Phillips Brooks School

1994 YEARBOOK Created and compiled by the sixth grade with special editors: Gillian Bostock Doug Carter Julie Cottle Jamie Hiatt Katharine Lo

WE DEDICATE THE 1994 YEARBOOK TO MRS. JORY MRS. JORY has been teaching at PBS for seven years, and will be "graduating" with her first kindergarten class. She has loved teaching with Mrs. Lippert, and especially loves the kindergarten age because the children are so enthusiastic and eager to learn. Mrs. jory has a dog and a cat, and also takes care of the frogs and guinea pigs in the classroom. She holds some magic for frogs as proven by the year that she discovered one day that her three frogs had become only two, but then on the last day of school the disappearing frog reappeared behind the record player! When she leaves P.B.S., Mrs. Jory' hopes to spend more time with her grandchildren and travel with her husband, in addition to pursuing her favorite activities: hiking, swimming, and tennis. Thank you so much, Mrs. jory, for seven wonderful years at Phillips Brooks. Special hugs from the graduating sixth graders who had you first!

SECOND GRADE ■

7 GRAPE

15

This year the second grade is sharing their Jabbenvocky stories. They are based on the original Tabberwockv by Lewis Carroll. They are monster stories, filled with adventure and nonsense words. We hope you have as much fun reading our stories as we did creating them!

JABBERWOCKY Hilar> Pollack A long time in the future, lives Schnoodifloofs, Bongoys, and the worst of the worst, the Jabberwock. It ganners. it schonps. Oh glumpy, he's mean. Snarky, crump! It snoys! Jonky wants to go to Brongfy, she's in ior a surprise! Jonky decides to go to Brongfy, and to see the critters. The Jabberwock, its brain is as big as a grang. Along comes Jonky, she doesn't know its that smart. It's even smarter than Jonky! The Jabberwock climbs a Skittle Tree. It runs at Jonky, Jonky runs home, and never sees the Jabberwock again. And soon the Jabberwock will return remembering Jonky.

THE JABBERWOCK Cameron Murfit One day a boy was just sitting beneath his willow tree. He said to himself. "I'll go get the Jabberwock for my father to see." By and by he met the Jabberwock in the forest eating a piece of plum. The Jabberwock said. "You want me to play don't you?" "No I don't." said the knight. ”1 love dragons.” said the boy. It turned out that the Jabberwock loved children so they lived happily ever after.

JABBERWOCKY Andrew Stim_ A fmy day in the jungle it was. And one day a monster came to town. Afraid the people were. So the town wizard sent for a mighty person. The wizard gave him a sw'ord and said, "Beware for things that will catch >ou. So this mighty person w'ent to w'atch this awTul thing. So he went to the jungle. He got so tired! He took a rest under the pom-pom tree. For a great brainstorm he took. "Ssssss" came slithering through the jungle. He drew his sword! The had a great fight. He fought as hard as he could. Then the might) person chopped off the monster's head! Then he picked it up and dragged it back to the castle... A finy day in the jungle.

THE JABBERWOCKY Lindsay Dillon Once upon a time there was a Jabberwocky He was just a big old monster. And if you went anywhere near his house he would graw and snarl. One day he took a little walk in the Crazy Crama. All of a sudden Elagent Alluvera popped out of the bushes and scared the Jabberwocky. Then the Jabberwocky and Elagent Alluvera walked on. They walked on and on until they got to Scribetog's house. Scribetogs was not there. The Jabberwocky and Elagent Alluvera trideld on. The next thing they knew they were in the Screaming Subjeketed. They jumped out of their skin. They were freaked out at first, but after awhile they weren't so scared. They were soon out of the Screaming Subjeketed and were so happy they went skipping out of the Screaming Subjeketed. All of a sudden they heard a scream. At first they didn't know where it was coming from. They could hear what it was but not where it was. then more, and more, and then the Jabberwocky suddenly found out where it was. So Jabberwocky and Elagent Alluvera ran as fast as they could. Soon they came to a great big castle. Wide open out of the blues they saw a princess. She had golden hair and a sparklev purple gown. And she whispered something they could not make out what it was. But after awhile they found out what it was. She wanted to know what their names were. SO, they told her what their names were. And they all became friends and lived happily ever after.

THE JABRWALKY Nicholas Joy “Halloweeeee,” a jabrwalky walked through a deep, dense jungle. One day a knight came and saw the beast, so he rode back to a big castle. Some days later the jabrwalky saw the knight riding home, and he opened his mouth and snapped and started toward the knighuHe bit into the knight tripping him off his horse and then he swallowed him. Then the beast realized he had been stabbed. The beast hit the ground with a blood-curdling “ Halloweeeee !"And was left to rot.

There once was a Jabber wocky. His enemy Gototoy was his only worin. The Gototoy wanted to kill the Jabberwocky Ird Kiiiiiilllllllll. He knew that was the Gototoy. He ran from Ooooitotiks, to Viniy, to Marok. When he got to the Planet Oomok, froo he got to rest. He sat down by a loook boook. The Booloky was burgr! “Get out of here,” said a little voice, and he did. He went to Gooold, to Irth. There he got mad at all the people.Llltle tet out cion and snooz, and cot, and killed most of the people. But really he was mad at one person. The man he wanted to kill was Zonan. The Jabber-wocky was hung and killed by Zonan.

The boy lozed as he went looking for the Jabberwocky. All of a sudden he spotted him. He colod his head off. When he returned to the castle the king was joyful, very' happy.

THE JABBERWOCKY Matt Seiler Once upon a time there was an animal named Jabberwocky. It lived in Shaboombaba. It was a fierce, big animal. It had bulging red eyes. He was fat. Another Jabberwocky came and ruined Shaboombaba. A prince came to the king of Shaboombaba and asked, "Can I try' and kill the Jabberwocky?" "Ya right," said the king, "nobody can kill the Jabberwocky." So the prince went to try and kill the Jabberwocky. He came and the king was surprised. He was crowned the next king.

MAGELLAN'S LOG by Dylan Alegria May 22,1480 I left Portugal today. Five men stayed on the mainland because they were too afraid. There were about five million speeches, but we finally left. May 24,1480 The weather is ghastly. The waves are so high that water is coming into my cabin. May 25,1480 We have lost sight of land. I think it will be a long journey, but I'm not sure. The seas may be rough, like they are now. "There! Crew! Is that a sperm whale?" May 27,1480 A huge comet just missed one of our boats, and it sent a huge wave onto our ships causing death to thirty people. I don't think we'll make it. December 15,1480 One ship turned around. I still don't think I'll make it. I'm going to get those blokes! January 2,1481 One ship sank, leaving one ship still sailing. I was still angry with the ship that turned around, but I paid my respects to the ones who died. February 29,1481 The sea tis mean y red from blood. A mean looking black cloud hovers over our ship. The air smells of death. February 28,1482 I think we have entered a sea close to land and that is an uncharted island ahead. March 1,1482 We have landed on a new island and are fighting the natives for claim. Men are dying right and left; arrows are flying; guns are firing and fires are burning. Twenty men are left an......

Sir Francis Drakes Log T anuaiy 5, 1570: Tomorrow I leave with the destination of a new land to claim for England. I will attack Spanish ships and bring treasure back to England. My ship is called the Golden Hinde.

January 6, 1570

I have traveled forty-five miles today. For food we

have oranges, dried meat, corn , and berries. We we have been blown five miles off course but have returned back on course.

January 7, 1570

Today we discovered that Leonardo- Lopez is ill with Scarlet fever and he died at 10:00 pm. tonight. The waves are crashing and the stars shine brightly tonight.

I long to see land, the air smells salty and the wind is howling. We have run out of dry cranberries.

April 25, 1570

The rain comes down in great gusts, and the fog is as thick as pea soup. I feel a swell of hope to see land every time I think of the riches which await me. I watch the golden horizon in search of land every day, without luck.

August 17, 1570

W e had a great feast today with steak, turkey, cakes, berries, sauce, and plenty of wine. It made me feel as if I were home again.

September 30, 1570 Sometimes , I wish I had never agreed to come on this mission. We will probably never make i t My men are sick, My fruit is going bad, and today it rained as if it would never stop. How I do miss my wife, Sarah; her golden locks, her shiny red lips and her big bright blue eyes. And my oldest daughter Clara, who's thirteen, Anne who's seven, Charles thirteen months, the twins Abigail and Jonathan. I miss fields of grass and grain. I must wake up to sickly waves every morning. Oh! how I wish I was home!

•l November 13, 1570 To think I will not be able to spend Christmas with my family makes me want to shatter into tears. The weather today was bright and sunny but my heart is not. December 17 , 1570

I might die of grief to think of Christmas without my beautiful wife and the cheery faces of my children. The winds are very cold today, I'm to grieved to say any more.

January 13, 1571 The New Year has arrived. My resolution is to behave in a bold manner during this voyage, to be steady in giving orders, to think before I speak, and to be honest to my new members.

February 22, 1571 Our journey is over. There was a great feast and celebration with hot, tender, juicy , steak and sweet, cranberry sauce, dark butter, and wine

under a starry night.

The Hatchet Curse It is October 31,1993, on a dark night in a haunted house. A skeleton rises out of the moist ground. Meanwhile 2 kids are trick-or-treating along Avy Avenue. One was dressed up as a devil and the other donned an angel costume. When they came to the door of the Haunted House they knocked on the large, creaky, old door. They stood outside shaking, waiting for the door to open. After about 5 minutes, they decided to try to open die door. They found it was unlocked, and went uneasily inside. Inside, there were stairs right in front of them. Spider webs were covering every wall and the stairs. To their left, there lay a coffin. They ran over to the coffin to see what it was like. On the top of it, carved deep into the wood was "Dracula." They laughed and then lumbered up the creaky stairs. They went into the first room on the right. It was a bedroom. Bats flew around screeching and the children ducked, fearing that they would be bitten. There was a bloody hatchet lying on the bed. The devil touched it and started to yell, "It's burning me! Help!" He started to run down the stairs which creaked as he went. His sister followed, asking "What is wrong?" Soon the steps he took were twenty feet long; too long for a hum an. The skeleton watched them as they ran and he cackled with glee. Soon the boy flew into the sky, and was never seen again. The next Halloween, the little girl visited the house again and, sure enough, she touched the hatchet. She flew up into the air, and remained with her brother; two charred skeletons.

The Heart

The heart is really just two pumps and it is one of the toughest muscles I *

The heart has two sides a left and a right side.

no bigger than a cletched fist and it weighes 11 ounces.

The heart is

The heart will pump no matter what.

Then it pumps blood through the

lungs to the body. As you get older your heart starts to slow down.

For example, when you

are 70 years old your heart could pump 77 million gallons of blood, which is enough to fill a skyscraper that is four stories high.

The blood is forced

through the lungs where it deposits carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen.

The

most wonderful thing about the heart is that it goes on beating throughout a lifetime, resting only a fraction of a second after each heart beat.

1770

March 3, 1770 Dear Journal, Alright, I admit it. I’m a Tory in a town of Rebels. “Patriots” is what they call themselves. Patriots to who? Some say they worship Satan himself. Those Rebels are so stingy! They would dishonor the king himself to save themselves a few pence in taxes. The taxes will probably exceed the current ones if America separates from Britian. I can’t even get a decent cup of tea anymore, thanks to the Boston Tea Party. I simply hate that tea replacement Mr. Steven’s widow concocts. Why did the Rebels do this? Why? March 4, 1770 Dear Journal, The townspeople are very tense. Not a single Rebel will even look at me! I can’t buy anything from Rebel stores. Many mobs are going around terrorizing all of the British soldiers. I feel sure that disaster is inescapable on the morrow. March 6, 1770 Dear Journal, The dam finally blew. The townspeople sanity was eroded, and yesterday catastrophe was a storm cloud waiting to burst. In case this journal entry is used as evidence in the British soldiers’ trial, I’ll write just what happened yesterday. I was down at Ms. Steven’s buying some rum, tea, and sugar, when I saw a huge mob appearing on the common. I was curious, so I went over and pushed through the dense crowd to see what was happening. I saw three or four soldiers, British, who had worried looks on their faces. I could feel the hot breath of angry citizens on my neck, and I realized their anger was focused on the soldiers. One of the soldiers had a captain’s insignia on his tunic. All the other were privates. Some of the citizens had muskets, all of which were aimed at the soldiers. All of a sudden, a boy threw a snowball at the soldiers. He must have put a rock in it because it whizzed past the soldiers and hit a citizen (who was holding a musket in his hand). It smacked into his forehead with a sickening thud. He tottered back and fell into the crowd. I couldn’t see him, but I know his gun discharged. Citizens and soldiers decided that that was the order to open fire. Muskets boomed. Rocks were thrown. There were to many rocks to avoid...Smack! The brick hit me on the head, and I fell into the cold, wet grass. Slowly, I was losing consciousness. I felt dizzy, with a sort of falling feeling. The world went black, and my final thought

I

before becoming unconscious was, “Oh well. Death is sweet,” but I wasn t dead. I woke up today with a headache as if I’d been next to a cannon when it went off. My body felt like I’d been lying in the street when we were having a parade. Dully, I realized I was in Ms. Steven’s house. A large, bearded man with bad breath was stooped over me. “What hap....” “Don’t talk,” he said. “You lost a lot of blood when you were hit on the back of the head. Your body was trampled under the mob in the common. For a while, I thought you were dead. I’ve checked your blood pressure, and there s not much I can do. Your chances of living are fifty/fifty. I’m sorry,” he said in his soft, kind voice. I know I’m not going to live. I don’t want to. This is the final entry in my journal but I know something for sure. This may be my life’s ending, but the war is just beginning.

THE SERVANT, THE FOX,

AND THE EAGLE

Once there was a young dreamy servant, who was sent by her boss to find dinner. While the servant was walking to get her hunting gear she was thinking. She was dreaming about what would happen if she cayght a fox. She would use the fur to make a coat, use the meat for dinner, and the boss would be so happy. While the servant was walking down the path to the woods, where she would catch the fox, she continued to imagine the wonderful life that would soon be hers. She would have tea and crumpets with her boss and her friends, the other servants, would serve them. She and her boss could talk about girl things and laugh about their embarrassing moments. While she was dreaming she got deeper and deeper into the woods. All of a sudden, she heard a howl from a fox. She was about to reach for the gun , when an eagle, who had been watching her for a long time, swooped down with a screaming laugh and took the gun away. The fox ran away, happy that he wouldn't become a coat. The servant looked at the eagle with her head low in discouragement. She would never have tea with her boss or do any of the other things she had dreamed about. MORAL: Don't count your chickens before they've hatched. by: Jessica G.

Colonial Medicine

In the 1600’s European settlers started coming to the new land of America. They brought new medical techniques, much different than those of the Native Indian culture. The medical methods and tools they possessed were appalling compared to today’s techniques and equipment. They sometimes did not even know what illness they were treating when they gave prescriptions. Fortunately, the colonists learned some medical remedies from the Indians whose results were better. Surgery in colonial times was considered a craftsman’s job. People thought that the craftsmen were more capable with the use of their hands. The barbers also helped with the surgery. They were considered worthy of the knowledge because they already worked with taking away skin and other things. Bloodletting was a method often used in colonial times. Doctors simply cut open a vein and let the blood run out. People thought it would relieve them of their illness. Actually, all this method did was make the patient drowsy. Barbers performed amputation. They mostly amputated limbs. Quite a number of people had herb gardens. John Welsley thought God made a living herb to cure every illness. Mothers usually mixed medicines in the ‘still room . In midwifery ‘snuff, a kind of pulverized tobacco, was often used. ‘Snuff was inhaled through the nostrils and made the patient sneeze. This helped the baby come out of the mother’s womb. Surgeons used bark, flower petals and leaves to make their potions. Often the doctor’s treatments were worse than the actual ailments. The methods were frequently based on superstitious beliefs. Doctors gave their patients the meat of a walnut if they had a headache. If the patient was having trouble with their kidney’s, they were given a kidney bean. They were given these because they looked alike and it was thought to heal them. In some cases, the patients were put in boiling hot or freezing cold water. ' There are major differences'between medicine practiced in colonial times and modem health care. Most of the methods were primitive by today’s standards and patient mortality was high. Today’s health care is very advanced by comparison.

You Never Know What’s Going To Happen Next “Boom! Bang! Tat! Bang, boom!” the guns of the Lobsterbacks fired at us ^ Bluecoats. Half of us had to stay back because we had to wait for our cannons. “Boom. Bang!” A British cannon ball must have hit one of our tarps. William Frankline is my best chap. I like saying the word chap. I learned chap from an english novel. Suddenly I heard the horns that meant the Lobsterbacks were coming. Willy fell over on the dirt, then jumped up and threw on his cloths, running to the opening of the tarp. Will went out half way. “Bang!” I was not looking at Willy. I did not need to look at Will because a large amount of blood shot into my face. I started scraping the blood from my eyes, but for some reason the blood was very thick on my face. I looked at the opening of the tarp and saw Willy’s body, at least what used to be Willy’s body, but it didn’t have his head. I was sad and scared but I knew I couldn’t cry. After I finished scraping the thick blood from my face I realized Willy’s head was what I was scraping off my face. Jim Scotts ran under our tarp, dragging his leg. He was crying. I bet they will have to slice it off. There was a huge hole in his leg. Jimmy stared at William Frankline for what seemed like a year. “Let’s go, let’s go,” said Jim. I yelled “ You can’t leave him like this, it isn’t right!" “Do you want to die like him?” said Jimmy. “No!” So I ran off with Jim. Suddenly I heard the faint sound of thumping drums. In the distance through the cannon smoke I saw our uniforms and gold brass shimmering in the ray of sun light. I knew it was the British. Behind us I heard the shaking of an earthquake. But it really was the other half of our soldiers. “Bang, bang! I yelled “Come on Jim!” There was no answer. Jimmy was dead on the ground with blood streaming out his head. I knelt over him, not afraid of getting shot and whispered a short prayer. I added “Thank you, God, for having Jimmy save my life by taking me out of the tarp.” I ran to our soldiers and took a horse and rode to the other camp. At the camp I fell asleep. When I awoke I ran out of the tarp. “Bang, bang!” That was the end. Think before you run out of a house or your home, or even a tarp. Just think before you do things.

Sub-Horfal-Blogger-zit By Jason Grauel The world is running desperately low on food and fuel. I Jason Grauel, have been chosen to take my vehicle, the SubHorfal-Blogger-Zit, to the underwater base Alpha Base Three to search for food and fuel. I went so deep in the ocean I had to use liquid oxygen to breath. I was drilling into a colony o f coral, when my ship ran out o f fuel. I was very worried and I was shaking. I had to think o f something fast. I thought I was going to die. I decided to shoot a couple fish with my laser gun. I shot a Marine Hatchet fish, and it exploded giving o f a tremendous amount o f gas! This solved my problem for fuel and could save the worlds fuel shortage. I took aboard four fish but found out that one fish gave o ff enough fuel to fill up my tank. I took three home. Alpha Base One said I was brilliant to have thought o f using the hatchet fish for fuel. N ow , I just have to solve the food problem. I was drilling into a very, very old rock when amazingly, I had made a small tunnel. Suddenly, these chicken-like things started swimming out o f the hole. They were going faster than speed o f sound, and there were at least billion o f them swimming past every second. I was shocked. This went on for almost six hours. These things filled the entire sea. Fisherman started catching them immediately. I was awarded the highest rank for finding food and fuel for the world!

John Blanchette February 2, 1994 Penny Defendants Found Guilty of Minor Charges

_

Los AngelesThe Damian Williams and Henry Watson trial in the Federal Building in downtown L.A. took two weeks, beginning August 19, 1993. Watson was found not guilty of all felonies, including attempted murder, and convicted of one misdemeanor. Williams was convicted of one misdemeanor against Denny. Based on the evidence and testimony, the jury couldn’t prove their guilt on all other counts. Damian Williams was found guilty of second degree robbery and murder, both felonies, and the felony of aggravated mayhem. Henry Watson was found guilty of attempted murder and robbery. Second degree robbery is serious but not as serious as third degree robbery. Experts say the verdicts thus far are a major victory for the defense against what many thought were overwhelming odds because of a 42minute video tape that showed Denny getting beaten very nearly to death. Former police Daryl Gates, who personally arrested Williams, was “Outraged at this one.” But he is pleased with the results. “We know they’re guilty. I understand this system!”

SEA QUEST

One day, Captain Bridger sent five of his men out in a pod. They caught a serious disease, and they had to stay in a holding tank. The people went into the tank to see them. They had to be in a protective suit. Dr. Davidow, Dr. Pifke and Lucas discovered that the disease could be cured, but the antidote would be hard to make quickly. “Oh no! We are entering fresh water. Change the gas tanks to the fresh water tanks!” ordered Captain Bridger. They had to change the tanks because their sub runs on water. If they are in salt water, they have salt water tanks. If they are in fresh water, they change their tanks to fresh water tanks. Later that week, when the antidote had been made, the mad Dr. Hugh came on our boat and stole it. He traveled to his undersea laboratory. Later, Dr. Hugh, the mad doctor, hid the antidote in Mark’s stomach. Mark was a gorilla from one of the doctor’s failed experiments. Later that week Captain Bridger and the doctors traced the prints on their tracer. Then, they slid over to his laboratory and caught Dr. Hugh and Mark. Dr. Hugh would not tell them where he hid the antidote so they asked Mark. The gonlla, “Inside me!” They were astounded. While on the boat they found a chest containing an everlasting food supply, so the world was saved from hunger.

I want to be a soldier in the army, please select me for three reasons. First, I am obedient. I’m good at following orders. For example, I clean up my room when my parents want me to. Second , I’m strong. I can carry heavy groceries when my parents come home from the store. And third I have lots of experiance. I have shot a gun and I am good at sports. I shoot a gun in the summer and I won a medal on marksmanship. I also am good at sports because I play on a Basket ball team, a Baseball team , a Swim team,a Soccer team, and I like Football and Tennis So select me because I will be all that I can be in the Army! Beating of Reginald Denny On April 30, 1992 in South Central Los Angeles, Reginald Denny, a truck driver, was pulled out of his truck and almost beaten to death. He was kicked in the back, had rocks thrown at him, and had a brick thrown on his head, because people were mad that the police who beat Rodney King were let go. Reginald Denny was driving his truck and stopped at a red light when five people named Antoine Miller, Henry Watson, Damian Williams, Gary Williams, and Anthony Brown, threw rocks in the window. They yanked Denny out and threw him on the ground, kicking, punching him and throwing a brick on his head. After the beating, Reginald Denny was taken to the hospital. He needed surgery on his back, face, neck, and legs. Today his face is perm anently disfigured, but otherwise he is fine. When the rioting was going on in South Central Los Angeles lots of stores were looted, 3,700 fires were burning, windows were broken, and people were violently expressing their anger about the verdict in the Rodney King trial. In South Central Los Angeles will need to rebuild the stores and buildings that were ruined in the fire. It will take years to finish it all. y/c/cfe

Now many people may not know it, but I almost signed the Declaration o f Independence. They said it was going to change what was going on with the war. W ell, my name is James Woodsborough. It is June 28, 1776. John Hancock has asked me to help draft it. He says there’s going to be a lot of people there. One of the people is Benjamin Franklin, whoever he is. My best friend is Tim Quincy, a Tory, but that doesn’t matter to me. He says he'll take me on a fishing trip to get fish for his father's store. It's July 3, 1776, and I'm sick. I caught pneumonia, but Father says I’ll get better. It's July 6, 1776, I’m better, but I missed the signing of the D eclaration. Tim said that I can come with him tomorrow to fish. Today, I'm going fishing with Tim. I can’t wait because I love to fish, and I like his father's store. It is now July 8, 1776, we went fishing yesterday, the only problem was... Oh, sorry, I shouldn't tell the end of my story before I tell what h a p p en ed . H ere's how it went: We went fishing, and it was really fun. While we waited we would tell stories about our lives to each other. On the way back, we ran into some c o w b o y s asked where the fish was going, 40. " My father's store," said Tim. ” Where's your father’s store?" one cowboy asked. "Near Redding," remarked Tim. The cow boys muttered among themselves and said, ’ I m sorry but we're going to have to execute you" "What!?" exclaimed Tim. "The penalty for giving food to Tories is death." said one of them. "But I'm a Patriot!" I said. "Well then," one of them remarked, "I guess we'll have to let you go." I ran home and the last thing I heard Tim yell was "Traitor!" When I got home I immediately ran up to my mother and said "Mother! They just captured Tim!" She didn’t say anything , but sat there, with her mouth wide open. "You didn't hear?" she finally said. "Tim already got executed." "No!!" I yelled and ran up to my bedroom. I prayed to God and said; " Dear Lord, pleasejforgive me. I should have been there when Tim died. He was right when he said I was a traitor." At that moment I burst into tears, and couldn’t go to sleep, because I cried all night. So even though I helped draft the Declaration of Independence, 1 didn't do anything about what happened. I never did get over my sad feeling about Tim.

was sitting on my bed when I smelled the wheaty ana thick aroma of the porridge. I crawled down the stairs and sat in my chair, made by my dad. When my mommy set the bowl of steaming porridge in front of me I grabbed my spoon and tasted it. "It's hot!" I screamed as it burned my tongue. "It's hot!" my mother cried. "It's hot!" shouted my dad. We decided that we would go on a walk and when we came back the porridge would be cool. My mommy grabbed my stroller and strapped me in. I loyed going on walks through the forest. i O - The sunlight greeted us and we walked happilylilong the path into the forest until our rumbling tummies forced us to turn around. When we reached our house, the door was open! My parents hadn't notice, but I had. I crawled in suspiciously, and there on the floor was my favorite chair broken! I burst into tears. At that point my mommy realized ! there was no porridge in my bowl, and that someone had taken a spoonful from the other two! I burst into tears again because I was so hungry. Mommy told me to take a nap and that when I woke up there would be some nicehot soup. Reluctantly, I crawled up the steps and saw that my parents' beds were L, unmade. I shouted down the stairs, "Mom, you forgot to make your bed." (It ^ sounded more like her voice than mine.) I climbed into my bed and pulled the covers over me. I turned over and to my horror saw a little girl type human creature in my bed! __T "AHHHHH!" I screamed in my baby bear voice. "AHHHHH!" She cried in her human girl voice. She grabbed her things, jumped out the window, and ran away! ^ I wonder why she was so scared of me. Then my mommy replied from downstairs, "Darling, we have to cut your claws, I think they need dipping \

You all have heard about the story Little Red Ridinghood. Well, why does everyone say the wolf was big and bad? Listen closely and I’ll tell you the true story because I am simply the victim of circumstances. A year ago at my house I was watching a football game on my Wolfnovox television, when the telephone rang. I turned around and picked up the receiver," Hello?" "Johnny dear, I was hoping you could come to my house." "Who is this?" "Oh don't be silly, Johnny, it’s your sweet grandma." "Granny! How are you?" "I'm feeling a little light-headed and I have a temperature." "Well then I think I can come. Ill try to be over there by 3:00. Is that all right?" "Sure. Take your time." Immediately I packed up my pigskin bag with some medicine and a couple of desserts and set off on my walk to my grandmother's house. She lives over the river and through the woods so it took a little time to get to her house. When I arrived the door was open and the house was empty. "Oh, no! My grandma has been wolfnapped!" "No I haven't," replied my grandma from next door. "What are you doing in the neighbor's house?" "Oh the sweet lady who lives here said that I could stay till I get better. She even gave me these nice clothes that I'm wearing. You should try them on, they're extremely comfortable and ever so becoming." I thought, "What harm can it do?" And slipped the clothes on, as I am very fond of lace and ribbons. At that exact second a girl with a red hood walked in and screamed at the sight of two wolves in her grandmother's nightgown. A woodcutter nearby heard the scream and said, "He, he. That sounds like Nirvana. He, he, he, he." So as any other music lover he ran toward the noise. Grandma and I thought that this was an opportune time to run for the border. ( Not Taco B ell). . The press said that having a girl scream, two wolves exit, and having a stoned woodcutter arrive looking for Nirvana would make a juicy story but of course they added a little and made the woodcutter look better and ended up with the story of Little Red Ridinghood. So there you have it, the true story or Little Red Ridinghood. I, John Q. Wolf, was obviously just a victim of circumstances.

Unwanted Pumpkin It happened one day in 1924. A lady was getting ready to cut a pumpkin with a huge knife. When she picked up the knife, the pumpkin grew bright. As she lowered the knife it grew even brighter. She trembled with a hideous, erie feeling. In fright she dropped the knife, then suddenly everything was in slow motion, ominous silence filled the room. She couldn't imagine what hideous and hellish creature would come out of the pumpkin if the knife hit it. As the knife dropped it stopped in mid-air then with great speed it sliced the pumpkin open. Out came an eerie, deadly, and bewitched creature. It started to move closer and closer until it was only a few feet away. The lady picked up the knife and threw it at the creature. The knife plunged straight through the creature. He started laughing at her. She kicked at him and threw everything in sight, but it went straight through him. She tried to call 911 but the phone didn’ t work. She yelled as loudly as she could, but that was the last sound she ever made. Darren L.

The Christmas Shawl

Once apon a time there were two beautiful sisters. They lived in an old, small, cabin with their kind , old, gentle.and loving grandmother. It was two weeks before Christmas and the two sisters decided to make a shawl for their grandmother for they loved her very much, but they had no money to buy her anything . At night when their grandmother slept they lit a candle and began to knit with green and red soft yarn. They knit every night for two weeks but they still had nothing to wrap it in. As they walked into town they met a man with a small corsage and a brown box. He asked them if they wanted to buy it.All they had was the older girls bracelet. She gave him the bracelet in exchange. The younger girl thought the box was too plain. 'I will trade my necklace for some paints.'they painted the box and wrapped the shawl in it. They gave the shawl to their grandmother, and it was the best Christmas ever.

The Circus Of Death v c u v i The trapeze slipped to the ground as terrified screams of horror echoed through the red and white striped circus tent. No one could escape the deadly chaos as the canvas around them burned to the ground... One hundred years later all had forgotten about the terrible accident so long ago. A large manor had been built at the site with now only one living occupant. It was owned by a lonely man called Fred Eriks. He despised Halloween and before he knew it the frightening day had crept upon him again. ft was 311 extremely cold night for October and too very silent. His tranquil thoughts were soon interrupted by a loud knocking at the door. Fred was paralyzed with fear. The loud knocking continued and slowly, Fred rose with a quick stab of bravery, and lunged at the thick, wood-framed door. At first the bright full moon blinded him but soon his eyes began to adjust. A heavy figure, partly covered by the eerie shadows of the night, stepped inside, wordless. Fred watched as the being disappeared into a small lump under the plush carpet. Terrified, he raised a chair above his head and prepared to crush the sinister creature that slid closer. With a sharp flick of his wrist the chair came crashing to the floor, missing its target and breaking into pieces. The stranger darted up and into the doorway, letting the moon cast shadows over his face. He signaled for Fred to accompany him into the jet black night and, as if in a trance, Fred blindly followed. The smell of death seemed to ooze from the expression on the man's face. Soon both men stood in front of a small graveyard. The knifing silence felt as if it would cut through him into tiny slices of death. Spider webs were draped in nearly every corner and the odor of decaying bodies could be detected miles away. In the distance Fred could see a circus. He smiled. Fred loved the circus. Suddenly there were screams of horror as the tents went up in flames. Fred gasped and the man beside him laughed, showing burned marks all over is arms. He pulled down his hood and disclosed the painted face of a clown... Fred stepped back in fear as the clown raised his arm and revealed a knife! "AHH!" ■

. Five years later, Fred Eriks had been gone a long time and so were all

traces of the once traveling circus.

Is He the One? A tiny wretched voice groaned, “Is he the one?” “Yes, this is young Einstein.” The two abnormal creatures lurking behind the open window entered noiselessly. Their decaying faces peered over the bed. They lifted the bed and the sleeping child and departed through the wall. When young Einstein awoke he heard voices outside the room. The vast door creaked open. Suddenly three grotesque creatures staggered in over the bed. “Behold, master,’’groaned a ghoulish voice, “young Einstein.” “Yes, I see, he is perfect. I will finally have a worthwhile brain. Set him up in The Brain Exchange Machine.” “I am ready. Turn the machine on!” As the Baron wanted he had young Einstein’s brain. There was only one problem. The hideous creatures and the Baron simply didn’t notice that Einstein was only one year old. So the Baron could hardly speak. The Baron’s new brain took awhile to develope to the level of a rocket scientist. Meanwhile young Einstein flunked math. Doug Carter

Paul Klee was one of the most famous expressionists. He is well known for his painting and graphic designs, in which he uses nature, many faces, music, and shapes. He used very bright colors when he was in Germany, but when he got kicked out, he started to use browns and other dull colors. He used wit and invention in his paintings. He thought that his paintings were dreams. He used pen and ink, oil, chalk, and pencil and did some etchings in 1905-1910. He didn’t know what he was going to draw until he did it. Sometimes his work is very strange, but does catch the eye. Klee trained at the Academy of Fine Art in Munich. Then in 1906 he married pianist Lily Stumpf. During his prime in Germany, Klee loved to watch the theatre, and he made friends with artists like Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Sconberg, Hugo Ball. ' Klee lived from 1879-1940. He died of scleraderma. As a child he lived close to Bern, Switzerland with his Swiss mother and German father. In World War I he fought in the German army ,but in World War II he got kicked out of Germany which made him fall in to a depression and it showed in his color in his paintings . Klee was very involved in the new methods of representing reality showing new possibilities of playing with forms. He used shapes in his paintings to make them eye-catching. I like his painting even though his etchings are very exotic. Roy Whitfield

I am your best bet for President of the Fleer Corporation. You should select me for three reasons. First I am very knowledgeable. Out of my friends I am the expert on baseball cards and know most of the prices. For example, there is a rookie this year named Mike Piazza who is the most valuable card on the market and there are already seventeen different cards of him. He is a catcher for the Dodgers. I told my friend, Roy, about Mike and he started collecting his cards, and Roy made a lot of money from the card's value going up. Second, I am very industrious. I work ten hours a week researching prices for myself and friends. I spend a lot of time and effort learning^ about and organizing baseball cards. Finally, I am organized. I am very orderly and arrange all of my Fleer Ultras in order by number, and every time I get a pack I organize the -7 cards numerically. ^ Vote for me because I am knowledgeable, industrious, and organized 4 and I will be the best President the Fleer Corporation will ever have. £ 1A- C < 5 6 l5 ^ & ~ ~ lS^ 7r~*r *s''

kining Disaster The snow fell lightly to the ground and I was sitting on the ski lift ascending the mountain. The air felt cool and it made my face rosey red. It was just about time to unload, so I gathered my clinging poles and slid onto the thick powdery snow. My skis swish swashed as I zig zagged dow n the mountain. Fluffy powder flew up as I traversed downward. As my skis gradually slowed to a hault, the hill flattened and I decided to ski dow n anther m ountain. I took a deep breath and loaded on the next lift. As I came toward the lifts end , 1 didn't get off the lift. Felt hot and sweaty and my stomach felt twisted inside. I continued around the lift screaming for help. It finally stopped. The whole row of chairs started moving backwards, and I was feeling so embarrassed. The guide lifted me off as my throat gathered up into a knot and tears rolled down my face. I finally skied off and the lift continued around. I was skiing the whole way down the mountain and I was forced to look out tiny openings at the side of my fogged up misty goggles. My arms felt like cooked noodles and my legs kept swaying

“ IS H E T H E O N E ? ”

“ Is he the one?” asked a shrill voice. “Yes,” answered another voice. It sounded as if the speaker had been pinched in the back of the neck. The little boy, Jimmy, who had been sleeping in his bed, was picked up and carried off by something in the night. When the boy awoke the next morning, he felt sharp pains in his side . His head felt like it had been cut open. Someone knocked on his bedroom door. “Yes?” he responded, his voice sounding like a mummy from a thousand years ago. The door opened and his mother walked into his room. Jimmy, his mother said, “are you OK?” As he turned over, his mother started screaming! He stepped out of his bed and looked into the mirror. His face was covered with blood. As he examined the rest of his body, he felt that he had become quite thin. His mother returned with wet compresses and bathed his battered face, soothing him with loving words. The next night there was a third voice. Jimmy was carried off into the night again. But this time he didn’t come back. The next morning, when his mother came into his room, Jimmy didn’t move. She tried to feel his pulse, but Jimmy’s soul had been seized in the night.

It was a hot, hum id, Louisiana night and Peter Elliot in his wraith-like, two-story m ansion stared out the w indow s at the black night. He heard the deathly creak of a cricket, I the hoot of an owl, and the croak of a toad. Then he spied a figure on the comer of his estate. It w as obviously Old Man Addams. He was a nomad, a vagabond, a roamer, a drifter, and Elliot j detested him. The townspeople adored h im He lived w ith a few dogs and cats on the brink of to w n . The children of the tow n loved Addams, and he w ould invite them to his home to see his dogs and cats. Addams approached the house and inquired in his scratchy voice,* Have you seen m y kitten? He is only a baby and likes to sleep indoors.* *No* replied Elliot, ’ I have, not seen your stupid cat, old man." ’ Mr. Elliot, a prosperous m an such as you shouldn't be so cruel to a poor man such as I m e.’ This response enraged Elliot. H e ran upstairs, grabbed his shotgun and shot Addams in ( the forehead. He then dragged Addam s by the heels to his crawl space and buried h im For days the townspeople looked for him and couldn't find and assumed he was dead. The townspeople m ourned for days. Elliot w as afraid. H e knew if the townspeople found out it ^ w ould be the gallows for him. Then one dark night Elliot was in his bed w hen he heard a loud thum ping on the crawl space door. He flew down stairs and saw a huge mound rising in the carpet. The m ound m oved around and knocked over the coffee table. Elliot grasped a wooden chair and beat it over the m ound and the movement ceased. Two weeks later it happened again, \ but this time it was m uch worse. The entire carpet w as up-rooted from the floor. A blinding w hite figure stepped out of the hole in the floor and was chanting,* W here's my kitten?" Elliot pathetically screamed," I don't know, please don't harm me!" Elliot then noticed the figure had a hole in its head the size of a silver dollar. Elliot noticed an odd remembrance of the figure's g h astly, white face. It was Old Man Addams! A ddam s chased him through the sw am ps outside Elliot's house. Rain began to pour from the skies. Elliot felt the mud below his feet caving in , and he fell in a drainage ditch and drow ned in a w atery hell. Addams kept | yelling," W here's my kitten?" As I lowered myself under the water I felt a strong need to breathe. I took my first breath from the regulator. My teeth dug into its rubbery mouth piece. I could taste the drops of salty water leek in through my tight grip. At first I couldn't tell whether I was breathing or not. The cold water rushed into my wet suit. I felt trapped at first, then the feeling of freedom overcame my fear. The first thing I saw was a magnificent fish with all the colors of the rainbow. At seeing this new creature invade its territory, the fish dived into the sand. I eased the air out of my vest. I watched the bubbles ascend through the murky water and dissolve on the surface. We headed for the reef. I glanced at my depth gauge to see how far we had descended. We were only a few feet deep. My jaw began to relax around the regulator's slippery surface. My breaths became tong and deep. I saw fish dart in and out of the cracks in the rock. Their scales brilliantly reflected the sunlight through the water. Roddy Knight

HE HAD WARNED HER ABOUT THE BOOK. NOW IT WAS TOO LATE! The clock struck twelve. Now it was time to leave. She sneaked out of her room, crept downstairs, and slipped out of the house with the book in her arms. She was going to be late meeting him. She headed for the woods. When she was close to the middle of the forest she could see his silouette, and she could see that he had it. Her heart beat faster as she tip-toed through the moon-lit forest. As she walked, she saw his grotesqueface coming closer and closer. The windwas blowing her hair in her face. Finally she reached him. She gave him the book. He looked through it and put the thing in it andgave it back to her. "Now," he said in a gruffy voice, "take good care of it and remember what I wrote on it. Be careful!" Then she turned and started to walk home. When she reached the front door she was exausted. So she staggered up the stairsand climbed into bed. At about four o'clock sne was supposed to do as he wrote, but she was so tired that she was still asleep. The book was right by her and all of a sudden the book opened to the middle. He had warned her about the book. Now it was too late. The following morning her mother called," Margret, it's tim e............ Ahhhhhh!" Brian Mead Somalians Nail U.S. Soldiers in Olympic Hotel Battle On October 3, 1993, U.S. soldiers tried to nab key aides of Somali warlord Mahammad Aidid at the Olympic Hotel, Mogadishu, Somalia. The soldiers landed on the roof of the Olympic Hotel where the meeting was being held. But Somalians were ready, killing 17 and wounding 77. As Richard Lamb put it, “ We went to where the horngts live, and we got stung.” He was one of the lucky soldiers who didn’t die but suffered a shrapnel wedged three-and-a-half inches deep in his forehead. Somalian gunmen let out rapid fire at U.S. heleicopters. From trees and rooftops the bullets kept flying. They shot down the helicopter of Chief W arrant O fficer Michael Durant. Durant was captured and beaten. He was hung with chains and beaten some more. “ In the morning I saw a barrel of a gun...The gunman opend fire and left,” said Duran’ ' ‘ I had to pull out of my a r m.

It Came Back Last time we thought it was gone, but tonight I knew it was back. What it was, I do not know. All I know is that it will kill again. It was around midnight and I was watching t.v. like I usually do every Friday night. But tonight was different, just like the night that it came back, what ever it was. There was a storm and the rain smashed to the ground like huge rocks and the lightning bolts shot across the sky like rockets. The curtains flapped against the walls and the clock ticked every second. The dogs howled and the cats screeching and then I heard something or someone was in the house. I heard claws scrambling around the marble floor in the den. I turned slowly towards the sounds. When I entered the den my dog was on the floor dead! I went to the desk and took out my father’s gun. My hands trembled with fear as I slowly loaded the gun and started to search for the thing. Last time it came it killed my cat and know my fathers is in New York and asked me to look over the house. As I started down the long, dark, hall, I heard something being ripped up and the laugh of a gremlin. I entered the room with the sounds. I saw the thing starring right into my eyes, still laughing. It’s body was like a hair ball with claws like a wolverine, it had blood-red eyes and the sharpest, most jagged teeth I’ve ever seen. I slowly lifted the gun and shot it. L saw green oozing out of it. I suddenly fainted and awoke hours later in a hospital, with my father sitting next to me. He is the only one that believes me, unless you do!
