THE BLOB Once when I was walking home from school I saw a light. I went to see what it was. IT WAS A SPACESHIP! A little blob came out of it. It was yellow with purple dots on it. I threw a rock at it and it bounced off of it . 1 tried to blow it up wlth some dynamite and it worked. So that was the end of the blob. by Craig THE MAGIC KINGDOM Once upon a time there was a king. He lived in a palace where everyone would love to live. He lived in a castle. In the moat were alligators and mermaids. In the deep woods were unicorns and other mythical beasts. But the ones he liked best were unicorns and merma ids. One day he went out to find a unicorn that he knew. After three hours he found him grazing in the field at the back of the forest. At first the unicorn did not notice him. After five minutes he said "Hi." After that the king asked him for a wish. The wish was that he hoped that the people in his kingdom would be happy. The next day he went down to the moat steps and called a mermaid. She came in two minutes. He asked her the same wish. The next day everyone was as happy as if they were at a bi rthday party. by

THE HOT BALLOON One day 1 was coming home from school. I saw an old hot balloon in a junkyard. I got off my bike and went to the hot balloon. There was a hole in the balloon. It was not that big. Then I went home and got my friend and we went to get the balloon. We carried it to my house. Then we went back to look for a motor. We could not find a balloon motor. So we used an airplane motor. We carried it home. I had my Mom patch the balloon. My father and I fixed the motor. Then we put it on the balloon. We put two seats on the balloon. My father started the motor. My friend and I started going up in the air. Then it stopped and then it went forward. We went around the world in two weeks. I saw my house. I landed on the roof. Then I jumped down from the roof and we were happy to be home again. by

GRAHAM CRACKERS AND MONSTERS It was a rainy, dark and lonely night. Juanita and I were walking home. All of a sudden, Juanita bumped into a purple and pink spotted monster. "Eek, Cristina! Let's get out of here!11 she screamed. We tore down the street toward Juanita's home. "Hi, Mom! We're home!" Juanita said as we burst in the door. "Guess what we saw? A monster!" "Oh, Juanita, look at you," said her mom. '!'lt's raining and you went out without a raincoat!" Juanita's mother spanked her and we went to bed. The next day Juanita got up and then she woke me up. We decided to go on a camping trip. So we packed our camping equip ment and started off. When we got to the woods we walked a little and then we found a nice green grassy place and there was a stream right by it. £ £ We set our tents up and Juanita's fell back down so I had to help her get it back up again. Then we went to bed. The next day Juanita had to make breakfast. horrible.) It was Graham crackers and milk.

(It tasted

Then we went for a little walk when all of a sudden we saw the monster again. I thought it was just the Graham crackers and milk making me have hallucinations. But no! It looked exactly like the first monster we saw. We ran and ran back to our camping place and grabbed all our stuff and ran as fast as we could. When we got to Juanita's house her mother was so glad to see us safe and sound that she gave us a bowl of Graham crackers and milk and sent us straight to bed! Cristina Floriani

A BATTLE AT FORT POINT My name is Sergeant Christopher Forter. a lonely, little room.

I live at Fort Point in

I was out guarding when a cannonball hit in the center of the fort. I ran to the top of the fort and looked over the bay. I saw an enemy ship,on the bay. People were running all over. Just then, on the coast, I saw some soldiers marching toward our fort. man.

I saw people loading cannons. I volunteered.

One cannon was missing his 1st

By accident one man put the gunpowder and cannonball in backwards and the cannon blew-up. We had already killed the soldiers and one enemy boat. There was one more boat to destroy. I destroyed it in a way I would never do again. I put a cannon on a rowboat. Then I fired it off. There was so much pressure from the cannon that my boat flew back to the beach. Christopher Forter

A SPACEY SCHOOL "Scott Weston, Scott Weston to Mr. Amburg's office," came over the loud speaker just as I was writing a story for my news paper, The New York Times, but I went reluctantly. I couldn't possibly think what he would want with me at this time of day! Was something wrong? Just as I walked into his office he greeted me with a warm welcome, "Scott, my best reporter, how are you on this fine day?" Now I knew something was wrong! He said, "Scott we all know you are very educated and very smart." (l had to agree with him there but I kept quiet.) i would like you to go to a new school that has just started. I think it might be a real scoop. (l thought to myself, "A school - hmmmm an easy job.") Of course I'll go." "Great!" He said, "I'll just give you the location of the school, it's on Pluto!" "But Mr. Amburg! Pluto is a LONG way away!" I exclaimed. "Just get on the Express Shuttle to Pluto, it will only take about a week!" "But, but Mr. Amburg!" "Quiet, Weston! just pack your bags and I'll have a taxi take you downtown." When I got downtown to the shuttle station, two hours later I was on the shuttle. Just as I sat down, Zoom! we were off! When I got off the Express I saw a sign that said school, so I followed where it told me to go. Then I saw the school! It was strange! But then I saw the kids, they were even stranger! I wanted to leave, but I remembered what Mr. Amburg said so I walked up to one of the kids and asked him what grade he was in. He said, "B738kOSV." "Oh," I said again. "What sports do you play?" "I play Electronic Frizobot," he said. "Well, I'm from New York. My name is Scott Weston and I play Footbal1." "Nu Ork, Ott Eston and Oootal1, hmmmm," and he walked off. "Wait," I called after him. "Can I come and meet your teacher?" "Teacr?" "No, teacher I" "You mean Robot G+2? Well, ok." After we got down to the class room I was still wondering what grade he was in since I couldn't understand him the first time. He said, "Sorry, G+2 is out." "Well," I said, "why don't you show me your desk?" "Ok," he said. Then he showed me a big computer sort of table, that had all sorts of buttons on it. I asked, "Where's your pencil?" "Penel?" "No, just what do you write with?" (cont.)

•l I

(A SPACEY SCHOOL CONT.) ''Button FL see?" and he pushed a Button, then said, "Ott," into a speaker, then pushed the button once more and all of a sudden "Ott" was written on a piece of paper. It was a perfect "Ott"! "If you want to write in evisruc you push button FE, see?" and he wrote a very good Ott in cursive. After he showed me all these wonderful things, such as students sitting at tables full of all kinds of computers, or making art work with laser beams or watching things that took place hundreds of years ago on TV. It was magnificent! When I got back to earth I knew I had a story that would change all education on earth!!!!! Cathy Docter THE FUTURE MACHINE One day I was watching TV and drinking Coke. Suddenly a big round saucer landed in my room. It was silver and had lots of buttons. I went in. A glass covered the open ing after me. I pushed a button because I thought it would open the window. Instead it made the saucer fly off in space! I pushed another button. It gave me a big drink of blue bubbly stuff. It tasted like Coke. I pushed another button. It was green and had nails and saws and hammers on it. I tasted it. The pizza crust was cookies and the nails, saws and hammers were candies!

After I finished, I landed on a planet. I saw a man in gold. "What planet is this?" I asked him. "It is the planet Earth," he said. it does not look like Earth," I said* "That is because it's in the four thousandth century," he said. " Anyway," I said, "I'm starved! ,you have hamburgers?" "What are hamburgers, is it ham that comes out of your nose?" "No, no, it is two buns and in the center of it there is a piece of meat and some lettuce, pickles, catsup!" "Oh you mean Holakameras! You get them at Menolaforsoulamehorasa." "What a long name. We call it MacDonalds!" Conan Cheung

THE M&M MARI IANS One night when I was sleeping, I was all alone. My mon and dad had gone out to dinner. They said they wouldn't be back until two o'clock. My brother and sister had gone to a dance. Suddenly I heard something! It was getting closer and closer every second. I got out of bed and went outside to see what was wrong. I saw a big flying saucer with a shining light on top of it. Suddenly som weird M&M Martians with a lot of purple and green veins shot a laser gun at me. It paralyzed me for ten hours. The Martians put me in their spaceship and took me to their leader. He was sitting in a big chair. He said, "Operate on him t see what a human body looks like and what is in it. The Martians took me in a little room. Then they put me on a tiny bed with wheels. When they finished operating they brought me back home. I jumped in bed and went to sleep. The next morning my mom asked me if I was scared last night and I didn't answer. Matt Derry

AH, THIS IS THE LIFE You all remember Mopsy and Flopsy and that rabbit family. Well this is a different story when they were a little bit older. Mopsy and Flopsy were very, very tired of getting pushed around by their fourteen brothers and sisters at mealtime. Their brothers and sisters, got all the carrots and lettuce leaving Mopsy and Flopsy with carrot tops or something like that. "I'm tired of eating carrot tops. Let's get out of here," said Mopsy. "Good idea," answered Flopsy. So they packed up their stuff, sneaked out of the door, got on their bicycles, and rode to their friend Poopsey's house. Mrs. Poeboy opened the door. a grouchy voice.

"What do you want?" she asked in

"Well," Mopsy said shyly, "we don't like it at our house, and we wanted to know if we could live here." Mrs. Poeboy is a very unusual lady, so she let them stay. Mopsy and Flopsy put their stuff down in Poopsey's room and went out to play. "Do you want to play softball?" Mopsy asked Poopsey. "Nah, let's read." So they read. After all, it's not Mopsy's house. At dinner they got first pick of fried carrots and first pick of cup cakes. After dinner, Mopsy and Flopsy walked into the living room, lay down, patted their stomachs and said, "Ah, this is the life!" That night, Flopsy asked Poopsey, "Let's watch Mork and Mindy." "Nah," said Poopsey, "let's watch Charlie's Rabbits." So that's what they watched. After all, it's not Flopsy's house! The next morning they had French carrots and carrot juice, and after breakfast, Mopsy and Flopsy went into the living room, lay down, patted their stomach and said, "Ah, this is the life!" "Let's play Monopoly," suggested Mopsy. "Nah," answered Poopsey, "Let's play Parchesi." So that's what they played. After all, it's not Mopsy's house! Well, Mopsy and Flopsy were getting tired of doing everything that Poopsey wanted to do, and nothing that they wanted to do. Poopsey was pure, spoiled brat! They decided to go back home, They got their stuff together, said goodbye to Poopsey, got on their bikes and rode home. But when they got home they were so glad to see their brothers and sisters they hugged them each for one whole minute. Then they looked at their mom, tears in her eyes, and they hugged her for five minutes! As the years rolled on, they got first pick at mealtime every day. And after each meal, they always walked into the living room, lay down, patted their stomachs and said, "Ah, this is the life!" Becky Miller

.HE TRi ifrPur^ H E NjGHT Every HalloweerTthere is this mSi^cid that always T3Ugs TTs Karen, Cristina, Gilliam, Susie, Susan, Katrina, Monica, Cari, Haven, Cathy, Becky, Alex, and I hate going to his house, but we always figure that he might get nice each year but he doesn't. His name is Carlos Harper. He never gives us treats, all he does is his dumb tricks. All the time he puts everything in the wrapper except the candy. So one day, the day before Halloween, we thought of all sorts^ of tricks to play on him. Haven thought of pulling his dog's tail But I said, "That wouldn't be mean to him - that would be mean to his dog. Besides he doesn't have a dog!" Everybody thought of different ideas but I said, "NO! that won't be nice."

yy»c

But all of a sudden I thought of a great idea. "How about scaring him?" I asked. Everybody asked, "How?" at the same time. I said "By making his house haunted." Everybody wondered how we would do it. "Everybody, go get some money and bring your bikes! We'll meet back here in five minutes." When everybody got back we went down to Safeway. We bought all kinds of Spooky things. When Carlos left to get some more things we sneaked inside and hung everything in hidden places and attached wires and batteries to them. We tried our plan a couple of times to see if it would work. When we heard his car coming up the driveway we ran like anything. Luckily we put all the spooky things back where they belonged. On Halloween night we went over to his house and I rang the door bell. We screamed, "Trick or Treat!" He wasn't a bit afraid. He slammed the door. It hit Gillian's fingers and bashed them really badly. We were worried he might not get scared so we left the front door and peeked in the window. He was sitting in front of the fire place. All of us pushed our buttons, we heard all these screams, Yipe! AAhh! Eeeek! Aahhh! Help! After twenty minutes of this we pushed our buttons again and ran to the front door. I rang the door bell once more. He opened the door and dumped all the candy in our bags. Ever since he's been nice, But just in case we left our spooky things there. THE DAY THE MARTIANS TOOK ME

Q y 0 % 'A J t W e i b « (

One night when I was home alone with my brother, we were watching T.V. when I heard a sound outside. My brother said, "Let's go see what it is," so we went outside to look. We saw a giant spaceship coming down toward our backyard. Then the spaceship landed and two creatures came out. They had purple bodies and only one eye. They ran after us trying to catch us. I tried to call the police but the Martians did something to kill the powe r. I told my brother to try to get help, but one of the Martians hit him with his freeze ray. I hid under the table but I had to sneeze. A-chool The Martians heard me! They captured me. They took me and my brother back to their planet. When we got there they took us to their king. I couldn't understand what he was saying but I think he didn't like us. The guards took us to a giant arena. They were going to release a giant monster that looked like a three nosed Moongoose. I got an idea. I took a piece of bubble gum out of my pocket and gave it to one of the guards. He didn't know what to do with it. I showed him how to chew it and he liked it. My brother and I passed out gum to all the guards. They were so interested in the gum they forgot all about us and releasing the monster. Then we sneaked to the launching base, got a spaceship and flew home. David Weibel

CHARLES THE MONSTER fly One dark night Chris F. , Charles and I were walking down a street when Charles fell in the sewer. He shouted, "HELP! SOMETHING IS PULLING ME INTO SLIMY STUFF!" Chris F. and I ran back to the club house and got a rope. When we came back Charles wasn't there. Chris and I dropped the rope and jumped in. Some octopus creature pulled us into a laboratory. We saw Charles tied up on an operating table! There was a man standing by Charles. He said, "Hi! I am Dr. G. T. Smiley." "What are you going to do to him?" we asked anxiously. "I'm going totake a monster's brain and put it into Charles' head. Then I will take his brain and put it in themonster's head!" said Dr. Smiley. We started to run but some monsters grabbed us amd took us to a Jail. We asked, "Who is going to give us our food?" "Nobody!" said the guard. That night Chris and I squeezed through the jail bars. After that we tiptoed to the lab. Wesaw Charles on the table. We unstrapped him and left. We crept out of the lab and ran! When we got home my mom asked where we went. Mom, we just went for a walk!"

We said, "Oh, nowhere,

'THE DAY OF THE MIRACLE MOTOR" One strange day Fats, a first grader brought his toy truck to school. He squeezed in. He fitl This surprised everyone! Well, at recess he squeezed in again and suddenly the truck started to move! Wow! And there was a motor! And it worked I He started to drive around, Vroom, Vroom, "Watch out, Mr. Towner!" That was a close call! Phew! Well, Vroom, Vroom. He was going under the bars, over benches and between huge trees! He even hit a lunch box and an orange rolled out! Root!

Later, he almost ran into Miss Boy, was she mad!

After school when he showed his friend Ralph, he crashed into trees and ruined Mrs. Twain's (Fat's mom) favorite flowers. When Fats got in he went straight through his mother's legs! The next day at school he tried to go through Mr. Towner's legs. The motor stopped right under Mr. Towner! He was furious! What happened to Fat's motor? He looked all over for it. It was there! But it didn't start! Why? Why did it work yesterday and not today? It is really a cheap old motor. Yesterday was the strangest day of my life - the day of the "mi racle motor!" Susan Smith

•* MY BROTHER THE CREEP My brother's name is David. He is three years old and has blue eyes, dirty blond hair and is a scooter! He scoots around eating cookies, dropping cookie crumbs on the floor, messing my room, tearing my homework, kicking my cat, and grabbing cookies again. He takes a pit stop only for his nap and T.V. I remember a terrible day when my brother was one and a half years old. We were getting ready to go to Great America. My Mom, David, Jackie, and I were going. Suddenly, Mom's button flew off! She exclaimed, "0 dear! My button came off." She went to find her sewing kit. She then found it, but she didn't know that an open safety pin fell out of her sewing kit. Suddenly, while my Mom was sewing on the button, David started throwing up! "What's the matter David?" asked my mother. "Oh dear, dear!" My mother quickly rushed David to the hospital. Into the operating room went David! I was the one who had to sit in the waiting room. I waited for hours. Was it boring?! The doctor came out and said that David had swallowed an open safety pin! Well, finally my dad came and took me home. Then it came to me. We_ couldn't go to Great America! Boy was I mad! My brother stayed in the hospital for the night and he came home in the morning with a hospital night-gown on. Did he look silly! So now we keep our safety pins away from David. Alex Glynn

CLASS HISTORY Now all my years at Trinity Parish and Phillips Brooks are coming to an end. As I look back on these seven years I remember great things. In kindergarten Mrs. Lyman was very kind and she always had a band-aid on hand. I learned a great deal in first grade because Miss Root was a great teacher. In second grade we did The Sound of Music. Tasha would often come to school. We had a superb Hobby Show in third grade with our wonderful teacher, Mrs. Monnot. In fourth grade, Mrs. Landreth provided great field trips including the overnight to Inverness We also filmed a spectacular movie! Mr. T. was a great math teacher in fifth grade, and Mrs. Westmoreland taught me very much (especially English and History)! We had exciting field trips to the Exploratoriurn, State Capi tol , etc. Here I am in sixth grade with the fantastic teacher, Mrs. Altrocchi, who has something in common with Mrs. Westmoreland, English! Although it gets boring at times, I'll always remember what they taught me! Now we are approaching the Science Fair, the Picnic, graduation, and other memorable events. I have learned very much from other teachers in my seven years at this school. Marcia and Stan have had a great P.E. program at Phillips Brooks. I especially have to thank Mr. T. for making Phillips Brooks the great school it is, and I hope everybody at Phillips Brooks School in years to come has as much fun and learns as much as I did! We'll miss you, P.B.S! Lisa Anderson NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS THAT I MADE IN 4TH GRADE... Things that I will do this year: I will try to do more practicing for my piano. I will try to be nice to my family and not so mean. I will try to study more for school. I will try not to be so noisy. Things I want to do this year: I want to finish my measure that I started. I want to see my cousin again. I want to go to Lake Tahoe with my grandparents. I want to be friends with Tamako as long as I can. - Laurice Cheung Resolutions: I will I will

CLASS HISTORY My years I have spent at Trinity Parish and Phillips Brooks School have been very fulfilling. Although I hate school, my years have been super 1 First, I will start off with kindergarten through 4th grade at Trinity and 5th and 6th at Phillips Brooks School. Kindergarten - Mrs. Lyman was a very nice teacher as I remember. She devoted most of her time to us although we really didn't understand much. 1st Grade - Miss Root was great. Even though she was strict and pulled you by the ear lots of times, it was a nice class. 2nd Grade - 2nd grade classs wasn't really what I remember best but Miss Schwarz was great because she put so much time into our stupendous plays. 3rd Grade - Mrs. Monnot was one of the nicest teachers in 3rd grade. If you said you had to go to the bathroom during class, she would say, "We might as well put diapers on you and give you a bottle! It was a pretty good class. 4th Grade - 4th was the best class out of all of them, partly because we went on so many fun, and I mean fun field trips. Mrs. Landreth was a super teacher. 5th Grade - Mrs. Westmoreland was strict but one of the most excellent teachers because I learned a lot from her. 6th Grade - 6th grade, this year, was the greatest of them all. What makes it so terrific is that we get to do a lot of fun things like make the yearbook, go on a bay trip, etc....... Even though Mrs. Altrocchi piles on most of our homework, it was an excellent class, I mean, THE CLASS OF ‘80! People I haven't mentioned like Mrs. Palmer, Mrs. Harvey, and Mrs. Cargile I'm sorry about because you did a great job too! But this school wouldn't have been so great if it wasn't for Mr. Towner. When I leave this school, a time as I did! See Ya!

I hope that the other Morgan Sch

I'M A HORSE-SHOE Hello, my name is Shod. I am sitting in a lonely and smelly barn. My friend said I would be put on one of those humongous, light-footed, weird-looking, but smart horses. Today is the day I get put on. Here comes the Blacksmith. This place is worse than the barn. Now I am on this truck and pretty soon I will be put on a horse. This horse is ugly-looking but nice. He trots me around a lot. The other shoes are nice to me, but I've never met them in person. Today is the day I died, because the horseshoer will take me off and I will be dead. So good-by. SHOWING AT SANTA BARBARA On June 17th, 1980, Jenny, my trainer, Beth, my friend, and I were on our way to the Santa Barbara Show, which started on the 19th. Also coming were our three horses, Delphi, Cappy, and Christopher. They were in the trailer. We had started our journey at *t:00 a.m., and it was now nearing 2:00 p.m. "There's the city limit. We're finally here! the stables about 2:15 or 2:30," Jenny said.

We'll be at

"Whew. Finally!" Beth and I replied. When we got to the stables the show committee got three stalls together, a tack box, and another large stall for us to sleep in. "Let's get our sleeping bags out!" Jenny said, so we got them out of the truck. With the sleeping bags, we got our brushes and other grooming and veterinary tools. We got the horses out and put them in their stalls and fed them. Then we cleaned our tack. On the morning of the show, Beth and I competed in the same class. She got first, and I got second. Then we had a hunter class. I won and she got second. On and off all through the show. In the end, I got "hi-point," and she got "reserve". On the way home, Beth and I were happy, but we felt mentally drained. Pilar Woodman

PABLUM Pablum is the best pony I ever rode. She is 12.2 hands high. Pablum is a good pony; she got me second place in my first show. She is being sold by Pilar Woodman, her owner. Pablum is a bay, and part Welsh.

Her mane is thick and fluffy.

Pablum is the most wonderful, cutest, gentlest pony I ever knew. Allison Sumner

AN UNFORGETTABLE DAY One day I was frolicking around with my brother and sister in a green meadow streaked with sunlight. Then ail of a sudden the clouds started covering the sun and a big piece of something fell from the sky in front of us. Luckily, we brought our sweaters. After five minutes of staring, my brother said, “Why don't you get somebody before you get paralyzed from staring at that!" “Who?" I asked, “And where?" “Go to the end of this meadow, turn right, go two blocks down and stop at the Missing Person's place. I guess your mind has been paralyzed." I had a hard time running because of two things. One, I was awkward and I kept falling down, and two, mainly because the wind was stronger than ever and it was blowing against me. By the time I got there, I had fallen for the twenty-ninth time. I made it my thirtieth when I fell into the place. A man said, “Oh, hi, Sally, I've been expecting you. I got al1 the bananas together so — ?“ "I'm not Sally," I answered, “and I don't want any bananas." “Oh I'm sorry. May I help you?" said the surprised man. “Yes. Did anybody lose someone from the sky?" 1 asked. “No, I don't think so. Let me check," said the man, thumbing through the files. While he was doing that, I looked around. He had two secretaries typing and staring at me, I felt rather stupid. Just then a girl came in. The man looked up and said, “Hi, Sally, I got all the bananas together for you." “Thanks. Do you know what I'm going to use them for?" she asked. “No. What?" he said. Then they started chit-chatting and forgot about me for at least twenty minutes. “Excuse me, but I am going," I said, rather annoyed, after a while. I .went back to the meadow. When I got there my brother yelled, “Did you get anyone?" “No." I said. “ I left." “What for?" he asked. I made up an excuse. “Because it smelled rotten in there. I was about to suffocate!" “You dummy! But it doesn't matter now. I figured out what it is. It's a piece of Skylab that fell." “What Skylab?" I asked stupidly. “You don't know anything do you! I 'm going to the nearest Astronaut Base. You stay here," he yelled running. I got bored so I played leap frog with my sister. It didn't work out too well because every time I leaned on her she fell. Finally my brother came back with a couple of people. The people thanked us and told us that they would put the piece of Skylab to recycle. After that I checked my watch and it said 8:30. “We better get going. Bye!" 'I yelled. When we got home my mother got into a rage. happened and she forgave us. Whew! Relief!

I told her what

THE DAY I MET THE MERCERIANS When I woke up, I looked outside and saw a glowing light coming down straight for my house. I awakened my parents and we all went outside. By that time I could see that the glowing light had been a flying saucer and it had crashed in front of us into the ground. Out came three purple Mercerians with laser guns. My family and I ran back into the house and locked ourselves in our rooms. I heard the Mercerians walking down the hallway to my room. Suddenly they were banging on my door to get in. I went into my closet and got out my 22. Then I ran behind the door. Suddenly the door flew open. Just as the Mercerians stepped into my room, I let'em have it. The next thing I knew my parents walked in and the Mercerians were on the floor. We dragged them outside, put them into their spaceship, fixed their spaceship, and set them flying into space. Then we went off to have some breakfast. Rob Torbett

THE SWANALLI TREASURE One dreary but cloudy day, my friend, Burt List, asked me to plow two of his four fields. He was quite rich because he loved to look for treasure and always found lots of it. He had ancient bowls and spoons and things from the time before Christ. Burt was a quiet man who looked weathered by the wind and rain. The only person he would show his treasure to was me. Anyway, if you kept the treasure, you had to go to jail if you didn't turn the treasure in to the police. Burt and I had become friends when we flew in the Air Force together. We both flew 57 missions in the Second World War. Wqll, anyway, I went over to his house at 8:00 in the morning. When I plowed fields I usually used a wooden peg so if it broke I could use another without any trouble, and it also wouldn't leave the plow behind. I started plowing back and forth across the field when the peg broke. I thought I had run over a rock until I saw something glimmer. It was green with rust and very neat-looking. i dug it out and it was a silver piece the size of a truck tire. I ran back to get Burt and he came quickly. We started to dig and dug out more and more. When we were done we had dug out seventy-three pieces of silver. Spoons, bowls, plates, etc. Burt was so excited he took them home. I did not take home the treasure because I didn't want it or need it. I didn't see him for the next three years because he was very busy cleaning the rest of the treasure. When I did see Burt again he was in jail. The police had found the treasure on an International Search of every home in Swanalli. The museum the treasure was given to named it the Swanalli Treasure because the police found it in Swanalli. My friend, Burt List, 87, died of old age in jail. Morgan Schi11ing

MY BROTHER One night my brother said that he didn't want to go to chapel. My parents kept on saying that it would be fun and that Mr. Towner was going to talk to them. But my brother said, "No, no, no, I don't want to go to chapel I" My parents said that he had to. My brother cried for about one and a half hours. I told him all these lies about how I just loved chapel when I was in Kindergarten. He stopped for a moment, but cried again. (By the way my brother's name is Naohisa.) Finally it was time for bed. Tomozo, who is also my brother, kept on yelling, "Dada, mama, papal" Naohisa stopped crying and laughed. Then he went to bed. The next morning, Naohisa yelled, "I don't want to go to Chapel 1!" Everyone told him for the last time that it would be fun. He didn't say a thing. He went to Kindergarten all right. He also went to chapel. He waved at me several times. I wondered if he liked chapel. On my way back home, my dad said that Naohisa called his office and said, "I liked chapel so much!" Then 1 said, "I knew he would like chapel !" I went back home and Naohisa kept yelling that he wanted to go to chapel every day! Then we all told him that we don't go to chapel every day. He yelled again that he wanted to go and that caused another argument. Tamako Yahagi

MY FAVORITE THING My favorite thing is my Mongoose. It has a mongoose frame, forks, pedals, cranks, handlebars, and motomag 11's . My bike also has a messenger seat, grab-on grips, and a chrome-molly tuff neck. I like my bike because it is fun to go off jumps with and I also have a dirt-bike course in my back and front yards. It is really fun riding my bike. Rick Canton

A TRIP TO MEXICO My mother went to Mexico on April 13th. She came back on April 16th. When she came back she had brought me a Mexican pen that looks like a Mexican boy. The boy is wearing a red and black sombrero and a green, red, blue, yellow, and white serape. She also gave me a silver ring, a bracelet, and a silver necklace. Last of all she brought back the most gorgeous purse that I have ever seen. It is red and white. It has three big pockets and two little ones. I am very happy with all my presents. Buddy Henriksen

A SCARY NIGHT ON THE BEACH One vacation I went down to Santa Barbara to visit my dad. One night, we went down to Carpenteria to visit some friends that lived on the beach. One of my good friends lived there. Later that night, my friend, Jolly, and I went for a walk on the beach. We had walked about one-fourth of a mile when we saw a flash light shining at us. At first we didn't know what it was, but then we realized what it was and stood there watching. Then we saw a group of eight or ten teenage boys coming towards us. They started to run, so we turned around and ran as fast as we could the long way back. We turned back a little way before we were at her house and they were walking. Then they turned around and started back to where they had come from. When we came in the house and told everyone what had happened, nobody believed us so we took my dad back to where we had gone. We found the boys who, as soon as they saw my dad, jumped in their cars and drove away because they thought he was going to do something to them. That is one of the scariest things that has ever happened to me! Christina McLeod

THE OPEN DOOR One day I was walking down the road. I had just finished babysitting the Johnson twins a good mile away from my house. I had to walk home at 9:00 p.m. The sky was dark and gloomy and the road 1ike a wet sponge. Suddenly it started to rain. I ran for an old house so I wouldn't get wet. Suspiciously I opened the door of the deserted mansion. The old wreck was covered in Spider webs and was falling apart everywhere. I went upstairs quietly and scared. When I opened the door, I felt a cold breeze push against my face. I began to walk forward slowly and then began to f .. 3 fall and , . f fall farther ^ and farther. It was pitch dark. All I could see were colorful, gloomy faces. I started a long dreary scream. I stopped because I knew it was no use. I began to feel like a spinning top. At a moment's notice, I stopped. Surprised and unsure, I got up. The room was pink with black dots. There were three doors in the smill room. I chose the middle door. Slowly I turned the knob. As I carefully opened it, I felt a huge kick. I found mySelf in my house in front of the door. Quickly I opened the door. The porch was there as usual. I will never forget that night as long as I live. Jill Baneth

THE MYSTERY OF THE FIVE MEN "What is that noise?" Joe asked? "I have no idea," Jerry said. "Why don't we go out and investigate!"

Marcus exclaimed.

That was the beginning of the mysterious story of the five men. It all started out on a windy day when the fog was piled up to as far as you can see. It was at about one o'clock in the afternoon when there was a loud thump! Five men went out to the big dirt field in British Columbia and started to investigate. All they saw was a piece of wood about six feet four and one foot in width. One of the men, Marcus, was a scientist who had a Ph.D. and a science degree. They looked at the strange thing for almost fifteen minutes. Two of the men, Joe and Jerry, walked very fast to the truck and brought back a camera and five shovels. Jerry, Joe, Marcus, Scott and Jim started to dig. After five hours of being in the cold, they got to a little handle in the thing. It was now six-thirty in the night and they still had to find out what it was. They got big floodlights out there and still kept digging. Finally they came to another little handle. They were able to open the thing up. They got it open after five minutes. It was a tomb, a big tomb like King Tut's. They found steps. They walked down each one of them being very cautious. It was now five o'clock in the next evening and they got to the room. It was amazing! All of a sudden, they heard a scream, and they all dropped dead. Joe, Jerry, Marcus, Scott and Jim were dead! That was the mystery of the five men.

It is still not solved. Heather Smi th

ON A DARK NIGHT It was a dark and stormy night and the fog was as thick as buttermilk. My mother and father had gone out for dinner and I was alone in the house. I had already eaten dinner and I didn't have anything to do, so I decided to go up in the attic to watch television. The trees were lashing against the house, and somewhere far off a dog howled. It gave me chills. I turned the channel because I really wasn't up to watching Creature Features. Nothing was on, so I decided to stick with Happy Horrors. I suddenly heard a faint tapping at the window. I did not dare turn and see what was causing the noise. It was then that I was aware I was being watched. As I slowly turned around, I noticed a shadow in the far corner. I could feel myself getting very wan. Suddenly a grovelling, bleeding human stepped out of the corner ... I fainted., when I awoke I was lying on my bed. I turned and looked on my bed table; there was a bottle of excess blood. The figure was standing erect against the wall. Apparently he had hanged himself. Suddenly I awoke from this horrible nightmare! Wendy Osborne

UNDERWATER VISIT One day in my life, I was in Italy. I was swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. I was three years old and was floating in the crystal clear water on a plastic ring. The rest of my family was on the beach. I was by myself. Karen, my make believe friend, was playing a game with me. Suddenly I felt myself being pulled through the hole of my ring. I can remember going down to the bottom of the sea. I could see the rocks and sand on the bottom. My sister looked to check up on me. She didn't see me. She dove in and saved me. I had lots of water inside of me. I will never for get that moment when I was being tugged through the ring and was sitting on the bottom of the sea floor. Alex A1trocchi

AN OLD FRIEND Wearing a gray-blue skirt and top, she stood tall in the doorway. Her whitish-grayish hair was curled on top of her head. With a polite "hello" she greeted me, put her soft hand in mine, and I walked down the hallway with the elderly woman, I looked up at her, and remembered when she used to care for me when I was younger. Her perfume gave her a fresh, clean, scent. I felt proud walking with such a loving, caring woman. With the determined look on her face, she looked so powerful I We talked about the past, and I wanted to cry because I hadn't seen her in so long. Also, because we are very close friends. I always remember her with a fun game, an interesting story, or some tasty candy. What I liked most of all was the fact that she was there to be my friend, to care for me, or to just be there when I needed her. Li sa Anderson

AN UNFORGETTABLE CHARACTER The weirdest character I ever met was Bill Griffith. Bill Griffith is the creator of Zipper the Pinhead, Griffith Observatory, and much more. Bill didn't become known until 1979 with Zippy the Pinhead. The day I first saw him, I thought, "What a strange person!" He looked like, he had not shaved in two days and he seemed to have dressed very hastily. In the end though Bill was really a very nice person. Oh, and before I forget, Bill Griffith is also a contributor to other mags (l just can't remember which ones). Jay Pi tts

HOCKEY Down on the field there is a mad rush for the hockey sticks. Somebody is yelling, "Save one for Mr. Towner!" Finally the game begins. Mr. Towner drops the ball, and gets out of the way. There are a couple of minor skirmishes for control of the ball, and it soon comes down the field towards an opposing goal with somebody right behind it. A couple of people join up, and pretty soon the ball goes through. Two people have their shins busted, and some body almost had a broken finger. It's not an easy game. Somebody down the field is yelling, "Popcorn, splints, bandages." He is now being hit with a hockey stick. The game goes on for about an hour, and everyone in the turmoi1 is happy. David Keith

A DOLLAR BILL Today is the opening day for a new dollar to be born. The dollar bill just happens to be me. Today is the one I've been looking forward to for years, well at least months, no maybe it was weeks. Well, anyway, I can't wait. Most dollar bills are not as excited as I am because they think all people do is put them in their smelly pockets or fold them up in a million squares. Everyone, I'm not going to let them do it to me. Ladies and gentlemen, children and pets, a star is born. Kirsten Lighthouse FLYING LESSONS The day was warm and the light poured through the little crack I had made last night. I looked out through the small crack in the shell and saw the bright sun gleaming above me. I picked at the shell some more. The crack was now wide enough to step through. Outside everything was quiet and a small breeze occasionally blew the trees' leaves. No one was around so I chirped as loud as I could. Then a dark shadow moved slowly over me. I looked up; it was my mother. I watched how gracefully she slowly drifted into the nest. She told me I was going to learn to fly. First she showed me how to strengthen my muscles. Then she flew off the nest and came back. She said, "Now you try it." I began to tremble; my stomach muscles began to knot. I looked down. It was really a long way down. Suddenly I fell off of the nest. The ground seemed to be pulling me down. Then, all at once, my mother swooped down and grabbed me by my left wing. That was a close one! Wendy Osborne

v She was dressed in an orange flame-colored dress. Her shoes were black with pointed toes. She had a string of fake pearls around her neck, which almost choked her. Her glasses were pointed with little sparkles in them. Her face was like an old prune. Her nose was pointed like a broken finger. Her face had seen many a day. Her hair was matted down to her head. Her teeth were stained with a yellow film. Her voice was as creaky as a rusty old saw. She was very tall. She also was very skinny and as bony as a skeleton. She was very mean and was not the kind who liked to be around children. She was the quiet type. She acted like she was in another world. She never touched her hair, and never brushed her teeth. She would get out of bed in the morning, and then lock herself in the bath room. No one knows what she did in there, but she would spend hours in that room. All she ever did was sit and look at the picture of her dead mother. There was something about her, that we may never know. Sarah Hinman
