One day I found some magic shoes.

I put them on and ] danced and danced. And then I had to go to dinner but the shoes untied themselves. And from that night on I couldn't find the shoes.

I did not ever find them.

Kristin Hepper One day I found some shoes and a wand in the woods.

I decided to find out where they came from.

Just then a wizard came up a little path. My, my, said the wizard. Where are my shoes and wand? They're over here, I said.

We're on the tree stump. Thank you for showing me where my shoes and wand were. Do you want to come to my house for tea? All right but I have to be home for dinner.

It's a long way. Oh that's okay. It's only 3:00. So off we went. We didn't talk for a little of the time. But then he said, what is your address?

Why? Because my magic wand can take you home. All right, this is it: 1819 Doris Dr., Menlo Park, CA. 9^025. Okay I know it now. This is my house. You have a nice home. Let me tell you about his house. He had a pink house and a green door.

Some yellow flowers were in front of his house. A red little brick path too. I have some ice-cream for you. Do you want some? Yes please I said. Thank you Mr. Wizard. When I was eating the ice-cream I asked the wizard if there was any more ice-cream.

It started to get dark. The wizard whizzed me home.

Sarah Myers When I ran down into the deep dark cave, I found some dirty diamonds.

So I took them home and washed them, Then I put them in my room.

Then I went outside to play.

I came back in and a little elf came out of it. 1 showed my dad. He fainted.

I woke him up. I took them back.

I never saw them again.

One day the funniest thing happened. This elf walked in my house and he couldn't find his gold. He checked his pocket and he checked outside but he couldn't find his gold. And then I started to help him. And then he remembered he left his gold in green land and I said, What is green land? And he said. I have to go!

Good-bye. Next time I come I'll see you.

John Massaro A kite is fun to fly. It is fun to run with.

I wish I could have a kite to fly. A kite is fun to have.

It is fun to pick the colors. We have 2 kites. We will like another one. Yes, we would like another one. Why don't you buy one for yourself?

Katie Dillon I was sitting reading when I suddenly heard a knock on the door.

It was grandma. She wanted to play with me. And I said yes, you may. And we played ball. She was good playing ball. Then we swam and I said, you want a race to the end of the pool? and she won the race. Then we watched TV. Then she had to go.

Jeffrey Beaver One day the funniest thing happened. A frog said to me, do you want to have a party? Yes yes.

Then there was a party. They had fun. Then a ghost showed up. This was the funniest.

Ben Burton When I ran down into the deep, dark cave, I found a baby bear.

The little bear had blue eyes.

And the little bear's mother came and I began to run and run.

And I ran and I never came back again. The end.

It was a magic carpet. On the magic carpet there was a little man. He came to me.

He had a funny voice. This is what he said. Gorl, gorl. I didn't understand him. I tried to say gorl, gorl. But I said brp.

I said gbie.

He got back to his saucer and I said dbrp because I couldn't say gorl, gorl. He said bye. He went back to outer space and I went back to my home. The end.

Brandon ClaDD One day I found some magic shoes.

I put them on and I was the most beautiful fairy in the whole world. And my wish came true.

I was happy for the rest of the year.

One day I found some magic shoes.

I put one on. Then the shoe went up Ln the sky with me toot Higher and higher it went. I was afraid.

Just then the shoe went down and so did I. Down, down, down! 11 wa s a long fall. I ran inside, I told mom. She fainted.

I woke her up.

She told dad. We told everybody.

The end.

Hiroshi Chai I would like to be a kite that would fly high in the sky. And I would have a lot of fun up in the air flying. A kid likes me and loves me and keeps me for his own and not give me away. And he would keep me clear and would like my life forever.

Anna Crosby Davy Parsons Look!

I think I see a magic carpet flying toward us.

It's coming very close. Run! It's following uSo Run in the bushes and hide.

It's landing right now.

It landed. Let's have one ride on it. Come on, just one ride on it. Please, can we? Instead we went on their ride.

I said one ride and after all the ride is all finished the magic carpet just sat there like it was just so.

We put it in our living room and the next day it was gone.

And we looked for it. So we did not look for it anymore.

Regena Rosati One day the funniest thing happened. What? 0nc6 I put glue on my dad's toothbrush. Did he get mad! He didn't know who did it, but did he get mad! Yes he did. Did the glue get stuck on his teeth? No, but it got stuck on his toothbrush. Oh and then I put jam on my mom's fur coat and boy did she get mad.

And then I ran away. That's the end.

I would like to be a raindrop.

Pitter patter on the roof, splash puddle on the ground. My, what a storm today. Oh no the sun, it dried me up. I will rain tonight while the sun is asleep.

It's night now. Pitter patter on the roof, splash! More puddles. Yea, yea!

Sean Taube When I ran down into the deep dark cave I found a worm. It was brown and black. And it was reading a book. And it turned me little. He was magic!

I thought. I asked where he got magic. He said he couldn't tell me. I thought again. He could talk our language. And then said could you please tell me where? He said I will.

I was at Switzerland and I was in a store where a man sold magic carpets. He was about to go for a ride and I hopped on. He spilled some of his magic and then I was magic. Then I hopped off. Then I used my magic to come here and here I am.

One day I found some magic shoes and I put them on. They took me to a place with magic in the air.

That place was called Magic Land.

There were sparkles coming down from the sky. It was a very nice place. A fairy appeared. She was very pretty. She said, would you like to be a fairy too? I said, yes I would.

It was fun being a fairy with a wand.

I made magic.

Rebecca Lines One day I found some magic shoes and I put them on. And they fit and they were comfortable. But when I started to walk I kept doing back flips. And it was because the magic shoes always did back flips when someone walked in them. So I tried to get them off but it was pretty hard to get the magic shoes off when I was doing back flips.

But finally I got them off and I put them back where I found them and then I went home.

It took me all around the world. Then it took me in the clouds.

I went to sleep. Then I woke up. I was in space. It took me to another planet. The planet was boring so I woke up. What a dream!

Then it started to rain. Then the lettuce started and the garden started to grow and I was happy.

They were shiny and red. I put them on. They said, you have 3 wishes. My first wish is I want to fly. And suddenly I had wings, big ones too. My second wish was to go to Disneyland. Plop! There I was.

I was on the roller coaster We got off.

I had fun. I had no way to get home. So I used my wings to fly me home. My third wish I saved and then I went to bed Philip Insel One day the funniest thing happened. When I went with my dad and my mommy and I saw a tiger at the restaurant. And 1 tried to tell him, but no.

He doesn't listen. I will ask my mommy, she doesn't listen either. What shall I do? I know. I will keep it to myself.

I was so excited.

It would fly me everywhere and do all kinds of magic tricks. I put on the magic shoes and went out into the kitchen. My mother was making breakfast.

I said, good morning.

Look at my new magic shoes. My mother stared a moment. Very nice, she said and went on with her work.

I put on my clothes and said I wish to go to Walt Disney. And there I was at Disney World.

1 had a fun time.

It was getting dark.

I wished myself back, took off my clothes and went to bed.

Joshua Wong If I was a kite I could fly and blow in the wind.

I could go to the park. Wouldn't it be terrific?

Yes, it would be great.

I could have all different colors and I wouldn't have to wear all of the dopey clothes. You are right.

Second Grade Fables The Cjarn and the Sea Otter

Once there was an otter. He was just swimming along looking for food. All of a sudden, he spotted a clam. Yum, yum, yum! He dove down and the clam said, "Don't eat me because when you are in trouble I will help you." Right then a shark came and tried to bite the otter. At once the clam opened her shel1 and swam over to the shark and closed his mouth on the shark's tail as hard as she could! The shark swam away as fast as he could and was never seen again.

Moral: All of us, great and small, have need for each other.

The Rat and the Bear Once upon a time there was a rat.

He was playing around in the woods.

A hunter was walking along and saw the rat and he screamed and by mistake his gun went off. A bear was nearby and the bear saw the hunter and the bear screamed watch out to the rat. The rat was very grateful so he said, "1 will help you someday." Well that day came.

The bear was just playing around when a hunter was just about to kill him and the rat saw the hunter and the rat ran right to the hunter's feet and bit his foot. The hunter screamed, "Ow!" He ran off into the woods.

Moral: All of us, the great and the little, have need of each other.

One day old old fox told little fox that porcupine meat was delicious but it was very hard to get because of their quills! Then little fox told old old fox he would get some porcupine meat. So he went out of the den and into the world. He found a porcupine. He tried to attack it. He landed on it's quills and he came home with a stomach full of quills.

Moral: Actions speak louder than

The Dolphin and the Boy Once there was a boy on a cruise ship cruising along the coast of Kauai. The boy was leaning on the railing of the boat.

Suddenly the railing broke and the boy fell into the water. At the same time a dolphin appeared. The dolphin swam the boy to the cruise ship. The boy thanked the dolphin and the dolphin swam away. One day the dolphin was swimming close to the shore.

A man was about to shoot the dolphin for sport. The boy was there too. The boy ran towards the man and grabbed the gun and threw it in the water. The dolphin thanked the boy.

Moral: All of us animals need each other.

try p w U The Lion and The Fox Once upon a time there was a lion and he had a big steak. But he had no steak for his baby cubs, so he had to go out and get some for them. ' But right after he left, a fox came and took the steak to his den.Finally the lion came back and found that the steak was gone. But he saw the fox's trail so he followed the trail to the fox's den and he went inside and he looked at the fox's stomach.

There was the steak in the fox's stomach and the lion said, "Now since you have eaten my steak you have to give me a new one."

AND THE MORAL IS: DON'T TAKE WHAT ISN'T YOURS

The Baboon and the Gorilla Once upon a time there was a gorilla.

He was out hunting in the forest of Africa looking for food when a baboon jumped out of the tree. The gorilla was mad to see that the baboon was a better jumper than he was and he said, "Oh, I see you are a good jumper" (not really meaning it).

"Thank you," said the baboon, "Let's see you." "I, the great one, will do better than you," said the gorilla.

With these word the gorilla climbed the tree and jumped out of the tree and landed flat on his face.

Moral: Actions speak louder than words. ^

The Turt1e and the Water Snail One day turtle said, "Snail, I'll race you in a swimming race." "Okay," said Snail. "At the pond," said Owl, "and I will be the judge. We'll have the race tomorrow." The next day they had the race and turtle took his time, thinking that Snail could not win. But Snail won the race!

Moral: Slow and steady wins the race.

Stories How the Brontosaurus Got His Neck In 1,000,000 B.C. Adam and Eve started a circus. Every day Adam got more and more animals for the circus. They were putting on a show for all the plants to see. They had 100 dinosaurs. They had goats, pigs; 1eopards, and lions. They had birds, beavers, snakes, and zebras. They had weasles, cows, chickens, and roosters. They had bees, hornets, ants, caterpillars, and so, so, sooo many more.

So after that Adam and Eve went to bed, but before they did, they kiss all of the animals good night, except the dinosaurs. The dinosaurs got mad. So they went PLLLL. So Adam kissed them good night, but not Eve. She just polished her fingernails and put on lipstick. She went straight to bed.

In the morning , Eve's alarm clock went off. Beeeeeeeeeeeeee. So Adam and Eve woke up. They put on their coats and underclothes and jumped out the window.

When they got to the circus, Adam blew a bugle. Adam had 99 bugles left. Then he put the bugle down. Somehow the dinosaurs got out of their cages and the brontosaurus ate the bugles and the bugles stretched the brontosaurus1 neck so it was very long!

So that's why when the brontosaurus died they had a L-0-N-G neck.

How the Octopus Got His Section Cups Once upon a time an octopus was swimming he saw land. At this time he could walk land. So he got out of the water and he a house and he knocked on the door. The opened. He went ins.ide. He went upstairs and he opened one of the doors. He saw a boy throwing darts with suction cups on them.

He went under the dart board. Accidentally, the boy threw a dart and made all the other darts fall and the darts got stuck on the octopus. Oh, by the way the octopus name was Charley. Charley said, "Oh "Sorry," said the boy. "It1sail right," said Charley. Then Charley saw the boy's mother and she screamed, "Ahhhhhhhhh!"

Charley said, "Sorry, Miss. Good-bye!"

Charley went back to the water and swam away.

And so to this day, octopuses have suction cups on their legs. ^ ^ o*.

Once upon a time an octopus was walking in the ocean and he wanted to have more legs because he was tired and wanted more legs with which to walk. So he went to the wise old shark and said, "How can I get more legs?" and the wise old shark as usual said, "Bring me 1553 fish." The octopus said, "Okay. But give me a leg every day."

The shark agreed and so it went on and on and finally he received 15 5 3 fish. And that is how the octopus got his eight legs. ^

How the Zebra Got His Stipes Once there was a zebra in the zoo.

He wanted to get out of the zoo. So he pushed against the black bars and he got out. But he pushed so hard that he got all of the black bars all over his white coat. So from that day on, zebras have had stripes.

How the Bee Got 1t 1s Buzz Once upon a time there was a bee. He went off to get some honey. He flew through a house and hit a clock radio and his wing was hurt. He crawled in a hole in the radio and rested there till morning. Then the clock radio's alarm went off. "Beep, beep, beep, beep!" Then the radio went buzzzzzz!

It was so loud the buzzing went into his ears and radio speakers popped out of his ears. His brain turned into a radio and the radio's alarm never went off again.

That's what happened to all the bees and that is how bees got their buzz.

Once upon a time, a little teddy bear was walking along into the woods. He was all alone. Then he heard something. He could not see it because it was so dark. Well, he took out his flashlight that he always carried and a jack knife. He saw a bee and it got very frightened. The bee stung him. The stinger went in so deeply that when he pulled it out it left a little hole in his stomach. So that is how teddy bear got its belly button.

How the Pig Got Pink Once upon a time a pig was walking in her garden. A missile came blasting out of a rosebush. Before she noticed it she was on the missile and up in the sky. She thought she would never land and all of a sudden she fell off the missile. A boy and his mother were dying yarn pink. The pig landed right in the pot of dye. Poor old pig! Turned from white to pink.

And that is why pigs are pink.

How the Zebra Got His Stripes Once upon a time there was a horse.

It was a white horse in the zoo, and it ran away. His name was Zinbob. He was a big horse. So the owner was looking for him. So the next day Zinbob saw a black and white fence, it said wet paint, and Z'vnbob needed a scratch. He scratched himself against the fence so he got black and white stripes on him. A year later the owner was still looking for Zinbob.

There were signs saying, a horse missing, white horse 8 feet tall, call 327-6081. One day the owner saw a black and white striped horse. It looked like Zinbob because it was the same height as Zinbob. He called to Zinbob. Zinbob came running, so he knew it was his horse. Now I will call you zebra. That is why zebras have stripes. _

Swan and beaver lived in pond. One day, beaver was botheri g the swan family. ^ H ^ i f anythe cob's hit was, but he did it any way.) Well the cob got very mad and took a swing at beaver. He didn^t miss but he flattened out beaver s tail. So beaver went home with a sore tail. Everybody knows beaver s tail is never going to be the size was. So, that is how beaver got his flat tail.

How the Zebra Got His Stripes Once upon a time, a pure white horse was galloping in the woods. Suddenly he tripped and fell into a puddle of tar that men had put there. He ran home crying. He told his mom. His mom tried to wipe the tar off, but she couldn't. Actually, she got a little off but she left behind black stripes. She also couldn't get it off his mane or tail. So that is why to this day, zebras have stripes.

Why the Ostrich Runs Fast There once was an ostrich named Joey.

He was left out of all the games because he was stupid. He was so stupid that he didn't know what one plus one i£ (and neither do l). One day there was a race. Everyone was included. Now when ostrich heard about it he ran down to General Motors downtown and bought a big motor. When he went home he went one trillion miles every 10 seconds.

Wow!!!!! How do you think you could see him? His friends couldn't see him at all. So they all went down to General Motors also and got motors but theirs didn't go as fast as Joeys.

Joey won the race in 30 seconds. So that is why ostrichs run so fast.

Once upon a time there was a horse who had a very little bit of mane.

Then a very mean person came along and pulled as hard as he could on the horse's mane. Then the horse had longer hair. The man who pulled the horse's hair started to feel sorry for what he had done to the horse so he never did it again. But, from that time on, all horses had a long mane. +2 y f*

How Duck Got Her Feathers One day duck was gluing two pieces of paper together. The glue was on the table. Her elbow hit the table.

Then the glue spilled all over her.

"Oh, no!" cried duck. As quickly as possible duck ran into the kitchen.

She turned on the faucet. She tried and she tried to get the glue off but she could not get it off. She was so tired that she went to bed but her pillow was leaking feathers. She fell asleep. When she woke up she was covered with feathers and that is why from that day on ducks have feathers.

How the Zebra Got His Stripes Once upon a time there was a zebra.

He was trotting in the woods. Horse was painting his fence black. Zebra fell and hit the fence. He got black stripes. And that is how zebra got his stripes.

There was a class from C.A., Who were good most every day, The teacher said, "Wow!" School is out now, Let's play!

The Eoses Once upon a time there was an evil king who lived in an enchanted castle with his fairy alligator who lived in the moat. There was a very special stained glass window under water that you could look into the cellar. The alli­ gator used to always look in and see all the tools of the king. The king had a rose. The king had lots of wives. When he did not like one wife he would change her into a rose and put her in the garden with the others. The alligator knew this, but he didn't know how to break the spell.

Once he was trying to catch a mosquito and his tail slipped and broke the stained glass.

The spell was over. All the wives went running away. When the king saw this, he sent cut the wife catcher, he caught the wives and made them back into roses. The alligator couldn't free them, because there was no more stained glass.

At that time the stained glass grew and then the alligator saw a mosquito. He flicked his tail

He told the people that were holding us to take us to the cellar. We found a little hole in the cellar wall. We all crawled through it.

We found ourselves outside the castle. 'We all started running away. We got to my house and the door was locked. So I said our magic word, "Dwarf!" All of a sudden the door opened. V/e all cheered: We were home and we were safe!

Once I was going through a forest I saw a tree I had never seen before! It was gold and silver. At first I was scared, then I went closer and it moved closer. Then I saw a door on the tree! Suddenly, I woke up. I was in my bed. I was cold, but I got up and lurched to the window. There I saw the house I had visited

MY PET My pet is a dog named Maggie. She is a Gordon Setter.

Maggie has a black body with brown paws and nose. She is ten years old. I like her a lot because she is furry and cuddly, and sometimes I use her as a big pillow.

Maggie has a language that my family can understand. When she wants water she goes, "Wa wa wa wa wa." When she wants out, she goes, "Wururuf."

When my dog was a little puppy, my mom's friends took their dogs for walks while they rode their bikes. Well, one day my mom tried that. My dog kept on charging in front of the bike. My mom again.

I think my dog is very strange.

CHOCOLATE !

One day when I was going to Cocolat, I saw my friend, so I stopped to talk awhile. She told me that she had just gone to Cocolat and had seen a miniature chocolate mansion for $30.00.

She took me in to see it. I decided I would buy it, so I went to get in line. Just then I realized that I only had $28.00.

"Ummm, I only have $28.00,"

I said to the clerk.

"Gimme that then, sonny."

I gave him my money and left. On my way home, I felt the house getting heavier. Then the box broke, and the house kept on getting bigger. At that time I was walking across a vacant lot.

I decided to sit down and rest.

I put the chocolate down next to me. I was so tired that I fell asleep. When I woke up, I found myself sitting next to a life-sized, white, chocolate mansion!

I walked up to the door and there was a note on the door that said: Dear Erin, This is your house.

It will melt in one year, so enjoy it.

Last night, April 24, the famous puppet maker, "Gepetto", was started when Pinocchio came to life in his house on MulberryStreet in the Lost Valley.

It happened about ten o'clock.

Gepetto claims that it was a fairy who brought his puppet to life.

When Gepetto was inter­ viewed, he said, with happy tears, that he was so glad he had a son, and he started to cry.

He had three pets. Gepetto's pets are a cat, a fish, and a cricket. They said, "We were, all surprised to see'Pinocchio come to life. Last night we were all playing in Goldy3 the fish's bowl, when all of a sudden, there was a big, bright flash of light coming from g inside Pinocchio. We were all «Jr-o frightened!" q q </\, Detectives are investigat­ ing the mystery now.

OUR TIME CAPSULE

We're sitting at our desks.

The year is 7777- Today is Sunday. We go to school on Mon­ days, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

In history we've just finished learning about World and Soace War XI. The people on Earth fought with the Martians on Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus.

Pearl Harbor was bombed for a second time, but instead of Japan, Pluto did it. America and Russia were the two friend­ liest countries in the war.

When the war ended, Pluto was destroyed by Earth. Everyone else turned out to be fine, and Pearl Harbor now looks as good as new.

For Easter vacation we are going to the Moon's ultimate vacation resort.

It has 100 s m s and 200 swimming pools.

In one room you can fly because they haven't put in the gravity yet.

Our teacher is saying, "Time for lunch now!

Get your auto­ matic, Self Lunch-Making Lunch Boxes!"

THE NOSE TRANSPLANT On the fifth day of March, there was a man that had just made up his mind to have a nose transplant.

"But why a nose transplant?" said his psychiatrist.

"Well, because I want to be really special," he answered.

Pwo days later he played the California lottery.

"Oh my gosh, I wonl" he screamed.

The next day he and his new wife went to the lottery pay-off place and received eight billion dollars. He paid the I. R. S. half a billion dollars so he would never have to pay taxes again, (or with his money he would get the best lawyer in the world).

Like a flash, the I. R. S. accepted.

"Now why did I'want a nose transplant? I must have been very poor with no more hope to be a very special person. A nose trans­ mit was my first pick," he said.

He woke up in the psychiatrist's office.

"Well, what's wrong with me?" he cried.

"I gave you your wish.

Feel your nose."

"Oh no. It's eight feet long! that money!"

BEANSTALK TAKES OVER REDWOOD CITY ?EDWOOD CITY, CA. The people of Redwood City are yelling with (anger about the huge beanstalk that is taking over their homes.

Chief Nike says, "We got a scientist from Stanford University fo come and fifrd out what we can do to stop it." He also says that a boy by the name of Jack Enrich claims that he had gotten three brown, ugly, and small beans at school. He says his mother threw them out the window.

Professor Thoro thinks that the beans are what caused the >eanstalk and, from his research, he thinks he is right. He says the only way to stop the beanstalk is to get a huge ax and cut the trunk. This will take a lot of money, also.

"It seems to be Jack's bean­ stalk," said Detective Jones, referring to Jack Sprat, a local boy.

"Once I got the beans, my mom got so mad she threw them out the window. She's the guilty one.

WOODSIDE, CA. It has been re­ ported that strange things have been happening in Woodside, CA. Objects were seen rolling down the grassy hill on April 19* 1986.

Today Miss Red R. Hood got sent to jail for shooting her grandmother with a machine gun.

She was on her’way to her grand­ mother's house to give her some food. Miss Hood thought it was the Big Bad Wolf, but it was just her grandmother lying in her bed, asleep.

Detective John Hochwell says, "There was a wishing well at the top of one of the hills, but no pennies were in it. A trail of pennies led downward and into a bush, and in the bush was a pail of pennies. The objects were reported as looking like a boy and a girl.

Miss Red. R. Hood might be sentenced to death. In her jail cell she said, "If it was to happen again, I would have looked at the face first."

TRIGGER My puppy is a golden lab. She is golden and very small. She is about nine weeks old.

The way we got her was she was running across a street in the storm, and she almost got hit by a car. So my dad picked her up and asked around to see if anyone knew her. But nobody did. So my dad brought her home.

Whenever she sees somebody, she jumps on you to greet you. She is a very curious dog so she tries to eat everything. Once she took my sister's shoe and put it in her pile of stuff, and in the morning my sister could not find her shoe. She also knocks over the garbage cans and spreads it around the house. She is very cute and funny.

THE RAINBOW M. One day as I was thinking n my lab, I thought about colors.

I wanted to make an invention with many colors. Then I said a rainbow has colors so I'll make a...a...a rainbow maker! But how will I get the colors to make a rainbow.

I can use the dye from the shell of some ... skittles!

It took me two weeks to make it, but it was worth it. I hooked up a tube for each color with a little water so it would drain out the colors. Next I put a bottle of glitter into each one so it would gleam out. Then it shot the colors out the end, and the sun reflected on them. It was so beautiful so I made many copies and sold them for $50,000 each and became very rich.

A seven year old girl named Rapunzel was captured by an evil witch in Rome. Witnesses saw the witch grab the little girl last week and speed away on a broomstick.

A young prince declared, "I am going to look for her!" Many peopl thought he was unreasonably daring.

Forty-five minutes after the kidnapping, witnesses saw the young prince ride to the witch's castle and call out, "Rapunzel, let down your hair!"

Then Rapunzel let down her hair and the prince climbed up her hair.

After fifteen minutes the prince fell out of'the tower.

Some reporters think the witch was with Rapunzel and scratched the prince's eyes because he was blind.

Rapunzel fell down too, but she wasn't blind. She cried, and her tears fell on his eyes and he could see again. So he offered to let Rapunzel live with him. She accepted his offer and will marry him next we$k.

When I was four, my brother and I needed a housekeeper. We found one who is now one of the sweetest people I know. She is tall and has black hair, brown eyes, and a big smile.

Claudette is so sweet, kind, caring, loving, thoughtful, and humorous.

If I ask her something, she will do it. She will help me clean my room when it's messy and play with me when I'm bored. , .

Once I had to go to the 1 ibrary at about 5:30 while she was making dinner. I asked her if she would take me and she said yes. We went to three libraries and didn't find what I was looking for. She came back not at all mad.

We have had a lot of housekeepers before Claudette, but she's the best.

THE CASE OF THE MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCES One dark, stormy night, about a week ago, a school bus disappeared without a trace. People said that they could hear the screams of the children in the bus. Yet no one knows what happened. The next morning the police found no skid marks at all.

Now, a week later, seven more kids disappeared without a trace in the same place. So now it’s up to me, Detective S. Jones, to solve these two cases.

Yesterday I just started at the scene of the crimes.

The bears' house on Bridge Street was robbed early today. A bowl of soup, a chair, and a bed were stolen. The police suspect that Goldie Locks, a high school student, was the thief.

She was standing outside at the scene of the crime.

Police heard her say, "I didn't do it, and the soup was cold."

Lt. Gooble has looked the house over and found flour all over the kitchen, chairs broken and soup spilled.

Upstairs the beds were dirty with the sheets torn. "The damage could cost up to $1,000.00," he reported.

"What will happen to our nice, calm neighborhood now?" complained Mrs. Bear.

Later this afternoon Goldie was taken to court and she may be sentenced to six months in prison. / \

HISSER My bird's name is Hisser. She got her name because whenever someone walked by, she would hiss.

Hisser is a cockatoo. A cockatoo is a kind of bird that has a feather on top of its head that goes back and sticks out. The feather on the top of the bird's head is called a crest.

Hisser is gray with a little white and yellow. Hisser is about two years old.

My brother got her for his birthday.

Hisser is a very good and loud bird.

NOT A THANKSGIVING Hi, my name is George Turkey. I live on a fa rm wi th Sa11y Sheep, Halley Horse and Paddadaly Pig. I like it here very much. One of the things I admire is how much they've been feeding me and how little they've been feeding the others. "Hey you, George," said Halley, "did you know you're going to be turned into dead meat in a few weeks?" "Oh, thanks for telling me Halley.

I really wanted to know," I said sarcastically. "So you don't want me to help you, George?"

"Yes, yes, yes, I do!" I exclaimed.

"Well , start thinking of escaping ideas."

So he did. Halley had a couple of ideas but none was good enough. One day went by, then another, and another. Finally, he had a terrific idea. His idea was to dress me in people's clothes and pretend I was a farmer working there.

Then the day came.

It was Thanksgiving.

I got my clothes and crept behind a tree. Then I walked into the farmer's house and said what we had been practicing for weeks: "What's my job this year?"

The head farmer said, "You cook the turkey."

Now what was George going to do?

He was the turkey! What he did was he put himself in the pan and, they took the top off the pan, he screamed and ran off. This all happened in the middle of a prayer. Everybody was so mad that they forgot about Thanksgiving, and that's how George got away with his trick.

A WEIRD ST. PATRICK'S DAY On March.17, 1986, at 7:00, my alarm clock went off. Dangl I was really mad since it was a Saturday.

I got out of bed and got some juice. Then I went into the T.V. room to watch some cartoons. As soon as I switched on the television set, a leprechaun jumped out of the screenl "Thank youl" he cried.

I was so surprised I couldn't say anything. When I finally found my voice, I said, "Who are you, and thanks for what?"

"I'm Laddie Leprechaun, and I thanked you for letting me out of the television set!"

"Letting you out of the T.V.I" I yelled.

"I only turned It onl"

He said, "Well, you let me out too. You see, about ten years ago, the Grinch of St. Patrick's Day cast a spell over me. The spell was that I was stuck in a T.V. set until someone turned it on on St. Patrick's Day. Well, folks always had other things to do on St. Patrick's Day besides watching television."

Well, if you know what I mean, I felt a little weird, having this Lala leprechaun, Lulu leprechaun, oh, whatever.-his name was, around my house. He was just a wee bit weird. Oh gosh, I'm even starting to talk like him.

"Look," I said to him, "you better gel out of this house right now or I'm going to boot you outl" "Okay," he said, "I was going to give you my pot of gold if you helped me find my home, but I guess you're not interested."

I shouted, "Hey! Hold it right there!

Run that past me one more timel"

He said, "I said that I'd give you my pot of gold if you'd help me find my home."

"Okayl"

HELP? NOT FROM ME

by Tolly Jones A mule who had been through a great ordeal? which had' left him with a lame leg, was being excluded from a game, as usual. Mule was sitting by a tree watching the sport of Hunters and-Game that all the animals were playing. Hunters-and-Game is like Sharks-and-Minnows to you humans. While playing the game, Lion was so foolish as to have run into a bramble bush, which had injured his leg.

"Mule, Mule," everyone cried, "what should we do?"

Well, Mule was startled because he had never been asked to help anyone before. Therefore he said, "Why should I help?

You've never needed me before."

Mule was regretful for the rest of his life, for no one ever asked him to help out or to be his friend again.

Take a chance or be left out.

THE ANIMALS AND THE HAWK

by Elizabeth Gill Once there was a barnyard of animals living happily and peacefully on a small quiet farm. But one day a hawk came and made the farm his hunting grounds. It was terrible. The hawk was chasing the animals all over the farm, sometimes even kill­ ing a few.

So the animals called a meeting. more.

"This is terrible," they said. "We can't do our work any­ We are all too scared of the hawk."

Then the cat had an idea. They would scare the hawk away from the farm by getting the lion in the woods to kill him. All the animals cheered, for they thought this was a very clever idea.

But then a'wise old hen.said, "But who is going to get the lion to come'out of the woods and kill the hawk?"

by Jessica Black Civil was sitting at his desk in school, thinking about his homework assignment. He had to write about special grandparent because it was Grandparents' Week. He just could not think about grandparents at the moment, so he decided he would write about one when he got home.

After he got home he did not do his homework, but in­ stead, watched television all night. He just thought he would do his homework in the morning on the way to the bus stop or on the bus.

When he was on the bus, all he did was pull little Susie's hair all the way to school. At school he told teacher that he had thought about his homework at home he just didn't know how to word it. His teacher's rep a trip to study hall.

by Liza Crowell One day a small ant was sent out to fetch some food. He had to carry this piece of food all the way up the hill that he lived on. The ant searched all over and finally found a grain of wheat. Now, he had to carry it on his back all the way home.

This was terribly difficult. The grain of wheat was getting heavier and heavier by the minute. Finally, after much terrible pain from carrying the grain of wheat all the way up the hill, the ant reached the top. He was so elated over his achievement that he accidentally kicked the grain of wheat all the way down

THE CAT AND THE MOUSE

by John Schneider A cat was hunting for food around his master's house. Then he saw a mouse in the middle of a room. He chased it and caught it. The mouse said, "If you let me go, I will grant you three wishes."

The cat thought for a minute and let him go. The mouse as soon as he got to his hole said, "Ha^ Ha! I tricked you." Then he dis­ appeared into his hole.

The cat was very upset with himself. A few days later the cat caught the same mouse again, and again he said, "If you let me go, I will grant you three wishes."

■The cat replied, "You tricked me once before but you'll never trick anybody again!" and he popped the mouse in his mouth.

There was once an ant named Sam. Sam was a stamp collector. One day he was carrying a stamp that he had been looking for for a long time. He was on his way to his house across the grate when he dropped the stamp in the sewer. Sam sat down and cried, and cried, and cried until the Ant God came.

Then the Ant God asked, "What's the matter, Sam?" Sam yelled, "My stamp has fallen in the sewer. you get it for me?

He first came out with a gold stamp and asked,"Is this yours?"

Sam answered, "No, it is not."

The Ant God dove in again and came out with a silver stamp, and he asked,"Is this yours?"

Sam answered, "No,it is not."

The Ant God dove in one more time and brought out the original stamp and asked, "Is this yours?"

Sam answered, "Yes, it is my stamp."

The Ant God said, "Since you told the truth, you shall also get the silver and the gold stamp." So Sam went home with his stamps.

The next day another ant tried the same trick but said that the gold stamp was his. Since it was not, the Ant God didn't give the ant any stamp. ^

While he was sleeping, a bird fell to the ground and sat behind Fred and pecked on his head. Then Fred w o k e up, grabbed the bird, and said, "That felt good. I will take you home and have you peck on my head."

So he took the bird home and said, "Now you can peck on my head."

But first the bird said, "Let me get my cousin, so he can peck on your head, too."

The bird, flew away and never came back. very angry with himself.

THE LION AND THE MOUSE

by Daniele Floriani Once in a far-off jungle in the middle of Africa lived a lion. It was about five o'clock at night, and the lion was hungry. On this night it hunted down a buffalo which was its favorite food. For dessert it wanted its favorite food, two mice. But the only problem was that the mice could run fast, turn sharply, and jump into their hole. The lion couldn't catch them. They always ran away. So the lion had to think of a plan. He finally had an idea. All he needed was something to tie his feet up to a tree. He did this so the mice would think he was dead and come near him. Then he would grab the mouse, or mice, if he was lucky. The next evening he caught another buffalo, and then he tied his feet to this massive branch.

Twd mice came out and said, "Look! He's dead." They both went over to him, and another suddenly said, "Don't go near him.

He's not dead. He'll eat you if you go near him. I've seen a lot of lions do that."

And the lion never got down and so he died.

THE LITTLE MOUSE

by Margi Hinman One day a new kitten was born. As the little cat walked through the house, a mouse appeared. This mouse was the same mouse that Tiger (the mother of the little cat) hated. The mouse figured that since the cat was so small, he could bite the cat's tail and get even with Tiger.

As soon as the cat saw the mouse, he ran after him.

After a second, the cat had the mouse in his mouth.

THE ELEPHANT AND THE WASP

As he was trampling over most of the plants on his path, he heard a buzzing in his ear. Then he heard a wasp say, "Stop."

The wasp thought he should by all means be honored by all beasts, so he stung the elephant in his ear, which is a very painful place to be stung.

THE. FOX AND THE GRAPES

'V There once was a young, mean fox who went into an orchard to hunt. He came upon a delicious looking grape vine that had a wire fence around it. The fox tried to squeeze its way through the wires. All of his body got through the wire fence except his stom­ ach because he had eaten too many birds the day before. He finally got out of the wire and went back to his den sadly.

There he sat for three days without eating. On the fourth day he went back to the orchard and tried to squeeze through the fence again.

by David Lamond The snail u/as being chased in New York City by a snail hunter one day. The snail, called Slimy, escaped behind a rock.

That night Slimy wished he could see what it was like to be an escargot with garlic sauce and the whole bit, with some people throwing up at the mere sight of him and other people drooling over him.

He woke up, and he was in the snail hunter's net. He was definitely freaked. He was going to live his wish. Actually he was going to die his wish. Slimy didn't want to die. He thought, "I'm too young to die."

Luckily there was a hole in the net, big enough for him to get out through. From then on, he never wished again.

THE FLY AND THE HORSE

by Gary Johnson One hot summer day in early August a tired old work horse plopped down in a field of tall green grass.

He was getting annoyed because there were so many flies on him, so the horse had to work extra hard trying to swat the flies off with his tail. About five minutes of doing this passed by, when a little ten year old fly alighted on the horse's ear, and started to talk to the work horse, though the horse didn't know it. Finally the fly said, "Goodbye."

The horse barely heard him and said, "Who is that?"

"It's me," said the fly."

The horse said, "I didn't even know you were there so it doesn't really matter if you left or stayed." The fly was bummed because the horse didn't hear him and he thought that he had said some pretty important things.

By Scott Yen There was once a poor but kind old bachelor who lived on a small dirty farm. He never had enough to eat because he had to sell most of the crops he grew to pay off his debts, and he didn't get a lot of money because his crops were very poor.

One day he found a badly injured dove. It was starv­ ing to death. He fed the bird with the little food he had.

The old man died while sleeping. When he work up, he was in a rich palace in the clouds with the dove, and there was a big dish of Peking duck with a slice of blueberry pie for dessert, a plate of vegetables and fruit, and a blazing fire on the hearth.

The dove turned into an angel and it said, "Thank you for helping me." Then she said his reward was heaven and comfort.

A BIRD

by Rebecca Caldwell A bird flew in from the North on its way to the South, into the dense forest, and landed on a branch. A fox came out of a hole and asked, "Won't you come for dinner?"

"Well," sighed the bird.

"I'm so hungry, aren't you2 I have not eaten in weeks," interrupted the fox.

The bird flew a branch closer to the fox and peeked into a hollow tree. Then the bird landed on the soft, wet ground about two rabbit hops away from the fox, still thinking about eating with the fox Finally he answered, "No, I will just eat some seeds here and be on my way." With that he flew away up into the skies.

THE BOY AND THE DOG

by Chris Tembreull A boy, who claimed that he loved his dog, was watching T.V. He heard his dog barking to be let out, but he waited for his parents to do it. The parents, however, were testing the boy's claims of love and waited for him to let the dog out.

At last the boy got up and let the dog go after the bird it had seen. Then the parents called the boy up. The father said, "Son, you have oroved that you really love your dog."

"Of course, Dad," said the boy.

But the father went on. "You proved it by getting yourself away from the set and letting the dog out. You see A c t i o n s sp ea k louder than words.

The old lion walked down a wide, dusty trail which came upon a steep, steep cliff.

The lion felt so sad that he wanted to jump off the cliff so he would never see his sick baby son. He said, "God, I want to die."

Then the lion came to the edge of the cliff. Just as he was about to jump he heard a young tiger calling behind him. "Mr. Lion, Mr. ion. Your son - he's O.K. - he's not sick!"

Sixth Grade Class History Nursery School- Clint, Matt, Megan, Todd, and Martin attended Nursery School at Trinity Parish. Kate, Denice, Gaby, Cary, Mark, and John entered Nursery School when we moved to P.B.S. Clint and Matt had a pillow fight. Matt ducked when Clint threw the pillow at him and the pillow hit a vase, knocked it over, and broke it. Mrs. Dulik said she was going to bite off Clint's nose. Both boys had to sit in the growing-up-chair.

Kindergarten- Adam and Chris were new. Kate had poison oak; everyone stared at her. Chris hit Margi in the head with a huge stick and got in trouble! The sixth graders took us to chapel. We loved playing with blocks.

First Grade- In first grade we had many laughs. Jake and David were new. Robby Page peed in his pants on his birthday. At recess Adam kissed Megan. Johnny drew on the floor and blamed it on Mark.

Second Grade- Stephanie and Kristin were new. All the girls talked baby talk. Jake gave Stephanie seventeen valentines.

Robby threw up in the middle of class so Mr. Brackett had us evacuate the room.

Third Grade- Jessica, Keith, and Alexa came and Marie-Christine left for England in the middle cf the year. Some of the boys got in a big fight with the second grade boys. We spent a scary night at Pigeon Point Lighthouse, because there was a big storm. We hiked out to see the elephant seals. Jessica threw up and Cary fainted in chapel. We performed the play "Free to be You and Me". The boys put a worm in Stephanie’s desk.

Fourth Grade- In fourth grade Paige and Vincent joined our class.

We created missions and relief maps of California. At the end of the year we went to Inverness and stayed in Mrs. Landreth's cabin.

Fifth Grade- Our fifth grade year was fun and interesting; Sarah ate a live ant. The girls played duck, duck, goose. We had to write Colonial reports. After the musical play we had a Colonial Day. We went to Sacramento and visited the capitol and Sutter',s Fort. Mrs. Westmoreland tapped the chalk on the board waiting for us to quiet down.

In a spelling test she pronounced boil like bowl. Todd put his hand through the library window.

Sixth Grade- We went to Yosemite for a week with the fifth graders. At recess most of the girls enjoyed aerobic dancing.

We learned all the nations of the world and the presidents!

We performed the play A Wrinkle in Time. We went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and on a Marine Biology boat trip on San Francisco Bay. Stephanie went steady with a fifth grader!

David's a sophomore at U 0 P, He lives in Stockton; he doesn't see much of me.

He called Mom and me excited to tell, He'd just pledged a "frat" house - AKL. I'm proud of my brother, he's coming home soon, For Easter vacation, this Friday at noon.

TWO DUMB PIGS AND THEIR SMARTER LITTLE

--------------------------- BROTHER

by Uincent Chan Once upon a time three pigs who had just graduated from college went out in­ to the world to start their lives. The oldest pig, named Harry, decided to rent a home instead of buying one. The Wolf owned the house Harry lived in. The Wolf was getting hungry so he approached Harry's house and said, "Little pig, little pig, let me in."

Harry replied, "No way, because you might be a salesman."

The Wolf was furious and he yelled, "I'll huff and I'll puff, and I'll raise your rent."

Harry did not want his rent to be raised, so he let the Wolf in. Harry was consumed.

His younger brother, Larry, lived in a condominium which he owned, although he had borrowed the money from the bank.

The Wolf owned the bank which had loaned Larry the money to buy the condominium.

The Wolf got hungry again, so he said, "Little pig,little pig,let me in."

Larry replied, "No way, because you might be the Night Stalker."

The Wolf was furious and said, "I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll repossess your condominium."

Larry liked his condominium so he let the Wolf in, and Larry was devoured.

The youngest pig, Perry, lived in a log cabin that was all his own, and the Wolf couldn't do anything to him.

The Wolf said, "Little pig, little pig, let me in," ,and Perry replied, No way, because y.ou might be from the IRS." The Wolf knew he couldn't make Perry come out, so he made a citizen's arrest because Perry wouldn't let him in his house. Perry sued the Wolf for false arrest. The Wolf could not pay Perry so Perry possessed the Wolf's house. He also took over all the other houses the Wolf owned, including his two brothers' houses. The Wolf also lost his job at the bank.

Perry lived luxuriously for the rest of his life in the same log cabin.

Meanwhile, the Wolf reverted to a life of crime and spent most of his time in the New York sewer system.

THE THREE LITTLE WOLVES

by Keith Wilbur Once upon a time three very naughty little wolves named Lewis, Bobby, and Mickey were thrown out of their house.

They were kicked out because they were a bother to their parents who couldn't handle them.

The youngest wolf, Mickey, was very cute but careless. He went in a for­ est and bought some mud for only ten dollars. With the mud he bought, he built a mud house. His older brother, Bobby, who was neat, but a little care­ less, went to the same forest and spent twenty dollars to buy some wood. Next to Mickey's house, Bobby built a little wood house. Lewis, the oldest wolf brother, handsome and smart, spent a hundred dollars to build a two-story house with the very strong material of brick. He built his house in the forest next to his brothers' houses.

One day a big, bad boar came stroll­ ing along, looking for a delicious meal.

All of a sudden, he came across the three little wolves. First he came upon the youngest wolf, Mickey, and said, "Little wolf, let me in."

Mickey exclaimed, "Are you kidding?

No way."

The big bad boar yelled, "Let me in or I'll smash and I'll clash your house down."

Mickey got scared and said, "You'll never be able to destroy my house."

But Mickey was wrong, and the big bad boar smashed the mud house, and he clashed the mud house, until the house fell. Mickey was terrified and ran to the wood house belonging to his brother, Bobby.

Bobby yelled, "Do you really think I'm that dumb?"

The big, boar was furious, and he clashed and he smashed the wood house down. The scared wolves ran to their oldest brother's house.

When the big bad boar finally reached the brick house, he said angrily, "You let me in or I'll clash and I'll smash your house down!"

Smart old Lewis said calmly, "Oh, yeah? Prove it."

Mickey and Bobby yelled at Lewis, "Are you crazy? He'll kill us!"

The big bad boar chuckled and said, "That's right."

Jo the big bad boar smashed and he clashed the brick house, but it didn't budge. The big bad boar got frustrated and went away with bent tusks, and the three little wolves lived happily ever after.

I whispered quiety. "But you've taken almost all my food. I have only a bag of moldy bread left."

"I don't care! way," Jack groaned.

Give it to me any­

I rushed silently into the kitchen where the bread was. While I was getting it my magic hen, who laid golden eggs, squawked. I could hear Jack running wildly into the kitchen where I was. He snatched my hen!

"Please, come back, " I said timidly.

I could hear him laughing as he climbed back up the beanstalk.

I didn't know what to do! I decided to cut the beanstalk while Jack was climbing up. He fell and fell and fell until he finally hit the ground.

"Oh, no," I said. kill him!t"

"I didn't mean to

I could hear voices from the village on top. They were celebrating! Jack's mother peeked down and said, "Come on up, you jolly green giant! Jack was so mean to everyone up here."

I ran as quickly as I could and had a really fun time. As we were dancing and playing, we all chanted this song: "Yah! Yah! Jack is dead! Jack is dead for good."

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK

"Ohhh, ahhh, ah ha, " I said as I looked through my crystal ball while sit­ ting in my castle underneath the bean­ stalk.

I was staring at the mean, nosy little brat, Jack. He lived up in the clouds like every other person who lived in Greensville except for one person, me, the giant.

THE THREE HOGS

There once were three hogs.

Sanny, Fanny and Anny were their names. The hogs "Oh, no," I shrieked. "The tiny, were fat, pink, and ugly. They each built skinny, angry-looking Jack is coming down a house. Sanny made a marshmallow house. into my castle."

Fanny constructed a teepee out of grass.

Anny built a house out of bricks.

"Bang!! I heard the doorbell ring.

I tiptoed to the door. There was Jack standing impatiently at the door. He stormed in, furiously.

"You fat, uy^gly, huge giant," he growled at me. "I want more food."

Along came big Hunter John. John had a gun, no hair, and no teeth. He wore a dress. He went to Anny's brick house and said, "Come out." Anny said, "Not by the hair of my nose." Hunter (C o n t i n u e d )

John ate the bricks.

Anny ran to Fanny's house; they watched TV. Hunter John came along and yelled, "I u/ant to watch TV, too." The hogs said, "No." John burned the house down.

John chased the hogs to Sanny's house. Now they were crying and they felt badly. Sanny was young and dumb to have made a house out of candy.

The hogs were in the marshmallow kingdom eating alfalfa. Along came Hunter John. He said, "I will eat all of you."

But both of the pigs yelled foolisly, "Huff away!" So I huffed and puffed and blew the mansion down. This time it was a little harder, though, but you know us wolves, we can blow down anything.

The pigs flew over to the third brother's house. They went inside and I think they thought they were safe.

I roared to all the pigs, "I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your cardboard box down!" So I took a big breath and blew the hardest I could.

The box flew away, and there were the three pigs. I really don't know how they all managed to fit in that wee space, but there they were.

The hogs said, "He will eat us and we will die." Hunter took one bite of the door and became violently sick.John hated marshmallows.

The third pig said, "Wait a minute.

This isn't how it happened in the real story!"

Hunter John ran home. The hogs were saved. Now they are watching TV.

Well, that night I had a delicious meal of three roasted, big fat pigs.

THE THREE LITTLE PIGS

by Jessica Berkeley Once upon a time I had an interest­ ing experience with three little pigs.

One little pig lived in a shack, the second in a mansion, and the other lived in a cardboard box. The three little pigs thought they had built wolf-proof houses, huh! For me, the kind old wolf, nothing is wolf-proof!

So I walked over to the shack and said to the first little pig, "Come on out and play, or I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down!.

But the stupi’ d little pig said, "Huff away!"

So I started huffing and I blew the shack down, and the pig went flying into the air. "Ha!" I yelled. He flew to his brother's doorstep and he went inside with his brother. Now those pigs felt safe.

I said again, "Come on out and play, or I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your mansion down!"

THE UGLY SWAN

by Kristin Braniff Once upon a time, far away in the country, lived a beautiful swan. She was expecting her first baby swans, and she couldn't be patient.

Gracefully she sat on her eggs while awaiting their hatching. She noticed that one of the eggs was clearly smaller than the others.

"Well, how's it going? asked an old swan who was passing by.

"Dear, dear," she said. "I'm worried about one of the eggs. It is so much smaller than my other eggs."

Oh, don't worry! It's probably just the runt," he said. That made her feel a little better.

At last one egg after the other began to crack. "Peep, peep!" the baby swans said. They were all so very in­ terested in the big, beautiful world.

"Oh, my! This small egg is taking such a long time!" the mother swan said to herself. "I shall leave it to hatch and take my other young 'uns to swim in the nearby pond." Just before she left, the small egg cracked open. "Cheep, cheep!" sang the little swan and wad­ dled around.

What a strange-looking swan! It doesn't look a bit like the others, she thought. What am I to do with it?

The next day the mother swan took her babies to visit the other swans, hens, and turkeys. "My goodness! He's so little and so uncoordinated," they taased. "The others are truly adorable, though."

The poor ugly swan was getting shoved and pecked all over. He didn't know where to turn, and he couldn't stand being the laughingstock of the crowd.

Soon after they had left the older animals, the ugly little swan ran away.

He felt so left out, and he knew that even his mother didn't love him. After a while he came to a fence that many birds were sitting on. They took one look at him and laughed. Immediately after that, they flew high into the sky.

"That's because I'm so ugly," cried the swan and closed his eyes. He managed to get over the fence, and eventually he came to a marsh where wild animals lived.

He lay there all night, terribly tired and without a hope.

Late the next day the ugly swan woke up and continued his endless journey.

Over many fields and meadows he scut­ tled until he came to a broken-downlittle farm cottage'. The wind was blow­ ing extremely hard, and all the swan wanted to do was to get into that cozy looking little farm cottage. Then he noticed a hinge on the door was broken off. Immediately he slipped through and soon fell asleep.

In the morning an old woman, her cat, and her hen noticed him. "My, what a find! I shall be able to have swan's

eggs along with hen's eggs," exclaimed the woman.

"Can you lay eggs?" asked the hen.

"Mo." Can you arch your back or purr?" asked the cat.

"No." "Well, then, you're not wanted here or anywhere," they both said in unison.

The swan decided to leave, but the old woman wouldn't hear of it. She made him stay there so that he would lay eggs for her. Little did she know that he couldn't lay eggs. The mean woman put the little swan into a cage and never let him out. The poor, sad, little swan live unhappily ever after.

SLEEPING UGLY

by Paige Eriedlander Once a long, long time ago, King Edward and Queen Victoria were the law­ ful and merciful rulers of England.

They had longed for a child since they were married almost twenty-five years ago. It was the day before their anni­ versary when a little princess was brought into this world. The whole castle felt exultant, and Edward and Victoria arranged to have a party.

They invited everyone, including all the fairies of the land, to the party.

The party turned out to be a trag­ edy. The good fairies could see in the baby's gray eyes malice. They fig­ ured that when the princess grew to be a young lady, she would be cruel and wicked, unlike her caring parents.

They realized it would be a good idea to get rid of her on her sixteenth birth­ day. Instead of giving her gifts, the fairies exclaimed that while blowing out sixteen candles, her hair would catch on fire and she would die.

by Alexa Savelle Marta was a shy little girl, and new to her school. She was only in the third grade.

One day while she and her friends were playing handball against the class­ room wall, they stopped the game for an argument about the rules. Marta was holding the ball when she saw Mike run­ ning toward them.

I wonder what would happen, thought Marta, if I threw the ball at Mike.

"What if it hits him?" her consci­ ence answered.

"Oh, I have bad aim," she thought, "but I'll have to think fast. He's almost here."

"Don't do it. You might hit him," said her conscience.

"I'll just throw it," she thought.

"It won't hit him anyway, so it doesn't matter."

She threw the ball as hard as she could. Bonk! It hit Mike right in the

TOO BAD

by Martin Henriksen It was Easter Day of 1985. Everything was going perfectly until the egg hunt.

Right before this, Brian and I had been sitting in the Menlo Country Clubhouse for three hours listening to a dull speech We were so bored. We had thought it was going to be the best day all spring, and, in a way, it was.

Long before we were supposed to, we started sprinting up the path toward all the Easter eggs in the bushes and in the grass. As we went along, we found many real eggs, the ones we wanted the most.

We jumped over a wall and hid behind it for awhile.

We heard all the kids coming up for the eggs. We jumped up and over the wall looking for the man dressed in a bunny outfit. We saw him in front of a large pack of kids. We threw every single egg we had with every ounce of strength we (C o n t i n u e d )

had. The best eggs, the real ones, all tagged the bunny. The bunny turned yellow on his clothes and red in his face. The bunny fainted and tumbled all over the kids, turning them all yellow. I don't know how mad the parents were, but I'm sure they got pretty mad.

We ran down the hill and accidently bumped into the manager of the club. We knocked him over and kept on running.

He never really found out who we were, but I'm sure he had an idea, and I'm sure if we had been caught, we would not be able to go to Menlo Country Club anymore, even for swimming.

IDIOTS, REAL IDIOTS

by Gaby Hess One Halloween night we invited our friends, the Phillipses, to go trick-ortreating with us. It was a very interest­ ing and exciting night.

You see, three boys, who unfortun­ ately knew my sister, started "bugging" us at about eight-thirty. I can't de­ scribe them too well because I didn't really know them, nor did I see them; it was too dark. All I know is that one of them had blondish hair, and the other two had brown hair, I think. They were all rather tall. Later on I found out their names: John, Jack,and Michael, the "show-offs" of my sister's sixth grade class.

We were trick-or-treating on Wyndham Drive, and these boys dressed as army men jumped out from somewhere. The first thiny I saw was white, obviously shaving cream. I should know. I looked like a half-finished snowman at the end of the night! Actually, I shouldn't complain.

My sister looked as if her costume was an egg, with whipped cream on top! Our friends got a couple of eggs here and there, but not nearly as many as my sister or I. And on top of it all, those guys had the nerve to think it was funny! They all

just stood there laughing their heads off! I could have killed them for what they did!

About 11:30 they finally stopped "bugging" us, leaving a real mess be­ hind. Our friends' car, a Mercedes, had eggs and shaving cream all over it, and unprintable words were writton on the driveway. The house had at least fifty eggs on the front and about three or four cans worth of shaving cream. ^llil On top of all this, we later niHnd out that one of the boys' fathers had been standing right down the road and did nothing to stop them.

The boys didn't get away with it.

Their parents made them apologize, all except one. One of them called, and the other came to our house. The boy who didn't apologize was the one whose father had been down the street! Can you be­ lieve that?

I don't think those boys will ever egg somebody's house again, at least not on our street.

EGG HEAD

by David Wood Six of us had it all planned out.

We would meet at the park at about 7:30 p.m. The only part I had was to smuggle out of the house a dozen rotten eggs I had previously stored in my bottom draw­ er, along with all my underwear. My mother never looks there.

I was a punk this Halloween, so I put my eggs under my long trenchcoat. I approached the park at about 7:33 and the guys were waiting for me. I gave them two eggs and we were off.

We "trick or treated" for about two hours, and then we got out the eggs. Be­ fore I knew it, most of my friends had already thrown theirs. We were like madmen going beserk, running around and throwing eggs at almost anything we saw.

Everyone's eggs were gone except mine. "Throw them," coaxed Jack. "If you don't, give them to me."

"Here, you can have one. the other."

I want

I finally found a house that was just right. I flung the egg toward the house. It sailed through the air toward the door, but instead of being hit, the door opened, and out stepped a man. My egg tagged him right in the forehead.

The man was on my tail in a second. He caught up to me and gasped, "Where do you liv/e?"

I told him, and he took me to my house and told my parents the whole story.

I wondered about my friends. Or should I say ex-friends? I guess they ditched me.

My parents gave me a two-hour lec­ ture, and I was grounded for two months.

As for the man, I guess he went home and washed his face.

First we sneaked from behind and hit him with a plunger in the back of the head. Then we yelled, "Ha, ha, toilet head." But before that he had turned the tape recorder on.

Later it got worse. Since Jim didn't react with an explosion of fury as he usually did, we decided to go tag Mr. Rootendumb's cat with rocks.

"Maybe we shouldn't do this, Todd, Mark said shakily.

"Oh, it'll be all right. I've done it before. He'll never catch us," I snapped.

"What a wimp," I whispered to myself.

We sneaked out of the house with a bag of rocks and went over to waste Mr. Rootendumb's cat. You would think we couldn't do anything worse, but right then we decided to go egg the old church around the corner so we wouldn't have to go to Sunday School. The worst thing of all was my brother got all of this on tape.

That night when my rotten brother played the tape for Dad, I really got it. He grounded me for the rest of the month. He made me get Mr. Rootendumb LET'S EGG THE CHURCH another cat because the old one had run

They were mean to most people, but what surprised me is they liked me a lot.

After it was all over, I told my­ self, "Who needs those guys as my friends?

They'll just get me into more trouble.

After all, I think it is sort of cool to be a nerd!"

I was kind of a goody-goody. I studied all the time and had no friends.

I would never do anything that was the slightest bit bad. I didn't drink or smoke like most of the kids in town.

TROUBLE

It was the day of the school picnic and I thought it would be a good chance to do something bad with the "guys."

The picnic was getting old and I thought it would be a good time to get away. I asked the guys if they wanted to go to The Record factory or somewhere around there, and they said sure.

"Do you want to buy any Girl Scout Cookies?"

"No way!"

Slam.

That was the story of my life. I was a Girl Scout. I had to make $200 by April 2nd. That was four weeks away. I hadn't sold any cookies since we started.

But then something happened.

We got on our skateboards and rode off. I was having a great time. We didn't find anything to do at The Record factory so we disappointedly skated off.

Then, pop, I had an idea. We could secretly take the plastic names off cars.

I hastily told my friends about it. They liked it so much they practically killed me. I asked Steve if he would do it first and he said, "Are you kidding? Ask Joe."

One glorious March day, with not a cloud in the sky, I was strolling down Lombard Street near the main road. I was looking for a nice house whose occupant might buy some cookies when suddenly some eight punks caught sight of me. They had black leather boots, chains around their necks and waists and Mohawks. One of them had a dead rat which he had probably killed with his sharp teeth.

Grotesque!

I took his advice and asked Joe, but he exclaimed, "You have got to be jok­ ing! I think you should do it, Cary."

Suddenly they started yelling, "Nerd, nerd, nerd!"

I wasn't mad. After all, I was a nerd.

Pointy glasses, braces, fifties clothes my mother made me wear them. I had only one friend - Mertha.

I agreed to the idea, but I didn't really want to. I thought that if I did­ n't do it they wouldn't like me. I slowly tiptoed up to this bright new red Anyway the punks came up to me. One Siera. The door opened and a lady stepped out. Her hair u/as in a bun and she had an apron on that read, "Hyatt Regency, New York." Her slippers, as big as they were, hung on as tightly as a child holding candy. She saw me and screamed her lungs out. A stingy looking neigh­ bor with spectacles and a cane saw me and the woman who was screaming, so he called the police.

Soon I was surrounded by cops.

There were about five or six of them.

One had to be the sheriff. He was fat and had two badges and dirty jeans no uniform. The others were in uni­ form. They brought me to the station by car. It was a small station where some women were doing paper work. Also there was a door off to the left that read, "Cells."

In one office I told the police the entire story. They let me go, and I guit the Girl Scouts. But I still went door to door; I became an Avon Lady.

Alexa was, at the moment, going through my desk and finding a few things of interest. She sang, "Fish heads,fish heads, roly, poly fish heads, eat them up, Yum!" as she fingered my stuff. By destroying all order left in my drawers, the desk had yielded a reward of a broken metal compass with no pencil, a pair of left-handed scissors, and a six-volt battery.

"I am Albert Einstein," she announced, her brown eyes dancing with mischief.

After shaking her curly black hair and pulling a wool cap, she announced, "I will recreate your science experiment."

After fiddling with the compass, scis­ sors, and battery for a few seconds, she sat down and admired her finished product.

The battery was decidedly weird. It had two curlicues, positive and negative, and was a Duracel. Alexa had stuck the compass and the scissors in the curlicues and had them touching. Alexa sprawled out on the floor, satisfied, commanded me, "See Sarah's experiment #two, ta-da!"

"I'm starving. I don't know about you, but I am going downstairs," I announced.

"DON’T PLAY WITH BATTERIES..."

by Sarah Mohr “ Alexa and I had completely exhaus­ ted all possibilities for "sensible games" and were, at the moment, playing a form of bowling in my room. This game was played by setting up five or six Hansen's cans, and sitting down behind a line with three tennis balls. We then hurled the balls one by one at the cans to hopefully knock them over. Alexa was better than I; she could make a lot more noise when she threw her balls, an­ other objective of^ the game. Although the cans were presumably empty, some­ times Hansens dripped out of them. It was my turn and I was on my second ball, though at the moment re-setting the cans.

Alexa was dancing around the room hyper­ actively.

If my parents had been home, they would have heard us because of the noise.

But instead, my grandmother was home and since she was a bit deaf she didn't heer a thing.

After finishing dinner and watching "The Misfits of Science" we returned to my room. Alexa was whistling "My Buddy, My Buddy and me!" The first thing I noticed when I walked into my room was a revolting smell; like something burn­ ing* Sniff, sniff. Alexa and I crept into my room, cautiously, very cautiouly.

"Do you smell something," I questioned Alexa nervously. "Like burning rub­ ber?" Suddenly we both saw Alexa's "sci­ ence experiment". Her eyes grew wide with excitement. "Oh, my God," I ex­ claimed. I ran over to my desk and looked at the mess.

The battery had leaked chemicals all over the corner of my desk. After remov­ ing the compass and scissors we were able to see the damage more clearly.

Alexa started laughing. She has a funny way of laughing with her head thrown back and not making any noise.

"You've got to come upstairs, right NOW!!" My Grandmother hurriedly followed me with three bags, one inside the other, and fifty-million paper towels. After tossing the battery in the bags, we gazed at the hole. That's right - a hole in my desk. It's still there.

CHRISTINA

"I'm going to a dance," Christina answered, so softly her mom could barely hear.

"A dance?

I won't permit it."

"Please, Mom, this dance is the one that everyone goes to."

"Oh, okay, but don't come back after midnight."

Christina went outside and waited for her friends. They came to pick her up and take her away from her old frame house , hg^mom and dad, and her twelveyear old sister who was crippled with polio.

Christina and her friends drove to the graduation dance at the school.

They arrived at the dance at 7:00 and she became quite bored by 10:00 because no one had asked her to dance. She decided to walk home. When she^ot home, she told her mom she was,home and went up­ stairs to sleep.

Thursday night her parents were going on a trip for the rest of the week, and Christina wanted to go to a party. How­ ever she was supposed to stay home with Julie, her sister. That night was Thursday night. She told her little sister not to play with knives and dan­ gerous things. Right before tier friends came, she quickly maae dinner for Julie.

She heard honking from a car and went outside to get in it. On the ride to her friend's house she listened to the latest gossip.

When she got to her friend's house she immediately went over the list of dangerous things in her mind...matches!

She thought again, and remembered Julie had been taught not to play with matches many times, so she didn't worry.

Christina went to the TV where some friends were watching a movie. They watched for a while when suddenly a news report came on.

The speaker reported in a toneless voice? "A fire has just run through a wooden house, burning everything in­ side. A girl about twelve years old was found in critical shape. She was in a wheelchair, apparently crippled." Chris­ tina heard this and quickly ran the mile to her home.

By the time she got to her house, she was exhausted. Christina went to the ambulance driver and asked, "How's Julie?"

"You mean the little girl?" the driver remarked. "She's dead," he answered cruelly, signaling for every­ one to go back to the hospital.

Christina realized she had let her sister die because she wanted to go with her friends. She never forgave herself for what she had done.

It consisted of ten bedrooms, five bathrooms, two family rooms, two dining rooms, and one kitchen. The day they moved in, Billy, the only son, went exploring. Every room was unlocked ex­ cept for one. Billy asked his dad about it and he said never to go in.

Billy heard his dad telling his mom that the only reason he oidn't want Billy to g,o in there was because he didn't want him to know about Grandpa. Billy didn't pay much attention and soon he forgot about it. He avoided that room for about three weeks. One day, when his parents were gone, he decided to go look in his dad's desk because he usually kept some neat stuff in it. In the first few draw­ ers there wasn't much: some B-Bs, an old camera, and some postcards. In the last, and bottom drawer, there was an old key with a skull and crossbones on it.

"Never go in that room," he re­ membered his dad had said a few weeks before. He walked upstairs to the locked door. He put the key in and turned it.

SCCREEAK went the door as he slowly pushed it open. The room was empty ex­ cept for an old coffin covered with cob­ webs. The coffin was all wood except for a brass plate with some words engraved on it. Billy walked over and knelt down to read it. He wiped off the dust. The brass place read "ALFRED J TURNOR - 18781934. The coffin suddenly opened and an old, mangled hand reached out and grabbed him by the neck. It dragged him into the coffin and then closed. Screams and hid­ eous sounds were coming from inside the coffin. In a minute they ceased.

THE NIGHT OF THE DRIFTER

by Matthew Germino Friday night at 11:37 exactly, a poor man was walking in a fatigued man­ ner down a gloomy alley. He came to a complete halt.

"Holy cow!" he screamed.

In front of him was an empty, beau­ tiful red 1980 Porsche. His eyes sparkled in the moonlight while he was in his daze.

As he was looking at the car he said, "I need that car, and now." He walked slowly to open the door. "Thank goodness, the door is open. Let me see, you put this wire right.... there."

The car started. Uroooom vroooom.

Sirens broke the dead silence. He looked back and the red and blue lights flashed in the sky. The chase was on.

The police car followed the man, nicknamed The Drifter, until he crashed into a telephone pole.

"You again? Get out and put your hands on the car," exclaimed the officer.

The man was so scared he grabbed for his knife and jabbed it into the police­ man's blue shirt instantly killing him.

The dead officer fell in a puddle of dirty water.

The Drifter sat there in shock from what he had done. He heard more police coming in as back-ups. He wanted to run, and fast, but he couldn't move an inch.

"Billy, where are you?" he said again. While he stood frozen stiff, the police Billy's father started up to his room. On cars crawled in closer like stray cats. the way he noticed that the door he had "Hey, Sam, Joe looks hurt!" one cop forbidden Billy to go in was slightly cried, ajar. He walked in ano found blood all over the coffin, and Billy's bloody hand “You're right, he does," another an­ was sticking out. ’ swered. "OK, mister, drop the knife and get out slowly with your hands up!" one policeman said sternly.

Later that day Billy's parents came home.

"Billy," said his father.

As he got out, there were many faces looking at him. Just then he felt like rubber,got dizzy and collapsed.

When he woke, he was in a small, dark cell here in the county jail. He is to be executed tonight. But now I have to stop; it's my turn....

THE LAST SURVIVORS

by John Ziegler The year was 2009; the day the 14th of Hay. I was an astronaut along with seven others to be the first people to live on the moon for over a month. We had already taken off and landed on the moon. As we were unloading the cargo, we saw the most horrible thing anyone could imagine.

We saw missiles scutter across the earth like thin streaks of pencil lines.

Then they disappeared and a puffball of smoke shot up like a drop of water hit­ ting a puddle. What was going to happen to us? Would there be any sur­ vivors when we got back? Would there be too much radiation there for us to survive? All of these questions ouldn't be answered. We would have to find out for ourselves.

Two weeks went by with almost no conversation. The words that were spo­ ken were just murmurs that escaped someone's mouth by accident. Before we had seen the catastrophe, the moon looked wounderful and inviting, but now it was just an empty dead, barren jail.

The day finally arrived when we ran out of food, water, and oxygen. It was time to go back. We were all scared and wondered what we would find. During the whole flight not a word was uttered.

When we landed not one of us dared to open the door. Finally, in a state of panic, I ran up and threw open the door.

We all held our breaths for as long as we could. When we ran out of oxygen we gasped for air. A cool breeze was blowing that played with my hair. In a single file line, we all trudged out­ side. I just couldn't hold back. I burst into tears, and soon everyone was crying.

The next day we all broke out with intolerable rashes. Mike's was so bad that he couldn't move. A few hours later he died.

Now my rash is getting worse and it feels like my insides are being eaten away. This must be my death hour. Who­ ever finds this letter will know my

world's past.

The most important thing in human life is the Bible. It is a book which I have salvaged from my space shuttle.

You can learn much of my world's past from it. I have hidden it in a cave.

This cave is special because it is.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS"

"Ha, ha, you're a jerk. You're a nerd face!"

That's my little brother. "Shut up, Zachary. It's 6:00 in the morning!"

"That's it, Zachery," I said. "Pll give you three seconds to shut up and let me sleep. One. Two. Three. You're dead, little brother."

I slowly got out of bed, got on some play clothes, made my bed, and was about to brush my teeth, when I heard my bro­ ther again. "I beat you. Face!"

That's it, I thought. One more time and I'll kill him but for some odd reason my conscience made me forget my brother.

I brushed my teeth and found my brother watching V .

"Let me see the TV/ controls."

"No." "Zachary, I hate The Smurfs. Why can't we watch something else?

"No, I like The Smurfs."

In the end we were still watching The Smurfs.

I went into the kitchen at 8:00. I had a good breakfast and then went outside.

I was going to scare my brother with my gun. Wait a minute, my gun is mutilated.

With that I said, "Merry Christmas," and took the back of his collar and threw him down to the ground. He started bawl­ ing his head off and then, only then, did I realize I had done the wrong thing.

When we got inside my dad said he had a mild concussion and my mom was crying and telling me all the wrong things I did.

My conscience just laughed and said, "I told you." j k

They were fighting about whether there was such a thing as Santa Claus. This Christmas was not going to be a happy one for the Joneses.

We always go to bed at 9:30!" Arthur explained.

"Yah!" "Well, it's Christmas time, and you want to have a good day tomorrow, so go to sleep now. Otherwise Santa Claus won't bring you any presents."

"See, there's such a thing as Santa Claus! Come on, Harris, let's go to bed!"

"Line!" Harris shouted.

Meanwhile, before the boys went to sleep, they made up some plans....

"You don't have that much,ctieapskate."

"Line with me! But I bet you I, myself, will win five bucks!" bellowed "Well, well, I'll put it in my will Harris. before I die!"

"I'm older than you are, and I may die before you!" bet?

"Well, how about five dollars for a Deal?"

"Deal. Let's shake on it.- Ouch!

You got me again. How many times have I told you not to zap anymore?"

As you can see, this was not exactly brotherly love. This story is about two boys - a twelve year old named Arthur,

At 1:00 a.m. Harris heard a noise, explored the living room, and found a man in a red suit scattering presents under the Christmas tree. Harris did exactly what Arthur had told him to do.

He yelled, "Hey!". The man turned around. Harris ran up to him and yanked on his beard. It didn't come off. Harris, for his age, said a very bad word, which I'm not going to say, and started jamming toward his room. The tremendous noise woke up his mom and dad. They stomped out like grotesque monsters.

Their mom and dad asked Harris, in the morning, the whole story. And Harris told on his brother about what his bro­ ther had told him to do, while Arthur was watching. The parents didn't believe him.

As for Harris, he got none of his presents, and Arthur received all of his plus five bucks from his '"faced" brother.

"I have the best idea. During art I'll draw my planet with the rip on the earth beginning to form. Then I'll draw the earth ripping!" I thought to myself.

So that's what I did. When I handed it in to Mrs. Little, I had to explin it to her.

"Hmmmm, interesting! mumbled Mrs. Little.

"Don't you understand ?" I shouted.

"Yes, but it's im..." All of a sudden the earthquake drill went off.

"Outside, kids!" Mrs. Little was still holding my picture when we went out­ side .

"It's happening!" I thought to my­ self. "At least I won't get hurt. I'll just appear back on my planet."

TOBY AND THE RIP IN THE WORLD

Paige whispered to Sarah.

"I don't know," thought Sarah. "But I can look it up."

"Chris, do you believe me?" asked Toby.

"No way!" boomed Chris.

"Chris!" scolded Mrs. Docter.'

"Toby was talking to me!" Chris shouted back.

"Toby, I think you'll have to go see Miss Root. Come on, follow me," said Mrs. D. "Oh, goodie!" I thought to myself.

"Maybe she 'll believe me."

I visited Miss Root, but of course she didn't believe a word I said.

Everyone then noticed that it wasn't a drill. Mrs. Little looked up at the sky and then at my picture. "What a coincidence!" she screamed.
