HOW DAY WAS FOUND

looki Iew aoove the cloud! [Great Hawk flew high in the sxy. for something, anything that would brighten the sky. For it'was always darl in the town, Ishki. He flew to the town of Evana. To his surprise the people there had something very, very bright hanging above the sky. It was a giant star. He flew as fast as he could to the people who were just about, to go into their houses. Their eyes were very droopy. "What is the matter?" he said. "We can not sleep with that star on all the time. It hurts our eyes. 'We can use it in the day, but we can't use it during night times. Please take it away." "I will take it to my people in a basket I brought and bring it back when it is your daytime," said Hawk.

TfX

So they said,"OK," and that is how day was invented. From that day on Hawk did his job very well bring the star from the town of Ishki to Evana every day.

GIRL ARRESTED Today Goldilocks was arrested inClearlake, Arizona, at 11:00 a.m. She was accused of breaking four windows, driving a car without a license, knocking down three bears, and destroying police property. She is now in jail for one year in the cell next to a witch who tried to eat two children. World Wide News interviewed Goldilocks. things, she said, "No comment.^

When asked why she did these

The three bears announced that Goldilocks deserved punishment by the Court of Tiny Accidents. When asked how they felt, the bears said, "We feel bad about Goldilocks breaking in, but we are happy that she gets the punishment she deserves." WWN interviewed a witness who was at the scene of the crime. His name is John Benet, and he owns a store called Washy-Bee Clean. He said, "Goldilocks is a nice girl, but she did do the crimes that were committed." WWN has gathered more facts in the case of Goldilocks and discovered that there were two more witnesses. They had seen a woman eating bon-bons, watching "North by Northwest." Her wallet was open and there was no license. She had a wooden bat that was still on the floor with many glass pieces. Then WWN told police that Goldilocks probably had been framed. They came over and arrested the woma n . The police have told Goldilocks that she is probably innocent and free to go. by Matthew O'Reilly

MY DAD My dad, Eric, is forty-two years old and six feet, six inches tall. He is strong and very, very, very chubby. His great big eyes are green. His hair is sort of grayish blackish and is very straight. My dad's personality is funny and he makes lots of jokes. Some of them I don't understand, but most of them I do. He doesn't laugh but he chuckles a lot. My brother's favorite thing about my dad is that he can't say "no" to us. I think that's because he doesn't care about himself. He only cares about other people. What 1 like about my dad is that he is not shy at all. Eric is interested in all sorts of sports like football, wrestling, boxing, bowling, skiing, ice-skating, and roller skating. He is fast and likes bike riding and reading. When I was three years old, my dad and I climbed on the roof. Then my dad threw me off the roof. I thought it was fun. but I was glad when my mom caught me. If my mom had not caught me, I would have landed on the bricks. I am very lucky that she caught me. Then my dad jumped down. I asked him if we could do it again but he said, "Once is enough, Dana."

Today the mother of the three little pigs was arrested. She was arrested in Mississippi for sending her children away to make homes of their own, when they were only six years old. She said, "I told them to watch out for the wolf, but they did not and now they're dinner." Eye witness, Porky Pig, heard the mom say, "Get the heck out of my house," but he swears she did not say a thing about the wolf. Her children are still alive in the wolf's stomach because they were swallowed whole, but the wolf will not say anything. When Mother Pig was interviewed she said, "And I told them to make their house out of steel. She claimed her children had never listened anyway. Finally the wolf said, "The children tasted good, and the mother did not even yell at me. She just called down my throat to her kids, and said, 'You stupid kids. You're no good.' " Then the police knocked down the door and arrested her. jail on charges of child abuse. by

HOW THE CENTRAL VALLEY WAS MADE One day eagle called a huge meeting. so it was very important.

Eagle was the animals' king,

"I have a problem," Eagle was saying. "There is not enough food or room in this desert for all of us. We need to find a new place to live. Eagle called everyone to order. "Our earth is very big, as you know, so I need lots of you to go out and scout out the earth for a new and better place to live." Everyone was very excited, for they wanted to get chosen for the job. Eagle cried out again for all the animals to calm down, and when they had he spoke. "Falcon, I want you to go fly with Dove and try to find a new place to live." Dove and Falcon were so excited they danced around and around. Then Eagle spoke. "All rabbits shall go on the same quest but in a different direction from Falcon and Dove." Eagle gave jobs to all the animals except for one, Coyote. Coyote was very mad and insulted all the other animals. They cannot do the job. They are not fast enough or smart enough!" (Often Coyote bragged about what a fast runner he was. But he had never before insu Ited the animals.) Eagle was very patient and simply said, "Someone has to watch over this place where we are right now. You may do that." And with that, called the meeting over, and he said he would call them when they were to go on their journeys. Eagle said that in seven days everyone would 1eave. Well, Coyote was very mad. If Eagle liked him more, maybe he could someday become the animals' leader! Just then an idea struck him. Coyote thought he was so brilliant, he whispered his plan to himself out loud. "If I find a place for the animals before they go off on their journeys, I will surely be praised by all the animals." So Coyote set out five days before all the other animals did. Coyote went very carefully, inspecting every step, for the earth was still wet. If he made a mark, he would be in a lot of trouble. The earth is very big and he spent many days looking for the perfect place. Suddenly Coyote saw Magpie come out. "0 no!," Coyote cried, so startled he fell back, and where his back fell, there was a big crevice in the earth! And when Magpie saw the place Coyote had made, she called the others, and Eagle decided that that was where they were going to live! Today we call the place......

“H E R E !! ! "

"OK,here,“said Bird. “How do I get it?" "well said Looka-Nooka.“We have to unscrew these bolts, throw out this head. Set that other one. Put it on. Screw on this beak. Trim it a little bit. And bingo!! Here's your head, that will be eighteen feathers-no I mean seventy— five feathers." "What?!??!!!"shouted Bird. S N A P !" O U C H , YIKES, AHH! YA-HQ-HO!!" "Bye,“said Bird. About two weeks ago David came in my room and said, "Clean up your room!" My mom overheard that and thought it was a good idea. The next day we had to clean up my whole room and throw out half my stuff. It wasn't the best thing he ever did, but I was surprised my mom followed a three year old's order. by Sarah Oehm

HANSEL AND GRETEL DIE The remains of Hansel and Gretal were found in a candy house of a mean old witch in the forest. Mr. John Sutter made the discovery at 1:30 p.m. as he was exploring. Mr. McPherson, the chiIdren's father, said, "I'm very sad my son and my daughter died." The person who heard the little kids scream before discovering the bodies, Mr. Sutter, said, "When the little kids were put into the oven, the mean old witch laughed and that's when I called 911. It was a scary sight that Monday at the witch's house." The only thing left of Hansel and Gretel are the skulls. Since the witch had murdered some kids, police say the witch may be executed.

ENDINGS TO ZIA THAT SCOTT O'DELL DIDN'T WRITE:

As I was running along the stream with Rontu-Aru, I came to the part where the stream splits in two and goes out into the sea. There I saw our Indian village. I could see that the village had been abandoned for years because it was so still. I sat down under a tree and ate part of my tortilla and drank from my olla of water. I remembered the things and adventures I had had at the mission. I remembered when the whalers caught me and Mando. I remembered when Karana died, looking off into the sea. Suddenly it started to rain. I ran into one of the huts. It was warm and dry inside. After a while I started to get thirsty but my olla was empty. I left Rontu-Aru to fill my olla up with water from the stream When I came back, I let Rontu-Aru have a drink from my olla. He took a lot of water. I think he was very thirsty. Then I took a drink. The water was fresh and not salty because the stream flows out to the sea, not from it. The next few days Rontu-Aru and I went around-the Indian village looking inside the huts. MY DATE WITH HULK

The great day had finally arrived. Iwas going to have a dream date with Hulk Hogan for winning The Most Dedicated Fan Contest. Ever since Iwas three, Ihad been a Hulkamaniac. Ihad gone to every wrestling match Hulk had ever been in. Ihad gladly flown across the country just to see my idol perform in the wrestling ring. I could just see him standing in the doorway flexing. My heart started to flutter just thinking about him. Ihad done my hair six times over, and Ihad gone through my entire closet before Ihad decided on a red sweater and a black skirt. Isat in the kitchen to wait. The house was quiet except for the ticking of the clock on the wall. My two older brothers were at a party and my parents were at a restaurant. Tick, tick, tick, tick. The seconds seemed to take hours and Hulk was late already. 'Ding, dongl* rang the doorbell. My heart skipped a beat as Iran to open the door. Iflung itopen. Iwas disappointed to see a burly, obese man in a tuxedo with arms that looked like sausages. “ Are you Sarah McLaghlin?' he asked in a low voice. “Yes," I answered quietly. 'I'm sorry to say that something came up and Hulk had to cancel your reservations at Pierre's, but he'll gladly talk to you over a Big Mac at McDonald's,’ he added hopefully. My high hopes fell with a big crash. What about the exotic French restaurant I was supposed to go to? Oh well. I'm lucky enough to be able to meet him. 'I guess that'll have to do,* Isqueaked out. Icould feel the tears welling up in my

“Come on,* the man ordered. Ifollowed him into the driveway and jumped into his dumpy, little yellow Mazda. We both say silently staring straight ahead, our eyes on the road. We arrived in no time flat. He parked next to a yellow, stretch limo, and I could see the crowds of people in McDonald's. The fat man escorted me into McDonald's and we squeezed our way through the crowds toward the center of attention. There was Hulk sitting in a booth for two wearing a tuxedo. Ifelt myself blushing as Iwas pushed into the seat across from him. 'Sorry, Hon, no time to eat or talk. Gotta do a video.' He stood up to go and my high hopes fell again. 'Mr.. THE FUTURE

I was nine years old, and my birthday was coming up in one week. I lived in an apartment building on Broad Street. It was'nt all that superb but it was only temporary. One day I came home from school and found a package for me in the mail. It was from my Uncle Leo. I carefully opened the box and peeked inside. Something glistened. I lifted it out and examined it. it was some kind of crystal ball. I thought I saw something inside the ball so I looked very hard right into the middle of it. Something moved. I squinted my eyes to get a better qicture. It was a lady, wearing a white aprom. She was...... I squinted harder. She was holding something, some kind of metal object. A panl She was cooking. Suddenly she dropped the pan. She ran to the........ the sink and put her hand under the cold water. "Come set the table," cried my mother’s voice. I carefully put the ball back in its case and ran to the kitchen. There was my mother with her white apron on and she was cooking. I started getting a little queasy. I took the placemats out and started setting the table. Bam I Something hit the floor. My mother screamed, ran to the sink, and put her hand under the cold water. My stomach started hurting. After dinner I ran back to my room. Had I really predicted the future? I felt excited and scared. All at once. My mind went blank and I collapsed on my bed and fell fast asleep. In the morning I looked at the crystal ball again. I saw people in black, standing around......a stone square. They were crying. It must have been a funerall "Harder, harder," I said to myself," I must look harderl" I screamed and threw the ball to the floor. The grave was minel

There was the penl X drove over to it carefully, got out of the c a r , and touched the pen. X immediately changed back into human form. Well, I sure have a lot of explaining to do for missing a day of school.

SHORTY BY Libby Enright 3 / 1 0 /8 8

W h e n I was drinking some coke I thought to myself, "This needs something more," so I looked in my mother's cabinet for something weird-looking. I found a bottle, and inside was a liquid that was purple. I read the label: Drink this to feel great! S u d d e n l y I thought, "This would be perfect." I drank it all. Innediately I became one inch tall! "Oh, my goodness!" I said in a small voice. I walked into my mother's roo m and yelled out, "Mother, MOM." She answered, "Yes, dear, where are you?" as she came out of the b a t h r o o m with soap on her face. I said, "Mom I'm down here on the floor." She asked me, "Have you d runk that purple stuff again?" I screamed up to her, "yes." She said "Come here and I will hel p you." I replied, "Okay." My mother picked me up and gave me some kind of potion and slowly I returned to normal again. I thought to myself, "Yea." I hugged my mom.

Warning: Never Offer Your Grandmother "Jolt" Oh, great! My parents went to lunch and left me to take care of my weird grandmother. She always bossed me around and screamed at me. "James!" she shrieked. "Come here." I put my hand on the cold white door and slowly pushed it open. She was sitting in her chair knitting when she shrieked,"Get me some Jolt." I went to the fridge, grabbed a Jolt, and gave it to her. I turned around and read a note that my mom left me. It said,"Honey,do NOT give your grandmother Jolt. Love, Mom-" I carefully turned around only to find her swinging on the chandelier. I shouted, "Get off of there!" She said,"Ok" and jumped legs first and knocked me down. Then she ran in our humongous living room and hid. I slowly pushed my aching body off the ground. Then I walked clumsily into the living room. My eyesslipped carefully by every detail of the room. I saw the antique closet. Thinking that she might be in i t , I walked over to it and opened it. Then she popped out from under a couch and nailed me in the face with a water balloon. I fell and hit my head on a chair and got a giant bump. The anger was bubbling up inside of me. I thought revenge. I went into my room, put on my army suit, and stuffed a B—B pistol, water balloons, tiny throwing spikes, and a Gotcha gun in my pocket. I went into my mom s and dad s room and she popped out from behind the curtains.Just as she was going to throw a water balloon at me, I threw the spikes at the balloon and it blew up in her face. She was drenched. Before she could move, quick on the draw, I pulled out my Gotcha gun and shot a green paint pellet at her face. She looked like Kermit the Frog and I couldn t help laughing. While I was laughing, she ran into the living room and hid. I suddenly stopped laughing and ran after her.I checked under the chair where she hid last time. However, she jumped out of the closet and hit me in the behind with a water balloon. Immediately I jumped up and sent a red, green, and brown Gotcha pellet flying at her. She looked like something that my sister cooked once. Then I had an idea. I ran into my dad's art gallery and hid. In the center of the room hangs his favorite painting. It has a glass box covering it, and if you touch it, a net will fall on you. Suddenly Grandmother came in to hide. She went to the center of the room where the painting was. I pulled out my B-B gun and shot the glass box. Suddenly a big net dropped right on her. She turned back to normal after awhile and I rewarded myself with a sundae. Afterl finished it, I turned around and found her downing a Jolt again! Jamey Palmer

The Genie George

I opened a bottle and a genie appeared. The genie's name I told him was George. He asked me what my first wish was. that when I wanted to buy something, I would snap my fingers and the amount of money needed would appear. He asked me for my second wish. I told him, " I wish my family and I wouldn't die and I would live up to thirty, no higher. My mom and dad would stay the same age i f they wanted." "What is your final wish?'he said. Hopefully since I had wished for for so much I wished for three more wi shes. He had a surprised look on his face. I don t think that's It said, "The allowed," he told me. DREAM DATE

Ohmigod' I couldn’t believe it! I, Danielle Rees, was actually going on a date with nhmiaod - River Phoenix! I could just have died! I danced over to the phone and called Lorena. I excitedly told her about winning the Teen Ifcal contest and about my dinner date with River! I exclaimed that I had nothing to wear, so M o m took Lorena and me to the Esprit Outlet. We spent an hour examining the merchandise until 1 spotted it. It was A black shiny tank top and a shiny gold puff-out skirt. Since the date was goi g night, I bought a jean jacket with gold sequins on it, in the shape of hearts. To top it of , bought black pumps with gold sequins. After shopping, I took a shower and blow dried my hair. I spent about an hour Putting on my make-up. Now it was time to get dressed. I slipped on my tank top, skirt, and s oes and made a few practice walks around my room. Knock, knock. I opened the door and my m o m walked in. "I just wanted to give you this," she said, handing me a little jewelry box. "Thanks," I said smiling. I opened the box. It was the prettiest pair of earrings I had ever seen. The earrings were gold and bulky and were just made for my outfit. Ding-dong. Ohmigod, he was here. I raced out of my room and » *he f«mt dloor Taking a deep breath, I opened the door. Putting on my most dazzling smile, I greeted Riven He wore a blue and black shirt and faded jeans. He looked better in real life than in the millions of posters I had of him in my room. After saying goodbye to M o m and Dad, we whisked away in his cool black Porshe to the Hard Rock Cafe. M y first impression was rocking music and people haying fun. The wait was twenty minutes, and, while we waited, River bought me an H.R.C. pin. It looked like a gold mini guitar and had "Hard Rock Cafe" printed on it in black. "To remember me by," he said blushing. As if I’d ever forget this night. ■Phoenix party of two," the host called. We followed him to the table. After skimming the menu, a pretty waitress came and took our order. T w o cheeseburgers medium and two cokes," she repeated. After the waitress left, we talked about school, acting his family, our *J'j.ngs t0 d°’ eat, our favorite sport, actor, rock singer, etc. I wished this night would never end. The food was hot and delicious. At eleven o’clock he took me home. I had had the most wonderful time in my entire life. He autographed my jean jacket, and I will remember this night as long as I live. Danielle Rees

THF NIGHT 01 IT WITH HENRY WINKLER

I just called up KFRC - I was the tenth callerl Henry Winklerl I couldn't waitl

had won a trip to the deli with

I arrived to pick up Henry Winkler at his mansion. I saw the purple motorcycle that he had used on "Happy Days", smashed up in a hedge. Then I looked up at the vividly lighted pillars and saw what seemed to be a caretaker helping a feeble, old man down the enormous steps. Then I caught a glimpse of his hair that was moussed back. My Adam's apple was crawling up into my mouthl Fonzie, or Henry Winkler, was coming up to me. I had butterflies in my stomachl I saw himl He was hobbling up to me with a cane. I was so excited I didn't realize that the show he was in was in the 50's! He was about 80 years old. I quickly ran to my car and drove off! From now in I will listen to KMEL by William Hoover

THE DISAPPEARING JUICE It was amazing I I had drunk a bottle of disappearing juice. It all started in the kitchen. I was sitting in the kitchen when all of a sudden Mr. Martini, the Magician, popped up at the door. He was wearing a black cape and a hat. I asked him what he was in my house for. He said he was putting on a show for everybody on the block in their own houses. I was so happy I jumped all over the place with joy. I ran upstairs to tell my Mom that he was here. We went downstairs to watch him perform. He pulled seven white cloths out of his mouth and turned them into seven white doves. I was stunned. After a couple of more tricks we invited him to dinner. After that I snuck in and looked inside his suitcase, and then I saw it. A big bottle of disappearing juice. I wondered what it would be like to be tiny. I decided I wanted to try it. It was weird! It felt like being squashed by a giant. I was as small as a bug! That's how I lived the rest of my life! by Graham Stearns

THE MEDICINE

I was sick in bed. My mom had left me a note. drink the medicine on the desk.

The note said to

I drank the whole bottle. All of a sudden I tingled all over. I was shrinking. Even if I felt better, I was still amazed. Now I was ten inches tall! A f t e r m y se ns es c a me back, I w a l k e d around. I h a d forg ot te n about the heating vent because X had never fallen into it, but after a while it happened. X fell into it. The long dark drop felt like ten feet, even if it was only two and a half feet. I walked quickly down the corridor for about two hours. On the way, I picked up my mom's three inch pin. To me it was a great sword. I was seeing a lot of stuff that we had lost. All of a sudden, the owner of all the stuff popped out. It was a b i g pack ra t. I s t r u c k w i t h m y sword, or ra t h e r m y pin. The p a c k r a t sat t h e r e not k n o w i n g w h a t to do. I j u m p e d on the packrat. R i d i n g a p a c k r a t wa s th e m o s t fun I e v er ha d in my life. I saw a fat line moving in the road. It was the snake I had lost last summer. He was now three feet long. He remembered me. He felt that X was still his master. He showed this by coming over and letting me pet him. X used the snake as a rope to climb out, and the rat followed. When I was at the top I had returned to normal size. When my mom got home, she saw that X was playing with a rat and a sn ak e. She joked, "You're looking awfully big today." I almost killed her for that. Josh Shatsky

THE DAY MY PLAN BACKFIRED I was sitting in our pool reading a magazine, which I will not mention, on the plastic floating whale. It was a peaceful afternoon when all of a sudden, my brother jumped in and tipped the whale over. "Ahhl", I yelled. "You idiot!", I shrieked. * He swam off laughing. I was really angry! He would never get away with this. I secretly planned to show him a stinky fish I had caught that morning. He hated fish. It was night time. We were watching a movie when my brother said, "I'm going to sleep." I turned off the T.V., walked into the kitchen, and grabbed the fish from the freezer. I went back down to his room. I held the fish in front of my face and opened the door. He looked at me and yelled, "Get that wretched thing out of here!" He slammed the door, and the awful fish hit the door. Before I knew it, it slid down my throat. I screeched, yelled, and shouted. In my head, I knew my plan had back fired. By Neil Chai

THE NIGHT OF LUXURY

It was 4s00 p.m. I had to make a data* Z callad Belinda Carslila and aakad her to go out at 7s00. Sha said, "Sura." I said, "Well, see you tonight." Then she replied, "Come over to my place." "OK", I said happily. I went over to my closet and got ready. I put on my best clothes and sat down with a refreshing Cherry Coke. I turned on the T.V. and watched Hollywood Squares. Well, it was soon time to go. I jumped excitedly into my Lotus, and off I went. When I arrived, I walked through the rose garden and climbed the brick steps to the main entrance. I knocked on the door and, she answered. Sha was wearing a gorgeous black dress with a red belt. "Hi", I replied. She said, "Hello." Slowly we walked into the beautifully decorated house. A table for two waited, lit by two candles. We sat down to some sparkling champagne. We put on her record "Heaven is a Place on Earth." The music was playing softly. I asked her how she liked her singing career. Sha said, "I like singing and making videos." I said, "What song do you like to sing most?" She answered, "I Get Weak."

Then she said, "What do you do?"

I replied, "I play ice hockey for the Chicago Black Hawks." She commented, "I think that would be fun." I said, "Yes, I love it." We started to eat our escargot and delicious, mouth watering steak. The steak was soft and easy to eat. "I have to go and get some sleep for my game tomorrow", I said. She said, "I'll be there." I said, "Goodnight", and slowly walked to my car. I quietly sat in my car, knowing the night was over, and sadly drove away. ■

A SMELLY DAY FOR CHRIS When I came home from school on Friday, I heard from my brother that his friend, Chris, was coming over on Saturday, April 1st, April Fool's Day! I had to play a trick on Christ! I thought for a minute; then I had an idea. I had to spraypaint my model tomorrow, and I could ask him if he wanted to watch. However, it wouldn't be spray-paint. It would be the stench-spray I'd gotten today in the mail. It was morning and Chris would be arriving at 10:00. I had to hurry! I had to spray him in an open area because it would smell like rotten food for days! I was all set up. Everything was in place. I went downstairs and asked Chris if he wanted to watch me spraypaint my model. He said, "O.K.!■ Finally, he followed me upstairs. We both sat down on the floor. I reached for the black paint, but I suddenly picked up the stench-spray and got him; PISHHHHHED! *AH HH H... " , he screamed. I love it. up while he was holding his nose!

I was cracking

I went to get my brother, but when I got back, Chris was gone. Later, I found him in the bathroom with soap on his face and he said, "You, nerd! Why did you do that? My mom is going to kill me!" He probably did get in deep, deep trouble. have a smelly day, but my day was a great one.

My Dinner With Howard Cosell Kevin 4/13/88

8*

I had met Howard Cosell by accident at a football game and asked hi m if he would meet me at Yank's restaurant on W e dnesday at six. When I was about to get into my car, a white lime, came and picked me up. At first the limo looked like a silver bullet cruising down the street. As I got into the limo, he took off before I even had time to shut the door. As we walked into the beauteous restaurant, we were seated immediately at a most elegant table. We both ordered steak, I thought I would die because it was so enormous. I said, "How is the sports world?" "Oh, iti's all right" he said. "Are you tired of people imitating you?" "No, I actually like it when people imitate me because it shows that they like me, and it gives me a good reputation." Through the rest of the dinner we didn't talk. When the waitress came bac k Howard ordered baked Alaska and I ordered lemon meringue pie. The waitress came back and everybody on the staff was with her. The y sang "Happy Birthday" to Howard. When Howard bent down to smell his dessert, his toupee fell off and caught on fire. After that, Howard ran out of Yanks, and I never saw him again.

WHITTACKER MANSION

It wa s th e ee ri e ni gh t of O c t o b e r 31. Th e w i n d wa s h o w l i n g around the old sinister Whittacker Mansion at midnight. There were evil rumors about the Whittacker Mansion being haunted. The m o o n g a ve off little light, and the tr ee s c r a c k l e d as they swayed. Leaves fell from the sky and the black clouds just about c o v e r e d the sl iv er of the m o o n in the sky. A little shower started to fall - plink, plink, plink. Ra ch el sq u a t t e d lo we r until she co ul d see t h r o u g h the du st y window of the Whittacker Mansion. All the lights were turned out so Rachel could barely see anything except for a few inches past the window. Rachel knocked on the door; no answer. She knocked again; no answer. She unlatched the door and went in. Rachel felt very jittery, but she walked farther into this mysterious, old house. There were cobwebs all over the beautiful chande liers. The living room was covered with rats, beetles, and other insects. Rachel walked into the bedroom; dressers stood with the drawers m i s s i n g and b o o k s w i t h the pa ge s ri p p e d out of them. Rachel looked over her left shoulder, and there sitting in the corner was a gorgeous, antique, king-size bed with a gruesome corpse lying right on top. Rachel screamed a long, harsh scream. She ran out of the house as fast as her legs could carry her. From that time on, no one dared to go near that suspicious, petrifying house once called the Whittacker Mansion. Amanda Mitchell

The Day I Became A Bar of Soap

One day I was sitting on the shelf with the other bars of soap. Suddenly I was picked up, and thrown into one of those enormous shopping carts. I lay there on top of a pack of bologna. Then I rode around for a very long while, smushed between catfood and a bag of apples. I said to one of the apples, "Could you move your stem a bit?” "Why, of course, deary,” she said, and she moved it over. Then came the dreaded moment. I heard the cashier's voice saying,"Item 6023, item 10118." I was bought, taken out into the real world away from my home. "Help," I cried! "Shut your wrapper," hissed the catfood. Soon I was at the bottom of an ugly, scratchy, brown box, almost getting flattened under enough groceries to last anyone half a century. Then the box with me in it, was put into a very fancy and elegant limousine. The ride to the gigantic mansion where I was brought wasn't glorious, but it wasn't too horrible. When we arrived at the mansion, I was carried inside. I wish I could have seen the sights in the rooms we traveled through, because I heard many "oohs"and ahhs from above. Then, a human being of great size unpacked the box, and to my surprise I found myself in a beautiful kitchen with chandeliers, gold faucets, and ivory tiles. On a silver platter I was taken up endless circular stairs with golden handrails. I was unwrapped and placed on a gold soap dish in a huge bathroom with a chandelier, ivory tiles on the floor, and a china bathtub. Now every morning the President's wife refreshes me. I wouldn"t change places with anyone. By Abby Kojola

APRIL FOOLS i 11

It w a s t h e n i g h t b e f o r e A p r i l Fool's, and I wa s the only one awake. I was planning my chicanery when I was rudely interrupted by the annoying barking of the German canine across the fence. My plan was unstoppable. Well, I've said that for the last three years, but this time I was going to get my sister. My plan had three parts. The first phase of my plan was not the best, but it would sure enrage my sister. As soon as my unwakable sister was asleep, I crept into her room and put a sardine in each of her notebooks. After that, I cut her hair to a buzz. My plan was matchless because I had a day off from school and Alex, my sister, didn't. What a day I was going to have! It was 8:46 a.m. and my sister had gone to school. I sneaked into her classroom and set up the traps in her desk, like mouse traps that would make her yelp very loudly. I put chewed gum on all of her papers which would get her into trouble. Of course I would be grounded for a month, but it would be worth it. How embarrassed she must have been right at this moment! At t h r e e o ' c l o c k she came h o m e sc r e a m i n g and y e l l i n g and quite angry. What a sight she was! David Glynn

Help!1

I was trapped in a vacuum cleaner and I couldn't get out!

I had been turning on the vacuum whan I accidentally got sucked up. I searched everywhere but it was too dark in there to find anything. I was all by myself at home, and I had wanted to clean the house and surprise my mom when she got home. It was very boring inside the machine. I was standing next to a h u g e b a ll of d o g fur. I d e c i d e d to start lo o k i n g around. I suddenly bumped into something huge. I touched it, and it felt strange. It was my rubber band, a lucky charm for me. Now my luck would probably change and I'd get out sooner or later It was time to plan my escape. I thought and thought. Suddenly, it hit me! I would try and unzip the bag a little; then I could reach the "reverse" button to pull myself out. Brilliant! I tried and tried. flipped the switch.

Luckily, I finally got it!

I reached up and

My plan had worked! I got out even before my mom got home. I f i n i s h e d th e h o u s e w o r k an d relaxed. T h a t wa s the scar ie st incident I ever had! Robin Johnson

My Dinner Date With Bono

E

Bono and I went to the Hard Rock Cafe in his Lamberghini. The Lamberghini ride was spectacular. We both ordered cheese burgers and large cokes to drink. When we started to eat our hamburgers,I saw my best friend with River Phoenix. Then I turned around and saw the rest of the band from U 2 ! Bono asked me if it was o.k. to have lunch with us. I said it was fine with me. When they came to our table, they started asking me if, I could go to their mansion. I didn't know what to say. I asked Bono if it was o.k. to go see my friend. Then, like five minutes later, Bono wanted to take me to the mansion, so we left, leaving everything we had ordered on the table. When we got to their gigantic mansion, Bono showed me his whole house, The backyard was beautiful and huge. The bedrooms were as big as a swimming pool. Bono's bedroom was the biggest there. They had two very cute kittens and three small puppies. I was getting a little tired, so I asked Bono if I could lie down for a while on his couch. I went to sleep with a kitten on my arms. When I woke up I yelled to Bono and told him he could come to my house so my family could meet him. Finally we got to my house and my sister and my two brothers came outside screaming. At the end of the date, we talked, and he gave me six free tickets to their next concert. Then he left in his gorgeous black Lamberghini. I had had the best time of my whole life. THE DAY I BECAME GREG LOUGANIS'S SAMMY BY Gaelyn

I was lying amongst all the diving medals, towels, and swimsuits in Greg Louganis's old red Speedo bag. He's had it since he was seven. I am a Sammy ( or what used to be called a chamois, a spongy type of towel that helps dry off swimmers, divers, etc.....) Greg was just about to do a double flip with a half twist off the ten-meter platform in the Nationals. I knew he would win. I was so excited because he had chosen me to come instead of Jack and Susy. Oh I'd better tell you about them. They are my fellow Sammys. Well, Jack is a year old and a greenish-blush color. Susy is twelve months and bright pink. Well, of course, I'm yellow. Oh, here he came now, and I was stiffening with excite ment. He grabbed me out of the bag. I just couldn't wait to tell Jack and Susy. He was climbing up the stairs to the tenmeter. I could tell he wasn't nervous because his hand wasn't shaking. When he was all ready to go, he tossed me down to the pool deck. Ouch! I hate it when he does that! I was watching him very carefully. There he went- WOW! A perfect ten! He hopped out of the pool, grabbed me, and hugged his coach. Then I sponged hi m off and got him perfectly dry so he could go get his gold medal. Boy, was I proud of him. So, Sammy Juniors, how was that for a story? Now get to bed.

My Pet Troll Trollip. my toy dwarf, is as tail as a smurf, three apples high . He is w ell proportioned for a dwarf. Each hand bears one less than the regulatory number of fingers. No one knows the number of toes he has hidden under the knee-high, protective covering of coarse, layered, long green fur . His rustic, hot pink tunic is fastened around his waist with a shim mery gold cord. Unlike the blue smurfs, Trollip has a flesh-tone face and hands and wears fuchsia pink clothing. His overall appearance gives him the ability to camouflage himself among various flowers-cyclamen. azaleas, carnations. Long, course wisps of chalky white hair flow from under his cap in all directions like the flowering branches of a weeping cherry. Projecting from his face are two large, sad, cow like eyes, deeply sunk among rows of wrinkles. His uplifted, quizzical worried eyebrows are lost in the superabundance of hair. A ski-jump nose hovers over an innocent smile. Other trolls seem cruel and ugly, but mine is intrepid and full of spunk. Sarah

The Tennis Match

The day finally arrived. I was going to attempt to pi tennis match against the best girl on the tennis latter. I tensely on the bench, gazing at the gallery. The crowd app as the opponent advanced to the net, and as I, also, procee--- -take my position. She reached for a ball and swung her arm high in the air, letting it down so hard that when it reached my side I cou l dn ’t even touch it. Soon the score was three games to nothing. Her favor. I had to do something. I served the ball and let my feet take over. I sped up to the net and slammed the ball so hard it flew over the fence. 1 stayed at the net for the next three games to volley the ball. The girl I was playing gaped in surprise over my suddenly playing so well. Soon we were well into the last game. It was my serve. I hit the ball as hard as I could. She returned it right down the middle which made a great opportunity for me. I knocked it into the corner. The match was finished. I had won-! Claire

The Civil War The Civil War was a war between the states, Where different people showed for slavery their hates. Abe Lincoln was a daring man, Doing what we not often can. Getting the nation to come through, Was not such an easy job to do. When Sherman marched to the sea, It wasn't good news for the South or Lee. Grant and Lee they met one day, Because Lee had something he had to say. The words that Lee had to tell, Are, I surrender, now all's well. Sara Gilliland

GOLDILOCKS Once upon a time there dwelt a young mischief-maker named Goldilocks. She was known all around New York City as a naughty, mangy little girl. One day she was putting on horrid pitch-black eye-liner and flaming pink lipstick when she found that she needed to get some new junk jewelry. Her mother wouldn't let her out of the house with all of the ugly make-up on, so she snuck out her bedroom window and left. Goldilocks was enraged! She walked and walked and rode the subway for miles and miles until the conductor kicked her off for her gross remarks. Goldilocks found herself in a remote little town, but just kept on walking. She came to a small house and crept inside to find some junk jewelry. First she found three spiked collars. The first one was too small, the next one she tried on was too big, and the third one fit her perfectly! Grabbing the collar, she heard someone opening the door. Dodging up the stairs, she tripped over the long tassels of leather hanging from her skirt. Quickly Goldilocks slid down the stairs. She looked up and there was a family of punks- a father punk, a mother punk, and a baby punk. They all had purple spiked hair, leather jackets, and leather pants! Goldilocks stood up and ran. The punks never saw Goldilocks again, and neither did anyone else. ANNA

The Civil War 1861 to 1865 WMany people lost their lives. Lee on the South and Grant on the North, Both moved their armies straight forth. While fighting some were brave, But many were the cunning slaves. Some were trying to escape From this horrible, frantic estate. In a hay wagon they would be, Hoping to enter a state that's free. While the battle did progress, Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address. Which was a wonderful speech: "All men are created equal", he tried to teach. The issues of slvaery and states rights, Was behind this horrible fight. But finally the North won And those who died were not forgotten. All the men that were alive Went home to their wives. And all the men were happy, Because the slaves were free!

My Trip to Wool worth's One night when I settled down to go to sleep, a review of the day passed through my mind. About half way through the day's review, I came to writing. What an awful period that was! Mrs. A. made me "isolate" myself because I w a s talking with Rachel. I started to doze and then dream. I dreamt it was after school and I was going to the shopping center. I strode into Woolworth's to buy some gum. There behind the counter was Mrs. A. What a surpr is e ! •Hello, Erin," she said. "Uh, hi," wou Id die.

I said glumly.

It was really she.

I

thought

I

"Would you like to buy a new writing folder or maybe some erasable pens?" she asked. She was we aring a high wa isted gypsy-like skirt and a shirt that matched. On her shirt w a s a pin that said, "Hi, my name is Penelope!" Her clonky bright blue necklace clashed with her skirt. She looked awful. "No,

I'm getting gum," I replied.

I purchased my gum at another counter and started out the door. Mrs. A. called sweetly after me, "Don't do your homework so I can put you in study hall." That was one of the most horrid dreams I ever had. To this day I believe that at the end of school, she probably drives off to work her shift at Woolworth's. Erin

The Three Little Pig3 in the City.

Once upon a time in the c ity of Edmonton th e ir lived three lit t le pigs. They lived in an older part of the city. Their street was the la st of ten streets planned to be destroyed by a house building company, the owner of this company was Mr. Wolf. The pigs were regulary getting threats from Mr. Wolf because they would not sell their houses to him. They also owned the only shop in tne neighborhood. Mr. Wolf also wanted this shop to be distroyed as well. Mr. Wolf had a gang of wolves called the Wolf Gang to get people out of houses. The pigs were haveing regular attacks from this gang One day they got a le tte r from this gang saying that they would be severely beaten and th e ir homes destroyed if they had not abandoned th e ir homes by Friday midnight, w ith the day being Thursday they had lit t le tim e to think. By Friday noon they had it, once the Wolf Gang and Mr Wolf had hooked up the dynamite,-the lit t le pigs would lure them into the house and trap them inside and then set off the dynamite. At midnight the pigs heard the Wolves van pull up, they watched the Wolves hook up the dynamite. One pig was behind the front door, the other two were on the f ir s t flo o r balcony. The f ir s t pig then opened the door and threw a stic k at the wolves, w ith that the wolves carne racing a fte r him. He ran through the house and out the back door and then he blocked the door. The other two pigs had blocked the front door and were w aiting fo r th e ir brother to come around. As soon as he was out of the way, the pigs blew up the house and a fte r that they lived happily ever after. Colin

Blossoming Tree

Gazing at the blossoming tree, I realized it wasn't just a bunch of limbs and a couple of flowers. The uneven leftover ant trails crawled gradually through each branch like a confusing maze. Every few inches sprouting flowers popped out where only the smallest insect could hide. The soft velvet petals became shade for any insect. The sun beat through the top of the tree. Dusty rays of light shone on the branches, a good -Jjj area for insects to sunbathe. Olive-green moss painted the trunk. Rapids of ants streamed down the jagged bark while swift, colorful ^ytterflies paused first on one sunset' pink flower and then on the next. A lake of petals, spotted with slate-gray mud, flowed around the bottom. Bottle-green leaves were poking out of little spaces wherever there was room to grow. Small veins crawled through them. The wind rushed through the tree and the last autumn leaf fell like a feather down to the ground below. Cecily

The Gorgeous Duckling Once upon a time there was a snobby,

gorgeous,

duckling named Roxxy who lived in Newport Beach.

young

She was about

one foot tall with blue eyes, blond feathers, and a breathtaking body.

Her tail was short, but cute.

One day at about 2:30 PM, Roxxy was lying on the beach catching some rays when her boyfriend jogged up to her and told her he was MdumpingH her.

This came so suddenly that she

couldn't help bursting into tears, her mascara running down her face.

All her ex-boyfriend did was kick sand in her face.

She

ran to her buggy and drove away.

She dashed upstairs, jumped on her bed, and cried herself to sleep.

When she woke up she went to the mirror to view herself.

She looked very ugly.

The mascara was still running down her

face, her lipstick was smudged, and her feathers were all in a tangle.

She thought to herself, "No wonder he dumped me.

I'm an

ugly duckling."

The duckling lost confidence in herself.

From that day on,

she let her feathers turn a dirty orange, her body grow fat, and her tail droop listlessly.

Still, however, her lovely blue eyes

continued to sparkle glamorously. Tucker
