With the words “A return game is desired,” a 135-year-old rivalry began

O

n November 2, 1878, Phillips Academy welcomed 80 students from a high school in New Hampshire who had traveled south by train to watch a football game. Before this first gridiron meeting, most of Andover had heard much about its brother school but had never met any of its students. In that original contest, the Big Blue defeated its new athletic rival, Phillips Exeter Academy, 22–0.

“A return game is desired,” wrote an Exonian reporter in an article published in the Phillipian that week. Whether students from either of the schools had a sense of the game’s significance, no one can say. But with that eagerness for a rematch the oldest athletic rivalry in high school history began.

This fall marks the 135th year the Blue and Red football teams have engaged in an intense but respectful rivalry. Neither of the World Wars, the Great Depression, nor any other national crisis has been enough to interrupt this storied rivalry.

Andover and Exeter teams have undergone many changes over the years and not only in the evolution of uniform, helmet, pad, and ball. Their rivalry has extended beyond just football to sports that have females participating in most every one. Fans travel by plane, bus, and car rather than a 12:37 p.m. train, tailgate picnics enliven sociability, and Andover’s cheers have evolved from “Hullabaloo, hooray, hooray” in 1896 and 1897 to today’s “Clap your hands! Stomp your feet! Andover Blue! Can’t be beat!”

Despite the changes to the details of the day, the traditional passion for the yearly contests has gone unchanged.

Swarms of students, alumni, faculty, townspeople, and parents flock to campus to watch the events of the day unfold.

An 1890 poem by Albert Davis,

Andover Class of 1893, defines Andover-Exeter athletic contests as they are still celebrated today: “Oh day of all the days we know!/ Around at last in brightest glow,/ This day November eight./ With friend, whose Alma Mater dear/ Come back to laud, and raise a cheer/ For Phillips bold and great.”

From the moment they leave their dorms until the final siren rings at Phelps Stadium, Phillipians will follow Davis’s century-old sentiment. Two bright, solid stripes, one blue and the other red, divide each green field evenly in two. Screaming cheers and chants far beyond the limits of their voices, Blue Key heads will shape the roar on the sidelines, echoed by Exonians across the turf.

Last year, Andover girls volleyball dropped its first set to Exeter before regaining momentum and cruising to a 3­–1 win, defeating its rival again four days later on the way to its second con-

secutive NEPSAC championship. Andover girls soccer dominated in a 3–0 shutout, but Andover boys soccer suffered a 3–1 loss. Andover field hockey narrowly missed a win and wound up in 1–1 tie.

Exeter got the final word at the end of the day for the fourth straight year, beating Andover on the gridiron 39–6.

This year, more than 100 Andover athletes will step onto the courts, fields, and trails, and into the pool and fight to capture the day. History has shown that it can belong to anyone.

ANDOVER

A

t the end of each summer I feel excitement because I know that I have something great to look forward to. I know that I’ll be back at school starting classes and managing copious amounts of stress. But it also means crosscountry season.

Running with a team pushes the experience to a whole new level; it makes you feel like part of something bigger. And when totally exhausted you reach the top of some hill, sometimes you want to just stop, but then you see those around you with the same look of pain and desperation on their faces, and you realize why you run.

With only one home meet this season, working together, we plan to make a statement all across New England, especially during Andover-Exeter weekend, when we’ll be competing at Interschols.

The previous season was one of development and growth. This season, we came back with strong legs, strong lungs, and strong desires. Under the watchful eye of head coach Jeffrey Domina, our renegade squad of runners hopes to—together— experience the wonderful anguish that only a 5K race can offer. And, we hope to experience it while running really fast.

Y

ou might see us running. We are a pack of boys, tall and short, with long strides and short strides and everything in between. You might see us in a single-file line alongside speeding cars on Drinkwater Road, or in a group on the rocky, treacherous trails of Fort Rock, or on the grassy hills and deep valleys of Scamman’s Farm.

But to join the pack, to be a runner, is different. Running predates language.

To run is to be human and to feel the agony and joy associated with that state of being. When we run in packs, we can imagine ourselves chasing down gazelles on the plains of Africa. The sun sets the horizon on fire, and we scrunch our foreheads, squinting to see and to keep the salty sting of sweat from our eyes. We pant and lightly thump the ground with our strides. We run for hours until the exhausted beast slumps over, foaming at the mouth.

We have been ruthless in our hunt for weak Andover runners. With an undefeated record this season and last, we hope to prey on many more in our quest to defend our title as Interschols champions.

EA girls cross-country has had a great season so far. We have raced at both the Choate and Northfield Mount Hermon Invitationals. In our dual meets, we defeated Berwick Academy and NMH and came in a close second to St. Paul’s. Our greatest strengths are our sense of team camaraderie and love of the sport. A solid base of new runners has proven themselves to be fierce competitors. One person cannot win a meet for us, no matter how fast she runs; we depend upon consistently strong scores from all the girls. To build our stamina, we have a rigorous practice schedule, including track workouts, hill repeats, tempo, and long runs.

Cross-country depends not only on physical strength but also on strength of the mind. It takes an incredible amount of focus to make it through a hard workout or to come out on top in a race. We have two great coaches who tailor workouts to meet individual needs and to help us reach our full potential in races.

We aspire to keep winning races by trying our hardest and becoming better pack runners.

he water polo team at Phillips Academy differentiates itself from many other water polo programs in the league: It is made up not only of boys on the swim team trying to get extra training in their off-season, but boys who are dedicated to the sport of water polo. Every day, both groups come together with the same intent of pushing themselves mentally and physically.

In an almost all-shallow pool with barely enough room to practice fullscale water polo formations used in other schools’ larger pools, the team has to exercise an increased ability to focus in order to stay off the bottom and to squeeze every bit out of the small space.

This season, the team gained an invaluable gift of two veteran coaches with an incredibly formidable amount of experience between them. Coach Dan O’Shea, having played very competitive water polo at Connecticut College, came to Andover a year ago and proceeded to lead the girls’ team to a New England title. Coach Cory Olcott, who played water polo at Northwestern Uni-

versity, helped coach the Stanford University women’s varsity program, one of the most competitive women’s teams in the nation, and also started several high school programs in the Bay area. With the addition of these two coaches, along with one of the most knowledgeable and experienced coaches in the league, David Fox, the team looks forward to improving over the coming years. This season we sought to kick start our status among the other teams in the league by organizing post-practice workouts in the diving well, which has greatly contributed to both the closeness of the team as well as leaving more time during practice to focus on skills under the expert tutelage of our coaches. With depth and a diverse assortment of talents and abilities, the team is hopeful and determined to finish the season well.

his year, Exeter water polo brings to the pool a committed group of athletes: seniors Finn Meeks, Andrew Seo, Chris Mukasa, Erik Saberski; uppers JB Baker, Nick duPont, Angus Gorman, Cal Oakley, Joe Shepley; lower Brooks Saltonstall; and preps Will Belmont and David Shepley. Led by senior cocaptains Max Drach, John Moon, and Kurt Pianka, Big Red is a powerful force in the tank. The team has gotten to where it is now by a balance of aggressive offense and attentive defense. Many young athletes have stepped up this year to help Big Red Polo become a threat.

Ably coached by Don Mills, the squad eagerly looks on to the rest of the season with enthusiasm and confidence.

W

ith lots of experienced athletes returning and eager new additions, the Andover girls varsity soccer team faces every game with energy and determination. It has met each opponent with 100 percent effort and grown closer to each other as a result. Captains Piper Curtis ’13 and Emily Hoyt ’13 lead the team along with head coach Lisa Joel and assistant coaches Willa Abel and Kiley Horne. They have managed to lead this team in overcoming injuries and setbacks by keeping the energy positive and productive.

Some notable players who have returned to the team this year are strikers Hannah Guzzi ’14 and Alex Thomas ’15, midfielders Nekele McCall ’14 and Katherine Kreider ’14, and defenders Anjali Krishnamachar ’13 and Diana Tchadi ’14. Newcomers Jessica Vocaturo ’13 and Giovanna Pickering ’13 have been invaluable additions to the offense and defense of the Andover team. Their innovative ideas and perseverance carry the team on the field.

Team chemistry has always been one of the mainstays of the girls’ soccer program at Andover. As Vocaturo 8

espite losing a few players to injuries, we have a strong team full of vigorous young blood as well as passionate veterans. With an unprecedented number of new players this season, a new energy has been brought to the team. We are strong at every position, and we are a team on and off the field. hillips Academy field hockey, also known as PAFH, is a unique and special team, and I have been fortunate enough to be a part of it for the past three very successful seasons. PAFH is an exceptional paradigm of success and passion, embodying determination, unity, and camaraderie. Our team motto is “Don’t Settle,” and, as a senior and the captain, I am confident that with that mentality we will succeed.

We have made it to the playoffs the past three years and definitely hope to keep that tradition alive. So far this sea-

son we have a win, three losses and a tie.

I believe it is not how we begin as a team that defines us, but rather how we adapt to challenges, improve together and finish the season. Unlike the last few years, we have mainly a young team, but with that youth comes new perspective and potential, and luckily for us, some extraordinary talent.

The Andover–Exeter competitions in the fall are by far the most zealous and anticipated. In 2009 we won 3–0, in 2010 we won 2–1 in overtime, and in 2011 we suffered a bitter 1–1 tie in overtime. This year we definitely are not willing to “settle” and hope that through hard work and a positive attitude we will emerge victorious. Each player on PAFH has an equally significant role in our success as a team, and the only way for a team to thrive is if each individual is committed to move toward a common goal. We approach the rest of our season and the game against Exeter with high hopes and the will to win.

EXETER

E

xeter’s 2012 field hockey team has had an incredibly successful season. After last year’s rebuilding experience, the wins this year’s team has captured have been extremely rewarding and gave us tons of confidence as the season progressed. Although we meshed well on the field at the beginning of the season—which was great, considering a lot of our players are new to the team—we became more tightly knit both on and off the field as our season went on, with the help of coaches Baldwin, Tomlinson, and Robinson.

The closeness that Moxie developed this year is a huge part of what has made us so strong. We also have tons of fun during practice, which, rather than reducing focus during games, actually increases our intensity; as a team, we’ve definitely agreed that having fun and enjoying the sport are just as important as having good focus and intensity. We also have multisport athletes on the team, bringing fresh perspective and balance to drills and workouts.

is easily visible during our games: our passing has steadily improved, and we have a great sense of where each of us is positioned during play. The natural intensity that every player carries with her is evident in the season’s high-scoring record and overtime play. The whole team is pumped for our Andover game, and we’ll be sure to bring Moxie’s customary intensity and fun to the season’s last match.

ANDOVER

A

ndover, New England’s two-time defending prep school volleyball champion, has high expectations for the fall and looks to defeat rival Exeter at the annual games in November.

Head coach Clyfe Beckwith and assistant coach Tasha Hawthorne, both with strong backgrounds in volleyball, are training the team for success this season. Notably, Beckwith has dedicated a decade and a half to heading the Andover volleyball program.

This year, Andover fields a team of 14 players from all around the country.

The seniors are backed by a talented set of underclassmen. Veterans Kate Wincek ’14, Many Reichenbach ’14, and Alex Becker ’15 bring a crucial element of experience, and newcomers Becca Federman ’14, Veronica Hildenbrand ’14, Isabel Taylor ’15, Annette Bell ’16, and Erica Shin ’16 add depth and talent.

One of Andover’s strengths this year has been serving and hitting. With tough serves, the team has been able to keep its opponents out of system and prevent them from scoring. Running 6–2 this season, Andover setters Bren and Annette Bell have successfully spread the team’s offense to make it easier for hitters to score.

Despite its strengths, Andover continues to work on its serve-receive passing and keeping focused throughout the entirety of the match. The team frequently experiences second-game slumps and strings of weak passing that make it difficult to score; however, the players have improved and will continue to do so.

fter losing six seniors on our squad who graduated, we came into this season prepared to rebuild. With 12 new varsity players and five returning athletes, we have worked hard to improve over the season. Underclassmen Michelle Bosche ’16 and Taylor Jean-Jacques ’16 have brought firepower to the front row. Peace Kabari ’16 has the ability to jump out of the gym and has provided some of the most exciting moments of our season.

And Jess Hebl ’16 has brought unparalleled energy both on and off the court.

Despite several injuries, we have battled back and steadily improved over the course of the season. Special thanks go to coaches Bruce Shang, Joanna Ro, and Scott Saltman, who come every day and work with us. We look forward to an exciting match against Andover.

ith stinging defense and explosive attack, the boys varsity soccer team boasts an impressive 5–0–2 record heading into the second half of the season, already producing some highlight wins over St. Paul’s, Brooks, and Loomis Chaffee.

With a mix of newcomers as well as returning veterans, Andover’s back line has been very strong, allowing only two goals over the first seven games.

Starting goalkeeper Jack Katkavich ’13 is pivotal in the success of the defense, making key saves. Protecting Katkavich are Andover’s defenders, Sam Block ’14, Gabe Freund ’13, Conor Soules ’13, and cocaptain Jack McGeachie ’13. On the outsides, Block and Soules have been key in one v. one defending, while Freund and McGeachie have formed an effective pair in the center of the park.

Tyler Olkowski ’13, Peter Bensen ’14, and Conor Cameron ’15 are vital to the strength of the back line.

Led by the talented Dylan Mott ’15, Andover’s strikers have torn opponents apart with their pace, strength, and skill.

Paired with James McLeod ’13 up front, they have formed a great partnership, wreaking havoc on opposing defenses.

With his hard work and creativity, Kene Adigwe ’14 completes a potent Andover frontline.

Coaches Bill Scott and Clark Winchell have been fantastic, while managers Colby Fagan ’14 and Claire Frankel ’14 have been great additions.

With the combination of youth and experience, the team looks to finish the season strong and earn its fifth straight NEPSAC tournament berth.

ig Red varsity soccer is having another good season, with notable wins over Loomis Chaffee and Northfield Mount Hermon. The stifling defense of John Cross, Kyle Robinson, Spencer Reaves, and Matt Ryan has limited opponents to very few shots per game, and goaltenders Curtis Arsenault and Will Barnett have been equally phenomenal between the pipes. Robinson and Cross have been especially important in delivering crucial messages to the team the night before games. Sterling Weatherbie has been a great addition to the defensive midfield, adding endless energy to the team. Michael McNamara has showcased his toughness and tireless work ethic all season. Together with Nick Weigel and Michael Girard, they make up a formidable attack team with great chemistry. Seniors Daniel Ochoa, Zach Barnett, Hoony Lee, and Ethan Payne have provided outstanding leadership and enthusiasm. Coach Cosgrove’s strategic mind, complemented by coach Hutchins’ improved left foot, have the team in good hands. Coach Mike Wilson has helped out when not busy with his newborn daughter. With

ith a rough season last year, full of injuries and disappointment, we are ready to bounce back to victory this season. The team has spent much time in the off-season training and preparing for the fall. We have a strong core of returning athletes and a very talented crop of new players.

Quarterback Joey Verhaegh ’13 runs a powerful and explosive offense. Snapping the ball and anchoring the offensive line is center Justin Aimonetti ’13. To his left on the line is tackle John Cifrino ’14 and Jack Ward ’13 at guard. On the right side is guard Connor Farrell ’13 and tackle Aaron Oberst ’13. his 2012 team is the strongest, most physical, and most promising of all the teams in my three years at Exeter. The team has taken major strides from our first scrimmage against Buckingham, Brown & Nichols, and each week we get exponentially better. Our chemistry grows with each practice. As is the case with the best teams, our defense is what puts us in position to win. We have a great front four, backed by our strong linebacker core and our three deep, which allow us to force the majority of our opponent’s offenses three and out. On the other side of the

Football ball, our offense is the most potent in the program’s last few years, with the ability to put points on the board, both through the air and on the ground. Our dominance on both sides of the ball is due to the great play by our linemen, who take control up front enabling our speed players to make plays.

It’s a big year of big challenges and opportunities, but I think that if we play our game and continue to get better, we have a great chance at going undefeated—and knocking off Andover for the fifth consecutive year.
