“In an election year characterized by a Democratic enthusiasm gap and despite being significantly outspent, Joe Sestak has defied the conventional wisdom and erased the gap with his rival,” Richard claimed this morning. “With a 1.2 million Democratic voter registration advantage and enthusiasm building on our side, Joe Sestak is well-positioned to be the next US Senator from Pennsylvania.

The campaign director touted his aggressive “Get-Out-The-Vote” (GOTV) effort. The Sestak effort has 25 offices statewide, with hundreds of staging areas. It has made 30,000 phone calls a day, seven days a week. It has distributed 20,000 pieces of literature every day. More than 20,000 volunteers have been mobilized.

Although most polls have shown Sestak’s rival, Republican Pat Toomey, with a single-digit lead, the Sestak camp described late numbers as a “statistical dead heat, including many surveys with extremely high Republican sampling that is very atypical of Pennsylvania.” Richard said this “reflects increasing voter awareness about Congressman Toomey’s record of extremism.” Richard cited Joe Sestak’s 18 newspaper endorsements as a sign of deeper support than polls show.

“Over the weekend, the campaign made over 240,000 phone calls and voter contacts,” Richard continued.

“We have distributed well over 400,000 pieces of literature doorto-door in Philadelphia alone.

“We have also raised more money online than any other Democratic candidate on Act Blue, with 44,000 donors and an average contribution of $86,” Richard boasted.

As Fox 29 reported from a Toomey event today: “...not a lot of excitement in there, some balloons, some red and white pompoms, but not super-excited for a guy who could be the most powerful person in the state and the guy who could be the next Senator. Sierra Club Names Sen. Farnese An ‘Environmental Hero’ ierra Club and Clean Water Action have named State Sen. Larry Farnese an “Environmental Hero” for his support of bills and initiatives that protect the environment.

“It is very important that we take very seriously our stewardship of the environment,” said Farnese.

“We have a duty to take positive action that protects the environment and preserves it for future generations.”

Farnese received a score of 115%.

For the first time, legislators received extra points for some nonvoting actions, including co-sponsorship of key bills, or by officially supporting or opposing THE PHILADELPHIA DAILY RECORD

key clean water regulations enacted this year. As a result, Farnese received a score over 100%.

Farnese also voted to support key bills to support the environment, including votes on the severance tax on natural-gas extraction, a moratorium on further gas leasing in State Forests, clean energy policy, and State funding for environmental programs.

The Scorecard rated all current Pennsylvania State legislators for their support for environmental laws and regulations over the past two years. Three other Philadelphia Senators, Vincent Hughes, Shirley Kitchen and LeAnna Washington, received scores of 105%.

he Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation recently distributed more than 20,000 brand-new winter coats to underprivileged children living in the five-county region of Philadelphia via its 2010 Driving Away the Cold program, including a delivery of 4,384 new coats to the West Philadelphia YMCA on Oct. 27.

The West Philadelphia YMCA and other area branches will allocate the coats to members of the surrounding community accordingly.

Developed in January 2008, Driving Away the Cold is a philanthropic initiative started by area auto dealers that has one simple but very important mission: to provide new winter coats to local children living in need so they can remain healthy, attend school regularly and develop strong self-esteem. The initiative involves a special monthlong campaign where participating dealerships pledge an additional brand new winter coat to the effort when a vehicle is sold in September.

Since the program’s inception, the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation and its dealer members have provided more than 56,000 new coats to underprivileged children living in the Greater Philadelphia region.
