Champs Guadeloupe, Bahamas advance in ‘Worlds’ GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, November 13: Favourites Guadeloupe and Bahamas won twice in straight sets here at Clifton Hunter High School today to advance from Group C to the second round of the CAZOVA qualifying series for the 2018 FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship. And since Guadeloupe, the sixthranked team in CAZOVA, had defeated No. 7 Bahamas in the first match of the roundrobin tournament yesterday, they captured the gold medal. Guadeloupe whipped Bonaire 2515, 2514, 2510 in the first match of the day in just over an hour and came back in the fourth and final tonight to deny hosts Cayman Islands 2514, 257, 2516 in 55 minutes. After their setback against Guadeloupe, Bahamas needed to win both matches today to secure the other promotion place from the group and they did so without much bother. They dealt with Cayman Islands 2510, 2514, 2515 in 55 minutes in the morning and then cruised past Bonarie 2516, 2510, 2511 in the first match of the evening session. This was a doordie affair for both teams as their 11thranked opponents had beaten Cayman Islands yesterday and also needed to win to qualify. Instead Bonaire ended up with the bronze medal, while the 12thranked hosts failed to win a set in the tournament and brought up the rear. The individual awards were presented during the closing ceremony and Leslie Turiaf of Guadeloupe picked up four prizes, including Most Valuable Player. Including defending champions United States, seven countries from the NORCECA region will compete in the next World Championships in Japan.
