One day some very small M< toward their planet. It was a shell that crashed on Mars; the shell was the size of a fist. The Martians put a motor in it and used it as a car. One day they drove to Earth on a space bridge they had built and bought boxes of food. They brought the food back to their planet, and after they got the boxes there, they found out that the boxes were empty. The Martians went on a search, and when they found the food floating in space, they put the food back in the boxes and returned it to their planet. They were happy to know they wouldn't go hungry for 9 , 999,999 years. John Howell m h ffl

A GREAT DAY
It's 7: l A.M. and the farmers are just getting up. Some funny things are coming to hold us and clean our cages. Mother Bunny says they're people. One person picks me up and touches my fur. Then he passes someone called David, who has brown hair. Now it is some time like 8:10 A.M. Another group of people are coming to hold us. There are six people in this group. Three people want to take me to pet. On is named Chris. At 9:00 A.M. another group of people came to pick us up. Some of the people fed us carrots and cabbage. Afew of them had green patches on their shoulders. There is one very tall one who has a backpack. It's 1:00P.M. and Mommy thinks this is the last group to come see us. One boy picks me up and pets me. Another one picks my sister up and pets her. Now it's 1:20 P.M. and the people are starting to get into their cars. I start feeling a little bit sad about the nice peiple that came to visit us today. I hope they^will come again. Han-Yang Lo<
I am just a new pup. I have to 1 earn a l o t o f things before I will be a good bull. Everybody is making a fuss over me, because I'm so little. I can't help it that I'm so little, because I was just born! I mean who could help it? A lot of people come to see elephant seals like me. I can't swim yet, because I'm too little. I will learn later when I am bigger. Did you know my daddy can hold his breath for about forty-five minutes? "No." You didn't? You had better read more books about the elephant seals. If you want to know, I am about four feet ^°n®*

INDIAN LACE If you w ^ who first made ] and why, this story will tell you all about lace. Long, long ago in the Cherokee Indian tribe Chief Certally and his friend Mistress Certally decided to make something fancier than plain cloth. Soon they had all of the Indians in the tribe trying to maie something different from plain cloth, but nobody could make anything different. Then one day, a day which at first everyone thought was horrible, Baby Creetoes had cut holes in his new clothes. Everyone was mad at little Cretoes, except Mistress Certally. She said, " Don't be mad at the baby. See, he's made beauti ful patterns in the cloth." Then they decided to cut patterns in more and more cloth and to this very day, we still use lace to decorate our clothes. Sarah Gilliland THAT DAY When I woke up this morning, the farmer said to me that the third grade from Phillips Brooks School was coming early this morning. I was really frightened. I went to wake up my mommy and daddy, who's a jackrabbit, but they wouldn't wake up. I squeaked, but they would not get up. I hopped on them, but they still would not get up. The farmer opened my cage and gave me a carrot. I went over to the wall to get some water, but I fell into the dish and got all wet. Soon the third graders came and they looked at me and laughed, because I was all wet. They took some carrots and lettuce and fed them to me. At first I was scared. Then I wasn't afraid anymore and they petted me. After a while the children left, and my parents slept through the whole thing! I also got tired and fell asleep. Chris Dolinar
TWO BEAUTIFUL DAYS I am watching these things which we call people, I think I am three months old. " Chocolate," said my mother, " it's time for your swimming lesson." I went to the water with my mother. I am continued, next page)
(TWO BEAUTIFUL DAYS, continued) pretty good. I got on my mother's back and I had to move my fins to make us go. Then I had to try it alone. I did, and I could swim ! I played in the water a long time. Then I had my dinner. The next day I saw two bulls fighting, so I watched with my mother. And before the day ended, I had a new dad! dlaire Tnsel
MY BASKET When I was walking down the forest path, I found a little basket in the bushes. At first I just stared at it. Then I picked it up and examined it. It was quite pretty. It had a little handle with a plastic flower on it. It was dark brown and it had lots of little dots all over it. I quickly ran home and showed it to my mother. I guess she liked it. Later, right before dinner, my mother asked me to go out into the garden and pick some green peas for dinner. I took my little basket with me. When I was finished, I came in and gave them to my mom, then went back out to pick some flowers for the dinner table. The next day I took my little basket to school for show and tell. When I brought it up to the front of the class, everyone started to laugh and they were saying," Oh, look at that funny little basket. Ha, ha, ha!" I broke into tears right there on the spot. My teacher stopped the laughing and I went to go sit down. After school, when I got into the car, my mom asked me, "How did it go today?" I did not answer and I just stared at her. I think she got the picture. She started the car and we went to run some errands. When we got home, v/e went straight to dinner and did not wait for dad, because it was too late and he was eating out with some customers of his company. It stormed that night and I left my basket out m the^ sandbox in the backyard. When I got in bed, I remembered it. I ran outside when the storm was over and found it in the sandbox. It was dripping wet and the wood had turned white. You could not see the little white dots on it and the flower had disappeared. I started to cry. My little basket had been ruined by the storm. When Mom picked me up at school the next day, she handed me a green box with a red ribbon. I said," But it's not my birthday."' She said," I know, but I think this will make you feel better." I opened it and there was a dark brown basket with dots and a flower! I said, " Thank you, Mom! " But I will never forget the basket that was wrecked by the storm. Sarah Sewell

A TINY MAN
anybody. Then something tugged on my pants. I looked down. It was a little man about one inch tall. He was wearing ripped pants and a red shirt and was riding on a silver starfish. He said, » My name is Peter. I was lost in a storm on the other side of the cape." I took him home and gave him a bed. The next day Peter said he had to go to see his mom. Erin Dirks A HORRIBLE LAY Hi, I'm a baby lamb, and when I got up this morning, I found my toes stuck in the wire of my cage. 7:15 A.M. I was still very sleepy when some big Martians11 came into my house. One of them ran over to me and picked me up in a weird way. They all smelled like icky violet perfume that stunk to me. Then they screamed, " Look! A baby lamb!" and ran off with me to a bigger "Martian," who finally told her to put me down. Meanwhile, my mom was outside. I ran out there to find a new baby lamb! He was black and very fuzzy and cute. I went over to greet him with a baa, but he would not talk to me. Finally after six "baas," he gave out one weak baa. Boy, I'm hungry! I have got to have something to eat! Yum! Alfalfa hay! Uh, oh, my mom's calling me. Bye! Mitch Matheu A LITTLE ELEPHANT SEAL'S LIFE Hello, I'm a little pup. Seems to me there's been a lot of fighting going on. My dad is the big alpha bull. He has the biggest harem on this beach! He has challenged at least ten bullsknd he has beaten every one of them. They all go to bachelors' beach. I know it's something like that. Now I'm in a big clump. I'm so squished I could die. I just woke up from a long nap. I think I'm going to lie down here and enjoy the sun. It sure feels good to have sand on your tummy. I guess I dozed off again. Oooh! What are those things over there? They're about as big as I am. They have hair on their heads and they walk on their back flippers, although they don't look much like flippers. Then the big one said, " People, please! " I wonder what that means.Soon I heard a noise. It was my mom. "Glug, where are you? " "Here, Mom!" "Oh, there you are! I've been looking for you for hours. It's late and it is time for you to go to bed!"

ELEPHANT SEALS AT ANO NUEVO It’s 10:30A.M. and there’s another group of "things" coining to look at us. My pup is asking the bull what’s going to happen. The bull answers, "Well, it’s nothing like a herring gull and then it's nothing like a fish. It's some weird thing that walks on two legs just like the ones that came at 8:30. But you wouldn't know, you were just born an hour ago." Then I said, " I wonder what they're going to do. Oh, well, I'm going to take a swim." "Oh, can't I?" asked the pup. "Well, you could, but you're way too young. You can stay here and play in the sand. You can learn how to swim in a few months." Then the bull said, " Well, it's getting dark. Do you want dinner?" "Yes," said the pup. "O.K. do you want shrimp or squid?" "I feel like squid tonight." "That's fine. I"ll have to go swimmimg for it. You stay here by this bush. Bye! Oh, do you want a half squid or a whole one?" "I guess a half squid. I'm not too hungry." Lauren Berkeley THE WEIRD ROCK I went outside and I found a very weird rock. It had white spots and black spots on it and looked like salt and pepper. I tasted it; it was hot like pepper and bitter like salt. Then it changed colors. It turned green. I tasted it again, and it tasted like lime soda pop. I went back into my house and jumped inside my time ma chine back to three trillion years B.C. To my surprise, I saw cavemen sprinkling salt and pepper and lime soda on a rock. They sprinkled two or three rocks just like that, but with different ingredients. When I got back home, I found the three other rocks. I licked them. One tasted like cherry soda, another tasted like peppermint ice cream, another tasted like cinnamon and spice. They never ran out of flavor. So I can taste sweet things and hot and bitter things at no cost for the rest of my life! Korin Crawford LITTLE PUP I am a little elephant seal pup- only five years old. When I first came to Ano Nuevo, I was really scared. A clump of seals came to me. I thought they were going to hurt me, but they were trying to be friendly. The next day the seals told me why they were in a clump. It was because there was danger. They were trying to protect me. I did not know that. An alpha bull said, " Hurry, there are some kind of weird people or creatures coming!"

(LITTLE PUP, continued) The cow said, " I think we are weird." “But we are not," I said. I had fun that day. I went to ask a seal if I could have some squid. He said, "Yes," I became very full. It was a great day. The next day I wanted someone to teach me how to swim. I asked a few seals and they said, " No, because we want to see the new pup." At last I found a seal that wanted to teach me. He told me how to breathe under water. It is fun! I learned a lot at Ano Nuevo and did not want to leave. When I was hungry, I could find food or squid by myself. I like swimming a lot. It is so fun. I thanked the seal. He said, " You are welcome." Evelyn Tom

5-1 SHOULD I DO IT? Once, -on a warm summer Say, my family and I v/ent swimming. Back then I was only four years■ old and would not go to the deep-end of the swimming pool, for I was afraid the drain would suck me up. My family was playing, swimming, and jumping off the diving board while I was in the shallow-end feeling sorry for myself. I started to dog-paddle around when my dad emerged from the water and said, "Do you v/ant to jump off, too?" I thought about it and finally got out of the water. I slowly, walked to the diving hoard. I looked down into the vast blue water and said to myself, "There's no turning back, I think. My family was coxing me to do it but I stalled, trying to think of an excuse not to jump off. My whole body was tense and shaky when I said to myself, "If I jump, my dad will save me from the killer drain." I gathered up all my strength and courage and jumped. SPLASH!!!! 1 had done it and' the drain didn-'t get me! I quickly ran up and did it again and again. Now I am never afraid of "The killer drain".
THB STUCK-UP DCS One afternoon 1 was eating lunch when I saw our neighbor's dog running around on the street. I swiftly stuffed the rest of my sandwich in my mouth and streaked into the street. I grasped hold of the dog's collar and ran to our neighbor's house. I rang the beli. No answer. I rang again. Again no answer. I took the dog into my back yard and closed the gate. The dog got scared and tried to get through two bars on the gate. "He got halfway through and got stuck. I phoned the Humane Society to try to get the dog out. Ten minutes later, a truck arrived and a man leaped out and raced toward the gate. The dog got scared and backed right out of the gate! I went to our neighbor's house and rang the_ bell frantically. A TEACHER ON ROLLER SKATES This morning I was going up to the office to get Mrs. Westmoreland, so she would open the cla.ssroom door a.s I always do. All of a sudden I saw' someone on roller skates that looked like Mrs. Westmoreland. "It can't be she!" I muttered to myself. "She is much too old to be roller skating! I went up to get a closer look at her and, just then, she tumbled over. I asked, "Why are you wearing roller skates to school?" She explained, "I thought it would be fun to roller skate around the classroom instead of stomping from one desk to the other. It gets boring after a. while, going around classrooms for years a.nd years." Finally the bell rang and I was hoping I was just imagin ing things. If it was really true, she'd be falling on top of everyone!! But when everyone was sitting down, Mrs. Westmore land came into the classroom and started to do a figure-eight. Right in the middle she fell down, and there was so much chaos and bedlam in the class I couldn't even hear my own thoughts! This was all I could take! This person just couldn't be Mrs. Westmoreland. There had to be some mistake. I walked up and she said, "Paige, isn't this neat? I've never had so much fun in my life!!" "You know my name?" I asked. "Of course! 'Why wouldn't I? I've been your teacher almost a year!" exclaimed Mrs. Westmoreland. "But you can't bo Mrs. Westmoreland. Che is too old and has too much dignity!" I shouted so I would be able to hear myself. "Can't I have a break? Do you think it's fun being strict all the time?" As she asked this, I gulped. I had never thought of that. I went back to my seat and still thought about that. I will never forget this day!!

A HALLOWHEN NIGHT THAT WILL BREAK YOU OUT Today I decided to go to my house the back way with my friend Bill. To get to my house, you have to enter and cross a dark, gloomy, and spooky forest. Bill was a little scared. He asked me, 'Aw. Adam, can't we go the regular way?" I stated, "aren't you bored with the regular ’way? "Bill, s Halloween night and we will get to my house And besides f3 st or •** "Okay," Bill said, "I guess we can go the forest way. "Gee, Bill, you're swell." As we entered the gloomy forest, a. howling wind whistled through the trees. I was trembling and so was Bill. Suddenly Bill stopped. He pointed to two men walking right into the .earth. I was startled. "Bill," I whispered, "let's follow them." Bill responded in a whisper, "Okay, as long as you know we will be safe." Step by step, we got closer and we could see a trap-door. Just as we were about to open it, the door wriggled and then it opened. We stood there frozen. A man appeared in the door and shouted, 'Hey, you kids get out of here." , , , We tried to run, but it was as though we were paralyzed. In an instant the man came out. I tugged at Bill and we started to run. We were almost at our house when Bill ana 1 fell m 'a hole. The man stopped, thinking something terrible had happened to us. It wasn't' all that dark so we could see. It appeared that we were in a cave with a tunnel to the north, We started to run through the tunnel as fast as we couln. It seemed to go on forever. We v/asted no time getting out of it Suddenly the tunnel stopped and Bill ran light into the wall.
I stopped, too. "Bill " I asked, "what happened? "I think this is the end of the line," remarked Bi^l. V/e s t a r t e d pounding on the wall until our fists were cut Then, like, a miracle, the wall opened into my bedroom and my mom was standing right there! the tunnel9" "So ""she stated, "you found the tunnel.
"I guess we did," I remarked. "How did-you find it?" my mom asked. So Bill and I told her the story. That night we didn't go near the gloomy forest when we trick-or-treated. And we never took that shortcut from school again! By TODAY 18 DIFFERENT Today was Friday the 13th. Our class was sitting at our desks, as usual. All of a sudden the teacher came in 'wearing light green roller skates. I knew today was going to be different! She was wearing a hot pink ribbon in her hair, which looked rather silly. Her sweatshirt was pink and yellow, and her socks were lavender. I almost fell over in my chair laughing - but I didn't. She didn't look like a teacher at all. She exclaimed, "Class, I was thinking, and I decided that roller skates were a good way of transportation. So I decided to come to school wearing them." Then she started skating out of the room. We all sighed. But she came right back carrying a big stereo. We were all wondering wha.t she was going to do with it. She set it down on her desk. She turned it on full blast. Then she screamed, "Isn't this fun?" We didn't say anything, but she stood up and started dancing with her roller skates on. "Get up and dance, class," she yelled. Of course we had to do what she said. So we got up and sta.rted dancing. Right then the principal walked into our classroom. He said in a. deep voice, "I could hear this rotten music from the office!" "Uhh, well , we were just having a. little fun," she said, "And what are you doing with those silly skates on?" "They're a good way of transportation. Better than ca.r£ They make the sir polluted, and skates don't." for instance. "I order you to take off those skates, and i f you don't, I'll have no choice but to fire you. If "O.K. , I will take off the skates, but I im going to wear them ho m e ." "And turn the music down, and I mean off." Then the principa.l left the room, "Now, class, I have for tl}e girls, nailpoli -h. One bottle each _ and you may do anything you wish with it. For the boys, I have a nerf football for each of you. Nov/ you may stay in the classroom and play ii While we were playing, one of the boys threw a football through the window and broke it We heard footsteps, and we knew the principal v/as here. He stepped in and screamed, "You're fired!" W e are going Then the teacher said, "Excuse us, class to have a talk.*1 They went out.
5-9 The principal walked hack in and said, "Tomorrow a substitute’will he here." The day was finally over, and the last hell rang. I couldn't■wait to see our substitute. It was the next day when I rode my hike to school. The class v/as sitting at their desks like perfect people, when a. lady came roller skating into the room. Now this was hard to believe - a substitute exactly like our other teacher. She was wearing light green roller skates, a. hot pink ribbon in her hair, a sweatshirt of pink and yellow, and s of lavender. Nov/ I know why Friday the 15th is had luck.
THE SHRINKING POTION THAT RUINED MY LIEl One day I was walking through the park, and I saw a bottle with oink liquid inside it. I v/as surer-thirsty because I had :just played a long tennis match in the hot sun. The liquid inside the bottle looked really tasty. I picked up the bottle and unscrewed the cap. I tipped the bottle and let the liquid flow into my dry mouth. It tasted nauseating. After a week I noticed that 1 was getting smaller and smaller. The next day I v/as only one inch tall. Whenever I tried to skate board with my friends, I would fall under the wheel and get scraped badly. Whenever I tried to kick a soccer ball, it was like trying to kick the Empire State Building. Just think, when I tried to go to the bathroom, I would probably drown. I could eavesdrop and spy on people when they were saying things about me. At school I would have to sit on top of my desk and use a two centimeter long pencil. Whenever I tried to eat something, I would probably choke to death. After I thought about all the things I could and couldn't do. I decided that it wasn1 worth it stay small. I thought of a million different ways of trying to get back to my normal size. All the ways, though, were impossible and I couldn't think of any realistic ways. Then I suddenly thought, "How did the bottle get there? Somebody must have bought it or something like that." I decided to go to the nearby grocery store and look for a bottle that said, "This potion will make me bigger". When I got in the store, I*searched everywhere for a long time. After a while I decided to go home. Just as I was leaving the store, I glanced a.t a shelf and saw some bottles. I went over there to look, and one of the bottles said, "This potion will make you bigger." I was very happy, so I went over to the cashier's desk and bought it. As soon as I finally got out of the store, I opened the bottle a.nd drank all the potion inside in one gulp! When I finally got home, I looked in the mirror and nothing had changed. I kept looking in the mirror. Finally I noticed that I had grown some. It got late, so I went to bed after a. while. In the morning when I v/oke up, I noticed I wa.s as big as the biggest giant. - I w a ^ h u m o n g o u s ! I couldn't fit through

5-10 Then I the doorway . and my hand was as bif as the window. decided tha.+ I -would never get ba d to regular size and my life was ruined, so I put a gun to my head and blew my head off! By SCARY DAY For my birthday I got a crystal ball. As I looked into it, I saw a gloomy castle with soldiers and monsters. It was shocking to see my own family all in the dungeons. Looking all around me, I saw that nobody else was there! I freaked. Quickly, I glanced into the crystal ball and all my friends were in the dungeons, too. I had to save them. Just then I vanished into the crystal ball world. Standing right next to me was the castle. Then I saw the drawbridge closing, so I quickly jumped on it and slid down it. Somebody was coming, so I quickly hid out in a room. Slowly, I turned around and saw a beautiful lady. It was Korn! She was all dressed in beautiful clothes! She was being worshipped by the king and the queen of the castle. She turned around and saw me. She screamed with joy l Just then an alarm went off and I knew they had seen rne. Thinking quickly, I ran upstairs to the dungeons. Right after freeing my family and friends, all the soldiers cornered us. V/e were doomed. v/e saw an open window, and I yelled,"Jump! " Everybody jumped down into the water. v/e were free! Just then I remembered Mom. She was stuck inside. They were going to kill her. Quickly, I told everyone to wait there until I came back. I climbed back up the wall, went through the window, ‘and went to the door where Horn was. Cautiously, I opened it and saw her about to get her head chopped off in a guillotine. I jumped in, freed Mom, and ran out . V/e ran upstairs and jumped through the window. Just before we hit the ground, we were back home. I didn't dare look into that ball again.

By A DIFFICULT CHOICE It was Thursday, April 25, 1985, and I had a tough decision to make. . In March, our family had planned to get a gray Persian kitten. We had seen it before, and it was the cutest thing you could imagine. Its eyes dr.ooped and its face was so fluffy you could barely see its mouth and nose. It was a boy and we. were going to name him Chauncey. Anyway, we decided to get him around the end of March or beginning of April. But something happened. All the kittens became sick and couldn't be taken away from their mother to get their shots. The woman who owned the kittens told us we would have to wait about two more weeks. There was a problem with that. My parents were going on a. trip and that meant my mother wouldn't be there to take oa.re of the kitten when my sister, my brother, and I were at school. My mom decided that it would be best not to get Chauncey until my parents came back home. That wasn't until May 2nd.
5-11 A week before ray parents came home, Thursday, April 25, I went to school in the was the day I made the decision. morning. I came home from school and ray babysitter told me something. She said, "A woman called about a kitten. She told me that v/e can pick up the kitten on Saturday, April 27th, your brother's birthday." Quickly I said, "Hooray!" I wanted that kitten so badly that I was going to burst with happiness. Suddenly I remembered the problem v/e had had before, No one would be at home to take care of the kitten. All night and the next day thought about it. Every minute I changed ray mind. It was a horrible night. Reasons kept passing through my mind. It was only a. week until ray parents got .home. The kitten might not get enough food. He'll sleep most of the time. He won't have anyone to play with, On Friday night I knew I just had to decide. I thought about it once more, and I figured that it was much better for Chauncey to be happy. I ran to the kitchen and explained that to my sister, brother, and babysitter. They all agreed. When my pa.rents got home, we decided on a date .. It was to be May 4, 1985. By ^ r a f i v T

"I can’t believe it," I thought to myself. "Everyone's wacko." I sat down and decided to see what the special experiment was. Mrs. Rigs turned around a.nd pa.ssed around a. different bottle to each of u s . I read the label on mine. It said PIZZA. My mouth started to water; I wanted to taste the potion. 1 drank the whole bottle and closed my eyes so I wouldn't see what would happen. 1 felt strange so I decided to open my eyes to see what had happened. "I opened my eyes. Everything had grown much bigger or else I had shrunk. I had shrunk! "Oh, no!" I yelled, "Help! I've shrunk! Help!" but nobody heard me. I ran all around the school and crawled under the door of my classroom. My stomach was grumbling, so I decided to crawl up the counter to get something to eat. It was not easy! Finally I got to the top by climbing up a jacket. I crawled into a. lunch bag and saw a Twinkle. Yum, it looked good, so I walked over to it and dug until I got to the cream. All of a sudden the lunch bell rang. I was trapped in someone's lunch! I felt thebagk being lifted up, carried, and set on the bench. Nov.' was my chance! I hid behind the bench. I was safe. Now I needed to get back in the science room and drink some more of that stiiff and hope to grow big. I ran to the science room and crawled under the door. There was the bottle, on top of the table. 1 started climbing up the table, which wasn't too easy. Finally I reached the top and walked to the bottle. There it was. I started climbing up the bottle. I was about to reach the top when suddenly I slipped. Luckily I quickly caught hold and started climbing again. I jumped into the bottle and took a sip. Then I started growing and the glass broke. Soon I was my normal size. "Ah,J it feels good to be big again," I said. I walked to the classroom because the bell had just rung. "why is everything so strange?" I asked Mrs. Mult. "Didn't you get the paper that said everyone would be strange today?" asked Mrs. Mult. Just then I fainted. That s why everyone was weird.

A Reporter: the Year 2000 February 23, 2000 - It feels so good to be able to come e from my office at the Daily News to my cozy San Francisco apartment and Whiskers, my cat, and Gold, Brown, and White, the three goldfish. I fix myself some hors d'oeuvres and feed the cat before sitting down to read the mail; two birthday cards, a letter from my pen-pal, and a copy of Time magazine. I've got to finish a story and then I will go to bed. I'm really tired. February 29, 2000 - Today the editor sent me out to cover a gigantic Leap Year celebration on a yacht in the bay. I think the hostess s name was Susan Henderson. I remember her from somewhere, though I'm not sure where. March 9, 2000 - Amazing! The Daily News printed my story on Alcatraz (they're rebuilding the jail for prisoners) as one of the main headlines in this evening's paper. This is the a rtic le :
ALCATRAZ TO BE REOPENED Alcatraz Prison - The Board of Directors here announced today that the government plans to reopen the jail for prisoners. Bob Ryan, the head of the project, brought the plan to the San Francisco City Council in January. After numerous problems concerning the safety of Bay Area cities, a team of scientists and engineers dis covered a method of keeping the lawbreakers on the island, though at the moment they will not reveal what it is. If their plan goes through, the island prison should reopen by June, 2001. March 10,2000 - I'm really proud of myself, especially becaus.e now I've been promoted to reporting more important things than parties and other entertainment. The editor told me that^tomorrow I will be going to cover President Arthur Lansing s arrival. I certainly am coming up in this world. Betsy Gilliland

One Week to Live I found out that day in the doctor's office that I only had one week to live. The doctor said I had a new disease called Anobe that they could not cure, but the disease would not affect my strength. If I did get sick, my chauffeur would take me to the hospital. On the way home I was thinking about when my mom and dad died. Their last words were,"Spend our wealth wisely." I remembered those words and thought how I could give my money and treasures away. I called the doctor that night and told him I wanted to build a research center named after me to help find antidotes to cure all diseases. Then I called the Library of Congress and asked if someone could help me set up a medical library. I got off the phone and started to change my will. My chauffeur would inherit all seven of my cars. My maids would receive all my antiques. Then the day came when I was suppose to die. My chauffeur took me to the hospital. When I went into the room, the doctor followed me, laughing. I thought he was beserk, laughing on the day of my death. Then he said, "The computer made a mistake, you're going to live. You don't have a disease. Joyfully I rushed home, eager to get back to my wealth and to live a wonderful life. Brian Moran

Hi' My name is Z.Z.Top. I'm in Hamster Heaven. Life is so wonderful up here. My previous life was not nearly as enjoy able. Let me tell you about it. Danny Liebgold, my owner, was the worst offender of animal unhappiness. First of all, my teeth never stop growing so I have to constantly gnaw to keep them trim and worn down. Danny never gave me anything to chew on, so I had to chew on the bars of my cage or my teeth wouid grow too long. I never had interesting nest materials or fun toys, so some of my few joys in life were eating and drinking. He hardly ever cleaned my cage, and when he did, he always had an angry expression on his face. Really, if he wanted me to go to the bathroom in my cage and not make a mess, he should have given me a little toilet. In Hamster Heaven we are provided with ail the proper facilities. . , , ,, , Whenever he reached in my cage (which was hardly ever), he would charge his giant hand toward me amd try to grasp my middle. The only way I could defend myself was with my teeth. Then Danny would fling me across the cage. Life wasn't going well at all. Things weren't getting any better. I had to do some thing, so one night I ate my last -meal and prayed my last prayer. I crawled into my nest and fell into a deep slumber. Well, I guess God liked my prayer because when I awoke 1 ™a s at the gates of Hamster Heaven. An old lady called, Z.Z.iop. "I'm here," I answered. Then she led me to a beautiful chamber where gorgeous hamsters with haloes, wings, and mandolins sang sweet songs to me. Here I am and here I'll stay.

High Suspense At one of my music institutes, my friend Jeff and I did something extremely crazy. During one of our free periods, we decided to go exploring around the building. First we were just wandering around until my friend asked me if I would like to go and investigate the lighting system back stage, I agreed, so we took off for the theater. The lighting system consisted of about forty lights strung across the stage. There were two ladders on different sides of the stage. One went up to a lighting computer with all these wires everywhere, and another went up to a box office. We climbed up it quietly because there was a class in session on stage. We climbed to the fifth floor, but then climbed back down to the second floor. We hurried through the box office, walked down a staircase, and came out through a corridor. Then we decided to climb up the other one. We met two girls Jeff and I knew. They followed us to the other ladder, but only the older girl would climb it. Our climbing point was a walkway about five stories high and stretched thiry feet across. The younger girl said she would stay down at the bottom and watch us. We made it to the top and started to walk on the walkway. The metal in the walkway crisscrossed in neat patterns so you could see through it. In a little while, two ladies walked in and saw the younger girl looking up the ladder. She said, "There are some people up there, but I don't know who they are." She was trying to cover up for us, but she goofed it. The ladies saw us up there and got pretty mad. They said things like "I don't know who they are, but if I see their faces again, I'll recognize them." Soon they left, only to hide and try to see who we were. I climbed down as fast as I could and darted out the door. For the rest of the day, I stayed pretty close to my mom. A Spoiled Dog
Hi, I am Max, Mrs. Altrocchi's dog. She calls me her "little boy", her "baby". In reality, I'm Julie's dog, but, almost all the time I stay with Mom, except to give me food and a bath; then I'm Julie's (only) dog! I'm very small, I have brown and black hair, and my eyes are black, but you can't really see them because of the blond hair which hides them. Mrs. Altrocchi and Julie say I am cute and everything. When Mom, Julie, and Helen come back from school, I go near the door', and when •they open it, they shout a lot for me. Me, I jump to tell them I'm happy. I live the whole day in the kitchen, because nobody is here. When they go on vacation, Mom and Julie are almost crying when they leave me with Sally or somebody else. Sometimes, I do something bad (ex: I run out of the house). When I come back, Mom and Julie call me "bad boy" and two seconds after, they are kissing me. Well, everything is good for me in this house, everybody loves me, and I am almost spoiled! ! (

My Most Embarrassing Moment My most embarrassing moment was probably at camp with my best friend Lindsay in the summer of 1984. It was our last night at camp and it turned out to be a disaster for me. It all started when we went back to our rooms after d m e Lindsay went into our room to change, but instead of changing, I went into a friend's room with a Mexican girl named Nicole. The only problem was that my friend wasn't there. Everybody had gotten 7ups after dinner, so Nicole and I sat down and waited for Natasha, the friend whose room we were in. After ten minutes, Natasha still wasn't back. That's when Nicole dared me to pour 7up on Natasha's only pillow. I didn t want to, but then she triple-dared me. I didn't want her to think I was a chicken, so I went ahead and did it. Later Natasha came in and lay down on her bed. "Anna," she yelled. "Anna." Stomping down the hall came Anna, a big Mexican counselor. "Somebody poured 7up on my pillow," Natasha whined. "Nicole did you do this?" Anna questioned. "No, Ashley did," replied Nicole. "Ashley, why did you do that?" she asked. "Nicole dared me," I" said. "Nicole, come here," Anna said, practically yelling. All of a sudden Nicole and Anna started talking in Spanish and I didn't know what they were saying. Anna said something in Spanish and pointed to my room. I walked into my room in sort of a daze. "What happened?" Lindsay asked. "I don't believe it! I just got punished in Mexican." Ashley Brooks

Timing and Luck About a week ago, I almost got stuck washing police cars on my vacation. My friend, Malachi, was over and we had decided we were going to go teepeeing with my sister that night. At around 12:30 we couldn't wait any longer* our anxiety was building up. So I went to the bathroom and got six rolls of toilet paper. We decided to adorn the next-door neighbors' yard because we were angry at their little boy, because it was convenient, and because we were mad at things they had done in the past; but that is another story. Also, their house was fun to do*, we had done it previously. We went out our back door, because it did not squeak, and advanced our way to the street. We started our task and then a car came by. There was a path behind the front fence which was covered with Lvy, thus making it an excellent hiding place. We hid behind it. The car drove on so we continued our business. After we each had used up our two rolls I said, "Let's each get another roll. This is getting pretty fun!" So we tiptoed back to the bathroom amd we each got one more roll. Back outside, the house was beginning to look good. Long strands were draped from the trees, the bushes were covered with t.p., and the driveway, back behind their house, was beautifully decorated. Katie went to the back of the house while Malachi and I finished up the front. A car drove by and we hid. The car drove on so we continued to do our job. Then another car drove by, and Malachi and I hid. Katie was still in the back. The car pulled over and Mai and I realized there were red and blue lights flashing on the top of the car. Mai and I took off. We sprinted through the back of the yard and trampled the garden. Before we hopped the fence, I took a quick look around for Katie, hue I couldn't see her. I couldn't take time to look for her because the police dog was after me. After we had hopped the fence, we went inside. I couldn't stand it any longer! Where was my lttle sister? Had she been caught? Did the dog give up on my trail and was he now trying to find Kate? Should we go get Kate? If we did we would probably get caught! After ten minutes of painful suspense, we decided to go back and look for her. We walked out to the street and to the front of the driveway. "Kate!" I called in a whisper. "Yah," the voice was faint. "Come out! I commanded softly. "No!" was the reply. "Kate, the police are coming!" She was past me in two seconds, running as hard as she could to our house. Malachi and I were.with her. Later, in bed, we all told our versions of the story. Katie said when she saw the car, she hid in the bushes. Then she smeared her face in the mud so as not to have the oil on her face glow. The police had looked straight at her but didn't notice her. Kate told us the police had still been in the back of the house looking for us. Our timing helped us escape! Suzanne Bryan
