Final Bulletin

To All Delegations

On behalf of the members of the Control Committee, I want to firstly congratulate Barbados for winning the 9th Caribbean Junior Men Volleyball Championship. We also congratulate Curacao for placing second and Bahamas for placing third. As was mentioned in the opening message, we would further like to thank all the teams, inclusive of their technical and administrative staff present here or in your respective countries. Despite where you finished in this competition, do not lose sight of the sacrifices you and others made to make this opportunity to display and advance your skills possible. We also hope that you would have used the opportunity to make new friends. Cherish these friendships. No matter how good a player we are, one day we will stop playing but good friendships never lose their value. The current and future strength of our Zone is dependent on how well we relate to each other across different national borders. Let us chart a course for a bright future. Finally, we wish to congratulate and thank the Guadeloupe Volleyball Federation for successfully hosting this Championship. We are fully aware of the challenges you had to overcome to make the event a success and we appreciate your continued efforts toward this end. Your volunteers deserve special acknowledgement. They were always very helpful, courteous and, very importantly, competent. You have some good people supporting you; manage them well. We remain aware that some of you will have flight challenges to leave Guadeloupe but we hope that those will not be prolonged and wish for you a very safe journey back to your respective homes. . Regards Major Warrenton Dixon President Control Committee

Bahamas downs T&T for Junior bronze Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, July 28, 2013: Team captain Rajahl Moxed led three players in double-figures as Bahamas avenged a round-robin loss to T&T to secure the bronze medal at the Ninth Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Junior Men’s Championship with a (3-0) 26-24, 25-23, 25-19 at the Paul Chonchon Sports and Cultural Centre. Moxey finished with 16 points, 11 of which were kills and also added three blocks and two service aces while Antonio Jennings tallied 13, made up of 12 kills, and Kenton Dawkins, ten, in the 87 minutes victory to secure their first medal since a silver in 2003 in neighbouring Martinique. For T&T, bronze medal winners in 2009 and 2011, Nicholas Prescott had a match-high 19 points, 15 on kills, three services aces and one block while Maalik Springle had 15, nine on kills and five blocks, and captain Newton Grant, nine. Despite the straight sets result, it was a very evenly contested match between both teams with T&T holding the edge on spikes, 38-30 and service aces, 6-5 while Bahamas, dominated on blocks, 14-8 and also made full use of T&T’s 27 errors while it limited its own to 14, the least in one match in the tournament thus far. The win for Bahamas which was winless in its round-robin group, avenged a 22-25, 23-25, 23-25 loss to T&T in Pool B round-robin play. Commenting after the match, a disappointed Grant said his team played in patches and did not operated together as a team which Bahamas took advantage of.

“We missed out on playing for the gold medal after the loss to Barbados and was very determined to leave with the bronze, but we made too many errors, “ ended Grant. Moxey admitted the match was a very competitive one which his team was eager to win as it meant a lot to their programme back home. He added, “After losing in the semifinals we were very disappointed and we went back and did our homework, went over the pros and cons of our previous matches and came with a plan which worked”. David Camacho, coach of the T&T team said his team lacked the kind of energy level to compete against a good Bahamas team which played at a consistent level throughout the match. Bahamas coach Devince Smith was expectedly happy for his team’s victory and reiterated how much it would mean to its youth development programme back home in terms of corporate sponsorship. With respect to the match, Smith said it was a very competitive one as his players were determined to get back at T&T for its first match lost on Wednesday, also in three sets.

Goodridge guides Barbados past Curacao to title Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, July 28, 2013: Jabarry Goodridge was almost unstoppable as Barbados outlasted Curacao (3-2) 25-14, 25-27, 25-10, 23-25, 15-7 to be crowned champions at the Ninth Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Junior Men’s Championship at the Paul Chonchon Sports and Cultural Centre. Goodridge saved his best performance for last as he tallied a tournament high 34 points inclusive of 30 kills while captain Ammuniki Wood got nine, Andriy Stapleton and Carlos Cyrus, seven apiece and Kimar Hinds and Chioke Holder six each for the Barbadians in the one hour and 53 minute grueling contest with the 2011 title-holders. For Curacao, which was hoping to avenge a day one loss to Barbados, also in five sets to repeat as champions, Gilbert Vivo top-scored with 23 points, 19 coming off of kills while captain Sharif Gabriel, playing on a badly injured ankle added 17, Derrick Alexander, ten and Jamiro Holder, seven, in the loss. Just as in their first meeting, the match was a see-saw contest with both teams pulling out all the stops in an effort to be crowned champions and secure the lone ticket to the NORCECA Continental Championship. In the end it the Barbadians who had the edge on spikes, 49-45, blocks 15-14 and aces, 5-4 who had the better of the nerves and executed when they needed too, to claim their third title in the tournament’s history. On the other hand it was another tough loss for Curacao, which was guilty of committing too many errors, 44 to the Barbadians,20 on the night, which played a key part it its title being snatched from its grasp.

When both teams met in the opening match of the tournament on Tuesday, the Barbadians, also champions on home soil in 1997 and then 2005 in Aruba, also won in five sets, 25-19, 16-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-10. Speaking after the see-saw battle which was well appreciated by the crowd, a distraught Gabriel s was lost for words, only saying, “My team did not play with enough heart . We did not focus enough in key moments in the match and it cost us our crown”. Wood credited his team-mates with showing a lot of fighting spirit and heart when the match got closer. “It was all about who wanted it badly and even though it was a bit of up and down contest, the guys were able to stay focus when it came down to the wire and took us home. Urvin Leito, coach of the Curacao first credited Barbados for a match well played but said his team’s failure was down to a lack of experience on the path of the libero and setter. “They are two of the younger players on the team and it seemed as though the atmosphere of playing in the final got to them emotionally and they were not able to play their best today.” Barbadian coach John Stuart, who was an assistant coach when his team won the inaugural on home soil in 1997 first praised Gabriel for showing great leadership in playing on an injured ankle. “I know a lot of older players would not have done what he did for his team , but our guys also played with great determination. He added, “Just as in our first meeting with Curacao, this one was a tough battle and could have gone either way, but I am glad we won. Stuart noted that a key to his team’s victory in the competition was his five players who returned from the last team that played in Jamaica in 2011 and placed fourth. “Nothing beats experience and to have five players who played before in this team was a big plus to us,” ended Stuart.
