Whether you are a native of Nodaway County, a newcomer to our county-seat community, or a prospective resident or business operator, you get a comfortable feeling as soon as you arrive in Maryville. More specifically, there is a welcoming atmosphere which demonstrates that Maryville’s residents are interested in their long-time neighbors, visitors to the community, and those who might decide that this could well be the best place in the Midwest to live, work and raise a family. It is certainly one of the best, for sure. Our Northwest Missouri State University has been recognized nationally for its innovative, first-in-the-nation “Electronic Campus,” its strong educational reputation and its highly competitive intercollegiate athletic programs. The fertile valleys surrounding the city continue to support our historically rich agricultural economy. A vibrant and growing industrial community completes the making of Maryville into the fiscal focal point of northwestern Missouri, southwestern Iowa and southeastern Nebraska. To those attractive attributes, add a diversified array of city parks and recreational facilities, featuring the 3,000-acre Mozingo Lake Recreation Area with its extraordinary fresh-water fishery, championship 18-hole golf course, new nine-hole junior course designed by Tom Watson, and more than 100 full-utility RV campsites and cabins; outstanding elementary, secondary and technical schools, and a schedule of annual art, music and other assorted cultural events and you will readily recognize that Maryville is a place you can easily call home. State-of-the-art medical and health-care facilities are anchored by SSMHealth St. Francis Hospital and augmented by metropolitan specialties and facilities in nearby St. Joseph, Kansas City, Des Moines and Omaha. SSMHealth Medical Group, including its Behavioral Health practice, is another reason to take a serious look at Maryville. Whether you anticipate opening a new business, joining one of our many existing professional services or retail businesses, or are looking for the opportune place to relocate in anticipation of your retirement years, we think you will like what Maryville has to offer. Whatever your reason for considering Maryville as a part of your life or business, we thank you for your interest — and we promise to do everything within our power to make you welcome — today and for always.

Community Quality of Life

Leadership Maryville is an annual effort coordinated by the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce in order to identify and develop future leadership of the community, and promote networking between various businesses and groups.

Maryville affords its citizens ample opportunities to maximize their artistic, cultural and entertainment interests. Whether it is a night’s relaxation at an Encore Performance on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University, the pursuit of ancestral history at the Nodaway County Historical Society Museum, a visit to the Maryville Public Library, or a visit to an art show on the Courthouse Square or the campus, you will have the chance to satisfy yourself. The city’s library, conveniently located on Main Street, two blocks north of the Square, offers current popular titles in traditional as well as electronic format, periodicals, magazines, CDs, videos and other materials in its expanded and updated facility. Built in 1904 as Maryville’s post office and the beneficiary of two expansion projects, the library houses more than 45,000 volumes in its varied collection and checks out more than 78,000 items per year. A wide assortment of programs for children and adults is available on a regular basis. Wireless internet access is available through eight terminals, in addition to wireless service throughout 4

the building. The Friends of the Library is an active support group which provides financial assistance for various projects. The Nodaway County Historical Society Museum is home to an outstanding collection of artifacts, resource materials and a genealogical library. Self-guided tours include the main building, the nearby Caleb Burns House and the Hickory Grove one-room school house. The museum periodically hosts traveling exhibits from area and national museums, including The Smithsonian Institution. The community also benefits from several smaller collections on the Northwest campus. They include the Stucky Radio and Electronic Museum in Wells Hall, the Geological Museum in the Garrett-Strong Science Building, and the Ag Museum in the Volk Agricultural Professions Center. The Encore Series at Northwest sponsors a varied cultural entertainment series during each school year. Open to the public, Encore hosts dance and musical performances and stage productions in the 1,100-seat Mary Linn Auditorium in the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts on campus. The Maryville Aquatic Center is just one of many municipal offerings adding to Maryville’s quality of life.

Studio Theater has been an integral part of the Houston Center since 2008. The university’s annual Distinguished Lecture Series is also open to the public. Fine art exhibits from national as well as local artists are regularly displayed in the Olive Deluce Gallery on the university campus, which also boasts an 11,000-square-foot Fire Arts Center for ceramic arts. Student and faculty recitals and performances are given in the Charles Johnson Theater on campus. The Nodaway County community theater provides a variety of entertainment throughout the year in the Rose Theater in downtown Maryville. Maryville boasts active service and fraternal organizations, including Eagles and Elks lodges, Lions, Optimist and Rotary clubs. The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and their auxiliaries are also active in the county, as well as Daughters of the American Revolution. A vibrant Senior Center of Nodaway County, 1210 E. First St., offers a regular variety of meals and activities for the area’s mature citizens. The always popular Downtown Sounds Concert and Events Series, sponsored by the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce, takes place in the summer months around the Courthouse Square. It features musical and comedic acts and has recently added a Kids Block Party to the schedule. The third weekend in July brings the traditional Nodaway County Fair to Downtown Maryville. Other local festivals are held throughout Nodaway County in Barnard, Burlington Junction, Conception, Elmo, Graham, Guilford, Hopkins, Parnell, Ravenwood and Skidmore. Spiritual life in Maryville centers around more than 20 churches representing a broad spectrum of Christian faiths, ranging from Roman Catholic parishes to a wide variety of Protestant denominations. Baptist, Christian, Lutheran, Methodist and Roman Catholic student facilities are operated for Northwest Missouri State University students and there is also an Episcopal student organization.

Much of the religious outreach activity in the community is coordinated through the Maryville Ministerial Fellowship, which provides an ecumenical approach to Christian service. The major outreach by members of the alliance is the operation of the Ministry Center, a facility that helps the less fortunate in the community. Food, clothing, home heating assistance and emergency funding are routinely made available to qualified participants. Many of the area churches also cooperate in providing interfaith services and study groups throughout the year. Aside from the many churches in Maryville and throughout the county, the single most impressive religious community in the area is located in the Conception-Clyde area east of Maryville. The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception — designated by Pope Pius XII in 1941 as one of only 33 basilicas in the United States — is the centerpiece of the Benedictine community at Conception. The basilica and its Beuron murals have benefitted from a two-decade restoration costing $9 million that was completed in 1999. Conception Abbey was founded in 1873 and designated as an abbey in 1881. Today, the abbey population numbers 65 monks who celebrate the Eucharist and Liturgy of the Hours daily. They also staff and administer the facilities there, including the Conception Abbey, St. Benedict Monastery, Seminary College, and the Printery House, a commercial printing business specializing in religious cards and other materials. The monks also serve as parish priests and hospital chaplains in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph and other dioceses. The Benedictine Convent of Perpetual Adoration located at Clyde is one of three convents for Benedictine Sisters in the United States. It houses a Religious Relics Museum containing 550 documented saint artifacts, thought to be the largest such collection in America, and is currently undergoing a major renovation. The sisters produce more than 2 million altar breads weekly that are distributed across the United States and in nine foreign countries. The convent also markets Monastery Scents, a popular line of hand and bath soap. Greater Maryville Chamber

Maryville Public Schools The Maryville R-II School District successfully trains the community’s young people in an atmosphere of excellence, producing results unsurpassed anywhere in the Midwest. Those results are readily evident, not only in the modern facilities housing the Eugene Field Elementary School, Maryville Middle School, Maryville High School and the Northwest Technical School, but in the level of excellence achieved by their more than 1,900 students. The district holds a AAA rating through the Missouri School Improvement Program and is “Accredited with Distinction” as a result of meeting the 14 standards linked to the program. Licensed counselors and nurses are on staff at each school to promote emotional and physical well-being and growth. The student-teacher ratio throughout the district is a commendable 16-1 and more than 94 percent of all students entering the system are graduated from high school. 8

Inside recently expanded facilities, the top-flight Eugene Field Elementary School faculty and staff enhance the lives of the school’s more than 565 preschool through fourth-grade students in a wide variety of ways. All students have access to the Internet through networked computers in each classroom and each benefits from nationally recognized wellness and nutrition programs. Maryville Middle School is housed in a modern facility located near the high school. Approximately 435 students take advantage of the latest learning tools with computers in every classroom as well as a state-of-the art computer laboratory. Instrumental and vocal music are offered at MMS, as well as intramural and competitive sports teams and a wide range of other extracurricular activities. Those programs enable Maryville’s middle school to continue the level of excellence that earned its program an “Exemplary Schools in the United States” designation from the United States

Department of Education. The approximately 435 students at Maryville R-II High School are encouraged to take advantage of as many of the school’s 121 units of credit as possible during their careers at MHS. The district’s comprehensive curriculum also offers college credit courses in cooperation with Northwest Missouri State University. The high school is a beneficiary of the addition of up-to-date science laboratory classrooms and other enhancements to the physical plant. There is more to high school than outstanding academics offered in modern settings, however, and the various Maryville Spoofhound sports teams and marching band are testimony to that. A full spectrum of sports opportunities is available to both boys and girls and a winning tradition pervades. The football team won back-toback state football championships in its class in 2012 and 2013. “What is a Spoofhound, anyway?” The answer is best left for a full explanation from an alum or present-day coach or player. It is a unique team name, to say the least, but opponents across the state know that, year-in and yearout, the ’Hounds are a force to be reckoned with. The Northwest Technical School serves more than 450 students from the surrounding five-county area. Offerings in 15 different areas of specialization are designed specifically to meet the needs of area business and industry. The technical school also provides post-secondary training leading to licensed practical nurses’ certification. Its adult education programs include short courses in computers, electronics, woodworking, technical skills and self-improve10

ment, among others. These offerings are usually available in the evenings so they do not conflict with students’ work schedules. Maryville elementary and middle school students also have the choice to take advantage of two private school programs. Horace Mann Laboratory School on the Northwest Missouri State campus provides an excellent learning environment for prekindergarten through sixth-grade students. In addition to its private school atmosphere, Horace Mann also provides on-site training for education majors at the university. St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic School has classes for preschool through eighth grade in facilities that are adjacent to the church. The school’s fully certified faculty offers a comprehensive curriculum complemented by faith development. Northwest Missouri State University Northwest Missouri State University and Maryville — names that are synonymous with quality and culture across Missouri and throughout the Midwest. The presence of the four-year, regional state university enhances the quality of life for the city’s residents, and is a catalyst that attracts educational, cultural, political awareness and opportunities to experience the performing arts.
Often called the most beautiful of Missouri’s colleges, Northwest’s 350-acre campus is designated as Missouri’s State Arboretum.
Northwest’s enrollment for the fall trimester of 2015 totaled slightly in excess of 6,700 students from throughout Missouri and the surrounding three-state region, across the United States, and around the world. Incoming freshmen boast an average ACT score of 22.8.

Education Excellence

Of that total enrollment, Northwest claims approximately 360 international students from 31 countries. The majority of those students are from India and the People’s Republic of China. During the most recent trimester, Northwest boasts an enrollment of approximately 63 percent Missouri residents. Northwest students historically perform quite well in the classroom. Freshmen have a fall-to-fall retention rate of 71 percent, compared to the national average of 66 percent for like institutions. Northwest’s graduation rate is 59 percent while the national average for similar institutions is 40 percent. The university’s placement rate — the percentage of graduates who are employed or continuing their education within six months of graduation — is 97 percent for undergraduates and 99 percent for graduate students. Maryville and Northwest continue to enhance a strong “town and gown” relationship that benefits both in many ways. With 253 full-time faculty whose curriculum expertise spans the full spectrum of areas important to improving the community as well as the campus environment, city and county projects and programs are able to readily draw on local “consultants.” Perhaps the most obvious in that category would be the campus’ far-reaching computerized services. What began in 1987 as the nation’s first “Electronic Campus,” featuring a computer in every dormitory room, has matured into a truly electronic campus with every residence hall, classroom and faculty office connected to the university’s state-of-the-art computer center, providing on- and off-campus interactive and Internet services via laptop computers provided to every student. Town-Gown Partnerships More recently, however, the City of Maryville and the university have partnered in additional ongoing community improvement projects. The foremost of those is the cooperative development of a revitalized Fourth Street Corridor to connect the main campus entrance and the city’s downtown square. That project has been recognized for its scope and uniqueness by the International Town-Gown Association. The two entities are also cooperating in various projects to improve off-campus housing in the university area. The university comprises three colleges — Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Services, and the Booth College of Business and Professional Studies — and the School of Health Science and Wellness, offering baccalaureate, masters and educational specialist programs. A doctorate in education is also offered in conjunction with the University of Missouri. Northwest has significantly enhanced its nanoscience programs following the opening of the Dean L. Hubbard Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The $23 million facility is home to ultra-modern classrooms and laboratories for the physical sciences as well as incubator space for cutting-edge business programs. The new facility was recognized by the Southern Growth Initiative with its 2010 Innovation Award for economic development. The overall excellence of the university has been recognized four times — first in 1997, again in 2001 and 2005, and most recently in 2008 — for its overall excellence through the Missouri Quality Awards program. As an innovator in the field of alternative energy through the utilization of waste wood chips, recycled paper pellets and animal waste products, reducing the university’s dependence on petroleum-based fuels has been a goal for more than 25 years. Beginning in 1982, its choice of fuels incrementally shifted to alterna12

tive materials — wood chips (1982), pelletized paper (1992) and animal waste blended with dry feedstocks (2001) — from sources found in Missouri and adjacent states. Using funds from the Missouri Department of Economic Development, equipment was purchased to add a second production line dedicated to producing biomass fuels from a variety of agricultural and agribusiness waste resources in a $700,000 addition to its existing Biomass Processing Center. The university acquired a U.S. patent for its “animal waste to energy production” process in 2000. In 2001, it received the top rank of “Environmental Friendliness” by the National Wildlife Federation. After more than 25 years of operation, the use of alternative fuel sources has saved in excess of $12.5 million. The savings have been reallocated into the university’s instructional programs and to enhance salaries. Bearcat Athletics Fans from the campus and community alike support Northwest’s successful intercollegiate athletic programs. A perennial power in the burgeoning Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, the school’s Bearcat football teams won NCAA Division II national championships to climax the 1998, 1999, 2009 and 2013 seasons. The Bearcat men shared the MIAA basketball championship titles in 2011-12, 2013-14 and 2014-15, advancing to the Elite 8 in the last two of those seasons. The women won MIAA regular sea14

son and tournament titles in 2010-11 and advanced to the NCAA Final 4, the school’s first ever. The men’s and women’s basketball teams were both MIAA champions in 2003 and 2008. Other varsity sports include men’s and women’s track and field, cross country and tennis; men’s baseball, and women’s volleyball, softball, soccer and golf. Northwest’s cheer and dance squads traditionally rank among the best in their field in the NCAA, the cheerleaders having claimed multiple national titles. Conception Seminary College Established in 1886, Conception Seminary College is one of the largest of the 40 Roman Catholic college seminaries in the nation and one of only 15 with a complete four-year academic curriculum. Conception strives today, as it did a century ago, to fulfill the needs of the Roman Catholic Church for candidates for the ordained ministry through spiritual, intellectual, and character formation in the Benedictine tradition. In the best Benedictine tradition, Conception Seminary College promotes academic excellence, character formation and spiritual growth. The operation of Conception Seminary College is the primary apostolate of the Benedictine monks of Conception Abbey. Conception Seminary College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Mozingo Lake Recreation Park plays host to numerous hunting and fishing events each year.

Maryville can legitimately proclaim itself as the recreational center of northwest Missouri. Easily. The headliner for that claim is the state-park-quality 3,000acre Mozingo Lake Recreation Park located five miles east of the city, just north of U.S. Highway 136 and west of Liberty Road. The centerpieces of the multi-use recreational area are the 1,000-acre lake that is its namesake and its golf courses — the Sechrest 18 championship regulation course and the newly completed Watson 9 junior course which was set to open in 2016. Those two premier features are only the beginning, however. Other available amenities include fully furnished cabins, recreational vehicle and tent-camping sites, a youth camp area and other amenities. 16

A new Mozingo Lake website was recently launched, making for the convenient reservation of lake amenities. Mozingo Lake was constructed as a water supply, flood control and recreational reservoir. Construction of the earthen dam began in 1992 and completed in 1995. The lake reached full pool in 1996. This fantastic outdoor recreational facility takes a backseat to no other man-made lake in Missouri. It was constructed, primarily with federal funding, to ensure a drought-proof water source for Maryville and to assist with flood control, but it has developed into what many enthusiasts consider to be the best fishing spot in the state, and one of the best in the country. Three boat-launch ramps provide access for fishing, pleasure boating, jet skiing and water skiing. A sand beach for lake swimming is also available.

Mozingo Lake Recreation Park Boating is one of many outdoor activities available at Mozingo Lake Recreation Park.

In 1993, bluegills were stocked into Mozingo Lake; catfish and bass were introduced the following year to supplement the inundated farm pond populations already present. In 1996, the Missouri Department of Conservation introduced walleye to further enhance Mozingo’s fishing opportunities.

‘This fantastic outdoor recreational facility takes a backseat to no other manmade lake in Missouri.’ Fishing access to the lake is available from the three paved fishing ramps as well as along many stretches of its 26 miles shoreline. The lake is a crappie fishermen’s paradise in the spring and fall and a prime destination for bass fishermen throughout the year. Various tournaments are weekly occurrences from early spring through mid-November, attracting competitors from several nearby states. In recent years, the stringer weights from Mozingo Lake tournaments have been the heaviest in Missouri and numerous fishing reports and publications cite the lake as being one of the 100 best fisheries in the United States. Nestled among rolling hills, native grasslands and wooded areas at the south end of the lake, the Mozingo Lake Recreation Park’s golfing opportunities are unequaled in the Midwest. The Sechret 18 championship course has done nothing but improve since being nominated as “The Best New Public Golf Course in America” by Golf Digest magazine in 1996. It is augmented by the new-in-2015 Watson 9 junior course, designed by Tom Watson, the iconic touring professional with eight major tournament victories to his credit, including five British Open championships. The Watson 9 is designed principally for teaching the game as a lifetime sport to youngsters, but it also provides a stern challenge as an executive course. Promoted by a group of local golf enthusiasts spearheaded by Dr. Bruce Twaddle, the 1,600-yard youth course was primarily funded locally and will provide a venue for an extensive, area-wide teaching program serving a multi-county area. The original 18-hole course was designed by Donald Sechrest, the author of more than 90 courses throughout the Midwest, and opened for play in 1995. It offers a challenge for all skill levels, stretching from 5,242 yards to its par-72 maximum of 7,135 yards. The layout has a course rating of 73.5 and a slope rating of 134 on rye grass. The Sechrest 18 layout has been designated as “the best moderately priced golf course in Missouri” by USA TODAY, which, along with Golf Digest, calls it the “best course to play

in the state of Missouri for under $50.” The clubhouse and pro shop, which were remodeled in 2013, incorporate a historic silo into the barn-motif design of the building. A driving range, putting green, golf cart rental and individual or group lessons are part of the golfing amenities available at Mozingo. The course’s overall playability has been enhanced most recently by the addition of an all-weather, concrete path system. Numerous tournaments are held each year at Mozingo, including charitable events as well as collegiate and high school matches and tournaments. The course is the home links for the women’s golf team at Northwest Missouri State University and for Maryville and other area high schools. Seasonal playing passes are offered, in addition to daily greens fees. RVs, cabins and camping Mozingo’s public accommodations include overnight/extended-stay cabins; a full-service RV park and tent camping for visitors wanting to take advantage of the lake or the various hiking trails; covered picnic shelters, and outdoor physical fitness and leadership training facilities. Limited game bird hunting is permitted in season. The city operates its 95-space recreational vehicle park on a

year-round basis, although the major activities are in the summer, ending, for all practical purposes, with the annual Halloween festivities at the park in late October. The majority of the sites (75) are available on a space-available basis, but there are 20 spaces that may be reserved in advance. The RV park provides water and electricity, showers and restroom facilities, a dump station and a playground for younger campers. It is supervised during the peak summer season by a full-time park host.

‘Maryville can legitimately proclaim itself as the recreational center of northwest Missouri.’ The RV park area is connected to the Lookout Point area of the lake by a concrete hiking and biking trail completed in conjunction with the city’s expanding hiking/biking trail system. Five cabins that can accommodate from six to 12 persons are located near the RV park. The fully equipped, modern units are extremely popular and advance reservations are recommended. All are fully furnished, have fireplaces and beautiful Greater Maryville Chamber

lake views. Two additional cabins built by the Northwest Technical School building trades classes during the 2013-14 school year are located nearby. They also have wonderful views of the lake and golf course and are readily accessible to picnic shelters. There are 37 tent camping sites available in a more secluded, wooded area between the RV park and the swimming beach. Picnic shelters and tables are located on and around Lookout Point. Youth Camp and MOERA The Mozingo Youth Camp is extremely popular for its unique combination of five rustic cabins and an ultra-modern kitchen and dining facility. An adjacent tent-camping area is available to take care of larger gatherings. The Mozingo Outdoor Education Recreation Area is situated on 320 acres operated by Northwest Missouri State Uni20

versity along the shore of Mozingo Lake. MOERA patrons can take part in recreational activities, including a challenge course for developing leadership and teamwork skills. The course features a 50-foot Alpine climbing tower and climbing wall, a low elements obstacle course, kayaking facilities, trap shooting and an archery range. It is popular with local residents and university students as well as area corporations which use it for team-building and retreat experiences. Mozingo Equestrian Trail A five-plus-mile equestrian trail located along the western shore of Mozingo Lake is constantly being upgraded and expanded. The most significant improvements include the addition of 13 full-service RV pads and restroom facilities at the trailhead area on the west side of the lake, approximately four miles north of the dam.

Recreation and Tourism

The annual Chamber Country Classic, a Boston Marathon qualifier, draws participants from across the United States. The recently expanded Maryville Recreation Center, Beal Park and its Maryville Aquatic Center, and Donaldson Westside Park and Sports Complex are the primary destinations within Maryville’s elaborate network of city parks and playgrounds. The Maryville Parks and Recreation Department has primary operational responsibilities for the city’s facilities, including its 10 city parks. Located in various geographical sections of the city, the parks include athletic fields, shelters, playground equipment, walking trails and historically significant sites. The Parks and Recreation Department, a separate entity from the City of Maryville, is governed by a citizen’s board. Its annual budget, however, requires city council approval. The Maryville Community Center, the city’s versatile “Rec Center,” is undoubtedly the focal point for year-round physical activity, so much so that Maryville voters overwhelmingly passed a proposition to fund additional meeting rooms and exercise space and equipment when demand outgrew available space in the original complex. The center’s expansion was completed in 2008, just six years after the complex was originally opened in conjunction with the Missouri National Guard Armory. The gymnasium area provides space for basketball, volleyball and an indoor tennis court. An elevated, 12-laps-per-mile walking track supplements a full complement of cardio-vascular and weight-training equipment. All are open to the public during extended hours of operation that vary seasonally. Rooms for regularly scheduled aerobic training and other classes, as well as for 22

group meetings, are available. The Community Center also provides office space for the MPR director and staff. The latest addition to the recreational landscape in Maryville is the Robert and Virginia Foster Fitness Center in the Rylan Milner Sports Complex on the Northwest Missouri State University campus. Constructed in 2015 in the location previously occupied by the university’s indoor swimming pool, the new facility, is named to honor the university’s seventh president and his wife. The privately operated GetFit 24 and Curves for Women add choice to the full range of health club activities available to city residents and students. Maryville Aquatic Center Maryville’s beautiful municipal swimming pool provides waterbased recreation ranging from zero-depth entry to fountains and water slides that complement its eight 25-meter lanes for competitive swimming. The $2 million facility was built with public funds and has been recognized for the design of its bathhouse and concession areas. Swimming lessons are available through MPR and Red Cross programs each summer. The aquatic center is home to the Maryville Sharks, a youth swim team that is competitive with other area communities. Aquatic exercise is also available at the municipal pool. City Trail System Maryville is developing an extensive system of walking/biking trails throughout the community and the Northwest campus,

Maryville Country Club The Maryville Country Club is located at the city’s western edge and offers a challenging nine-hole golf course. The MCC layout was redone in 1995 and provides a challenge to golfers of all skill levels. The club also offers a newly remodeled clubhouse with dining room and bar and a swimming pool for members and guests. A series of local tournaments is held at the MCC to complement the action at Mozingo Lake Golf Course.

Donaldson Westside Park The 40-acre Donaldson Park is the newest of Maryville’s 10 public parks, and offers the most extensive array of recreational opportunities. It contains four lighted softball fields, five soccer fields, a football field, a skateboard park, playground equipment, shelters and an amphitheater.

Running Runners and walkers are not left out of Maryville’s recreational mix. The area season usually begins with Conception Abbey Trails Day in April, followed by the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Country Classic Marathon, an official qualifying event for the Boston Marathon, and still later in the season, the Maryville Aquatic Center’s annual mini-triathlon. Bowling/Movies Bearcat Lanes is a modern bowling facility offering 16 top condition alleys and modern equipment for the individual bowler as well as numerous league competitors. The Hangar is Maryville’s unique movie theater located on South Main Street. The multi-screen theater, designed and decorated to resemble an airplane hangar, offers first-run movies. One of its five screens is designed in a “dinner theater” setting. Hunting and Fishing Wildlife abounds in northwestern Missouri. Hunting for deer, turkey, waterfowl, quail, pheasant, and other small game such as rabbits and squirrels, is popular throughout the area. In addition to the fine angling at Mozingo Lake, nearby Nodaway Lake and the Bilby Lake and Conservation Area, a vast assortment of private farm ponds can make for some great fishing in the immediate area. Permission is required from landowners to fish the farm ponds, but most are more than willing to provide access to responsible sportsmen. Favorite pond-fish species are bass, crappie, sunfish — bream and bluegill — and catfish. The State of Missouri Conservation Department regulates hunting and fishing and valid licenses and/or permits are required.

eventually connecting to an auxiliary system at the Mozingo Lake Recreational Park area. More than five miles of paved walkways have been added to the community’s trail system since the program’s inception and continuation of the all-weather trail system, coupled with an extensive Safe Routes to School, will eventually encircle the perimeter of the community. More recent additions provide a route linking the SSMHealth St. Francis Hospital campus with both Maryville Middle School and Maryville High and a segment along South Munn Street built in connection with the reconstruction of that main thoroughfare that serves as a primary entrance to the city, Maryville High School and Northwest. The continuing trail program is possible because of significant funding through the Missouri Department of Transportation.

One of numerous new retail developments is a new building for Tri State Ford Lincoln.

A uniquely diverse assortment of light industrial manufacturing, retail stores, and a wide variety of professional enterprises make Maryville a bustling trade center for northwestern Missouri and southwestern Iowa. This successful combination of agricultural, industrial, retail and professional services has brought Maryville to the forefront among Missouri communities and enabled Nodaway County to maintain one of the best employment rates in the state. The vibrant business and agricultural community supports a strong financial community that includes Bank Midwest, Citizens Bank and Trust, Nodaway Valley Bank and U.S. Bank. In addition, a new regional bank, Wells Bank, is opening a new local facility that will serve the Maryville/Nodaway County area. Also, Northwest Missouri Regional Credit Union and FCS Financial cooperative provide financial services to their members. The ever-expanding Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., USA plant located at the south edge of the city is the area’s largest manufacturing employer. The Kawasaki plant employs more than 775 persons, including managers and assembly line personnel, to man its three shifts producing gasoline engines for lawn and garden and outdoor recreational vehicle products. That total does not include workers employed by Focus, which provides more than 300 part-time workers at the plant. Other local industries include Nucor LMP, producers of a variety of steel products; DELUXE Corp., one of the largest check printers in the United States; Federal-Mogul, an international au24

tomotive supplier; Laclede Chain Co.; Maryville Metal Culverts; Robbins Lightning Inc., and Preferred Lightning Protection. Northwest Missouri State University maintains a full-time employment base of some 740 persons while SSM Health St. Francis Hospital has approximately 500 employees. At least a half dozen other employers, including Wal-Mart and Hy-Vee Food Store, maintain payrolls of between 200 and 300 employees. Six local agricultural service firms and implement dealers representing John Deere, New Holland, Caterpillar, Kubota, Bobcat and Agco, support the agricultural economy that flourishes in the trade area. Productive soil types, normally favorable weather and an average of more than 37 inches of annual rainfall combine to make Maryville and Nodaway County one of Missouri’s leading agricultural centers. Principal products include corn, soybeans and cattle. Northwest Missouri State University’s Dean L. Hubbard Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which opened in 2009, provides collaborative research and grant opportunities for industrial tenants and university faculty and students in an environment that nurtures young companies and advances regional economic growth. The center’s state-of-the-art facility houses classrooms and student- and faculty-research laboratories related to Northwest’s undergraduate degree program in nanoscale science as well as a business incubator with emphasis on science- and technology-based start-up companies.

The CIE supports the university’s academic mission by providing students with opportunities for real-world experiences through research, internships, and employment with CIE tenants. At the same time, it connects promising new businesses to the university’s scientific and research resources. The incubator currently hosts nine tenants. Wind Power Northwest Missouri has become a significant location for wind power generation. The nearby Conception Wind Farm is capable of providing 50.4 megawatts of “green” electricity to Associated Electric Cooperative, Inc. AEC is connected to the 69,000-volt electrical transmission system owned and operated by NW Electric Cooperative, Inc. The Conception operation consists of 24 Suzlon S-88 turbines producing renewable electric energy for 20,000 homes. The wind farm developed by Wind Capital Group involves 20 individual landowners and encompasses 7,000 acres. Population Demographics

Population Demographics

Maryville embraces its diverse population, thanks in part to the 6,700 students at Northwest Missouri State University.

Maryville and Nodaway County boast a strong — and stable — history as a favorable location in which to live and work. Year in, year out, the historic rural agricultural base, augmented by solid academic, industrial and professional employers, enables the county to maintain one of the most favorable employment rates in Missouri — ranking at or above the state and area average for almost every quarter since before 1990. The percentage of Nodaway County persons over 25 with advanced degrees is twice the national average. As is the case with most non-metropolitan areas in the United States today, Nodaway County’s population is below its historical high, but continues to hold steady at approximatly 24,000. The county’s current population is reported to be 23,880, based on estimates from the U.S. Census. Of that total, Maryville has an estimated 2015 population of 12,318, which, coupled with the population of the adjoining areas outside the city limits that are included in Polk Township, increases the immediate area’s count to more than 15,800. The median age of Maryville residents is 23.9 years old, with 45.1 percent falling into the 15-to-24-year-old category. Another 32

of

24.7 percent of the city population is between 25 and 54 years old. The median age of all Nodaway County residents is 29.5 years old, and they boast a median household income of $40,166. The diverse cultural population of Maryville and Nodaway County reflects a higher level of education than other communities of its size in Missouri, and nationally. More than 92.2 percent of our residents 25 years old and older are high school graduates, or the equivalent, compared to 87.6 percent in Missouri and 86 percent across the nation. In Nodaway County, the percentage of residents with an earned degree from a four-year institution is approximately the same as both the state and the United States. However, the 17.8 percent of residents holding a graduate degree is more than twice the national average. The county population includes 17.2 percent of the 23,880 total who are under 18 years old. Those aged 65 and older account for 15.2 percent of the county’s population. Northwest Missouri State University is the largest employer in the area with more than 800 employees. Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp, USA, is the largest manufacturing employer with a payroll of 750 persons. Hy-Vee leads retail employers with 300 workers.

Well-Connected Location

A large contingent of northwest Missouri leadership visits the capitol in Jefferson City during Great Northwest Days.

Maryville is located near the geographic center of northwestern Missouri, the Quad-State area — and the entire United States. The city is situated at the junction of U.S. Highway 71, one of the country’s major north-south thoroughfares, and U.S. 136, an eastwest route linking Indianapolis with western Nebraska. Maryville is also approximately midway between Interstates 29 and 35, placing it near the hub of one of the major Midwest highway networks. As a primary four-lane route traversing from the nation’s northern boundary at International Falls, Minnesota, to near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, U.S. 71 through Maryville connects with I-29 34

just north of St. Joseph, 35 miles south. U.S. 136, meanwhile, provides Maryville’s east-west connection to the interstate system. It is approximately 40 miles west to its intersection with I-29 at Rock Port, Missouri. Highway 136 also connects with I-35, another major north-south highway in the central United States, 57 miles east at Bethany, Missouri. I-35 links Duluth, Minnesota, and Laredo, Texas, serving both the Minneapolis-St. Paul and Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan areas along its route. Using major interstate routes or the less-traveled federal and

state highway systems, Maryville is conveniently located near Kansas City (95 miles to the south; an hour and a half travel time), Omaha, Nebraska, (112 miles north, less than two hours), and Des Moines, Iowa (159 miles northeast; two and a half hours). Local air service is available through two Maryville airports, the municipal Northwest Missouri Regional Airport, and privately operated Rankin Field.

The city-operated facility has a newly reconstructed 4,600-by75-foot hard-surface runway, an adjacent taxiway and complete fuel service, making it fully compatible with corporate jet aircraft. Rankin Field has a 3,050-by-25-foot hard-surface runway and taxiway. Both are lighted and offer maintenance and hangar facilities. Combined average weekly air traffic exceeds 150 flights. Commercial airline service with connections to any destination in the country is most conveniently available at the Mid-Continent International Airport in Kansas City (80 miles south) and through Omaha’s Eppley Field (115 miles north). Amtrak rail connections to major east-west routes are available from Creston, Iowa, (70 miles north), three Kansas City-area sta-

tions, and Omaha. Maryville also has scheduled ground transportation service via Jefferson Bus Lines to nearby connecting stops in Kansas City, Springfield and Omaha.

Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney Robert Rice talks to eighth-graders during County Government Day.

The first-class, day-to-day operation of the City of Maryville’s business is a far cry from its official classification as a Class 3 city, a state-mandated categorization based principally on having a population of between 3,000 and 30,000 persons. City of Maryville Maryville, the county seat of Nodaway County, is governed by a council/manager form of government, a system that has proven to be highly successful for the community. It has historically functioned well, not only in managing the city’s overall business and services, but also in working hand-in-glove with Nodaway County commissioners, local officials elected to represent the area at the state and federal levels, and state governmental offices in Jefferson City. The five city council members are elected to serve staggered 36

three-year terms. They, in turn, elect a fellow councilperson as mayor on an annual basis. The actual day-to-day responsibilities of the city’s operation are handled by a professional city manager and an assistant city manager who oversee the administration of the various departments within the city and make policy recommendations to the city council. Maryville Public Safety Maryville’s Public Safety Department provides the community’s police and fire protection, including 911 emergency response services. All public safety officers are trained not only as law enforcement officers, but also as fire fighters to assist the community’s volunteer fire department. members — a presiding commissioner and associate commissioners representing North and South districts in the county — elected to oversee the county’s business. The commissioners work closely with locally elected officers from 15 townships (smaller political subdivisions within the county) to coordinate various services related to roads, bridges and drainage. Voters in each township elect a trustee, two board members, and a clerk to represent their interests. The Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department provides capable law enforcement services throughout the county, including the operation of an enhanced 911 system. The majority of Nodaway County officials’ offices are located in a modern multi-story county Administration Center at the northeast corner of East Fourth and Market streets, adjacent to the Maryville City Hall and diagonally northeast from the picturesque Nodaway County Courthouse. Public meeting spaces are available in the new administrative building. The office of the prosecuting attorney, the circuit courtrooms and offices for the judges and clerk of the court remain in the courthouse. That building, constructed in 1881 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is situated in the center of the square in Maryville’s downtown. The Courthouse is the focal point of a multi-million-dollar revitalization project that includes a complete revamping of the Downtown Maryville square’s landscaping, streets, and intersections.

relationship with the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department, the Missouri Highway Patrol and Northwest Missouri State University Campus Safety officers. Maryville Public Works The Maryville Public Works Department has full responsibilities for the operation and maintenance of the city’s infrastructure, including streets, water and wastewater lines and the storm drainage system. The city’s consistently updated water treatment plant, located east of the U.S. Highway 71 Bypass, and the city’s new, ultra-modern $13.75 million wastewater treatment plant that became fully operational July 1, 2015, are operated by PeopleService, Inc., independent municipal and industrial service contractors headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. The Maryville Public Works Department also encompasses the building, zoning, and code enforcement functions of city government, utilizing a trained, professional staff and modern geographic information systems to assist in its administration and decisions. Maryville’s finance department has responsibility for the city’s accounting and financial reporting, as well as handling the billing and collections for water and sewer services. The city budgets have received the highest levels of recognition from state and national accrediting agencies in recent years. The Maryville City Hall, located at 415 N. Market, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays. Nodaway County The Nodaway County Commission is composed of three

History A Proud Past

This stone marks the location of Maryville’s first home, built in 1844.

From the time in 1845 when Nodaway County was designated to be the largest of six political subdivisions in the relatively new state of Missouri, the county and Maryville, its county seat, have served the governmental, cultural and academic centers of northwestern Missouri. Nodaway County, the fourth largest of 114 counties in Missouri, encompasses 878 square miles of fertile agricultural land that were a part of the Platte Purchase of 1836, when the Sac, Fox and Iowa Indians relinquished, through treaty, their rights to the huge tract they had only recently been assigned. The entire area was once covered with tall, waving prairie grasses on the uplifts or “nar38

rows” and uncluttered by trees except along the three north-tosouth rivers and the smaller creeks. The origin of the name, Nodaway, is generally attributed to the Pottawatomie word for “placid.” Other possible origins include the Dakota Sioux word for “crossed without canoe,” and “snake,” from several indigenous languages. Maryville was named in honor of Mary Graham, the wife of Amos Graham, the town’s first postmaster and the Nodaway County clerk. Mary was the first Caucasian woman to live within the boundaries of the settlement, incorporated in 1856. The current population is generally of Central European decent,

primarily from the German, Scottish and Irish who settled the area. The county’s current population has retained that rural heritage and strong work ethic.

‘Maryville was named in honor of Mary Graham, the wife of Amos Graham, the town’s first postmaster and the Nodaway County clerk.’ President Herbert Hoover once owned a farm near Graham and the Bilby Ranch, founded near Quitman, had holdings throughout the West. At one time, it claimed to be second in size only to the King Ranch in Texas. Rancho del Rayo, established near Hopkins by William Robbins, who amassed his wealth producing lightning rods, proclaimed itself as the largest ranch in Missouri after the dissolution of the Bilby Ranch.

Two Nodaway County farms were famous for their horses and horse-racing connections. Isaac N. Prather settled on a farm just west of Maryville in 1839. He imported a famous English thoroughbred, Faustus, and named his farm Faustiana after the horse. The stables were home to Elwood, the 1904 Kentucky Derby winner. The Townsend family later used the name for its horse farm and it continues today as the name of a Maryville residential area. Thoroughbred trainers Ben A. Jones and Horace A. “Jimmy” Jones farmed, and retired, near Parnell. During their time at Kentucky’s Calumet Farms, the Jones father-and-son team trained six Kentucky Derby champions and two Triple Crown winners. Famous natives of Nodaway County include Sarah Caldwell of the Boston Opera; Dale Carnegie, author of “How to Win Friends and Influence People” and developer of self- improvement courses; Homer Croy, whose books depict life in Maryville; Albert P. Morehouse, Missouri governor (1888-1890), Forrest C. Donnell, Missouri governor (1941-1945) and U.S. Senator (1945-51); U.S. Sen. Edward H. Moore of Oklahoma, and World War II Medal of Honor-winner Albert David. Greater Maryville Chamber
