BY SAM KITAKJxi^ One day w h e n m y mom, Dad, m y bro t h e r and I were going scuba diving, we saw a sunken ship.

We went the ship and looked in a room.

We saw lots of bottles, so we took some of them.

Then we w e n t to our boat and put the bottles in a drawer.

W h e n we w e n t back into the water, we saw a lot of n e a t fish.

Su d d e n l y an octopus gra b b e d m y moml Dad told me to go get the spears in the boat.

I g o t them and gave two to m y dad, one to m y brother, and k e p t one for myself.

Dad t h rew both of his spears, m y brothe threw his spear, and I threw mine.

The o ctopus died and Mom got away.

So we w e n t to the boat and w e n t home.

MY SCUBA DIVING LES S O N

One day I met a scuba diving teacher.

I asked him to teach me h o w to scuba dive.

He said sure.

So the n ext day we w ent out on a b oat and he showed me how to put the div i n g suit on. Then we dove into the water.

Splash 1 We swam d own deep.

There w a s a cave and we w e n t in.

It was p i t c h black in the cave.

We k e p t on swimming.

It started ta get lig h t e r and lighter.

Su d d e n l y two fish m e n grabbed us and took us f a r t h e r back in the cave u n til we came to a castle 1 I c ouxin't believe m y eyes. Then all of a sudden we w ere face to face w i t h the kin^.

He was nice and we became friends.

He let u s go back to the boat. ‘ That was the b i g g e s t a d v enture I ever had!

And at lea s t every y e a r I go back and visit them.

A l l of a sudden a storm started brewing.

T h e y s p o t t e d a s h i p b o u n c i n g a r o u n d i n the sea.

The m e r m a i d s found it quite amusing.

It w a s orange.

I picked, it up and brought it home.

Then I got some s a l twater and put it in.

I pre t e n d e d that m y f ingers w ere crabs.

We started to p l a y a game.

It got h e r excited.

Then she calmed down.

I started to feed her.

She became quiet.

On Monday, May *4, I l e f t school and I went to San F r a n c i s c o a i r p o r t because I was f l y i n g around the wor ld w i t h my f a m i l y .

We were f l y i n g to H o n o l u l u , Hawai i .

We had lunch on the plane.

I t was c h i c k e n , soup, c o o k i e s , bread and b u t t e r .

When we landed i t sounded l i k e we crashed.

When we got o f f the p lane we ran to another plane t h at was g o i n g to Maui.

We had to d r i v e to La ha i na where we stayed fo u r n i g h t s . Then we flew to Kona.

A f t e r three days in Kona we went to the a i r p o r t and flew to Sydney, A u s t r a l i a f o r a week.

Then we went to W e l l i n g t o n on a s h i p .

When we got back to Sydney we drove to P er th , A u s t r a l i a .

We stayed at Perth one night.

Then we came back to Sydney and flew to Sh ang hai .

We stayed in Shanghai two days and then drove to P eking. A f t e r a day in P eki ng, China we fl ew to Tokyo.

We were in Tokyo f o r two weeks.

Our next s to p was C a l c u t t a , I n d i a .

We drove to where we could see Mount E v e r e s t , the h i g h e s t spot on Ear t h 29,028 f e e t , almost 6 m i l e s high!

When we got back to C a l c u t t a we went to bed and in the morning we flew to Johannes burg, South A f r i c a .

A f t e r b r e a k f a s t we went to a j u n g l e .

We saw a l l kinds of animals.

We stayed f i v e more days in Johannesburg then took a s h i p to Madag as car.

C a i r o , Egypt was our next s te p.

A f t e r our f o u r t h day in C a i r o we f l ew to Moscow, USSR. A f t e r seven days in Moscow we drove to Warsaw, Pol and.

The day we l e f t Warsaw my b r ot her and my mom had to leave on a d i f f e r e n t plane because my b r ot h er wanted to go home. My mom wanted to go home too.

A f t e r my mom and my b r ot her were on t h e i r plane to San F r a n c i s c o , my dad and I got on our p lane and went to F r a n k f o r t , West Germany.

In F r a n k f o r t we d i d a l o t o f w a l k i n g .

When we got back to the hotel we drove to the B l a c k F o r e s t .

When we got to the B l a c k F or es t we went to see fo u r mount ains.

The next day we flew to B e r l i n .

A f t e r a day in B e r l i n we drove through Czechs 1o v a k i a .

We drove to Vienna, A u s t r i a , then Budapest and on to Rome. When in Rome we v i s i t e d the V a t i c a n C i t y .

In a year I wanted to go to Mars.

When I went I f or go t a l l about Ri bsy. When I came back from Mars my robot was broken.

Hiram 1s ship had a terrible voyage around Cape Horn. There were many storms, many on the ship died of illnesses, and they were cold. 400 people came on a ship made for 210 people 1 "I wouldn't have taken my family if I knew what was coming," Josiah said after they reached California.

Jacob and Annie, Josiah's son and wife, almost died of scurvy.

Todd, his oldest son, almost froze; But, in the end, it ,all turned out fine.

Then, Indians demanded money for crossing their land. The settlers had no money so they armed themselves with guns, knives, and hatchets.

They were about to start a fight when, at the last minute, the Indians let them through.

Their wheels broke. The food was bad. But the Royces kept on chugging and they finally made it to the gold fields.

Tanya Arthur THE MAGIC SHOE, One day I was in Arabia and saw some shoes.

I went

to the clerk and said, "How much are these shoes?"

The clerk said, "They are $100."

I said, "Why so expensive?"

"They are magical,'" said the clerk. "Try them on for size."1 I tried them and said, "They fit!'"

Just as I was about to

tie my shoe string, the shoe string tied itself.

"This is neat.

I said,

I ’ll buy them!"1 I paid and the lady said,

"If you take the shoes off, tie them somewhere so they can’t run away.'"

I remembered that, but when I took them off,

I forgot.

The next mornipg they were gone, so I looked, for

them.

I didn’t know that they were behind me all the time,

so I looked all around the house.

Finally the shoes

went "beep, beep",

when I picked them up, they

told me that they were scared'.

I remembered to

tie them up from then on.

CLASS HISTORY

As the s i x t h g r a d e r s look back on t h e i r y ears at t h i s wonderful s c h o o l , they see some t h i n g s they would l i k e to remember,, Everyone was new and nervous in k i n d e r g a r t e n .

Our t e a c h e r ' s name was Mrs. Lyman, but everyone c a l l e d her Mrs. Pieman.

One o f the more memorable lunches t h at year was N a t a s h a ' s smooshed sandwich.

In f i r s t grade we had M i s s Root as our t eacher.

She wore these h a l f shade g l a s s e s r i g h t on the t i p o f her nose th at made her look cute.

She was always p i n c h i n g your cheeks o r your chi n and s a y i n g , "Now people, do your w o r k ! " (remember th at Dan?) In the second grade most people remember s i n g i n g and p u t t i n g on many p l a y s .

Pamela, Megan, and Karen came in the middle o f the year. Wes remembers v i v i d l y the time when M i s s Schwarz was g i v i n g a d i c t a t i o n ; she f e l l over a nearby lunchbox.

Only Wes Laughed and M i s s Schwarz s a i d , " D o n ' t laugh, i t ' s NOT f u n n y . " Ron s ay s th at M i s s Schwarz was a very n i ce person, except when C h r i s t i a n S c h i l l i n g ki cked a hole in the w a l l .

A l l in a l l i t was a g r e a t year.

In the t h i r d grade, i f you asked to go to the bathroom, Mrs. Monnot would g i v e you d i a p e r s and a b o t t l e .

But i t w a s n ' t a bad year because Mark came to j o i n our c l a s s .

The hobby show th at we put on was g r e a t .

We learned how to w r i t e c u r s i v e and i t was the t u r n i n g p oi n t in our s t u d i e s .

In the f o u r t h grade, Whitney and C h r i s t i n a came to our school which became P h i l l i p s Brooks.

During t h i s year we went on many i n ­ t e r e s t i n g f i e l d t r i p s , but our t r i p to I n ve r ne ss was the g r e a t e s t .

We made an e x c i t i n g movie c a l l e d " J e d e di a h S m i t h . " Our c l a s s made a r i v e r scene, but when we saw i t on f i l m i t was a l l overexposed!

T ra g e d y ! !

We learned a l l about C a l i f o r n i a and b u i l t some t e r r i f i c missions,.

The k i d s who came here in f i f t h grade were a l i t t l e nervous but Mrs. Westmoreland made them fee l at home. T h i n gs began to get tough, and her a d v i c e helped everybody p u l l through. We had s u r ­ p r i s e p a r t i e s f o r a n y t h i n g we could t h i n k o f .

The c l a s s was in " Rock Bottom, " a musi cal p l a y , which was g r e a t .

Mrs. A l t r o c c h i was ver y s t r i c t in s i x t h grade.

She gave us more t e s t s than we would l i k e , e s p e c i a l l y in E n g l i s h .

On one h i s ­ t o r y t e s t we got some funny answers.

One q u e s t i o n was: Def ine: M e l t i n g Pot. One answer: " t h e pot in which immigrants cooked t h e i r food."

The f i e l d t r i p s th at year were e x c i t i n g .

A few weeks a f t e r the b e g i n n i n g o f s c h o o l , we went to the L o ui se M. Davies Symphony H a l l .

In the S p r i n g , we went on a boat that took us out i nt o the San Fran­ c i s c o Bay. Near the end o f the year, we went to Sacramento to see the Cap i t o l .

We would l i k e to thank a l l the teachers from Stan Drake to Mrs. Coberly f o r t h e i r help and ki ndness throughout our school y e a r s ; and Mr. Towner and Mrs. Root who l ent a paw in math and in making t h i s school the best one there ever could be.

S h e ' s the Cat You've Never Heard of Before As I hear the s o f t p i t t e r - p a t of her daint y fee t, I look up from my book. She g r a c e f u l l y leaps up on the couch, s t r e t c h i n g her limbs, and I hear the s o f t p u rr i ng o f a s a t i s f i e d f ri end.

Q u i e t l y she c u r l s up c l o s e to me, ta ki ng a short nap on my lap; 1 gaze at her as her weary eyes c l o s e and her t a i l surrounds her body, t wi tchi ng s 1i g h t l y .

Sl o wl y, she s t a r t s to l i c k her smooth fur with her tongue. Then, suddenl she s pots a f l y that buzzes by.

She stops l i c k i n g h e r s e l f and s t ar e s un­ moving, as i f she i s a s t at u e.

Her ears perk up, and her eyes are eager and f l a s h i n g .

Her muscles r i p p l e , ready to pounce. She watches the f l y f l i t from one place to another, looking s l y l y at i t .

F i n a l l y , she s e t t l e s down comfortably, as i f she had had a tiresome day.

S o f t l y , she r es t s her head on my lap, not making a sound to d i s t u r b the peaceful s i l e n c e . I s i g h as she s l e e p i l y d r i f t s o f f , unaware that 1 have now turned my a t t e n t i o n back to my book. At times I glance q u i e t l y to see i f she i s comfortable.

When I study her face, her green eyes seemed to plead to me, as i f to say something; her e x q u i s i t e whiskers waver as a flowing breeze passes through the ai r.

She seems at peace, enjoyi ng l i f e , t r y i n g to express her f e e l i n g s .

She is Jez ebe ll e, a " p e o p l e " cat .

I Remember.. ..

One n i g h t I heard a noise downstairs.

I went down to see i f anybody was down there.

As I crept down the s t a i r s I heard the noise again.

I t sounded l i k e a motor.

I went down the dark hallway and looked around the corner to see i f anybody was there but nobody was there.

I got very scared.

I was so scared that I made a hi de- out o f p il l o w s .

A l l o f a sudden the c lo c k turned red and two l i t t l e midgets came out of the c lo ck.

They grabbed me and took me r i g h t through the clock and into t h e i r spaceship.

I asked them where we were going.

They s ai d , " M a r s . " Mars! 1 I y e l l e d . were al ready at Mars.

I was j u s t about to jump out when I noticed that we

As I stepped out, I saw t i n y red people s t a r i n g at me. " I want to go home," I s a i d .

I kicked a window in and climbed in.

I was j u s t about t o q u i t when I r e a l i z e d something, i q u i c k l y took my k n i f e out o f my pocket and cut a body open.

There was not a tape r ec or der .

I kept c u t t i n g .

In the t h i r d body there was a tape.

The next morning I happened to g l a n c e at the f r o n t page o f the paper.

I t read, “Mass K i l l e r Turns H i m s e l f ln„ “ Below the s t o r y s a i d th at the person who made him s u r re n de r would get a $10,000.00 reward.

The reason f o r t h i s was th at the case b a f f l e d p o l i c e .

I t a l s o turned out th at 57 people had been k i l l e d by the man!

The Most S ca r y Experi ence and the Best P a r ty “Whew!"

I thought to m y s e l f as I f u r i o u s l y l i c k e d the f u r on my s i d e .

I wished I w a s n ' t being bumped around so much.

I wondered where a s m a l l , b l a c k l i t t l e t h i n g l i k e me could be g o i n g .

My b r ot h e r s and s i s t e r s w e r e n ' t th ere , so I was s u s p i c i o u s because I always go w i t h them. The c a r was g o i n g c l a n k , c l i n k , bounce, bump, and I was being t os s ed around my cage.

Once in awh il e I saw some f a t , f i n g e r s s t i c k i n g in.

Once I took my chances and b i t one.

A f t e r that I d i d n ' t see them much anymore. W e l l , th at was a l l r i g h t because I was g e t t i n g s l e e p y , zzzzzz When I woke up I heard a v o i c e s a y i n g , "Shhh, l i t t l e g i r l , go back to sleep."

I suspected i t was th at t a s t y hand a g a i n .

I looked out o f the window and saw why I had woken up. We were t e e t e r - t o t t e r i n g on the s i d e o f a bridge.

Suddenly we s t a r t e d g o i n g down (jown down.

Blub, b l ub, water was s e e pi n g in through the window and I was f l o a t i n g in my cage.

Suddenly I was grabbed out o f my cage and held t i g h t .

(By t h i s time I was about up. to f r e a k o u t . ) The hand was p u l l i n g me up The hand had a l i f e p r e s e r v e r around her w a i s t .

A l l o f a sudden, we were out o f the water and on a boat.

I looked at the hand and i t was my owner.

She mumbled something about being l a t e f o r a p a r t y but then looked at me and s a i d , “Oh! 0 h ! “ The c a p t a i n o f the boat gave us a ri de home and when I went in the door everybody was there s h o u t i n g , “S u r p r i s e !

Happy B i r t h d a y ! " So th at was why I went on a d r i v e .

W e l l , I d i d n ' t mind the a cc i d e n t because my s u r p r i s e p a r t y (the best one I ' d ever had) made up f o r i t a m i l l i o n times o v e r ! ! ! . »

I Remember When..............

*

I remember when Rebekah and I were g o i n g f o r a two week h i k i n g t r i p and a l l o f a sudden we heard a funny n o i s e .

I t was not e x a c t l y funny, i t was more l i k e a s c a r y n o i s e .

W e l l , we kept on w a l k i n g and as we walked we went f u r t h e r i n t o the woods.

Rebekah and I thought about i t a l i t t l e more and we decided to b u i l d a s h e l t e r and s l e e p th ere f o r the n i g h t .

I was about t o take a b i t e o f my sandwich when Rebekah y e l l e d to me; she t o l d me she heard the n o i s e a g a i n .

Then we saw a purple o b j e c t in the air.

A few minutes l a t e r some l i t t l e p urple men w i t h three mas si ve eyes came out o f the p ur pl e t h i n g .

We were s t a r t l e d .

One o f the men walked up to us and s a i d , " C a l l me J i m , " and he asked us i f we wanted to go w i t h them t o P urple Eye p l a n e t .

We thought i t over f o r a w h il e and we decided to go.

Rebekah asked how long i t would take to go there, s t a y th ere , and come back.

Jim s a i d i t would take two days to get there and about a week to come back.

Rebekah and I s a i d t h at would be p e r f e c t because we had to be back in two weeks. We got our s t u f f i n t o the p u rp l e t h i n g and we l e f t .

The second day Jim was t e l l i n g us about P l a n et Blue Mouth, t h e i r enemy, and th at he saw some o f t h e i r Blue Mouth t h i n g s r i g h t next to us.

He t o l d us to get i n t o our s e a t s and buckle up. There was a l i t t l e war and we f i n a l l y got to P ur pl e Eye. I t was b e a u t i f u l , but e v e r y t h i n g was p ur p le . He showed us where we were to s t a y .

Then Jim showed us where we could have fun.

The f i r s t t h i n g we d i d was a i r s k i i n g .

You would ski in t h i s enormous a i r bubble.

I t was g e t t i n g l a t e so we went f o r some d i n n e r at the P ur pl e Inn. It was d e l i c i o u s .

I had Purp le- eyed peas and P ur pl e Mouth meat.

Rebekah had the same t h i n g .

Days went f a s t and f i n a l l y we got home.

A Day to Remember I remember that s e ve r al ye ar s ago, I was p l a y i n g wi th my cat when e v e r y t h i n g stopped dead.

I threw a smal 1 brown rubber mouse and i t stopped in m i d - a i r .

My cat and I j u s t s a t on the lawn t o t a l l y perplexed.

I must have f a l l e n a s l e e p because I d o n ' t remember a n y th i n g u n t i l I found th at my cat and I were on a cold metal t a b l e in a b l ea k room.

A door opened and in walked in a s i x - f o o t Rhode I s l a n d Red Chi cken! !

He s a i d to r e l a x and t r y to s t a y calm.

My c a t awoke and went d a f t , l u ng i n g a t the t e r r i f i e d d o ct o r , t e a r i n g o f f a few red f e a t h e r s .

The do cto r c a l l e d in the s e n t r y who zapped my cat wi th a Pecker ray.

She dropped to the floor.

We were taken to the Chickendent who s a i d we were on the pl anet Chi ckenot.

For my c a t ' s b e ha v i o r , we would be thrown in Cholsom (TCHOL-some) Prison.

At that I picked up my cat and ran.

I remember c o l l a p s i n g and when I woke up; I was on Eart h.

I t o l d my mother what had happened and she s a i d I was a s l e e p ; THANK GOODNESS! f\!

A

A M a g i c a l l y Beauti ful Winter Sometimes f a s t and f u r i o u s , sometimes s o f t and l i g h t as down, the enormous snowflakes f e l l r e l e n t l e s s l y from the leaden sky, s i l e n t l y burying the cabin ever deeper beneath i t s white mantle. As f a r as the eye could see from the f ro s t e d window, the v a l l e y was marshmallow topping.

The trees looked l i k e i c i c l e s , and the lake was l i k e a mirror. The v a l l e y - w o r l d was s i l e n t , as i f a s l e e p i n g s p e l l was c a st upon i t , and the s t a r s shone l ike diamonds.

As the sun came up, s p i d e r webs were decorated with dewdrops, and the snow was s p a r k l i n g as i t began to s of ten.

The ice shone on the lake, while l i t t l e animals opened t h e i r wee eyes and scampered o f f into the h i l l s .

Bi rds o f a l l kinds were f l y i n g , c h i r p i n g , or s i t t i n g comfortably in t hei r n es t s .

The b i t t e r l y cold a i r had awakened everyone, even the mountain men who came to hunt.

As these brutal beings s t al ked the f o r e s t , a white f u r ry snow-shoe r a b bi t f l e d towards the s a f e t y o f h i s home. A shot rang through the f o r e s t , and a l l the animals froze in fear.

The poor soul lay in h i s grave on the snow, b l oo d y. . .a nd dead.

Thi s k i l l i n g was not rare in the h i l l s ;

in fact i t happened qui te often.

As I lay back in my c h a i r , I wrote what I had seen in my notebook.

Today I would leave t h i s " t e r r o r i z e d " f o r e s t , and go to the National W i l d l i f e Refuge to save these animals from e x t i n c t i o n .

Sherman had been defeated and k i l l e d .

The Confederacy had defended A t l a n t a with pride and d i g n i t y .

Sherman was turned back when he h i t the outer part o f the c i t y .

General Lee shot down the h o r r i b l e Yankees ' t i l they had nothing l e f t but t h e i r s h or ts .

Cheers rang out through A t l a n t a and as f a r away as V i r g i n i a .

V i c t o r y had f i n a l l y come for the South.

The Yanks knew they were defeated and had to admit they were p ret t y well 1i eked.

Lee had j u s t been made President but he had to face the problems of r e b u i l d i n g the North.

His plan was to have Southern s o l d i e r s come in and control the North.

Then he was going to bring in carpenters to rebuild the North.

Slowly the North was r e b u i l t .

Lee' s plan had worked.

He had accomplished an extreme task.

He now had to face the problem o f g e t t i n g the North back together with the United S t a te s.

He met with Li ncoln and they f i n a l l y agreed to come back into the U.S. America was reuni together again.

A True T a l e o f Tragedy I remember the sno wf lakes f a l l i n g in l a r g e q u a n t i t i e s and the w a t e r f a l l s c a s c a d i n g o f f the c l i f f s .

P l a y i n g in the water as a leopard cub was a c h i l d 1 d e l i g h t , o r shoud I say a c u b ' s d e l i g h t .

How n i ce i t was to p l a y in the sand o f the windy beaches, and run in the waves o f the g r e a t , bl ue - gr ee n ocean.

I a l s o remember the c h il dh oo d t raged y o f death.

Man was always r e s p o n s i b l e f o r t h i s unmi st akabl e m i s f o r t u n e which l a y upon many a n i ma l s as w e ll as the g r e a t leopard.

Our s o f t , f i n e golden h a i r w i t h b l a c k , s l i g h t l y cur vy, s p o t s i s a p o a c h e r ' s d e l i g h t .

At the end o f our t a i l s , we have a smooth, creamy whit e t i p and b l a c k and brown s p ot s desc endi ng a f t e r i t .

Our j aws, w i t h tongue l o l l i n g , are always a nightmare to b e l i e v e .

I n s i d e our jaws are many rows o f s m a l l , s ha r p, gleami ng teeth.

The s t r e n g t h o f our jaws has u n f o r g i v a b l e power as do our l e g s .

Legs are important to us because they g i v e us the a b i l i t y to jump and pounce from the h i g h e s t t r e e s .

The muscles in our l eg s are f a r more a g i l e and ready f o r the most h o r r i b l e dangers the j u n g l e unleashes than are man's.

And our c l aw s , l a s t but not l e a s t , have a r i p p i n g and t e a r i n g a r t to them.

Man would not be such a t h r ea t i f o n l y he di d not have guns. most h o r r i b l e o f nightmares t h at haunt our th ou gh ts .

The United S t a t e s ' f o r t i e t h P r e s i d e n t , Ronald Reagan, and three o t h e r s , a policeman, a Sec ret S e r v i c e man, and James Brady, S e c r e t a r y o f the P r e s s , were shot by John H i n c k l e y , Jr. The whole t h i n g s t a r t e d when Reagan went to make a speech at the H i l t o n Hotel in Washington, D.C. The s e c u r i t y was not t i g h t .

People were among the p r e s s .

The P r e s i d e n t came out from making h i s speech when a man among the pr es s p u l l e d out a gun.

The man t r i e d to shoot the P r e s i d e n t but James Brady got in the way and got h i t in the head.

Then a policeman got in the way and was shot in the neck and s ho ul der .

The P r e s i d e n t was h i t a f t e r t h a t , and the man f i r e d a g a i n , but a Sec r et S e r v i c e man stepped in f r o n t o f the P r e s i d e n t and got h i t .

The P r e s i d e n t was pushed i n to h i s l i m o us in e and was rushed to George Washington U n i v e r s i t y H o s p i t a l f o r treatment.

So were the o t h e r s .

The s h o o t i n g happened in two seconds.

Reagan came through the s u r g e r y ;

James Brady came through too.

Global War Sometimes f a s t and f u r i o u s , sometimes s o f t and l i g h t as down, the enormous snowflakes f e l l r e l e n t l e s s l y from the leaden sky.

As f a r as the eye could see from the f ro s te d window a white blanket covered everything.

Roars were frequent.

I never w i l l know i f they were the wind or j e t s with i n f r a - r e d scanners.

I was s t a t io n ed in a small mountain cabin.

There was a two-way radio and an e l e c t r i c heater on the f l o o r .

In one corner was a bunk and mounted on the wall was an M-16 with 36,000 rounds and a bazooka and 100 s h e l l s .

O c c a s i o n a l l y a f l a s h on the horizon would s i g n i f y a bomb or grenade.

Suddenly out o f nowhere came h e l i c o p t e r s and l o t s of them. Three on the r i g h t f l a n k f i r e d rockets at the cabin. At t h i s , I closed the window and opened the gun port.

Before I could get the M-16, two h e l i c o p t e r s had landed and s o l d i e r s s t ar t ed g e t t i n g out o f them.

I ran over and got the gun and ammo.

I thought, “ I f I go q u i c k l y , I can pick o f f a few."

I did j u s t that.

I ran to the port and opened f i r e .

The b u l l e t s k i l l e d three and wounded seven, i nc lu d in g one of the ' c o p t e r s 1 p i l o t s , thus c r i p p l i n g i t .

I got the bazooka and destroyed the h el i cop ter .

In the meantime I was radioed.

The commander s a i d , "The other s t a t i o n s have destroyed most of the h e l i c o p t e r s , but re-enforcements are due any minute.

You have been doing w e l l , keep i t up."

“Thank you, Si r . “ The commander was r i g h t ; re-enforcements came, luck'ily very few. The f i r s t one must have been a scanner because i t flew r i g h t over my head, but the next two had me worried.

They zeroed in r i g h t at the cabin.

I stayed calm by s a y i n g , “You di e, i d i o t ! ! " I shot o f f one of the r o t o r - b l a d e s and the ' copter did a t r i p l e b a r r e l - r o l l and plowed into the c a b i n , l e a v i n g me good t ar get p r a ct i c e f o r the other h e li c op te r s.

F r a n t i c a l l y I searched for a weapon.

I found the bazooka and s i x shells.

Bazooka a r e n ' t u s u a l l y used for a n t i - a i r c r a f t guns, but i t was my o nly chance.

The enemy f i r e d two rockets which flew close overhead but missed.

I , loaded the bazooka, aimed i t and f i r e d , but missed by s i x yards.

Thi s gave the ' cop te r a chance to f i r e .

This rocket h i t f ar in front of me.

I loaded my bazooka g i v i n g the enemy yet another chance to f i r e .

This rocked exploded j u s t to my l e f t while I f i r e d .

I was h i t by a piece of shrapnel.

When I awoke, the commander was looking over me, ready to pin a medal o f bravery and a Purple Heart.

I wrote her back and I t o l d her, "Tomorrow I s t a r t s c h o o l , and I am a l i t t l e scared because I d o n ' t know i f the people w i l l 1i ke me," W e l l , the next day I woke up at 5:30 and I woke everyone e l s e up. They were mad at me but I d i d n ' t care.

My mom drove me and my two s i s t e r s to the school.

We got th ere , I was not nervous anymore.

I t was chasi ng a rabbi t that was as white as the snow.

In the d i s t a n c e , there were sparks f l y i n g .

I hoped the war would stop.

I was always wondering i f the brother of my f r i e n d , Sarah, was s t i l l a l i v e .

There was no way o f knowing.

But Sarah and 1 s t i l l had hope in our hearts.

Later that n i g h t , b e l l s rang while I was asleep, Those b e l l s meant that the war was over.

I rushed into my Mother' s and F a t h e r ' s room and woke them up s a y i n g , "The b e l l s j u s t rang!

I heard them! They r a n g ! ! " The b e l l s sounded again.

They leaped out of bed laughing and f u l l of joy.

The war was moving toward us, so we were extremely happy that i t was over.

We woke up my brother and s i s t e r and t o l d them them the news. The whole f a mi ly was jumping with joy, Even our c o l l i e , Sandy, seemed to know what was happening.

We stayed up a l l ni gh t c e l e b r a t i n g .

Except Sandy.

He dozed o f f into a s leep.

The b e l l s were p l a y i n g songs a l l ni gh t.

Thi s was the happiest o ccas ion that we'd ever had.

We s t i l l d i d n ' t know i f S a r a h ' s brother was a l i v e or not.

We knew we w ou l dn ' t get the news for a day or so. The next day we saw someone walking toward the house so we thought, "Oh good!

I t must be S a r a h! " Whoever i t was passed our house. About an hour o r ‘so a f t e r that, someone e l s e was walki ng toward our house.

I t was Sarah! We a l l ran out, even Sandy, and climbed a l l over her, wondering what the news was.

"He's alive!

I s t a r t e d s k i i n g down the mountain at about ten miles per hour0 I was having a great time u n t i l I saw a larg e bale of hay in front of me.

I d i d n ' t qui te know how to stop because t h i s was my f i r s t time.

I went cra sh ing into the bale o f hay and my s k i s came to a dead h a l t .

I went f l y i n g on down the h i l l i nto a small p i l e o f snow.

A f t e r that I got up and walked up the h i l l , got my s k i s , and walked down the r es t of the h i l l .

1 remember the g l o r i o u s t r i p I took in my wonderful i n ve n t i o n .

Steaming a i r would pour from the flame t or ch i nt o the massi ve b a l l o o n which would soon be c a r r y i n g me as f a r as the b a l l o o n c ould go.

I had a very good s u p pl y o f food and water to c a r r y wi th me.

The day I had chosen to leave on my journey seemed so f a r away from today, March 31, 1792.

F i n a l l y the long awaited day came.

A p r i l 21, 1792 was the day I heard f r i e n d s s h o u t i n g "Bon Voyage" to me.

Food was stacked in a l i t t l e compartment th at I had added to my hot a i r b a l l o o n .

That was my i n ve n t i o n .

I had added a small room to the b a l l o o n and t h at room had a c h a i r , a p l a ce to keep the food, and a m a t tr e ss on the f l o o r to s l e e p on.

On my t r i p I flew over green, green t r e e t o p s , blue o ceans , and many o t h e r wonderful s i g h t s .

A f t e r s e v e r a l g l o r i o u s weeks o f s o a r i n g from South A f r i c a 1 had not yet been bothered by rough weather.

L i t t l e di d I know th at a storm was headed my way.

In the next fo u r days the sky began to darken.

Then, a l l o f a sudden, a v i o l e n t storm broke out.

The thunder was the most t e r r i f y i n g sound I could hear at the moment. A l l 1 could t h i n k o f do ing was g o i n g i n s i d e and g o i n g to s 1eep.

Next t h i n g I knew I was awake and the sun was s h i n i n g .

I knew th at I would have to land soon because a l l o f the food had been knocked out o f the room d u r i n g the storm.

In around f i v e hours I had landed on the ground in China. warmly and g i ven a p l a ce to r e s t .

The Oreo F act ory I remember the day I v i s i t e d the Oreo f a c t o r y and was separated from the tour.

I found m y se lf in a maze in the s t u f f i n g s e c t i o n .

When I grew hungry I would crawl up to the huge v a t s and d i p my arm i n t o the creamy, foamy, whit e s t u f f i n g .

Once 1 c o u l d n ' t r e s i s t the te mp ta ti o n, so I f i l l e d my shoe wi th the f a t t e n i n g cream.

I t was l a t e in the n i g h t when I slumped i nt o the p ackag in g s e c t i o n .

When I saw the p i l e s o f unpacked c o ok i e s I was suddenly s t a r v e d .

When I came to, I found my sel f d i v i n g i n t o the l o f t y p i l e s o f Double S t u f f i n g cookies.

When the employees found me the next morning I weighed 110 pounds, 25 pounds more than I u s u a l l y do, and I was f a s t a s l ee p.

Father was working in town and Mother and I were alone. A l l of a sudden I sat upright in an a l a r mi n gl y swi f t mot ion.

“What was that n o i s e ? " I asked in a very shaky voice.

“Only the w i n d , " repli ed Mother. We both laughed a very weak shaky 1augh.

“M other, " I s a i d , “how can i t be snowing in the middle of J u l y ? " “The weather i s very unpredictable.

I t does j u s t what i t p l e a s e s , " I thought t h i s a very s trange answer indeed. A l l too soon I bolted upri ght.

“Mother, do you you hear any t hi n g? " “Why no, nothing at a l l , " “The b l i z z a r d i s o v e r ! ! ! " I shouted.

I t was true the long threatening b l i z z a r d was over!

E a r l y the next day Father came home.

My l i t t l e f a mi ly has enlarged and I now have a l i t t l e s i s t e r .

Our l i t t l e f a m il y i s now prepared for anything.

My F i r s t Route (l Was Fired) I was r e a l l y goi ng f a s t .

I had j u s t turned the corner where my f i r s t paper route had s t a r t e d .

I turned into the f i r s t driveway.

I q u i c k l y threw a paper. “Oh n o !" I exclaimed as the paper s a i l e d into the bushes.

I didn't stop to f i x my mistake.

I was zooming out o f the driveway into the s t r e et when a car almost h i t me.

I was r e a l l y scared.

I thought that 1 was going to be scraped up o f f the s t r e e t .

I t missed me though.

I y el led at i t , “You crazy n u t ! " The route went that way; papers in tr ees , bushes, car windows, on ro of s, and some houses that I d i d n ' t even d e l i v e r to.

I made twenty papers on the porch out o f one-hundred. On the 86th house, I was about to throw the paper when a bl ack cat came s t r e a k i n g out o f nowhere.

I swerved away but j u s t then I threw the paper.

I t went s a i l i n g into the window. “Dar n! " I cussed.

Not da ri ng to look back, I heard the f at maid screaming her head o f f at me in Spanish. Man, that language can d r i v e a person nutty!

I f i n i s h e d the houses without much o f a problem. The next day however, I was fi red.

The tree I saw was big and i t had pretty rough brown bark. There were places where branches had been broken o f f .

From the ground i t looked very old and slanted a l i t t l e to the l e f t . The tree made fi ne shade because i t was very large. The leaves were green and g e t ti n g l i g h t e r at the top.

I t had some bugs on the leaves and some dead leaves had come o f f . The base was about three feet wide with a hole.

I t looked l i k e some creature had dug into i t , and when I looked further down, I saw another hole. There were lots of ants in these holes. Nature i s a great and marvelous thin' Matt James

Frog Thoughts I remember when I was a l i t t l e tadpole. My fri ends used to c a l l me Flipper. My mom and dad lived in a swamp, as t hi ck as molasses , in Georgia.

Our home was a hollowed stump stuffed with green gr a ss .

I was the highest jumper in the whole swamp. My l i t t l e brother, Flippy, used to tr y to jump as high as me, but he was so small, he'd get stuck in a tree. Mother used to make me s tri ped bathing s u i t s for the swim team.

I remember big people in a boat that dropped some t a f f y on my l i t t l e brother, Flippy. He was stuck a l l day, and cried and cri ed, and cried.

One day, on a hot summer afternoon, a l l the f ro g gi e s from Finwick Ele­ mentary High School, a l l the townspeople, and even mean old Mr. F i n s l i p , gathered around Mayor Froglegs while he spoke about having a race. Every­ body lined up and at the s i g n a l , they s tar ted.

I had a good s t a r t , but Flippy received a broken f l i p p e r when an older frog stepped on him, so he j u s t sat in a mud puddle cry ing.

I jumped along with the whole town behind me as though I could jump a l l day long. Well, I won a prize of a water-squeeter dinner at the Tree Stump Inn. Well now, I am an old grandfather, and I c a n ' t jump anymore.

The Journey to the Desert I remember when I would wait for every summer to come. My family and I would go to the C a l i f o r n i a State Fair.

In the summer of 1981 Pam and I went in a huge hot a i r balloon with the guide. The rope kept us from f l y i n g o f f into the world. Somebody cut the ropes and we were climbing high into the a i r . We were scared because the guide had jumped out and we were f l y i n g higher and higher. We were very tired and frightened.

F i n a l l y we landed in the smooth sands of the Arizona desert. We were hot and t h i r s t y . We walked about a hundred miles and saw an Indian v i l l a g e .

There were straw hats and adobe houses. Some Indians showed us a bar and gave us some money and handmade d o l l s . We call ed our parents, hoping they were home. They were and we flew home. Af ter that we never went in a hot a i r balloon again.

I remember when the great c i r c u s came to town. The town was s ma l l , h ar dl y enough room for the bi g tent.

In Mallbrook the c i r c u s was a bi g s u c c e s s , e s p e c i a l l y to my twin s i s t e r and me. The morning the people put the te n ts up, almost h a l f the town was there. My s i s t e r , J u l i e , and I got s i det r acked by the vast elephants and John went wandering o f f . When we f i n a l l y noticed that John was gone, we were very alarmed because we had to be home in h a l f an hour!

J u l i e and I s p l i t up and agreed to meet at the l i o n s ' cage. When we met, John was not with e i t h e r one of us. Af ter searching some more we went i nt o the snack place to get a dri nk. While we were o rd er i ng , we heard a loud voice suddenly say, "What do you mean you only got ONE of the Tremaine k i d s ? " When we heard our l a s t name, we were wi shi ng we could suddenly d i s a p p e a r , but we noticed that f i v e very cruel looking men were surrounding us. The c i r c u s men took us into a small and cramped t r a i l e r where we saw John and they told us why they had kidnapped us. We were kidnapped because some c i r c u s people had heard that our father was a m i l l i o n a i r e and they were goi ng to ask for $50,000 ransom.

While we were in the t r a i l e r , an old woman had told a guard that was guardi ng the entrance what happened in the snack place. The guard c a l l e d some o f the other guards and searched the grounds. They found J u l i e , John and me and arr es ted the men.

The next time the c i r c u s came to Mallbrook, we went with our parents.
