Emancipet is a nonprofit on a mission to make veterinary care affordable and accessible to all pet families.
Emancipet operates two low-cost veterinary clinics in northeast Philadelphia - one on Adams Avenue, and one on Roosevelt Boulevard which is located inside the PetSmart retail store.
Our experienced team of licensed veterinarians and trained technicians help your pets stay healthy and happy. Our clinics provide access to preventative care office exams, vaccines/shots, spay/neuter surgeries, other surgeries, and more at low and discounted prices.
Healthy Pet Services, such as office exams, vaccines/shots, and diagnosis/treatment of skin and ear conditions are available on a
walk-in basis at both the Adams Avenue and Roosevelt Blvd clinics. Our clinics are open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm.
Spay and neuter and other surgeries are available by appointment only, by calling: 267-774-4901. For a list of services and pricing, please visit: emancipet.org/services
Emancipet is able to offer its low-cost veterinary care services for dogs and cats through the generous support of donors. You can learn more about our mission and story through the voices of our clients, veterinarians and stakeholders in our short film, No Companion Left Behind, available at emancipet.org/documentary.

How to keep your dogs and cats safe in the car
Pets need to be transported in the family car for short trips, such as a veterinary appointment, or longer trips, such as family vacations. Proper car safety ensures that everyone will enjoy the trip.
          Restraint and Positioning
It’s safest to keep pets in the back seat during car travel. A front seat airbag that deploys in a collision can severely harm a pet whether they are in a carrier or not.
There are several ways to reliably restrain a dog or cat in a car. In general, the safest way is in a crate or carrier. However, crates can break or bend during a collision, so it’s important to pick one with high safety ratings. A good resource is the Center For Pet Safety. Other dog restraint devices include harnesses, car seats, or hammocks. These can vary in safety and reliability of tensile strength in straps and buckles. Safety ratings and reviews are helpful when picking a device.
          Temperature Safety
It’s vital to keep a safe temperature during car rides. Pets overheat easily as their fur keeps them well insulated, and they have limited sweat glands. Therefore, it’s important to keep the air conditioner running in warm weather, and they should not ride extensively in direct sunlight. Pets should never be left unattended in a closed car when the temperature outside exceeds 60 degrees. The interior of a car heats up quickly and can be extremely harmful or even fatal to pets. During cold weather the heat should be turned on.
          Planning Ahead
Pre-existing health issues should be taken

into consideration when deciding if a car ride is safe. While a veterinary visit is important for an ill animal, a lengthy car ride can put a sick pet in danger. Frequent stops are helpful for a dog to take a water break and walk around outside to eliminate, and for a cat to be offered water.
          What Not to Do
A pet should not go for a car ride without identification. In the event of an accident, or a door kept open too long, a dog may run away. They should have a collar with ID tag as well as a microchip implanted. Usually a cat will stay in their carrier – so it should be labeled with their information. If a cat is taken out during the ride they should have a collar or harness with ID tag.
A dog should never be able to hang their head out the window during car travel, as they can get injured or fall out of the moving vehicle. Pets should never ride on an owner’s lap. Additionally, a pet should not be fed while the vehicle is moving, as they are at risk of choking.
With proper preparation car rides for dogs and cats can be safe. If an owner is unsure how to proceed, they should contact their veterinarian with questions.

Enrichment Day Care: Doggy Day Care. Reimagined.
At Central Bark we blend socialization, enrichment and exercise to promote a healthy balance of play, learning and rest. We want to share with you why this blend of activities can be crucial for dogs to live healthy and happy lives!

"A tired dog is a good dog". You've likely heard this phrase before, but did you know that it's a bit misleading? There is a fine line when looking at just enough or too much exercise. In part because a dog needs to have energy to make socially healthy choices! When you're overtired after a social event, an intense workout, or a long day of work/travel, inadequate rest means that you're likely less sociable; less likely to seek out social interactions and less tolerant during them. You probably just want some time to chill at home and recover!
To have the best social experience, it's important for dogs to rest throughout the day. Keep in mind it’s healthy for most dogs to get about 12+ hours of sleep each day, with a few more hours spent being awake but inactive or passively engaged (e.g. self-entertaining with toys, self-grooming, observing their environment).
At Central Bark, we have strategically scheduled rest periods throughout the day. This practice is just like nap time for kindergarteners. It fosters appropriate play behaviors, better retention and rehearsal of skills, and healthier bodies. In addition to impacting their social behavior, without adequate rest, dogs, just like people, are more susceptible to physical injury due to decreased coordination and motor control. Our structured rest periods aim to facilitate relaxation and promote positive associations with rest and confinement. That’s why
each dog attending day care receives an enrichment item with a bit of food frozen inside of it. This enrichment item allows dogs to wind down, decreasing heart rate and respiratory rate through the act of licking, which is a self-soothing behavior.
More is not always better! With our small group play model we can prioritize building and practicing useful skills such as recall, sits, stationing, and play pauses, the building blocks for emotionally and socially healthy day care participants. These playgroups are carefully structured, with considerations for the energy level, playstyle, and physical size of each dog in the group, to create the most appropriate social atmosphere possible, prioritizing safety above all else.
Since every dog loves different activities and has the capacity to solve problems and learn tricks, we also have add-on options that stretch their brain, helping to strengthen that powerful organ through dynamic enrichment activities.
Supporting dogs in living their happiest, healthiest lives is our foundation. We delight in seeing new pups blossom into dogs who bound through the front door each week, eager for their day! We require a weekly participation commitment of all our daycare clients. This allows us to get to know every dog’s unique personality, their likes and dislikes, who their best friends are, their favorite games, and their favorite spot to receive petting. By getting to know each dog, we’re not only able to set them up to be successful in our environment, we can also offer tailored recommendations when it comes to grooming, training, and enrichment.

Does your dog REALLY know it’s name?
The foundation of a solid recall (i.e. “Come”) command is for your dog to know and respond to his name. But as owners, we frequently skip an important step. While we start calling the dog by their name, we neglect to do anything to actually add VALUE to their name. So while they may perk their ears up and look at you when you say their name in the house, they completely blow you off when they are out and about in the world and there are far more interesting things going on. Here are some tips on how to make your dog love and respond to their name….
Step 1 – Have a lot of treats handy. While your dog is looking at you, just say their name and give them a treat. Do that many, many, many times. You can easily do this with your dog’s dinner! That bowl full of kibble gives you a great opportunity to do this a hundred times a day. With dog training, it’s all about repetition.
Step 2 – When your dog is facing away from you, say her name. As soon as she turns her head towards you, reward. Again do this many, many times.
Take it outside to your back yard or patio, start over with Step 1. Then move onto Step 2. Remember, dog training is all about repetition. The more times you do this, the better your dog will get.
By the way, while we frequently start with puppies, these same techniques can be used for dogs of any age.

            The Laurels
Pet Center, Cemetery & Aquamation Center
Laurel Hill West Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, PA has proudly served families for nearly two centuries. In June of 2018, Laurel Hill West was pleased to announce the grand opening of The Laurels – Pet Cemetery, Services, and Aquamation Center. The Laurels is a beautifully designed cemetery and service center specially created to honor the memory of pets. The Laurels offers unique pet services, including pet packages, which provides dignified services and a final resting place for pets, as well as Aquamation – a water-based process which is a gentle and environmentally-friendly alternative to flame cremation.
We know your pet has given your family years of joy and unconditional love, so we understand how deeply you love your pet and are honored to serve pets in the same loving, respectful and exceptional way we serve families.
“We are known for providing unrivaled
support for families in memorializing their loved ones, and we’re proud to say that includes their pets,” says Nancy Goldenberg, President and CEO of Laurel Hill Cemeteries and Laurel Hill Funeral Home. “Once again, we are demonstrating our edge by offering highly valuable and innovative services, in a beautiful setting with state-of-the-art technology.”
Conveniently located on the grounds of Laurel Hill West in a distinct area, The Laurels is a private serene sanctuary; a perfect resting place for your special family member. This three-acre landscaped and wooded property includes a walking trail for loved ones to enjoy while visiting and remembering.
You’re there for them – we’re here for you. To learn more about The Laurels Pet Services and Cemetery, visit laurelhillphl.com or call 610-668-9900.

          A Cat Called “Room 8”
A stray cat wandered into a classroom at Elysian Heights Elementary School in 1952. After coming back to the classroom several mornings in a row, the children decided to name him after their room number “Room 8.” He was loved and cared for by the students.
When “Room 8” came back to school after each summer vacation, he suddenly became famous. Newspapers sent reporters and photographers to the school. Television stations told the story of “Room 8.” He was featured in Look Magazine, Cats Mag azine, and the Weekly Reader. His picture was taken every year with the 6th grade graduating class.

“Room 8” never missed a day of school in 16 years until his death in 1968. His estimated age was 22 years. He is buried under a beautiful headstone in the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park in Calabasas, California.
In 1972, Hettie L. Perry founded Room 8 Memorial Cat Foundation and named it after “Room 8” and it is now a cat rescue shelter.

How to Walk a Human — A Dogs Guide

Humans need exercise. If they don’t get it they become “chubby”. It’s up to you to save them.
          • Allow your human to leash themselves to you. This keeps them from wandering off or running away.
          • Your human probably needs breaks. Be considerate and let them stop and sniff often.
          • Bark frequently. Humans have a short attention span.
          • When you need to go to the bathroom, just go… then walk away. If you have trained your human correctly, they will pick it up. Strangely, they seem to enjoy this part.
          • Periodically drag your human as fast as you can. This is called interval training and it will help build their strength and endurance.
          • Do not allow your human to shorten the walk. They are being lazy. Sit in protest if you must… and don’t budge.
          • Once you are home, allow your human to remove their leash, then lick their face many times. This is positive reinforcement for a job well done!

            Greyfriars Bobby
          Edinburgh’s Most Loyal Dog
Over 160 years ago, a wee Skye Terrier was about to become the most famous dog in Scotland’s history.
Bobby, born in 1856, was a Terrier who spent over 14 years guarding the grave of his beloved owner. John – a dedicated nightwatchman for the Edinburgh City Police Force – carried out his duties with his trusty companion night after night. After John’s untimely death in 1858, Bobby refused to leave his master’s grave until the day he died himself.
The rumours about this little dog began to spread far and wide, and Bobby soon had quite the fan base. In 1867, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh presented him with his very own collar. This gesture signified that Bobby was a licensed dog, meaning that he was protected against the new law that had recently been enforced, which stated that all unlicensed dogs would be destroyed.
Bobby passed away in January 1872 and as a final token to his loyalty, was buried

close to his much-loved John, ensuring that the pair’s astonishing bond would never be broken.
The engraving on the headstone reads: Greyfriars Bobby – died 14th January 1872 – aged 16 years – Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all.
A granite fountain with a statue can be found in Edinburgh Scotland – a permanent memorial to this faithful pup. Greyfriars Bobby is one of Edinburgh’s most popular tourist attractions

            Is Your Dog in Pain?
Pets instinctively try to hide pain. A dog’s pain can become evident through physical, behavioral and/or mobility changes. These can be subtle so stay vigilant and never be afraid to tell your vet about anything out of the ordinary.
          Physical Symptoms
When a dog is experiencing pain, you may see subtle physical changes in how they carry their body including:
          • Tight or twitching muscles
          • Shaking or trembling
          • Arched back
          • Holding their head below their shoulders
          • Panting
          Behavioral Changes
A dog in pain tends to behave different than usual. Just like us, dogs tend to be crankier if in pain. Behavioral signs include:
          • Not wanting to be touched
          • Excessive licking and/or vocalization
          • Restlessness
          • Aggression
          • Changes in sleeping habits
          • Mobility Issues
If a dog has sustained an injury or is dealing with arthritis, you may notice mobility changes. Common signs include:
          Limping
          • Walking slower or refusing to walk
          • Reluctance to jump or use stairs
          • Difficulties lying down or rising
How to Help a Dog in Pain
First, get an appointment with your vet. They will perform a physical exam, diagnostic tests including X-rays, blood work or ultrasound.
          Stop or Modify Physical Activities
If your pet only shows signs during an

activity, avoid it until you see your vet. Pain-reducing modifications include:
          • Shorter walks
          • Using a ramp or steps
          • Raising food/water dishes to a more comfortable height
          Keep a Record of Signs
We’ve all been through the scenario, we see certain signs at home, but when we get to the vet, everything looks fine. It can be very helpful to take pictures/video of your pet when they are showing signs of pain or discomfort. Write down when they occur and what your pet was doing.
          Explore All Treatment Options
There are many treatments to eliminate/ reduce acute or chronic pain including:
          • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, opioids, ice or heat packs
          • Surgery or laser therapy
          • Physical rehabilitation and/or chiropractic treatment
          • Regenerative medicine such as stem cell therapy
          • Massage, acupuncture, supplements and herbal therapies
If your pet is injured, ill, or showing multiple or severe signs of pain, don’t hesitate – immediately take them to the emergency hospital. You are your dog’s best health advocate.
