How Tigers Got Their Stripes

A long time ago tigers had bare orange backs. fell into mischief and got stripes.

One tiger, Tigie,

Let's begin.

One day a tiger named Tigie was wandering around as usual getting into mischief.He liked going to swamps and deserts. to get into an adventure all by himself.

He wanted so, so much

to have a beautiful coat: a coat with beautiful colors(like his favorites - black, white, and orange).

Just then he started walking farther and farther into the forest.

He stopped suddenly, so suddenly that if you were there it would have scared you out of your wits!

He had heard something.

like it at the zoo.

Mr. Snake Learns His Lesson

Once there lived an egret who loved the meadows.

Every

day he would walk up to the meadows by the seashore, and play in the meadows.

One day Sir Egret was playing in the meadows and along came Mr. Snake.

Well Sir Egret did not ;see Mr* Snake, but Mr. Snake

saw Sir Egret.

Finally Mr. Snake bit Sir Egret.

Luckily Peter Rabbit was around.

FONDRUNA Once upon a time there was a beautiful girl named Irina, was long and golden blond.

It flowed beyond her feet.

She wore a sparkling, white, glittery lace dress.

Her skin was a light pale color.

Her blue-green eyes told you a story of the valley.

She was the magic of the valley, Fondruna.

In Fondruna the grass was a bright green.

Not even one spot of dead brown grass lay there.

The sky was a cheerful blue with the sun shining bright all the time.

The sun was a golden color at night and the color of joyful yellow by day.

There were many trees.

All of them were green, the soft green of mint and the proud green of the rainbow.

All of the trunks were a steady color of brown.

Everyone who lived in this valley wore white.

These small creatures were not really people.

They were called Hiphaloons. They looked like people but were a different height.

They were three feet tall.

The only other colors in this valley were on the birds, raccoons, deer, and flowers.

Most of all, the birds and flowers were colorful.

Irina was the one who put the beauty in them.

One day a horrible person came, a devil-like human being.

He had just discovered the valley Fondruna.

His name was Malfu.

He did black magic.

But the Hiphaloons knew that wisdom, love, beauty, and kindness would win any battle against evil.

Malfu wanted to destroy Fondruna.

But Irina wouldn't let him do such a thing to such a wonderful land All of a sudden there was a loud cry that shook Fondruna, and then the sky turned black with clouds.

It was Malfu letting out the evil cry.

He was saying, "DONGEN OF THE LAND, DONGEN IT TO DOOMS!" Fondruna started to crack.

Irina floated into the sky in her ghost-like way, and she just sang in her sweet, kind voice.

The more she sang, the more Fondruna tightened.

Then the Hiphaloons joined in singing, and the more they sang the more the darkness and the clouds faded away.

As they sang, they saw Malfu shrink and he shrank and he shrank.

THE DAY OLD HRS. McCRATG SMASHED MY PUMPKIN! It was a week before Halloween in New York, 1904. ’ The night was misty, foggy and dark. I was home alone in my apartment. T heard a sound as strange as the moan of a dying witch. I looked out the window, but the night was quiet.

Neon lights were reflecting on the fog.

At twelve o'clock I heard another scary sound.

I knew it was my parents.

I spent tha_t night at the baby-sitter's house because the night before I had gotten freaked. I hated the baby-sitter. When'I got home the next morning I went right to bed.

I had a dream that night. It was about spooky old Mrs. McCraig.

She had lived down the street from me. She looked like an old witch.

Two years ago she died and Halloween has never been the same since.

People say that she stole pumpkins and that she still does. But she's dead, so how could she steal pumpkins? Rise from the dead? Ha! Well, I could never let an old lady like Mrs. McCraig ruin my Halloween. That is the best time of the year!

When I woke up the next morning my pumpkin was not a pumpkin . It was like my mom's cooking, orange mush! YUCK! So the next night I stood outside, waiting to catch the criminal. I saw nothing, but I found out all the information I needed. I found out that the cat was re-named Mrs. McCraig, and it was the cat who had jumped on pumpkins.

That is the story of old Mrs. McCraig who turned out to be a real live cat.

My friend Tracy is nine years old. She has soft brown hair which hangs at her shoulders. Her eyes are light brown. On her face are lots of freckles.

Tracy is a friendly and kind person. She is funny, but when meeting new people she is sometimes shy. Tracy likes art and adventures. Her mom has known my mom since seventh grade.

Once we went camping together. On the trip Tracy and I slept in a two-man tent. When we went to bed we slept with our heads each at a different end of the tent, and, in the night when we woke up, we couldn't tell where the flashlight was!!

HOW THE ARMADILLO GOT ITS ARMOR

Once in the far-off times, 0 Best Beloved, there lived an armadillo. But this was not a usual armadillo. He had no armor, just a gooey, gushy, slimy piece of skin. He didn't like it because he had no defense. Lots of animals, especially the panther, ate him because the armadillo was the easiest to catch and eat. Armadillo asked the Great Spirit if he could have a spear, sword, and armor breastplate to cover his body. The Great Spirit said, "You cannot have a spear and sword, but you can have an armor breastplate. You must earn it by working for Panther for one week."

"But," said Armadillo, "Panther likes to eat me!" he whined.

"Anyhow, it is your task," said the Great Spirit.

So Armadillo slumped away. But he knew he had to do just that to get an armor breastplate.

Panther welcomed him warmly because he knew about the task and vowed that it would never happen.

"Hello," said Panther, "you are just in time for dinner."

"Hooray for me!" said Armadillo.

"What's for dinner?"

Panther answered, "Turtle soup, fried rabbit, and..." Panther said with a sly smile, "Roast Armadillo!"

Armadillo shrieked and ran to the other side of the table. Panther chased Armadillo around and around the table and at every turn Panther gained. Armadillo was very scared. Finally Panther stopped and said, "Let's continue this chase tomorrow. Meanwhile, have a seat and eat."

Every day was the same until the last day. Armadillo was running around the table with Panther right behind him. Armadillo was so exhausted that he crashed into the table. All the plates fell on him.

Since his body was slimy, the pieces fell on him and stuck to his skin.

Panther, not knowing that Armadillo had a hard skin now, bit into it and lost a tooth. He howled in pain and ran away to his room. From that day on, Armadillos always have very, very hard shells.

A FRIEND TO KNOW Matt is my best friend. He is always dirty and muddy. Matt has brown hair and is a barefooted kind of guy. He's always funny. There isn't anything he's not interested in. Matt is fun and smart. He's also smarter than I am. His favorite foods are ribs and pizza. He enjoyed fishing and reading a lot.

I remember when Matt went skiing with me and we got into a lot of trouble. We did something we shouldn't have, and we still won't tell you. He was always a better skier than I was. We also took pictures of things that we shouldn't have. I had a great time. I had a lot of fun.

One day he sneaked in the window of King Arthur's castle and took the sword. King Arthur was very mad at Sir Rex for stealing the sword.

He Every knight was blown away except one knight named Sir Rambo rode over the castle, and when Max the dragon opened his mouth, Sir Rambo squirted lots of water in his mouth. When Max opened his mouth, the only thing that came out was steam. Sir Rambo ran through his big, fat, ugly legs and climbed over the castle wall. Then he saw Sir Rex and they had a bloody sword fight. Finally Sir Rex got tired, and Sir Rambo took his sword and smashed the sword right through the armor, and killed Sir Rex. Sir Rambo jumped through the window and ran down the stairs and into the dungeon. He grabbed the Singing Sword and ran out of the castle. When he got back to the king's castle, everybody cheered and they heard the Singing Sword sing. And the.people danced and cheered some more.

A DAY AT MISSION SAN JOSE One hot day at the Mission San Jose, there was a bear and bull fight. I am twelve and my name is Catalina. I am learning to be a vaquera.I was to watch the cattle that day, and the cattle were just eating and sleeping. I fell asleep.

An hour later I woke up and realized half of the cattle were gone.

The Indians had taken them to their village. .

I ran off and gathered three other vaqueros to help me collect the cattle. Ue jumped on our horses and rode to the Indian village. My friend talked to the Indiansp> trying to bribe them.

Finally we offered a horse in trade to the Indians, and they gave the cattle back. After that we rode back to the mission. Someone else watched the cattle for me. We watched the bull and bear fight. k

THE SCARIEST DREAM EVER

It was a cold windy night. The wind was stinging my face like needles. I hate it when that happens. It seemed like in every tree there was a vampire ready to jump out at you.

I was trick-or-treating on a very strange street. On this street there were only mansions. The trees were weird-shaped, with orange and black leaves.

Suddenly there was a scream from one of the old creepy mansions. said to my friend, "Don't you want to go on another street?"

"No, but I want to get off this one and go to your house," said my friend. We ran as fast as we could but the street never seemed to end.

But the Great Spirit was sick and tired of it being so dark! For a whole week he was thinking and thinking and thinking what he could do. Finally it hit him. And I mean it really hit him!

The Great Spirit was just sitting on a cloud when all of a sudden a big hot comet fell and bonked him on the head. The Great Spirit dropped to a lower cloud. He climbed back up and looked at the comet.

An idea popped into his head.

The Great Spirit pointed at the comet. It rose and rose into the sky. All of a sudden it was bright! He was content. The Great Spirit named it "Sun." S for Shining, U for Unending, and N for Nice.

Once in a deep, dark, damp pit, there lived Porcupine, and he had dark brown fur and a white face. Porky was a nice calm porcupine. He never got in a fight. He loved to read and whenever his birthday came he always got a book.

One day he decided to go outside and he saw the house that he wanted to live in very much. It was abandoned. So he went to explore the house and inside he found some shampoo. He brought it back into his hole, d u l he did not know what it was for.

One Jay he was going to take a shower. The shelf above him fell and the shampoo fell on top of Porky. Then suddenly spines grew out of Porky's back.

Ever since that day Porky would go out to hunt instead of reading all day. Every Porcupine after Porky had spines.

HOW CALIFORNIA CAME TO BE One day Grizzly, Coyote, Mountain Lion, and Eagle were walking, said, "Wouldn't it be nice to make more land for us?"

They all said, "Yes," so Grizzly yelled up to the Great Spirit and "Spirit of land, please make more land for us."

Little did they know Coyote had sneaked away and said, "Yes, I am the spirit of the land. You want land? First you have to name the land you want."

So Eagle said, "How 'bout we use letters from our own names and an extra word. We all like the word food." So they thought and thought and thought, and by using their own names plus letters from "food" they all came up with California.

Once upon a time there lived an evil wizard named Tex. He lived^_ many miles away from the kingdom. He was-very evil and mean. He wore a dark robe and carried a magical staff.

One day he ran out of food so he went to town. He was walking past the palace when suddenly the king jumped out of the bushes. The king was very evil, also, so the king hired Tex as palace wizard.

The king had a very powerful magical sword that could do anything.

While the king returned to the palace, Tex had made his way to the village. The villagers hated Tex so they tried to kill him#. But Tex had his power staff and killed fifteen villagers.

Tex decided to cause a flood on the village. So he did. The villagers decided to go to Berklin's castle. Berklin was a great wizard. He helped the villagers by making a more powerful magical sword. Then they attacked the king's castle.

The king's army was very good. other castles on the mountain.

But the villagers had help from

Berklin stood on the mountain with the magical sword. The villagers shot arrows at the castle as Berklin blew it to shreds.

Cannons were shooting from all sides toward the castle. the king's army raised the white flag.

After the villagers searched the wrecked castle, they found Tex's power staff. Tex was never seen again.

A GOOD PERSON TO KNOW My friend is Bill. .He died a few weeks ago because he had lung cancer. He had light gray hair. He was pretty tall and smiled a lot.

He had eyes like the sky. His interests were watching T.V. and playing games with anybody.

Bill had a very good personality. He loved to talk when our family came over for dinner. He laughed a lot for fun. He used to joke around with me.

I really felt comfortable with him around because he was- a great person and I liked him a lot. He was just really fun to be with because he was a very good friend.

One of my experiences with him was watching T.V., any channel. It really didn't matter to him. I talked with him about school and the subjects we have. He was a very nice grandfather and I liked him a lot.

Once upon a time, under the biggest leaves in the jungle, there lived a little elf. This elf was not a regular elf; he was a one-of-akind elf. His name was Leafin. He was grumpy in the morning and happy in the afternoon. He had the rosiest cheeks and a leaf as a hat.

One day, in the morning, Leafin rolled out of bed to do his chores when he heard a little voice. He trudged outside to see who it was. It turned out to be a dark brown squirrel.

"The king and queen are going to chose a new king and queen," chattered the squirrel.

"Oh, they are, are they?" said Leafin, suddenly getting a great idea.

His idea was that he would try to be king. would ask the king to pick him to be king.

So the next day, Leafin

The people laughed and said, "There is no way anyone can do chat."

Then the mad ruler changed them into invisible people. stopped laughing and left.

The ruler said, 0 Best Beloved, "I will make a special potion for you people. Then you will come to me and I will teach you how to use the potion by the next day." The impatient people then said, "Why can't you make the potion by today? We can't take much more of this!"

The ruler was very mad and told them to go home. The next day they came back. The potion was ready for them sitting on a table. Suddenly the ruler showed up and told them to drink the potion. They still saw nothing. Some were mad because they thought it did not work. Then the angry people turned red. Some were scared and sick. The sick people turned yellow and the scared people turned white. The people who were glad turned black.

That is how people came to have different colors.

Once the world was made of mud and water. The Great Spirit said to Eagle whom he had made many years before, "I want you ro down to you to go Earth and bring me som ^ mud." ^

Eagle obeyed and went down to earth. He came back with a mouthful of mud. The first thing he made with the mud was Coyote. Coyote floated with Eagle in the air. The Great Spirit dried the mud and sprinkled it in certain ways. When that was all gone, he sent Coyote down for some water and made trees and other plants. Then he made mountains and rivers. After that he made Indians. And that is how the Earth was finished.

It was a long, hot day and everybody had been working hard at Mission San Carlos. It was just about evening. I had done so much work today. I had done the laundry for my three children, Marina’, Katerina, and Miguel, and my husband Mando. Katerina and Marina splashed in the washing stream while Miguel threw pebbles in the water. I had to take Marina and Katerina home because they were wet and muddy. I also watered the plants. After that I decided to go to the storehouse to trade some fresh meat for some flour so I could make a nice dinner for my husband and children. By the time I got home, it was about time for dinner. For dinner I had to scrape the corn and roll the tortillas up with fresh meat.

A few minutes after I had made dinner, my husband came home from a hard day at work. He was a soldier. He told me, "Three Indians ran away.."

All of a sudden I heard a big blast. Ue all looked outside to see what it was. There I saw the most amazing sight I had ever seen. The candle building was on fire. Everybody was screaming and running away from it. Katerina, Marina, Miguel, and my husband all grabbed me at once. Then my husband ran out to help with the fire. Miguel, who is sixteen, didn't say anything, but he looked worried. Marina, who is ten, began whining, and Katerina, who is only four, began screaming and crying. Since the candle building is not too close to our house, I closed the door so the children wouldn't get too scared.. Finally, when the commotion stopped and everything was quiet, I opened the door to lat he breeze in and to calm the children down. I looked out and saw that the candle building was burned down. Tomorrow it would be repaired.

At North Carolina I had a best friend named Holly. I still remember her clearly. She had sparkling deep blue eyes, and she was tall with the most beautiful brownish blond hair. I don't think she would be Holly if she didn't have all of her freckles! She would be total stranger!

Every day at school we would talk about something funny. Actually even if it wasn't funny we would break down laughing! On bad days 1 would tell her all of my problems, and she would always cheer me up. I never got mad at her, and she never got mad at me.

Every day we would ask each other if we were free after school, If we were and our parents agreed, we would tell my mother or her mother to Q^come late. When it was about time to go home, we would pick the craziest place to hide and we wouldn't come out! In a couple of minutes, we would finally come out. know I will never have a better friend!

SERPENT STAYER'

Once upon a time there was a man called the Serpent Slayer. He always wore a black piece of cloth on his head so no one knew who he was. He fought dragons. He could kill a dragon with his eyes closed.

He wore no armor, just the black piece of cloth. He had a sword made of glistening steel.

The Serpent Slayer sang after he won each match. It went like this: "Well, I kill dragons and I'd like to say, I'm one mean guy in a major way, because I'm the meanest killer you have seen in these days, but I'm a very nice guy as you can see anyway. I live in a castle.

It's really nice. When I eat, I eat by candlelight, so my song is over.

So is the dragon. I won, you all, so please stop clapping."

One day he had a match with a dragon called King Big Teeth, the meanest dragon you have ever seen. The Serpent Slayer was ready for King Big Teeth. He came out with his black cloth on his head. His sword was glistening more than ever. They brought out the dragon. They started to fight. He crawled under the dragon's legs. The dragon turned around. He blew a big ball of fire. The Serpent Slayer blocked it with his sword and it flew back at the dragon. It burned him badly.

He could not see. The Serpent Slayer got his sword in his hand and jumped up with all his might and cut the dragon's stomach. When he got back down, he cut the dragon's legs and it fell to the ground. Then he put his sword right into the dragon's skull.

Just then my alarm went off!

My name is Clara. I live at the San Diego mission. I am the wife of a soldier and the mother of a little girl named Barbara. My job at the mission is to help out at the school. I don't like the job one bit, but if I don't do it I might be punished.

After the church service I walked into the classroom. The children just started reading the Spanish History book. Thirty minutes later the children went out for lunch. I ran to the kitchen to get my lunch.

Today was very hot. I got my lunch and sat down and ate it in the school room.

The next moment I heard lots of screams and yells. I walked out of theclassroom to see what all the commotion was about. I saw huge bright flames bursting through the roofs of the houses. Carlos (my husband) rushed over to me and said to get Barbara and go to the church because the Indians were shooting arrows at the tule roof making it catch on fire. I rushed over to the place where I left Barbara for the afternoon. I picked her up and took her to the church. I looked inside the church and saw that the roof was on fire there too. All of a sudden I thought of an old Indian friend. I ran as swiftly as the wind to my friend's hut with Barbara in my arms. I found her in her hut. I stayed there for five days assuming that.Carlos had died, but I was wrong. On the sixth day he found me and we decided to stay at the village that my friend lives in for the rest of our live-s. I was glad that the Indians accepted us as friends.

I ran all the way back to my village. Rontu-Aru got there before me. When I got there, my village was empty. A few minutes later three people stood on rock in the back of my village. Two of them I knew; it was my brother and my father's friend Komiko. I ran up to them and gave them a big hug. They began to speak my old tongue and told me who the boy with them was.

By now other people of my tribe came out from where they were hiding. I had not seen my people for a long time and everything looked different. They told me that he was a young boy the same age as me and they had taken him into the tribe because he was starving. He was very handsome and strong.

One moon passed, and I grew more in love with the boy whose name was Charo. His eyes were like deep still ponds. His face was bright and jolly, and his body was strong. Yet, he was kind and gentle. He loved animals, especially Rontu-Aru. Many moons passed, and one sun I married Charo. We both loved each other. I gave birth to a child and we named it Karana in hopes that she would turn out like my aunt.

CHAPTER 30

It was noon by the time I reached the top of the mountain. To my surprise when I got to the top there was a ’big crack in the middle of the mountain. I did not remember this crack in the mountain before.

Across the crack was a small bridge that did not look very stable at all. There was no other way around the crack. The bridge was the only way across. Rontu ran across the bridge and did not get hurt. I thought the bridge was safe to walk across but I made a very big mistake. When I was in the middle, one of the wooden planks broke and I fell through the hole. Luckily I grabbed one of the planks. I yelled at Rontu, "Rontu, go and fetch help!"

Rontu ran like the wind until he reached the village. He barked and barked. Soon the villagers knew something was wrong and ran after him. The villagers pulled me out of the broken bridge.

After two moons, horrible news arrived. The Boston Boy had flipped There were no survivors. Mando, my brother, was dead.

That night I sat on the beach next to Rontu listening to the waves crashing against the sand.

CHAPTER 30 Mando was still on the ship. As I later learned, Mando had been working by the fire on the galley. He worked there bringing wood and lighting the fire. When Stone Hands came on the ship and saw Mando working, he told him, "Tonight I will run away with you."

At night Stone Hands came into Mando's room and \^oke up Mando.'

After he woke up, Stone Hands left to get the ladder. Mando sneaked into the galley to get some food to eat. When Mando and Stone Hands were packed, they came off the boat.

When it was morning, Capitan Cordova went into Mando's room and found he was gone. He thought, where had he gone?

In the afternoon Mando and Stone Hands found Stone Hands' hut in the mountains. Then Mando and Stone Hands decided to live there.

In the summer Mando and Stone Hands came to visit me. I asked Mando, "What happened on the ship? How did you and Stone Hands escape?"

He told me. Then we laughed and told stories.

CHAPTER 30

Rontu Aru and I walked in the hills. We stayed in the .caves and slept there.

Sometimes we could hear a coyote howling i'n the distance.

Rontu would answer.

In the daytime we would get up and look for my tribe.

One night a wolf strayed into our camp. Rontu pounced on him and bit him so he yelped and bled.

I called Rontu back to my side. The wolf whined and backed away. Rontu's yellow eyes shone in the fire light.

I said, "No, Rontu!" Rontu's hair went down and he lay down on the ground.

I didn't sleep that night, afraid that the wolf would come in and kill both of us.

In the morning we went outside and found the wolf sleeping on the ground with a cut in his side. He got up and looked at me with curious eyes.

I went back inside; the wolf followed. Rontu growled. The wolf kept coming.

I said, "No, Rontu."

The wolf licked his cut.

I walked over slowly and put a damp cloth over the wound.

The wolf licked my face and I patted him on the head.

The wolf followed us around.

I decided to name him.

Mando because he reminded me of my brother.

I named him

A sun passed and we came to a little village. Rontu and Mando trotted behind playing together.

I recognized the village at once. It was my village!

As I entered I saw a woman who looked like one of my mother's friends!

I ran to her shouting, "Mora, Mora!"

She looked at me and said, "Zia! You've come back!" me into her hut and offered me some mashed corn.

She invited

I said, "Yes, please!"

I ate it hungrily and gave some to Rontu and Mando.

She said Icould live there and she would take care of me. yes, but soon I would leave. She asked why. I said I wanted to the hills alone.

I said, live in

CHAPTER 31 - EPILOGUE For the next month I worked and slept at Mora's house.

But one day I said, "It is time for me to leave." I went out of the hut and into the forest. Rontu and Mando followed.

1 JOURNAL March 5, 1770 It was a cold day in Boston. I, a British infantryman, was supposed to wake up at 6:30. Unfortunately I am a late sleeper, and my officer kicked me out of bed. I got my clothes on, walked over to the mess hall, and had breakfast. Although you can't really call a hard muffin and cold porridge breakfast.

Then the officer told me that I would be guarding the city all day long with Cooks, Harley, James, and Lotts. So, at 7:40, we walked out of the barracks and strode down King Street. Suddenly, from out of the blue, a hard snowball hit Cooks right in the face. Everybody laughed.

It hit him with such force he was knocked down. I saw a boy running. I ran after him. I couldn't catch him, so I said, "Stop or I'll shoot!"

He still ran on and jumped over a wall. I fired at him, but I completely missed. I saw a man eye me and turn a corner. After that we all split up.

I guarded King Street all day until 9:00 p.m. Then I saw a huge mob marching toward me, led by the man that had eyed me earlier. A sharp stone hit me and I suffered a bloody nose. I could hear them swear, "You darn Lobsterbacks!"

I called out for my companions and they came running. They started to get in a line. Then suddenly a big icicle hit James in the stomach. He fell backwards. He started to get up but he slipped on some ice, accidently firing his gun. The crowd roared with anger.

Stones, icicles, snowballs, and angry shouts were aimed at us. They were overtaking us . _

Suddenly Cooks shouted, "Fire!" I heard seven shots, maybe more.

Five people fell instantly, and some others were wounded. We ran as hard as we could back to our station! It was about 10:15 p.m. and I was tired, so I went to sleep.

I learned that the five people died the next day.

RACCOON AND THE HORSEFLIES Once there was a very, very greedy animal called Raccoon. One night Raccoon was rummaging through the forest, and he came across an old picnic site. Right inside the old garbage can was a very large morsel of cake. Oh, he thought, it is delicious! He was walking back to his hollow tree when right in his path he saw a swarm of horseflies.

They were hungry, also, so they asked for a small morsel. When Raccoon refused, the horseflies stung him, and he ran away into the river, leaving the whole piece of cake for the flies.

I was so excited. I had just been put on the bookshelf of Kepler's Bookstore. Oh goody, here came someone. Maybe she'll buy me, I thought. No I guess she wanted a love story. Here romes someone else, I thought! Pick me, pick me. No, not the Hardy Boys. Pick me!

I guess he didn't hear me. All night long I sat there on the bookshelf, sulking, because nobody would buy me.

The first thing the next morning, a six-year-old girl came into the store and bought me. She took me home. I was so happy! When she bought me, I heard the teller saying that The B ,F ,G was a good book. I was the book The B .F ,G by Roald Dahl.

When we came to her house, she sat down a®d started to read me. It felt like a back scratcher as she easily flipped through my pages. I suddenly felt special. It was so much fun. Every once in a while she would crack u p .

After that I sat on the bookshelf and talked to the other books.

So this is the life of a book.

THE DAY I BECAME A DENIM JACKET One morning I woke up hanging up on a hanger in Macy's-!

I felt like I had been through a wringer! My back hurt badly. 'What was I!? I wanted to go home! I hated it here. I was just about to cry. I missed my mommy!

Suddenly the lights came on. A corpulent, flabby woman appeared.

She came over and fluffed me up like a pillow. The lady came up to me .with a sensor clamper. She clamped me! OUCH! YEOW! That hurt! Now., to make matters worse, I had a sensor tag stapled to my hip. It felt ike someone was pulling off my skin! She said, "Oh, what a cute denim jacket. It must be new!" Then it hit me! I was a cenim jacket.

■ ’ Suddenly another woman appeared. She was diminutive.

She fluffed me up oo.

That night after a long and hard day, I was sleeping in the darkened, deserted store. Suddenly I woke up with a scream! Someone was running away with me and some of my friends. I was just starting to adjust to that store! Now I was being stolen! I was feeling really, really depressed.

I wanted to go home now!

The robber was running like lightning. I was bouncing up and down like a rubber ball being kicked on the beach. The man jumped in his car and drove to his hideout. I was scared half to death! I guessed I was never, ever going to go home. What would happen next?

RAT, CAT, AND THE CHEESE Once Rat spied a piece of swiss cheese on the kitchen floor. Yum, he thought. He made sure that Cat was not around and scampered across to it. Rat immediately began to eat it. After a few minutes he had finished it.

"Boy, am I full," he said. He decided to take a nap next to the place where he had eaten the cheese. Rat slept for about fifteen minutes.

While he was sleeping, Cat had come into the kitchen. Cat was just about to pounce on Rat, but Rat woke up. He saw Cat and shot from his sleeping place toward his rathole. He made it to his home, but he got stuck in the entrance because he had eaten all the cheese. Well, Cat was hungry so he grabbed Rat from his hole and ate him.

Moral:

Don't eat to your heart's content, or you'll lose your heart.

Dec. 18, 1773 Dear Katherine, •% Two days ago (Dec. 16), as you know, some colonists emptied tea into the ocean.

I was one of them. It wasn't as easy as it was described, just dressing up as Indians, creeping aboard a ship, and emptying tea into an ocean. I'll describe to you what really happened.

There were a lot of us, about 150 to be exact, and we all helped each other. First we dressed ourselves up as Indians. We made our face paint out of dirt and water. We rubbed rocks together and made face paint that way too. To stick feathers on our heads, we gathered sap.

We applied the sap onto the ends of the feathers, and then attached them to our heads. Some people even cut off some of their hair so they would look more authentic.

For clothes we went to a cobbler shop and asked for all the leather they had. We snuck home with the leather, hiding behind trees and bushes so that no one would suspect anything. As far as we knew, the Indians didn't use thread, so we cut strips of leather and sewed the large pieces together with this. With the leftover, leather we made moccasins for our feet.

When we were all dressed and ready;we started for the place that Samuel Adams told us to meet. On our way there we met up with some British soldiers. They asked us who we were. Anne, my friend, had once heard some Indians speak to each other so she repeated what they had said. Then the British consulted each other and decided to let us go.

All of us hid behind rocks, trees, stumps, or anything we could find.

When Sam gave us the signal, we all crept aboard the Dartmouth.

Some sailors tried to stop us, but we outnumbered them. The ship was well taken care of and the decks were newly washed. We couldn't find the tea until someone shouted, "Tea!" We dumped all the tea we could find in the room, into the ocean. I imagine there was more but we couldn't find it. I was very nervous because we could be easily caught. We crept off the ship and ran home and changed into regular clothes.

No one found us out, but it turned out to be a bigger incident then we intended it to be.

those people stepping on me made my back hurt. The worst part is that since I'm directly on the wdy to the "Pretty and Plump" section of the store, fat ladies trample me all day, and when there are sales, all night. Believe me, there a.e a lot of "Pretty and Plump" ladies in New York City.

I started out as just a piece of metal, and then workmen came and made me into an escalator.

I have so many gears and levers that even I don't know what they're for! They installed me in Bloomingdale's . I've been here for ten years now, and I'm getting extremely tired.

I even caught a burglar once. A lady stole a gold necklace. She ran down my stairs and her dress got caught in my mouth. It was actually pretty good. I had caught her, and security came to see what had happened.

It turned out that she was wanted in forty-nine states!

I didn't even receive any praise!

Today was awful! A mother brought her three-year-old boy, and he screamed and cried and jumped all over me with his muddy feet. Then a girl came and sat on my rail and sprained it.

I wish I hadn't become an escalator. My friend from the metal yard was lucky - he became a statue on top of a building, where he's never been touched by human feet!

I hope the next sale is just a one-day sale, or, better yet, a tenhour sale or something! Oh well - back to work!

WHAT HAPPENED TO LION One day Lion was trotting to his home in the forest and found a shiny gold rock.

"I found gold!" screeched Lion. He picked up the sack and proceeded on his way. While he was walking he began to think.

"I will rush to Nordstroms and buy a fancy dress. Then I will sell it for twice as much and then do that again. Soon, I will become a millionaire.

I will arrive home and give away all my old clothes." So, Lion did that. He gave a T-shirt to Squirrel, a pair of pants to Rabbit, a scarf to Turtle. He gave all his clothes away.

Then "he went to Nordstroms and gave the rock to the saleswoman.

"This is fake!" she exclaimed, and booted him out of the store, Lion went home and lived a miserable life forever.

Moral:

Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

A few Tories yelled ac us buC we didn'c care. We jusc swore back aC Chem. When we arrived aC Che harbour Adams signaled us Co go aboard.

We carefully encered Che DarCmouch. '-‘We venCured down Co Che lowesC deck and found Cons of craCes of Cea. I picked up one of Che craCes and felc a bash on Che back of ury head.

I whirled around and decked Che BriCish soldier who had hie me. Then I dumped Che Cea inCo Che wacer. JusC as I Curned around, I felc handcuffs slip over my wrisCs. I was shoved inco a wagon and sCarced rolling.

I fell asleep and Che nexC Ching I knew I was in a BriCish jail wich guards ouCside. AfCer a few hours I was Caken inCo a sCadium Chen onCo a placform. There were loCs of Tories around, none of Chem looked nice. OuC of Che crowd came four BriCish soldiers, Chey raised Cheir guns Chen I heard Che roar. Then I felc a piercing scing, and Chen anocher, and Chen anocher.

"No," said Che Lion. "I Choughc you were wise buC you're noC. WhaC if I Crip and fall off Che cliff? I have a beCCer idea. I'll puC on one of my old deerskins and become friends wich Chem. Then I shall geC Chem."

"Do as you wish," said Che Owl.

The nexC day, Lion goC dressed up as a Deer. He was walking towards them when he heard a shot. Then he felt a piercing pain and fell down dead.

Moral:

Trust your friends as you would trust your family.

Friday night, the day before April Fool's Day, Anne, Sarnie, and Cory spent the night over at my house. Anne and I were going to play a joke on Sarnie and Cory. We were going to get toothpaste and put it in Sarnie's and Cory's hands, so when they woke up and rubbed their faces they would get toothpaste all over. The other thing we were going to do was get their swimming suits and drench them and stick them in a bucket of ice so they would freeze and get hard and cold. Anne and I didn't have time to do all that because we went to bed at th->-p<* o'clock in the I morning and woke up at nine o'clock in the morning. When we woke up Samie and Cory were already awake. The April Fool's joke backfired on 'J us!

One day there was a Fox who was always up to mischief. Fox was always playing tricks and had killed several Animals by reversing their guns and saying, "No. This is how you shoot it."

One day, as he was pondering another one of his cunning plans, he gazed at the sun and became permanently blinded. All the other Animals heard about this and decided to play a trick on him. They took him to a cliff and gave him a life raft in a parachute pack and chorused, "Pull that cord for the parachute!"

Fox jumped off and pulled the cord. The life raft popped out and he sailed to the ground and broke his neck. When the others saw this, they said, "With your knowledge you should have pulled the right one."

A few weeks later they decided to play another trick on him. They said "Fox, go across the street to Elephant. With your speed you'll make it! " Fox tried to make it, but he was hit by a car.

The other animals were glad they were rid of the mischievous Fox. Moral:

Don't trust those whom you cannot see.

When I woke up April 1st, I realized Cina had done some scheming of her own. She had put toothpaste on my face. Soon Cina's alarm started beeping. She woke up and screamed. She yelled so shrilly my window cracked! She soon dressed. She found a rubber frog in her underwear drawer. By now I was laughing so hard the neighbors could hear. Cina stormed into my room with her fists clenched. She tried to beat me up but since I'm bigger and stronger she couldn't. She walked out but I was left to snicker to myself and take a shower.

THE MOST EXCITING TEA PARTY EVER Dressed as Mohawk Indians, with homemade warpaint, feathers, tanned leather trousers, and tomahawks, one hundred and fifty companions and I prepared our attack. With a silent signal from Samuel Adams, we quietly climbed aboard the Dartmouth and the two other ships. Petrified as we went, it occurred to me that it was so different to become someone else, but it was wonderful also. The night was chilly and damp, and the smell of the air was extremely full of excitement. The ships were invisible except for a tiny glittering point on the face of the figurehead. The moon provided a soft elegant light. So we were able to work.

We instantly recognized the chests of tea. They were marked with the typical British East India Company's sign. We dumped all, three hundred forty-two chests of tea. It felt so strange but it felt good to take a stand against your home country. In doing so we worked up such a sweat that some of our facepaint came off. As we scampered home giggling, I was so filled with excitement that I tripped over some flagging rope. The sudden sound sent some sailors over to check th ship. We were so scared but luckily they checked the wrong one.

THE DAY I BECAME A GUITAR A flash of light appeared when I played at a rock concert called the Monsters of Rock. My name is B. C. Rich and I am a^green and black euitar. My best friend is a pick. When he struck me we made awesome music. He played with my hair, but it did not hurt. The concert was stupendous.

The next day I was getting ready for another concert, and this one was even better. People were really rowdy and I was ready. C. C. Deville held me tight with his sweaty hands. He was playing "Fallen Angel" on me. Fireworks and colorful lights were flashing over the stage. In the third song I was hurled across the stage, carefully. A big strong man caught me tightly. An acoustic named Gibson arrived on the stage. The music that came out of Gibson sounded great.

Then I performed on the stage. The music that came out of me was loud but I sounded wonderful. I was played until the concert was over.

I was placed in a Hall of Fame museum with the pick and Gibson.

THE DAY I BECAME A DRUMSTICK The day I became a drumstick occurred back in the 1960's. I was used by Ringo Starr, the drummer of The Beatles. At every concert of The Beatles I felt an enormous headache; too bad there weren't any Extra, Extra Strength Tylenols for drumsticks!

Finally my dream came true! That night, at the last concert for The Beatles that year, Ringo Starr decided to throw me into the audience. I couldn't wait to see where I would end up. Finally the last song ended. Ringo pulled back his arm, paused, and chucked me into the audience. I was heading for a teenager, almost there...OW, he caught me by my head! I saw by his name tag that his name was Rikki Rockett.

Today, April 1, 1989, I am still used by Rikki Rockett in a group.

I had no idea they were a rock band. We are in the biggest concert of the group's history. Now I need Extra, Extra, Extra Strength Tylenol.

I think I'm going to get thrown again! It's the last song, and he just grabbed my head; he's getting ready,...WOW, that was a big throw!

I'm heading for an eleven-year-old,...OW, he caught me in the head again! On his name tag it says, Russell Glendon.

A few months later when the trees were caked with ice and the grass was sprinkled with snow, the Squirrel heaud a huge "klunk" against his tree. He opened up his door and, to his surprise, standing in the doorway was the same Raccoon he had seen a few months before.

"P-P-Please, can I come in and have some food?

I'm starving."

The Squirrel looked at the Raccoon in disgust.

"Of course not, my chubby friend. I tried to tell you to save your food last summer."

Then he slammed the door in his face.

The Raccoon walked off, hungry as usual.

THE FASHION SCHEME

Finally it was April Fool's. I had to think up something to do to my brother. ’ [■That would he really hate, I thought. I know. Since he is always trying to find out what the latest fashion for boys is, I could find him some of Dad's clothes which he wore in the 50's. That would be a perfect plan, but even more perfect was that my dad was a hippie.

I went out into the backyard where my dad was mowing the lawn. I asked where his hippie clothes were, and he said that they were in his bedroom closet. I walked into his room and started throwing things out of the closet, looking for some of the clothes. Finally I found some bellbottom pants and a brightly colored tie-dyed shirt. Then I found some sandals and a headband. Perfect, I thought. I started running to my brother's room with the clothes flopping around in my hands.

After what had seemed as a million years of running, I reached his room. I heard a voice in back of me, and I jumped around to see my mom standing in the hall with her hands on her hips.

"JENNY," she yelled, "I've told you a million times NOT TO RUN IN THE HALL!" "Sorry, Mom," I said in a weak voice. back to my brother's room.

I turned and started to walk

Then I heard my mom yell at me once again, "and JENNY, tell YOUR BROTHER TO TURN DOWN HIS MUSIC!" "Okay, Mom." I turned around and opened his door. music," I hollered.

I told my brother that the clothes I had brought with me were the latest fashion. With a satisfied smile plastered on my face, I walked off without the clothes in my hand. I was a genius! When I got downstairs, after getting dressed for school, my mom told me that my brother had already left for school.

With another smile on my face, I left for school. When I reached the school, I saw a group of kids crowded around someone. I walked up to the group of kids, and discovered that it was my brother whom everyone was looking at. With my nose in the air I tossed my head and walked off. At lunch time I realized that my whole plan had backfired.

This morning when I got to school no one had been making fun of my brother. They were all jealous of him, and now everyone wears hippie clothes to school.

THE WOLF AND THE MICE One day wolf was prowling around the forest when he saw a poster hanging on a tree. It stated, "Mouse wanted in cheese factory. Salary: Slice of cheese an hour. Full time/part time."

"That's it," exploded Wolf, "I'll dress up as a mouse.

Then, as soon as my fellow-workers get to work, I'll gobble 'em down."

Wolf retrieved a mouse costume and went to the factory.

"Hi, are you applying for the job?" asked

Head Mouse

"Yea," snarled Wolf.

"You are awful big," called Mouse.

"I know, I was the runt of the litter," blurted out Wolf.

"You look more like a giant than a runt," remarked Mouse.

"Wella, um, that's, a what I mean."

"Oh, well, come now. suspiciously.

I'll show you whatto do,

said Mouse

Wolf started to work away. Then he pounced on the mouse next to him in the assembly line.

Wolf gnawed on his flesh. He was pleased.

He decided to go for the next mouse. He did, but that mouse was too ■smart. He jumped across the trough of boiling cheese.

THE GOLDEN HARP Hans was tall with sandy-brown hair and gray eyes. He was a timid, cheerful boy who enjoyed music and nature.

It was early June, and Hans was going to live with his grandmother in a village near Thun. Hans rode the train to Thun. When he arrived at the station, he hitched a horse and. carriage to take him to a small, white cottage.

He knocked on the wooden door and an elderly lady with graying hair opened the door. She was dressed in a peach dirndl and she greeted him warmly, "Guten morgen."

Grandmother invited him into the kitchen which consisted of a fireplace and a pine table with four chairs. In the comer was a pile of feather pillows and quilts. They ate some stew and decided to go to bed. Hans ascended the ladder and glanced around at where he would be staying for the next couple of weeks. The room was yellow, and it had a dresser and a bed against the wall. Suddenly tired, he slipped into his night shirt and instantly fell asleep.

He awoke to the sound of birds singing and squirrels chattering in the forest. Hans opened his eyes as sunbeams streamed from the circular window. He jumped out of bed and looked outside. He gazed out through the panes at the silver river below. Deciding to explore the bombs after breakfast, he hurriedly got dressed into lederhosen.

He descended the ladder and sat down at the table. Grandmother placed a pile of hot cakes before him. He ate hungrily and was done in twenty minutes.

"I'm going exploring, Grandmother," he called happily as he skipped out the door and into the garden. He barely noticed the colorful flowers as he zipped down the hill and into the forest. The lush pines provided him shade from the blazing sun. He heard the gurgling of the river nearby and quickly rushed over for a drink. A cool breeze whistled through the immense pines, carrying an enchanting melody. It was beautiful, like the sound of angels singing in the heavens. The wind had come from upstream, and Hans excitedly walked towards the music. A herd of deer slurped from the bubbling river and he noiselessly tiptoed by. He walked on and on following the river, pausing now and then to catch his breath and get a sip of the refreshing water. Another breeze came from the North, conveying the dreamy song. It was louder than before, and it gave him more strength to go on. After a few more minutes he came upon a clearing. On a rock sat a dazzling gold harp.

"Oh," he sighed. It was truly the most lovely thing that he had ever seen.

The wind blew through the strings, playing the wonderful melody. Hans ran and leaped over the river to the harp. He strummed the golden strings and played for hours. It was growing dark, and his stomach grumbled, reminding him that he hadn't eaten since breakfast. He left the harp to go back to Grandmother, promising himself that he would return the next day.

At the crack of dawn, Hans returned as promised to retrieve the beloved golden harp. He delicately carried the fragile instrument back to the cottage to show Grandmother, and he treasured it for the rest of his life.

THE SWIM Rainsford dashed to the sea and leaped in. He stroked rapidly so that huge waves formed on the surface. He was getting tired. All his muscles were strained.

Rainsford's plan was to go up to General Zaroffs house, climb the wall into his bedroom, and creep up on the General and surprise him.

Rainsford trod water and thought. He decided to head towards the shore.

He swam speedily. He was beginning to get terribly hungry. He started to swim faster. He was out o f the water now and began walking toward the house. The jungle was misty and cold. It sent chills up Rainsford's spine. He had to fight his way through the wet branches and bushes. He was frightened. Rainsford didn't see the snakes, spiders, insects, and monkeys in his path but heard them. He was almost there, because he knew that the mucky swamp was near to the castle. Then he saw the huge dark house. He snuck up to the side of the wall and crept up it slowly and steadily, watching every stone and crack.

Rainsford was very worried. He poked his head into the window. Yea, no one is in there, he thought. He was quite relieved. He leaped into the room, pulled down the bed covers, and jumped into bed.

\ Once upon a rime there lived a bad-tempered old king who always insisted on having his way. He was seldom reasonable when he had an argument. His name was King Rad. and his face looked as if it was steamed with an iron. It was covered with wrinkles and had tiny spots. The bad temper he had did not affect the kingdom much, because he usually blamed whatever he was mad at on himself. The people of the kingdom did not understand his unusual behavior because they had never seen or heard of it before.

The queen and the prince were often concerned and worried about him acting this way. One day he became enraged and almost blew his head off. Then there was a quiet moment and all of a sudden he started to cry.

The queen heard him crying, came in and said, "Whatever is the matter, dear?” Then he said in a deep sorrowful voice, "I don't think I can take it any longer. I think I might have a heart attack. I think it's time for our son to ascend the throne so I may relax.” With those words the price took the palace o f the king. Now everyone calls the king’s father's behavior "rad".

THE TROLLS About a year ago, I was watching television in the living room when suddenly a bump appeared under the rug and it started to move around. I got up and mashed the bump with my chair. Green blood spurted out all over the rug. I lifted the rug to see what the bump was. It was green with a very small knife. It looked like a troll.

The next day it happened again. This time I caught the troll. He stabbed me in hand with his little knife. It felt like someone was sticking me with a needle. I dropped him on the floor and he ran into a little hole where his family must have lived.

Later that day I went to the library and looked for a book on trolls. I found one rifled-AH You Want to Know About Trolls. I read it through and found a chapter on trolls that live under rugs. The book stated that the trolls were prehistoric mutant organisms accidently created by a tyrannosaurus rex breeding with a triceratops. So it means that the trolls survived whatever killed all the dinasaurs.

When I arrived home I sat down to read the book I had checked out from the library. Suddenly the bump under the rug appeared again. In the book it stated that the best way to kill trolls was to drive a wooden stake or spear through the head "That's why the wooden chair killed it quickly," I thought.

I went out in the shed to see if I could find something sharp made out of wood.

Fortunately I did. It was a post that had fallen off my fence. Then I went inside and chased the troll. I trapped it in the shower and drove the wooden post right between the troll's eyes.

I picked up the carcass and took it to the police station to notify them about these trolls. The policeman said, "You should go back to the insane asylum where you came from!

I remember reading in the book that hydrochloric acid can melt a troll into a sizzling pulp. The next day I went to a science store and bought some hydrochloric acid.

I went home and put the acid in a metal squirt gun to turn the trolls into a sizzling pulp. I set off to look for them. I opened the door to the attic and a troll came and squirt, I got him. The troll started to sizzle and suddenly melted. That was not a pretty sight! I shined a flashlight through the open door I saw a whole civilization of trolls living in my attic. I knew I couldn't kill all of them with a squirt gun; I'd have to make some sort of bomb that squirted out the acid.

It took me three weeks to make this acid bomb. I drove to a military weapons black market dealer and bought some plastic explosives. I stuck the explosives next to the door and put a steel box which contained the acid next to it. I looked through the attic door and the trolls came running after me. I ran as fast as I could to the front door and outside. Suddenly, KABOOM, went the bomb. Well, I decimated the trolls but I also nuked the top of my house. It took me a long time to rebuild my house.

THE M YSTERIOUS THING

Austin Hastings and his sister Julia walked smoothly and swiftly down to the shimmering lake on the outskirts of London. Here only children liked to go. As they walked they didn't talk; they just moved with their heads down, looking at their feet.

Austin wore ragged brown slacks and a large white shin. His hair was long and obviously hadn't been cut for a while. He was wearing no shoes. Julia had on a pink summer dress with flowers on it.. Her hair was combed niceiy and on one side was pulled back by a clip. She was wearing sandals on her feet.

When they reached the large lake. Austin led Julia to their normal resting spot under the birch tree. They began to converse with one another until a glowing in die pond distracted them both. Julia beckoned to Austin to come see what had happened. He followed obediently. They quickly scurried down the hill. At the lake a glowing thing seemed to be moving around the bottom.

"What do you think it is?” asked Austin.

"I have no idea at all. Do you suppose it's a monster?" answered Julia.

"Of course not. Monsters aren't real. Perhaps we should fetch Father.”

"I suppose so. We’d better get him right away."

They quickly ran up the hill, out the iron gates, and down the street.

They returned with a burly man dressed in a three piece suit, carrving an umbrella, and wearing a top hat.

"Right over here. Father." said Austin.

All three of them walked over to the side of the pond where he saw nothing.

"There is nothing there, my children." said Father.

"But there was something there just a minute ago," said Julia. "It was a glowing thing of some kind."

"Perhaps you imagined it. Well. I have to get back to that tedious job of mine which I must say I dislike very much. I will see you tonight. Good-bye."

He left, saying nothing more. Just as their father left the gates, the same odd light began to glow.

"There it is, Austin. That's strange. Why did it come on right as Father left?"

"I think I know what it means. Don't you see? We re children, and onlv children are able to see it."

"That's impossible! Nobody believes in that stuff."

"But it’s the only explanation. If..." he never finished his sentence. All of a sudden a large gurgling sound came from the glowing thing. Then Austin and Julia heard it talking to them.

"We have picked you," it said, "to help us."

'T o help you with what?" asked Austin in a terrified voice.

T o help us win the battle."

"Against what?" Julia asked calmly.

"You will find out. Come down here.”

"No," said Austin, "we'll get all wet. Besides, it's dangerous."

"If you wish, follow these directions: go home and fill your stomach, put on clothes more comfortable, and come back here and get in the water at the place you see me now."

The children scurried home, not knowing what to do. Austin made a sandwich while Julia changed into a swimsuit.

Then they switched jobs. Austin changed while Julia ate. They quickly returned to the pond to see what would happen.

"O.K. let's go," said Austin.

"O.K., but are you sure?"

"Yes," said Austin.

They jumped in the water together, holding hands. Their heads went under and bubbles formed where they had been. Mysteriously enough, the children were never, ever seen again.

THE JOURNEY TO THE FARAWAY DREAMLAND One day four little orphan children whose names were Tommy, Jill, Joey, an.

Bobby were wandering on the cold, dark streets of New York City.. The orphan children were very cold and hungry, but they had nowhere to go and no food to eat. Every night they would dig in garbage cans for food, and every night they would make a bed with plastic bags to lie on with newspapers for a blanket. While the children were sleeping they dreamed about a wonderful place with lots of food and warm, comfortable beds with clean blankets and soft white sheets.

Tommy was the oldest, Joey was the youngest, and Jill and Bobby were in the middle. They were all sisters and brothers. Their parents had run off and left them to start a new life, and that's how they became orphans.

The next day arrived, and the children folded up their things and headed off for work. They worked in a vegetable and fruit shop down the street from where they stayed.

• » After work the children got their share of money for working and went to a

book store that contained all kinds of books. The children walked into the store with huge frowns on their faces because they couldn't decide which book to buy, except for Jill because she was the smartest of all of them She glanced around for awhile, and she finally found a book called The Journey to the Faraway Dreamland. She read it for awhile and she liked it, so she brought it over to her brothers to read.

While reading a sentence in the book, Joey yelled out "Hey, that was in my dream." The sentence read, "The Faraway Dreamland has lots of food and warm, comfortable beds with clean blankets and soft, white sheets."

After everyone else had read it, they said the same thing. The book had plenty of instructions on how to get there so the children tried their hardest to follow them carefully. The first instruction was to make a ship, put wheels on it, and ride it on tracks by the water. So the children did it, and they finally reached "The Farawav Dreamland." And there they lived for the rest of their DAWN VINEGAR

AN APPLE A P A Y KEEPS THF. DOCTOR AW AY ' When I was five years old, I always devoured my appie-a-day.

It had been a rainy night and our stock of apples was gone. I started stamping my feet, crying, and having a tantrum because I couldn't eat my apple. My mom had told me that I had to eat my apple, and now she was informing me that I couldn’t eat my apple. She told me that all of the stores were closed because of the weather (of course she was lying because it was 9:00 o’ clock at night, my bedtime, and she didn't feel like driving all the way to the stores). My mom finally convinced me that she would buy some apples the next day and I could eat two apples that day.

The next day when I woke up I started complaining that my stomach hurt because I hadn't eaten my apple the night before. I insisted on going to the doctor. When we arrived there and the doctor Had checked me out, he told me that it was okay if I didn’t have an apple every day. He said that an apple once in a while still keeps the doctors away.

GEEKBURGER

I George Oswall, the tallest in my class, am five foot ten. I have long streamy blond hair and blue eyes that sparkle in the moonlight. Freckles flow all over my face.

My grade point average a few years go was 1.2. My teachers were talking about kicking me out of school. To top it all off, I didn't have any friends. My real parents had abandoned me when I was five. I think they did that because they probably thought I was the nerdiest kid in the world. My foster parents were just about the richest people in the world. I didn't believe how snobby they were. I’m sure you don't want to hear anything more about me. Let's get on with the story.

I used to live in Zimbabwe, and they called me a "geek." I despised it, and when I was fourteen we traveled to Kalmazoo, Michigan, to escape the name-calling. I enjoyed it at first until I started working at Burger Land. My friends called me the Burger Man. My parents decided that we should move to California. I lived there for two yean until the news got around that George Oswall was the Burger Man. I became a famous man. The people of the world called me "Geekburger" for short instead of "the geek" and "The Burger Man." Now people use my name to mean a hulking person. Now whenever you hear the word "geekburger," think of me, George Oswall.

A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE I feebly pulled my navy blue P.B.S. sweatshirt over my head and walked wearily through the bathroom door. I massacred my hair and in a desperate rush clipped it back with an ugly red hairclip. Have I gained any weight? I thought.

Hurriedly I jumped onto the edge of the bathtub and knocked something off the shower door. I didn't think much of it, I just put the little whatever-it-was-that-felloff-the-door back on. Then, remembering why I was up there, I turned my attention back to my figure. I gazed ruefully at myself in the mirror and realized that, as a matter of fact, I had gained about fifteen pounds.

"Mom, I really think Afro's okay," I argued, leaning against the library door. "We don't need to call her."

"Well, maybe she's not," my mother pointed out. "We're calling."

Ring, ring, ring.

"Hello," Afro sighed, uninterestedly.

"How are you?" my mother inquired.

"Mom, guess what happened?" Afro blurted out. "I was just leaning over to turn on the water so I could take a shower, and, well, don't get mad, but I hit the shower door. I didn't think that, well, uh, the shower door broke on my head!"

"My God," my mother shrieked, "are you hurt? Is there any bleeding?

Never mind, I'll be right over."

I scrambled over to the car, unable to keep the uncontrollable question from popping into my head. What if it had been I? I wondered. I didn't really worry much about Afro, because, well, I had no reason to. She was my sister and, like a few other sisters may be, we were enemies.

When I arrived at the scene of the disaster, I was quite disappointed. Of course, glass was all over the place, but there wasn't a drop of blood anywhere.

Afro was only slightly scratched on her head and hands; that was all. However, whatever I did the rest of that day, a small question seemed to be trying to push its way into my head. What if it had been I? I knew that the shower door had come apart because I hadn't put the part that had broken off back on right. I should have gotten my mother to help me, Instead of trying to do it by myself. Now, for the first time, I truly understand the meaning of "a stitch in time save nine."

KRISTEN SAVELLE

THE DREAM I W ISH COULD COME TRUE One Saturday night as I was staggering home from the hardest hockey game ever, I realized I felt very tired. I slowly tramped into my room and lay down on my bed. I fell asleep.

I found myself in a smelly locker room. I looked down onto the back of a Boston Bruin's shirt. The name on the shirt read Mustburger. That happened to be my last name. I guess that meant I was on the team. I slowly struggled to put my pads on.

A ' I skated onto the cold ice. noise filled the stadium. I felt very joyful.

The crowd was yelling, "Nermal Mustberger!'' That's me. The referee dropped the puck, and I sped down along the boards which was stupid.

Just as I thought how stupid it was, two fat larders attacked me. Their names were Frank and Ruth. They brutally checked me, but with skill, I recovered the puck. I skated toward the huge muscular goalie. I shot the puck in between his legs.

WIMP Once upon a rime, in the kingdom of Sling Humperdink, there was a knight named Sit Wimp. He was a coward, a fact he tried to hide. One day he heard that a dragon threatened his kingdom.

Trembling with fear, he dived into a nearby bale of hay.

Meanwhile the dragon flew slowly over the kingdom leaving a trail of destroyed cities and burned villages behind him.

As the dragon flew over the king's castle, a famous warrior named Sir Erwin von Poindexter saw the dragon from a tower and raised his sword. Erwin was dark-haired, blue-eyed, and extremely clumsy. Suddenly he fell down on a catapult. He dropped his sword in the catapult, then tripped over the firing rope getting out. His sword flew into the dragon’s wing and ricocheted into a nearby bale of hay.

The dragon-feeling he was not welcome-left. The sword, however, had hit the very bale of hay Sir Wimp lay concealed in.

He jumped up and yelled, "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaoooooooouu!" as the sword pierced him.

From then on any coward has been called a wimp.

RICHARD GILL

GNARLY Jorge slipped on his triple X yellow and green checked pants. He tucked in his grey shirt which had "Chunky Charles's Race for Fat People Only" printed on it. He was fat. He was so fat that his fat had fat. His teeth were gnarled with lumps of plaque from eating so much.

Jorge sat in his station wagon and drove to his new school. It was called Radsville High. He stepped out of the station wagon, flung his backpack on his back, and walked up the stairs. As he walked he smiled, and as he smiled, people parted to the side of him and looked at his lumpy body and ugly teeth and said,"Yuck, he's all gnarls."

In history class the teacher said,"We have a new pupil this year.

His name is Jorge." Everybody laughed. Jorge stood up smiling and bowed. People were whispering. One person said, "Let's call him Gnarled."

Another said, "No, let's call him Gnarly."

Soon every body was calling him Gnarly. Poor Gnarly was sad and unpopular until one day when these two bullies, Biff and Buff, \ challenged him to a skate boarding contest on the beach at four o'clock. Gnarly was freaked, but he knew he had to take the challenge.

He met Biff and Buff at the beach on time. Gnarly wobbled up to the skating bowl and saw the whole school, even the principal, sitting on bleachers. Biff and Buff did the raddest skate-boarding trick called the Biff Buff Boom. Gnarly thought he could never top it.

As soon as Biff and Buff finished, they handed Gnarly the toughest board they had. Gnarly went to the side of the bowl. Pressure was running through his head like a freight train. He took a deep breath and pushed off; he was bowlborne. He was going so fast it was unbelievable. He did a handplant, a daffy, a backscratcher, and the hardest trick in the world-an Ollie Axel Triple Flip. The crowd roared with applause. Biff and Buff went up to him and said, "You are the raddest skater, Gnarly," and asked for skate boarding lessons. Gnarly was now the most popular kid on and off campus.

Gnarly was so proud of himself that he fasted for two weeks and lost three hundred pounds. He asked his parents for a dentist appointment, and he came back with all the plaque off his teeth and silver shining braces which he hated,. Gnarly became so rich from skate-boarding that he bought a mansion for his family and himself and a Ferrari only for himself. Well, Gnarly became best friends with Biff and Buff, and they were called the BBG, and they went around playing pranks, catching girls, skate-boarding, etc. Soon "Gnarly" became a national word meaning cool and rad.

OCTOBER 13,1991: Part One Picture it. It was Friday, October 13, 1991, when I was at my desk reviewing the evidence from the previous case, and my T.V. was on with a commercial about a flying car. Suddenly, a strange-looking man walked in about 8:30AM. He had a small head, a big nose, and a big mouth.

"My wife has just been kidnapped," he said, "by a man who threatened to kill her!"

"Calm down. When did this happen?" I asked.

"Just now. He was heading East," he told me.

"So that's where we're headed!"

We stepped into my Porsche 937 convertible and were off. There was only one place we could go and that was the coast.

We were off in about a minute; it only took us about one hour to get there. We were looking into the cargo hold of a ship when we heard a box fall and we immediately went to investigate. We saw a man move from behind the crate and say, "Do you want your wife back?" Then he ran off.

The Creature of the Underworld It was one year ago today, when it happened again. It was the same moonlit, eerie night that the creature rose from the dead last year. It had teeth that looked like swords, claws that were like spears, a tail like a metal bull whip, and its saliva was death. It burned through anything it touched. It was the king o f the underworld. It was the devil himself.

One year ago this night, I was walking down the hall and the floor started to bulge underneath me. I took a chair and smashed the bump under me. I broke the chair, and the creature came up. It hit me with its tail, and I went soaring across the room. It had the power of a hundred men, and I hit the wall. I was knocked unconscious. I woke up a couple of minutes later, and it had my parents. It jumped down the hole with my parents. I was about to go after the creature but I decided otherwise.

The next day I was in mourning. I decided to see the old mail who had lived in the house before us. I ran to his house. The first thing he said when I opened the door was, "You are having trouble with him, aye.”

I said, "Who's him?" The old man said that "him" was the devil himself. He also announced he would help me with my problem. I was amazed that he knew of my problem.

On his walls and shelves hung swords. They had precious stones in their hilts. He told me to take the one with the ruby in it. He said that it was the one that would destroy the devil. He told me to be off.

I had the sword in hand and jumped into the hole from which the creature came. The sweat was glistening on my brow as I walked down a long corridor. There it was.

I fought bravely, but it was too strong. All of a sudden a bolt of energy shot out from the sword, and the devil was stunned. I plunged my sword deep into its heart. The monster lumbered back in agony and fell dead at my feet.

Then I was back in my house with my family. That was the end of the creature.

THE EVIL BOAR

Once, a long time ago, a very brave centaur came to clear the land of all the wild beasts. He brought a dwarf to help him. The centaur’s name was Thorases, and his companion's name was Extorbe. Thorases was equipped with a magical bow and arrow and Extorbe was armed with a wand that could turn wild beasts into stone.

One dav in the land of King Herberlesies, Thorases and his comrade went to stan their job. It was about 4:00 a.m. when they came upon a giant boar who was not very friendly.

The boar's face was pale, but his teeth were razor sharp. Extorbe tried to shoot the boar's head, but the boar quickly pulled out a shield of gold and blocked the shot. The boar was about fifteen feet long and twenty feet tall.

The boar meanly boasted, "I am the king of all beasts. If you can kill me, all of my beast subjects will evaporate."

Thorases and Extorbe both hid behind a rock to work out a plan. "We should shoot at his legs," whispered Extorbe.

"Why don't you shoot at his chest, and I will shoot at his legs?" answered Thorases.

"Agreed," said Extorbe according to the plan. Both kept attacking until the boar fell. "Hurrah!" they both exclaimed.

In a few seconds the boar and his other loyal beasts evaporated into thin air.

Today we can see the boar, next to Orion. His henchmen are all at least two thousand miles away from the boar.

Gaelyn Mary Kiely Felix October 24, 1988 THE SWIM A sudden chill ran up Rainsford's spine as the warm waters of the Caribbean collapsed over his head. Rainsford’s fear of sharks was now overwhelmed by his horror of General Zaroff. After swimming for about eight-hundred yards, Rainsford rapidly ascended the sandy beaches toward where General Zarroff s monstrous castle huddled between the jungle trees like a buried penny in the sand. Rainsford crept slowly but steadily toward where the hounds were devouring their raw meat. He was careful to keep quiet so the hounds wouldn't hear him.

Rainsford crept up the ivy beams of Zaroff s castle. As Rainsford opened General Zaroff s bedroom window, it creaked like a mad parakeet, almost sending Rainsford back down the ivied buttress. After regaining his strength, Rainsford writhed through General Zaroffs bedroom window. Rainsford approached the long but exciting moment when General Zaroff would walk tUrrtn irk f K a A r \ r - \ r

REMEMBERING MY COUSIN When 1 was, five years old. I remember that 1 used to get in big fights with my cousin Robert. The thing that he hated the most was when I pulled his hair and dragged him around. Finally when I was seven and he was six, he began to get his revenge. We were the worst of cousins when we were young kids.

Now that we have both grown and the years have passed we have become the very best of cousins. I like being with him because when I’m around him I can remember lots of other things we used to do together. He's very thoughtful and we both love and care for each other a lot.

LORENA

MARLIN I remember it clearly. The sun sparkled on the waters of the deep, blue Caribbean. Quinn posidoned himself at the wheel and me on the lookout tower. Suddenly I sighted a blue marlin basking on the top of the water. I shouted to Quinn, "Bait the hook with mackerel and let the line sail at 12 o'clock."

I raced down to the lower deck to do battle with the marlin. As Quinn handed the pole over to me, it almost slipped out of my hands. Yet my grip on the pole was just firm enough to keep it from falling in the water.

As 1 searched for the marlin, I could see nothing. At that very moment my pole started to jerk and bend. Just then, the mariin leapt out of the water, twisting and turning, churning the once calm waters. I could see that he was gradually losing strength. My hand was on the reel, sweat was pouring down my face, and my eyes were glued to that marlin. Slowly and steadily I reeled him in. As he approached the boat, I grabbed my bat and clobbered him. As I repeated this, the marlin painfully died.

When we departed for the docks, the waters turned calm again, and the sun settled low on the horizon. No rays of sun sparkled and danced on the water any longer, but there were two happy fishermen on their way home for a succulent dinner.
