GA REACH Philadelphia is the 501(c)(3) charitable arm of the Philadelphia PGA Section, one of the PGA of America’s 41 regions, encompassing Eastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, Delaware and parts of Northern Maryland. Founded in 2018, the mission of PGA REACH Philadelphia is to impact communities and enrich lives through the game of golf by supporting and delivering programs that focus on personal development and sportsmanship with an emphasis on three core pillars: Youth, Military and Diversity.

GA REACH Philadelphia’s inaugural launch year has been a tremendous success and I want to extend my deep appreciation to our Board of Directors, officers, PGA Members, partners, sponsors, donors and staff who have helped fuel the many charitable programs that we manage, while positioning the foundation for growth and prosperity in the years to come.

As we look toward the future, we are excited to expand our impact in the communities that we serve through our three core pillars: Youth, Military and Diversity.

Our PGA Professionals and programs provide lifeenhancing values that make a real difference to many individuals and groups that we serve. PGA JR. LEAGUE THRIVING IN DELAWARE VALLEY

P

GA Jr. League, golf 's version of Little League Baseball, serves as a driving force in youth player development across the nation. In 2019, over 60,000 children participated

6

in PGA Jr. League on more than 4,000 teams nationwide, a 20 percent increase over 2018. PGA REACH Philadelphia reported more than 1,800 kids played on over 145 teams in 31 leagues at 86 public, private and First Tee facilities in 2019, including three PGA REACH Philadelphiasponsored teams with 35 youth golfers.

The goal for PGA Jr. League is to introduce children to the game of golf in a social atmosphere.

PGA REACH Philadelphia supports this goal by providing opportunities to those in need of financial assistance. •

GROWING GOLF THROUGH EDUCATION

T

he Philadelphia PGA Section created the Golf in Schools program as part of its continued mission to grow the game of golf. The objective of the program is to introduce kids to the game of golf and the mental and physical health benefits that this lifelong sport provides.

The comprehensive golf curriculum, developed and implemented by PGA Professionals, is designed to teach students through their physcial education classes in school. The program utilizes whole-part coaching, involving a demonstration of the whole skill first, and the breakdown of the skill into parts, so it can be seen, understood, and executed properly by the student.

The program includes five lessons and covers wellness, golf skills, relationships, motor skills and fitness. •

PGA HOPE: HELPING OUR PATRIOTS EVERYWHERE

T

hrough PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere), the PGA of America’s flagship military program, PGA Professionals provide weekly golf clinics to veterans with disabilities in order to enhance their

8

physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. PGA HOPE Philadelphia is one of more than 90 PGA HOPE chapters nationwide. The program offers a free five-six week golf program to veterans, and served approximately 300 veterans in our coummunity in 2019.

PGA REACH Philadelphia has PGA HOPE chapters in Bensalem, Pa., Harrisburg, Pa., Marlton, N.J. In 2020 we will be adding two new chapters in Cape May Court House, N.J., and Middletown, Del. •

SECRETARY'S CUP AT BETHPAGE STATE PARK

P

GA REACH, the charitable foundation of the PGA of America, hosts the annual “Secretary’s Cup,” a spirited 9-hole golf competition for military veterans with disabilities that have graduated from the PGA HOPE program. The fourth Annual

Secretary’s Cup took place on May 13 at Bethpage State Park and served as the kick-off to the 2019 PGA Championship week. Each of

the 12 participating teams in the Secretary’s Cup, represented by the Gateway, Carolinas, New Jersey, Metropolitan, Northern California, Philadelphia and Western New York PGA Sections, consisted of one PGA Professional and four military Veterans living with physical or cognitive challenges, including PTSD, TBI and amputees, among others. THREE STAND-OUTS AWARDED DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

s part of PGA REACH Philadelphia’s Diversity Pillar, the Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour Diversity Scholarship awards scholarships each year for individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate on the elite Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour.

The Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour leads the region in competitive junior golf with over 90 events seasonally, held at many of the area’s top facilities. Membership consists of youth golfers 18 years of age and younger who compete within the Philadelphia PGA Section. The Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour hosts 90 events throughout the season, including four major championships and nationally-ranked events that provide exposure for youth golfers looking to play competitively. With opportunities to learn, grow, and compete many Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour members graduate to

play at the college level and beyond.

“PGA REACH Philadelphia is proud to provide opportunities that will inspire youth in our community by providing a program designed to promote social skills, selfesteem, leadership and athleticism through the game of golf,” said Leila Mackie, PGA REACH Philadelphia Director. “This year’s scholarship winners were selected based on their academic success, passion for the game based on a written essay and references from coaches and teachers.”

n 2019, PGA REACH Philadelphia received a grant for $5,000 from Golf Galaxy in support of their youth programming.

A check was made to PGA REACH Philadelphia during the Section’s Annual Fall Meeting by PGA Members Ryan Carfara and Leigh Taylor, who operate the Golf Galaxy store in Devon, Pa. The donation from Golf Galaxy is part of Dick’s Sporting Goods’ Sports Matter Community Grants Program, which was established in 2018 and has pledged $2.5 million to provide meaningful grants to support youth sports teams, leagues, and programs in local communities throughout the country.

“As Philadelphia PGA Members, Leigh Taylor and I have chosen to gift PGA

REACH Philadelphia a $5,000 grant to support its youth golf programs,” said Ryan Carfara, PGA, Store Manager, Golf Galaxy – Devon. “PGA Jr. League and the Golf in Schools program are part of the youth pillar of PGA REACH Philadelphia.

Our goal is to make the programs accessible to all interested kids. We see this as a great opportunity to support young golfers in our local community through an organization that is near and dear to our hearts.” •

MONTH OF GIVING

GOLF MARATHON HIGHLIGHTS MONTH OF GIVING

P

GA REAC H Philadelphia’s inaugural “Month of Giving” signature fundraising campaign, which took place from October 1-31, 2019, was a tremendous success, as PGA REACH Philadelphia raised over $60,000 in support of its three core pillars: Youth, Military and Diversity.

This year, the annual Golf Marathon 100-Hole Challenge, which was established by PGA Professionals in the Philadelphia Section to raise money for the programs supported

by PGA REACH Philadelphia, coincided with the “Month of Giving” Campaign. Participating PGA Professionals, and all other willing supporters, played 100 holes of golf in one day with one golf ball, and one hole at a time.

Leading the way in support of the Golf Marathon and “Month of Giving” were Lookaway Golf Club PGA Assistant Professionals Michael Little and Laura Schiavo.

Backed by tremendous pledge support from club members and friends, Michael and Laura not only generated substantial donations, but led the entire Philadelphia PGA Section, raising $22,900.

Golf Club was club member Scott Hutchinson, who donated $7,600 to the foundation on behalf of the Philadelphia Assistants Organization Tour Championship.

Among the other top fundraisers who helped generate more than $44,000 from the Golf Marathon, were Alec Brown, PGA, and Eric Keeler, PGA, Gulph Mills Golf Club in King of Prussia, Pa. ($6,300); and Dean Kandle, PGA, St. Davids Golf Club in Wayne, Pa. ($5,050). •
