment of area movers-and-shakers and draw attention to the rising crisis of homelessness and hunger.

Eagles’ Vick Gets PLBC Blessings Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus chairman, State Rep. Ronald G. Waters (D-W. Phila.) said his caucus members commend Philadelphia Eagles player Michael Vick for his rise to the top ranked quarterback in the NFL. This comes weeks after the caucus publicly supported the Philadelphia Eagles’ decision to make Vick their starting quarterback in spite of his previous involvement with a dogfighting operation.

“Michael Vick is now the numberone quarterback, and the only starting quarterback who hasn’t thrown an interception,” Waters said. “A few weeks ago, I spoke about the time to forgive, and a man who had 23 NOVEMBER, 2010

made such great strides to win back his credibility. Now he outdid himself and went from number three to number one among starting quarterbacks.”

PLBC member State Sen. Shirley Kitchen (D-N. Phila.) said there is a time to forgive and give a person a second chance. “Michael Vick is a perfect example of what people can get from a second chance.

More people are benefiting through jobs and general support based on Vick’s second chance.”
