I looked at it and it said, "Deaf Kate: I miss you all. I am happy where I am. Patricia". I remembered- that she was dead. I thought that it was her spirit.

THE SECRET CAVE BY CLINT CODDINGTON One day I was walking down the beach. I looked in a cave and decided to go in. The cave went back about thirty feet. I found a secret panel. It opened. I went in and I saw a treasure chest. I took it out of the secret hiding place. All of a sudden some bars came down and trapped me. I dug a hole and got out. Two men had guns and they shot me. My file was a strong manganese. The bullets hit the file and I ran to my car and escaped.

CAVE OF THE ONE EYED CAT

BY CHRISTOPHER JACK

Once I was walking on a mountain when suddenly I fell into a trap door. I landed in a cave. I saw a cat that had only one eye. I screamed and the cat heard me. I saw this red thing come out of his eye and it hit some stalagmites and they fell around me so it was like being in a small jail. I said, "Let me out". The cat said, "No". I said, "You can talk"? He said, "Yes". We quickly became friends. Two days later he let me out. I come and visit him every year. 2-1

THE STORY OF A GHOST BY PAUL KAISER One day my mom went to town for five hours and I was all alone. I went to an old shack. I saw a ghost but I was brave and I tried to hit him but my hand went right through him. He started to chase me. He jumped on me but he went right through me. I was scared so I went home. My mom was there and I told her that this was the only time I had been scared. She didn't believe me.

THE HAUNTED HOUSE

BY MARIE-CHRISTINE NAPIER

Once upon a time there was a haunted house and I bought it by mistake. One day when I was moving out of my old house and I was sleeping at the new house for the first time, I had started to go to sleep when I heard this sound, ouououououolI!11 I quickly woke up my mommy and daddy. They said that the noise was just the wind. Then I went back to bed. Then I saw the ghost and made friends with it. Soon I heard another noise that sounded like this-creeeeeck!!I! I knew that the noise was just the floor boards. Then I heard shrieking from my sisters room. I got up and looked through the key hole. It wasn't my sister who was shrieking, it was a goblin. My sister was hitting it over the head with a rolling pin. A few days later my family figured out that it was a haunted house. The next day we woke up early and got all the ghosts and goblins out of the house.

THE SAND PEOPLE

BY JAKE MOSHER

One day my friends and I were playing at the beach. Suddenly a sandy hand reached up and grabbed my friend and pulled him under and he didn't come back up. My friend and I were next and I knew it. Then the hand got both of us. I blacked out. The next thing I knew I was in a net and it was sticky and my hand got stuck just when I was about to rip it apart. Then I saw my first friend that went under. He was in a trance. Then I saw a person and he was turned into a sand man. I was mad. I ripped the net and swam but it was very hard to swim. Then I saw my other friend. I swam over to him. Then we got the other friend and we swam into a cave and swam out of the cave on the other side and we were then swimming safely on our way home.

THE MYSTERY OF THE GHOST BY MARTIN HENRIKSEN Once I went to a castle and I went inside. I looked into the closet. There was a skunk so I plugged my nose and went upstairs. I went into a bedroom and got a sword. Also while I was in the bedroom I saw a ghost. The ghost saw that I had a sword so he pressed a button and walked through the wall. I got some matches. I saw the ghost and I took off his hat. He grabbed me and took me to a cave. I would light matches and he would blow them out. Then the ghost took me on a ship in the Pacific Ocean and threw me overboard. My Dad came along and got me out of the water.

MY^HANDBALL THAT COULD TALK BY GABRIELA HESS One day when my sister had a friend over they wanted to play handball. They asked if they could use my handball and I said that they could. They took my ball and I had not noticed that my sister had a needle in her hand. They started to play before I could stop them. Suddenly the ball went "BOOM". I ran to tell my mom while my sister and her friend stood there and giggled. When my mom came outside she said that my sister would have to buy me a new ball and I could chose the ball. We all got into the car and went to the sport store. We bought a new ball with my sister's money. Then my sister and her friend started to play handball again. When my sister hit the ball, the ball said "Ouch, that hurt". I started to laugh because my sister did not read on the side of the ball that told what kind of ball it was. About one year ago the ball ran away.

THE WILD HORSE

BY STEPHANIE MILLER

Once I went to a place where they had a lot of horses and I saw one that I really liked but I did not want to tell my mom or dad so we just went home. I never forgot that horse. The next day I had lots of trouble in school because all I could think about was that nice pretty horse. I got bad grades on my homework and the work we did at school. Then the d§y came when we got our report cards. I did not even want to look at mine, especially when my mom and dad looked at it. Then I could not believe what happened. They did not get mad at all. I found out that they knew that I wanted that pretty horse. The next day we went back to the place where they had so many horses and I got the horse that I wanted. I did not know that it was so wild. I rode the horse home while my dad, mom, and sister rode home in the car. After they left in the car, the horse really started to get wild and he went really fast and far, far away. Then I said in a loud voice to turnaround and the horse turned around and went all the way home. My mom and dad asked me where I had been and I said, "Just riding the horse home".

THE SWAMP PEOPLE'S REVENGE BY MATTHEW GERMINO One day I went to Hawaii with my mom and dad and my brother and my sister. I was swimming and I saw a big green sea weed with a big horn. It looked like he had grown another horn. He grabbed me and knocked me out. He took me to Alcatraz. Two days later I got out and signaled a plane. It came to pick me up and a swamp person took me somewhere I had never been before. I found a gun and shot him. There were more swamp people in the plane. I shot most of them but they threw me into the water. I got away safely. My mom asked where I had been and I did not answer. When I went to my room, I had a beard. I think that was the funest adventure.

NOISES IN THE HOUSE BY KRISTIN BRANIFF Once I was alone at home and I heard something go creak, crack and I did not know what to do because there wasn't anybody else at home. I called my neighbors but nobody answered. I ran over to their house. The door was wide open. I went inside. I heard the same noise that I heard when I was at my house. I heard it again and again. I said to myself, "Somebody is following me". I ran back home and found out that it was only the window and the wind was blowing outside. The curtains were swaying back and forth. A couple of minutes later, my mom and dad came home and I told them never to leave me alone with the window open. 2-5

THE HUNT FOR THE TREASURE OF THE ABORIGINES BY JAMIE KEENAN Once I was an archeologist and my assignment was to get a head piece and it was the Aborigines God and it weighed 20 pounds. It was pure gold. In order to get this head piece you would have to have this gold dust that had these special crystals in it. So I started at Chicago. I landed in Australia and so I went into this jungle and then into the cave where this treasure V£s located. I had this head piece in my very own hands. I was walking out of the jungle and then the piece slipped out of my hands and fell into the water. I dove in and yet the head piece had sunk too fast. This guy took me in this bubble and then we went into the water and found the head piece. Then we went back to Chicago.

AJHANDWRITING LESSON BY MARK REYNOLDS Once I saw a handwriting teacher and I asked him if I could have a hand writing lesson and he said, "Sure". So while I was handwriting a hand reached up and grabbed me. He put a scarf around me and we went into a big cave. It was flooded. I had to spend the night there and in the morning, he let me go. When I woke up I realized it was only a dream.

HIKING IN THE SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS BY DAVID WOOD One day I went cliff hiking with my dad in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I was first. I climbed up a mountain and I looked up and I saw a hawk swooping down. I stepped back without looking and fell down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down. I yelled, "Heeeellllllppp". My dad jumped down and found me. We forgot our rope from the top so we could not get out. Luckily I brought a 26 shooter handgun so we went through tunnels and we found a locked door. I shot it down and we saw a monster. We had a fight and I won. My dad and I went and found a passage out and never again did we go cliff hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

THE FAIRY AND THE MAGIC STICK BY MAGAN COLLINS One day I went outside and picked up a stick and a fairy appeared. I picked up the stick and the fairy turned into a frog. I dropped the stick and she turned back and I said, "Hello, what is your name". She said, "Mary". She said, "What is your name". I said, "Megan". Then she disaDpeared and I fainted. When I woke up I said, "What happened". I went inside and I told my mom and she did not believe me. She did not see the fairy and I didn't either. I yelled, "Mary", and she came and I introduced her to my mother. My mom fainted and when she woke up she said, "What happened". My mother remembered and she went inside. Then I started to play and the fairy appeared again. Mary started to play with me and we lived happily ever after.

THE MOUNTAINS Mountains are rough and very beautiful and extremely high. They also have cliffs and pastures. When you visit you can see streams and waterfalls from the last snow. Animals are found in mountains. When hunters see cats they shoot them. When they see horses they take them to a barn. Most parts of the mountains are rocky and some parts can be steep and some can be smooth. I'd rather ride a horse on Ashley Brooks

THE FOOTBALL GAME Tom and I were going to a football game. We arrived at two o'clock. We were going to see the A9ers play the Rams. First we got some food. Then we wen£ to our seats. The ASers were kicking off to the Rams. The Rams ran the ball back to the twenty yard line. The Rams often came on to the field. The quarterback threw the ball. Hicks intercepted the ball and made a touchdown. The A9ers kicked off. The Rams ran the ball back. The Rams kicked off. They fumbled the ball. The i*9ers ran for a touchdown. The Rams were still ahead by three points. The 49ers had the ball on their one yard line wjth five seconds left in the game. Montana spotted Solomon. Solomon caught the ball and ran and made a touchdown. The A9ers won. Brian Moran

DESCRIPTION OF THE SEA The sea is a very wonderful place, Where waves move with beauty and grace, And the beach with all that sand, It is the divider between the sea and the land.

C*tc^

This is a good description, but it needs to be better When you go sailing you need good weather, And surfing is fun, very fun, Plus you can lie on the beach in the sun. You can have lunch if you're in a good mood, But don't get the sand all over your food, After that you can play around, And when you want to you can go back to town. Kobie Crawford

BOOGIE BOARDS! Iggie and I were digging in the sand on the beach. Iggie's shovel hit something hard. I began to help Iggie dig. We began to see something green and blue. It was a boogie board. We took it out of the sand. Under that there was a yellow and orange one! We took that out too. Under that there was a piece of paper. We unfolded it. It was very hard to read, because the water probably had faded it. Iggie and I figured it out. It said: Dear Gregg and Judy, I hope you enjoy your boogie boards. When I was eight I enjoyed them. I hope you do too. Sincerely, Your oldest cousin Linda We didn't care a bit about the letter, we just went boogie boarding. We had fun. Suzanne Bryan

MOUNTAINS Mountains are high, and sometimes they are rocky. Some tall mountains are so tall their tops are above the clouds. Some mountains have evergreen trees on them. The higher mountains have snow on them the whole year, even in the summer. Sam Ki tamura

Htwol TRAPPED A monster came up and grabbed us and went back under the sand. It took us to an undergroud mansion. When we were inside we tried to escape, but we were trapped! We saw eight passageways. Five was my lucky number so we took the fifth one. There was a long flight of stairs. At the bottom of the stairs there was a dead end. Suddenly a trap door came down and again we were trapped. On the dead end wall there were hieroglyphics. They read, "There is a secret panel on the wall." I found a loose brick and pulled it out. ! peeked through the hole and saw a mad scientist making some kind of formula. We made a bigger hole and climbed through. We saw Danny and Fargo. I whistled and they saw me. When the mad scientist left we walked over to Danny. The scientist left the secret formula inside the room. Tom read on the paper that it was a formula for Frosted Flakes. We saw three skateboards and each took one and the formula and coasted out the door. 1 saw a monster with no head. I tripped on a skull. The skull had a diamond eye and a crystal eye. I saw a battle axe, a spear and a ball and chain on the wall. Each of us took a weapon. Fargo barked. The headless monster turned towards us. 1 picked up the spear and threw it at his heart. It hit! I opened the trap door. There was a long passageway. At the end we found a time machine. We found out that we had gone back in time. We also figured out that the formula was not for Kelloggs Frosted Cornflakes, but the formula for the time machine. Danny quickly set the dial for 1982 and put the formula in. the time machine worked. We were glad to be home.

UNKNOWN Early one dark rainy evening, my brother Ace and I were hurrying home to a late supper. We were hastening past a wooden shack in which lived Skipper Moses. All of a sudden we noticed a tiny red flame lapping at the roof of the shack. I ran over to investigate. The house was on fire. I heard a cry for help. I ran in to save Skipper, but it was just his parrot. I grabbed him and ran out. Fire trucks pulled in and Ace told them what happened. The firemen put the fire out. When we got home my mom was mad and our supper was cold. Steve Weibel

(A Song) That skateboard went down the street, It went about forty feet. When I caught up with it, It started to have a fit. When I started home, It wanted to go to Rome. When we got there, We saw a mare. It vented to go to my house. Then we saw a mouse And he pointed home from Rome. Dan Mosher

EIGHT O'CLOCK FIRE

Early one dark and rainy evening my brother Nick and I were hurrying home to a late' supper. We were hastening past a wooden shack in which lived Skipper Moses. All of a sudden we noticed a tiny red flame lapping the roof of the shack. I ran over to the shack and told Nick to call the fire department, i ran inside and heard Skipper yell. I got him outside and in two minutes all the shack fell to the ground.

SKATEBOARD PRO Jaws and I were digging in the sand. Jaw's claws hit something hard. He started to bark. I ran over. Jaws dug up a skateboard. It was red and whi te. It was getting late so I rode my new skateboard home with Jaws. The next day I rode my skateboard all day because it was summer vacation. I worked for some money to buy a helmet, knee pads and gloves. Our swimming pool was empty. I rode my skateboard in it and I was very good. A few weeks later I read in the paper that there was going to be a skate boarding contest in five days. I decided to enter. The day of the contest arrived. We got there early so I could warm up. The competition looked tough, but at the end I came in first place. Steve Weibel

CHANGING HISTORY Jim and I were digging in the sand on the beach. Jim's shovel hit something hard. It was a wooden ladder! We kept digging and it became a hollow tunnel! We entered the tunnel and walked for two hours. Soon we heard a voice saying, "We will kill Drake in the morning," and then the voice began to fade away. Jim said, "Drake? Who is Drake?" "Drake is a famous explorer," I said. We kept walking. "What happened to Drake?",said Jim. "He got killed in 1596. Stupid," I said. "Oh!" said Jim. "Is it almost morning?" asked Jim. "According to your info, morning is right now," I said. "Then don't you think we should help Drake," said Jim. "How can we we help Drake, when he is already dead," I said. "Oh" said Jim. Suddenly two men came in view. "Hide!" I said. When they came, one of them pushed a red button on the side of the tunnel. A big piece of the tunnel slid back, and we jumped on the two men and knocked them out. When we got inside the secret entrance we saw a map, which showed the whole passage where we were. And we also found a little cross and beside it was tiny writing saying EXECUTION ROOM. "I think that is where Drake was killed," Jim said. "Right beside that map." Suddenly Jim said, "According to this map we are right under Brazil!" I said, "Let's get going." We started off. When we were at the end of the tunnel we saw the Straits of Magellan. Then we saw a strange thing. We realized that when Drake and Magellan went through the Straits of Magellan they were ambushed and their boats confiscated. Fake replicas of their boats and a fake Drake and a fake Magellan returned to their countries. We had discovered the hoax, But would anyone believe us? Ben Johnston

THE SEA I went to the beach one day and saw a beautiful sight. The waves were crashing and the clouds were were blowing across the sky like racing horses. Above the sound of the surf I could hear the wild cry of the beautiful white wheel ing seagulls. I love the ocean and all the wonderful sounds and smells that are at the beach. Cass Cornish

We were hastening past a wooden shack in which lived Skipper Moses. All of a sudden we noticed a tiny red flame lapping the roof of the shack. We quickly knocked on the door. THE FIRE

Early one dark and rainy evening, my brother Daniel and I were hurrying home to a late supper. We were hastening past a wooden shack in which Skipper Moses lived. All of a sudden we noticed a tiny red flame lapping the roof of the shack. Suddenly there was a scream and the flame got bigger and so did the scream, but then a person jumped out of the window and was on fire and fell to the ground. Daniel and I went to the pond and got a bucket of water. We found the bucket outside of the shack. My brother got water for the fire, then a person with a gun came and shot my brother. I was in the bushes over by the pond, when I heard the gun. I stayed hidden. Then quietly I went up behind him and put my arm around his neck and choked him. I ran away carrying Skipper Moses. The next day Daniel and Skipper Moses were in coffins and we went to church. I was in the newspaper. Alex Steinhart

HAS SPRING SPRUNG? There once was a little rabbit and she wanted tohfefp someone. One day, on February first, her mother told her. "Tomorow will be Groundhog Day. If the groundhog sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't, spring will come now." "Mommy," the little rabbit said, "I want to make the groundhog not see,his shadow." Little Rabbit went up to bed to think this over. "I think I'll put my umbrella over the groundhog's hole," she thought. Little Rabbit woke before the sun came up. She took her umbrella out of the closet and went outside. The sun was just about to rise when Little Rabbit reached the groundhog's hole. She quickly opened the umbrella and put it over the hole. "M-m-m," said a voice, "Has spring sprung? Or has spring come?" "Yes it has, Mr. Groundhog," Little Rabbit said. "Good, because I like it that way." Mr. Groundhog, went back in his hole and Little Rabbit said, "Spring has sprung." Betsy Gi11i1and

THE M OUNTAINS

Mountains are high. I like the highest ones the best. Sometimes it smells nice right before it rains. When you see waterfalls, it makes you want to go and slide down them. The' echo sounds funny. The purple, yellow and orange wild flowers smell good in the summer. It's fun to watch the deer run around and find new patches of grass right before spring. Babette Matheu

MY FIRST YEAR AT P.B.S. Hello, my name is Ben. I want to tell about my first year at P.B.S When I came in the door. I Saw lots of new faces were looking at me. I felt weird. The teacher said, "Are you Ben or ah...Benjamin?" "Yes," said my Mother. "Welcome to third grade," said my teacher. My teacher asked Sam to show me the boundaries. A week later I learned everyone's name and I started to make friends. I told Alex that I use to live in the middle of Antarctica and that I flew to Mt. Erebus when it erupted last year. Antarctica is 5,500,000 square miles and America is 3,600,000 square miles. Antarctica is one of the oldest continents and it is now all ice and snow. A long time ago it use to be a tropical forest. I came to America because I got bored of the coldness and I got tired of Antarctica. One thing I hated was leaving my poor pet polar bea behind. My best friend was NOO-NOO. He lived on an iceberg. "Wow," said Alex, "I want to tell the other kids." He ran off as I said, "But I haven't finished my story." Ben Johnson

TRAPPED Tom and Bill were on their summer vacation. They had decided to spend part of their vacation driving around the country. One day, after they set up camp in the woods, Tom decided to do a little exploring. He had hardly left camp, however, when he felt the ground give way beneath him. He was sinking. "Bill, help me!?" Tom called. " I'm trapped in quicksand!" Bill came running right away. He reached out as far as he could, but it wasn't far enough. The only way to reach TOm would be to go into the quicksand, but then both of them would be trapped. "I'm going back to camp to get the rope!" Bill said. "Spread your arms and legs out and try not to move. That way you won't sink so fast." Something grabbed Tom and pulled him under. "Help!" Tom screamed. The thing pulled Tom all the way down through the quicksand. He closed his eyes. When Tom opened his eyes he was sitting in a dark room. He was tied up. Something that didn't have any eyes, or any nose, or any mouth, and glowed in the darkness of the room, was right in front of hi It was slowly moving nearer to him. "No! Help! Don't come near!" Tom shouted. But the thing kept coming closer. Then he remembered the pocket knife his father had given him for his birthday. He got it out of his pocket and held it out. The thing started to run away. "Good," Tom thought. Now for the escape. He had to cut the rope, but he did that fine, because the knots weren't very good and the rope was poor. He saw a trapdoor and went through it. So it was that he came out in a storage shed. When Tom went out of the shed he saw Bill looking for him. "I'm back," Tom said, "Alive and well! Betsy Gi11iland

MARTIAN FROM OUTER SPACE One day a space ship came from space and landed in someone's pool. A person came out and all he saw was some bubbles, and then he went back in the house. The next day the Martian went to a museum and scared everyone away. He saw some shrunken heads and broke the glass box and started eating one of the shrunken heads. Suddenly the brain popped out. A few minutes later he started assculpture of himself out of the brain, but every few seconds blood dri pped out. That night he left the sculpture at the museum and departed for the planet X to see his mother, father, brother, aunt, uncle, grandmother and grandfather to tell them about his journey. MY DESCRIPTION OF THE OCEAN

When I think of the ocean I think of a beautiful day with a blue sky, sandy beach and a dark blue ocean in Portugal. The grey and white seagulls are dipping into the water for big fish and their screeching echoes in the air. I like looking for shells that are in good condition.. You can find cork off the beaches in Portugal around Eastertime. Scott Saywel1

AIRFORCE:.

W.W.I I

It was early morning when I left the Airforce Academy to go to the Airforce. I would be at the bottom in Squadron #12, ninth in command from High Halk, our leader. When I got there, a pilot showed me around the place. “That's the cafeteria over to the left and the airport to the right. We walked for a while; then he said, “That's your quarters, a-a-a...“ “Geoffrey," I said. “Okay, Geoffrey, you go to the cafeteria for breakfast and find me." He then left me. The next morning, 1 got dressed and headed for the cafeteria as the pilot had said. Then the pilot intercepted me. “My name is Steve," “Hey! you were in my class!" “Your right!" Then we started chattering like we knew each other all our life. He then led me to a plane after eating breakfast. “This one's yours." I got in and took off. “Squadron #12, this is High Halk. Some enemies are on our tails, proceed to attack." ’Right then he was cut off. Suddenly, it seemed from nowhere an enemy started to chase me. A dog fight! 1 knew it! He chased me for hours, shooting all the time. Finally, he shot me down I died. (I'm reciting this from heaven.) Geoffrey Tuff1i

THE SEA When I think of the sea 1 think of water splashing up on the shore. I think of rocky cliffs and sea plants floating around the ocean. The sun shines on the shore with all the seashells. YES AND NO Once upon a time there lived a man called Elmer Fudd. He thought that no meant yes and yes meant no. When he went to restaurants he said, "May I please have a piece of pie?" The waitress said, "Yes!" He thought she meant no so he just left. Once Elmer came into a restaurant and the waitress said, "Are you ready to order, sir?" "Why no." This waitress knew his type and took the rest of his order. What would you like to eat, sir7" Some cherry pie, please." The waitress said, "Anything else?" "Yes, thank you." The waitress told him his problem and now he knows that no didn't mean yes and yes didn't mean no.

When the coach got to the stables the driver asked for four new horses. So I took his four horses around back and came back with the same horses and said, "Here you are, Senor, four new horses." One day, Mrs. Pac Man told Pac Man to sell the cow. He came upon a man who traded him power pills for the cow. So he went home and showed his mom and his mom threw them out the window. Pretty soon they grew into a gigantic pill stalk up to the clouds. Pac Man climbed up. He found a castle and saw a big ghost, so he ran inside and took a cherry. He knew how to carve things out of wood. Sometimes he carved things and gave them to me. But sometimes he coughed. One time he shcjld me his basement. It was very dark, very large, and very frightening. When we got deep into the basement he showed me a big chest. It was surrounded by emeralds and rubies. I asked, "Where's the key to it?" "You will find out later," the old man said. Then, one time, the old man got sick. He coughed and said,"Come here. I'm going to give you the key." "That is too precious for me to have, I said. The old man continued, "You were so interested inknfijging where it was, and you can have all that you find in the chest so have it I It is part of my will." Then I took the key. He started coughing. Right in front of my eyes he died. I ran out of his room and out of the hospital. I ran home. I cried a little bit. When I was home I thought about the chest in the basement and I decided to go there. I sort of believed in goblins and mummies so I took along my knife and gun. When I came to the old man's house I went into the basement. I had no idea what path we had taken when the old man had brought me here, so I Just took wild guesses where to go. Suddenly I heard a lot of moans and groans. Then I saw in the darkness — a mummyl I took out my 45 auto matic pistol and fired three shots. That didn't destroy it. Then I took my knife and threw it. I made a direct hit and white puss spurted out. I quickly took the knife out. I said to myself, "It's pretty weird, killing something that isn't even alive in the first place." Then, I saw some stairs, but they didn't go anywherel I kept on searching. I saw a huge safe door. It looked pretty old. I couldn't open it, so I took a big stick and pried it open. I saw the large chest with rubies and emeralds on it as I saw it last. With the key, I opened it and saw rubies, diamonds, emeralds, gold necklaces, bracelets, and a lot of Jewelry. Now I am a very rich man.

At school Buffy told everyone not to come to her party and to go skiing instead. "Does anyone want to share?" asked the teacher. Buffy raised her hand. "Come up, Buffy," said the teacher. "All you girls, don't you dare come to my birthday party on Friday!" shouted Buffy. "We will!" shouted all the girls. "That's not very nice, Buffy," said her teacher. At the party, Buffy was really mad that everyone had come. "I hate birthday parties!" said Buffy. "We all put our money together to buy you this big present shouted Gina, Rosie, Carina, (with her decorated cast on), Anna Nancy, Clara, Betsy, and Kathy. "I hate presents," said Buffy in her crankiest voice, "but I'll open it anyway." Buffy opened the present and it was a book called . . . How to Be a Nice Person. "Thanks," said Buffy, embarrassed, n a - . t

San Juan Bautista October 2, 1839 Dear Aunt Sylvia, Today, Mother. Father, and I arrived by stagecoach at San Juan Bautista. We*re staying at the Plaza Hotel and will be here for a few days to rest up. My room is quite pretty and is over looking the Plaza. To the left I can see the Mission, which is built in an ML" shape — the monastery wing and the mission church. The three bells in the bell tower sounded very lovely when they rang for evening mass. When we arrived we found out that tomorrow is fiesta day. I am very excited about it. Mother promised that I could wear the red silk dress you made me. I will wear my white boots with many buttons and my white lace gloves. My dear Aunt Sylvia, I must go down to dinner now, but I will continue my letter after fiesta day. October 4, 1839 Aunt Sylvia, yesterday was great funI The people started arriving around 10:30 a.m.. The ladies and girls looked absolutely beautifulI There were lace, silk, and cotton dresses, each looking as pretty as the other. The food was excellent — roasted ham and turkey, beef cooked over an open fire, different kinds of freshly baked bread, and for dessert I had apple pie. We danced and sang. I met many nice children my age. Late in the afternoon, there was a bear and bull fight. Who do you think won the fight? Of course it was the bull because the bear was tied up. The poor thing stood up on its hind legs and prompt ly was gored by the bull. I think it was sad. In the evening there was a small earthquake. It really scared me. Did you know the mission is built on top of the San Andreas Fault? We are leaving tomorrow. There are so many more things to see, so I must go now. I will write again soon. Love from your niece,

On Feb. 9, the fourth grade at P.B.S. had a slight problem. Gem, Justin, and Michele came in from recess and the chalk started to write words on the board. Then everyone walked in from recess. We all sat down and all of a sudden Kathryn's desk ran out of the room. After that everything went wild. The desks were running after the students and the clothes were flying everywhere! Then everything went out the door and up to the Kindergarten playground. The desks were on the horses, on the swings, and on the merry-go-round. We were watching the desks on the swings because every time the desks went forward books would fly out. We had to yell at the desks to get down. Ever since that day we have chained our desks to the floor!

One day I was walking home from school. I came to a pond and I saw a duck quacking his loudest. It sounded like a horn. I tried to help him and see what was the matter with him hut I couldn’t reach him because he was too far away. I dove into the pond and I got him. I saw his foot and it was all bleeding. There was a very deep cut on his foot. I decided to take him home My mother said, "What happened to that duck?" "I don't know," I said. I asked my mom if she would patch it up and she did* Then I asked my mom if I could keep the duck. My mother said ”0. K." My mother said that I had to think up a name for him, but the duck was so ugly that I couldn't think up a name for him — so I Just call him The Ugly Duckling.

There once was a bionic banana named Fred Fruit. No fruit in Fruitville would try him except Big Fruit who didn't know any better. Big Fruit had a disease called Fruitasia which is a dis ease of the forest which causes food to go rotten. Dr. Jamieson, who was studying the disease, decided Fred should go to Big Fruit's house in the forest and investigate how Big Fruit was contaminated. Should he succeed he would receive a medal, Fred headed for the forest with his gun, unaware of the danger around him. Suddenly shots were fired and Just missed him I Soon shots were coming from everywhere but mostly from a hidden hut. He Jumped into the hut and Immediately heard a countdown: three, two He quickly decided to get out. As he dived out, the hut blew up. He ran through the forest with trees falling on Fred finally made it back to the lab. Dr. Jamieson came in and fired & gun at Fred. Fred chased the doctor into a control ^ room. Now Fred realized that Dr. Jamieson was the source of theffl trouble. Fred chased the doctor down into the Bart station and U along the train tracks. Dr. Jamieson fired and ran. Fred fired his dart gun and hit the doctor. Fred then went to the telephone and called the ambulance ^ The police arrived find thanked Fred. They had been trying to find out who the mad scientist was for twenty yearsl ired was given a trophy and was happily reunited with his Fred

f\ LeTreR. To T^e Governor

March 11, 1821

Dear Governor of Alta California, I am a good citizen and a Catholic, so please give me the land shown on the map my mapper made. My land is in a great val ley and is in a wooded area. I'm sure you have never explored this lovely place. I will build my house of wood, skins, tree bark, and rocks. I plan to have 300 cattle on my rancho, over 100 horses, and about 300 goats, sheep, and small snimals. I have 36 vaqueros. My brand is RJ. My vaqueros work hard and like their work. They love fiestas and Rodeo Day. They also love our great food. On the new rancho we will grow cherries, oranges, blackberries, strawberries, pears, plums, and peaches. We will have many things to trade with the Yankee ships, like hides, tallow, ropes, and fruit. That's how we will get boots, coffee, tea, spices, and chocolate, that I love. We will give many parties — about every two days. Our guests will have so much fun I They will dance like "wild" and pig out on on all the good food, best of all hot chocolate. At our main party, once a year, we will Jimp in the lake, play hide and go seek, Jumprope, play baseball and football. At our rodeos we will also lasso calves and bulls, brand cAlves, and watch the fight between the grizzly bear and the bull. The grizzly bear usually wins. We wear Mexican and Spanish hats, shirts, pants made out of hides and sometimes we wear Indian headbands. I am looking forward to having a good time at my new Rancho Yosemite. Sincerely

I have a desk, a dirty, sturdy desk that has a million holes. Gosh, it must be at least a hundred years oldl The edges have rubbed-off paint, but I guess it doesn't matter because most of the desks are like that. But something is weird about this old thing. I opened my desk to get my history — my desk squeaks, "It's a mysteryl" I opened my desk to get a book — my desk says, "Watch out I It's a crook!" I opened my desk to get my math — my desk says, "Close it! I'm taking a bath!" D-ding! D-dingl It's time to come in.

Now it's time to play.

Ding!

Ding!

Shoot!

Time for a spelling test. I opened my desk to get paper for the test and my desk shouted, "Will you be quiet? I'm trying to rest!* Soon, it was time to clean our desks and my desk shouted, "I have a headache!" Then, at the end of the year, I opened my desk and it said, "Thank goodness you won't be sitting here next year!"

One day, my friend and I were playing in the dirt at school and we decided to slide in the dust. We took turns sliding and right before^ I was going to slide I saw a yellow rock. At the first I thought it was gold, but then I thought, "What a silly ideaJ" Just then I was Interrupted from my thoughts by my friend* "What are you staring at?" he asked. "Look at that yellow rock!"

I went to pick it up. "It's heavy!"

We went into the classroom with the nugget and looked in our history books. It told how to test it to see if it was real gold. IT WAS!!!1!! Then we told our teacher and she told the whole school at the amphitheater! The news spread and soon the teachers had to rotate watching the area where the gold was. In a few months there were so many people here we had to move the school some where else _away_ from the gold . ^ * ! ^

§ ocX*S Hello. I m Lady Socks, a very lovable and spoiled cat. I have always been, and will always be, the center of attention. I've a very beautiful gray coat with white boots AND I have a gold, pearl and diamond collar! I have three rooms of my own, (but I mostly use the whole mansion). My private yard, made especially for me, is five acres of a true catnip paradise! Well, the whole thing started Christmas morning. My mis tress got this, this THING — I think it is a dog because she'd been moaning for one for days. (What a thing to m«ttn about. Yuck!) I decided this place wasn't big enough for the two of us, so I started doing everything to make him uncomfortable. Por example, I clawed all the down out of his pillows and tipped over his dog dish at our repasts. After a long day of pranks, I decided to take a little rest, As I made myself comfortable, who should come toward me and lie down next to my bed but THAT THING! NGl Maybe he wasn't going to be so bad after all. 1

T Ke KrrunoJl Oyer was an aminal. He was afraid of the dark. Oyer called himself a Something but his mother said he was an aminal. He got really mad when his mother said he was an aminal. Oyer's mother said one day, "Oyer, I am going to the store. Stay here!" Oyer agreed. Oyer made some lunch and then went out and played near his backyard cave. Oyer thought he saw an animal. Oyer went into the cave and made the animal out of clay. (He loved to play with clay!) When his mother came home from the store he showed her the animal. "Mother," he said, "this is the animal I saw then I was out playing." His mother said that it couldn't be because he was an aminal himself. This made Oyer very mad! Oyer started to scream. His mother calmed him down and said, "Oyer, can't you control yourself?" Oyer said, "NO!" Oyer was so mad he went into his room and cried. He cried until supper. After supper he cried himself to sleep. In the morning he felt fine — he was very happy. He played with his clay all day. He was the happiest aminal in the Aminal World!

One day, when I was making some adobe for the mission, I heard a man shout, "Earthquake!" I didn't know what that meant so I kept working. Then I heard that word again and I thought I would go investigate. Suddenly, I felt something moving under me. I was scared! I ran to my house in the village to get something to fight with because I thought it was an animal. When I got there the ground was really shaking. I saw a big split in the dirt' and I thought the world was breaking in half! There was one big shake — stopped and it was all over. I got up feeling dizzy. that shaking?" I asked him.

THE HAIR DRYER THAT DEFIED THE LAW OF GRAVITY One day I was in the World Trade Center building in New York. I was eating my breakfast that tasted like the air in the holes of Swiss cheese. I was on the 10?th floor and took a look at the view. All of a sudden, I saw a flying hair dryer.' It was the biggest gold hair dryer I had ever seen. Besides that, it was’a G.E.: So I got on my bike and went home to tell my parents about it. They didn’t believe me. The next day I took them there to show them. It wasn't there! My mom had to go to the bathroom, so she did. In less than 10 seconds she ran out of the ladies’ bathroom and told us that there was a lady who had just been attacked by a flying hair dryer.'! By C k P A f r THE TALKING DOG Last week I saw a dog walking down the street. It was a Golden Retriever. I saw that he didn't have a license, so I took him home, and when I shut the door he jumped at me and threw me to the ground. He- also licked my face. I saw that he was happy. When he got up, I started to get up, too. He said to me, "Oh, thank you, master.” I looked at him. I thought he had talked to me, but it must have been my imagination. He talked to me again. I searched all around the room, but there was no tape recorder or a record player. The only thing that was left was the radio, so I went to see if the radio was on. If I didn't talk or all the rest of the stuff, then the only thing that was left was the dog. I looked at him, and he said, "What are you searching for?" I said,"N-n-n-nothing!" I suddenly thought - if this dog can talk, I could make a show and get money to get to the top of a big business. I left the house with my dog. I left to go see the man who makes the big shows. I told him about my talking dog. He said, "A what? A talking dog?!" He didn't believe me, so I brought the dog in and told him to talk. He went "bow wow" like an ordinary dog! I was surprised. The man kicked me out along with my dog. When the man shut the door, the dog talked. He said to me, "How about a doggy burger?" I suddenly understood that he would only talk to me. Well, that was the end of the whole thing. I said to myself,"Well, that's show biz!"

WANDOLF'S GREAT ADVENTURE Once upon a time, there was a very nice leprechaun who would always give whoever he met some of his gold. One day he was walking in the woods when he saw a troll. The troll was walking toward the leprechaun- whose name was Wandolf -

8.

but the troll did not see him. The leprechaun was scared that the troll had seen him and was going to eat him. He then remembered his magic wand...which he had left at home. Wandolf jumped behind a tree and jumped onto some loose boards which broke and sent him falling, falling, falling... until suddenly, .boing.' boing.' boing! Wandolf fell onto a mattress which he thought was at least seven feet thick. He tried to look around and thought he saw the outline of a door, so he walked towards it. When he touched it, it slowly opened. He looked through the doorway and saw a tiny glint of light. He started walking down the hallway and the glint of light grew and grew. He kept walking until he came to a door which he opened, and then he saw his dear friend, Hobart. Hobart was the nicest gnome anyone could know (he was also the richest). Hobart was very startled, and he ran into his room, took off his mask, and out came the same troll whom Wandolf had seen before. Wandolf saw the troll when he first came out of the room. Wandolf started to run to the door leading outside. He got to the door a split second before the troll did. But Wandolf made it!

A WORDLY WISE STORY One balmy day Lu Lu was doing her paper route. She glanced at the paper and saw the headlines that said "DRUG ABUSE". In school she had talked about what violent things it can do to your brain, and they had talked about how it could make you sullen. She thought of the robust work it would take to stop taking drugs. She passed the temple that was decked with many signs that said the same thing as the headlines. When she got home she heard a clamor in the kitchen. In the kitchen she saw her brother, Leo. He had been on drugs for some time. Even though he was off them now, the stigma of being a drug addict was still with him. It was like carrying a hump on his back. He knew that he had deviated from the laws of society. He did it because he thought it was smart. Now Lu Lu's family tries to enrich him with other ideas. Moral = Drugs are dumb'.'I By

A SHIP TO SPAIN A ship in route to Spain had abused the Aztecs in Mexico and loaded gold from the temples to enrich the king of Spain. At the start the weather was balmy, but the sullen sky turned into a violent storm. The sailors clamored on deck to deal with the robust task of trimming the sails. A violent wave struck the ship and blew it off course. The seaman with a hump on his back, which was considered a stigma, became the hero as he grabbed the wheel and brought the ship back on course. If he hadn't grabbed the wheel, the ship would have had to deviate from its direction.

WORDLY WISE STORY One balmy day on the deck of my house I heard a loud clamor in a temple. I went in and saw a lady abusing her child. I went up to her and said, "Why are you abusing your child?" She said, "I'm not." I said, "Don't deviate from the truth, lady." She said, "You better get out of here, kid, or I'll get violent with you, too." I looked at my notebook and gave her ten stigmas. The child did not look robust. He looked sullen. I took the child back on my two-humped camel. I thought I took the right route, but I ended up at an orphanage, so I gave the child to them because they always try to enrich the children's lives. By p A W B X F R E N C H Y C Z D A E

MYSTICAL BREEZE With your horse you may fly On his back you may lie As you spring over mountain and lake His spirit you must not break For if you do, you might find yourself On mountain grass and dew I Swiftly he flies with you on his back You drop the crop, for him you couldn't wack Now a rainbow you see Suddenly your horse begins to talk, "Isn't it pretty?" says he. Now you're climbing altitude How wonderful is your mood 1 Suddenly you're among Clouds Below you see the trees in crowds Isn't it wonderful to be with your horse On a warm winter's breeze's course I By * M O R N I N G A N D NIGHT In the morning the birds start singing And the bells start ringing. The sun is gleaming over the dewy grass It looks as pretty as glass. The sun starts rising higher and higher And the warmth feels like fire. Then it sinks over the edge Then you know it's going to be night. When the birds stop their flight Then the warmth goes away So you don't feel so gay. HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1982

Even though many of us haven't been at P.B.S. for over three years, all of us have some great memories which we want to share. In kindergarten, everyone was new, but Mrs. Lyman was nice to us all; she was known as Mrs. Lyman - the Pieman. Although Gaylen isn't here any more, everyone remembers first grade when Gaylen threw Matt into the trash can. On the first day of that year, Steve Ki rchner asked Miss Root every half hour, "When do we go home?" In second grade, Miss Schwarz's dog Tasha would come to school every Wednesday, much to our delight. We also had lots of music. A shoe-sized hole in the wall got Christian in a lot of trouble! As third graders, Mrs. Monnot always threatened to put our desks in the bathroom or put diapers on us if we kept asking to go to the bathroom. In fourth grade, many new people joined our class. We made the movie and went to Inverness, where a "guerrilla war" was waged between boys and girls to see who could scare the other. Alden's and Derry's "mission impossible" was the worst of our missions, while Susie Kemp's, made out of shredded wheat, was outstand ing. The following year, Christian got in trouble again for making a "fresh" remark to Mrs. Westmoreland even though his intentions were innocent. We also went to Outdoor Education and made a counselor cry! After we got busted by another counselor, she said, "My_lkids are all in b e d b u t they were really all outside, running around ha 1f-drcssea. Becky ate a pencil, and Chris Forter and Conan dissected a frog, which was partly stolen by Gem. In sixth grade, Mrs. Altrocchi calls us "good guys" and "bad guys"; the "good guys" must have won out because we finally started getting the Clean Room Award. When Kevin, playing "Frisbee" with a large board, knocked out a window, he was rather embarrassed. Trying to imitate Becky's taste for new foods, Cari ate a bee. All these memories show that our class has class!

DON'T TRUST WEATHER REPORTS I nolonger trust weather reports. Once while listening to K.O.M.E. on the radio, my favorite song was interrupted by a weather report that said, 1'We inter rupt this broadcast to advise you that it's very possible that there might be an earthquake. If so, it would probably take place between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m." I shut the radio off and I swiftly ran out of my room into the kitchen where my mom was cooking with the oven. I told her the news and at first she thought I was joking, but then she turned the radio on and realized I was telling the truth. She jumped, ran to the phone and called my dad at work. He drove right home. When he got home, we all helped my mom put all the things away that were breakable. We did everything else that had to be done. Then we all went under a separate desk. We stayed under the desk for hours, waiting for the earthquake. It never came. All of us were so mad, because we had put all the fragile things away and it pressured all of us so much that there was going to be an earthquake. This proves my title about not trusting weather reports. Matt Derry

A BAD CHARACTER It was December 21, when it happened. I was only four years old at the time. Mom was to leave in five minutes, and Mike was about to go out. I hated the babysitter. She smelled like ten skunks, and was so fat she once got caught in the door. I was glad she got stuck, but we eventually got her out. Mom had just said goodbye to me, but I hated the babysitter so much I had a fit. Finally I went out of my room and found what I wanted. The Superglue! I went in my room and poured the bottle of Superglue on the door and slammed it. It took me a while to close, I thought, but it sure did work. Soon I started yelling. I said to her, "You one million pound, ugly elephant, why did you lock me in here?" She waddled to my door. I didn't see, but heard, her come to my door. All of a sudden my door fell down, and I remember asking her how she did it. I never got an answer, but she probably just put her finger on it. Then she said, "I saved you from being locked in here, so §imme some ice cream. Lots of it." I got her the ice cream, and "lots of it", as ahe said. I didn't know what to do in my room, and I couldn't do anything in privacy because my door was on my floor. I couldn't believe what I had done then. I asked her if she wanted some more ice cream. I gave her almost a million scoops of chocolate and I smashed into it a sleeping pill, while she wasn't looking, and soon she fell asleep. Since she was lying down on the couch on her back, the cat played on the trampoline, her stomach. I am no longer laughing because I got into so much trouble. Gillian E 11ington

THE TROUBLEMAKING ROCKS It was in the summer, and my friend and I were walking around in my backyard in Hawaii, with nothing to do. Then my friend threw a rock into a puddle. This gave me a good idea. I told him what I was thinking and he thought it was great, too. So we walked over to our next door neighbors' fence. Then I said, "Let's see who can make the biggest splash and the loudest noise by throwing a rock into their pool." So far my friend was the champ. Just then we spotted a huge rock that would be perfect for splashes, just beyond our neighbors' fence. As we started to climb over the fence, our neighbors came outside to see what was going on. We quickly hopped off the fence and ran back to my room. After a half hour, we decided to go get the huge rock, and a couple of others, for tomorrow. The next day we went outside to see our rockpile and started throwing them into his pool. This time he caught us throwing them. Then he asked me, "Jon, why are you throwing rocks into my pool?" "Because I like to watch them sink," I answered. "If you throw one more rock in here, you'll have to help me fish them out," he said angri1y . Just as he went inside, I threw the big rock from yesterday. He came out and said, "Hop.over the fence and help me get them out." I slowly climbed over the fence and helped him get the rocks out and stack them in his garage. And from then on, I never threw rocks in someone else's pool just because I liked to watch them sink. WHY I USED TO DISLIKE SPINACH I remember once when we grew spinach in our garden; it was spring, and we didn't know what else we were growing. We had to dig up the ground which was long and dull work; the only excitement was finding a couple of squirming earth worms. We had bought two cherry trees and some strawberry plants and some little packages of spinach seeds. After we had planted the trees and the strawberry plants, we decided to plant the spinach. We dug up the little rows of dirt and poked holes in the ground with our fingers. We planted the seeds and waited a couple of weeks. Soon my mom came into the kitchen and announced that we were going to have spinach, and we were going to eat outside on the picnic table. I said, "Yipee!" Half an hour later, we all sat down to dinner, I took my fork and poked it into the spinach, ready to take a mouthful. My loaded fork'was about to go into my mouth when I saw a big green caterpillar stuck on the tip of my fork. I shuddered at the thought of almost eating a caterpillar. Then I looked at my brother who was already halfway done and had probably already eaten a caterpillar. My mom has never planted spinach again. As for me, I only eat frozen spinach. Chris Forter

FIRST GRADE FROLICS It was in first grade at the Selby Lane School. My teacher, Mrs. X*, was about as bad as the amount of turkeys eaten on Thanksgiving in the U.S. Our class wasn't exactly a class to take pride in, but it was a class to remember. I can remember the first day of school in that class. Our names were neatly taped to our little desks and the classroom was, all in all, pretty nice. Our teacher came in drinking her diet drink and at once I knew why she wasn't married. She had the meanest face you could think of with patches of blubber hanging from her chin. "Good morning, class," she recited to us. "Good morning," we said back to her. "I'm gonna have some rules for you if you're gonna be in my class," she wa rned. At once I thought it was the end of the world because with the way she looked, you could never know what those rules might be. She then listed them to us. "No eating in class," she began (l thought that was pretty funny because she was sitting there munching on a brownie). "Absolutely no talking and no going to the bathroom, OR ELSE..." (I was afraid one of those was coming up!) "Or else I will spank you with my yardstick." The yardstick, which sat next to the blackboard, looked ten feet long and five feet wide to a little first grader like myself, and during the rest of the year, I kept my mouth shut, didn't eat in class, and I never asked to go to the bathroom. But there was boy named Matt who really didn't care for Mrs. X's laws (either that or he had a very small bladder). He talked and actually did something that would get her mad. So one day, Mrs. X, with a diet 7 Up in her hand, spanked Matt on his bare bottom. I felt sorry for him, and so, whenever he talked, I quietly reminded him of his ruler experience. Well, Mrs. X, I guess, became aware of this and, while I was talking to him one day, she grabbed her ruler and waddled over to my desk. "Becky," she sounded 1ike a bug who had just swallowed a cow. "Are you ta1king?" I was so terrified of that big ruler that sort of hung in her hand that I didn't speak a word. She then put the yardstick up against my neck and spoke: "DON'T EVER TALK IN CLASS AGAIN!" And I decided from then on never to interfere with anyone's problems, no matter how sore their bottom is! *Name changed to protect the innocent. Becky Miller

A FUNNY EXPERIENCE Sometimes funny experiences happen to you, but the one I'm going to tell you about is the funniest of them all. I was walking down the street once and saw a most unusual sight. A black, ferocious dog was holding a leash attached to a man in a suit. I didn't believe my eyes, so I followed them to their house. I hid in the bushes, and through the window I saw the dog put a piece of chicken on a plate. He set it out on the porch with a glass of water. The man came running over to the plate, bent over, and started lapping up his food. The dog went in the house and left the man outside to eat. The dog poured some A1po in a bowl, sat down at the table, and started eating with a knife and fork. After I saw that much, I felt hungry, so I started home. I decided not to tell anyone about this because they might think I'm crazy. Conan Cheung

CHRISTINA'S ENCOUNTER (From Chr istina1s World) Christina stepped up the creepy stairs slowly. She thought this was the attic of the silent house. When she reached the attic, she saw a little light irr the corner of the room. A big chair with the back facing her blocked most of the light which came from a lamp on a little table in front of the chair. "Hello," she said in a meek voice, too afraid to see what was in the chair. "What are you doing here?" an old cracked voice asked from in front of the cha ir. "I was... well..." "Come here," said the voice. Christina walked over to the chair. She looked around it and there was an old man about seventy-five years old. "Who are you?" asked Christina in a meeker voice than before. "I am the owner of this house. Who are you?" said the man. "My name is Christina. I came to this house to see if anybody lived in it," Christina said, feeling braver. "Well then, the answer is yes," said the old man. " I live, eat, and sleep here." Christina looked around and saw that on the table there was a basket of fruit and some dried meat. Next to the chair was a pitcher of water. In the other corner of the attic was a bed. "You...you live here?!" Christina exclaimed. "Yes, and in peace and quiet. Now go; leave me alone," the old man scowled at Christina. She became uneasy. "Scat!" said the man. "SCAT!!" the man yelled aga in . When the man shouted this, Christina felt a chill go down her spine. "Yipe!" she said in a sudden scared voice and ran down the stairs of the attic and out of the old creepy house. Christina threw herself to the ground, sprawling awkwardly as she gazed back at the house. Everything was silent except for the soft whistle of the wind blowing gently against the long grass. The grass was turning brown, but it was still quite green. She glanced at the house. It was still; as still as a rock. Christina looked at the house closely. A suggestion of light could be seen at the top window. This, she thought, was from the oil lamp the old man had on the table. The house had a ladder going from the ground to the roof. An old run down gate ha 1f-surrounded the front. Near the end of the gate was a plow, the kind that goes on the end of a tractor. Leading up to the house was what seemed to be tracks from a vehicle. She looked at the house again and thought, "How could anybody live there?" Yet someone did live in the old shabby house. Christina gazed at the greenish blue sky as she thought of this. A PLANTATION OWNER'S LIFE I'm a plantation owner whose farmland has been turned into a battlefield. I live in Atlanta and five battles have been fought near my house. My cotton fields were covered with dreadful dead bodies, but I wasted two whole days and buried them. My cotton has been tramped down or blown up by cannonballs, and what little cotton I have left, people aren't buying. The smell of gunpowder looms around my house, giving a sense of destruction and death. The latest battle was fought a week ago. During that battle, a soldier shattered my window with an inaccurate shot. Also, a northern cannonball crashed through the slaves' rooms and killed three slaves. The remaining slaves became scared and two tried to escape. I grabbed my gun and furiously chased them. I shot at one and skillfully hit his leg. It slowed him down enough so that I could catch him. The other slave escaped. After this I could hardly take any more of this terrible war. I heard that General Sherman was coming towards Atlanta, destroying everything in his path. Hearing this news and being so mad about the war, 1 decided to move west towards Texas. I sold my slaves because I wouldn't need them any longer. Another family who felt the same as I did decided to travel with me. We fixed a broken-down wagon and started towards Texas. One of the children in the family caught a dreadful case of pneumonia and died. Finally we made it, after a month of hard traveling. It was almost imposs ible finding a job, but, as a last resort, I started raising a few cattle. My cattle-selling grew and soon I had a big business, I bought a comfortable twostory house and lived easily for the rest of my life. The Civil War was terrible but it resulted in me getting a big business. It had totally changed my life. Dave Weibel

A DAY ON THE MERRIMACK One sunny day in 1862, I was strolling along an Atlanta street when I saw people donating cloth. I wondered why. As I walked on a burly fellow stopped me and asked how old I was. I answered that I was eighteen. He said, "All men eighteen to thirty must serve on the C.S.S. Merrimack." I had no choice. The next morning I "signed in." The Merrimack was enormous but, to be precise, 262 feet. The armor was only four inches of grey iron. I was stationed at one of the twelve guns. Six men were stationed at a cannon. The Merrimack's ram was made out of wood. All morning we made preparations. The work was as hard as running ten miles with a cannon. We stored food, coal and wood, gun powder, and cannon balls. At last we pushed off! The thrill of everybody staring at me made me feel like a hero. I noticed the captain looking rather puzzled. I asked him what was on his mind. He said, "I've orders to break the Union blockade. The only thing that worries me is I don't know how much the Merrimack can take, and the only way to find out is by fighting a battle." I found out later that Jefferson Davis had pleaded with him to destroy the blockade. This was important because the South needed supplies badly. At last, after an hour of traveling, we reached the blockade. There was the U.S.S. Minnesota, our target! In between us and the Minnesota was the fearless, brave, but small Monitor. We opened fire on the Minnesota, and they returned our greeting. There was the Monitor, stuck in the middle. Then the "cheese box on a raft" fired on us. A hit! This went on for hours. Our captain decided to ram the Monitor even though our ram had broken off. Ramming didn't do very much. All of a sudden the Monitor fired and had a square hit on the cannon I was at. As I fell backwards, the cannon rolled back and crushed my leg. Those twentyfour hours were probably the most exciting hours of my life! Charles Tuff 1i

A UNION SOLDIER IN LOVE WITH A SOUTHERN BELLE April 30, 1861 Dear Donna Jean, Tomorrow we march to Bull Run. I am scared, but I know that you will be there to watch me. I cannot wait to see your long silky blond hair, your hazel eyes that dance in the sunl ight, and your lovely face. I miss you, for I have not seen you since December. I don't know how long the battle will go on, but I know it will not be1short. Well, my darling, General Gage wants us to get a good night's sleep. I love you. Your fiance, Jonathan I was right; the Battle of Bull Run was not short at all. Jackson was commanding the Confederate forces and they were very strong. People from Washington, D.C. came to the battle and ate picnic lunches as they watched on the sidelines. I saw Donna Jean. She smiled under her pink parasol with her white teeth glowing like fresh cut diamonds. Her father, the stern-faced man sitting next to her, shared the mutual feeling with my father that a Southern belle should not be engaged to a Northern soldier. Jackson's forces defeated us and, as we marched back to our camp, I ran to Donna Jean, gave her a kiss, and told her we would get married as soon as the war was over. Our camp life was not easy on us. When it rained, we had to pitch our tents, throw our stuff inside, dig a trench outside our tents so that the water would not get in them, and make our beds out of hay, leaves, and grain sacks with a blanket to use as our only source of warmth. We hardly ever saw good food and often we went hungry. By May, 1863, we had surrounded the city of Vicksburg which we bombarded for six weeks. We destroyed much of the city, and on July 7, 1863, the Confederate commander at Vicksburg surrendered to us. When General Lee attacked us at Bull Run for the second time, he and his troops defeated us. When Lee went north to Maryland, we were waiting with McClellan at Antietam. My friend Tim and I had been fighting side by side the whole war, but, during the battle, he was shot down beside me. I couldn't stand to see my best friend dying on the ground, so I tried to kill the man who had killed him and got him in the head. He got me in the leg and I fell to the ground. The nurses on the battlefield pulled me off the field and onto a stretcher. They told me that 1 would have to have my leg amputated. I told them before they could amputate my leg, I had to write Donna Jean. They gave me some paper and some thing to write with. Dear Donna Jean. My best friend was just shot down by a Confederate soldier. I tried to get the soldier that shot him, but he got me in the leg. I have to have my leg amputated but before it happens I had to write you. I am scared because I have heard the piercing shriek of a man having his leg amputated. I know now we will not get married, but I still love you. Love, Jonathan While Jonathan was on the operating table he fell into a severe state of shock and died later that night. When his lover, Donna Jean heard the news of his death, she vowed never to love again. She died an unhappy and longing-foi— love woman. Haven Lorenzini

THE WORST NIGHT OF MY LIFE My voice trembled as I called my dog, Nicolas, in for dinner, and he didrift come. It was dark out and I couldn't see the front gate. I was really scared. I went in and told my dad, and he told me to take a flashlight out and call him. I went out to the gate and flashed the light in the street. I saw a black figure crumpled in the middle of the street. It was Nicolas. I felt like killing the person that had hit him. I yelled for my dad. He came running as fast as he could and didn't see that the gate was closed. He smashed his head on the open people-gate and fell backwards. He quickly got up with a bloody mouthand a tooth falling out, and ran to where I was standing next to Nicolas. Icouldn't believe I saw him there. We carried Nicolas in and called our friends. They said they'd take my dad to the hospital and we'd take Nicolas to the emergency vet. When we got there, I said with a lump in my throat that he had been hit by a car and asked if he was still alive. The nurse's face seemed to say that he was dead, but she took him in and examined him and came back to say, "yes, he is...dead." I felt like killing myself instead because I was so upset. We left and went to the hospital. We found my dad and his lip was cut in three places and he had lost four teeth. He also had five cuts on the inside of his mouth. I felt guilty because I hadn't yelled to say the gate was closed. My mom called her friend and asked if they'd take us home, us meaning Gem and me. When my parents came home, it was 12:30 a.m. The next day we went to pick up Nicolas's body. We buried him by the fence. I felt so awful about his death. That day we went to get another cocker spaniel , but I'll never forget Nicolas. Tanya Arthur

BUNKBEDS DON'T EQUAL SPLIT CHINS One night while sleeping on my bunkbed, something happened. When I was six years old, my brother and I had a bunkbed. Morgan always slept on the top, and I slept on the bottom. One night, I asked my mother and father if I could sleep on the top, but my brother said, "He's going to fall off." I said, "No, I'm not." My mom and dad had said I wouldn't. The next morning, at 2:00 a.m., I fell off and split my chin open. I screamed and screamed, but Morgan didn't wake up. Soon my mom and dad came in and saw me dazed on the floor. My dad quickly took me to the doctor, and I got six stitches on my chin, The same morning, my brother asked me what had happened. I said guiltily, "I fell off the bunkbed." He said laughingly, "See, I told you, hee, ha, ha." After that, I never slept on the top of a bunkbed again. Chri st ian Schi11ing

A VERY UNCOMMON DAY One day when I was playing with my sister, Rebecca, I suddenly felt a cold shiver. I then asked my sister what she wanted for Christmas so I would forget about the cold shiver. She said, "I want a doll." I said, "Because you're my sister I'll get you a doll tomorrow." When I woke up in the morning, my sister was yelling, "Thank you! Thank you!" Finally, she ran into my friend Susie. I guess my mom had let her in. At last I got to ask my sister what she was yelling about. She said, "I got the doll that you promised me." "I didn't give you a doll," I said. "Then what is this?" She held up a brand new doll. "Did you go out last night and get it for me?" 1'No!" I yelled. "Then you're magic," she said. "So we don't start an argument, I'll show you that I'm not magic. Susie what do you want? Do you want a puppy?" "Please!" she said. "O.K., here it goes. First, what will I say?" "Say, please give my friend a black puppy," said Rebecca. So I said, "Please give my friend a black puppy." I saw three black puppies. I then guessed that I was magic. I tried again, but nothing happened. Then Susie said, "I think you had only three wishes." I tried again. Nothing happened, so I supposed Susie was right. That night I went to bed at 10:00. In the morning, I knew that I must have been dreaming.

THE "MESSY MAN" "Let's eat!" yelled Alex as my brother Ross and I ran outside to the table. Then Ross asked with an almost dangerous look in his eyes, "What does red and yellow make?" "Orange," I said puzzled. "What would I look like if I were orange?" "Dumb. Really dumb," Alex and I said giggling. Ross was pretty mad at us for laughing. His anger was obvious because his ears turned crimson. To prove to Alex and me that he wasn't joking, he dumped the ketchup and mustard on himself and stuck his tongue out at us. We were almost delirious by that time, so Ross mixed the red and yellow together, making an ugly orange. Then he smeared it all over his face and hair. Alex and I thought we were going to be sick if we saw that awful orange again, but Ross ran into the house to see what he looked like. By that time Alex and I had totally lost our appetites and were lying down, clutching our stomachs. Alex's mother made us clean Ross up. While Ross was singing "Orange. Yea!" Alex said "He's the messy man!" and he sure was. Ever since then, Ross has been known as the messy man. Karen Jacobson

A VERY FREAKY DAY I, Matilda Snurd, the snobbiest girl in my class, want to tell you about last Saturday, a very freaky day. After waking up and going down to eat break fast, I told my mom that I did not want to have scrambled eggs for breakfast and she said, "How did you know that I was going to fix scrambled eggs?!" After breakfast my brother and I were playing Fish, a card game, and whenever I asked for a card from his hand, he had it. Therefore, I won every game and he accused me of cheating. Then I realized something was extremely strange, something that had never happened to an ordinary, everyday person like me. Afterwards I called Mary Oggleward, my best friend, and told her all about it and she told me to come over and we could discuss it. When I got to her house, she grabbed me and pulled me toward her room. When Mary and I got settled down, we started to discuss the matter. I already knew what she was going to say since I could read her mind, so I answered without her even asking the question. She said, "Why did you answer? I didn't even ask the question." I told her that something had told me what her question was. Then Mary said, "Was that what you meant when you were talking to me on the phone?" I told her "Yes, but I don't like it one bit!!" Mary then went to look up mind-reading in the Encyclopedia. When she came back, she said, "It didn't say much, but it had the formula for a drink that would make it go away. Here it is. 2 chopped up lemons, 3 dips of horse-radish, k bottles of Peptobismol, clam juice. Shake well and cook for five minutes at 350°. Then to touch it up,grind up your dad's smelly socks, freeze for ten minutes at 15° below, take it out for three minutes, and drink." When I heard the formula, I really felt sick! But if it says that it works in the Encyclopedia, I thought I would try it. After making it and taking it out of the freezer for ten minutes, I drank it and went home. When I got home, I ate dinner as if nothing had happened, and the next morning I did not have my mind-reading ability anymore. Had it all been a dream? Nobody knows. Cristina FI

AN EMBARRASSING MOMENT Remembering my second dancing class always makes me blush. It started when my mother was dropping the girls from Ladera off at dancing school. I walked into the Circus Club and sat down next to Tanya and Gillian. Mr. and Mrs. Brady, our dancing school teachers, said, "Now, boys, go over and ask a girl to dance." All the boys ran over. Christian asked Becky to dance, Charles asked Cathy, Dave asked Haven, and Chris Alden asked Tanya. But before Dave asked Haven, Matt and Dave came over and asked me to dance at the same time. Then the embarrassing thing happened. Matt pulled me out of the second row of chairs and out onto the dancing floor, and I hit some of the chairs that almost fell over. All the other people in my class laughed at me. That was one of my most embarrassing moments at dancing school but I had many more. Susie Kemp

DEATH PLANET - CHAPTER I The dirty, aged freighter sliced through the endless darkness with its engines illuminating the space around it. Inside, a frantic pilot, Bill Hannel , was vainly trying to keep his crew calm and telling them to stop asking questions like, "Why are we here?" and, "Let us off, if you won't tell us why you kidnapped us!" He was beginning to think about ejecting them all from the torpedo tubes! I guess the crew had reason to be angry; after all, they had been told to meet at Landing Port forty-seven without even a vague hint of his motivation! Well, even tually he told them them they were going digging for luminous nitronium on the planet Ranet IV (which was a lie). He was not about to tell them about the treasure he hunted for, for so many years. He was the one who had hunted for it for thirteen years and he was determined to have it all for himself. Now they were calmer than before and were doing such things as playing cards and holo-chess and other recreations. After thirteen years, he had finally figured out the approximate location of the jewels. It was on Ranet IV, but he wasn't doing any nitronium digging! He wasn't a fool, as they were. He knew there wasn't an ounce of nitronium on the entire planet. It was a perfect plan. He would have them as his crew on his way there, but they wouldn't come back with him. They were almost there, and he could almost feel all those jewels in his hands. After about two hours, they reached the orangish-red planet and prepared to land. As soon as they landed, they grabbed their power shovels, ran out, and locked the door. He was suddenly struck with the realization that the planet was inhabited by hosti1e-1ooking robots coming directly at them! He had searched frantically through his faded vest before he realized he had left his keys in the ship and locked the door behind him... END OF CHAPTER I. Jason LeCount

THE STORY BEHIND CHRISTINA'S WORLD Christina slept and slept. She slept for hours. When she awoke, she was all alone. She saw the big, gray house in the far distance. She strained to move towards it; throwing herself desperately in its direction. Her paralyzed legs were useless. Her arms were pale, thin, and weak from being idle since her accident on horseback. She cried and screamed but no one was anywhere near. Christina was furious with herself. Why did she, once a champion jumper, now have to be confined to her own home and a wheelchair? Her legs were strips of spaghetti; her arms lifeless and weak. Her eyes were misty from her tears and everything blurred. The tall grass felt like wisps of hair swishing and swaying with the wind softly against her body. Through her blurred eyes, the house and barn were just patches of gray silhouetted against the dusk. The grass smelled like wheat in a warm oven and felt like thin rope. She sighted the tracks made by the wagon heading towards the house and stretched towards them. Her face was pale and rigid. Her smooth hair had almost entirely come out of her bun which was resting lightly on the back of her neck. Her silky dress felt hot against her body as she attempted to pull herself to the house. Her forehead was spotted with perspiration from her tremendous exertion. She felt lost in a sea of grass. Wind was rippling across the field making waves in the grass. She tried to call for help but her throat was parched from dust and the dry, hot air whipping at her. Christina had no choice but to lie, helpless, in the waving wheat fields hoping, praying that someone would rescue her before dawn. Cathy Docter

A MATTER OF SUNSHINE (From Chri sti na1s World)

v

"You go home tomorrow," said Aunt Melanie. "You have certainly changed us." "I guess I have," mumbled Christina. She looked around, at the bright curtains and rug. She remembered the dark, sober room she had entered, homesick and lonely, a year ago. "You've given us sunshine," said Uncle Walt. "I wish you could stay." "I think this house will shine by itself from now on," Christina said with a smile. She opened the door and walked outside. "Hello, Jim." she cried. "Hello, Springtime," replied the field hand. "Springtime" was his name for her. "You've given us sunshine," Uncle Walt had said. "I wish you could stay." "Have I really," wondered Christina aloud, now lying in the field. She turned around and looked. The house looked the same to her, as when she had been in that same field, a year ago, sobbing for home. "Nothing is different," she said, "It's all the same!" But in spite of herself, Christina knew she was wrong. But how? How could she be sunshine to these old people who lived in a tomb? What Christina did not know was that her cheery self was sunshine to the people around her. She did not realize that they looked forward to her, "Hello!" Suddenly she felt drawn to the old gray house; she suddenly liked its oldfashioned charm. "Why, I don't want to go! I like it here!" The dusty smell of the prairie made her wrinkle her nose as she said this, and she laughed, threw back her head and laughed. She looked at the azure sky and laughed, laughed harder and harder, and when she had finished she said, "Why, I do give them sunshine! I do!" The huge blue sky, the golden endless prairie, the gray, ancient house, the large sun, all seemed to zoom in on her, and she felt peaceful and happy. Slowly the aromatic smells of bread baking drifted to her; she leaped up and shouted, "Save some for me." Monica Rico

The Song She sat on her throne, a young queen, Listening to the bard sing of the treasures Gone from her race, And the firelight flickered on her face. The song took her away To lands of yore, Of warriors at whom dragons tore, Of maidens fair, sweet as you please, Of enchanted castles and trees. Her young sweet face, Her wondering mind, Thought of that boy, his determined quest, His wandering- He shall not rest! And, listening again, and listening long, To the melodious, "Warrior's Song." A SHORT DIARY OF A LADY DURING THE SEIGE OF VICKSBURG June 18, 1863 We are being attacked by Yankees! The fighting is commanded by Sherman and Grant. Sherman came down from the North after his march to Atlanta while Grant came up from the South. We have no way of getting supplies because the Mississippi River is controlled by the North and the Atlantic Ocean is blockaded by the North. We are doomed. June 22, 1863 The fighting is horrible. Vicksburg is in ruins. Many people have moved into caves in the sides of the city slopes. The food supply has gone down tremendously. We have only twenty loaves of bread, two bottles of milk, and four barrels of water for six people. I used to have eight family members except for my husband who is fighting in the Confederacy; my youngest son, Josiah, who was one, died of lack of milk since we could give only so little. Sha11 we 1ive? June 30, 1863 We are very low on food, for we have only twenty loaves of bread and two barrels of water. My children have all come down with the flu and will probably die. We have just about given up.

"One day I was outside milking my cows and giving hay to the horses and giving slop to the pigs. Every day I got up at 5:00 a.m. I was mad about how the North was acting. When I was young, my father told me never to speak to Northerners. He said they were no good. He never told me why. I imagined he was just jealous. Hea, hea, well!! Them was the good old days. When I got in the house, I sat down and read the newspaper. " Then all of a sudden, this boy shouted, 'Everybody evacuate, fast! Fast! Fast! Hurry.1 Everyone did so except me; I was brave. Whatever it was, I would stand up to it. So I went over there and asked the boy what wasgoing on. The boy said, 'It's Sherman, He plans to burn everything up!1 " 1 said, 'I'm staying right here and furthermore...' " The boy said, 'But, sir, do you know who Sherman is?' " 'Of course, but I said what I meant and that's final!1 " The next day I did my daily work and suddenly I heard the sound of soldiers; it was Sherman and his army. I went outside and said 'Stop!1 " He stopped. Then I looked at him and gave him one of my mean looks and growled. And him and his army took off and that's the whole story. Why are you frowning? Why, if you don't believe me, I... I hope a horse comes and bi tes me. Ouch!!! "Ukyuk! Ukyuk! Ukyuk! Ukyuk! Ukyuk Ukyuk!" Kevin Fields
