Welcome from the Gala Chair Dear Friends, On behalf of the Gala Committee, I want to welcome you to Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale’s 2019 Winter Gala. I am deeply grateful for your support this evening as we honor mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and composer Caroline Shaw for their extraordinary artistic achievements. I hope you enjoy the festivities tonight, including the music you will hear from Ms. von Otter, Ms. Shaw, countertenor Daniel Moody, the California Youth Symphony, and members of the Orchestra, all led by Music Director Nicholas McGegan. PBO is a special organization known for its breadth of programming and its national and international reach. The Gala is our most important event of the year, raising essential funds to further the Orchestra’s artistic and educational vision. We are proud to work with today’s most important artists and educators, including our collaboration with The Juilliard School’s Historical Performance program. CALIFORNIA YOUTH SYMPHONY
Founded in 1952 and described by the San Mateo County Times as “one of the finest of the world’s youth symphonies”, CYS has established an international reputation for the quality of its programs. In 1963 CYS became the first American youth orchestra ever to tour overseas in Japan. In addition to robust touring, CYS’s main focus remains in the Bay Area. With enrollment exceeding 500 students, CYS has consistently expanded its programs over the last twenty years in order to meet the growing need for youth music programs. They offer seven programs in Palo Alto and Los Altos for musical instruction and performance opportunities on all symphonic instruments for young musicians of all levels. 4
Gala Honorees GALA HONOREE ANNE SOFIE von OTTER
Internationally acclaimed Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter has long been considered one of the finest singers of her generation. She has collaborated with Caroline Shaw on numerous occasions. Notably, Ms. von Otter premiered Ms. Shaw’s first work in her three-part song cycle commissioned by PBO in 2016 at the Disney Concert Hall. She will premiere the finale of Shaw’s song cycle at Lincoln Center in March 2019. Her remarkable discography displays her eclectic breadth of repertoire including her 2016 released with string quartet Brooklyn Rider featuring music by Shaw, Kate Bush, Bjork, and more. Hew newest album released in 2018 includes diverse works from Liszt, Copland, Strauss, and Bernstein. Ms. von Otter last appeared with Philharmonia on a multi-city international tour in 2016.
GALA HONOREE CAROLINE SHAW
Caroline Shaw is a New York-based musician - vocalist, violinist, composer, and producer. She was the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music for Partita for 8 Voices, written for the Grammy-winning Roomful of Teeth, of which she is a member. Recent commissions include new works for Renée Fleming with Inon Barnatan and the New York City Ballet with Justin Peck. The 2018/19 season sees premieres with the Seattle Symphony, the LA Philharmonic, and Juilliard415. Caroline studied at Rice, Yale, and Princeton, teaches at NYU, and is a Creative Associate at The Juilliard School. Ms. Shaw has written three works for Philharmonia with a fourth major commission on the way.
GUEST ARTIST DANIEL MOODY
Countertenor Daniel Moody has garnered widespread acclaim for his commanding yet expressive vocal timbre and his breathtaking musicianship. Recent highlights include the American premiere of George Benjamin’s “Dream of the Song” at the Festival of Contemporary Music at Tanglewood Festival; engagements with Handel’s Hercules with Staunton Festival, Great Music in a Great Space series and Boston Symphony. Mr. Moody has performed with acclaimed groups Les Violons du Roy, Apollo’s Fire, and The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra. Mr. Moody made his Carnegie Hall debut in December 2018. He makes his debut with PBO this March. In 2016, Mr. Moody graduated from Yale’s Institute of Sacred Music.

PBO’s Music Director & Chorale Director Nicholas McGegan, OBE Waverley Fund Music Director As he embarks on his fifth decade on the podium, Nicholas McGegan — long hailed as “one of the finest baroque conductors of his generation” (The Independent) and “an expert in 18th-century style” (The New Yorker) — is recognized for his probing and revelatory explorations of music of all periods. The 2018/19 season marked his 33rd year as music director of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale, and he is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Pasadena Symphony. His 2018/19 appearances include St. Louis Symphony as well as engagements with Baltimore, Detroit, Calgary, National and Pasadena Symphonies. McGegan also returns to the New Zealand Symphony, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and appears with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. Summer Festivals include Aspen, Music Academy of the West, and MDR Musiksommer in Germany. Highlights of PBO’s season under McGegan include the completion of a PBO-commissioned song cycle by Caroline Shaw featuring mezzosoprano Anne Sofie von Otter. The same program will appear at New York’s Lincoln Center followed by a tour of Handel’s Saul at Disney Hall. McGegan’s prolific discography features nine releases on Philharmonia Baroque’s label, Philharmonia Baroque Productions, including the 2011 GRAMMY® Award nominated recording of Haydn Symphonies nos. 88, 101, and 104. Born in England, Nicholas McGegan was educated at Cambridge and Oxford. He was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen “for services to music overseas.” Bruce Lamott Chorale Director & Scholar-in-Residence Bruce Lamott has been Director of the Philharmonia Chorale since 1997 and also serves as Philharmonia’s Scholar-in-Residence. He first performed with the Orchestra in 1989 as continuo harpsichordist for Handel’s Giustino. In his 30-year tenure with the Carmel Bach Festival, he served as a harpsichordist, lecturer, choral director, and conductor of the Mission Candlelight Concerts. Lamott received an M.A. and Ph.D. in musicology from Stanford. His teaching career began at UC Davis, where he directed the Early Music Ensemble. He directed the choir and orchestra and taught western civilization at San Francisco University High School for 36 years. As a professor of music history at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music since 2001, Dr. Lamott specializes in the vocal and instrumental repertoire of the 18th century. He teaches continuo-playing for the coach-accompanists in the San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program and lectures for the Opera and Opera Guild’s education programs.

About Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale Under the musical direction of Nicholas McGegan for the past 33 years, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale (PBO) is recognized as America’s leading historically informed ensemble. Using authentic instruments and stylistic conventions of the Baroque to early-Romantic periods, the orchestra engages audiences through its signature Bay Area series, national tours, recordings, commissions, and education projects of the highest standard. Founded in the San Francisco Bay Area 38 years ago, the ensemble is the largest of its kind in the United States and is known for its versatility in programming and joyful performances. PBO’s musicians are among the best in the country and serve on the faculties of The Juilliard School, Harvard, and Stanford. The Orchestra performs an annual subscription season throughout the Bay Area as well as a popular alternative concert series — PBO SESSIONS — which has regularly sold out since its inception in 2014. In April 2017, PBO performed the modern-day premiere of Rameau’s Le Temple de la Gloire. The fully-staged opera included an international cast of singers and dancers and celebrated sold-out audiences and critical acclaim from around the world. Each season welcomes eminent guest artists such as mezzo-sopranos Susan Graham and Anne Sofie von Otter, countertenor Andreas Scholl, violoncellist Steven Isserlis, and maestros Jordi Savall and Richard Egarr. The Orchestra enjoys numerous collaborations, including an ongoing collaboration with the Mark Morris Dance Group and tours regularly to Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Disney Concert Hall. In July 2017, PBO co-produced the critically-acclaimed modern adaptation of Aci, Galatea e Polifemo with Anthony Roth Costanzo and National Sawdust in Brooklyn. Among the most recorded orchestras in the world, PBO boasts a discography of more than 40 recordings and launched its own label in 2011, on which it has released ten recordings. PBO also maintains two major initiatives — Jews & Music and New Music for Old Instruments, and regularly commissions new works, including two recent commissions by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw: the first for mezzo-soprano Anne-Sofie von Otter enjoyed its world premiere at Disney Hall in 2016 followed by the second in the song cycle for soprano Dominique Labelle in 2017. A third piece will be premiered at Lincoln Center in March 2019. PBO commissioned “To Hell and Back” by Guggenheim Fellow Jake Heggie. Future seasons bring new commissions by Caroline Shaw, Matthew Aucoin, and Mason Bates. To nurture the next generation of historically informed performance, Philharmonia and The Juilliard School’s Historical Performance launched a permanent collaboration in 2016. PBO was founded by harpsichordist and early music pioneer Laurette Goldberg. Nicholas McGegan will become Music Director Laureate effective with the 2020/21 season. A written bid constitutes a binding commitment by the bidder to pay • The highest valid bid at closing time constitutes the winning bid. Our Mission
Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale’s mission is to present audiences throughout the world with historically-informed performances of music from the Baroque, Classical, and Early Romantic periods, as well as new music, using period instruments and vocal techniques that capture the style, spirit, and distinctive sound of that time. We share our music through live performances and recordings, and actively reach new audiences through our educational offerings and training programs for the next generation of musicians.
