SEPTA Brings Silverliners On Line EPTA riders were treated this morning to the first Silverliner V train to be placed in regular service. Train 1062 debuted on Track 0 at Suburban Street Station at 9:20 a.m. this morning.

General Mgr. Joseph Casey, along with rail riders, celebrated the beginning of what SEPTA boasts is a “new era” in service.

The three state-of-the-art cars that make up the train are the first of 120 Silverliner V rail cars SEPTA is adding to its regional-rail fleet.

They were purchased under a $274 million contract with HyundaiRotem USA, which has opened a new facility in South Philadelphia to do fabrication and assembly THE PHILADELPHIA DAILY RECORD

work. The company ships the train shells to Philadelphia from its plant in South Korea.

The Silverliner Vs were designed with the goal of improving the experience of SEPTA’s customers, with amenities such as bright and spacious interiors, large windows and doorways, and LCD screens that display travel information.

SEPTA aims to alleviate overcrowding for riders with the addition of the new cars. In addition, they will usher in a well-deserved retirement for approximately 70 cars that have been in service since the mid-1960s.

The campaign, which utilizes targeted community outreach, the internet, mass media, billboard and public transit advertising, is designed to encourage couples, friends and family members to take the test for HIV/AIDS. The Mazzoni Center, one of several participating partner organizations, will administer free rapid HIV testing to the public and provide resources and referral information immediately following the event.

On Sunday, Oct. 31, the couple also will take their “Test Together” message to six area churches.

Chief Justice Ronald Castille said today because jurists’ compensation must, under the State Constitution, be paid, four new magisterial district judges and two new common pleas judges will be added to the Judiciary payroll despite the unfunded cost and despite the moratorium agreed on with the executive branch.

“Current projections indicate the Judiciary will end this year with a deficit of $17 million,” said Justice Castille. “The deficits represent chronic underfunding of years’ duration. These deficits are beyond anything the Judiciary can ‘save its way out of’.”

“Resolving this and related issues of long-term funding for the Judicial computer system, of State funding to bring County clerks of court and prothonotaries into our statewide management structure, and of diminished pass-through funding for county courts are all topics that require thoughtful action.”

Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced yesterday the City would offer grants to three local businesses developing cutting edge green technologies. This effort, titled the Greenworks Pilot Energy Technology Program, will help the companies conduct real-world pilots of their products, a crucial step toward bringing their products successfully to market. The businesses receiving grants are: BuLogics, a building energy management systems firm, NovaThermal, a maker of innovative heat pumps, and Niche Waste, a manufacturer of sophisticated food waste management systems.

“Turning ideas into products, companies and jobs is one of the most important things we can do to harness the power of the growing clean tech economy,” said the Mayor. “That’s what this is all about – helping Philadelphia businesses bring their concepts to life.

Thoughtful investment strategies are why the region is increasingly seen as a center for the clean tech economy. It’s why the Department of Energy and other federal agencies are investing nearly $130 million to build the Greater Philadelphia Innovation Cluster for Energy Efficient Buildings, and why cutting-edge international firms like the Mark Group are basing their operations in PhiladelTHE PHILADELPHIA DAILY RECORD

The goal of this innovation program, the only one of its kind in the United States, was to find companies whose products had sound technical footing and strong business plans but were still relatively untested. Demonstrating “real world” success by finding a “first user” can be a major barrier to the success of new projects. Therefore, G-PET helped companies find that “first user” by absorbing the cost and risk of adopting the product.

For several of the awards, the “first user” will actually be a public facility, meaning that the City will benefit not only indirectly, from the growth of the companies being supported, but directly, in the form of savings on energy costs on its own bills.

G-PET was developed by the City of Philadelphia and implemented in partnership with the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) and the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Applicants applied online over the summer, and their applications were reviewed by a panel of independent scientists and investors to select those that have the best chance of moving successfully into the market, creating jobs, and advancing the region as a center for the clean tech economy.
