Dem House Leaders Say Senate’s New Fiscal Office Is Unconstitutional ouse Majority Leader Todd Eachus (D-Luzerne) and House Appropriations Chair Dwight Evans (D-Phila.) said Friday the Senate’s addition of language creating a new legislative fiscal office to pension reform bill HB 2497 renders it unconstitutional, violating the single-subject clause.

Evans said that although pension reform remains a necessity for the State, he does not want to jeopard-

ize it by passing a bill that would almost certainly end up in court.

Evans added, however, including an entirely new agency in the legislation is cause for concern. He challenged Republicans, who ran on a platform of cutting spending, for proposing to create a new agency with a price tag of $4 million. “It’s strange in this environment that they would want to create this brand new agency,” he remarked.

Green Party’s Giordano Thanks Friends For Historic Race ugh Giordano made history Nov. 2, by earning more than 20% of the vote in an election for Pennsylvania State House of Representatives.

It was the biggest vote total received by a third-party legislative candidate in a lifetime.

Giordano ran a vigorous campaign in the 194th Dist. His campaign focused upon an end to corruption in Harrisburg, workers’ right to organize a union, single-payer health care for all, and a moratorium on “fracking” for gas in the Marcellus Shale.

traction, voters supported a Green Party candidate for the first time, and they are eager for the opportunity to do it again.”

To his supporters following the election, Giordano said, “Thank you to all the thousands of citizens who opened up their mind and didn’t just vote the straight corporate ticket. I earned every single one of your votes on Tuesday because you actively had to look for my name and push that button. I did not ride on other politicians’ coattails or run with a huge corporate party.”

“Hugh is young and energetic,” said Kane, “and we can be sure this won’t be the last time the voters hear from him.”

Old City Becomes Again A ‘Green Country Town’ ld City District partnered with Old City Civic Association and the National Park Service to begin a tree-planting project on Friday. Seventy new trees were brought to Old City.

This tree planting project supports OCD’s ongoing mission of streetscape improvement and beautification in one of Philadelphia’s Historic Districts.

“We’re pleased to be a part of this greening project in Old City,” said Michael Mattioni, Chairman of Old City District’s Board of Directors. “It adds to the charm of our beautiful historic neighborhood, helping to maintain it as a desirable location for our visitors, residents and local businesspeople alike.”

Various species of trees, selected for their durability in an urban environment, will be planted – all in existing tree-pit locations. The planting project will be supported by an annual maintenance contract with a professional landscape company, to ensure the growth of the newly planted trees in their critical early stages.

Jewish Film Festival Honored By Legislature

BONNIE SQUIRES, long-time vice-chair of the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival, and co-chair of its 30th anniversary celebration, receives a citation from State Rep. Jim Roebuck, chairman of Penna. House Education Committee, on behalf of State House. Roebuck also served on the Honorary Committee for celebration at Gershman Y, along with State Rep. Babette Josephs, Gov. Ed Rendell, Senator Bob Casey, Mayor Michael Nutter, Congressman Bob Brady and other VIPs. Roebuck has often been involved with festival, especially when Squires had booked Scottsboro: A Tragedy, for Young Filmmakers Festival which she also chaired. Film premiere featured an appearance by local filmmaker Barak Goldman, whose film went on to be nominated for an Academy Award.
