Madd Hoss Jackson, a Midwestern-native band, will perform at 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16 at the Nodaway County Fair. Ahead Dance Company will perform on the main stage at 5 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., the Nodaway County Community Band will perform at the intersection of Fourth and Market streets. Midwestern band Madd Hoss Jackson will perform on the main stage at 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. Madd Hoss Jackson describes

itself as family-oriented with good old-fashioned values. The band has performed at a variety of venues, including colleges, nightclubs, wedding anniversary parties and small town bars. Radio test markets across the country have offered numerous praises for Madd Hoss Jackson’s new album, “Better with Time.”

The band is comprised of five musicians, including Matt Bullard on guitar, fiddle and vocals; Chris Ratcliff on guitars and vocals; Gordon Mitchell on guitar, banjo and vocals; Mark Behymer on bass, keyboards and vocals; and Jim Jennings on drums and vocals. The musicians are able to take any song and make it sound like their own. Madd Hoss Jackson describes this as a trademark of the band. With the musicians’ ability to change styles and instrumentation, Madd Hoss Jackson may be just as unique as its name. The band has shared the stage with artists such as Eric Church,

Montgomery Gentry, the Charlie Daniels Band, Gary Allan, Blackberry Smoke and .38 Special. Their Facebook page describes them as, “dedicated to blending of the sounds of Texas, Outlaw, Bakersfield and Red Dirt country music.” To expand their presence, Madd Hoss Jackson has started performing in new areas, including Oklahoma, Indiana and Tennessee. The “Barnyard Mardi Gras” parade will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Entrants will parade in floats, on foot and in vehicles. The parade will start at the college entrance on Fourth Street and head to Buchanan Street. From there, it will turn south and end at Second Street. Miss Whitney’s Elite School of Dance will perform that evening at 6:15 p.m on the main stage. The final event will be Pick-Up Country KNIM’s Country Showdown finals, which will take place on the main stage at 8 p.m. The finalist will win $500.

New carnival vendor for 2021 fair

MARYVILLE, Mo. — A new carnival vendor will be on hand for the 2021 Nodaway County Fair after navigating the difficulties of COVID-19 that hurt the industry even more than most. Dozens of carnival vendors in Missouri went out of business during 2020 as fairs and other events canceled due to the pandemic. One of those was Toby’s Carnival, which handled the Nodaway County Fair. Fun Time Shows, based out of southeast Missouri, will take over this year. Run by Missouri native Clint Payne, the company has been in business since the 1970s and operates across several states in the Midwest. Payne has said that his company had trouble booking dates during the pandemic, but were able to weather the storm with help from government programs like the Paycheck Protection Program, and playing smaller venues than usual that were still holding shows. Those that come out to the fair can expect all the usual fun attractions, like food, games and rides.

The Paratrooper is a ride that Fun Time Shows provides. While none of the rides shown on this page are assured to be at the Nodaway County Fair, they are listed as possible rides provided by the carnival. Interested riders may attend the fair to find out which of them will be available.

Fun Time Shows also plans to provide games during the fair.

Boyles selected as grand marshals By TRINITY COBB The Forum

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Bud and Mary Boyles have been named grand marshals of the 2021 Nodaway County Fair Parade. The Nodaway County Fair Board chose the couple

for their years of service to the community. Bud and Mary Boyles moved to Nodaway County in the 1970s. For more than 40 years, they were involved in business in Maryville. Bud founded Wilkinson Motors in 1971 with Dick Wilkinson. In 1984, the deal-

ership became Boyles Motors. Both Bud and Mary worked at Boyles Motors until their retirement. Doug Meyer purchased the dealership — now Meyer Auto Center — in 2015. The Boyles also owned several farms throughout Nodaway County. See BOYLES, 7

community went beyond their work at Boyles Motors. In the past, the couple loaned their flatbed truck to Northwest Missouri State University for moving bleachers. They also loaned the truck every year for hauling and transporting fair items. “We were part of the community, and we liked to help,” Bud said. The fair board chose the Boyles couple to be honored as

grand marshals because of their loyalty to the Nodaway County community over the years. Mary said she and her husband are very honored to be grand marshals this year. “I hope we’re worthy of it,” Mary said. Participating as the Nodaway County Fair’s grand marshals will provide an opportunity for Bud and Mary to once again interact with the community they cherish so much.

MARYVILLE, Mo. — The annual tradition of crowning a little boy and girl to ride in the Nodaway County Fair Parade as royalty returns to the Nodaway County Fair. The Little Mr. and Little Miss Nodaway County contest is open to children ages 3 to 5. While there wasn’t a contest or fair last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2019 contest saw around 30 contestants. Safety Alley opens at 5 p.m. on July 17 MARYVILLE, Mo. — This year’s Safety Alley will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 17 on Market Street just south of the Nodaway County Administration Center. The event’s focus is to offer information for children about how to be safe in their everyday lives. Kids will hear from experts about a number of important safety topics, from pedes-

trian and vehicle safety and much more. Suzanne VonBehren, with the Nodaway County Health Department, said they plan to have the Maryville Fire Department crew and truck on site. Children will get some practice putting out a fire in a “fire house.” VonBehren said those running the event will also have coloring books for the kids.

Motorcycle show set for Saturday at the fair By SKYE POURNAZARI The Forum

MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Nodaway County Fair Motorcycle Show is scheduled for 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 17 in front of the Nodaway County Administration Center, and if this year is anything like the 2019 show, there will be a plethora of different bikes to peruse. In 2018, more than 50 motorcycles were displayed and in 2019 nearly that same amount graced Market Street with their colorful paint jobs and beautifully shaped frames. With motorcycles of all kinds, from antiques to modern, classic styles to custom-built specialty works of art, the show has had something to offer everyone. Even the most novice motorcycle enthusiast can find something at the show to pique their interest. During both the most recent contests, a 1957 Triumph owned by Everett Sticken, of Pickering, took the Best in Show award. Perhaps this is the year it will be bested. For more information or a registration form, visit the Nodaway County Fair website at www.nodcofair. org.

Church to host lunch for carnival employees

By SKYE POURNAZARI The Forum

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Members of the First Christian Church plan to provide their annual meal for carnival workers setting up the rides in downtown Maryville during the Nodaway County Fair. Sue Schenkel, a member of the outreach committee, told The Forum that even though the carnival provider has changed, the church finds it imperative within their mission to invite the workers to the community and help them feel welcome. She explained that after calling the previous carnival’s owner Daniel Yarnell, she found Toby’s Carnival Company, Inc. had closed its gates and was no longer operating. She said he was up in Michigan with his new business cutting down trees. Schenkel said she believed Yarnell’s carnival and others had closed their businesses due difficulties with the COVID-19 pandemic. After that, she began a search to locate the carnival that plans to setup this year. “It took me a while to find them,” Schenkel said. After several phone calls she was put in touch with Clint Payne, owner and operator of Fun Time Shows Amusement Carnival. According to the carnival’s website, Payne is a third-generation amusement carnival based out of southeast Missouri. His grandparents Harold and Lorene Payne have been in the business since the 1970s. In 1998, they sold the show to Payne’s parents, Kenny and Janet Payne, who operated it until Clint Payne purchased the business in 2008. For four years leading up to this one, the church held a late night breakfast for workers who began set up late at night and worked

Schenkel said Payne has a different method of setting up. They plan to set up Wednesday morning, so Schenkel was told a lunch would probably work better than a breakfast for his crew. “So instead of a night meal, we’ll be fixing lunch at 1 o’clock on Wednesday for them,” she said. The lunch menu includes baked ham, barbecue beans, cheesy potatoes, hot rolls and a variety of salads and desserts. She was told to expect between 25 and 30 people and possibly a couple children for the meal. This is very similar to the number previously fed during the event by church members. Schenkel said church members kind of liked providing the meal late at night, but were happy to do something different. “We’ll do whatever works for them,” she said. “This will be easier, I know that.”

Crew members of the Toby’s Carnival Company, Inc. have breakfast at the First Christian Church at the 2018 Nodaway County Fair. The church congregation has held the breakfast for three years and this year, will provide lunch to crews with Fun Time Shows carnival.
