by Bonnie Squires hen nearly 20,000 Philadelphia-area residents swarm a park in Germantown on a gloriously summer-like day to attend a Vote 2010 Rally with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, you have to be reminded of the excitement when Obama held a similar outdoor rally at 52nd & Chestnut Streets when he was running for the presidency. There was the same feeling of excitement and expectancy, despite the dire predictions of talking heads on cable television stations.

official Phillies uniform to rev up the crowd. Hopefully for his Party, his Phillies shirt, which presaged the Phillies’ big win over Cincinnati, will also be a prediction of a big Democratic win for all the candidates who appeared on the giant stage.

Brady credited Congressman Chaka Fattah with having arranged the joint appearance of Obama and Biden in Philadelphia. A brief concert by the Roots, a Philadelphiabased band, kept the crowd interested and involved while waiting for the President to appear.

members wearing t-shirts from the Sheet Metal Workers, the Roofers, the Sprinklerfitters, and others who were too far away in the crowd for me to read their union label.

Spotted in the stands next to the stage were District Attorney Seth Williams, also in a Phillies uniform; Councilmen Bill Green and Curtis Jones; and a parade of members of City Council.

When Vice President Biden appeared, he got a huge round of applause. Then he donned a pair of sunglasses and spoke until he got word the President had arrived.

Obama flashed his trademark smile as he crossed the stage in front a giant American flag, and the crowd went wild. The Democratic Party finally seems to have gotten some discipline, with all of the leadership putting out the same message: Republicans are against everything but offer nothing in return.

AFL-CIO Launches Massive Penna. Mail Blitz ow in its fifth week, the mail from the labor movement to union households continues to grow as indicators show key races tightening as jobs and trade messages begin to take root.

This week in Pennsylvania, three pieces of mail in support of Joe Sestak for United States Senate will find their way into the mailboxes of union households, union retirees and

the homes of Working America members, the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO in the Commonwealth with 400,000-plus workers who do not have the benefit of a union at their workplace. security trust funds with his friends on Wall Street. Working America and the AFL-CIO are using their postage to remind voters about Pat Toomey’s support of tax breaks for outsourcers and trade policies that kill jobs in America.

In the Pennsylvania Governor’s race, for the second week in a row, organized labor is stepping up for Dan Onorato. This week’s mail compares Corbett and Onorato on jobs, benefits and workers rights. The mail takes Corbett to task for favoring corporate tax cuts, fighting job-creation legislation and opposing workers’ right to strike.

In the congressional mailings, the primary target is the universal opposition of Republican candidates to end tax breaks for companies that outsource jobs. Republican support for privatizing Social Security is also highlighted. This week’s Congressional mail is headed for Districts 3, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 12.

Insider Pub Names Perzel’s Seat ‘Most Likely To Change Hands’ he Harrisburg political insider publication Capitolwire recently published an article called, “OFF THE FLOOR: A look at the GOP Attacks-Democrats Defend House Cycle.” The article ranks the most competitive House races in the state. In its rankings, the number one ranked seat likely to change hands is the 172nd House Dist., the seat currently held by disgraced former Speaker John Perzel.

Perzel is being challenged by Democrat Kevin Boyle. The article cited Perzel’s recent arrest and pending trial, along with Boyle’s work ethic, as the factors that will flip the seat. The article stated, 11 OCTOBER, 2010

“Now, with a well-funded, hardworking opponent, [Perzel’s] era is very possibly over . . . the District has a voting performance [that] is ever more Democratic,” and, “A lot of voters mostly know about the last four miserable, scandal-ridden, ending-in-indictment years of Perzel’s tenure”. It concluded Perzel may have “sufficient juice” to win reelection, but “probably not.”

Judge Restrains Mayor From Cutting Paramedics From Firefighters ommon Pleas Judge Paul Panepinto issued a temporary restraining order against Mayor Michael Nutter and the City of Philadelphia, to prevent the Administration from “implementing any changes to the terms and conditions of employment of the Fire Service Paramedics,” pending a hearing on Wednesday.

Judge Panepinto issued the restraining order on Friday pending completion of a ULP matter.

City Solicitor Shelley Smith immediately responded, saying, “We understand that the paramedics employed by the City

have concerns about the consequences of the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board’s order that they are not within the IAFF Local 22 bargaining unit.

A process had begun to sort through the issues resulting from that order. In fact, we had reached an agreement with IAFF Local 22 on some of the issues, which makes this action today much more perplexing.

However, we believe that when the Common Pleas Court has an opportunity to hear from the City, the Court will realize that injunctive relief is inappropriate.”

Big Guns Vow To Keep Cobbs Creek Pk. Spiffy And Safe ayor Michael A. Nutter, Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Ross, and Parks & Recreation Commissioner Michael DiBerardinis have announced their plans to work with community leaders and community partners to keep Cobbs Creek Park safe, clean and ready to use. On Saturday, they kicked off a series of community-led programs which will demonstrate the City’s strong commitment to partnering with community stakeholders to help maintain and enhance parks and recreation facilities as sources of fun and learning for all.

Partners in this initiative include Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, Councilman Curtis Jones, The Philadelphia Water Dept., the Darby Cobbs Watershed Partnership and the Pennsylvania Environmental Center.

“As we partnered with the community around the merger of Fairmount Park and the Department of Recreation, we heard a lot of excitement and support around the new Department of Parks and Recreation,” said DiBerardinis.

“But we also clearly heard that as we strive for a better future, we also need to continue our focus on our day-to-day responsibilities.

This includes maintaining parks and recreation facilities which are safe, clean, and ready to use while caring for the environment and promoting programs for all Philadelphians.”

After a brief ceremony announcing the City’s commitment to Cobbs Creek Park the Mayor and Parks and Recreation staff led elementary school students and their parents on a tour of Cobbs Creek Park, to highlight the many amenities in the park. The tour began at a Tot Lot situated between the Cobbs Creek Recreation Center and Laura Simms Skate House and ended a half-mile away at the Cobbs Creek Environmental Educational Center.

The Cobbs Creek and its park is a true amenity for the region, offering over 25 parks and recreation facilities just in the city of Philadelphia. In one day, a visitor could play bocce, walk through a natural lands trail, and see a great blue heron or red tail fox in the forest, play a round of golf, roller skate, swim in a recreational center pool, and visit an urban environmental education center.
