Coe Continues Her Streak

D

ays after being named to the Women’s PGA Cup Team, Joanna Coe of Merion Golf Club became the first two time Women’s Philadelphia PGA Professional Champion.

Despite tough course conditions and tricky greens, Coe fired an impressive even-par round.

Aronimink Golf Club’s Tessa Teachman was close on her trail, finishing only one stroke behind Coe. “I know Donald Ross as an architect and he can be difficult,” said Coe. “It’s usually if you’re above the pin, it’s going to be really difficult up and in; if you’re above the pin putting, it’s going to be lightning. I just kept that in mind the whole time and tried not to get too cute on anything.”

Coe also extended gratitude to her husband Ryan for being so supportive and a terrific dad to their newborn daughter Jenny, and for giving her the opportunity to continue doing what she loves.

nion League Liberty Hill was the beautiful backdrop for the third annual Silvercrest Cup. PGA of America Golf Professional, Anthony Sebastianelli of Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa., took first place with an impressive score of 6-under par. He made a total of eight birdies, including back to back ones on the sixteenth and seventeenth holes, to prevail over Andrew Cornish.

“I hit it pretty well, and putted well today,” Sebastianelli said following his round. “There were times in the round where it could have gotten away from me, but my caddie kept me relaxed. It was difficult with the wind, and the greens were very quick; [Union League Liberty Hill] was a great test of golf today. It means the world to win the $15,000 first-place prize,” continued Sebastianelli. “We are extremely fortunate to have Silvercrest a part of our Section. ac Oakley of Bidermann Golf Club in Wilmington, Del., defeated Dave Pagett of Whitemarsh Valley C.C. in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., 6 and 5 to win the 2024 Philadelphia PGA Match Play Championship on his favorite course, Merion Golf Club’s famed East Course. This is Oakley’s third Match Play victory, having previously won in 2021 at the Steel Club and 2019 at Lookaway Golf Club.

“I love match play,” Oakley expressed. “It takes the anxiety and tension out on each hole; there’s always the next hole. Using momentum to your advantage is important in match play, and I think I did a pretty good job of keeping my momentum going.”

Oakley, who received a first-round bye, survived six rounds of matches against 120 of his fellow PGA Professionals in the season-long format. He bettered Anthony Hoffman, John F. Byrne G.C.; Pat Butkus, Whitford C.C.; Matthew Durham, Merion G.C.; Trevor Bensel, Sandy Run C.C.; and Pagett en route to his victory. This is also his second major champoinship vicotry this year, with his first being the Philadelpia Players Championship .

Oakley made a strong statement on his front nine, carding two eagles, two birdies and no bogies. He held steady on his back nine, making two birdies and only one bogey to propel him to victory.

“This is a signature event for our Section,” Oakley said after his round. “You always want to win one of the big ones.

I’m happy with how I played, and am proud of my round today against the best PGA Professionals in our Section.”

The championship’s presenting partner, Scott and Karen Hutchinson have helped to make the event’s purse one of the Section’s largest, at nearly $29,000, with $5,000 going to the champion.

These professionals earned their spots in the championship by qualifying at the Section’s Senior Philadelphia PGA Championship held at Sandy Run Country Club in June.

t was a stunning day, with clear blue skies and a refreshing breeze, when Aronimink Golf Club hosted the Regional Drive, Chip & Putt Competition. Ninety-six talented young golfers gathered to vie for a coveted spot at Augusta National Golf Club for the Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals in April.

Among the competitors, eight individuals showcased remarkable skill and determination as they qualified for the National Finals, achieving a dream many chased all season long. Perhaps the most challenging division of the day was the boys’ 12-13 age group, where five players had previously competed at Augusta, setting the stage for an exhilarating showdown.

Each division consistently demonstrated that the future of golf is not only bright but increasingly elite with every passing generation.As the sun set on a day filled with excitement and promise, it was clear that the spirit of golf was alive and well in these future champions.
