FROM THE MYSTERIOUS WORLD OF MAGIC, THE SECOND GRADE PRESENTS: ONCE I MET A MAGIC FROG By Sanne Henriksen Once I met a magic frog. It was blue and purple. I took it home and when I got there, I said, "Can I keep him?" So my mom said, "yes, if you take care of him." So I took care of him. One day I was taking a walk and I saw the frog turn into a handsome young man and the man was magic. He turned a girl frog into a pretty lady and the lady and man lived happily ever after. »

A MAGIC CRYSTAL by David Osborne a magic crystal in some dirt in my backyard. I put it in my pocket and suddenly I started to flyl I landed in a strange place, and it was beautiful, but very still. Nothing was moving. Bit then I heard rustling in the bushes, so I ran and hid behind a tree. It was a man and he startled me. So I said, "Can I fly?" And I flew back to my own backyard. #

THE MAGIC WAND

by Donny Nordln Once I was walking down the road, when I saw a magio wand. I thought it was a stick, but then I looked at it again. I went in the street, got it, and went back to my house. When I showed it to my mom, she said to show it to my dad. So I did and he said it was a really magic wand, but not to wish and point it at my head. I went to my room. I did not obey what my dad said. So I wished that I could go to an island that no one has been to before. I pointed it at my head and in a snap, I was there. It was called Goon Island. There was a swamp there. A whole bunch of weird things lived there. I heard a voice say my name. It sounded like a ghost so I ran and ran until I saw some goons. The goons have feathers on their heads and are such strange creatures. I was really frightened. Now I wished I had done what my dad told me to. So I looked around to see if I had that wand. I did, so I said, "Take me to my house." I hit it on my head and in a snap I was home. Then my dad said it was time for dinner. While I was eating, my dad said, "I think you should put the wand back." So I put it back, and when I got home, it was time to go to bed. «

MY MAGIC BAT SHOES by John Kinkead Once I went to the park and I found a pair of magic shoes that had a bat's wing on each side of them and had a bat's face in the front. I tried them on. One tried to attack me, but I flew up and he bumped into a giant tree. Another tried to chase me, but I ran and took off and flew home. #

MY MAGIC PENCIL BY Marie Once upon a time I was walking home from school and on the sidewalk was a pencil. I decided to take it home. At the dinner table I told my mom and dad that I found a pencil. The next morning I brought it to school. I passed it around my class, but no one claimed it. That night when I was in bed, a fairy came. She came out of nowhere! When my eyes opened, it was bright. She said that pencil I had was very powerful. "Use it only on the people that you don't like. And then she disappeared. The next morning we went on a trip to Egypt. We went to the king's palace. He said, "Let me see that pencil." Then he said, "Draw me a picture with that pencil." I drew a picture of him i n a storm on a ship. Then the picture began to move. The real king disappeared! My mom punished me when we got home. I learned my lessonnever to pick up a pencil on the sidewalkl *

THE MAGIC RAY by David Conlan

f*

Once I went to a laboratory. It was a strange one. d bubbles overflowing out of the bottles and a half-dissected shark. It was gruesome! His name was Sklnneektry. He was one of those mean kinds. Then I saw a switch. Boy, was it weird; it had a creepy look. He did not let me even go near it. But when he was asleep, I tried to get out of the room. He caught me and locked the room. But I was able to get out. I grabbed a stool quietly and climbed up on top of it and turned on the switch. I managed to get out with the man still asleep. Soon I was really, really, really startled. After a half-hour I realized that the switch was for no ordinary ray. It WAS A MAGIC RAY!!I Finally I got to New York. I wished I had an airplane. ZAP! Theitwas a shiny, gold and red Jet plane. Then I wished for a chauffeeured limousine with a TV in it, a mansion with a swimming pool, a hundred acres of land with 20 apple trees, 50 horses, 60 monkeys, 13 dogs, and 16 cats to chase off the rats and mice. I became a king when I was years old. Boy, was it fun! When I wanted to buy something, I would Just snap my fingers and ZAP - there was dollars for a ten-speed bike. In Christmas I got toys for my kids, and it was a great life. I had a ya< clubhouse and lived happily ever after.

MY MAGIC SHOES by David

One day I went to a shoe store. I bought a pair of nice looking shoes. But when I put them on, I did not believe my eyes! When I touched the door (it is hard to explain, but) it burned up in flames. And so did the door, after the door knob! From then on I never wore those shoes agalnf *

THE MAGIC HAT Tjy Sean Huang When I was a little boy, I always played a game called the Magic Hat. Every time I played the game, my mother said, "How come you always play the same game?" When I grew up, I had a lot of friends. I had a friend over to my house and he gave me a present. He said, "Guess what it is?" So I said,"A magic hat!" "Yes, you're right," he said. I was so surprised that I had to cry. Then I was on a show and everybody liked me. *

TWO ORIGINAL ^AOCOUNTS^OF THE FIRST THANKSGIVING: THE PILGRIMS MEET THE INDIANS by Jorge Del Rio When the pilgrims landed at Cape Cod, they did not know what to do. Pretty soon they knew what to do. They built up houses and they slept on the floor. Then they sent for an Indian, but he did not know much, so they sent another Indian and that Indian knew more than the other Indian. He teached children how to pop popcorn and the children were happy, the pilgrims were happy, and the Indians were happy. So they made a Thanksgiving feast and all the Indians came. That was the story. *

THE THANKSGIVING STORY by Casey Lynch There once were very many people called the pilgrims. They had a very mean king; he did not let them worship God in their own way. And if his men found them doing that, they would whip them. So they decided to hire a crew, and so they did. Once there was enough, they sailed out on the Mayflower. A great storm came up and there was lightning and dark clouds, Then the next morning the look-out yelled, ''Land, hoi" They did not know it, but they had landedat Cape Cod. Some men went on the land and then they started to clear the land.. Some pilgrims saw Indians! Then they shot at each other. Winter came and many died. By harvest time, the Indians had had it with them. An Indiancame right up to the pilgrims and spoke English. He showed them how to do ^ev^rything and then they had a friend. *

THREE ORIGINAL STORIES INSPI

ID BY A TRIP TO THE STANFORD MUSEUM:

THE PIECE OF JADE by Christopher Massey One ~day I was walking on the side of a mountain in Burma. I was a scientist and I was looking for a piece of jade. Then I saw something shiny and dug it up. It was a huge piece of jade. And then I remembered I knew a jade carver. I took it to him and in six years he had carved a beautiful teapot. But I never used it yet because it's so beautiful!

WHEN I SAW LELAND STANFORD by Stacy Beugen Once I went to the Stanford Museum with my class. I started to walk upstairs without my class and I saw a little case. I walked up to it and I saw a person wrapped in the case. I looked

around the corner and I saw Leland Stanford, Jr. himself! I was so surprised to see him. I ran down the stairs and

Once there was a dirty coffin, and so a mummy rose from the coffin. This place was in Egypt. They were very scared, so the people who saw the mummy went to a museum and asked a docent what to do about a wandering mummy. They said "Try to take a picture of him. Then bring his picture back, because I can tell what to do, because there are different kinds of mummies." So she took a picture of the mummy and took it to the docent. She said she would come over and try to catch the mummy. So she caught him and put him back in his coffin and strapped him back up. And she said he would never rise again! *

AND NOW. BACK TO THE LAND O F MAGIC............ ZOOKEE. THE MAGIC SLED by Julie Altrocchi One day I asked my mother if I could go out into the woods. "Yes, you may," said my mother. So I went to the woods. When I got there I saw a little boy. He came up to me and said, "Do you want to buy a magic sled?: I said, "Why would I want to buy a sled in spring?" "Because it is a magic sled; it can go not only on snow, but on anything." "Oh, well, o.k., but how much does it cost?" "It costs one dollar." "Wait her." And I ran to get a dollar. When I got the dollar, I went back to the woods and there he waswaiting for me. "Here I am," I said. I gave him the dollar and he gave me the sled. I named the sled Zookee. I found out Zookee was like my friend's go-cart. So I asked my mother if I could go for a little trip on Zookee. She said, Yes." So I got on Zookee and we were off. He took me to a place called "Kids' Land" It was fun, but then finally it was time to go. We went home. I fell asleep on Zookee, but he drove home.__ #

MY MAGIC WAND by David Apple

I was walking down a street and saw a magic shop. Its name was Magic Wands. I went in and saw my friends Sam and Jim. we talked a little while. Then I bought a wand and asked Sam and Jim to come with me. Jim said yes and so did Sam. We went outside and I used my magic wand to make a car. ZAP! Then we went to the desert. My friends were thirsty, so I used my magic wand to make two glasses of water for them. ZAP! there they were. All of us did not like the desert, so ZAP, I made a time machine. We got in the time machine and zoomed away. We landed in dinosaur time. We got out and there was a dinosaur. He almost hit me with his tail. I dropped my magic wand and then he chased us away into the jungle very far. Then we found a cave to sleep in. The cave was very cold. I woke up and searched for my magic wand so I could go home. Oh, no, a dinosaur! I'll try to find my way back to the camp we found. My magic wand, I found it! ZAP! A cave! Nowto hide in it. " Magic wand, take me to my friends." ZAP! "Hey, you guys, this magic wand can take us to the time machine so we can go back. "Yippee," said Sam. "Yippee," said Jim. ZAP! We were at the time machine. We all got in. ZAP! We were at the car. We got in the car and got in line for gas. Then we went home and had a celebration. Then Sam and Jim went home.

MY MAGIC HAT by Greta Eustace One day my mother went out of town. It was a very rainy day. I have always wanted a magic hat. And do you know what? My mother called me and sai<L“l have a surprise for you." But there is one thing wrong. Sne said it would come in the mail. I hate the mail; it takes too long. But one day I found a big box.' I opened it and there was my magic hat! When my mom came back, she said, "Did you get your pink hat? But I said to my mom, "I have a black hat." But when my dad walked into the room, he said, "Did you get your pink hat?" "I don't have a pink hat. l$y dad answered again, "Well, then, did you get a black hat?" "Yes, I did get a black hat." My dad said it was a magic hat. And I am glad I solved the mystery.

MORGAN. THE MAGIO PONY by Jessica Collins Hi! I am "Lori. I was walking in the woods and I heard a sound in the bushes. It was a pony! And I said, "What is your name? The pony said, "Morgan." I said, "Well, my name is Lori."

Morgan said, "I am am magic." So I said, "Morgan, then show me some of your magic." So he did. He knocked down a tree by touching it with his nose. So I took him home, and Mom said we could keep Morgan if he cooked. And Morgan said, "Yes, I cook." And lived happily ever after. *

MY MAGIC SET by Cortney Lighthouse One day I was sick and my mom bought me a magic set with a hat, a wand, and also some magic tricks. At last I felt better. Every time I wanted to play with my magic set, my sister or brother would come along and say it was not really magic. It was only pretend. But they always got caught by my mom and dad. But one day, I tried it and it worked I turned two cookies into dogs. And so then I brought the magic set to school. I tried it and it did not work. I thought maybe it was not really magic after all. Then I looked down and it said the battery was worn out.

THE MAGIC WAND by Oraig Bachler One day I was gathering sticks for a fire. I saw a stick that was black in the middle and on the edges it was white, but a stick is a stick. And so I brought it home and put it in the fire. When I was asleep, that funny stick rolled out of the fire and into my room. I woke up and looked at it very closely. I found out that it was a magic wand. I picked it up and threw it out the window! And I learned never to pick up a stick with black in the middle and white on the edges. •

THE CAMPING TRIP One day Kevin, Gaylen, and I, and Skipper and Primo were going on a camping trip. Kevin brought his go-cart. We packed our tents and went. Kevin was the driver. We were riding for ten miles until we got there. Then we set up our tents and had dinner and went to sleep. At night a small Big Foot came into Kevin's sleeping-bag. In the morning Kevin took the Big Foot out and showed it to us. Kevin named him Little Foot. After breakfast we went on a hike. Kev brought Little Foot with us. We met one of Little Foot's friends. His name was Oscar the Bear. Then we went back to camp, had lunch, and went rock hunting. Little Foot found an arrowhead, Kevin found fool's gold, Gaylen found eight crystals, and I found eight shiny rocks. Then we went to camp and shared all of our rocks, had dinner, and went to sleep. Jon Kitamura THE CIRCUS Last year my family went to the circus. The tiger act had just started. My brother and I got all excited. Next there were the trapeze artists: what a bore that was ! THE BOY WHO WANTED EVERYTHING

Once, there was a child who wanted everything. He found it very hard to catch a butterfly's wing. He decided to quit, Had a big, big fit, And sat on the ground and kicked and kicked! He still wanted everything, there was no doubt And when he d i d n ’t get it, he started to pout. They all got tired of this little boy And spanked him like a little toy. He didn't cry because he felt too shy. So the mother said, "You're very queer! Next time it happens I'll be very severe!!!" Now this boy is totally quiet. He's so quiet, he's a riot!

THE SETTLER WOMAN OF SAN JUAN BAUTISTA My name is Isabel White. I'm a woman in the early mission years. I live in San Juan Bautista in a cabin with only a bed, a rocker, a stove, a table and two chairs. Every morning I looked out and saw the horses pulling carriages. Once a week I went to the Plaza Stable and borrowed the corn grinder so I could make corn bread. Once every month there is a contest to see who can make the best corn bread. I lost the last contest, (the grand prize was a tea kettle), but I came in second so I received a woven belt. The Church is my favorite place and on service days I always go there. I like to see the footprints of the mountain lions in the tile floor. One day I saw a poster. It said . . . B I G

F I G H T ! ! !

Bull against Bear Tuesday, March 27 DON'T MISS IT ! I hurried and bought a ticket. I rushed over to the Plaza and got the last seat. It was neat. The bad part was when the bull's horns went deep into the bear's stomach. That was the end. Later, I saw another poster. It was for a party that night at the Plaza Hall. I couldn't wait! The party was greatI I never laughed like this in 3 8 years, because the councilman spilled punchl Well, this is how it was in the olden days. By

THE HOCKEY STORY Once there was a boy who played hockey all the time. He played and played until finally he turned into a hockey stick. When he came home from school his mother fainted. He cried and he kicked and screamed "Boo Hoo" for hours. When he went to bed he prayed that God would turn him back into himself. God sprinkled a little dust on him. POOF! He was back to normal and he never ever played hockey again. By <1^

THE COUGAR SAM The Trip I live in the m o u n t a i n s and work fo r a company that catches wil d animals, espec i a l l y cougars, for zoos. The m o r n i n g of m y trip I looked out the window. It had rained and the r a i n b o w had shown itself. All the forest and m o u n t a i n creatures had come out. I had b r eakfast and took my catching equipment outside. Soon I started off on m y trip to catch a cougar. I started towards the woods. As soon as I got there I h eard some scratching. It was a raccoon. Furrol I thought that was a snake! Snakes are k n o w n to come out from nowhere. They will strike y o u r body, then slit h e r away. Squeak! Squeak! A field mouse! I thought for a m i n u t e what the woods and forest would be like w i t h o u t these c r e a tures. W h e n I got to the edge of the woods before me stood the g r assland plain. A f t e r that stood the hom e of co u g a r - the mountains! The Right One When I got into the field I saw a lot of mice, about 200 of them. I saw a weasel, too, and m any birds. A cool breeze flew by my chin. There was a long w a y to go. I had to stop. It was just too hot. Eve n that cool breeze did not help. I sat down, got out m y canteen, and took a gulp. I was tired and night was coming. Then I saw s o m e t h i n g - it was a cougar! Q u i c k l y I got out my gu n and put a tra n q u i l i z e r in it. The cougar saw me! He started to run. I pulled the trigger. He fell down! All I had to do then was to put the net ar o u n d him. W h e n this was done I thought for a minute. I think I'll call h i m Sam!

CRAZY SATURDAY MORNING One Saturday morning, I got up and got dressed for Pony Club, as usual, and went to watch TV. I turned on the TV, got a bowl of cereal, and sat down to watch TV. I was in the library. There is a window right next to my chair. When I bent down I saw my reflec tion in the window. "Oh, my gosh, I've got six legs!" Right then and there I turned off the TV and marched up to my room. When my mom came in I said, "I feel sick." She asked to take my temperature. "Well, O.K.," I said. "You don't have a fever," she said. "Why don't you get up and dressed and maybe you will feel better?" "But Mom! I feel sick!" I whined. "Well, then, come down for breakfast in your bathrobe and slippers." "Mom, I have to tell you something." "What?" "I've got six legs." "II? YOU WHAT l!I!I??" "I've got six legs," I yelled. "Let me see!" I showed her. "EEEEEEEEEEEEEK! I" she screamed. "I will have to take you to the Hospital and have them cut off four of your legs!" "NO WAY!Il IT WILL HURT! ! I" "Let's go," she ordered. I had no choice. Then I woke up and, thank goodness, it was only a dream!

NEW YORK Hil I am a tennis shoe in New York, New York. What is that up there? Oh, it's the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and we are going inside. I guess we are going to stay there. Now we are going on a boat trip around Manhattan Island. There is the Empire State Building and the World Trade Towers and the Statue of Liberty. I have to look way up to see these things and they are so big! Oh boy! Boston! Top of the John Hancock Tower. I can see all of Boston - Old North Church, Boston Tea Party, Harvard, M.I.T., the Amphitheater, Trinity Church. Hey! I'm looking down at all of these things. Hey! I can see the statue of Phillips Brooks. "Hi there, Phillips. How are you?" He won't answer me. Oh yes, he's a statue. Now we are walking back to the hotel. Down this street, around the corner, way down the street two more blocks... Finally we are back in the lobby of the hotel. All this in the pouring rain and I'm all soaking wetsquish, squish, squish! Lisa Anderson TENNIE My name is Tennie. I come from Jumping Jacks. I'm going to tell you what I did one day. I was dirty, because Christl had been running in the mud. "Time for school," said Christl's mother. Oh no, here comes smelling feet. "Christl," said Mother. "I'll have to put your shoes in the wash before you go to play." "Okay,Mom," said Christl. Oh no, I don't want to go in the wash. After she washed m e .... "I'm going outside, Mom," said Christl. Splash! Yuck! Now I'm all muddy! Christl Kirchner LEAVE ME ALONE Hurry! Today was the day I could ride my bike to Macy's to get my new coat. As I locked my bike, I began to tnink how nice it would be if I had a friend to play with me. I went inside the store and saw the coat and bought it. Then I decided to look around. I went to the toy department and pulled out a toy box. Just then a little furry thing poked its head out and said, "Hi, my name is Guy." I was so surprised that an animal could talk that I fell right on my back. When I stood up, I asked him what kind of animal he was and he said he was a mini-monkey. That made me laugh so hard the clerk had to come over to me and tell me to be quiet. I knew I must have been dreaming, so I just walked away. I went to the T.V. department and looked at T.V.'s and sure enough, there was Guy. I asked him to please leave me alone! Then he began to cry and he said, "No one wants me." I felt so sad that I said to him, "Don't cry. I will take you home and you can live with me." He stopped crying and said, "Thanks." He gave me a big hug! Sara Hinman 5-4

HOW ALPHABET GOT HIS NAME Have you ever heard of a bear named Alphabet? Well, I suppose you haven't. This stranger is named Alphabet, because his given name had every single letter in the alphabet.* His name was Zelphanugosriklivumdabecif J. Qumwx. Isn't that a super weird name? Well, to start at the beginning is sort of hard. I will begin at the part where we met. One day I was walking in the park just down the street where I live, and I saw a little girl talking to something that I didn't see. I walked over and saw a panda bear talking to the girl!! I couldn't believe my e y e s ! The bear was really talking to the girl in English! The girl saw me and asked me if I would like to meet the bear. Weil, of course I said yes. I walked over to the bear and said, "How do you do?" He paused a minute and said, "I am fine. How do you do?" After a long talk with the bear, I asked the girl who the bear was and where did he come from. She answered, "I don't know." The panda bear didn't know where he was or where he was going. I told him he could come to live with me. He told me all about himself and where he came from. He told me his name, too. This is a big surprise for me. It is: Zelphanugosriktivymdabecif J. Qumzw! This was mind boggling! I couldn't even pronounce it! So I asked him if I could give him a new name. He said yes with a smile. I was awake all night, trying to figure out a name for him. In tne morning I told him the name I had thought of for him. It was Alphabet. The way I figured it out was by discovering that his name had all of the letters of the alphabet! We had many encounters together. We invented many things. We also Hived happily ever after. Heather Smith

I was at my home in CA. with my mom and dad. We were watching "Eight is Enough'.' When I nad to go to bed, I brushed my teeth and got in Ded. Then I heard a sound. It said, "Randy, come over to your mouse cage." I thought I was hearing t h i n g s , but I went over there and my mouse was talking to me. I thought I was c r a z y . . , . Then the mouse said, "Follow me." And I did. we went m a door and went back in time. I asked hi 15 where we were. We were in the year 12 B.C. We went to his nouse and I met his parents. Then we went back into the door and I jumped ^ into bed. The mouse hepped into his cage and we lived happily ever after.

THREE ADVENTURES WITH SEYMORE Let me start from the very beginning. It was April 3 when I bought Seymore. We took him home, and I couldn't believe it when he said, "Thank you for taking me home!" So, I took him in my room, put him on my bed, got out my two ruby necklaces, and put one on Seymore and one on me. He said, "What are these"." I said, "They're necklaces." "I know, but what are they for?" "They're magic, and they take you anywhere you want to go." "Where did you get them?" "From my grandfather who died two months ago." "Oh, I'm sorry." Well, that night after dinner I said good night to my parents. We got out of our beds and wished to be in Scotland. We landed in Scotland at Edinborough Castle. Seymore said, "Wow! Look at that bakery!" "I -enow!" A guard came out of the castle and said, "Why are ye trespassing at Edinborough Castle?" I said, "Well, you see, we were just going to iook at it." "Well, I suggest ye better leave the Castle before the King hears about t h i s !" We wished again to go to Africa. We landed near a swamp. An alligator said, "Please get me out of here! I hate this dirty water." "I think we should help him," said Seymore. So we did. Our next wish was to be in Switzerland. We landed on the Alps! Seymore said, "Let's go skiing." We went skiing for an hour. Then I said, "Well, we better go now." We wished to be home in our beds, and there we were. Seymore said, "These were the best adventures I ever had!" Babbie Stevenson

One day when I was reading, a cat came up to me and said, "Hello. My name is Teton." What are you doing here?" I said. The cat said, "I needed some help on my homework." "Cats don't have homework',' I said. "On!" he said. "Why don't we go and play?" "Yes." So we went out to play. We found a note. It said, "Go to the garage." We went to the garage and found one more note. It said, "Go to a tree in the garden. On the tree will be a note." The cat and I went to the tree. There was the note. It said, "Go into the house." So we did. Then we found one more note. This note said,"You have gotten so far. This is the last note. Go to the dining room." We went to tne dining room and there was a Dirthday party. Guess who tne party was for? ME! 3uddy Henriksen 5-6

FIVE MONTHS WITH MY COUGAR

One day when I was with ray mother I got a letter from my friend in Asia, and his name is Kowawn (Cow1 awn). I asked my mom if I could go to his nome. I left on a DC-10 to southern Asia. I got tnere on Thursday afternoon. When I got there, I called my mom to tell her I was alright and not to worry about me. The first day I had to get used to it, so Kowawn and I went exploring the deserts. It was hot I All of a sudden we fell into an ice pit and went sliding down and down until we reached the bottom. We were really afraid! We started thinking about how to get out when we heard a voice come from behind us. It was a cold shakey voice that had some purring in it. It was a cougar who had fallen in there earlier, but we couldn't believe it could talk. No other animal could talk. The cougar turned out to be friendly, because it wanted to help us and it wanted to get out itself! Every day we found different caverns and went into some of them. One day wniie we were hunting, we went into a cavern with flesh-eating bats that killed Kowawn and almost killed the cougar and me! They would have killed us but I found a weapon that was a piece of ice that was super sharp on the tip. It w o u M n ' t melt or be cold. I had used it many times to keep the cougar and me aliive. The food that we ate was some oats we found that were quite tasty. At the beginning of the fourth month we had gone more than 680 miles. We didn't know it, but we had almost gone across the continent of Asia. The cougar and I were very tired and it was cold. Every night I wouid think about my old friend Kowawn, and he seemed to be with me every single minute of the day. Every day the cougar and I became closer and closer and we were great friends. Every night we wouid sit by the fire and tell each other about our lives. One day while we were exploring, we saw light!! We went out and almost cried we were so happy! The cougar knew where iie was because he lived near here, so we went to his cave and I was adopted by his family. Every day I played with the pups. There was no way I could thank the cougar, whose name was the Golden Mane! Morgan Schilling

MY TRIP WITH RASCAL The day I met Rascal was when I ran home from school. I ran as fast as I could because I had a lot of homework. When I got home, I went to do my homework. Then I heard something. I looked over and there was a golden horse sitting on my bed. He said, "Hello. My name is Rascal." After that I took him and washed him. I dried him with my mom's hair dryer and hid him in the garage. When my mom came home, we had dinner. I hid some of it in a bag for Rascal. After dinner I took it to him. The next day I took him out and let him eat the grass. That night, after I fed hiig,, I thought I should tell my parents. They said. I could keep him, but I would have to find another place to keep him while we went to Hawaii. The next day I called the airline and asked if I could bring an animal. They said they would have to bring him on a special airplane. When we got to Hawaii, I saw Rascal tied up to a bench. I ran over and hugged him and said, "What a trip this is going to be!" CLAS S Our classroom is, well, it is not really clean, but at least it doesn't look like Oscar's room (you know, on the "Odd Couple"). Most of the walls are made of bricks which are covered up by black boards and bulletin boards. We have many different things on the bulletin boards. For example, on one we have two maps of the U.S.A. (They're two different maps, of course.) On another board we have our fish tests that we had to take before we went on a field trip on a boat called the Inland Seas. On our black board we have our schedule for the day and some in structions for taking a test. I think our class is a neat class and the kids and teachers are some of the nicest people I have ever met. Samantha Dawson The classroom that we live in most of the year contains many things. It has gray stone walls, five windows (two of them sliding doors), a divider at the end of the room which separates our great class from the fifth grade. The bulletin boards around the walls tell us about different things. I the room there are twenty-three desks that are almost always messy. There are usually a lot of papers, binders, base ball gloves, books and other things lying around until it is time to go home, then we have to clean up the room. Our class also consists of scientists, astronomers, athletes, actors, artists, singers and mechanics. Mark Gustafson Sixth Grader:

We have the best class in the whole world.

Voice: You mean the messiest class, don't you? Sixth Grader: I know, but that helps to make it the best. Voice; Yes, I guess you're right. Sixth Grader: We're the best and getting better. Voice: I have to admit, it is a nice class. Sixth Grader: Mrs. Thoresen, you can come out of the closet now. Voice: How did you know it was me? Sixth Grader: You're the only one who can admit our class is GOOD! Mark Kirchner When you go into our class room, beware! Beware of flying chalky erasers, curled up fists, rubber bands, tennis balls, water balloons, old lunches, pencils, chairs, desks .... There are so many things to wa$ch out for that I couldn't possibly name them all. But, we do have our good points. First of all everyone is nice, smart and athletic (especially a boy named Joe). Since I have only been here one year I can not judge the school, but if I had to judge our class I would rate it number 1!! I only wish that we didn't have homework because I'm always in study hall. If I had to use a word to describe our class I'd call it the Exorcist; when you get in our class you won't survive. Why do you think we have seven teachers teaching us! Joe Polhemus

Galaxy-Milky Way Star - Sun Planet - Earth Continent - North America State - California City - Menlo Park School - Phillips Brooks T1“e When^one^first enters the sixth grade classroom, a first thought might be that a localized tornado had Just struck. There are books, backpacks, sweaters and papers scattered here and there. Desks are arranged in not-too-straight rows. The insides of these desks range from messv to total chaos. Decorating the walls are bulletin boards which contain science information, announcements, math challenges , a satellite photo of the U.S. and one on prefixes and suffixes. All types of students make up this class. There are the brainy, the quiet, the athletic, and the talkers, all together an interesting group of people who sometimes make life difficult for their teachers. There are quiet times in the classroom, but after recess or after school is not one of them. At these times, the noise level is extreme ly high. It seems that recess is a favorite subject to many in this

All the teachers of these students work hard to give them the very best education. Even though they don't say so, the class really appreciates everything they do for them. - . v,nT, Future prediction for this class is for much good luck and hap piness for everyone. „ _ .. y Data Gatherer: Gerry Cargile "Just Remember Good-bye Doesn't Mean Foreverl" Looking back at my years at Trinity, I realize things weren't so bad (they were terrible 1 ...Just kidding). The teachers were always nice and helpful and Mr. Towner was an ideal principal. Our school was so great, I have a message about it to convey to you: The first thing that comes to my mind happened in third grade. Our class held a hobby show that year and I made pine cone skiers. In fourth grade we did nor out-doorsy things. We went on an overnight; Mrs. Landreth threatened to take us home. Of course we were very good after that. '"In f if the grade we had a good time too. We want to the Exploratorium and the Lawrence Hall of Science. Last, but not least, in sixth grade we went to the State Capitol and on the bay trip. But now the picnic is rapidly approaching and the most I can write out is good-bye Phillips Brooks. We'll miss you. -Kara NyserWhen I look back at all my years at Trinity Parish School and Phillips Brooks School, I think of exciting, great, and interesting times. It all started in kindergarten, which was really fun. In first grade I had Miss Root, who was a nice but strict teacher. Second grade was taught by Miss Schwarz and sometimes she'd bring Tasha, her dog, who was cute and cuddly, Mrs. Monnot was great; the Hobby Show made much money for St. Anthony's Dining Room. In fourth grade with Mrs. Landreth, we got to make a movie and go to her cabin to spend the night. Mrs. Westmoreland, who is one of my favorite teachers, liked to stive us yucky reading papers. Now I have Mrs. Thoresen who is ksipful and nice too. This school is a neat school and always will be. I will miss it. -Annie Roberts-

THE WEED The long, thin leaves waver in the wind and the rain. The thirsty roots suck up the water from the moistened ground while the weed gradually grows. LAKE TAHOE IN WINTER One of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen was when my dad took me skiing last winter. Ater we stepped off the chair lift we saw a man taking pictures. Then I saw a scene that is probably the most beautiful I will ever see. The Lake was differ ent. I was standing miles and miles away on a hill in Squaw Valley. I saw the Lake between two rugged, snow covered mountains. It was haloed by glistening, snow covered trees. Tahoe was covered with mist and steam, moving mysteriously and silently past. When you could see the water there were so many dark and light blues they were uncountable. As I skied down the hill I remembered a scene I will never forget, Lake Tahoe in Winter. -Kristine BretallPATRICK Patrick has hazel, brown eyes, a small no«e and a cute mouth. But, when he opens his mouth usually a big scream comes out. He is five years old and very curious about everything. He follows me everywhere, and he always tells me I have to get him something to eat. On the other hand, he is also very nice and shares a lot. He often says that I can share my toys with him if he wants. -Lara Crowder-

MY HORSE My horse *s name is Blue Lady and she is very nice. She is white with brown dapples all over her body. She's very big, weighing at least 900 pounds. Her feet are big too and if she steps on you it will really hurt. Her tail almost touches the ground

Memories

Her mane has white'and brownii gray hairs in it and her fore lock is also pure white. There is only one thing she dols not like, other horses. rHer favorite foods are beer fd nuts.

My memories of the past years are both good and I'll start with the good ones. Let's see, when I first - Heather arrived at T.P.S. I was so La nig scared I wanted to cry. The first people I met were Annie, Molly K. and Faith. They all welcomed me. Molly and Faith were new too and Annie and I got in more tro together. It was fun. Miss Root was my teacher and I really like her. but my favorite I went on a lot of fie^ Landreth's cabi] — was in fourth grade, going — - ---. It was a blast! We went to Drake's Beach and then to Point Tffrt. I've been with this class a long time and I could not tell about all the memories I have or it would be a too-long report. One of the best memories will be of the teachers and all the help they have given me. I will always remember this school and the special people in it. I'll miss you all more than you can imagine; you re my class and my good friends. -Carrie BenzLooking Back

KindergartenMrs. Lyman was a kind, understanding teacher. (Mrs. Polhemus is too and I hope she'll stay.) First GradeI don't remember much about this year, but I still remember Miss Root, stern, nice and downright empathetic. Those kind of teachers are the best. n _ , Second gradeI really wasn't in this grade the whole time, but I remember that Miss Schwartz was a great musio teacher. Mrs. Monnot's class was fun. At times things got hard, but most of the time it was great. Fourth Grade- Mrs. Landreth's year was also great, especially the sleep over. , J ^ , Fifth Grade- Mrs. Westmoreland was really nice and she helped me Im prove my grades. Sixth Grade- Mrs. Thoresen and Mrs. Franco super, fantastic, out standing and how---they're more than all that and the same goes for our class. Mr. Towner- He has gone through a lot to keep a great school going. The School Board deserves some praise too for helping nim.
