homes in the city’s Northwest. In addition, OARC has helped support stormwater management and access to fresh produce by installing rain barrels and planting community vegetable gardens on blocks that have been selected to receive the energy-efficiency retrofits.

OARC capped this year’s work in raising awareness about energy conservation with a visit to Lena Street by Mayor Michael Nutter, who helped to kick off the first block initiative in 2009, which was held on Orland Street in West Oak Lane.

“OARC is pleased to have the opportunity to bring this conservation initiative to the residents of Northwest Philadelphia with the help and support of our great community partners,” said Karyn Conway, OARC’s director of business development and special projects. “We look forward to continuing our efforts next spring with additional blocks as we do our part to help energize our communities around practicing good energy-efficiency and conservation habits that help protect our environment.”

OARC has held similar block initiatives, in which community partners outfit homes with electricity-saving devices, window weatherization kits, and low-flow faucet aerators, in three other locations: Gilbert Street, Clearview Street and Sedgwick Street.

eral goals outlined in the GreenWorks Philadelphia Plan for making Philadelphia “The Greenest City in America.” They include reducing citywide building energy consumption (block energy retrofits); diverting solid waste from landfills (recycling); managing storm water (rain barrels), and bringing local food within 10 minutes of residents (community produce gardens). The day-long event, a signature program in OARC’s five-pillar model of community development, helped educate homeowners about ways they can conserve energy usage and save on utility costs by changing their habits and installing energy efficient devices. “Green(Cont.
