I would 1ike to be a kite. They are pretty.

If I were, one of my clothes would be pinks, whites.

I would love to talk to the clouds.

And it would be fun being a kite.

I was working in my garden when all of a sudden I saw a snail eating all the vegetables that I was planting. I said to get out of here, but he would not go. He bit into a tomato and he said he was going to live there. So I sold my house.

Even now I had a mansion.

But it was the only way to get rid of a snail.

And I lived happily ever after.

But he didn't.

It's coming this way, duck!

I got on it. Zoom.

It took me to Hawaii and I had fun there, very much fun. But then I had to go home.

But before I did I saw a real rabbit. So I bought her. She was only $10 and 15 < and she liked the ride home, too. And her name is Carrots. She is all white.

She is very, very, very cute.

She made friends with my puppy, Annie. And I sometimes let her out, not always.

And I kept the magic carpet and I ride on it where ever we go.

I saw a purple rabbit eating a blue carrot.

He came up to me and sniffed my feet.

I said "Hi!" But he just kept munching his carrot. Then he hopped away but I still wonder about it.

But I got on it anyway.

And it took me to Mars. When the magic carpet disappeared I was sad because I missed my mommy and daddy. Then one day it came back and took me home.

If I could be something red, I think I would like to be a red doll because someone could buy me and keep me.

It was time for lunch. After lunch we went back to school.

His legs were rattling. The man on the horse was so angry that he turned red. Oh, I mean very very red. Wei 1 , the man got so mad that he turned red and the same time that his hair was sticking out of his head. Oh boy did I see a mad man in my whole life.

He got mad, he got fat and he blew up. Wei 1 that was the end of him. And the horse was sold.

So that's why not to get so mad.

Then the pig took the fish from the mole.

The Ant and the Termite Once upon a time there was a termite and an ant. The termite said he was going to eat a table in two hours.

The ant said he would like to see him do it. The termite tried to do it, but he couldn't finish in two hours.

Moral: Some things are easier said than done.

How the Giraffe Got His Long Neck

One day the giraffe got a letterin the mail.

And this is what it said: Dear Gi raffe, You are invited to come and see the great running race on Tuesday, March 27, 1 at 6:00 to 11:00.

Hope you can come.

Frank Bags Well, as you could see, he was very excited because he really liked running and winning too.

The next day he got ready.

He had a nice breakfast and drove off in his shiny red car. When he got to the race he sat down and pretty soon 1-2-3 bang!

All the runners started running. "Go! Go! Go!" he yelled. “ Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!" And the winner was Frank Bags. 11Yaaaaaaaeeee!

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaeeeeeeee!" At the end of the race they gave tickets for people who would like to be in the next race. Of course Giraffe took one. When he got home he called the race track.

He was to be in the race next week.

He could not sleep at all. He just kept on thinking of the race.

Finally the great day arrived.

He got dressed, ran down stairs, and hopped in his car and drove off.

When he got there, he got in his place and pretty soon, 1-2-3-go!

And everyone started running but Giraffe was winning.

He could see the finish line, but he didn't see a tree and his neck got stuck in it but he kept on running.

Finall y he”1got it out, but his neck was so, so long.

But he caught up and he still won and he was a star and that is how giraffe got his long, long neck.

How The Rabbit Got Its Long Ears Once upon a time there was a rabbit.

His name was Carter. He was a bad rabbit. So one day he went into a garden and took some carrots.

But when he was going to go someone saw him and started to chase him. Just then his ears got caught on a picket fence and they stretched.

How the Whale Got His Spout Once there was a whale who breathed by opening his mouth.

He wanted a better way to breathe. One day he was swimming around and a stick came down from the sky and hit him and made a hole in his back. Now he breathes through the hole and now we call it a spout.

Why the Hyena i s Brown

A long time ago, all the jungle animals were nothing but a dull yellow. Hyena was always playing tricks on the other animals. One day Hyena tripped Turtle. Turtle was very upset. He was yelling at Hyena when Zebra walked by and grabbed Turtle. Turtle and Zebra walked away together. The next day Turtle mixed together some beautiful colors!

He painted himself two shades of green. When Zebra saw him she said, "Oh Turtle, you look beautiful! May I have some colors, just like yours?"

Turtle said, "Of course, but you would look better with black and white stripes." Turtle then painted Zebra, and he painted Giraffe bright yellow with brown spots. When Hyena saw everybodys' beautiful colors he definitely wanted some too. He yelled, "I want all the colors you have, Turtle!" The turtle threw all the colors at him, and he turned brown, just plain brown. That's the way he has been ever since.

How the Porcupine Got His Quills One day, a porcupine heard a loud BANG! He was so scared that his skin hardened and he was petrified. Just then a hunter jumped out of some bushes and said, "C'mon, boys! A porcupine!"

Then; about ten men came out of the bushes. They said things like, "He's a beauty!" and'WOWEE!" All at once they shot at it. But since his skin was hard, all the bullets stuck to him.

They said, "Oh my gosh," and "Incredible!" and things like that.

That's how the porcupine got his quills.

How The Giraffe Got Her Long Neck One day there was a gi raffe named Madena.

She had a very short neck. Madena went out for a walk and she saw some nice green leaves.

But they stuck together.

Madena didn't know they were stuck together and she ate the long strip of leaves and this made Madena's neck grow long.

Once there was a rabbit.

It went to school everyday.

One day he was hanging upside down.

Along came a fox. The fox was very mean. The rabbit had mouse-like ears. The fox tried to pull the rabbit's ears.

His ears got longer and longer. And that my friends is how the rabbit got his 1ong ears.

How the Tiger Got His Stripes One day a tiger was looking at his reflection in a pool of water. "I am very dirty.

I think I will go to the carwash to get clean.' So the tiger went to the carwash.

There was a big sign that said, "Closed! Wet paint on the rubber strips." The tiger simply could not read, so he just walked in. By the time he got through the rubber strips the paint was on him. So he walked out and he said, "Now I am clean, but what are these things on my back? Oh well, at least I am clean!"

% Dfl/ki How the Porcupine Got His Quills Once upon a time there was a porcupine.

One day he was walking down a stream.

He walked and walked. And suddenly he heard a snoort, snoort.

It was a bear.

And the porcupine ran and ran. He ran in the woods. And the bear ran in the woods. The porcupine ran up a pine tree.

He was up there for a long time.

When the bec\r was gone the porcupine jumped down on his four legs.

But pine needles were stuck on him. So he went back to Yosemite Valley and followed the stream back home.

Second.

Hidden Villa On Wednesday, November 9, 1984, our class took a trip to Hidden Villa.

While we were there we saw a wild mustang. We also got to feed the pigs. One pig was really big.

The baby bunnies were so small they could fit in the palm of your hand.

When we got to the hens we crawled under the henhouse and found eggs.

We gave the eggs to Frank Dunveneck, the owner of the ranch.

Before we did all this, we went hiking. Our guide's name was Emily.

We had to do something called the Alone Walk. You had to go ahead of the whole group and go to a certain place.

You also had to find three sounds and three smells. We ate lunch in the forest.

It was very fun.

Hi dden Villa I liked a lot of things at Hidden Villa.

I liked the turkey because its neck turned blue.

I liked the chicken eggs because they were warm.

I liked hiking because we played a game.

I liked the garden because we picked leaves.

I liked the goat because she was being milked. The pigs were funny because they were muddy. y~CKfy)//a Hidden Villa I liked Hidden Villa, especially when we went hiking. After we hiked, we went to the chicken house. We were feeding the chickens when I looked under the chicken house and saw eggs. So I told the others and got them to go under the house and get the eggs. We went to tell Mr.

The second grade play Hansel and Gretal was fun.

I think the best thing was playing the parts.

I was Hansel, Claire was Gretal. It was a fun experience.

I hope we can do another play sometime too.

Koi One day I went looking for Koi with my dad. We went from place to place.

Then we found some. We took them home as fast as we could. Then we put them in a bucket. We looked for an aquarium. We found a big one.

Then we bought the parts. We had to get to work. We finished quickly.

Then we bought a Diver that blew bubbles. Then we bought a plant and put it in and put the fish in.

Then I fed them well. They ate all the food in five minutes. Then I watched them. They had to get used to the tank. They darted from side to side. Then they looked at the Diver and swam through the plant.

HOW THE DOLPHIN GOT HIS FIN Once there was a dolphin.

He did not have a fin.

One time a dog said, "I have a tail. Why, you should get a tail like this."

"No, I do not want a tail."

"O.K," and the dog ran off.

So the dolphin went under the water on his way home.

When the dolphin went to sleep, the wizard of the S ea came and said," I am the wizard of the sea.

You are not being good to my friend the dog and you will pay. » That instant the d o l ­ phin got a fin.

The wizard of the sea said, " You will never get out of the water." And the dolphin never did.

I think it started this way.

Once there was a spaceship from Pluto that was going a light year a second, so it took two seconds to get to Earth.

As it was coming through the atmosphere, the land i n g gear broke, so the Aliens had to crash-land.

As they were about to land, they turned on the invisibility shield.

They crash-landed near Phillips Brooks School.

When they crashed, the whole world shook. The Aliens took off shortly after they landed.

That's how the earthquake happened.

Maybe the mice inside could help us," said Timothy, the oldest

son. " I d o n ’t think we should try! " said Ariata, the second youngest.

She was very shy. " Maybe they are mean," agreed Maraya.

They finally went up to the door and knocked.

It wasn't a mouse that opened the door; it was a strange creature. They were all frightened. Timothy said, " Maybe he was the one who started the ground shake." The creature said, " Ground shake?

I didn't cause it, but I know who did. If you will follow me, I will show you what caused it. It is called an earthquake."

"Okay," said Mrs. Mouse, " we will follow you."

The strange creature led them up a mountain that was ho£ and dusty.

W h e n they got to the top of the mountain, they saw it was h ollow inside.

Lava poured down the sides!

Suddenly a hand reached out and grabbed Maraya. She screamed, " Help, help!!" but the hand pulled her down.

The others scrambled down after her.

Maraya was put in a cage w i t h many giants m d e r her.

They started arguing about what they should do \rith her.

Then they got up and threw b i g boulders at each jther. The ground started to shake, and so did the rest of the woods.

Timothy, Ariata, Mrs. Mouse, and the strange creature who was a frog) climbed up to Maraya's cage and released her.

The five of them made it out of the mountain. One of the giants noticed Maraya was gone and the earthquake stopped, e mice thanked the frog and went home.

So that's how earthquakes are made.

BY TOLLY JONES When I was w r i t i n g a math paper in school, I saw the computer turn on b y itself.

It was strange and then the teacher asked, "Who turned on the computer?" Nobody answered, so I decided to stay after school.

While I was looking around after school, the table moved. I was scared and there was n o b o d y in the room. At least I thought there wasn't. Then I saw something strange about the b u l l e t i n board. It was curled like it could be moved, so I pulled on it and it moved.

Then I noticed a crack shaped as a door.

I almost pushed on it, but then somebody walked into the classroom, so I quickly put e v e r y ­ thing back and ran out the back door and went home.

The next day at school the lights went on and off and the computer was gone.

Our teacher got so scared that she had the class go to another room. But in order to solve the mystery I hid under my desk.

The teacher did not notice.

Then I opened the bu l l e t i n board and pushed on the wall and there was a passageway.

I heard some voices, so I shut everything v e r y quietly and then r a n to the office and called the police. They came and I took t h e m to the passageway.

Together we went down into it. There was another classroom, our computer, and some of the school's money, and two thieves who had done everything. *

The people in Grumland are very small, but they have b ig feet and are ve r y smart.

These Grumland people are ve r y strange. They go into a city at midnight, take somebody and run ba c k to the forest, and nobody knows what happens to the person. Some people say they eat them. Some people say they make houses out of them.

Nobody really knows what happens to them except me.

I know what happens to them. This is what happens: the Grumlins get t h e m ^ blow through their ears nine times w i t h a jar at the other end.. After they blow nine times, they close the jar; in the jar is a dream.

Then they go to G r u m - d r e a m and b u y a dream. They always buy a dream in the daytime and put it in G r u m -bank and they keep it. But wh e n it's evening, they go to G r u m - h o l i d a y Inn and rest there until .midnight, or others have a p a r t y and rest in a hot-tub.

I want to ask you one thing: do you know w h y I know so m u c h about this? It's because I am a Grumlin myself and I a m going to blow a d r e a m into your ears tonight. *

SEVEN L I TTLE GOBLINS

BY E L I Z A B E T H GILL Once there were seven little goblins; all of them were boys, of course. Most of them were quite sensible, but one named Bugs was quite silly and rather stupid. He got them all into a lot of trouble.

One time w h e n they played follow the leader, Bugs went on top of their cave and jumped off and broke his leg. The others hesitated, but it was follow the leader, so they all jumped off. And the next day none of the goblins went out to 'play. Mother G o blin had a cave full of little sick g o b ­ lins, for they all had brok e n their legs.

But today was different. They were playing follow the leader again, but this time they met an old w o m a n who asked for a . d r i n k of water. She also said whoever said no would turn into a frog. B u g said no, so all the others said no, too.

So instead of seven goblins that came home, seven frogs did.

The moral of this tale is: never do w h a t others do unless you y o u r s e l f think i t ’s right. *

THE S EARC H FOR SOLID TIME

BY MEGAN YOUNG S ^ c e u p o n a time a meteor crashed into the Earth before a n y l i v i n g thing was alive. It crashed into a bu b b l i n g pool and dissolved.

This meteor was very special, for it was something called solid time. W h e n it dissolved, only five pieces r e ­ mained solid. Then the pool b l e w up, scattering them all over the world. As long as the dissolved time was in the air, l i v i n g things could survive.

Soon people started popping up, and animals. tSk Now we will travel forward in time. w The year is 2000. The streets of California go just as usual, except for two girls who knew the story of time and how it came to be. (I was one of those girls.) We also knew that the d i s s olved time was r u n n i n g out, and pret t y soon time w o u l d go wild. People wouldn't know if they were going to be in the middle of a laser war 1000 years from now or in the Civil War. These girls' names were Shane Koo and Megan

This is the b e g i nning of their adventures searching for solid time.

He had just given Shane and Megan important clues for finding the first of the five pieces of solid time, w h i c h they needed to save many lives that were lost in the wars of other centuries.

The clue was that the piece of solid time was buried under Sir Edmund Hillary's first foot-print on top of Mount Everest.

They had gone by plane to the base of Mount Everest.

X CCUJIICU. Now they started up the mountain.

In a few hours they reached the top. Then they were faced wi t h the problem of where they would find the footprint.

Just then an avalanche started.

Shane yelled,"Look out!" But it was too late They slid halfway down the mountain.

Then they started up again. Pretty soon they reached the top, but there was still the problem of finding the footprint.

Suddenly Shane saw something; it looked like a foot-shaped hole. It was the footprint! They started to dig. Pretty soon they came to the top of a lid. They pulled it up. Just under it were two pieces of solid t i m e !

Just then the plane came down, but they had forgotten that loud noises start avalanches. They got into the plane just in t i m e !

As they were flying, Megan saw something glowing yellow; it was another bit of solid t i m e ! She reached out the window and grabbed it. Then Shane grabbed another piece. Now they had four pieces of solid time, but the last was still to be found.

They went back to the old man, who said to go back to the hill where Megan lived. Wh e n they were both driving up the hill, they saw a cave. Inside the cave was a skull, and inside the skull was the fifth piece of solid time! We rushed into the cave and got it out.

Then we went to Megan's house and mixed up some acid and water and put the pieces in the pot.

They dissolved and put time back into the air. The world was safe at last!

All it looked like was a big black blob.

Of course I couldn't see through the window very well because my mom hadn't w a s h e d the windows.

I slowly opened the door and peered out.

You w o u ldn't believe what I saw!

Sitting on our diving board w a s a seal!

There was a trail showing w h e r e the seal had come from.

Qu ietly, s n e a k i n g past the seal, I followed the trail.

In the end t he trail led me to a zookeeper.

I asked the z o o k eeper if the zoo was m i s s i n g a seal.

"Why yes! can talk."

We are!" he said.

"Frank's the owner of the zoo.

Once we were inside the zoo owner's office, the zoo owner said, "Well, what do we have here, Charlie?"

The next day, instead of a bull and bear fight, they buried Father Goto.

E v e rybody was sad and was busy d e c iding who was going to be the new priest.

Some said,

"Father Lasuen should be our new priest."

"No, F ather Taza should be our new priest," shouted others.

They picked F a ther Taza.

Little did they know that F a t h e r Taza had poisoned Goto becaused he wanted F a t h e r Goto's place in the church But one night, a stable hand heard what Taza had done to Goto.

That night the church was havi n g a great feast, so the stablehand ran in and told the people at the feast.

They just laughed at him.

"Come with me and I will prove it to you," he said.

The stablehand convinced some of the people to go with him to see if he was telling the truth, but most of them stayed on and ate like pigs.

The people who went with the stablehand to find out the truth found Taza, arrested him, and brought h im to the jail, where he had to stay for fifty years.

The stablehand was a hero!

It was 8:30, I had to get to school.

I got dressed and went outside.

There was a moto r - s c o o t e r in the driveway.

I looked at it and jumped.

I said to myself, "I don't know h ow to drive!"

Well, I had to get to school somehow!

So I put on the helmet that was on the seat and then I remembered the keys.

I ran in the house and got the keys.

I kept on w o n d e r i n g about how everything happened to be w a iting there for me.

I sat down and started the mo-tor.

I was driving pretty well until I came to a stop sign.

I didn't know how to work the brakes so I just rode right through it.

I was so glad there weren't any cars coming.

I had a little trouble getting to school, I made it just in time.

I walked into the classroom and almost sat down at my schooldesk, but then I remembered that I was the teacher, so I walked to the teacher's desk and sat down.

Just then, I saw me walk in, which was really Mrs. Landreth.

She had my jumper on, my barettes, my shoes, and everything else that I wear to school, and she looked very nervous.

The math class was finally over and recess was next. out that being a teacher was really hard work!

During recess, Mrs. Landreth was playing handball with the other girls and wasn't very good at it because she didn't know how to play.

So she just said that her hand was hurt i n g and walked around the school yards until the bell rang.

Luckily, reading and w r i t i n g we r e next and those subjects were with different teachers.

While those two subjects were going on, I went into the teachers' room to have a cup of coffee.

I've always wondered what coffee tasted like.

So I had a sip of it and almost spit it out in front of all the teachers.

The next day, Tom Cracrofft, a m an who was a hunter and a n a t u r ­ alist, came to shoot tigers and stuff them.

He saw the tiger.

He thought it looked plain, so he painted black stripes on it.

The paint was permanent.

He wanted to carry it h o m e because^then he w o uld have a rare tiger, but it was too heavy.

F o r some reason, the next day was warm.

The tiger w a rmed up and w asn't paralyzed anymore.

He went swimming, but the paint w o u l d n ' t come off.

It just stayed there.

A f t e r that, he went to his friend and said, "Look!

I have stripes!"

"They look nice," his friend said.

"They do?" the tiger asked.

"Sure!

I w i s h I had them," his friend answered.

So the tiger walked very proudly.

Everyone liked his stripes.

One tiger found two colors of paint, brown and black.

The tigers liked both colors.

HOW THE PENGUIN GOT HIS SUIT I am going to tell all about the penguins of Antarctica.

The world had just been created and the penguins were all white.

Once upon a + ime, there was a baby penguin named Jacksavo, which in English is Jack.

Jacksavo loved to play with mud and glue.

All of his life he wanted to know what glue and mud made mixed together, but he never found out.

One day Jacksavo went to visit his uncle the Polar Bear.

The P olar Bear was pretty smart so Jacksavo decided to ask hi m what glue and mud made mixed together.

The Polar Bear said, "Why don't you find out for yourself?"

"Well, you can get mud and glue and mix them together.

A SCARY E XPERIENCE When I was ten years old, a horrifying thing happened at Lake Tahoe.

My brother Augie and I were riding rental Jet Skis on a gorgeous day.

My father had put our boat in neutral while he took pictures.

We were wearing w e t s u i t s a n d life iackets as we rode over the calm water.

I was riding along when all of a sudden I looked over and there was a boat zooming straight at me.

The next thing I kn e w was that I had been run over by this reckless driver.

My father yelled into the dock^ and told them to nail the paramedics.

Bleeding, I was q u i vering as I clung to the boy's boat.

Then my father drove over and picked me up.

I was driver, to Truckee Hospital.

They rushed me to the operating room.

I felt so scared.

The surgery lasted two and a half hours.

They stitched forty g r uesome^stitches on my side.

Now I have complete movement, but I still have a scar.

Two of them, both kittens, live at my mom's house.

Their names are Bella and Fritz.

Today, May 2,198*J-, I went out to feed them.

Usually Fritz comes running to get his b r e a k f a s t b u t this morning I didn't see him anywhere.

I looked up ^ and there was Fritz running back and forth on a branch.

He was trying to get down.

He finally ended up jumping or rather falling down. , , Bella is pretty n o r m a l , but somehow she always goes under the deck, through the wine cellar, and into the garage.

Once, while we were on vacation, she spent five days in there with nothing to eat but Decon rat poison and no water.

Fritz got in, too .J They decided to go to the b a t h r o o m _i n _the trunk of our car.

Bella had bitten Fritz and he was_limping.

He is all better now as you have gathered, what with gallomp^.ng around in trees.

TT ^ n My third cat is a full-grown cat.

He is a male, long haired, lazy, tiger cat.

His name is Joshua and he_lives at my dad's house.

Our neighbor, Carole, has two finches.

He came in once and ate one.

He n e v e r cares if the quail or gophers are eating young little plants in our garden.

I guess finches are delicacies'.

T H E SMOKE Tom and Debbie were thrilled with the chemistry set their parents had given them.

They spent the entire rainy after n o o n m i x i n g the different colored liquids together. " L e t ’s take a break," said Tom. " O . K . a g r e e d Debbie. " I ’ll leave our experiment on the w i n d o w s i l l . ” . ,, .

Suddenly a bolt of lightning flared across the sky.^ Tom and Debbie turned just in time to see the smoke pouring from the bottle.

Something began to take shape in the smoke.

S o m e thi ng in a dark green color formed.

It was a gargoyle.

It started chasing Tom. Suddenly it pulled out a giant axe, which it threw at Tom, but Tom ducked and it hit the oven.

A spiked club formed in its hand.

It could fabricate any object right hand # Debbie took a kitchen knife ^and threw i inaccurately.

The gargoyle blocked the knife with its club.

It started chasing Tom and Debbie outside. _ .

"Qg't g weapon," yelled Tom, "to try to cut its right hand off! " "1 * 1 1 get the small axe in the garage; you get the pitchfork," advised Debbie. , J . ..

Debbie got the axe and again got blocked when she threw it.

But before the gargoyle turned around, Tom stuck the p i t c h f o r k in its right hand.

Afterwards, Tom thrust it m its back and then it died.

The company that made that chemistry set went out ol business.

5-3 THE WORST DAY OF M Y LIFE February 16, 1981, was the worst day of my life.

Kate, my sister, and I were crossing the street and Amy, our gold e n retriever, followed a couple of yards behind.

It was a sunny, warm day and we were going to our friend's house to play.

Then we heard a loud, screaching ye l p and a car skidding down the street.

I turned around and saw Amy run faster than I'd ever seen her run, heading toward the tennis court.

As we were trying to catch up to Amy, we saw the truck turn around the corner.

We found Amy at the tennis court where my m o m was playing with three other women.

She was bleeding really badly, and I could see she was in pain.

I p r a ctically fainted.

My sister just stood there with her mouth hanging open, and my mom said she had a headache.

My mom and some of her friends got Amy in the car and drove her to the vet.

When my dad got home, he called the vet and asked him to take x-rays of her hips.

When they developed the x-rays, they found Amy had arthritis.

We had her leg amputated and found she got around pretty well.

If she couldn't have managed, we would have had to put her to sleep.

Now Amy is the only three-legged dog on our block!

MY MOTHER My m o t h e r seems to be mean, She's just trying to help me I've seen.

T hough I sometimes think she's unfair, I do know she does care.

The Yosemite posters shine with a g lory that blasts right at you.

The dog posters are so cute; they make me tremble with delight because of the way they sit.

The books with all the different large titles are intriguing.

Our binder p a p e r smells deliciously tasty.

The clock with its red, black, and white color-helps us see it from a far distance.

The green alphabet shows .us clearly how to make our letters beautifully.

The silver sink reflects everything around it.

The chalkboard with its "cheerful white chalk makes me very happy.

The backpacks hanging next to the walls are colorful, yelllow, green, red, blue, and purple.

T H E HIDEOUS, REPULSIVE, UNSIGHTLY C L A S SROOM It was in the middle of a language test when, all of a sudden, I looked up at the classroom.

It was a disgrace to human life!

The blackboard was an abnormal color, and the roof was full of repulsive brown spots.

Then there was the teacher's desk.

How atrocious!

I couldn't bear to look at all those papers scattered all over it.

Those spiritless posters were all ripped up, and the c u p ­ boards were terribly scratched up.

The windows were so _ dirty you could hardly see through them.

The ugly bulletin board paper was gross.

The brown garbage can with an old ragged hole in it looked a bsolutely terrible.

Then all of a sudden a cold breeze woke me from my daydream, and I went back to my test.

A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE When I was eight, I had to go to the hospital and get twenty stitches, ten inside and ten outside.

It all happen ed when m y mom and dad were not home.

My brother, Jon, our babysitter, Jeff, and I were watching T.V. A commercial came on, so I ran to get a tennis ball.

I was not looking where I was going.

I tripped over a box full of legos ano fell on some bricks by the fireplace.

I cut my forehead.

The gash^a-J about one inch long.

Our babysitter saw it He happen.

He got a towel and put it on my forehead. called our next door neighbors.

They hurried over and decided I might need stitches.

I was bleeding a lot, so they rushed me to Stanford Hospital. vie waited for about fifteen minutes before they started to look at me.

They decided that I needed stitches They covered my eyes and started to sew me up.

I could not feel anything.

I had to wear a bandage around my head for two weeks.

Andrea is one of my best friends.

She laughs a lot about stupid things.

Once she made a drink for Ramona's wine tasting party.

It was made of salt, tabasco, and water.

Once when she came over, she ran upstairs and hid herself, and it was very hard to find her.

She is always thinking up strange songs that have weird words or inventing weird things to eat.

She causes me to laugh all the time!

No one will believe me, but I will tell you anyway.

This happened last year, when my m om and dad went on a tour of Europe and we had a sitter stay with us.

That was my mom's biggest mistake yet, because our sitter was Jewish and she didn't know any of our holidays.

A few days before Christmas my sister reminded her by saying, "Are we going to have a tree this year?

How many presents do I get?"

Our sitter looked puzzled, but. then she cried, "Never fear, y o u ’ll have a tree this year!" £ Q & "Good!

A big one or a small one?"

"Hmm. I'm not sure."

Our sitter, called Janice by us, was not sure because she didn't know what we meant by tree.

She went shopping the next day and came back with her arms loaded.

After she put her bags down on the kitchen counter, Janice closed the door and y e lled at us, " D o n ’t come in here.

I'm fixing up Christmas."

On Christmas m o r n i n g my sister shook me until I opened my eyes, "'.'hat's the matter?" I asked, thinking it was a fire or something.

"Come downstairs and look!" she commanded.

"Christmas is ruined!"

Uh, oh, I thought.

Janice m u s t have forgotten.

But she hadn't.

It was worse.

There, in the living room, we saw Easter baskets, colored eggs, and two stuffed rabbits.

In the corner of the room there was a small Christmas tree.

At least she got that right, I thought.

Janice came down the stairs at that moment.

She was smiling, but when she saw our faces, she stopped.

"What's the matter?" she asked.

"I did it right, d i d n ’t i?"

"Oh, Janice.

This - this is Easter!"

I blurted out.

"Don't worry, though, it's wonderful."

Later that week, when Mom and Dad came home, my sister told them, "Give us a Christmas this spring.

They looked puzzled and tried to ask what she meant, but we didn't hear. '.Je were down on the floor, laughing.

5 -6 THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS It was the n i g h t before Christmas and all through the room, Nothing was moving, not even a broom.

I walked to the living room and what a surprise, Our presents were gone and I could have just died.

I ran to my p a r e n t s ’ room (I stepped on some lead) My m o t h e r just said, "Go back to bed."

I couldn't do that.

It w o u l d n ’t be right.

Maybe I'd vanish that very same night.

I looked around the living room.

I found a rat alive.

Santa Claus came in and started to jive.

He gave us our presents and let out a groan.

A f t e r that he returned to his wintery home.

SVfE U L T I M A T E HEADACHE One day, in the boiling hot summer, I went swimming with my friend Marc when something horrible happened.

I walked , into the pool and slipped.

I fell back and hit my head. (/(/ ^ Marc called his m o m and asked her to take us to the hospital While we were waiting for his mom to come, Marc was teasing me by saying things like I would probably get a butterfly bandage or stitches which really hurt. That made me feel ‘great!

Finally his mom came and picked us up.

We hastened to the hospital where we waited for long, frustrating hours to go into an examination room.

My m o m came just after I went in.

I was really happy to see her.

After a long wait, the doctor came.

He sewed the stitches in; I couldn't really feel them.

I went home and I was happy it was over.

£ ZIPPER One day when my m o m got home from taking me to school, she went out to feed the dog, but when she got there the dog was gone.

The dog had been tied up to the pole with her leash.

The leash had been snipped.

My mom had told me the bad news, so we decided to put up a sign saying "lost dog", and "reward" was written right by it.

My dad had described the dog as a female black lab named Zipper.

Right away, we went and checked all the pounds and the neighborhood.

VJe waited a long time and n e v e r did get her back.

I never had a dog n i c e r than Zipper. ^

5 -7 THE CHEMI'-THING Tom and Debbie were thrilled with the chemistry set their parents had given them.

They spent the entire rainy afternoon m i x i n g different colored liquids together.

"I'm tired," said Tom. Debbie agreed.

That instant their m o ther called them for dinner.

At dinner, Mother and Father were talking about the gale that was supposed to hit the city sometime that week.

Just then the lights started to sway to and fro.

Tom remembered that he hadn't closed the w i n d o w where he and Debbie kept their chemicals.

All of a sudden, Tom and Debbie heard a crash and then a fizzle in the lab.

Tom went into the l a b to see what had happened.

On the floor lay a bubbling puddle of acids, chlorides, stains, and a shattered bottle of sulphuric acid.

The puddle started to move as if it were alive.

As it m oved along, it left a blue stained trench from the acids and the stains.

It started to slither up the stairs.

When it was all the way up the stairs, it turned left to the balcony.

At the balcony, it stopped long enough to burn a hole through the floor and then fall to the street below.

It slithered to the d r u g s t o r e at the corner of the street and burned down the door.

Tom and Debbie rushed to follow the thing.

Inside the store, the puddle was consuming all the chemicals.

As it did • so, it got bigger.

Debbie noti c e d that the puddle didn't touch the soap area.

Next they followed it to a chemical store where the object ate everything except the soap.

Soon the puddle turned into a blob so large it couldn't move through the door.

Tom and Debbie wondered why the blob didn't go n e a r t soap.

Tom was determined to find out.

He told Debbie to gather up a bit of soap, walk around to the other side of the building, and wait for it to come.

After it would come around the building, she was told to throw some of the soap on it.

She did what he told her and after it was a c c o m p l i s h ­ ed, the blob shrank down in size a little.

Debbie was excited and went to tell Tom what had happened.

Tom had another brainstorm.

He took all of the soap he could find and followed the blob.

He followed the blob to Atal's D r u g store and hurried in.

Tom and Debbie worked quickly to change the chemicals with the soaps.

Then they hid.

The blob came into the store in no time at all and started to m unch on the switched chemicals.

It started to grow smaller and smaller and smaller until it was finally gone.

Tom and Debbie gave a big sigh of relief.

They ran home

5-8 HAUNTED HOUSE "I think we've been on almost every ride," Donna said, m u n c h i n g on popcorn.

"We haven't gone into the Haunted House yet," said Dan. "we have just enough tickets left."

"Dan, look at those people coming out of the Haunted House.

T h e y ’re shaking and they look as white as ghosts I" "Boy, that must be some ride! Come on, Donna, let's go!"

They paid for their tickets and went in.

"Boy, it's very dark in here.

Right, Donna? Donna!"

"Here I am.

Look at this!

There is a passage over here.

Let's g o ! " They slid down a slide and landed in a maze of mirrors.

Suddenly there was a clap of thunder.

The maze of^mirrors turned into a round room wi t h one exit.

Blood stains and deep scratches (perhaps made by an axe) marr e d the walls.

A n a s t y - l o o k i n g troll br a ndishing its bloody axe blocked the only way out of the room.

A sword left from a previous battle lay in the corner of the room."Get the^sword," said Dan. "I got it!" said D o n n a .

"Throw it at the troll!" yelled Dan. The sword stuck deep into the troll.

As soon aS he breathed his last, a cloud of sinister black smoke enveloped his carcass.

As soon as the black smoke cleared, his carcass had disappeared.

Suddenly they could hear the carnival sounds outside.

Then they found themselves outside the Haunted House.

After that Dan and Donna n ever went into a Haunted House again.

COIN! The guard had announced closing time, but Linda wanted to take a last look at the strange mummy they had seen in a dusty

"Everyone has gone. Vie're "Hurry up, Linda," said Eric, the last ones here."

"The mummy ... it moved!"

"Let's get out of here," he shouted.

"Oh, no!" she cried, trying the door.

"We're locked in'."

The mummy sat up, broke the glass encasement, and got up.

He started searching for an article of some sort.

Eric and Linda ran.

As they ran, Eric kicked something.

"What was that?" Eric exclaimed.

"Wait a minute," Linda paused.

"I have my penlight.

We can search for whatever that was."

She turned it on.

A bright beam shot out and something golden reflected the light as she m oved the beam.

Eric picked it up and they inspected it.

It was a gold coin.

The mummy ran toward them, saying, "Coin, coin, give me the c o i n ! " Eric and Linda gave it to him and followed him to his case.

Before he settled back in, he put the coin in an idol, where it was supposed to be.

Then he got in, and magically the glass r e p l a c e d ^ i t s e l f .

HALLOWEEN It was Halloween and Mike and I were at a party in an abandoned warehouse at the edge of town near the old graveyard.

The party was really wild.

People were slam dancing, smoking joints and weed, and drinking beer.

It was around two in the m o r n i n g when cops broke through the front door. It was a raid, but I was by the back door so I slipped out into the graveyard and ran.

I heard, coming from behind me, "Freeze or I'll shoot," but I kept on running into the darkness until I was out of sight.

I saw lights coming from behind me.

I started to sprint.

The lights were gaining on me.

I was really freaked.

It was dark and foggy and cops were on my tail.

I leaped behind a tombstone and waited.

I heard -the men's feet cracking little twigs and they went by, not noticing me.

I peeked over the top of the tombstone and there was a gun, right in my face.

I guess they had noticed me.

They handcuffed me and took me to the station.

They charged me for resisting arrest and for drinking alcohol under age and for using drugs.

A fter the Traveller had been finished, the crew of twenty was ready.

It was stardate 2 1 : 5 0 s20, and our ship was on the take off pad.

After we were in space, a black hole known as Contorio Binlinkery was unveiled on our scanner.

Suddenly a m e s sage came from the engine room. .Je were losing speed rapidly and being sucked into the black hole.

Promptly the crew was unconscious.

After we woke up, we found ourselves in the strangest universe we had ever After deciding to beam down to a small red planet, we found that our engines weren't any good, and we could only run on auxiliary power. , Kinl and I then transferred down and found oursel/es n e x t to a weird looking bear, who immediately stamped the life out of Kinl and came run n i n g for me.

I ran as fast as I could, but the r e p u lsive beast overtook me.

I called the ship for a beam up, and just as the beast was about to pounce on m e , I d e m a t e n a l i z e d and materialized on board my ship.

Vre decided to warp over to a small star cluster.

On the way over, we hit a m e t e o r storm.

THE MUMMY The guard had announced closing time, but Linda wanted to take a last look at the strange mummy they had seen in a dusty corner of the museum.

"Hurry up, Linda," said Eric. "Everyone has gone. We're the last ones hereo" "Eric!" gasped Linda. "The mummy....it moved!"

"Let's get out of here," he shouted.

"Oh, no," she cried, trying the door. "We're locked in!"

The mummy raised its arm and broke the glass.

"It's alive!" cried Linda.

"Let's try the window," said Eric.

The mummy sat up, thrashing the glass. Some glass flew and cut Linda's face. The mummy was still kicking at the glass.

Finally he got out. The mummy started after them.

"He's got me," yelled Linda.

The mummy took Linda and threw her against the wall.

He did it again and again until she was dead.

"Linda!" Eric cried.

Eric ran as fast as he could. There was a telephone down the hall, if he could just make it.

He ran and grabbed the phone and dialed the police. "Hello, police, come to the museum on Fare Street," he cried. The phone went dead.

He turned around.- The mummy had ripped the phone out of the wall!

He ran to the door and waited.

It was being kicked open. "The police!" he yelled.

"Yes, son," the policeman said.

"What's the matter," another one said. Then they saw the mummy.

"Oh, my gosh!" he said, "Get the guns!" Two of them got guns and shot continuously.

"He won't die," they said. Then they brought in a machine gun.

Suddenly the mummy slammed backwards. He was dead.

S IX TH GRADE CLASS HISTORY

Nursery School - Gem, Bell, Blythe, Tom and Karen were there, but more were soon to come.

Gem and Bell had fun sitting in the growing up chair, all the time.

Ki ndergarten - In Kindergarten Tina came. Stephanie would never talk in class so her mother had to come often. Justin went to the bathroom in the bushes and got caught by Miss Root.

Fi rst Grade - Chris and Lindsay joined us in first grade.

Stephanie kicked the fire extinguisher down. Gem and Bell broke Miss Root's favorite plant. Miguel and Bell couldn't stand each other.

Second Grade - We performed the^Sound of MusicV Gem and Tom always fought with Michael, so Michael always stood by Miss Schwarz at recess.

Kathryn wore a pretty dress the first day of school.

Thi rd Grade - We acted in a play about Westward Movement. We memorized the presidents and had the Bake Sale and the Craft and Hobby Show.

Blythe got up during the class and kissed Michele.

Blythe also danced around the room with a red ribbon. Gem and Justin fought often.

Clark and Amanda were new.

Fourth Grade - Michelle came. Verena smashed her finger in the door and Greg fell off a chair and chipped a tooth.

(Andy left at the end of fourth grade.) At Inverness the girls went outside to see the boys.

Lindsay got stuck outside and had to hide around the corner when Mrs. Landreth came.

Fi fth Grade - Tara and Sara came. Michele broke his collar bone, Amanda broke her arm, and Stephanie broke her finger. We had lectures "southern style." Mrs. Westmoreland would tap her chalk on the Study Hall list to get us to be quiet. We started the first Talent Show. At the end of the year we tore up all of our papers, put them on the ground^and slid on them. We went on strike to get less homework and longer recesses, but when threatened with losing P.E. time we resumed our class work.

Si nth Grade - At Yosemite, Blythe and Tara got sick. Amanda broke her finger, Verena was stung by bees, and the boys met high school girls from L.A. The 6th grade girls were jealous.

Also, at Yosemite, the teachers nailed the door shut between the boys and girls dorm. We went to the Vatican Collection and the Grant Wood Exhibit. We performed A Chri stmas Carol. We created plastic plates with the whole school. The musical with the paintings that came to life was fun to work on.

MY UNCLE PAOLO My uncle Paolo, who lives in Italy, is a nut. He owns a speedboat, which you should never go on because you will spend more time in the air than on the water and he drives like Mario Andretti.

He used to be a moto-cross racer. He fits in well with the rest of my dad's family; my other uncle, had been on the Italian Olympic fencing team and my dad was the captain of the official Italian team for speed boat racing.

In this race a skier is pulled behind the boat. They won the European champ ionsh ip .

Uncle Paolo won the Northern Italian Moto-Cross Championship twice and then hung his bars on the wall when he brutally broke his leg. He is very tall and has a mustache.

He has brownish-blackish hair, what's left of it, as he is turning bald, which he won't admit.

He also has a great sense of humor.

1 have always idolized him for his guts and his crazyness.

I will always remember him as "my uncle the nut."

Since she hated her dad and younger brother, she went to her loving mother to ask her if she could take ballet classes to get away from them.

Her mother thought that it was a splendid idea.

A week later she was taking ballet classes from Mrs. Whitson and thought that she would be an excellent teacher.

Soon after Marguerite started the lessons, she was in a carriage accident.

It was very tragic.

She was riding with her mother, going south.

All of a sudden another carriage came racing towards them.

It was heading north. BOOM! ! Everything in Marguerite's mind went blank.

Her mother managed to get out of the carriage all right, but Marguerite didn't.

Her mother picked her up and ran home. The doctor at the castle said that she would never be able to dance again. Marguerite was in tears.

Her mother tried to comfort her.

Marguerite tried to focus on everything but her injury.

The shell on the chest in front of her bed meant a lot to her.Ad soon as she picked it up, her leg felt normal. She tried walking and found that there was nothing wrong with her leg. She was so overjoyed that she ran to her mother. W h e n she got to her mother, she put the shell down.

Her leg felt terrible.

The shell must be magic, they thought. In fact,it was. Marguerite's family was very, very happy.

Now that Marguerite was well she could dance, as long as she held the shell.

Everything turned out just like the beginning.

TENNIS

On a hot and boring summer day about three years ago, my mom said, "Greg, you've got to do something!

I think I'll sign you up for tennis lessons." ,. . , I didn't like the idea but I didn't have anything else to do, so the next day I went to a lesson.

I was put in a group tennis lesson with other beginners. The teacher, Chris Bradley, was a nice and a very good teacher.

First Chris tossed balls to me to hit back.

It was weird; well, I mean it was fun, but it was hard to get the ball in the court.

I liked it a lot so I played tennis against the backboard all day long.

After a week of playing right-handed, Chris said to throw a tennis right-handed and then throw a ball left-handed. The ball in the left hand went further, so from then on I played left-handed.

Every day I took the lessons for two hours.

I either played against the backboard or my mom would toss balls to me.

After about a month, I tried out for the club team and made it.

Tennis has changed my life.

It has given me something fun to do.

It also lets me meet other people. That early practice has paid off because now I am working for state ranking.

Christina's World Christina was lying in the paddock, her paralyzed legs crumpled under her. Her bony hand, jointed to a skeleton-like arm, stretched out towards a deserted farmhouse.

One thing wentthrough her mind: "Move legs!" she cried out desperately, in a silent world.

Her brain was pounding with these words and consequently her whole head ached.

Her hair fluttered into her face,^ but somehow she just couldn't shake it away.

Christina opened her mouth to yell, but no sound came. "Help!

Help me! she cried soundlessly.

Christina reflected back to a few hours ago when Rick had taken her out for a walk.

They had stopped at a field to rest.

Happily, she talked to Rick by sign language for she was mute. Sitting in her wheel chair, she was lulled to sleep by the wind.

Wak­ ing up was frightening since Rick had disappeared.

He was nowhere in sight.

Tears streamed from her eyes as she remembered this.

Rick had been her best f r i e n d ...until now.

It started to rain, first lightly then harder and harder.

Trembling, she lay in the mud. Christina felt very weak and she couldn't hold on.

Very soon she breathed her last and went limp.

Soon after her death, lights shone on the corpse.

Someone cried, "Here she is!"

October 13 As I looked at Half Dome, It made me think of this poem.

11 1ooked 1ike homes For a million gnomes.

The sun's ray Made me feel gay.

The trees were tall And the animals small.

The air was cold, The trees had mold.

The birds were singing, As the bees were stinging.

Half Dome Half Dome is a spectacular mountain carved by a glacier.

It has a perfect shape of a dome, but split in half. Half Dome is all gray granite.

It is so enormous on top there's room for five football fields.

In the winter Half Dome is covered with snow and ice. At this time of year Half Dome isn't covered with snow, but it's just as amazing.

Spider Caves of Yosemite When we went into the Spider Caves that morning nobody was expecting an easy hike and a good laugh.

When we started through everyone made it to the first dark room without a scratch.

Then we headed to the passage that we would have to go to inorder to get into the second dark room.

When we were going through the beginning of the passage we found ourselves crawling on our stomachs. The passage could have been compared to midnight, it was so dark.

When most of us went through we heard a shriek from Tina and a cry from our leader, Mary.

Earlier she had told us there was a six foot drop, but there really was a three foot drop into sand.

They were all faking and we got a good laugh.

Now I remember that excursion as the funniest part of the week.

Oh, there are so many wild animals.

Sierra Nevada is where it is located.

Every bird was chirping loudly by 8:00 a.m.

Many people love Yosemite.

I love Yosemite myself.

Even the teachers had a good time!

Chip "It's time for you to go to swimming school, Chip," called Mrs. Squirrel.

"Oh boy!" cried Chip, a two year old bushy, red squirrel. "My first day of swimming school! I'll actually know how to swim!"

"Don't forget your towel, dear," reminded Mrs. Squirrel.

"Can I bring my new orange one?" asked Chip.

"Certainly," replied Chip's mother.

"Oh goody,oh goody, oh goody!" yelled Chip.

"You'd better go noV. It's getting late!" said Mrs. Squirrel.

"Here I am swimming teacher!" exclaimed Chip, e x c i t ­ edly. "Look at all those ducks, birds, seals, and otters," he said to himself."Not a squirrel in sight!"

"You're a...a...well you're a... u h ... a ... s q u i r r e l ?" questioned the swimming teacher, a beautiful mother swan, named Mary.

"Of course," replied Chip, irritated.

"Well, yes, how silly of me, of course you're a squirrel, of course, of course, of course," stated Mary, m u t t ering the last words down to a whisper.

"My name is Chip," he m e n t i o n e d ."What are your names?'

All the other animals responded in turn* "My name is Feather. My name is Cherub. My name is Poppy. My name is Muffy. My name is Kathie. My name is K a i . My name is F l i p p e r ."

"Nice to meet you," said Chip.

"All right, time to start swimming!" screamed Mary."

Everyone in the water!"

"I'm sinking!" shrieked Chip.

"Paddle your arms!" screeched Mary.

"I can't!" yelled Chip frantically. "It doesn't h e l p !"

"Oh dear. Get out of the water," advised Mary.

"I won't ever be able to swim," stated Chip, crying.

"Where's Chip?" inquired the other animals.

"He went home," replied Mary.

Moral:

Never try to teach squirrels to swim.

The Old Man Praying The old man is seated in a pew leaning on his Bible.

His tired eyes are half closed and the wrinkles around them are cut so d eeply they seem like slashes of endurance, toil, and hardship over the years he has faced.

His grey hair is whipped back like a wild man's. He wears a sizable amber coat, which makes his hands and head look diminutive.

Clasped together, his callused hands pointed to the heavens where God Himself might listen to the puzzles of an aged, fatigued man.

THE BICYCLE RIDE Last summer, my sister rode her bicycle to the library. She was carrying a drawstring bag with long strings to hold the books. After she had been gone for about half an hour, the telephone's loud ring filled the Quiet house, and my mother jumped nearly ten feet in the air. When my mother answered the phone after five rings, a lady told her that my sister had fallen off her bicycle and was bleeding badly, so could we please come and get her.

My nerve-wracked mother and I went to pick her up, crying, from the roadside.

I rode her bent bicycle home and nearly fell off myself.

When I got home, my sister was still crying, and her lip was bleeding.

She had also chipped her front tooth and the tooth is now crooked. My sister told my mother that she had fallen because the bag strings had gotten caught between the spokes of her bicycle.

She has now learned never to carry a bag with long handles or strings, and to always wear her helmet. She is also cautious about crossing streets because.......................

Well, that's another story.

THE HIKE Last ^summer I was hiking in Sequoia National Park with the Boy Scouts.

On the third day of hiking, we had to climb up a 6,000 foot chute, almost straight up. The land where we were was very barren, and in the bottom of this great rock canyon was a shimmering lake. While we were scaling the chute, we had thirty-five pounds in our backpacks and very painful blisters on our feet. As we were climbing up, I was very scared because I thought I wou d fall and die. When I was almost to the top, somebody loosened a boulder and it came crashing down directly towards me.

I quickly jumped out of the way, but the boulder bounced over to me and missed my head by a foot.

The second I reached the top, I experienced a terrific feeling.

It was a feeling of achievement that I had overcome the hardest and most terrifyinq moment of my 1ife. y a John Guzy

The Classroom The classroom is dark and silent in the morning, but when the teacher opens the door the class gets noisy and messy.

The shelves become trashed by k i d s s t u f f i n g Y lunches, shoes, and all kinds of junk on them.

After a while the room sm.ells like tar.

The roof has holes there are missing tiles.

The windows are covered with dirt.

The floor is splattered with mud.

Paper notes are thrown everywhere.

An old beat-up Christmas tree and scenery are jammed in the corner of the room near e front door.

The dusty old books on the shelves are thrown m there like waste in a garbage can.

"But Mom!" "No buts, you're grounded for the weekend. If you want to take it up with your father, go right ahead!" she exclaimed furiously.

"I hate you, Mom!" I screamed as I ran upstairs.

"Good bye,Martha," said my mom as 'she hung up the phone.

"Justin, come down here right now, or you're grounded for a month."

"What do you want?"

"I want you to apoligize!"

"Why should I? 1 demanded rudely.

"Because you owe me an apology."

"Do not!" I exclaimed.

"Do too!"

"Do not!" I screamed again.

"Justin, you're going to be grounded for a month, and if you don't like it you can be grounded for two."

Two Weeks Later "Mom, I'm late for my drum lesson," I whined.

"Oh stop whining and I'll take you."

"I am not whining!"

"Yes you are!"

Close Call

As I tied my mangled leg with my scarf so the blood wouldn't pour out of my wound, I was unabble to walk, so I laid myself down against an enormous tree with my old partly rusted six shooter, which only had four bullets left.

As I rested there on this hot humid day, I heard a loud screeching roar.

Alertly I peered around and on a tree, staring with red beady eyes, a...

I'd say about a 250 lb,black panther crouched, ready to leap and then charge.

I was scared out of my wits.

Frozen solid, I stayed there, not knowing what to do next when the panther soared down from the bent tree to approach me.

Suddenly I picked up my gun and shot.

The bullet hit him in the paw and blood spurted out in all directions.

I shot again, this time in the neck.

Blood was pouring out.

I could tell he was in pain when he s c r e a m e d ,blood came rumbling out of his mouth.

I thought it was no use.

I shot again, this time in the heart.

He crawled up to me and just collapsed, spurting warm thick blood all over me.

An Unlucky Sail Looking out the window of his old toolshed, Mark saw the bay from which the wind was blowing the mutilated curtains.

He was thinking it would be a good day for sailing.

"Hey, Jerry," he called on the phone, "how would you like sailing with me this morning?"

"I think I could. I don't have anything else to do today."

"Great!

Come over now. Bye!" Then they were off in their sailboat, but they noticed something. "Boy, surely is getting windy out here," sighed Jerry worriedly.

"I noticed that too," muttered Mark. Suddenly, the wind became too strong. The tiny vessel was blown off course.

"We'll have to lower the sail. Otherwise we'll be blown too far away!" shouted Mark nervously."I only have oars, so we'll have to wait till the wind dies down."

The howling wind never died down that.day, so the two men slept in the cabin that night. The only food they had was two cokes and two ham sandwiches.

The next day the terrible wind stopped. "Did you have a nice rest?" Mark asked curiously.

"Not really. The boat was knocking around too m u c h ."

"Hopefully someone will pick us up, sooner or later, "Mark stated.

"Preferably sooner," Jerry replied. "Let's eat a little bit of our sandwiches to start the day off."

"Okay, but we'll have to sail back some. We've drifted a long time."

So they started sailing.

"I'm going to check the weather the next time I go sailing," Mark said.

"Can we stop and rest a little bit?" Jerry questioned.

"I guess we can," Mark answered.

After a while they heard something. "Do you hear something? It sounds like a helicopter," Mark called.

"Hey! it's the Coast Guard!" Jerry shouted.

"Hey! Over here!" they yelled in unison.

The helicopter hovered over them and picked them up.

Mark would think again the next time he went sailing.

Chris Martinez Bakery As the lights dimly came on in the bakery at about 6:00, the old, stone bricks of the building glowed like gold. Wonderful smells drifted out of the door and dragged people into the store to buy the soft, plump bread.

As we bought some of the scrumptious bread, our m o u t h s ’w a t e r e d . When the manager handed us our bread, we nibbled at it slowly.

After we ambled out of the store, the lights dimmed until they were out.

It was noon and the sixth grade buzzed with the low murmur of twenty three kids whispering and passing notes. Mrs. Altrocchi was giving an elongated lecture on the parts of speech.

Every person in the room, besides the teachers, were propped up on their desks in abored way. "...The adjectives describe a noun or a pronoun..." Mrs. A. rambled on. While she turned around to write on the blackboard, Gem threw a note across the room to Michele.

Michele whispered, in a half screech, "No, she's not. 1 am."

At that moment Mrs. A. turned around. "Gem, what is an adverb?"

Gem stammered, " U h ,...A...an adverb is...uh...a word that describes a verb or an adjective."

"Good," answered Mrs. Altrocchi. "Now, Michele, give me a sentence with a good adverb in it." Startled Michele turned around with the note in his hand.

"Give me that note!" Mrs. A. ordered.

The class shouted, "Read it! Read it! Read it!" Mrs. Altrocchi paid no attention to them.

"No more note-passing or Study Hall!" Mrs. Docter commanded. Quietly everyone went back to Mrs. A's lecture. Suddenly, there came a peep from the back of the room.

"Peep!" Again it was heard, this time on the far side. Mrs. Altrocchi paid no attention to the noise.

"Bump, Bump, Bump!" An orange rolled across the floor to the grayish curtain.

Justin made motions for Tara to throw it back.

Just as Tara reached down to get it, Mrs. Altrocchi exclaimed, in a shocked voice,"Tara, what are you doing on the floor? Give me that orange!" Sheepishly, Tara walked up and gave her the orange.

"Tara, can you name all the parts of speech?"

"Uh...urn...no."

"Of course not. I haven't told you them yet. You weren't listening." Finally, with the ring of the bell, came twenty-three ''hoorays".

Mrs. A. said as a final statement, " y o u r h o mework will be ori t h e board.

It was of no use,everyone had gone outside. Wearily, the teachers walked out.

Tina Koo A Good Friend A person who has really been a great friend is John He has helped me through a lot of problems.

I have gone over to his house a lot.

We did things together.

He would show me forts, hiding places, and tell me all his secrets.

Now after I go to the ortho­ dontist, I go to his house.

After I learned h ow to swim, he encouraged me to keep trying different things.

He would show me new strokes and ways to swim.

We have known each other since Kindergarten.

He does things for me and I do things for him.

He is really a good kid.

I have always relied on John to be nice to me.

He can make me feel really good inside.

Puddles "Joey! Joey Louis! Joey Louis Peterson!" called Mrs. Peterson.

"Where are you? It's time to come in!"

"Here I am, Mommy!"

"Joey Louis! What on earth were you doing? How did you get so muddy?

"I was playing with Mr. Mud Puddle," said Joey enthusiastically.

"You bad, bad, bad boy! Go straight to the bathtub!" yelled Mrs. Peterson.

"Oh, Mother, it's not fair! You never make Kris, Diana, or Daina take baths when they're dirty!" yelled Joey back to his mother.

Without stopping, Joey ran upstairs to the bathroom to see how dirty he really was.

When he got there, Diana and Kris popped out of two cupboards and said,"Poor Joey has to take a bath because he was playing in a mud puddle."

Joey felt ashamed so he ran to his bedroom and was quite surprised when Daina popped out from under the bed and yelled at him,"Poor Joey was playing in a mud puddle and has to take a bath! Oh dear! He's going to cry."

Joey was going to cry, but suddenly stopped when he thought of an idea. He looked at the back of Daina'a neck and then the twins.

He cheerfully took a bath in no time at all.

He washed the back of his neck very, very well.

He dressed quickli and ran downstairs.

Luckily the twins an Daina were still upstairs.

He ran to the laundry room where his mother was doing the laundry.

He started to enter carefully so as not to scare her and ruin his idea.

"Mother, I have something to tell you. Something very i m p o r t a n t .

"Well, what is it? " Mother asked, still sounding quite mad.

"Well, Mother, Diana, Kris , and Daina, it's about them."

"What is it? she shouted.

"On the back of all their necks is a big brown dirt spot. Aren't you going to get mad at them for that?"

"Oh,my goodness! Diana, Kris, Daina, come here this second...Let me see your necks. Heavens! Go wash up right now."

Moral: Always check that it's not true with you before you accuse others!

Haunted House

I remember that night well, the night j was coaxed into going into a house. After dinner one Halloween night, i called up my friends and we were off. After trick-or-treating a few housejand putting shaving cream on somebody's car, we turned a dark corner and there in the fog was a huge, gloomy mansion.

I told my friends that 1 wasn't going in there,but they coax me into doing it with them. Then Mrs. Docter came up and she ended up coming with us.

I looked up and the moon was an eery glow in the night sky. When we opened the door it creaked, but we went in anyway.

Right in front of us was a coffin with a body that had a bullet in it and moving eyes in the picture on the wall. With that Mrs. Docter became freaked to the max. We told her to be quiet and we walked on. While we were walking in the hall, a scream like thunder shook the walls. We all said, "Who gives about some scream" and walked on, There was a door to the right that had a real skull on it. We dec ided to walk in. We were all quiet for awhile. Then Tom Excitedly he stuck his hand in.

In it was a thick, spotted a loose board. mass of green jel lo and Tom fell in it. He looked sick when he came out covered with jello. While we were groaning our "Oooos and Aahs" to Tom, Marc slipped on a wet sponge and fell through a trap door.

After a moment of silence, Marc told us to come down and we did slowly.

While ! was jumping off the bottom of the chute, I saw what 1 thought were Miss Root and Mrs. A., dead. Mrs. Docter went berserk and Tom started to rejoice. While 1 was telling them we didn't have much time, we walked out the door into a connecting room. Suddenly a poisoned dart came through the window and just missed Michelle. Then Justin, Marc, and I saw another trap door and crawled into it without the others noticing us. There in front of us was a creepy skeleton. Justin then slipped and fell into the skeleton and was freaked.

Soon he was up and we came into a room full of coffins.

Marc opened one and was instantly scared.

He backed up into me and a light turned on.

It was Mrs. Docter, Michelle, and Tom. We decided to close the coffin so they wouldn't be freaked. Then Mrs. Docter came down and opened a nearby door. Down she fell, into a room filled with Black Mambas. Her scream was as loud as a baby's yell. Not wanting to see the gruesome scene, we staggered away.

The next room led into a graveyard and there were many graves. Tom looked at one and it said "Michel1e W i 1bur, 1972-1983". When Tom told her that she said it was on 1y a joke and we left. While we were walking across the endless cemetery, Tom fell into a pit with tons of scorpions in it. We saw him get bi tten and 1eft.

Soon after that, we saw a door and went in, there was a 1ady. S he said, Then Marc asked, "Was that a joke?" 'c ' 'n"r candy" and we were stunned "Here's your -'r'A we left.

She said, "II cannot answer that question,"" and After trick-or-treating a few more houses and putt ing shavi ng cream on more cars, we went to Michelle's house. There we divided the little candy In the morning we had all forgotten our adventure, we had and went to s 1eep. and we went home!

THE GHOST WHO HAUNTS THE SHORES

"Uncle Gerard, tell us about Catherine Ha 11erwoods!" little Tommy demanded.

Uncle Gerard had been an old sailor. He had sailed all the seas and lived to tell about it. At that moment he was sitting by a window with billowing, white curtains, gazing out over the sea. The Camermons lived on the seashore, a little way from the village.

"But I've told you about her a thousand times!"

"We want to hear it again," whined Annie, Tommy's younger sister.

"Oh, all right.

But just this last time, you hear?" The children let out a big cheer. "Hush down or your ma will hear."

"Well, Catherine Hallerwoods was a very pretty young lady who lived in this very house.

Life, would've been nice for her, too, if she hadn't had a twin sister. Her name was Katherine.

Katherine and Catherine were really close.

Katherine had a guick mind and a sharp tongue.

Catherine wasn't as smart but was very good at sports.

Katherine respected Catherine.

Catherine worshipped Katherine.

Then one night, a fire broke out in the old Victorian house. The flames leaped out the windows. The fire must have started upstairs because, in no time, the terrified girls were trapped.

Unfortunately, Katherine's face got burned and Catherine's leg was smashed by a falling beam.

But Katherine dragged Catherine out before she got killed and they both survived.

From then on, Katherine was jealous of Catherine's good looks and Catherine was jealous because Katherine could run. Every other day they would argue. They always picked on each other.

One day their mother talked to them. Together they voiced their thoughts.

Catherine grew angry and wheeled out of the house. An hour later, she burst into the house declaring she would never see another human being in her entire life.

Katherine, on the other hand, saw that unless she took a more positive outlook on life, she would not get anywhere.

Years later, Katherine's charming manner had everyone admiring her.

Nobody even noticed her face now.

On the contrary, in this cottage, Catherine lived her lonely, miserable life. Many timesCat herine would sit and look out this very window, thinking of the times she could run with the wind on the beach.

Lots of times she considered going back to civilization, but then she would remember her vow to keep away from mankind.

Their lives were very different, even though they still thought of each other a lot."

"Then what happened?" inguired Tommy.

"Catherine killed herself, seated at this very window.

In a letter to Katherine, she wrote she hoped to have a better life after she was reincarnated.

Poor Catherine's soul must've been so troubled when she killed herself, because her ghost still haunts this house!"

The children sat on the floor silently. Annie shivered,"Have you ever seen Catherine's ghost?"

"No, Annie," chuckled Uncle Gerard.

"So far, only a few pepple

Life wasn't fair.

It just wasn't fair. The divorce, she thought.

A world where everything was perfect.

She turned into a ravishing princess.

Her bed was her boat.

And the wind was blowing in through the open window.

Why, she could almost taste the salty sea air.

Pirates, she thought.

No! Mermaids! And she dreamt.

Then the dreams focused on her real world.

She was the mermaid.

But not like those she had imagined.

A homely girl with stringy hair, freckles, and big, chunky glasses.

Carolyn, Pa's new wife, was the raving beauty this time, not Janet.

There she was, ordering her stepdaughter around for changing the sheets, dusting the doorknobs, and doing other unnecessary tasks such as those.

"Janet! Janet!" Carolyn's raspy voice brought her out of her fantasies. Out of the window she gazed, through the lacy curtains that her mother had made for her.

All of a sudden,a twinge of homesickness crept through her. She was in the same house, but Carolyn was much different from her real mom. Treating her like a servant indeed! Suddenly Janet started sobbing.

"Mommy! Oh, my little Mommy. Come back! Come back to me!! " She hadn't noticed that Carolyn had come into the room.

"Dearie, I heard what you were crying.

CORNICE JUMPING Last year I was on the Squaw Valley Ski Team. One day, after a big snow storm we went cornice jumping.

I never had jumped big cornices before. At first I jumped little cornices. Then everyone went up the "National Chutes." Although Squaw Valley has many steep and hard runs, these chutes were the steepest. To add to the fear, these chutes had twenty-foot cornices. While we went up to Headwa11 chairlift, I was so nervous. We got off the chair and took off our skis. Putting them on our shoulders, we started hiking up to the chutes. The hike was hard and took a while, but we finally got to the top.

It was really windy up on top of the chutes.

I was so freaked-out0 Everyone was ready to go, but I was still thinking about it. They all were saying, "Go Gem, it's easy!"

I didn't want to, because the only way down was a twenty or more foot cornice.

Everyone was starting to leave, and all of a sudden I found myself twenty feet in the air.

I landed and skied the rest of the way down the chute.

I was shaking, but I wanted to do it again. All my friends were down there waiting for me.

From that day on, I have not been scared of heights.

A t tack of the Unknown Creature In the lab of Dr. Von Z o r c h o v e , he was perfecting his new invention.

"Ralff," called Dr. Z o r c h o v e ."Where is that numb-skull when you need him?"

"Here I am, Master, over here!" shouted Ralff.

"Come over and let's get under way. We have some important work to do," said Dr. Zorchove.

"Hurry up, Han. We have to go to the professor's lab and see his thing, beast, or whatever you want to call it," exclaimed Ruth.

"I'm goin' as fast as I can, Ruth," said Han. The doctor had finished the thing five minutes after the two reporters got there.

It was a seven foot burly beast.

It looked like a human.

Ralff showed them to their room.

The dark and gloomy hallway was scary for Ruth, but Han was brave.

Ruth's room was first, but she insisted on going to Han's room with him.

His was as dark as the hallway.

But she found out that his room was right next to hers.

They found a candle and lit it.

The room was full of animal heads, swords, and guns. Her room was just as fascinating.

Just then she heard a holler.

She waited a while and heard footsteps.

They went by her room.

They stopped.

The door slowly opened.

Then came in the creature.

It was more horrifying now than it had looked asleep.

She ditched it by outsmarting it and locking the door. Han was strangled to death.

She broke the glass case that held the guns.

She took out a loaded musket and shot the creature. She then shot him four more times in the chest with a Colt 44. He kept coming towards her. She got all the guns in a pillow case and shot out of the room like crazy. The creature didn't know what had happened. Ruth found some string so she tied the string to the triggers of the guns.

She hid in a room and slammed another room's door where the guns were rigged.

The beast went to that room.

Then he was blown to dust.

How Embarrassing! (t was a lesson [ learned in Yosemite that always reminds me to hold my sweat pants up when I wear them around When the fifth and sixth grade classes were in Yosemite, we had three people to each tiny cabin.

Kathryn, Stephanie, and I were just getting back from the showers and it was freezing! We fumbled for our keys, opened the door, and pulled down the shades so we could get dressed.

It was almost time for dinner, so I was just jumping into my sweat suit when there was a knock at the door. At this time the shades were up again and the windows slightly ajar.

I opened up the door and _____________was there; then I heard someoneat the window and turned around.

The next thing I heard was laughing and Kathryn 's shriek,"Pull up your pants!" Boys were at the window and boys were at the door! We finally got ___________ and his friends out of the cabin. My face was burning red.

Later that night, we were talking about it in the bathrooms, and then all of a sudden I heard Mrs. Docter's voice, "A little embarrassing,mmm?" and she laughed.

On July 6,1483, Richard III was crowned king of England.

In London there was a great parade to the church.

Richard, who had lived at M i d d leham Castle, was to be crowned king. When I went to Middleham this summer, I saw the parade and festivities reenacted.

All week there were festivities, plays (one of them was called G a r g a n t u a ) , games, and children dressed in medieval costumes.

Men dressed as knights fought with maces and/or swords. Minstrels ' ' A played on lutes and longhorns, jesters acted. One jester twirled a baton with fire at each end, and instead of twirling it with his hands, he controlled it with two sticks.

On the sixth the parade came from the castle to the church.

I took many pictures then.

After they entered the church, I waited a long time for them to come out.

These festivities took place in Middleham because the castle was Richard's favorite. I hope that five-hundred years from now, people will celebrate his one thousandth anniversary.

Richard HI. was the last Yorkist king who had done a great deal for the people of the North.

Five hundred years later the descendents of those people made a gesture of loyalty and gratitude to the "Lord of the N o r t h ."

Tom Isenberg Kit Kat I shall never forget the day I met my death and the ghosts of Halloween.

I had been lying in a hospital bed for almost a year after eating a Kit Kat that had been injected with poison.

I couldn't wait to die, for the pain that filled my body like hundreds of bee stings was so intense that I was left moaning and sobbing 1ike a heartbroken ghost, which was just what I was going to be. My dear mother flew dramatically into my room on Halloween crying, "Sheila, honey, I want to say goodbye now. We all love you." My tears flowed down,great floods on my face.

I held my hand out to her. Just before our hands touched, I felt everything give way, my tears, my pain, and most important, my life.

I felt an arm, as cold as as icicle, slip around my body.

Heaviness was taken away and I found myself enveloped in a light, cool substance.

1 felt myself floating, a feather in the breeze.

I floated up to a fluffy black cloud and stopped. All around, translucent figures, their bodies surrounded by chalky mists, laughed gloomily.

As l watched their bloodless faces, I realized that I was now a ghost of Halloween.

After-life is misery. Nothing is appealing to me.

I drag myself through the days while thinking of my life as a human. I miss and cherish my old life, but because of that Kit Kat, I'll never really live in contentment again.

Beyond the Two Doors Christine Cortina didn't know what lay beyond the two doors, for her father had forbidden her to open them. Her father, Gregory Cortina, was a strange man; he idolized power, wealth, and greed.

He was a possessor of each one.

They lived alone, except for three servants and occasionally some guests, on the Isla de Vinta. Christine had tutors instead of going to boarding school, because her father didn't want her to go to the evil mainland.

Christine had decided that tonoght would be the night to find out what lay beyond the d o o r s . That very morning she was looking in her mother's old room and she found two keys.

She was positive they opened the doors.

That night t dinner, Christine could not believe how slowly time passed. There were no visitors at this time of the year, so they ate in complete silence. Finally dinner ended and Christine went up to her room.

She lay in bed for what seemed like hours,but in reality, was only thirty minutes. Silence. Quietly she got up and crept into the hall.

She lit a lantern she had stashed outside her door. Bursting with anticipation, she reached the doors.

One was slightly ajar. Christine hesitated with her hand upon the knob and then quickly she pushed it open.

She lifted the lantern to see betterand the room was empty! She crept out, advancing toward the other door.

She took out the keys, took one, and lightly pushed it in. Christine pushed with all her weight on to the door; she stumbled in.

Gasping, she saw pictures of her mother, pictures of her riding, pictures of her with father, pictures of her laughing, of her father smiling, of her mother pregnant. Christine had never met her mother; she had died when her daughter was born, Christine began to cry; she sobbed with huge tears.

The door opened silently and her father put his arms around her. He had never hugged her before.

They hugged each other and cried.

The Horse At five o'clock 1 took a quiet stroll in the woods, at least, 1 thought it would be quiet. After I sauntered past Boodle Lake, I glanced at a large chestnut horse thrashing wildly.

Suddenly, he raced toward me, and I quickly scampered up the nearest tree.

For a moment, the horse was silent and 1 crawled out onto a branch to see why. Abruptly, the branch snapped, and 1 dropped right in front of the horse. Then the horse backed up, and charged straight at me.

1 didn't do anything.

I just sat there, paralyzed with fear. The horse kept galloping toward me. Then he tripped over a rock and landed on his side saving me.
