THE
EARTH
INVADERS
Tom was driving and he saw a flying saucer. Tom drove home as fast as he could and told his mother. She did not believe Tom. The next day his mother drove to school and dropped Tom off. Tom's mother saw the flying saucer also. The space people were inside and they did not like the planet so they went home. Shane Koo
Hi!! I am a space invader. I live on the planet Invader with my friends. My friends help me invade planets. We have a spaceship It is red. Today we will invade the Math Planet. The houses are made of numbers. We landed safely and I found out that we forgot the map. Someone said, "Let's go get the map." "No", I said. "Today will be the day." I said to ten invaders that they must go west. Then I told the rest that they should come with me. My group had to cross the river and we did. I will tell you how. We started to swim across. We started to go down the river and we finally got to shore. We looked up at two signs. One sj.gn said that to the right was Math Town and the other sign said to go left for Town Town Math. We picked Math Town. We had to get across a gate. We did it. The guards saw us. We got into a bush. They came after us. I pointed my gun at them. They stopped running. I yelled, "We conquered it." Rebecca Caldwell
One day when I was riding my bike, I heard a noise. I stopped and looked up. At first I did not see anything. Then I saw two parachutes. All of a sudden I was looking at the Martian King. He stared at me for a minute and then he left forever. John Schneider
Once there was a stallion who always ran into Mr. Morgan's fields to see his mare. One day the Morgans went on an outing and Beta, the stallions owner, was riding him. He ran into his friend. Beta jumped off with her lunch and set a picnic blanket on the grass. Then she watched the horses playing together and eating grass. Katherine Robinson
One day at school I heard a noise. I looked up and I saw a flying saucer. It sent down a ladder. Down came two Martians. They looked weird. They came into our classroom and then they went outside to the playground. They could dribble a basketball so fast. And run with the football fast also. Then came the day when they went home. Every one said goodbye to them. The Martians went back to Mars. Just then it was recess and everyone went to play. Toby O'Reilly
One day some people named Jessica and Anna were walking down the sidewalk. They saw a house and walked right in without knocking. They came in and sat down. Then the owner came in and saw them, and then called the police. The police took them to jail. Jessica and Anna escaped. Nobody has ever seen them since. People are still looking.
One day I was playing at recess. I heard a very strange noise. It sounded so very weird. It was like a doorbell. It went, "DingDong". I looked up. It was a flying saucer. It dropped a big ladder. Ten Martians came out. They invaded Earth. One took my toys. A big one took m e . They took the whole house. They did this to every single house in the world. One day they went back. Scotty Jenstad

Once on another planet there was a family of Martians. There were two boys and three girls and a mother and a father. One day the little girl, whose name was Karen, said, "Mommy, when will we go to Earth?" "In one week", said her mother. Finally the day came. There was a lot of confusion. The family got into the spaceship. In about an hour, Tim asked his dad, "When will we get there?" "We are here right now!", said his dad. They looked around Earth and then they went home. Kim Hoekenga
It was springtime in Africa. A family of five were in a bar having a drink. All of a sudden a great big rabbit came in and tried to scare everyone, but he did not scare a person. One of the kids petted the rabbit. It's fur felt fake. Then the child ripped the rabbit suit off and the child called the cops. The cops came and put the man in jail. The kid got a lot of money because she was so helpful. Tolly Jones
One day some invaders came to Phillips Brooks School. They went into the Second Grade classroom. All the girls screamed and stood on their desks. The boys were making funny faces. Mr. Brackett said, "Calm down everyone. I'll ask what they are doing." Just then E.T. said, "Hi there. Where is my friend Alison?" "She's over there." I said, "Hi E.T." E.T. said, "Hi Margarite." "Hil" E.T. said, "Let's go play in my ship." I said, "OK E.T., but I can't go now. You're going to have to stay for a week." E.T. said, "OK." I said, "There is Katherine and her friend Tolly. Bye E.T." Alison Tuffli
One day I was walking to school. I saw a spaceship come down to Earth. I stopped walking and looked up. As it was coming down I saw an invader coming out. I want ed to run but I did not. I said, "What is your name?" "Do a boo a." "Doo a boo a", I said? "Yes, Do a boo a." Do a boo a said, "I have an orse." "What is an orse?" "I will show you." "Oh, you mean a horse?" It was funny. It was pink and blue with yellow spots. I liked it so much. I said, "Could I have it?" "Of course you can", Do a boo a said. "Right now?" "Yes, right now. I even have the mother and father also. You may have them as well." "OK, where are they?" "Over there." Meanwhile, I forgot about school. I said,"Goodbye. I have to go." I went to school. Hilary Hoover
One nice summer day, an animal circus came to Menlo Park. They just began putting up the tent when two invaders came. Their names were Melanie and Bobby. The people who were putting up the tent were scared. They thought that the invaders would take the animals, but they just wanted to see it. I saw it too. It was really good. Margi Hinman
Once upon a time there were two girls. Their names were Anna and Megan. Megan's nickname was Poppy. Anna's nickname was Trisha. They both had beautiful horses. Anna's horse was pure black. Anna named him Blacky. Megan's horse was a fiery red. She called him Golden Fire. One day Blacky and Golden Fire were out walking. Suddenly they saw some Earth Invaders. They ran to Megan and Anna. Megan and Anna jumped on their horse's backs. They told everybody. Then they all killed the Earth Invaders. Then Golden Fire and Blacky and Megan and Anna got a reward for what they did. Megan Young
One day long ago, when I was only six, my mother said to me, "Go down the hill and get me some milk." When I was about half way down the hill, I saw three or four, or maybe five, men. I looked again and saw that they were unlike other men. Their hair was green, their eyes were pink, and they all hopped on one foot. I stopped. Are they men or animals? I don't know what to call them. One of them came up to me and said, "I am from space. We want to see Mr. Brown." I said, "I know Mr. Brown. I will take you to him." It was a sight to see us walking down the hill. When we were finally there, I thanked them and went to get the milk. When I got h o m e , I said to my mother, "I had an adventure today." Elizabeth Gill
One Sunday night when I was walking down the street, this big huge red light was above me. It was so bright I couldn't even look up. All of a sudden it went away so I looked up and saw these red dots coming down. There were millions of them. So I started running home. When I got home I told my mom about it. She said, "You're kidding me!" "No, I am not! #Just look outside mom. Please." "Weliy she said, "OK." She looked out side and saw red dots and little weird things walking all over the house. When one of the red dots touched the ground, they would turn into weird things. My dad shouted, "They are invading us!" They went away. Daniele Floriani

Then I reminded myself about my wish and then I said to the ladybug, can I use my wish now? It said sure. So I used my wish and I never died. Then we lived happily ever after.
One night, after I went to bed, a magic carpet came flying into my room. I was not asleep, so I got onto it. It took me far away. I thought to myself that I shouldn't have gotten on it. And then I changed my mind. I saw a funny looking house. It took me in the house. When I got' in, I found a magic lamp. I rubbed it three times and a genie appeared. He asked me if I wanted to make a wish. I told him I wanted to go home. He pointed two of his fingers at me. And then I was back in my room. | .

If I were the smartest person in the world I could answer anything anyone asked me. They would ask me over one hundred things and I could answer every one. I could sit in my house and have lines of people asking me questions. That sure could be nice. Too bad I'm not the smartest in the world.

One night, after I went to bed, a magic carpet came flying into my room. I got out of my bed. I hopped on the carpet. It took me to my mom and dad. They said, what are you doing out of bed? I said, this magic carpet flew into my room. I said, can I go with him? Yes, you can go with him. So we were off. We went to an island called Kid Island. It was fun but I had to go home. One night, after I went to bed, a magic carpet came flying into my room . I tried to catch it but it flew too high. I tried to jump on it but still it was too high. One night I saw a spaceship land in our backyard. Something that looked like a purple horse with pink dots. A mommy with hearts walked out. On the horse there was a baby that had pencils sticking out. I thought that was pretty funny. A daddy with stripes of blue paint. They all walked out of the spaceship. The daddy lifted the baby off of the horse. The daddy said, "Bog a boo", and the baby laughed. They walked into the shed. The mommy opened the door. She walked in. I walked back and went to bed. In the morning I planned to go to the shed with my water gun because I did not want them in my shed. In the morning, I got them away. Amanda MacDonald

She was really scared. They had four eyes, one foot, and eighteen toes. My teacher said, "To recess." So we all did. Then the bell rang so we came in. It was time to go home. I got my lunch box and my homework and went home. The things from Mars followed me. I said, " W o u l d you like to come home with me?" They said, "OK." So they did. All the kids started to run. Then I said to myself, "He's T.E." Then it bacame night and the U.F.O. went away. David Lamond
One day Anna and I were walking down the street when we saw some strange people that were from space. We said to them, "Why are you here?" "Because we like your earth." "Well, I guess you can have a little of our earth. But only a little bit. OK." So we went to get them a little bit. "Here you are", said Anna. "Thank you very much. Goodbye." "Goodbye", said Anna and I. So that night, Anna and I went to tell our mother's and father's. Jessica Black
One day when I was riding my bike to David's house, I saw a big, big, big, spaceship. It had a red stripe around the middle and a yellow stripe around the rim. I stopped my bike and got off. A little green grodey man stepped out. He said, "Shemma coo mahado." "What?", I said. He said it again and again. So I got on my bike and rode to the lab. They said that they would come with me. When we got there I showed them the spaceship. We got all of the spacemen and put them into the car. I took two of them. The scientists studied the space men and thanked me. I forgot about David. It was a nice spring day when I took my rabbit out of her cage and went down to the stream. I let my rabbit down and it started to sniff all around. Then I said to myself, "Why is she sniffing around so much?" Then she started to go to the end of the stream. I followed her. When I got to the end of the stream, a little head came out of the water. It had three eyes, three noses, and three ears. I began to be very good friends with it. Liza Crowell
One day, some time ago, I went to the circus. It was fun until these Martians barged in and started invading the circus. I was also mad that I left, and I left my popcorn there. Then I started walking home. When I got home, I heard the telephone ringing. I answered it and it was my friend Andy. He invited me over. I said, "SureI! I'll see you in ten minutes." So I started walking over to his house. It took longer than I thought. Andy timed me with his new watch. When we started playing, the same Martians started invading Andy's house. I said, "I'll see you tomorrow at school." When I got home my mother was there too. She said, "Where have you been?" "Playing at Andy's house." "Now go to bed. I had a dream about Martians. In the morning my mother said, "Telephone." It was the police. They said that they had gotten the Martians back into space. Brooke Lyons
One day we were outside. Then it became dark. I heard this zinging noise. I was getting scared. I looked up. I saw a space invader. I ran as fast as I could into the classroom and told everyone else. Then I saw it land on the playground. Strange people were walking out of the spaceship. They had one eye, two noses, five feet, and two hands. They looked very nice. I went over to them. They said, "Gloomy, gloomy." I said, "What does that mean?'! They said, "That means hi, hi'." I said, "What is your name?" They said, "Our names are Go Go and Yo Yo." "My name is Jordan. One of the things I like about school Well a matter of fact nothing's too cool Because you have to follow the rules One of the things I l.ike best are field trips But sometimes they are a real rip French is 0.K. But we almost have it everyday Science is in style But not really worthwhile Except the things we're doing today Our experiments are O.K. And I think math Is rea1ly a laugh When it is time for spelling I'd like to talk out and start yelling But today I don't want to sleep and snore Because I really don't think school is a bore And each year I like Phillips Brooks School a lot more. David Wood
Math Math is hard to do Not including two plus two. Some people try to cheat Instead of hands they use their feet. A lot of people think math neat For them it's a special treat. A lot of people think their really great When they forget eight times eight. Some kids are only seven And they already know sixty-six divided by eleven. All of a sudden someone slams the doo And you forget five take away four. This is the end of the poem Because I'm going to study math in Ror Keith Wilbur

I know a very nice creature She is my teacher Her name is Mrs. Docter No one will ever sock her We had a Hobby, Craft and Bake Sale I'm glad it did not hai1 We went to Pigeon Point to see an elephant seal It was a great deal The elephant seals have lots of blubber I don't think it's rubber I 1ike to do art All of the girls like to draw a heart Science is a bore I want to leave and shut the door Math is a blast When you can do it fast Stan does P.E. I wish we could watch T.V. Storytime is the best because we color Other things are a lot duller When we go out to play That's the best part of the day Some people like lunch much better But sometimes we have bad weather Everybody hates Skills P iano Sometime? I have to take pills Spelling workbook is worse I d o n 't like pi ano Because one spelling word was purse You learn about soprano 1 only walk there in the sun We are doing the president John When it rains it can be fun 1 hope he turns into a fawn When we have a piano recital For jobs I like to do chairs We have to say the song's title Because I can pull out hairs Some of the notes are hard to With pronouns like her remember I might need a cure Even if I study from January to Schools have lots of rules December This is the end Some songs are good and some I have to talk to a friend. are bad A1exa Save 11e If you can't play them it could make you sad If you take piano you know it's •yucky But if you don't you're really 1ucky Now you know piano's a bore That's why I don't take it anymore. Maps
A map is a hard thing to study For everybody. A map is a hard thing to remember We did the U.S.A. in December. The states are something you should know Like the state of Idaho. The state I think is most lucky Is the state of Kentucky. And I know this is the end of my poem Because I am lending my map to Jerome. Keith W i 1bur
My. Animal Report I did my animal report on a Koala. It was fun. First I wrote my note cards. Then I organized my outline. Next I wrote my rough-draft. After that I wrote my real paper in ink. Then I did my bibliography and my title page. I chose my front cover and I was finally done. I liked learning about the Koala.
Mrs. Docter Mrs. Docter is our teacher In the third grade room is where you'd meet her She knows when your good She knows when your bad She knows what to do if your feeling sad She knows when your right She knows when your wrong She knows everything that's going on She teaches us spelling, history and reading too And also math like two times two This is the end of my poem today We1 11 see her again in sixth grade someday. David Wood
The Cave of Time One day I went hiking with my dad in the mountains. Strange things had happened in the mountains. So my dad and I were going to investigate. One person said to us, "Beware , some people go up in the mountains and never come back." We said that we would be careful. At noon it was getting hot and I spotted a cave. We ate lunch in the cave. A few seconds later 1 looked up and saw a dinosaur. He picked me up in his hand and I screamed. My dad heard my voice. He was hiding behind a rock. He ran as fast as he could. My dad found a catapult. It had a boulder in it. He cut the rope and the boulder went right through the dinosaur's head. The dinosaur fell down dead. I landed on his stomach. I was safe. Then the sky 1it up. When we got down the mountain, we got a reward. We were put in the Hall of Fame, and the Guiness Book of World Records. We were famous, but even now, the cave of time is only known by me and my dad. Adam Silver

A Trip to the Elephant Seals On Monday, February 7, the third grade class set out for Pigeon Point Lighthouse. We left in five cars. Our car started out last, because my dad forgot his sleeping bag, so my mom had to go and get it. We caught up with Mrs. Docter's van shortly before we got to the Lighthouse. After we got settled in the cabins we played around a little and then Steve took us to the top of the Lighthouse. It was fun even though I got a little dizzy. After the tour we had dinner. We ate spaghetti for dinner and cake for dessert. It was good. After dinner Steve came and showed us Lou his stuffed elephant seal. He was cute. We also lots of slides about elephant seals. Steve taught us a song. It was called "Blubber Buddies." I slept in the same room as Megan, Denice and Miss Schwarz. The next day everybody met in the girls cabin to eat breakfast. Afterwards we went to Ano Nuevo to see the elephant seals. We did not see Lou, the head alpha bull, but we saw many other big, fat elephant seals. We saw one female nursing her pup. We saw three harems and we saw males fighting. At the end of the tour we got to roll down a steep hill. We had lunch at Pescadero Beach. We saw a dead pup which had been separated from his mother in the storm. It made me sad. The r ip was fun.
If
I Were New in t h e C l a s s
If I were new in the class, I wouldn't know what to do or maybe not have any friends. If our class was studying the world or something I would have to catch up on things. Maybe I wouldn't know any teachers' names and kids would laugh at me. I maybe wouldn't know how to play any games at recess. Maybe no one would eat with me. Maybe people would tease me. But maybe no one would do anything to me. People would eat with me. But I don't know.
If I was invisible I would mess up my sister's room and my mom would think that my sister did it. If I was invisible I could say "mom" and she would turn around and she would not see me. I would take my sister's stuffed animal that she slept with every night and she wouldn't know who took it. Jessica Berkeley

Maps Maps are very hard to do China, Mongolia and Burma too Some countries are very tall And some countries are very small. 1 know all the countries of Asia Not including Malaysia. I was going to Bangladesh But 1 couldn't go because 1 cut my flesh. Mrs. Docter gave me a ticket to the Philippines But 1 said I'd rather visit some English queens. I was going to go to Vietnam But 1 was afraid of a bomb. John Ziegler

The Catastrophe Once upon a time there was this person in a boat. On the right a tornado was coming. On the left sharks are coming. The person in the boat was sort of scared because the mist had fallen and the boat was wobbly. When the sailor was on land lots and lots of people were teasing him. So one day that person and some slaves got off on this old torn down boat, and they went sailing off. The person in the boat was brave, the slaves were chicken. One of the slaves jumped into the water and one of the- sharks came up and bit his arm off. The other slave probably went into the little cabin. The person in the boat didn't care because they were teasing him. Five months later he arrived on shore and lived happily ever after.
Sci ence Science studying is sometimes fun Once we studied about the sun. I like the looks of Saturn It looks 1ike a very funny pattern I want to go to Mars And see the very little stars. If I 1ived on Jupiter I'd be much stupider. But I 1ive on earth And I'm filled with mi rth. Katie Bryan
The Solar System Around and around the sun they go, So slow, so slow Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. All the planets in their pattern. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars All the planets surrounded by stars Although the earth has but one moon All the other planets don't even have a spoon. John Ziegler P 1anets I wanted to go to the sun, but Mr. Towner said that wouldn't be much fun. I wanted to go to Mercury, But Mrs. Cargile said that would be the end of me. I wanted to go to Venus with Mrs. Noeller, but she had to buy a stroller. I wanted to go to Mars with Miss Root, but she didn't have a space suit. I wanted to go to Jupiter with Stan, but he said no, and away he ran. I wanted to go to Saturn with Mrs. Coberly, but she said come and sing with me. I wanted to go to Uranus with Mr. Brackett, but he was making too much racket. I wanted to go to Neptune with Mrs. Oocter, one fine day in June, but she said that would be too soon. I wanted to go to Pluto, but Mrs. Miller broke her toe. So I think I'll stay on earth and go to school, because ike it and think it's coo Adam S i1ver
Our Trip to the Elephant Seals On Monday, February 7 the third grade went to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostel. When we got there we went in our cabins and put out our sleeping bags. After that we had dinner. We had spaghetti. Then we saw a slide show and then went to bed. In the morning we got dressed and rolled up our sleeping bags and had breakfast. Then we went to see the elephant seals. When we got there we had to get our tickets. Then we had to walk two miles to get to the elephant seals and we finally got there. The elephant seals were funny. I liked going on the trip. Cary Kinkead

Our Trip to the Lighthouse When we got to the lighthouse Mrs. Docter parked her car with the rest of the people. She unloaded our stuff then she called out our names so we could get our stuff. When we got in we went in ur rooms. Gaby, Denice and I got one 'room and Jessica, Katie, Kristin, Stephanie, and Alexa were in another. A couple of minutes later we went up in the lighthouse. It was spooky. When I kot up to the top it started to rain, but t looked neat. When we came down I ooked out the window and I saw a light ing bolt. When we got out, the wind :ou!d blow you away. I will tell you, you would have loved it. Megan Collins
Pigeon Point Lighthouse Once our class went on a field trip to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse. The girls had one cabin. The girls cabin was called Seal and the boys cabin was called Whale. Then we went in our cabins to see what the rooms looked like. We went in to see the man who took us into the lighthouse. When we got up to the lighthouse the man who was takin us told ghost stories while a big storm outside was going on. Then before we went to bed we ran to a game room. Inside it was a ping pong table and a stereo. In the morning we went to see the elephant seals. I thought it was really fun. S tephan ie Miller
Our Trip to Ano Nuevo Our trip started at Pigeon Point Lighthouse. We took a tour of the lighthouse and then had a slide show on the elephant seals and then had dinner. After that we went to bed. The next day we had breakfast and then went to Ano Nuevo. When we got to the elephant seals it was fantastic. Some were fighting, some were throwing sand on their backs and some were waving to us. Then we had lunch at the beach and went back to P.B.S. Chris Jack
Elephant Seals When the third grade went to Ano Nuevo we saw some elephant seals. They come every year to breed and have thei r pups. Each year more and more come. Very soon we w i 11 have w a 11 to wall elephant seals. They may even take over Highway 1. This year many of the pups were killed in the big storm. So we may have to wait awhile before they start to spill out on the road. Gaby Hess
Convalescent
Home
Every month you know To the convalescent home I go. I always bring a present or two Because it's a nice thing to do. I always bring a friend indeed Because without him I wouldn't succeed. My person is nice I say When I go there it's a special day. When the clouds are gray we go there by car But it still isn't very far. Every time we go we write with pencils We use white paper, but we don't use stencils. Keith Wilbur Mrs. Dull The Convalescent Home is a place where sick or people that are old stay, for they can't take care of themselves.
A Stormy Day The weather's bad And 1 am sad That I can't go out to play. You know it's very boring Sitting here while it's pouring And I can't go out to play. Thunder's clapping While lightning is snapping And I can't go out and play. The wind is howling My dog is growli ng And I can't go out to play. The trees are swaying And I am praying That I can go out to play. The sun is shining And 1 'm not whining Because I can go out and play! David Wood
It is fun what we do at the Convalescent Home. The first day we came we sat and asked our person questions about her life. The next day we went we gave her our Valentines, pictures and read her stories about her and the trip to the Lighthouse. The next time we went we gave a musical play. The Convalescent Home is a fun place to go to. I think Mrs. Dull enjoys talking to Rob and me. We enjoy having Mrs. Dull as our person. Mark Reynolds

It took a long time for every class to come in and buy everything. made brownies. It was very fun! Jessica Berkeley
The Craft Show The Hobby, Craft and Bake Sale was a great success. The thi rd grade made about $120.00. The mothers made the goodies and they were good. The third graders made crafts like note holders, turtles, and pictures waxed on soap. Some of the classmates brought hobbies like ribbons, trophies, rocks, and basebal1 cards. The jelly bean guess was sold out so many people wanted it. John Guzy won it ! Jake

Math When you do your math homework You realize math is really a bore. When math is over at nine o'clock, You go to sleep and snore. When we are using school tools at math It's not much fun, It's not easy to have to follow the rules When we would rather play in the sun. In math we do multiplication And division too But if you are having trouble Then Stan will help you. Todd Smith
School I think school is very cool, I 1ike to read because I succeed. I like math because you learn things Like five times five, I think that problem has lots of jive. I 1ike 1unch Because you have to have a munch. I hate maps You learn countries like Asia Not to mention Malaysia. I like art, it is fun Sometimes it is pretty dumb. I like shari ng You can get some neat things And get to show 'em This is now the end of my poem. Chris Jack
The Year in Third Grade We loved giving the play Free to be You and Me And one time we went to the elephant seals by the sea. We spent a lot of time escaping the rain So we could go to the Convalescent Home to entertain. In French and Spanish we had fun And in math we really learned a ton. We spent a lot of time learning cursive, But identifying adjectives, verbs and nouns was worsive. We had to do a report on an animal we picked Learning the presidents wasn't too quick. Watching the movies of some countries I like best} But doing the maps is not my first request. Cary Kinkead
The Pa p e r
One day I was playing soccer and I found a paper. I saw that it said, "Go into the middle of the Pacific Ocean and dive. Then find a red X. Then Then you dig, Then you find it." 1 followed the map. First I found a key. Then 1 found the chest. I went up. I opened it and a person came out. He said, "If you find a magic wand and give it to me, then I'll give you three wishes." So I said yes. So I went to a magic pond. A wizard came up and gave me a magic wand. I got lost on my way back. 1 took out my magic wand and I said, "Abra cadabra cazam take me back to the chest." Soon I gave him the wand, and my wishes were to have one million dollars, a Ferrari, and a mansion. The million dollars I would spend on a mini bike and a helmet. I would live in the mansion and have the Ferrari as my car. I would live happily ever after. Martin Henri ksen
The Play: Free To Be You and Me
Every day we practiced hard, And every Christmas I get a card. When we ran up it was hail, Although I had a crooked pail. I had to wear white and blue, But then I noticed I had the flu 1 wanted to read the "Sun and the Moon" Because it wasn't afternoon. After the play I said, "That wasn't too bad," But then I noticed someone was sad. Denice Cheung
Comput e r s
In class we use computers to learn and play And they're especially fun on a rainy day. Using new programs can be lots of fun But many times I'd rather go outside and run. Math and spelling are sometimes a pain But its something else to play dungeon campaign. To lots of people apples are meant to eat But in third grade apples are computers and can't be beat. Our Animal Report
Reading Poem I like reading very much Braille reading you have to touch Sometimes reading is very funny The only problem you don't get money Sometimes reading is not very great So I throw the book out on that date Some stories do not make sense Like the little boy jumped the 6 foot fence.
Songs in Our Play In our play, ("Free to be You and Me") I was the old woman who lived in a shoe. The songs we sang were "Free to be You and Me," "When I Grow Up," "Mommies are People" and "It's Alright to Cry." We sang "Free to be You and Me" again at the end. My sister and my mom both liked The Pain and the Great One. I liked Boy Meets Girl. Alexa Savelle
We had to study hard and it took a long time. We had to have note cards, a title page, and a cover. The things that told about the animal was 1ike a story. We had to have a bibliography that told what books we used or ency clopedias we used. At first, we used note cards and then we put them in the story. Clint Coddi

The P r e s i d e n t s
I like the presidents. There's lots of interesting things about them. William Harrison was in office the shortest. Cleveland was president twice. Teddy Roosevelt wasn't elected, but he became president because McKinley died Kennedy was the youngest elected president. Lincoln was president during the Civil War. Kennedy was the first president born in this century. Kristin Braniff
Art I like art. It was fun making blow painting and the Easter egg with a chicken in it. I like art so much that I do it at home. Some people in my class that I know of do not like art, but I like art. Art is a wonderful thing because we wouldn't have fancy houses and sculpture without it. Pau1 Kaiser
Thi rd Grade My third grade at Phillips Brooks Was special in many ways. I learned a lot in math and spelling And also about the president's days We studied science and art and music, Free to be You and Me was our play. I wrote a report on Cobras, And in art we worked with clay.

Ra in 1 1 ike ra in It's not a pain We can play all day In the rainy month of May Rain is water Today I taught my daughter A1 1 about the water Rain can help flowers and vegetables grow Like corn, carrot, potato and tomato. I like the sound of rain on the roof at night When I'm in my bed all snug and tight.
Rain is a Pain
Weather Sometimes weather is not that great. Sometimes it rains all over the state I hate when it's cold I wish cold could be sold. Sometimes weather is really funny Sometimes weather is really sunny I hate when it's floody I don't like it when it's muddy I hate when there is lightning It's sometimes very frightening It hurts when there's hail You can't get the mail. Sometimes when it's snowing I see the flowers growing When it's really windy I can't see my friend Cindy No matter what the weather is like You can't always ride your bike. Katie Bryan

TIMOTHY TURTLE, THE GENIUS
SI
It was a wet, cold day when Timothy Turtle's mother said: "Today it is rainy and you can't play outside, so I'm going to teach you everything there is to know. School doesn't teach you much," Timothy did like that idea. Timothy's mother got a small chalkboard and paper and pencil She taught him every human language and every animal language. Math, spelling, and all the cities, states, countries, continents rivers, lakes, oceans, islands, mountains, deserts, etc. One day he was walking along when a big hand scooped him up. Timothy looked up and saw a little boy's face. The little boy took Timothy home and fed him potato chips. That night, while the boy was having dinner, Timothy did the boy's homework. When the boy came back,he was surprised to see Timothy doing his homework. He didn't care as long as the turtle did it right. The boy soon discovered that Timothy loved gummy bears. So, every night the boy gave Timothy a gummy bear if he did the boy's homework. Timothy enjoyed living with the boy and the boy liked Timothy. One day Timothy got lost, but then, as he walked, he start ed to see some familiar things. Then he saw his home and ran to the door. He was so exhausted that he just fell asleep. His mother came out because she was on her way to her friend's house. When she saw Timothy she was startled but happy to see her son. Timothy was glad- to be back home, though he did|*iss the gummy bears. The next day, Timothy went to the dentist. He had four cavities. The dentist asked him what he had been eating. Timothy just smiled. jh

HOW SKUNKS GOT THEIR STRIPES There was once a skunk called Stripes who had no tripes! His family had strides but not their son,“ strides Everyone in the forest called him "the odd ball." * He tried every way to get real stripes — like, he tried to put sap on his back and he tried to roll in milk weed. The last thing he did was to get a hawk mad on purpose so the hawk would scratch him, but even that didn t work. One day, some people came and cut down trees to build a cabin. When the people were painting their new house, the skunk came and lifted his tail. The man on the ladder got scared and dumped paint on him, but the paint did not form stripes! Stripes just about gave up! Then, some campers came and left a backpack.
Stripes
JuniorS Jfiendnl0?ked and saw some ZaPPerdoo toothpaste. Junior, his only friend, put some toothpaste on Stripes' back. It smeared, but stayed on. Q+T,. fverybcdy in the forest laughed at Stripes’ smeared stripes. He got so mad he burned down half of the animal town and was sent to jail. But Stripes didn't care -- at least he got his stripes!
eY ft r iCL r\ THE TALE OP THE TAIL There once was a rabbit called Ralph. He was a white rabbit and was a show-off, too! Ralph loved to show off in front of his friends especially. He had two really good friends. Their names were Peter and Charlie. Peter was white with beige spots and had long ears. Charlie was white with light patches of brown. Ralph and his friends were all sno w .rabbits, but they all had different personalities. They were all neighbors. Their mothers were friends, too. The three friends loved to jump pieces of wood. They always would see who could get the farthest and the highest. They were all good. Charlie loved to climb; Peter loved to jump; and Ralph loved to run! One day, Ralph was going to show off, so he said to his friends, "I'll get so close to the bobcat, but I won't even touch him. His friends said "okay." So, the bobcat chased him and bit his tail off. Then he bit all the rest of the rabbits tails off! That's why rabbits have short tails! ^

TROUBLE WITH SANTA CLAUS 1
This year, things aren't quite right,-like when I got five wrong in my homework . . . I don't know — it could be the cal culator! Probably my sister dismantled it and did something wrong. And on Thanksgiving, the turkey got up, ate the peas, and flew out the window. Well, so much for Thanksgiving. And the time I could have scored a goal, something grabbed my foot, and they took the ball away. I knew there was something wrong.
But WHAT?
I got my jacket on and went shopping with my mom. When we got to the store we heard people telling what had happened to them over the year, like: "I hit the tennis ball up, high into the air, ut then it dropped straight down and didn't make It over so I los the championship;" and"I was walking down the street when a tele phone pole suddenly came down and almost hit me!" I knew some thing WAS wrong. We got our things and went home. At home, Mom had a neat anta Claus that you could make the arms go up and down. I moved his arms up and down three times and something strange happened. I felt myself in a time warp. Next thing I knew, I was in Santa Claus-'house. I opened the door and I heard, organized for Christmas."
"Please, dear, get your things
"Yes, dear, after I play five more games of Pitfall," knew Santa Claus liked his Atari more than Christmas!) I decided to go in and find out what was going on. Santa was playing Pitfall!
(I never Inside,
"Why don't you get your stuff ready for Christmas?" I asked. "Because I'm testing all the toys and this one's a good one," he answered. "I really like to play with good things. I would rather play withthis than deliver toys, so tell everyone that I'm not deliverin' any toys. I like this much more . . . and don't give me any shenanigan stuff about people crying that they d i d n ’t get presents." I felt like crying myself. I thought about something to do about this. Then I called Mrs. Claus and told her my plan. "A wonderful idea!" she said
— COiq-hViue-d on we-Xt" pA^e.
Then I persuaded Santa to deliver the presents by telling him he would find something wonderful waiting for him when he came back. (He didn't know that the thing was an Atari with cartridges.) I know that he delivered the presents because when I went to his house later I saw him playing with the Atari and there were no toys left in his house. When I got back home, I found an Apple II Plus with a note on it saying: "Thank you for helping me deliver presents and thank you for the Atari ---0 "
(or How a Bee Got its Stinger!) Long, long ago, before bees had stingers, a bee-eater's normal meal would, obviously, be bees. But one day, while a bee was getting pollen out of a daisy, the daisy got mad. She said to the bee, "Why do you guys have to get honey?? I’m tired of you guys! She said a bunch of other things, too. And with that, she pushed him into a thorn bush. One of the thorns stayed on him and the bee found that it was a great way of protecting himself. All the other bees went to get thorns, too. The next day a bee-eater tried to eat a bee, but the bee stung him with his thorn before the bee-eater could eat him. THIS WENT ON ALL DAY, so the bee-eater was hungry. While the bee-eater was walking, looking for delicious bees, he came to an ant hill. He was so hungry that he ate the ants and found they were QUITE SCRUMPTIOUS! And that became his main meal to this day

HOW THE OAT GOT HIS CLAWS This story of How the Oat Got His Claws begins one sunny morning in Africa, in a city called Wafo, which is on the edge of a jungle. It just happens that in this city there lives a cat with his two older brothers. And it just happens that at every meal his two brothers come up to him and take most of his meal and say: "We're older so we get more food!" So, on this morning this cat had had enough of it and started off towards the jungle. Hours later, while sleepily walking through the jungle, he came upon some old monkey bones, and without noticing them, walked right over them. The cat meyowed like crazy and tried to pull the old monkey bones out of his feet, but they stuck to all four of his feet like honey. Watching overhead was a wild bird who spoke up and said, "Why don't you try to make use out of them?" Then the bird sug gested, "Why don't you go over there to that tree and try to climb it?" So, the cat did what the bird told him to do, and was able to climb the tree by digging his new claws into the bark of the tree.. Then the’bird said, "GoodI Now pretend that that plant over there was another cat and pretend that you are in a fight with him, and swipe him with your new claws." So the cat did so and ended up shredding the plant to bits! The bird said, "Well done! Now it is time for you to go home, for it is nearly dinnertime, and remember to use your new claws as I have taught you." So the cat went back to Wafo for dinner. And when his brothers tried to take most of his food away, the cat swiped them both with his new claws, and they never tried to take his food again. And that is how the Oat got his Claws.

The next place I went was to England in 1576, right when Drake was leaving for his trip around the world. I got to go. When we landed in Panama part of the Golden Hinde broke off, I fell into the water, and I left for my hometown park. There, I told my friends about Drake's trip and we all got our history tests right. Then I zapped myself to World War II and helped the Ameri cans win. Then I zapped myself to Moses and I saved the five last commandments! Then I did something bad. Accidentally, I fouled up Thomas Edison so he didn't in vent the electric light. (But a while later I helped him invent it.) O

J fV
My name is Juan.
I own Rancho de la Gata.
I will tell how I got my rancho. First, I decided what land I wanted — which is a nice shape, from the tall pine tree to the pointed rock, to a lightning-struck tree -- and then made a map of these marks. I sent this map to the governor in Monterey. He gave the land to me since I belong to the Catholic Church and am a citizen of Mexico. So now I own the land. One of the first things I did was to build my house. I built it out of adobe bricks, then whitewashed the bricks. The house has about eight rooms, is one story high, and has enough room for me, my children, and my guests. The name of my rancho is, as I have said before, Rancho de la Gata. My brand looks like this: tSA I had, at last count, about 1000 cattle and about 20 horses. Also, I own some sheep, some pigs, a few goats, and a number of chickens. I have 10 very skilled vaqueros. They rope and brand the cattle and help me take care of the rancho. I have only three servants. One woman helps my wife care for my children, another cooks meals, and the last does odd jobs around the house. The crops we grow are: corn, peas, beans, apples, figs, and some other fruit trees. We trade hides and tallow from the cattle for things like coffee, oranges, and sugar. de trade with places like Russia and the United States of America. We give parties mostly after a successful rodeo, but once in a while we just give them for fun. Usually at a party we have a barbecue. Then we dance. It is very much fun. My favorite thing about living on a rancho is having parties, because I love to dance
A TRUE STABLE GIRL . I don't understand "why ttrsy-put a girl like me to work in the stables. I like horses, but I'm the most modern girl in this pueblo. I am a girl who is tidy and neat, and I live in an ugly small room with cobwebs on the 10 foot high ceiling. My sister lives in a small house, but bigger than mine, and it's clean and warm. Dear Diary,
I found a young girl, Yvette, who had no place to go, so I let her stay with me. She knows a lot about horses. One day when we were taking the horses to the blacksmith, one horse kicked at me and kept kicking until he broke my leg. Yvette got the doctor to bring me home and put on a cast.

• BEAR TRAPPER
*
* %
It was Monday morning, 5:00 a.m. I was packed and ready to go on my five day bear hunt. I got up and left for the forest. I got to the forest that night at about 8:30 p.m. The next day, I started setting up traps. After lunch, I heard one of the traps snap shut! I slowly crept over to where I heard it go off. I glanced around. Nothing was in sight, not even the bait! Then I looked down and saw some giant bear track in the mud. They were about three times as big as my hand! I knew right away he was going to be hard to trap. The rest of that day I worked on making a bigger and different trap. At about 9:00 the next morning, I heard the trap whip! I crept slowly over and there the monstrous bear hung. I had put some foxglove in the bait to make him drowsy. I figured that by the time I had finished getting ready to take the bear back he would be drugged enough. At about 2:00 that afternoon, we started back to the mission. One day later we arrived. Just a day before the bear and bull fight. The next day at the bear and bull fight I thought to my self that the bear I had caught had the most beautiful fur I had ever seen. Then I said to myself, "Good luck, Grande Negro!" (Big Black)
AFRICA I took a trip to Africa I slept in a native hut They gave me food and water And I told them about King Tut!

I am an Indian. My name is Zenartuy. But in English it's Donower, with the combination of "Bonner", the party that went over the Sierras, and "plower". They call me that because of my trips over the Rockies; they also never forget my trip from San Juan Bautista to St. Louis. I have always thought that the best part was when I was almost killed by warlike Indians up in the Rockies. But I had better tell it from the beginning, when I escaped during.the round-up, as the gringos call it, during the fiesta. The sun was bright — perfect for the fiesta. I was a highly valued Indian for my horsemanship. I could ride almost any horse in the world, and all in the mission. I had never been taught how to, but when the earthquake came, I jumped on the last horse there was. It turned out to be the most stupid horse there ever could be, said the padres.. Personally, I thought him a little weak in the mind, too. I made the lazy horse run like fire — faster than the stablemaster's horse! His horse and he both fell through the fault, but I escaped. After the earthquake I was given my own horse and made mayordomo. I looked around. It was pretty clear in my head which horse I would ride. Even when positions were called out I paid them no heed; I was concentrating on my plan of action. Later, I decided to draw a map of my plan. It was as follows: « «.+c V/J*rc f flrgj /-
( '»'«-* ioffentJ foUCV
^ jp- TK» r W 1* I As I walked out o_£/The stable with the horse, everybody starte^ySTreefTflg. T"“got on my most prized horse very solemnly. X T rolTe out. My heart started beating so fast I thought it would burst. I looked around at the spectators. Among them was my 13 year old brother who was one of the many stableboys. I also saw my little sister. For once this morning she had been half decent. Oh yeah, that was yesterday; today she was at the dormitory all morning. Since a fiesta was due today we had no work to do.
It was then that I was brought back to my senses by my horse's neighing. I started to ride. . . When I reached the point where I was supposed to turn, I went straight ahead just as I had planned. The vaqueros then realized I was heading for the gate. They were strangely alert today and the nearest one started veering towards me. I easily avoided him by whipping the horse's flank so he too would veer — but to the other side. Then, when they thought they had me cornered, I lunged forward, whipping out the rifle my brother had made for me. page.-
I fired once, twice, and then three times. One of the vaqueros fell! Before I could think, my horse, by some auto matic power, went forward now that a space was open. Then I whipped my horse with the dull cow-hide whip I had been carry ing. He went forward out of the gate so fast I did not even sense it. I rode hard for three days heading south on the San Andreas Fault. Everything went well until the fourth day. It was then that I realized that danger was upon me. The ground opened up! My horse started slipping into the deep crevice. . . I was thrown from my horse. . . I went flying through the air. I woke up, heated by a warm fire. A boy was standing there with a worried expression on his face. "Who is this boy?" I asked myself. \ ^ ' /O.

TERESA
Hello, my friends. I am an Indian girl by the name of Tuki. I help the mission by making food, clothes, blankets, baskets, and other things. To make the food, like tortillas, you first have to get the ingredients. Teresa, a Mexican woman, taught me to cook. Teresa likes teaching me the skills I must know. Today is Sunday. I must not forget to go to Church. Time to go. Church isn't that exciting, but at least I get to pray for the people I love and to my Gods. Tomorrow I'm going to the looms to weave. I like the way Teresa weaves. She makes many things. Once she made a cloak for me. Teresa is the best teacher I ever had. I wish my other teachers were as nice. At night in my dormitorio we talk in bed because Teresa sleeps next to me. Last week we went to a fiesta at the Vallejos' rancho. Everybody was dressed in their best clothes. The first night passed. We woke up really early to dancing and singing. After the fiesta, we went back to the mission. We did our everyday chores. Today and always I will remember those few days. I learned that Teresa had died — but she will always be in my heart.
It was the night before Christmas and Santa had finished his dinner. Santa was happy because he had gotten a new sled. He tried to get in it but he was too fat, so he tried his old one. He was so fat that when he got in it, it collapsed. Santa had one of his elves go to Toys 'R Us and buy the biggest sled they had. When the elf came- back with a sled, Santa tried it out. One thing was wrong. His feet couldn't hit the ground. He said that would have to do, anyway. Santa took off. While he was flying over the ocean, a breeze came along and started rocking his sled. Santa, not being able to hang on, fell out without the reindeer noticing. Being so fat, Santa was like a ball on the water. He floated! The breeze blew Santa to shore. When Santa stood up on land, he saw a light in the sky. Suddenly the light hit the ground. It was a spaceship! E.T. came out and said, "E. T. help." Santa quickly grabbed his emergency toy beg and started toward the saucer. He couldn't fit in the hatch! Since this was his last chance, he strapped himself to the bottom and he was able to deliver all his presents.

HOW THE KILLER WHALE BECAME BLACK AND WHITE Once upon a time, when all Killer Whales were white, there was a Killer Whale named Harry. He lived in a large pool at a Marine Laboratory. The scientists were teaching him to save drowning people out in the ocean. Harry was very kind and some times, since he was so nice, they would let him play with dolphins in another pool. One day, the S.S. Minnow was sinking out in the middle of the ocean. The scientists let Harry go with the Coast Guard, but Harry was faster so he got out to the ship first. Harry saw Gilligan and the Professor swimming. Harry came over to them. They were scared, but Harry had a note around him saying he was trained, so they got on him. Harry swam around and found Mary Anne, Mr. Howell, Mrs. Howell, Ginger, and the Skipper. There was oil in the water from the boat so all the people were a little black and Harry had a couple of big blotches of oil on him. Soon the Coast Guard came and picked up the people and brought Harry back. The scientists at the lab couldn't get the oil off so Harry stayed black and white. A few months later a letter came from Hollywood saying they were going to sue Harry, because he saved the people instead of letting them get shipwrecked. Harry ruined the whole TY show, "Gilligan's Island." ^
HOW THE CARROT GOT ITS COLOR An unknown power brought the little white seed to the beautiful land. Earth. Then, one sunny day in May, an orange breasted robin was flying overhead and saw the beautiful white seed. The robin flew down at a rapid speed to pick up the little seed. Miles and miles the robin flew to find some rich reddish-orange soil. There the robin dropped the seed. All of a sudden, it started to rain. In a few days the seed had started to sprout with many green stems. One day, a young boy came along and pulled the stems out of the ground. The boy was amazed to see a beautiful, orange carrot I And ever since, carrots have been reddish-orange in colorl

MY WAR ADVENTURE I was watching TV at 2:30 p.m. when the screen suddenlyblacked outl I thought it was a blackout, but all the other lights were on. Then something said, "Come heeeeeeeeeere." I said, "Who's that??" Then I touched the TV and suddenly I was in the middle of World War I! In 1918. In a tent. A man came in. ft
I
I, I'm
He was a soldier.
He said, "Who are you?"
ft
"Come on!"
Then a sergeant came in and said, "Private!
Who is this boy?
"I don't know!" "I'm Alex Steinhart and I got zapped In time." "Oh-h-h-h." The sergeant let me stay there because I didn't have any other place to go. The private told me his name was Joe Butler. The next day, Joe told me that he was going with the rest of the army to attack the enemy camp. "I want to go, too," I said
I wanted to go, so I hid in a chest full of ammunition. The chest that I was in was put in the truck full of soldiers. When we got near the enemy lines, the motor of the truck was heard and the enemy started shooting. The Americans shot back. Suddenly I got an idea! I found some matches in the chest, lit them, and ran off. In ten seconds it went off. There was a "KABOOM!!!" Everybody ran because they thought it was an attack I ran and jumped in a jeep with some American soldiers and we drove back to their camp. When everyone came back to the American camp, I told Joe what I had done and he spread the word. Later on that night, I received a medal for saving the American Army from the enemy who almost trapped them — but just as I was handed the medal, I was zapped back to my house! It was only 2:32 p.m.! I had only been gone two minutes!

i m \ ►7 1 n» HOW THE PROCUPINE GOT ITS QUILLS
Once there was a porcupine, but not the kind we know Treatise it had no quills. Instead it had soft skin. This porcupine always got into trouble so he had to run under bushes or hide so he would not get spanked by his parents. Pretty soon some foxes who lived near him noticed that he could not protect himself. So, they started to pick on him and throw rocks at him.. He had to hide in the bushes a lot. One day, he saw a big German Shepherd and he knew he should not mess with him. When he as playing hop scotch he heard some thing growling at him. He turned around. It was the big German Shepherd! The porcupine was blocking the German Shepherd's way. The porcupine looked where to hide and the only place was in the thorn bushes. So he ran all the way through them and the German Shepherd ran around them, but when the porcupine came out of the bushes he had thorns on him. The German Shepherd ran into the porcupine and lots of thorns went on him. From that day on, the German Shepherd did not mess with the porcupine. The porcupine went home and showed all the porcupines and they all ran through the thorn bushes. And that's how the porcupine got its quills.
THE ATTACK OF THE GIANT SUNFLOWER Once there was an evil magician, Gargament, who lived near Washington, D.C. He made an evil potion out of butter and rum. When he was about to drink, the potion spilled out of the window and landed on his sunflower. The sunflower started to move! Meanwhile, I was in a nearby casino having a double coke on the rocks. Suddenly, I heard people running. I went outside and saw a sunflower walking down the street on its roots, spitting seeds at people! Ten people fell to the ground!. It chased me into the casino. I threw some Sprite on it. It shook and ran away. I went down to the basement to get some things for the bartender When I turned on the lights, I saw the sun flower hiding and trembling in a corner. He had 50 more seeds left. He spat 10 seeds at me. The seeds missed. He ran up the stairs and shot the bartender. He ran outside and shot 10 more people. Then he rushed over to Congress and shot nine people. He had 20 seeds left. He chased me until I came to a cliff. He walked slowly toward me. I slowly moved back. He had only one seed left. The seed hit me. Suddenly, the sunflower died because he had shot his last seed. I could feel the poison going through my blood and I fell off the cliff. The next thing I knew, I was in a hospital. "You'll be fine," said a nurse. "We removed the poison seed. Gargament has been put in Jail for ruining our environment!" said the doctor. by
Back in the time of the cavemen, the giraffe had a very short neck. There once was a giraffe who went for a walk. He was very hungry when he had an idea: he would run and Jump and grab an apple with his mouth. So he tried, but a mean tree sloth caught him by the neck_. Since his body was so heavy, it fell down, but his head was still held by the mean tree sloth. He yanked his head from the mean sloth. He found that his neck had grown longer. Now he could get an apple without Jumping! When his family saw him, they all laughed and made fun of him. But when they saw that he could pick fruit off the tree they all »ent to get long necks, too! 6 g J)^
HOW THE PORCUPINE GOT ITS SPINES
Once there was this porcupine who didn't have a spine, because no porcupine did. He lived in a field near the moun tains. He had some friends, too, that lived near him. Every day he took a walk. Then, one different direction. He thought it would he was walking, all of a sudden something a fox tail. He tried and tried and tried back. He could not. So he ran back home pull it out.
day, he walked in a be interesting. As stuck in him. It was to get it out of his and got his mom to
The next day he went out again. He went past where he had left off before. Suddenly, he got two more fox tails stuck in himself. Again he ran home to ask his mom if she could get them out. She did. \ Then he went on from where he had left off. He continue to get more and more foxtails stuck in him, and every time went back home to get them pulled out. One day he got seven foxtails stuck in him. His mom just said, "I am tired of pulling these annoying foxtails out of youl Next time, ask someone else!I!" But the next time, he could find no one else to pull them out. So he went walking around with seven foxtails stuck in his back. Then, the next day, he got even more stuck in him. And again no one would pull them out! So every day he went walking and got more stuck in his back. And every time he would go back and ask his mother and every time she would say, "NO!" yf, (.Then one day, he had so many foxtails that [H they covered up his back. Soon, summer came Lr / • 1 ^ and the foxtails got hard and black. Then a -1 ( (v they turned into spines. All the porcupines 3 new spines. VIOLIN Playing the violin has changed my life. I have traveled many places and given concerts to some famous people such as Louise M. Davies, the philanthropist who donated the money for the Davies Symphony Hall in San Fhaneisco. I like playing the violin" because I have gone: to many places, made new friends, and have acquired a talent. Playing the violin has made me new friends. My teacher teaches a violin group once a week for all her students. I have gotten to know each one of them well. I also know some well-known Suzuki violin teachers such as, Lorraine Fink of Ohio and Atsuko Eastman from Edmonton, Canada. I love playing the violin because it has brought’me friends from the United States as well as foreign countries such as Japan. I have gone1 to many places playing the violin with other kids studying under Marian Weaver, our teacher. We have been invited and have played at the Ahwanee Hotel in Yosemite' National Park and*Modesto State College. We have played at senior centers and convalescent homes in the Menlo Park and Palo Alto area. I have also gone to violin institutes in San Francisco and Marin County. Going places studying the violin is fun. Playing the violin has given me a talent that I1 will probably have all my life. It is mainly fun except for practicing, but mostly that is o.k.l Violin playing has opened up a whole new world for me, the world of music. For me it's hard to stop once I start playing. I love playing the violin. BY S a r a h
A SNAZZY CAR Some people think that age gives a car character' and personality. I ’ve got a car that has been passed down through the ages. MY GRANDMOTHER When my grandmother- died, I was about six years old, and I never got over it. She: died from cancer when she was sixty. She used to teach me a lot of things. My mother was too busy to play with me. Before my grandmother died 1 had a lot of fun with her. We would go to the park. Sometimes she would take me out to our garden, and we would pick black berries. Once she gave me a few tulip bulbs and we planted them together. After they grew up, something - a rabbit or something like, that ate the flowers, but my grandmother said she; would get me new ones. <£g> <§3 $ £$ Then she found out she had cancer-. She had to take a drug which killed off the cancer cells but at the same time killed off normal cells, which made her really sick. I w a s n ’t allowed to see her. After awhile, the drug took affect and she got better. She was able to receive visitors in her room, and on really sunny days: she went out for walks. Sometimes she would go out to dinner parties. After- awhile she got worse! Her medication didn't work anymore. The cancer cells took over most of her body. When she was in the hospital, I was very lonely. My sister was too young to play with. My mother had my baby brother. He was so sick that I was sent to my grandfather's house to stay for awhile. My grandfather was really strict towards me. I tried getting friends over there, but they were always too busy. I was very miserable there. After my grandmother died, I was sad. 1 had a dream that my grandmother came back down to earth, but when I woke up, nobody was there. For many nights I cried in bed. After"a few years we went to Singapore. It was hot there, and I wished my grandmother had never died. When a few years passed, we decided to move back here. When we got back, my mother had the garden trimmed (which meant they cut t garden bare). All Grandmother's flowers died, and that made me very sad. by

SPANISH FRENCH ENGLISH HISTORY MATH SCIENCE RECESS LUNCH SCHOOL ART \oCi~
Once upon a tine we were working in the classroom. Then we heard a fire drill, and nobody lined up because everybody thought it was just a drill. Randy screamed, "There is.... there's a real fire," and everybody ran to look where Randy was pointing. Then everybody ran out to the blacktop, and we got directions. Nobody was hurt. The firemen came and put out the fire, and all the damage was fixed. by

"'Alii,'*' called. Pat, "’d o n ’t dally on your way to the store!"' I nodded hack courteously, feeling malice rising at the way my fourteen yeair old sister treated me. I mean five years apart is not an alarming difference! I ran on to the store, the quarters whistling in my pocket. I stopped in front of the immense; Safeway store, took a lasting hreath of cold, moving air-, and went in. I walked into the candy section and decided on a Mars bar to quench my appetite. After going through the; ordeal of having my parents die, 1 had learned to be on my own a little more. Suddenly there was a sound of shattering glass. Then a loud wail arose, followed with a nasty scowl. "Robbed!"1 someone cried. "My baby has been killed!"1 someone else screamed. I stood motionless and then bought my items and ran out of that store. There was the scent of potatoes burning. I watched our old yacht bobbing in the water. We would have to sell that old yacht. Pat would no longer1 boast about her parents not being divorced. We now had no parents or relatives, but Pat and I would still D.ive in the slums instead of an orphanage-. The wind dried: my tears as 1 went home. I picked up the root of a plant that was supposed to be wholesome. Slowly I walked into my home that held so many memories. BY

Winter in a northern state can be something of an adventure. It's impossible to get to school, but it is fun to play in the snow. Sometimes the ice cracks when you're skating on it. It's my favorite time of year. Ellen, Nancy, and I went to the lake six days ago. We have our own little harbor and four boats. My boat's red, Nancy's is blue, Ellen's is green, and Mat's (my brother) is bright orange. Ellen, Nancy, and I were all in our boats, and we rowed out to our island and; slept there. Christmas vacation is the best part of winter because my mom and dadalways go away for two weeks. They went away the daybefore we come out here. Only Mat knew we were out here. He didn't care. Nancy finally said, on the sixth day, that we had better get back home, so Mat wouldn't worry about us. We started beck. We got to the middle of the lake, and Ellen's boat tipped over. Ellen started screaming. Then she got pulled down under the water. Nancy went down, too. I was scored. I grabbed the oars and started rowing towards shore. When I finally got there, I yelled for Mat and he came running to me. I told him what had happened. We rowed outand got Ellen and Nancy back. They were frozen!! Wegave them both hot baths and tea. Winter is over now. It's summer vacation. Ellen, Nancy, and I are playing in the sha.de on the island. 3Y

A RATHER STRANGE MEETING The meeting was adjourned because of a fire alarm. Smoke filled the building and there was a question of whether or not the fire had been set with malice. The heat of the fire shattered the windows. The fire spread rapidly. Amid the bedlam a trio of firemen arrived, punctual as usual. The fire was quenched in no time. There were no calamities; the death toll was zero. The heroic troop of fire fighters had prevented a great ordeal. The fire engine left with the siren wailing. y/e all sat around motionless. The horrible scent of the smoke was still around us, so the members of the meeting decided to have a wholesome lunch on a yacht which was anchored in the marsh. There everyone could forget about the slums and come to the root of the nroblem. BY

CLASS HISTORY
FIRST GRADE was full of experiences of many kinds. Stacy remembers a struggling match with Miss Root because she didn't want to leave her mom... Sean arrived in the class speaking only Chinese — he was very quiet! David 0. and Craig had an enemy named Chuck who pulled them around by the hair... Joey chased Caven to get him to eat lunch with her... Miss Root always let us play Muffin Man and Stoop Skip.
SECOND GRADE found Melanie, George, John, and Donny in our class... Miss Schwarz taught us songs and plays all the time, which was fun.., In between, the girls chased the boys to the hill in a game called King and Queen (Jessica always wanted to^ be the Queen)... Two of the kids liked eaoh other and would lock everybody else out so they could dance... We will never forget Roy's accident and his having to wear a helmet the rest of the year.
THIRD GRADE was sooo tubular. Becky and Riohard joined us... We had a great hobby show, and Mrs. Docter made us memorize all the Presidents, which has since come in handy.... We went to see the elephant seals and made Santas out of egg cartons... We had lots of French teachers that year and a nice music teacher. . . When Leeanne caused Melanie to ruin her math with a mouthful of water, she had to do it all over again.
FOURTH GRADE was sin unpredictable year... Our class was the absolute noisiest; Mrs. Landreth would have to go outside and punish a tree! Five new people joined us: Nat, Suki, Shelley, Johanna, a n d .Carolina... We made missions and Indian villages, and we had many field trips... At Mrs. Landreth's cabin in Inverness, the girls didn't get in trouble for raiding the boys, but the boys did get in trouble for raiding the girls. Stan had a spazz! We became movie stars. Our awesome movie about Indians had to be filmed four times! Mrs. L. carried her stool around the room and shook up* the chalk... Every two weeks we had little "girl" and "boy" talks with her.
FIFTH GRADE was memorable for many things. It was the year of the humungous fight between John and Allan... When Allan got an A- in math, Mrs. Westmoreland hung it up on the board... Mr. T. dumped David A. in the garbage can... Rich and Nat flew Becky's backpack from the flagpole... Joy came to add joy to our class... We took the first graders to the Exploratorium and went to the symphony (Shelley fell asleep). Although we had fewer field trips, we had a lot of fun and got to learn all about history (southern version) from Mrs. W . .. We were loud and bad. Some of our laughter came over Mrs. W.'s accent (we memorized "poims")! Often she could be heard saying, "Suki and Julie, STOP talkingJ"; when she went to the board and tapped her chalk on the study hall list, the room changed to com plete silence. ( c o n t i n u e d on n e x t page )
We quieted down in SIXTH GRADE. All but three of us took the risk of entering Mrs. Altrocchi's class. We found out that it wasn't so bad after all... Even though we only went on two field trips, it's been fun... Mrs. A. gave us several more pop-quizzes than we expected. Every spare min ute, English was crammed into us... We have had bake sales, Games Day at Halloween, vearbook, and soon we will be stars one week (in the musical) and slaves the next (on Slave Day)! Mrs. A. was driven to distraction by George's laughing fits.. Mr. T. had a bad experience when, trying to get the girls, Craig and Rich squirted him in the face with a water-weenie.. With all these memories, good and bad, we leave you, with our thanks.

CLASS HISTORY
(teachers' version)
MISS ROOT found it "quite mind-boggling" to have four Davids in her class...Craig was introduced to her when he was a month old; hearing she was going to be his first grade teach er, he let out a large scream...She remembers Sean hitting his classmates to get attention — at that time he didn't know any English...All in all, she sums up, "I do have to say you were certainly a high-spirited class!" MISS SCHWARZ looks back on our field trips. Leeanne's father took us to the Post Office and later to the airport to see how mail is handled...At the Stanford Museumt, David 0. went "gaga" over the mummies...After one of two trips to SAGA, we had a barbecue and a soccer game (with Mrs. Harvey and herself as the captains, of course)...George was one of the babies in Free to be You and M e . As MRS. DOCTER recalls it, Craig was sick every Monday and Friday...The four Davids were the loudest members of the class. For every word that Julie spoke, she would name its part of speech...John wrote so big that it took only five of his sen tences to fill a page...Melanie hated chapel...Whenever Mrs. D. turned around, she would step on Becky, who always stood directly behind her. MRS. LANDRETH will never forget the movie and filming over and over and over again. "We went through six camera men and had to work even after g r a d u a t i o n ! . S T A N remembers a blasting radio in the middle of the night at Inverness (Rich and Nat were nabbed for that)...Suki and Sanne filled out a teacher evaluation chart and gave Mrs. L. all A's except in neatness (C)...Her favorite thing was our enthusiasm. "Every day was memorable," says MRS. WESTMORELAND. "I remember when Joy joined your class and when Carolina, Sanne, and Allan left. During the year you enjoyed comic books, Vans, hair clips, Pac-Man games, Garfield, and playing tricks (the clothes hanging!). You also enjoyed speaking out in class! I'll always remember your incredible energy. I was exhausted! You were certainly foff the wall'!" MRS. LITTLE thought we were exuberant, noisy, full of ideas, cheerful, and delightful. "Remember the time we had a water fight for a jar full of marbles? This class really enjoys eating! We had so much food it took the entire period just to eat the food! We had enough for an army! The water fight was fun, too!" MRS. ALTROCCHI is still complaining that someone kept taking her glasses all year! She remembers chatty people whose desks she'd have to keep changing to the front of the room, sleepy people sprawling all over their desks (surely they hadn't been up late watching t.v.), polite people who held the door, and generous paople who brought her M&M's! She thanks you for being good sports at Jones Gulch, the wonderful readings at Christmas, putting on Games Day in the rain, the terrific Indian reports, and all the other memories she has to enjoy.

"We're from the planet Earth," I replied coolly. "How did you get here?" "What are these machines?" "Why are you here?" Tommy was a sad little boy of fourteen. He lived with his mom and dad in the beautiful town of Remington, New Orleans. He was sad because he was blind since he was born; so practically his whole life was just plain miserable. One day it was a very sad day for Tommy. He was walking home from school and the policeman wasn't there to walk him across the street. Then suddenly a drunk driver was so drunk that he zigzagged on the street. Tommy didn't hear the car yet, but as soon as he did, the car was coming on like a cannon ball. Tommy was halfway across the street when suddenly, wham!, the driver hit Tommy and he fell down. Before he knew it he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. When his parents found out, they rushed to the hospital. When the doctor came out of the emergency roon, the doctor looked at the floor. Tommy's father went up to the doctor and asked him how his son was. The doctor looked at him and said, "He is all right except his legs are paralyzed." Tommy's mother started crying even harder. Tommy's parents went home and let Tommy rest. When they got home, the father told the mother that Tommy could come home in three weeks. Three weeks passed and Tommy came home. Everybody was happy to see him, but not as much, because of his legs. Then when the family's friends found out, they decided to earn money so he could be helped by physical therapy. The plan worked like a charm; Tommy's legs were getting stronger every day. When Chrsitmas came, he was walking again. He was joyful when he felt his legs moving. He didn't care about his blindness anymore because all he wanted was to walk once again. George Del Rio

What Can You Buy for a Nickel?
One day a crippled orphan named Joe was walking along a wharf. The wharf was old and shabby, but Joe loved it. Joe would go there every morning and watch the boats come in and out of the harbor. On his way to the wharf, Joe found a nickel. When Joe got to his favorite place, he saw a man drowning a cat. He asked the man if he could buy the cat for a nickel. The man thought that was a fair price and sold it to him. Joe was so happy to have a companion that he screamed 1ike a hyena. Joe named his cat Nickel and took him to the wharf every morning before school. When Joe came home from school one day, his best friend Jake told him that his cat had been hit by a truck and taken to the dump. Joe quickly got up on his crutches and left for the dump. When he got there he called, "Nickel, Nickel, come here kitty." He heard a quiet, "meow, meow" on the other side of the junk pile. He hobbled over to his cat and saw that almost all his bones were broken. Joe said, "Nickel, what are we going to do? I am crippled, so I can not carry you. Your legs are all broken, so you cannot walk." The night began to get cold, so Joe gave Nickel his coat. Joe saw a helicopter fly overhead and Joe waved his crutches. The helicopter pilot saw him and landed. Joe talked to the driver and he took Joe and Nickel back to the orphanage. Joe became very close friends with the helicopter driver's kid, Moe. Moe wanted to have Joe over for Christmas and his parents agreed. Joe was very excited to be going to their mansion for Christmas. Joe then thought of something. What would he give them for Christmas? After a, while he thought he would give Moe Nickel. He would give M o e 1s mother help around the house and Moe's father help with his bills, since he was a wiz in math. There was a lovely tree with presents all around it. He got lots of things he wanted, but at the end he found out the biggest surprise of all; they had adopted him. They loved their presents but their favorite was to live with Joe the rest of their lives. Joe knew he was the happiest kid in town. He did not know what to say so Joe just yelled out,"Ha11e 1uia!" Joe, Moe, his mother and father then lived happily ever after. Richard Ziegler
The Frankfurt Zoo
Sometimes dark places can mislead you. One time in the Frankfurt Zoo, there was a large dark room that contained all the animals that come out at night. As my parents and I walked into the room, we saw a sign that said, "Watch out for pickpockets!" We all laughed. I was walking next to my dad, I thought, until I stuck my hand in his pocket. The man grabbed my hand and yelled, "Thief!" I said I was sorry, I had thought he was my father. Darkness can get you into big trouble sometimes. Da v i d Os b o r n e
My Day in the Ocean
The sun glared brightly in the warm, early morning, a wonderful day for snorkling. After putting on my swimming suit, I walked down to the beach with my snorkle gear. The hot sand tickled my feet. 1 lay down in the cold, ocean water and slid on my fins and mask. Into the water 1 dove and swam way out. Under the water 1 saw a small silver and blue steak shoot by my face. A little deeper down, I spied some similar things except they were blue and yellow. There must have been about twenty of them. Then all of a sudden, a thin, black, snakelike object came out of a cave. It glowed. I swam out of there as fast as I could; that was enough swimming for one day.

A Flying Fin in Florida
As I was swimming in the Gulf, I glanced toward the horizon and saw a creature with a giant fin leaping around the area where I was body surfing. Julie, my friend, and I screamed and rushed for shore. With all my might, I dashed towards Mrs A., gasping! Spitting out what I had to say, I choked, "Did you see...." "Yes!" she exclaimed, "aren't those graceful dolphins?" I couldn't stop laughing! That whole time Julie and I thought we had seen a shark. I surely learned something; sharks don't leap in the air! The Boogie Man
When 1 was little, my sisters used to tell me that there was a Boogie Man under my bed. I believed them. They told me that he was green, had a pot belly, and had big bulging eyes that looked as if they were going to pop out. I was scared even to take my leg out from under the covers and put it by the bottom of my bed. I wouldn't even look under the bed. Now I know that it was all a trick. Come to think of it, he did look a little bit like E.T. Stacy Beugen

Experience
At the age of five, I was playing at the beach, building a sandcastle. Suddenly, 1 saw a little creature tottering over my foot into my sandcastle. It just waddled along; I don'.t. think .it even noticed me. Frantically I started digging, looking for this monstrous little thing. I was almost heels over head, since I had dug so far. Then a huge wave crept up behind me. 1 suspected it wouldn't reach me. My mind told me 1 was wrong when I looked between my legs. The wave battered me over, making me flip two or three times. My whole body trembled with fear. I had gobbled down about a gallon of salt water. I have found that my suspicions are not always right and I must ^ore I react to something. Joy Torbett
My Change
An experience in my life which made me more courageous occurred when I was on a cruise in Mexico. My sister and I went onto the beach to go para-sailing. Para-sailing is when a parachute is tied onto you and you are pulled into the air by a speedboat. My sister said she would try it, so up she went. As I saw her sailing, I said to myself, "Craig, you've got to be crazy to do that." When my sister got down she said, "Craig, it's your turn to go up." After all of the arguing, she persuaded me to do it. When I took off, I almost fell off and I was very scared. But after I got used to it I loved it. I then realized after the flight, that, if I had walked onto that ship without going up, I would never have forgiven myself.

Becoming Independent
There were two experiences in my life that made me change and realize I could do things independently. First of all when I was seven I started going to camp. My family would drive me up to Fresno. The camp was called River Way Ranch Camp. That's when I started to realize that I could be independent. I'd be at camp for two weeks all by myself. To me that was a long time. Two years later, I went to Kennolyn Camp. It's really fun there. The first year I only wanted to go for two weeks. I really enjoyed it there , so the next year I went for three weeks. The other experience happened quite recently. It was when I went skiing by myself. I went with some of my mom's friends. I like doing things by myself because it makes me feel good about myself. What an Adventure
"Ahhh," I screamed as the water splashed up over the catamaran. "When will we get to the beach?" "In about five minutes," Larry, the head of the boat, replied. The water splashed over and under the net I was sitting on. Larry threw the anchor down and about ten kids jumped down from the boat to the beach. I grabbed my boogie board and threw it down. Next, I jumped into the clear blue water. As 1 was carried by the waves to the shore, I saw these nude people lying on the beach next to us. Everyone was staring at them but they didn't seem to mind. A huge wave was coming so I jumped up and rode on top of it. Looking down, I saw about ten kids being pulled under the wave. Hearing screams, I felt glad that I was on top of the wave instead of unde r it. After a few good rides, disaster struck! I didn't go out far enough and the wave pulled me under. I did back flips, front flips, and every other direction of flips. It seemed as though I was under for twenty minutes, but 1 guess I wasn't.1 As I was flipping round and round 1 thought, "Oh no! What if I die? Bye Mom! Bye Dad!" Finally I struggled out of the water, about one foot away from the lava rocks! Water was in my nose, in my eyes, in my mouth, and sand was in my bathing suit. Finding my boogie board, I made my way back to the boat. As soon as I was on, 1 grabbed a towel. Some boys were looking through the binoculars at the naked people, but they said they couldn't see anything because the boat was bouncing too much. The naked people waved anyway. As I was drinking my coke and munching on some chips, I thought, "What an adventure!" Suki Larson
On The Rocks
With the feeling that at any moment a wave could overwhelm me, I leapt up to the ledge with room to spare, but not before I was drenched. Scrambling over the rocks was easy at first. After I had pulled my brother off the rocks, I began to climb back down but slipped. I desparately'grabbed at the stone. Feeling that I couldn't go on any longer, I tried to jump back to,/the ledge, but I landed in a receding wave. I pulled myself up and walked painfully back to the car where I slept for an hour. The day made me black and blue. Caven Ke ith
A Scary Experience
The day that changed me forever started bright and cheery. The waves were high and the sand seemed to be alive. Children were happily running and grownups were trying to get a sun tan. I ran towards the water and plunged in. It was pretty shallow so I swam out in deeper water, not knowing I was being tugged farther and farther out. I decided to swim back in, but found myself being caught in a rip tide. I screamed, "Help!" At that second a thought flashed through my mind. I might drown. I glanced up and saw a life guard coming to my rescue. From that day on, I have always been a little nervous about the ocean. 1 have learned my lesson: not to go too far out when there is a rip tide. The Person Who Changed My Life
When I was young, about four or five years ago, I was very bored, but something happened to me that changed my life. The only time I wasn't bored was when I played with all my friends or with my parents. I was very attached to my mom and my dad. When I went to birthday parties, I wanted my mom to come with me. I can remember when I mourned for someone to play with. Even though I had three big sisters, 1 wanted a little brother too. My big sisters were too interested in boys, their friends, and were always riding horses. The only time I spent with them was when I rode with them. Other times they would squinch their eyes, lift half their lips and turn their heads slowly in the other direction. One day I found that my mom and my dad were going to Europe and India for their business. I was sad, not only that they were leaving, but that I had to stay with my bratty sisters. Before they left I told them, as a little joke, to bring me back a brother. They laughed and kissed us all goodbye. I can also remember when I was in the back seat of our BMW with Sally, my biggest sister, driving. We drove up to the airport and I saw this wierd-1ooking kid with my mom and my dad. They introduced us to him. I had never dreamed that they would really have gotten me a little brother. His arrival made a big change for me, because now I have someone to play with and he is so nice. We all decided on the name Andy after my big cousin. We all love him very much. Stacy Beugen

G r e a t e s t Dad
My dad is the absolute greatest dad, boy oh boy. His second name is "Encouraging"! For example, at a swim meet he gets more excited than I do. He rubs my shoulders and tells me exactly what to do. By the end of the race he's sweating and ready to collapse. But there is also a totally different side to him. This is what he calls his personal side. Every morning he closes the door and meditates. Once, by accident I forgot he wanted to be alone and I came bursting into the room. What a mistake. He was in the middle of going, "0 m m m m m ." I fell over and almost laughed my head off! He didn't think it was funny at all and shouted, "Get out, right this second!" I sprinted out. That was the last time I ever burst into my dad's room, This was a rare incident,: for my dad rarely yells at me. But on a scale of one to ten I rate him a hundred! Johanna Dav is

cO A Senior Citizen with a Lot of Class
0 Most people picture grandmothers as 1ittfeold 1ad res w a 1king down the streets with canes and such, but not my grandmother. She wears nice suits and she travels all over the place, flying first class when she rides on planes. She goes to Europe, Palm Springs, Carmel, and millions of other locations. Once she went to Jamaica and she brought with her scripts and homemade props from the play 'lCamelot". She along with some friends rewrote lyrics for it and acted the play out with the lyrics they had written. Now, I definitely wouldn't think of a senior citizen doing that! Bubajune had no hair on top of his head, and he also had a bunch of age wrinkles. He walked with one of those walkers. Bubajune acted sick when he knew he was fine. For example, he would pretend he was dying, when he just got out of the hospital, and they said he was fine. He wasn't playful, and he wouldn't tell jokes. Bubajune was always thinking of himself, never of other people. He felt sad because he knew his life was at an end. He also felt very lonely. He made me feel like it's not fun to be old. My Good Ol d Gr a ndmot he r
My grandmother, a short, healthy lady in her mid-sixties, is very stubborn. She teaches yoga in Taiwan and she is one of the best in the field. When she isn't teaching yoga she is thinking about people who have been treating her badly and also about how to get revenge. When my mother goes back to Taiwan, she tries to prove to my grandmother that those people aren't trying to treat her badly, but once my grandmother gets a thought, she believes in that thought until the person does something else to offend her. Even though she is a bit unreasonable, 1 wouldn't trade her for anything in the world because she is the most lovable grandmother on Earth. Sean Huang
The Little Portable Bowling Ball Have you ever seen anyone as chubby and round and jolly as my little friend Zac? He dresses up just with any clothes. It doesn't even matter if they're new. When we meet, he comes to me with jeans or a t-shirt, even if we go to a restaurant. He has jolly feelings; you can tell by the look in his eyes and by his laugh, vyh ic h seems funny to me. His looks aren't very charming, but he acts as if he enjoys life. Sometimes when Igo to his house, we go in his room, and it looks as though a wild boar lived there. When we go to amusement parks or movies, our parents say,"Where did Zac go?" Of course I don't know, so we all look around for him. About ten minutes later, we find each other again. Somewhere, sometime, he will almost be 1ike a true brother to me because he goes with me and 1 like him very much. George Del Rio
A Double Atti tude
During a riding lesson my trainer, instead of saying nicely, "Elbows back, Shelley," screams, "Get those darn elbows back, now!" Well, she makes you put your elbows back all right; but as a result you develop a certain amount of respect for her. You use this when you dream up things to scream back at her, but you never do. Quite on the contrary, as soon as you aren't on a horse she's as nice as can be. She calls us by the first syllable of our names, for example. Heather is Heath, Nancy is Nanc, and I'm Shell. She plays around with us, jokes with us, and really just acts like one of us. Con stance is a friend, a trainer, and sometimes a pain. All in all, she has a great influence on my life. Shelley

Melanie
My friend is always extremely agreeable to everyone. Her sweetness shows powerfully when you ask her a question such as, "Can I borrow your pen?" She'll reply simply, "Yes." Sometimes she is like a shadow that you'd look at and it would run away. Her hair is long and blond and she's thin and has light blue eyes. She reminds me of a shy, sweet, bright spring flower.
Amazing Escape Artists
Some animals are escape artists. One of these brilliant animals is my dog, Baron. Amazingly he escaped from our basement to our lawn by knocking off the screen to our one and one-half foot crawl space and clambering through it. Another example is Mack, Baron's father. He would pull the lock button on the door, push it open, and find his master. Impatience must run in the family, or else maybe it's just a bad case of claustrophobia. My hamster, Clarence, found some strange way to open the cage door and break out. I really don't know how she did it. Obviously, people are certainly not the only escape artists. Suki Larson
y -o The Colorful Bi rd We clambered down the concrete stairs, running toward the fas cinating stores ahead of us. After we had ransacked every store of interest and spent every last cent, we headed for the elevated parking lot where our car was patiently waiting for us. Passing a bright green lawn, we saw a man grasping a piece of string that seemed to vanish as it worked its way to the clouds. Looking up, full of curiosity, we saw a simply extravagant kite, dipping in the afternoon breeze. It circled every which way, showing the technique of the flyer. It was made of many bright, bold colors and looked exactly like a gigantic bird, except for the color of course. Enchanted, we watched it for a full ten minutes, flying so close to people's heads that they ducked before it soared upward again only to dive down once more. Finally, we mounted the steps slowly, each of us playing back in our minds the flight we had just witnessed. Shelley

The Moon
Darkness envelopes the sky but the stars shimmer like little pin-pricks. The earth becomes a large blue-green gem floating in the void. The drab, grey surroundings encompass everything to the horizon. Ridges of great craters rise from the immense plane. A meteor skims toward the moon and wedges itself into the craggy surface. But it makes no sound on impact. There is only silence everywhere.
Nat Orman
Escape As the warm water rose up on the soft grainy sand, an interesting sensation flooded my body. Then a wave crashed on a rock dispersing what felt like a tiny drizzle. My mind wandered thinking about all the creatures dwelling on the ocean floor. Plunging in the water, a large shark lurked above me. I darted out of the water, and within two seconds I was free from danger. Becky Davidow
V ideo The silent machine was waiting for me among all the rest. The screen shone with the demonstration of the game as I moved slowly toward it. I climbed in the apparatus and placed myself on the seat. I shoved the quarters in the gadget, and 1 hoped I was ready for the difficult challenge. My space ship appeared on the screen as I wildly gripped the controls. My gamepiece bounced off the edge of the screen as I dodged the enemy missiles. Flashes of bright light appeared around me as my ship exploded. My game came to an end, and 1 dug into my pocket for another quarter. Nat Orman

As I Sink in the Quicksand As I sink in the quicksand, my life flashes before me. A world of friends, brother, sister, mother and father. My whole life appears before me. I wish to pull out of the yellow-brown quicksand, I wish to rise. I wish to live, like a regular human, Through happy and joyous life. 1 wish to flop out, like a happy, fast fish. Oh, my life, oh, my hopes. Oh, to rise like a helicopter into a wonderful sky. But alas, I can't get out. John Kinkead
As I Run Through the Jungle As I run through the jungle, a new world appears before me. A world of shapes, circles, crescents, moons and ovals. A whole paradise appears before me. I Wa l k on t h e Beach
As I walk on the beach, tiny grains of sand flow through my toes. A beach of many animals, big, small, and tiny, tiny. This whole world of beautiful beach surrounds me. I want to dive into the sand, like a petite crab. 1 want to crawl under the sand. I wish to glide like a bird of the sky, Through the breeze and the fog. I want to trot like the Sandpipers along the coast. Oh, my wants and, my wishes. Oh, to dive into the sand, like a crab.' Oh, to glide through the skies like a bird. Oh, to trot 1ike a Sandpiper on the edge of the sea. But, I am on 1y me. Jess ica Collins
As I Walk Through the Puddles As I walk through the puddles a new sensation appears to me. A town of colors, white grey, and black. This whole scene - appears to me. 1 wish to fly like a seagull in the powdered blue sky. I wish to soar. I wish to gallop swiftly 1ike a palomino pony, Through the rough wind of the evening. 1 wish to walk like a sly cat, Oh, my thoughts, oh my dreaming. But come to think of it, I am still me. Just looking in a puddle. Leeanne Merritt
As I Look Through the Glass As I look through the musty glass, cold on my face I press my nose against it. I see inside beautiful colors of purple, gleaming blue and shining red. There are the most elegant clothes: Beautiful hats with vails on top, Pure white blouses with lace on the trimming. Oh, but 1 wish I had enough money* To buy these glamorous garments. In my dreams, in my wishes, 1 hope to become, in my next life, The wealthiest woman of England. Stacy Beugen

Why do we hate bumblebees? They only sting to protect, Any honey they collect. We take their honey and their wax, Which to make, they break their backs.
