New MPS building, consolidated dispatch set up future opportunities Police, fire move into new, permanent home

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Despite all the regular issues massive projects like this must overcome, despite a negotiation that hadn’t been settled for 30 years and despite a pandemic popping up in the middle of construction, the new R. Keith Wood Maryville Public Safety facility began operation in earnest last fall — under budget and on time — marking the end of multiple journeys and the beginning of a new one.

A professional space At the beginning of 2020, Maryville’s police and firefighters were working in a cramped, old grocery store, retrofitted in the 1970s, with narrow hallways and many shared spaces that had become a way of life.

Officers were making do with an evidence room secured by chicken wire from the top. There was only one interview room, a straight shot from a waiting area that could make for some awkward situations if a victim and a suspect were both in the building at the same time.

And it wasn’t unheard of for a conference room to be home to evidence from a drug bust at 10 a.m., and an officer’s lunch at noon.

Firefighters had to fit their equipment in limited space that wasn’t really made for it, and in the garage bay, even the soda smelled like diesel exhaust because of poor ventilation.

But by the end of 2020, all those

“Everywhere I look, it’s such an upgrade,” said Maryville Police Chief Ron Christian in September when the new building opened.

“But really, the overall theme is just that we have more specialty spaces. … We now have separate interview rooms, our dispatch office is more distinct, separate. Our booking room isn’t multifunctional, so we’re excited to be able to

have a greater separation for those people who need our services.”

A much larger, secure evidence room that tracks comings and goings is designed to hold evidence for up to 30 years if necessary.

And then there are the quality of life improvements, like larger locker rooms and lockers with built-in USB ports, and a multiuse, state-of-the-art conference room that will be used neither for lunch nor as a stopover for drug bust evidence.

“Just … silly little things that people laugh at when I tell them,

but it means a lot to us, like having a restroom in the front lobby area,” Christian said. “You don’t really think about that, but (at the previous facility), if someone needs to use the restroom, they’ve got to have an officer come in and escort them into the back of the building, and if I’ve got someone in the back who’s been arrested — it’s just going to be (a) so much more professional environment, and hopefully a much more professional experience for people who have need of our services, whether it’s just a casual encoun-

ter or even if it’s an arrest or being a victim or whatnot. So we’re just excited about the increase in space and some of the specialty areas that allow us to do our jobs a lot more effectively.”

Some parts of the building aren’t just upgrades over existing facilities, but new ones that weren’t there before at all: A sally port that will allow officers to pull patrol cars with suspects in custody into a secure part of the building, for example, and the ability to transfer See MPS, A3

them to a new, secure holding cell if necessary.

And a larger, 7,000-square-foot garage with five pull-through bays for fire trucks, capable of housing nearly every fire fighting implement the city owns plus more, designed from the ground up for the purpose, including dedicated showers, washers and dryers, and a new ventilation system to filter out exhaust.

“We’re extremely grateful and appreciative,” Christian said. “We’ve been truly blessed tremendously by this community and we really have high expectations that this facility will help us serve this community in a much more professional and upgraded manner. We will kind of raise those expectations.”

‘It’s finally happening’ The $4 million project began as an item on a wish list in 2012, and in the time between then and when shovel first hit dirt in 2019, the building’s namesake admitted that there were times when it looked like the obstacles might be insurmountable.

“Yeah,” said former MPS Director Keith Wood at the groundbreaking in 2019.

“Almost every day there for a while.”

The first obstacle, like all massive projects, was the funding. Initially, the city planned to combine the new MPS headquarters with a new city hall, but both financial and space constraints nixed that plan early on. Instead, city officials focused on the MPS building, and voters endorsed the idea in 2017 through a capital improvement sales tax. Then, a deal for the land with the Maryville R-II school district came through, giving the project a home.

But one major obstacle that had eluded public safety and government officials for 30 years still loomed large: a consolidated 911 dispatch center. The building was to be constructed with a new, larger, secured dispatch center designed for just such a purpose, a “building within a building.”

All that remained was to overcome 30 years of disagreement between city and county officials on just how to combine their dispatch services in time for the new facility’s opening.

And after months of back-and-forth negotiations, that’s exactly what happened, with the historic agreement between the county and city reached just

“It’s been a 30-year project and, here we are, it’s finally happening,” said Jessica Rickabaugh in September, NRC dispatch supervisor, who led the planning and implementation of the new center. “I think it’s a big deal for Nodaway County residents to be able to call one communication center and us to be able to get them whatever they need.

It’s really streamlining that process.

“And then having the updated equipment, we’re on track, ready to grow with the industry now. And that’ll be another good thing for our citizens.”

center, combining city and county employees, is now handling dispatch services for all of Nodaway County.

“One phone call is going to get you everything you need from police, fire or EMS,” Rickabaugh said. “… We’ll have at least two people on duty all the time, so we’ll dispatch for the city, the county, the ambulance (district) and the 10 rural fire districts.”

The center itself was constructed to be a hardened facility to withstand severe weather and keep communications intact during disasters. It was also designed with an eye toward regional expansion should the opportunity arise, including space for more terminals and wir-

ing to accommodate any growth.

After the agreement was reached, Rickabaugh and dispatchers began a sprint to the dispatch center’s “go-live” date of Sept.

30, working overtime to set up and get trained on new systems that were replacing woefully outdated ones, and to ensure they all worked as needed. With the new equipment comes new software and new capabilities also geared toward the future.

“We made that move so we can be one step closer to being able to do those next generation things, 911 things with video and texts,” Rickabaugh said. “Our area is not quite yet capable, but

With consolidated dispatch, police and fire all under one roof, city officials expressed optimism that it

would be their home for decades to come.

“The building has been designed, hopefully, to meet the needs of this community for at least 40, 50 years,” Christian said. “I don’t see any reason why it would not do that.”

Kawasaki adds line, shifts, jobs in 2020

MARYVILLE, Mo. — An increased demand for its products prompted Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., USA to increase its assembly lines and staffing opportunities during 2020.

“We continue to grow just because our product is in big demand,” said Tim Melvin, Human Resources Manager. “We’re run-

ning a lot of overtime right now and it’s because our products sell very well.”

Kawasaki customers are asking for more engines pushing the plant to increase volume both in engine production and staff.

The new assembly line announced in August, is now complete, staffed and in production.

However, the facility also needed more engines in other areas of production. It opened two current as-

sembly lines during second shift to help increase that production.

At the time Kawasaki only ran “Backshop” areas, such as machining and aluminum die casting on second and third shifts. The new lines mark the first time it has run assembly on any shift other than the first.

In August, the company estimated the new lines would create an additional 100 positions and as of Jan. 22, it had those

employees hired and working.

Melvin said the company looks to hire even more, to bulk up those lines.

The opening of second shift also allowed some employees to find a time of day that works better with their lives, he said.

“They are people who appreciate those hours,” he said, noting that some have family considerations that the shift works better for them.

Melvin estimated that 60 to 65 percent of employees at the manufacturing plant are from the Maryville and Nodaway County area. He noted the balance are people mostly from adjoining counties even stretching up into Iowa.

Still in hiring mode, Melvin said there “are still plentiful jobs available,” for anyone interested in a position. Many of those positions do See LINE, A5

The company will teach anyone interested in assembly, starting with its training line.

Melvin said the training line offers a first look at small assembly processes to acquaint new hires with the processes on the floor.

“It just gives them a little bit of a feel, a little bit of an idea of what assembly is like,” Melvin said.

The new lines are a major addition to the progress that Kawasaki has made this year, but they’re not all that the plant had going on during 2020.

Along with regular main-

tenance and upkeep of machinery, Melvin said the company has also been working to build a new security entrance for employees.

Contractor E.L. Crawford has been working throughout the year to build out the new office on the southeast side of the building.

The much larger facility will allow for multiple passthru scanners that will speed up the entrance and exit of employees.

“It’s going to allow for a more efficient entrance and exit of our employees and especially enhance our security efforts,” Melvin said.

It also will feature a heated sidewalk, steps and ADA compliant ramps, to keep ice from building up.

Contractors are looking at a mid-February completion date.

Northwest set to open Agricultural Learning Center

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Through a landmark effort, Northwest Missouri State University is set to open a new, state-of-the-art Agricultural Learning Center this summer.

The 29,500-square-foot, single-story, pre-engineered metal building will include classroom, laboratory, kitchen, exposition and office spaces at the university’s R.T. Wright Farm. The student spaces will allow for research and scholarly activities centered on crop, soil and livestock resources, as well as space for processing agricultural products.

And the multipurpose areas could be used to hold public and private functions such as producer and agricultural industry meetings, workshops, shows and career development events, and the promotion of agricultural literacy.

The university expects the facility will help the School of Agricultural Sciences address enrollment and program growth, which has skyrocketed over the last decade: about 12 percent of all students at Northwest last year held a major in the school, and the university’s agricultural business program is the largest in the state.

Additionally, the center will help address infrastructure needs at R.T. Wright Farm related to academic facilities, parking and farm production, and its learning opportunities will enable innovation and partnerships to address best practices for the campus and the School of Agricultural Sciences.

Wright Farm in Maryville. to be a tremendous resource for the students in the School of Agricultural Sciences, but it will be a great resource for other students here at Northwest Missouri State University, the community and the industry as a whole,” said Rod Barr, director of the School of Agricultural Sciences, in a statement.

Gradually since its conception in 2014, the university has raised money and built support among alumni, state officials and regional partners. More than $6 million has been raised for the center, with leading support provided by nearly 50 public and private donors who have joined the university’s Homesteaders society by providing gifts toward the project of $25,000 or greater. Northwest has also received $2.5 million from the state of Missouri as well as an equipment grant award

of $343,000.

The efforts culminated in a groundbreaking in April of last year — held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think this is a landmark for the university,” Barr said last year. “I remember (Northwest President John Jasinski) talking about it being a linchpin. Well, we just

put a stake in the ground.

I’m very excited.”

The cost for the facility itself is estimated at about $9.8 million, but the addition of a turn lane off of U.S. Highway 71, paving a drive to the new center and other roadwork pushed the total cost up to about $11.4 million. The final piece of the funding puzzle fell into place

in October when John Cline, a 1975 graduate of Northwest, pledged a six-figure gift to meet the remainder of the fundraising goal.

Cline, a member of the Northwest Foundation’s Board of Directors and whose family had owned the land that will house the center prior to Northwest, cited his parents and his sister, as well as

former Northwest President Robert Foster and current President Jasinski as motivating factors for his gift.

“Family is everything,” Cline said at a Board of Regents meeting where he announced his gift. “I’m able to give, and I just thought it was a great thing to do.”

Jasinski said at the same meeting that the Agricultural Learning Center wasn’t just a victory for the university, but the region.

“Three years ago, we (heard from) our neighbors down in St. Joe — in the business community, academic leaders and so on — they were talking about the Ag Expo Center down there, and they told us not to build our Ag Learning Center,” Jasinski said at the time. “John Cline just put that right there and said, ‘it’s done.’ … The Ag Expo Center will not exist down in St. Joseph. That’s because Northwest does what we say we’re going to do.”

Although the Northwest Foundation’s fundraising goal for the project is fulfilled, support is still being sought. The university has committed more than $2 million to the project, and any additional funds raised will allow the university to direct those funds to other campus needs. Furthermore, additional funds raised will assist outfitting the facility’s laboratories and classrooms with the most up-to-date equipment and technology.

MARYVILLE, Mo. — The shifting needs of Maryville High School has always prompted the district to be creative when thinking about its available space and this year part of that focus was on the Multi, a multipurpose building located just southwest of the football field.

Throughout the fall semester and continuing into this year, MHS Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Adam Townsend has led his crew through a re-imagining of the space available and what could be done with it.

The space used to include the weight room, a laundry space, restrooms and a concession stand and while it will still house space for these uses, the space has been reorganized to provide better facilities for men and women attending sporting events as well as more space for the concession stand.

“What I really like about it was that it makes good use of space that was basically storage and probably wasn’t being utilized nearly as well as this,” Townsend said. “It had kind of become a catch-all area. I feel like we kind of regained that space and put it to good use. I think it was a real improvement in the use of the square footage down there.”

Townsend explained one of the largest improvements is the women’s restroom.

It’s in a completely new location and is much larger.

used to be 96 square feet, it now has 285 square feet.

With the entrance just to the east of the concession stand, the restroom provides six new stalls, one that’s wheel-chair accessible and many more sinks than the old restroom had.

“It was actually pretty involved, not difficult exactly, but it took some doing,” Townsend said.

Cutting through the concrete on that side and connecting to the sewer from that location made it one of the more challenging parts of the project.

By moving the women’s restroom, it allowed crews to increase the size of the concession stand and the men’s restroom, which also will allow for a wheel chair accessible stall and an additional sink.

“We’re pretty proud of it,” Townsend said.

“We installed a new breaker box in the concession stand,” he said.

The concession stand, now also larger thanks to the rearrangement, grew from 225 square-feet to 330 square-feet.

“It’s deeper,” he said. “We added four feet to the back of it. … I personally think it’s a little more useful the way it is too.”

It also now features a three-bay stainless steel sink.

The project is not quite complete, but Townsend estimates it is possible that it will be ready for spring sports.

“I think it all went kind of as planned really,” he said. “I don’t think we ran into anything we weren’t expecting.”

White Elm opens, brings new products to Maryville

MARYVILLE, Mo. — When White Elm Mercantile opened in October, owner Stephanie Campbell said the idea was to offer lifestyles items and home décor.

Also owner of Blue Willow, both in Maryville and St. Joseph, Campbell had a place for clothing and accessories, but wanted to help provide an

upscale shop for décor and lifestyles gift items.

She mentioned that Maryville has lost a couple local gift shops in the last couple years, so she wanted a place people could go to refresh their homes.

“The vibrancy of our local community is key for me,” she said “That’s why I keep doing what I’m doing.”

Main St. As a member of Four Horsemen Properties LLC, she’s also a part owner in the upcoming Black Pony Brewery located on another corner of Downtown Maryville.

“The love of this community especially right now, it feels very fractured, and something like this is something we can come together around, keeping our money local and our shopping local,” she said.

At White Elm, the two closed in August and opened in October, which for them, was a much quicker turn-

around than they had with the building next door, but it was not without its own problems.

“It was horrible,” she said.

“It had carpet. All the walls were covered. It had the ugly drop-ceiling in here.”

So tearing out the carpet and pulling down that dropceiling led to the discovery of the original decorative tin ceiling, in very good shape. The building was gutted. The flooring was not salvageable, but quickly re-

placed. And a new HVAC system was installed.

“Downtown is the heart of the community,” Campbell said. “The heart of our community has struggled for many years. These buildings have just been neglected.”

She said while many people might consider it a good idea to knock them down and start over, they were built to last, having stood for 140 years.

“They’re going to stand for a hundred more as long as we don’t set them on fire,” she said.

In the back of White Elm she warehouses products for both of her Maryville stores.

It’s also where the office is for each.

Campbell and Yount live next door above Blue Willow, but above White Elm will be two Air BNB units available for renters. It will have all the exposed beams, exposed brick and big windows just like her place.

They’re about halfway done with that project.

How has business been?

Just getting back from market, she said new items are about to hit the floor, but

that it’s been a busy time.

She said they refresh their gifts on a regular basis and that shoppers can expect to see something new very regularly.

“All the new stuff coming for spring will be great,” she said.

She mentioned the store also will feature a new “foodie” line such as bloody mary mixes, dip mixes and even kitchen gear.

‘Let’s go’: South Main overhaul set to begin

MARYVILLE, Mo. — At a meeting in July of last year, City Council member Rachael Martin spoke for all the city officials in attendance after the council voted to formally approve a $10.5 million grant from the federal government for the South Main Corridor Improvement Project.

“Let’s go,” she said excitedly.

After nearly a decade of planning, and then with added delays and uncertainty from a global pandemic tacked on just before shovels were set to turn dirt, the massive infrastructure overhaul that will transform 1 ½ miles of South Main Street in Maryville is getting underway.

When it’s complete, the stretch of South Main from the U.S. Highway 71 bypass to South Avenue will see numerous functional and aesthetic upgrades, including: • Replacement of the traffic signals at the South Avenue and State Route V intersection • New traffic light at a realigned north entrance to Walmart • Realigned access points to and from business along the corridor • Enclosed storm sewer system

City Manager Greg McDanel told The Forum that construction will likely begin in March, starting with utility relocation.

All told, the project — easily the largest and most ambitious infrastructure overhaul in the city’s history — could be completed within about 24 months or so.

During construction, McDanel

said that all properties along the road will continue to be accessible, and South Main itself will remain open to two-way traffic. Work along the three-lane corridor will be done one lane at a time so it can continue to be used.

Although there are certainly challenges left on the road ahead, the path to construction in 2021 — which started nearly a decade ago in 2012 — has already jumped over several hurdles.

Perhaps the largest was securing the funding, most of which was obtained through a $10.5 million federal BUILD grant, awarded in 2018.

R-II district provides Chromebooks to all students

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Putting funding where it matters most, with educational tools directly into the hands of students, the Maryville R-II school district reached a 1:1 ratio of Google Chromebooks to students in 2020.

The project was started last spring, but the pandemic pushed pause on it until the fall.

“This is the first school year where we’ve truly gone one-toone with our Chromebook distribution,” said Assistant Superintendent Steve Klotz.

Students from kindergarten through fourth grade have Chromebooks, but they’re used in the classroom. Students from fifth through 12th grades have their Chromebooks checked out to them for the year.

“Each student has their own device and they’ve been assigned to them,” he said. “They’re responsible for use and maintenance and care.”

The district has around 1,650 Chromebooks and each one is assigned to a student for a period of time. For example, a second grader receives a Chromebook that they will keep until fifth grade,when they will receive a new device. That student again will receive a new device upon entering ninth grade.

Students return them during the summer for cleaning, updates and maintenance.

He noted that the district purchased some “Zap tents,” to heat clean the devices during the summer. This will allow the school to prepare them for redistribution.

The district also offers a “Risk Management Plan.” For $25 parents can insure their child’s device from any accidental damage like scratches on the screen or missing keys, Klotz said.

“When you’re transporting them to and from school, they’re not the most durable device,” he said.

Unique ‘Finds’ success in first year of business

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Owner Wendy Hawkins didn’t plan on having to deal with a pandemic during her first year of operating Unique Finds, but said the business has done very well.

“Actually out of four stores, this one is doing the best so far,” she said.

Even without a lot of foot traffic, her sales have been enough to keep her open.

Hawkins opened Unique Finds in February of 2020 and is closing in on her first year in business. During that year she has definitely found a niche that works for her and customers. She opened as a second-hand shop full of home décor, antiques and more. But through the year, she began adding brightly colored metal statues, which really helped.

“To be honest, some days the antiques sell and then some days the metal art sells,” Hawkins said. “But the combination seems to be working.”

She said they’ve added

a lot more of the metal art though. From frogs with flowers, to pigs, chickens and cows, Unique Finds has a lot of metal artwork available.

She said they can even sell chickens that stand 2-feet, 5-feet and 6-feet tall. She can’t house all those at the store of course, but they’re available at her storage unit should someone be interested in larger lawn décor.

Every time Hawkins orders, she tries to bring in something new, to give shoppers a variety of options.

“But definitely the chickens and roosters are the

most popular,” she said.

Coupled with her online sales and her store, Hawkins has gone through quite a bit of her original stock.

Of her original seven storage units packed with items from a previous store, Hawkins said she is down to one in Arkansas, where her previous store was located, and two in Maryville.

She said they used to go to auctions all the time, but hasn’t in a couple of years.

“This little shop is doing well,” Hawkins said. “I’m really happy with it. I think it’s cute.”

Even with COVID-19

restrictions, she said community members have been really great about wearing their masks and trying to social distance.

“I have heard from customers that they had to stay home during that time and that they’re just kind of getting out.”

She said the annual Shop Hop in December went really well for the store.

By the end of 2021, Maryville citizens should start to see the beginnings of what the massive new overhaul will look like, and head into 2022 with an eye toward a whole new look for those entering the city.

Hawkins said she’s heard from other local shop owners that this year’s foot traffic has been really down.

“But I can’t complain, even with the COVID restrictions,” she said. “I’m just real happy.”

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. But she will stay longer if people are in the store.

With winter weather slowing foot traffic even more, Hawkins may close on Wednesdays through the end of February.

Campbell said their brewing equipment was being made and likely would ship in the next couple of weeks.

But in the meantime, they have been working with a smaller brewing system to create their favorite recipes for the taps.

“We just kind of continue to nail down the concept, work together as a team to nail down menus and beers,” she said.

The balconies will be structurally engineered and Steve Campbell will build them based on those plans.

She thinks they’ll be built on site.

“The building has come together just kind of as expected,” she said. “It’s the third one for Kent (Yount) and I, so we kind of knew what we were getting into.”

Four Horsemen The LLC is comprised of Campbell, Yount, Brandon and Jen Jensen and each member brings their own perspective, Campbell said.

“It kind of just really has blended together,” she said.

“It’s just been fun.”

Campbell noted that they’re lucky to be working together on this project, because each member brings his or her own skill set.

ARC Physical Therapy+ finds success

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Even when trying to create a thriving business during a pandemic, the same tried and true ingredients add up to success.

“The world’s crazy, but it’s still the same rules of physics, you know what I mean?” said Frank Grispino, clinic director of ARC Physical Therapy+. “You provide a good service, top-quality clinical skills at a reasonable, competitive price, and just make the patient and the employers your No. 1 priority — and you can boil success down to that.

And it works.”

At the beginning of March last year, ARC Physical Therapy+ opened in the shopping center next to Hy-Vee, providing a new outpatient clinic for physical and occupational therapy. The aim was to give affordable care to a population that needed it, and Grispino, with 23 years working at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville as an administrator and director of rehab and sports medi-

Since hiring physical therapist Jill Henry, the clinic has taken off and found even more success with community support, clinic director Frank Grispino said. cine, saw a way to do it.

“We’re the only freestanding outpatient clinic in the area,” Grispino said. “Others are hospital-based or nursing homes, so we’re the only one that’s freestanding. So that allows us to provide services really economically compared to some of the other people who have higher overheads that they have to just bill out so much more than we do.

“So we’re giving a cost effective, high quality service — and boy, people are just responding to it.”

ARC Physical Therapy+ is a regional provider that has more than 20 locations across the Midwest.

And in Maryville, Grispino said the location really started to take off after hiring a new physical therapist, Jill Henry.

“Since she’s been on, we’re just growing and growing,” he said.

Once he had the right personnel, it was a matter of creating the right kind of space.

“When I was with St. Francis, we provided the community with a family-like atmosphere,” Grispino said. “And I feel like we’re able to do the family atmosphere through ARC here now, and that really made me happy.

It’s just been awe-inspiring, really.”

He’s put much of what he’s always wanted to implement during his career into the new business, he said. But what has stuck out to Grispino is the support from the local community that’s made it possible.

“We’ve really got some traction, and I owe it to the commu-

nity, both Maryville and the surrounding communities, and our providers who refer us patients — I just can’t thank them enough,” he said.

Grispino said he couldn’t imagine wanting to find success any-

where else.

“I’m born and raised in Maryville, you know, I don’t want to not be in Maryville,” he said.

“And it’s just heartwarming to know we’ve got so much support in the community.”

Northwest renovates Bearcat Pitch

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Upgrading the soccer pitch at Northwest Missouri State University has been a goal of the athletics administration for quite some time.

That goal became a reality in 2020.

The Bearcats now have a new turf field with an improved drainage system.

Now instead of having to wait days after a rain to be able to get on its field, the women’s soccer team is able to be practicing in January with snow still on the ground around the field, but a pristine surface to prepare on for its next season.

“Last week, watching the soccer team go out there and practice three or four times in the middle of January was pretty cool,” Northwest Director of Athletics Andy Peterson said. “That is what it is about. Those young ladies have signed on to be Division-II college athletes, and the pitch that they played on before was almost embarrassing.

“We would have a quarter inch or half inch of rain, which should be absolutely ideal for a natural grass surface to take in some water and be in pretty good shape the next day, and we have to shut them off the pitch for three, four, five days to a week if we had that amount of water.”

The low point for Peterson came when the team had to move games to St. Joseph.

“One of the really big tipping points for us is, its been a few years ago, but we had to host two of our home games down at Missouri Western, just because our pitch was in such bad shape water-wise and holding water,” Peterson said.

“That was kind of the floor for us.”

The playing surface isn’t the only upgrade on the pitch. If a shot missed the goal previously on one end of the field the ball would go into a retention basin behind the goal at one end of the field and players would have to climb over the fence and go down to get the ball.

At the improved Bearcat Pitch, new fencing has been installed behind each goal with netting which extends up to keep shots in play.

The sidewalk which runs by where fans can sit between the pitch and the Carl & Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse was extended to make the spectator experience more accessible.

“I’m just really happy with what has been put in place for the program,” Northwest soccer coach Marc Gordon said.

The previous scoreboard needed parts replaced to operate, but those parts were no longer in production, so an upgrade was necessary.

Gordon says his players have been excited to see their new facility. The fall season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the team has had a chance to practice on the field already.

“From the beginning, they were extremely excited,” Gordon said. “They are grateful.”

Gordon also is excited about the field’s impact on recruiting.

“Before going out (and recruiting) with the grass field — which was not a problem — we would give full disclosure about some of the challenges that we would have with the moisture,” Gordon said.

The team which has gotten the most use out of the new pitch for games has been the Maryville High School boys soccer team, which played several games there this fall, including the district tournament.

“I use Icon (Country Club Road) a lot and I continually see folks out there, in one or another playing soccer.

It has been a great addition for our campus, for our program and apparently folks in the community are using it a bit as well.”

Gordon hopes those who use the facility take care of it.

“It is really not a controlled setting right now,” Gordon said. “It is not closed in. If it is used for what it is made for, so be it. … As long as we are taking care of it and being good stewards.”

Peterson points out that over time the maintenance costs saved by having a turf field will add to the value of the investment.

“We are short staffed in a lot of areas,” Peterson said.

“Our landscape services is one of those groups that does an absolute ton for this campus — being a state arboretum. To free up about an acre of space where they don’t have to worry about mowing it, watering it, sanding, top dressing, aerating it and all that stuff. In the long run, it could pay off in a big way. Not to mention camps, clinics and other revenuegenerating activities that we can have up there to really drive engagement and drive some revenue generation.”

have all of those extra things if you actually can’t play soccer,” Peterson said. “So the first project was to get a pitch down that would allow us to play. We will keep on pushing the envelope for those next things to come

through so that we can have a facility and a program that meets our expectations and the passions of our department, coaching staff, our student-athletes and everyone in between. Exciting times ahead.”
