Sholto Ainslie COSMOS 2018 Acrylic on Board 18” X 18”

“PAINTING IS A CELEBRATION OF LIFE” SHOLTO AINSLIE is a New York City-based artist living in Alphabet city on the Lower East Side.He was born into an artistic family in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1963 . It wasthe height of the Apartheid era and his father was running the ÿrst multi-racial artschool in South Africa. The government strictly enforced a policy of segregationand mixed race schools were illegal. It was in this environment that he found hisartistic voice. He moved to the United States in 1983 where he has been living and working asa liaison between artists in Northern America and Southern Africa, dedicated tocultivating exchanges between these countries. “My inspiration comes from a uniÿcation of many stimuli. The sonic colors of certain musical forms, ranging from the rhythms and harmonies of jazz to multi-tracking and sampling, have been as much a creative in°uence as my fascinationwith topographical features of the earth, particularly in arid areas such as theNamib desert. My work

owes much to the indigenous architectural styles and geography of mynative land. My paintings are activated by organic ÿelds of color and a variety oftextures. The emphasis of my painting is on plasticity and expression rather thanon the narrative. My aim is to reach the energies that animate our psychic life – to penetrate the spiritual being.I commence my painting with a process of laying. Surfaces are not just painted, they evolve. Paint is allowed to °ow forming skins and crevices. One is seldom aware of brush strokes. Stains, dribbles, splashes and thick running paint createsurfaces which advance and recede similar to that of geological forms. In someof my paintings the texture of the paint remains palpable. It is left untouched orelse it is absorbed into numerous veils and waterfalls of color. It is the color thatdictates the mood of the painting whether it be pale and luminous, bright and joyous or dark and threatening. In short my paintings should be approached with an open mind, free of preconceptions.”

2011 Narrative Biography

Statement

Garry Nichols was born in Tasmania, Australia. He studied at the National Art School, in Sydney and at the New York Studio School.

My paintings have evolved into landscapes of symbols collected from direct observations of nature, and from specific memories of my childhood in Tasmania. Weaving through this landscape, are images derived from convict carvings on the Ross Bridge in Tasmania. The paintings, structured with pathways like children’s mazes lead the viewer to be lost in my landscape, populated with plant forms, ships, symbols and the ancient heads and shapes. Following the pathways creates a displacement in time and place.

Since 1986 exhibitions in New York include Monique Knowlton Gallery, White Columns, the Drawing Center, Artists Space, Pierogi Gallery and Sideshow Gallery. His work is included in collections in New York, Japan and Australia. Selected awards include Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, Grant for Painting, Gottlieb Foundation Grant, New York Foundation for the Arts, Fellowship in Painting and Marten Bequest Travelling Art Prize from Australia.

Carolina Enriquez Swan has been doing art since her days in Seattle. Swan has been featured in a variety of group art shows at places such as True Love Art Gallery and Vermillion Art Gallery. She also partook in the art market scene in Seattle with Latin inspired cupcakes, kitschy paintings and hand sewn felt brooches. She is inspired by the cult classic films, her Mexican culture and punk roots. Her art is a feminine, kitsch vibe with an edge. In her four years at Phillips, this will be her 4th year in the staff art show. In the last couple years her paintings have been focused in cult culture and her Latin roots. This year was still in the cult culture but centered on female figures. Agnès Varda (1951-2019) is immortalized as the cat lover and inspirational woman she always has been. The other piece is of a strong and inspirational local punk icon Anya! Anya’s eclectic punk patterns and flare lend themselves to gouache. You can see her bartending at local watering holes or slapping the bass in bands like Subversive Rite.

Jeff Velazquez i) Wasting Away 2019, ii) EVAsArt i) Found book cover, found frame, unused sale signage ii) Three drawings, two paintings and one collage i) 37” x 77” ii) 77” x 37”

First life began in the oceans. Lighting and churning seas gave birth to marine life. Huge animals evolved to dominate a violent and ever changing planet. As plates shifted, large quantities of plants and animals were lost in the undertow. Time and pressure gave birth to oil! Eons after all that excitement, along came a clever mammal that stood on two feet. Early on, we used oil sparingly. Then the machine age was born and with it, the need for power. Nothing compared to billions of years of stored energy. We’ve burned through a trillion gallons like drunken sailors, squandering a one time endowment like nobody’s business. In our age of ‘Black Magic’ pretty much everything is now hydrocarbon derivative. The food we eat, our plastics-unending and of course fine art sale signage. Unused but not unloved, I present the signage not taken. Destined for a landfill far from here, to be carried away by the magic of stored energy, but shortly before that, a moment in the sun. A moment to shine a light upon the one true end product of modern industrial society – entropy. Ours is the wastebased economy, staggering along, drunk on overnight shipping, far flung vacations and debt upon debt... Wasting Away 2019.

Every year I say to myself, this is my last Staff Show and each year I’m back with more art than the year before. I guess this year was special. EVAsART is a group of works inspired by the brightest light in my life, my baby daughter Eva. The materials were collected from random scraps and a fancy crate cover found in my trash covered streets. I don’t know why but I am an avid recycler. In the end, it’s all trash and shifting through it all does get me upset about my baby’s future. Repurposing is my voice in the wilderness, make a way for a new thought, a new way to live and not waste. Pretty high ideals for my lowly art... This group of works includes Flubby the Drawing, Winston Mix, Flubby the Painting, a few drawings done with Eva in my arms and Mr. Butters 10,000 Years in the Making. It’s ART to bring her joy, it’s ART to make her smile. It is EVAsART.
