4 Suburban House Races May Hold Statewide Balance statewide political observer has named four close State House contests among 16 that collectively may decide the fate of that chamber. Currently, Democrats hold a slim 4-seat majority in the House.

Writing in the Pennsylvania Independent, Eric Boehm cited the 26th Dist. in Chester Co. as a potential Democrat upset. Challenger Fern Kaufman is taking on incumbent Timothy Hennessey, who was first elected in 1992.

Said Boehm, “Hennessey should hold this District, but keep an eye on it because he only beat Kaufman by 4% in 2008 and direct rematches tend to favor the challenger. The District has a slim Republican advantage of 400 voters.”

Also in Chester Co., Boehm calls the 13th Dist. a tossup. Democrat State Rep. Tom Houghton, who was first elected two years ago, is 27 OCTOBER, 2010

“Houghton beat Lawrence by 1.3% in 2008 and faces a rematch this year, which could be a challenge for him, given anti-incumbency sentiment running as high as it is,” writes Boehm. The District is located in southern Chester Co. and has a 4,000 voter Republican advantage. It was represented by a Republican in every General Assembly since 1970, until Houghton was carried to a narrow victory by the Obama wave in 2008. Additionally, the House Republican Campaign Committee has specifically targeted this District, making this is one of the most likely places for a Republican pickup in 2010.”

he House Democratic Campaign Committee has raised more than $6.6 million in the 2010 election cycle and has more than $1.95 million cash on hand for the campaign’s final push. The committee’s fundraising success is unprecedented and is one of the reasons why independent analysts predict Democrats will retain control of the State House.

“While this is a difficult year for Democrats nationally, here in Pennsylvania Democrats are in a strong position to hold and possibly expand our House majority,” said State Rep. Mike Gerber, the chairman of HDCC. “Our work continues, but it’s good to know we’ve outraised, outspent and outworked our Republican counterparts.”

In the new campaign finance report filed on Oct. 22, HDCC reported it raised $3,284,802.90 from Jun. 8 to Oct. 18 – more than a quarter million dollars more than the House Republican Campaign Committee – and spent $3,749,160.80 – $1.3 million more than HRCC. Since the reporting period closed, HDCC has raised an additional $1.6 million, giving the committee approximately $1.95 million for the final days of the campaign.

Significant contributions were received from the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, House Appropriations Chair Dwight Evans, and Mike Gerber’s own campaign committee. The DLCC is a national group headquartered in Washington, D.C., and Gerber is its treasurer.

“There is a clear difference between Democrats and Republicans in Harrisburg. I hope and expect that on Election Day voters will show faith in our candidates the way donors have shown faith in our committee,” Gerber said.

“With Democrats in control of the House, we can put Pennsylvanians back to work, improve our economy and protect kids, seniors and our environment.”

Buxco GOP Livid Over Democrats’ Mailer R epublican Party of Pennsylvania Spokesman Mike Barley released the following statement regarding a mailer sent out by the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee, with ties to the Patrick Murphy for Congress Campaign.

“The Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee’s Bucks Co. absentee-ballot mailer is deceptive, confusing and fraudulent and now we have additional proof that this scheme was orchestrated by Patrick Murphy’s campaign,” Barley said. “Why else would Patrick Murphy’s campaign manager Tim Persico be listed as one of the two 27 OCTOBER, 2010

This is clearly a scheme developed to benefit the Murphy campaign and it’s time for Patrick Murphy to come clean about his involvement in this matter immediately.

“Additionally, a group of concerned voters in Bucks Co. submitted a complaint to the Board of Elections in Bucks Co. regarding this troubling letter and the scores of rejected absentee ballot requests.

“In the petition, you will find references to affidavits from voters who were the victims of election fraud perpetrated by operatives for the Democratic Party and Patrick Murphy’s campaign in a desperate attempt to save Congressman Murphy’s job. This was a disturbing attempt to deceive and manipulate voters to influence the outcome of an election. The voters need to be made aware of the Murphy campaign’s deceptive activities.”

Casino-Free Philadelphia Demands Foxwoods License Revoked esterday, Casino-Free Philadelphia called on the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to revoke Foxwoods’ casino license for the city.

The anti-gambling lobby organized a call-in to demand the Board take its responsibility seriously and hold Foxwoods accountable.

“Four years after they were awarded the license, after countless delays, excuses, and ‘second chances,’ Foxwoods still hasn’t worked out final plans for construction let alone a final deal for financing. Philadelphia doesn’t need one casino — let alone two.

It’s time for the PGCB revoke Foxwoods’ license and the legislature to remove the second license entirely,” said Lily Cavanagh, Organizing Director for Casino-Free Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, in SugarHouse’s opening week, its revenues were third from the bottom for the entire state, dropping more than $850,000 in the second week and retreating another $25,000 in the third. The poor performance testifies against building another casino.

“This is a case of outrageously obvious political favoritism. Different rules apply for friends of the governor and big campaign donors.
