Second Grade History

1986-87 has been an exciting year for Hiss Gilbert and her second graders.

Here are some of the fun and interesting things we did: October: We planted peas in pots in the classroom and watched them grow.

Then we took them to Bobby's garden and planted them and lots of other things in our class garden there.

We went to a farm to buy pumpkins. While we were there we ate delicious apples.

The next day we took the pumpkins to the University Branch Convalescent Hospital and with the elderly people decorated them.

We also wore our Halloween costumes to the hospital.

November: We learned about Korea and China. Joshua taught us how to write some Chinese characters. We made puppets and performed a Korean fo 1kta 1e .

December: Nancy started singing with us once a week. She taught us lots of fun songs! We sent Christmas cards to a school in Korea. We sang Christmas carols at Filoli. We wrote autobiographies which we gave to someone for a holiday gift. We left our shoes outside the classroom door.

Sinster Klaus came and left candy in them! We learned about Christmas customs in other countries.

January: Danilyn, Eden and Beth came to our classroom to teach us about The Gambia.

They showed us slides and some clothes and dances from the Gambia. A reporter and photographer from The Times T r ibune also came.

There was an article in the paper about our class.

February: We received letters, drawings, and photographs from students at the Marakissa School in The Gambia.

They told us a lot about their school garden project in The Gambia. We wrote to them and drew pictures about life in America.

March: We made a book called Once There Was A Tree and we showed it to the school during chapel. We went to the Baylands and learned a lot about the plants and animals that live in the marsh there. We had a bake sale and raised $100.00 for the garden project in The Gambia. We began practicing our musical "Winnie-The-Pooh."

April: We worked hard on our play and we gave a fabulous performance for the school and our parents.

It was a big hit! We also performed at the Convalescent Hospital. We went to Hidden Villa for the day. We went for a fun hike and played with the farm animals. We went to the garden to harvest vegetables.

A photographer from "The Palo Alto Weekly" took photographs of us while we were gardening.

There was an article in that paper about our garden project and the one we were helping in The Gambia.

M a y : We learned about endangered species. We wrote to wildlife organizations in Washington, D.C. to ask for more information. We wrote reports about endangered animals and read them to the first graders. We went to Searsville Lake. We wrote biographies about some people who live at the Convalescent Hospital.

June: We went to the Convalescent Hospital to deliver our biographies, have an ice cream party, and say good-bye 'till next year!

Highl i g h t s of the Third Grade Year

We felt like Charlie Brown as we made our trip to the pumpkin patch. We made great faces on our pumpkins, and gave them to our adoptive grandparents.

For Halloween we had a fun party. We all dressed in costume. We particularly remember Matt's curly blue wig.

For Thanksgiving time we had a big feast. We all brought food to share.

It was fun to become a pilgrim or an Indian for a day.

The Christmas program was wonderful and we sang like ange1s !

And, yes, we all "broke our legs" this year. Our production of Stone Soup was so well performed, we've heard murmurings of Broadway!

All in all we've had a year full of fun adventures.

Hopefully our heads are full of new information (like how to multiply).

Hopefully we've grown. Now we're ready to be, "fourth grade somethings!"
